President Donald Trump signed directives to build a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico and crack down on U.S. cities that shield illegal immigrants, proceeding quickly on sweeping and divisive plans to curb immigration and boost national security. Wall Street advanced on Wednesday to push the Dow Jones Industrial Average across the 20,000 mark for the first time ever as solid earnings and optimism over President Donald Trump’s pro-growth initiatives reawakened a post-election rally. He has made several business-friendly decisions since taking office, including signing executive orders to reduce regulatory burden on domestic manufacturers and clear-
ing the way for the construction of two oil pipelines. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite indexes also hit record intraday highs. The Dow came within a point of the historic mark on Jan. 6, as investors banked on pro-growth policies and tax cuts many expect from the new administration. However, the index had struggled in recent weeks as investors awaited clarity on the new administration’s policies grew cautious. REUTERS

Just six days into his first term, President Donald Trump visits heavily Democratic Philadelphia on Thursday, an appearance welcomed by his fellow Republicans — and scores of protesters eager to express their outrage. Trump is scheduled to address the 2017 Congressional Republican retreat Thursday at a Center City hotel. “Philadelphia’s a great city! It’s a good choice,” said state Rep. Martina White, a Republican who represents Northeast Philly and part of Bucks County. She’s on the same page as Trump when it comes to sanctuary city policies, having previously introduced anti-sanctuary city legislation in Harrisburg, which has not yet become law. “It’s a good thing that President Trump has made public safety a priority. ... Americans are bearing the brunt of these policies,” she said, citing two cases of illegal immigrants being arrested in the region for sexual crimes against children, one of whom was released after posting bail before being re-arrested by the feds. White doesn’t plan to attend the retreat, as she has a full day of events planned in her district and around Philadelphia. But she said she hopes protesters don’t interrupt the retreat. The annual Joint Republican retreat, running through Friday, is intended for federal Republican officials to set a legislative agenda for 2017. In addition to Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and British Prime Minister Theresa May will speak at the retreat.
On Wednesday, a small group of protesters were already carrying signs outside the Loews hotel at 13th and Market streets. “He’s just another overrated president!” declared Havard Castiglioni, 19, of Wynnewood. “He wants to make America great again, but he starts by making it worse?” Protester Melissa Amilani, 25, of South Philly, listed the Affordable Care Act, typically referred to as Obamacare, the Environmental Protection Agency, funding for Planned Parenthood and “women’s

reproductive rights” as things that “require immediate attention.” But she added that said she hasn’t felt safe since Trump’s election. A neighbor has a Trump-Pence sign in their window, she said, and a gay man was attacked in the area after the election. Also in attendance was pro-Trump protester Jerry Lambert, 71, of Bucks County, carrying a sign that read, “I love walls.” “I think President Trump can turn the economy around and rehabilitate the economy,” Lambert said. “Give him some time. We have to wait six months to see what happens.”

Protest: A sign of the times Delia King has been protesting since Ronald Reagan. She rattles off the names of marches she’s participated over the better part of three decades — for women’s choice, for Black Lives Matter, against the Bushes and others — while meticulously painting the names, phone numbers and addresses of Pennsylvania senators on a black poster. In a community center in West Philly, King and about a dozen others are poring over protest signs, gearing up for President Donald Trump’s arrival in Philadelphia on Thursday. Some signs are crude and to the point: “F— Trump.” “F— you racist, sexist, capitalist, imperialist a—holes.” “F— Paul Ryan.” Others are motivational, informative or innocent — like the cat that King’s 5-year-old son painted with the message “Dump Trump in the litter box.” The center provided art supplies and a place for citizens to make signs to use themselves or donate to others in the resistance. “A lot of times people want to get involved, and making signs is kind of like a low-key, easy thing to do,” said Ron, a West Philly resident who helped organize the event Tuesday. Ron asked that his surname not be published because he feared a possible retaliation against the center. “It’s like, a low-risk sort of thing, people can bring their kids so it’s like people can still feel like they’re doing something,” he said.
“Without the signs it’s almost like the protest is sort of invisible. So to have artwork and good messages, it definitely helps.” Throughout history, the arts have been integral to protest. From songs for social change through the 1960s, to pieces of fine art, like Pablo Picasso’s “Guernica,” activists have used the arts to express their messages. It’s no different in 2017. Signs are still an integral and enduring part of political protest, most recently seen in the Women’s March on Washington. King, a professional artist who created several murals throughout the city, said marches make a point with their sheer numbers, but signs are a way to bring your personal issue to the mix and let your creativity loose. “Art is the soul and the blood that keeps the movement going,” Joe Makoviecki, a musician who teaches the history of protest music, said. “It’s the thing that keeps reinspiring the movement when it gets to its lowest points, or supercharges it when there’s another wave, like we’re experiencing right now. “If you think about activism and protest and social justice as a process that functions as a human body … information and facts constitute the mind of the movement; activism and resistance is the physical body itself. Art is like the soul and the blood of the movement.” To Ron, that’s just a sign of the times. ALEXIS SACHDEV

