TRUMP: PENCE WILL LEAD GOOGLE MUST TURN OVER FOREIGN EMAILS VOTER FRAUD PANEL

1

President Donald Trump said in remarks broadcast on Sunday that he would put Vice President Mike Pence in charge of a commission to probe what he believes was voter fraud in last November’s election. There is an overwhelming consensus among state officials, election experts and politicians that voter fraud is rare in the United States, but Trump has repeatedly said he

thinks perhaps millions of votes cast in the Nov. 8 election were fraudulent. “I’m going to set up a commission to be headed by Vice President Pence and we’re going to look at it very, very carefully,” Trump told Fox News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly in an interview taped on Friday. REUTERS

A U.S. judge has ordered Google to comply with search warrants seeking customer emails stored outside the United States, diverging from a federal appeals court that reached the opposite conclusion in a similar case involving Microsoft Corp. U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Rueter in Philadelphia ruled on Friday that transferring emails from a foreign server so FBI agents could review them

locally as part of a domestic fraud probe did not qualify as a seizure. The judge said this was because there was “no meaningful interference” with the account holder’s “possessory interest” in the data sought. “Though the retrieval of the electronic data by Google from its multiple data centers abroad has the potential for an invasion of privacy, the actual infringement of privacy occurs at the time of disclosure. TRUMP STEPS UP ATTACK ON JUDGE

3

President Donald Trump ramped up his criticism of a federal judge who blocked a travel ban on seven mainly Muslim nations and said courts were making U.S. border security harder, intensifying the first major legal battle of his presidency. In a series of tweets that broadened his attack on the country’s judiciary, Trump said Americans should blame U.S. District Judge James Robart and the court sys-

tem if anything happened. Trump did not elaborate on what threats the country potentially faced. He added that he had told the Department of Homeland Security to “check people coming into our country VERY CAREFULLY. The courts are making the job very difficult!” in a tweet. REUTERS

MAY’S BREXIT PLAN UNDER PRESSURE

4

Pro-Europe MPs’ efforts to temper Theresa May’s Brexit plan gained traction on Sunday when a member of her own party broke ranks to criticize her strategy before parliamentary votes that will test her government’s slim majority. A three-day debate on a law giving May the right to trigger Britain’s exit from the European Union begins on Monday,

and will be followed by a series of votes on whether to attach extra conditions to her plan to start talks by March 31. MPs voted overwhelmingly in favor of the principle of the new law last week, signaling May is unlikely to be blocked outright from triggering Brexit. But, she will need the support of her whole party to approve the strategy without change. REUTERS

New mosque rises in North Philly As Islam faces hostilities from the White House, the religion is growing in Philly. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse

sam.newhouse@metro.us

Turn onto North Broad Street around the corner from Joe Frazier’s old gym, and emerging on the skyline is a new architectural feature: the dome of a mosque. “This will be the first mosque built in Philadelphia from the ground up,” said Mujeeb Chaudhary, president of the Philadelphia Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. “There are 47 mosques in Philadelphia, but nothing like this, a mosque rising from the ground up, pointed to qibla [the direction of Mecca], with windows like that.” An estimated 200,000 Muslims live in Philadelphia. Some of them identify as part of the Ahmadiyya sect of Islam, founded in India in 1889 and now represented in 207 countries, with 76 chapters in the U.S., four of those in Pennsylvania. The roughly 460 members of the Philadelphia chapter of the Ahmadiyya society have

been gathering to worship since 1982 at a mosque on the property of a renovated old house further north by Broad Street and Erie Avenue. Before that, the community, which started in Philly in the 1940s, met wherever they could find enough room to worship. “We were always renting a place,” said imam Bilal Abdus Salaam, who converted and joined the sect in 1960. “We weren’t even looked on as Muslims back them. For hav-

ing beards and wearing dashikis, they called us beatniks.” Construction started on their new, permanent home in July 2013. Leaders hope the 28,000 square-foot mosque with a planned 60-foot minaret will be finished this summer. The mosque will include facilities ranging from a massive worship area and a large kitchen facility to conference rooms and some living quarters. The leaders want to

invite the entire community to see it, regardless of faith. “It’s going to lift up the neighborhood,” Bilal predicted. “This has always been a prayer of mine. ... This is God’s plan, that we build this mosque in Philadelphia, and change the lives of some of these Muslims in Philadelphia.” The growth of the Philadelphia Ahmadiyya community comes as Islam is facing increasing hostility from President Donald Trump. But lead-

ers of the community rejected the activities of the terrorists Trump says he is targeting. “We don’t believe in bloody jihad for no reason,” Chaudhary said. “It’s against the commandments. I don’t know how these are people getting their instructions from the Holy Koran.” Instead, the goals of the Ahmaddiya community will be toward improving the lives of the community around the mosque, the leaders said.

Students learn politics at Muslim school in Massachusetts The students at Al-Noor Academy, a Muslim school outside Boston, bombarded their government class speaker with questions: How do you start a political discussion? How do you use social media in politics? And how do you influence elected leaders? The group of mostly 16-year-olds was too young to vote but seemed eager to find ways to counter the rhetoric of President Donald Trump who last week issued travel restrictions to the United States by citizens of seven Muslimmajority countries. “Before this election happened, I really didn’t know much about politics at all,” said Sarah Sendian, a sophomore