Sanctuary cities stand strong in face of funding cuts President Donald Trump threatens to cut off federal money from cities that harbor undocumented immigrants. ERIN TIERNAN @ErinTiernan
erin.tiernan@metro.us
Leaders of sanctuary cities across America aren’t backing down after President Donald Trump vowed to cut funding to communities that offer safe harbor to undocumented immigrants. In an executive order signed Wednesday the president directed the government to identify federal dollars it can withhold from so-called “sanctuary cities,” the term used for 300 or so cities and counties that shelter undocumented immigrants from deportation. While there is no legal definition for the term, these cities typically tell police not to inquire about immigration status, or they decline requests from immigration officials to keep non-violent defendants in custody while they await deportation. Proponents of the policies say they protect the economy and keep families together. For now, the threats are just a lot of hot air, some officials say. Exactly

which funds the Trump administration plans to cut are still undetermined, but the president has said he would target any community with policies in place that protect illegal immigrants. In Philadelphia, where billions are on the line, Mayor Jim Kenney said he would stand by the city’s sanctuary policies. “Today’s executive order is simply a directive, as the Trump administration hasn’t even identified yet what federal grant funding they think they could cut. Nothing about the city’s policy is changing as of today,” he said. Joe DeFelice, chairman of Philadelphia’s Republican Party, fired back, calling sanctuary city policies “insane and illegal.” “With President Trump’s welcome announcement that his ad-
ministration will prioritize fighting this insane and illegal policy — specifically by withholding federal funds — Mayor Kenney endangers the fiscal health of the city,” he said. Cities from Boston to San Francisco stand to lose billions if Trump follows through on his threats. Federal dollars pay for highways, subsidize school programs like free and reduced lunch and help take care of veterans and the elderly. It’s also money that goes toward antiterrorism programs. to woman’s letters by addressing her husband “It’s just a little demoralizing to go through all the effort of thoughtfully composing these letters,” Jenine Barber said. ALEXIS SACHDEV @lexsachdev

Janine Barber has sent letters to her senator, Pat Toomey, at least 10 times since Election Day, and tried many more times to reach him by phone. So when Toomey (R-Pa.) finally responded last week, Barber said she was surprised. That’s because Toomey’s office addressed three of the four letters to her husband, Dan. “Clearly I typed Janine, not Dan,” Barber said of the messages she
sent Toomey through an online submission form available on the senator’s website. “So to get these responses to my husband, I was really astounded.” Barber wrote her first letters after Election Day — handwritten, at least two pages in length — to both Toomey and Sen. Bob Casey, a Democrat. She said on that letter, she might have included her husband’s name because, as he was a former registered Republican, Barber thought that would carry weight with the Republican senator. But the other letters submitted online contained only Barber’s name and email address, as well as the family’s address in Willow Grove. Toomey’s web submission form also requires constituents to select from one of 34 topics, from “academy nomina-
tions” to “veterans.” Barber said for some letters, like one regarding Rex Tillerson’s nomination as Secretary of State, she would copy and paste the same letter under different topics, like environment, foreign policy and others. In response, Barber received four hard-copy letters from Toomey in the last two weeks. Three, dated Jan. 3, Dec. 19 and Dec. 2, were addressed to “Mr. Dan Barber.” “I said, ‘Dan, he sent them to you, but I wrote to them!” Barber said, recalling a discussion she had with her husband after they opened the letters printed on the senator’s official letterhead. “What I think happened ... is that somehow my address pulled up my husband’s name in their database, because he was a registered Republican,”

the effort of thoughtfully composing these letters,” Barber said. “To go to all this and to send something, and then to have it sort of diminished by responding to my husband, who had nothing to do with it, isn’t really very nice.” Sen. Toomey has been targeted by protesters since Election Day in weekly meetings across the state called Tuesdays with Toomey. The senator’s perceived silence on the issues protesters raise — from education to Senate confirmation hearings — has only prompted more protest. “I just feel like Toomey doesn’t share that respect [for other viewpoints] to his constituents,” Barber said. “Especially as evidenced by replying to the husband, not the wife. … I think it’s disrespectful.” Sen. Toomey’s office reached out to Barber to apologize, and later released a statement to Metro: “This was an unfortunate clerical error. Sen. Toomey’s office has apologized directly to Ms. Barber for this mistake.”

Veronica’s mom gets glam in ‘Riverdale’ Marisol Nichols plays Hermione Lodge in the CW’s “Archie” retelling.
What’s it like having a “will they/won’t they” with Luke Perry? [Laughs] It’s been fun! I’m not gonna lie — I’m a girl, for God’s sake! I remember “90210” very well. It’s fun being thrust into those things. I posted a picture on my Instagram because Skeet Ulrich joins us for a while as well, so I’m like, “OK, well I’m a ’90s happy girl.” Going to work isn’t hard on those days, I’ll tell you that much.
KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn
kate.mooney@metro.us
Marisol Nichols is new to the world of teen drama. Despite a brief turn on “Teen Wolf,” the actress is better known for her roles on crime shows, like Special Agent Zoe Keats on “NCIS,” or counterterrorism chief Nadia Yassar in “24.” But now the 43-yearold actress stars in “Riverdale,” the CW show everyone’s buzzing about. In the steamy noir spin on the classic “Archie” comic — the vibe is “Twin Peaks” meets “Gossip Girl” — Nichols plays Hermione Lodge, mother to the infamous Veronica. In this retelling, the two have fled New York’s high society for Hermione’s hometown of Riverdale, after husband and father Hiram Lodge goes to prison for embezzlement. The series opens with Hermione and Veronica both adjusting to smalltown life. Veronica sheds her mean-girl past, while Hermione finds new struggles as a broke single mom and contends with the highschool drama she left behind. That includes an old nemesis in Betty’s mother (Madchen Amick, who incidentally will play Shelly Johnson in “Twin Peaks” reboot), and an ex-boyfriend in Archie’s father (Luke Perry).
Marisol Nichols, (left) plays Hermione Lodge, mother of Veronica, (Camila Mendez) right, in “Riverdale.”
Ahead of tonight’s premiere, Nichols calls from L.A. to talk about playing a glammed-up version of Hermione and feeling like a ’90s teen opposite Luke Perry. Hermione was allegedly a mean girl when she went to Riverdale High, but from what we’ve watched so far, as an adult she seems like a good person? We’re not sure. I’m glad that you can’t really tell! You’re going to see a lot more Hermione and what she’s going through, with her and Luke Perry. She is trying to do the best that she can. She’s trying to be a better
person than she was in high school. Same with Veronica: They’re both going through that same change. Of course, any villain would say they were doing the best they could. So you would say she’s a villain? She’s not a villain, but she’s not without her own flaws, without giving too much away. She makes mistakes and doesn’t always do the right thing. This is a different role than you’re used to playing. Yes. I’m used to “24” and “NCSIS,” crime dramas. That was my specialty for
KATIE YU/THE CW
a long time. And so I’m really happy that I can step out of that. I love those shows, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes it’s more about the plot than the characters, and so this is really fun, to be able to create something so bold and three-dimensional, with a lot at stake. “Riverdale” also has that mystery/ thriller element. Exactly. It still has a mystery at the heart of it, but it’s not, “OK, well the evidence shows…” or “Let’s get this over to forensics.” [Laughs]
How does having a daughter in real life inform the role for you? Eight years ago — my daughter’s only 8 years old — I was still a working actress but I had a hard time playing a mom because I didn’t really get it. I could go, “Oh, well that’s how I feel about my dog, or my cat,” but having a kid changed me so much. I was like, “I get it, I know exactly what I’d do.” So being the mom to Veronica, I sort of just invented that backstory of how they grew up together and how she raised her. It’s really funny because when I’m memorizing my lines, [my daughter] will read Veronica’s lines for me. [Laughs] And she’ll change the lines to add in “mommy.” When I go to set I’m still hearing that little kid’s voice when she’s talking. It adds a different element to it, for sure. GETTY IMAGES

The play staged Archie coming out as gay, and Aguirre-Sacasa faced litigation if the performance carried on. He changed the title and renamed the characters, but that
wasn’t the end of his fight against the pushback. Well-known for his work on television work with “Glee and “Looking, Aguirre-Sacasa has been rallying for LGBT narratives in television, theater and comics throughout his entire career. Why break down Archie’s universe and rebuild it into something different from its 1941 debut? Are we expected to dissect every iconic character, color outside their
lines and make a mess of things? No, and that’s what makes “Riverdale special. No one expects a mess, and a mess is a faithful representation of America. America is painted as far less neat than it was in the comic book golden age in the 1940s. There’s divergent beauty in chaos, and “Riverdale is evidence of that. “Riverdale debuts on The CW Jan. 26 at 9 p.m. EST. KYLE HILLER

Edgar Ramirez doesn’t want you The actor says that his new movie “Gold” finds loyalty in a corrupt world. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Edgar Ramirez isn’t surprised Trump won. “I come from Venezuela,” the actor (“Carlos,” “Joy”) tells us. “For us, it wasn’t hard to see coming.” On paper, “Gold,” his latest film, doesn’t sound like a distraction from our problems. It tells the story of Kenny Wells (Matthew McConaughey), a floundering businessman who strikes big on Wall Street when he claims to have found gold buried deep in the Indonesian jungle. Ramirez plays Michael Acosta, the geologist tasked with helping him locate and mine it. Things don’t go according to plan. And
yet Ramirez argues that the film — semi-loosely based on the 1993 Bre-X mining scandal — offers hope, on top of a stark look at greed. It’s easy to watch this film and feel like it’s another grim reminder of what’s going on in the world today, when greediness is encouraged, when our president may only be out for himself. But the relationship between Kenny and Mike winds up being one of true friendship. What I find so interesting and moving and beautiful is that, yes, the story exists in a world driven by greed, yet you have these two characters who are not in it for the money and the wealth and the power. They’re in it for the gold. The gold, for them, means self-respect and self-worth. It’s a world where everybody is try-

ing to take everybody else down, yet you have two characters who manage to be loyal to each other and keep their word. In a time when words mean nothing, or some people are trying to devaluate the worth of words, these guys keep their word.
They’re not always doing the right thing, though, which makes them more interesting. They’re not perfect; they’re flawed. They’re not indifferent or exempt from the antivalues of the world they live in. But they’re loyal. Their agreement is based

to give up hope That explains how certain opportunists operate. They love the thrill of the deal. They don’t always think about the art of it. A friend recently published a book [Jonathan Jakubowicz’s “The Adventure of Juan Planchard”], and there’s a line there that is great. He says “Having money and happiness feel very close, but it requires maturity and intelligence to tell the difference.” Being rich and happy are very close, but they require a very high IQ and a lot of maturity to tell the difference. We’ve been trained to believe unimaginable wealth will
make us happy. I don’t think I’d ever want too much money. Having a lot of money is a lot of work. I agree with you, I just want to be comfortable. I don’t want money to be an issue.

A message to (fellow) journalists Ramirez is not just an actor; he’s a journalist, too. He knows what it’s like to have to cover demagogues and dictators. And he understands why American journalists are nervous over the next four to eight years. “You’ve got to be very careful not to buy into the craziness. Because it’s contagious,” he says. “We’re human beings in the end; we’re permeable. You’ve got to be very careful not to respond in the same manner. It’s very important to stay grounded. Because it’s very easy to buy into the chaos. You get tired of listening to the things that aren’t right, that are contradictory. You feel you’re being lied to your face, that your reason is being challenged in a very cheap way. However, it’s important not to buy into the brutality of it all.”

Get revved up for the Philadelphia Auto Show A local tradition rides on. A.D. AMOROSI @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
Whether you drive or not, the allure of the Philadelphia Auto Show is undeniable. The cars are always sleek and beautiful with design elements reminiscent of fine sculpture. The show, which returns to the Pennsylvania Convention Center this weekend, is one of the largest in the country, drawing about 250,000 people. With 2018 model cars, classic cars, famous cars from films and television and the technologies that drive them, it’s no wonder the event is so popular. And for being in its 116th year, it doesn’t look a day over 114. Kevin Mazzucola, executive director of the Auto Dealers Association of Greater Philadelphia,

the owners and producers of the Philadelphia Auto Show, chats with us about what to expect this year and that brand-newcar smell. What balance do you guys like to strike in celebrating the Philly Auto Show’s vivid past as well as its spicy present and future? Spicy is a good word. First off, 116 years is a long time, enough so that we’re part of this city’s fabric. We see that generationally when we get grandfathers, sons and grandsons digging the classic car display and saying things like, “I drove one of those at age 16,” when they point out, say, our 1968 Ford Shelby GT 500. You can see the history of design and how the industry moved. On the flip side of that, though, you’re showing off preproduction models and technologies
PROVIDED
WHERE TO EAT, DRINK & PLAY that are just coming into their own. The Kia Stinger, the Lexus LC 500, the Chevy Equinox, a GMC Terrain — everyone is going to love seeing these. But, yeah, it’s the technology that is being celebrated — a transformation in the industry as important as the conveyor belt. You’re going to see and hear discussion about semiautonomous vehicles, those functions
usually performed by a driver, like lane avoidance, which warns of vehicles in the blind spot, or even self-parking. It’s like a smartphone, then. Exactly. The future of the industry is an interface with drivers similar to the smartphone with new consumers looking for collaborators in their car, whether it is navigation or
hand-free texting. And the cool thing is the democratization of the technology. It used to be that only high-end, pricey vehicles had this technology. Not now. All vehicles, low-end and high-end, will soon have the semiautonomous functions. The idea of a Hollywoodcars display is pretty cool. Why do this now since you haven’t dis-
played these cars before? We need to raise to our game. Outside of the films and the internet, people don’t get a chance to see cars like our 1966 Batmobile, “Back to the Future’s” DeLorean, the original “Ghostbusters” 1991 Cadillac Hearse Ecto-1 or “Dumb and Dumber’s” 1989 Ford Econoline Van “Sheep Dog” promotional vehicle — the Mutt Cutts Mobile.

Seven-minute egg at Red Owl Tavern
Jennifer Logue eats her way through Philly.
PROVIDED
jennifer.logue@metro.us
Locals don’t typically explore dining options around the touristy Independence Hall area. But with the new dinner menu at Red Owl Tavern, you might want to make an exception. What immediately caught my eye was the seven-minute egg. While I was initially hesitant to eat an egg at dinnertime, I’m so glad I cast my reservations aside for this dish. It comes beautifully
presented in a cast iron skillet — the egg covered in a thick outer layer of bread crumbs sitting on top of a bed of sauteed shaved brussels sprouts with garlic, shallot, chili flake and soy-ginger ponzu. Sesame seeds are sprinkled on top for added crunch and flare. If you love contrasting textures, biting into the crusty egg ball is quite the experience — the gooeyness of the egg pairs well with the crispi-
ness of the herbed bread crumbs. Flavorwise, it is not spicy, but simply flavorful and robust. The shaved brussels sprouts underneath bring a little heat, however, with the addition of chili flakes. The gingersoy ponzu is heavier on the soy than citrus, adding a salty zest that really launches this breaded egg ball into the stratosphere. Red Owl Tavern is located at 433 Chestnut St.

You don’t need a passport to enjoy these U.S. islands where you can leave winter behind.
Hilton Head Island South Carolina claims its fair share of outdoor activities (most notably golf), but this island has more going for it than most when it comes to cultural opportunities and upscale restaurants. After a day of beach-biking, tennis or kayaking, catch a performance by the Hilton Head Choral Society, the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, dance or theater at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina. Insider Tip: For great views of the island, visit the red-striped Harbour Town Lighthouse, in the south-side enclave of Sea Pines. Photographs and relics line the walls, stitching together the history of the area as you climb the tower’s 114 steps.

Nonetheless, the island has managed to preserve a good chunk of its Southern charm and 19th-century history, with Fernandina’s 50 blocks of late-Victorian architecture deemed a historic district by the National Register of Historic Places. Wander the streets at your leisure, join a guided tour or take a horse-and-buggy ride, then grab a picnic lunch and head to the beach.

You won’t find much in the way of shopping, nightlife or entertainment, but if you enjoy quiet and wildlife, the island is a great choice. The Dauphin Island Bird Sanctuaries are considered one of the best spots in this corner of the country for bird-watching. Renting a cottage or condo is relatively inexpensive, and it gives you flexibility to cook your own meals.
St. John On St. John, the smallest and least populated of the three U.S. Virgin Islands, it’s all about the beach. Trunk Bay Beach, bequeathed to the National Park Service by the Rockefeller family in 1956 (Virgin Islands National Park covers nearly two-thirds of the island), is regularly cited as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, favored for its powdery sand and 225-yard-long, self-guided coral-reef “trail.” For visitors on a budget, there are 126 tents and cottages for

There are plenty of funky boutiques and purveyors of upscale goods (modprint pioneer Lily Pulitzer got her start here). Insider Tip: Driving in Key West is a futile endeavor. These 5 Flyers will be NHL All-Stars in the not-so-distant future The future is bright in South Philly, especially with these five young players. ERIC GOLDSTEIN @EricEsponda sports@metro.us
Wayne Simmonds is headed to Los Angeles this weekend to participate in his first NHL All-Star Game. As the team leader in goals with 19, including nine on the power play, the nine-year veteran will serve as the Flyers’ lone representative. He will join the rest of his teammates, which include Sydney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin, on the Metropolitan team in the new 3-on-3 tournament that was instituted last year
that consists of four All-Star teams based on the NHL’s four divisions. The hard-nosed winger, also known for his physicality and willingness to drop the gloves, is the third straight different player to represent the organization at the mid-season event. Captain Claude Giroux was named last year while Jake Voracek and Giroux got nods in 2015. While Simmonds, Giroux and Voracek were the Flyers’ top candidates to make the All-Star Game this season, let’s take a look at who else on their roster has the potential to become one in the future (listed in order of likelihood).
Ivan Provorov This is the one obvious choice. The 19-year-old defenseman has played well beyond his years as a rookie this season and already is the team’s No. 1 blue liner. As he gains more experience and develops an offensive game, his stock is only going to rise — as well as the number of All-Star selections.
Shayne Gostisbehere Despite enduring a bit of a sophomore slump, Gostisbehere showed his true ceiling last year when he was a finalist for Rookie of the Year. He still needs to clean up on the defensive end, where’s he’s shown improvement this year, but this is a show-

Still only 25 years old, Schenn is on pace to top last year’s numbers, which were career highs in goals and assists. The Flyers think there is another gear to reach even higher. Set to hit the prime years of his career, Schenn has the tools to elevate his game even more.
Give him a few more years when he is moved to center to watch his true ability bubble to the surface. In due time, the playmaking 19-year-old forward, who has exhibited jaw-dropping moves and passes, should be an

The 24-year-old has shown flashes of breaking out with one, but injuries or a lack of commitment on offense have stalled his progress. He definitely has All-Star potential if he can put both ends together.

Are you living with moderate to severe psoriasis?
Mike Groh was announced as the Eagles’ new wide receivers coach Monday. Groh, who spent 2016 as the Rams’ wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator, replaces the outgoing Greg Lewis. Unless substantial reinforcements arrive this offseason, Groh may well be taking over the most difficult job on the Philadelphia staff. Coaxing improvement out of the Eagles receivers proved too tall an order for Lewis’ first year as a receivers coach in the NFL. In 2016, Jordan Matthews was the Eagles’ only receiver to top 400 yards receiving. Matthews finished his third season with 804 yards and three touchdowns. On the entire team, only undrafted rookie Paul Turner, who had eight receptions, averaged more than 11 yards per catch. The Rams, despite all of their troubles this season, saw the opposite results from their wide receivers under Groh. Kenny Britt, a free agent this offseason oft mentioned as one of the Eagles’ targets, had the first 1,000-yard season in his eight year career in 2016. Brian Quick set a career high in yardage and receptions and Tavon
The Eagles got a bright up-and-coming position coach in Mike Groh.
Austin did the same. Groh spent just one season in Los Angeles, before that he was in Chicago for three years where he coached Alshon Jeffery. Jeffery improved from 367 yards and three scores as a rookie to 89 receptions for 1,421 yards during Groh’s first in Chicago, exploding onto the national scene. He and Brandon Marshall both made the Pro Bowl. His track record with receivers isn’t limited to the pros. Before Chicago he was wide receivers coach for Alabama, where he oversaw Amari Cooper’s freshman season with the Tide. Cooper had exactly 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns as a true freshman. Two years later

he was the fourth pick in the NFL draft. Football fans have all been privy to what the Raiders wideout has done since. While there are other positions of need as well, few would criticize the Eagles for selecting a wide receiver with the 14th or 15th pick in the first round. Clemson’s Mike Williams, fresh off a tremendous national championship game, and Western Michigan’s Corey Davis lead the draft prospects at the position, and Washington’s John Ross has speed to make fans remember DeSean Jackson’s heyday. And then there’s always the chance Jackson could return to the midnight green as a free agent. LUKE MILLER

Aries Handle important partnerships with care. Listen to complaints and suggestions, and look for a way to compromise. It’s best to keep the peace to avoid backlash.
Libra It will be difficult to choose between an emotional and an intelligent response. Don’t let anyone goad you into an argument you aren’t prepared for.
Taurus Share your thoughts and collaborate with people heading in a similar direction. A chance to communicate with people who have something to offer will be enlightening.
Scorpio Plan to have some fun or find a creative outlet that will give you the platform you need to display your talents, skills and foresight.
Gemini Learn from watching what others do, not by opposing those who will never do or see things your way. If you want change, it’s up to you to make it happen.
Sagittarius Added responsibilities can work for or against you. Dig in and get the work out of the way fast in order to garner praise and avoid criticism.
Cancer Partners and children will be demanding. Before you think about giving in, set down some ground rules. Offer love, consideration and understanding.
Capricorn You’ll discover a unique way to use your knowledge, expertise and skills to bring in extra cash. Don’t reveal your plans until you have every detail in place.
Leo Changes at home will come as a surprise if you haven’t been paying attention. Don’t neglect the little things. Pay close attention to detail, especially with personal relationship.
Aquarius Disciplined actions will be rewarded. Put your energy into setting goals and reaching your destination. A personal change will do you good.
Virgo Don’t sign any contracts until you negotiate the deal you want. Your ability to persuade others to see and do things your way must not be wasted.
Pisces A romantic gesture will be met with an interesting response. Don’t feel pressured to spend too much. You can have fun doing something simple. EUGENIA LAST
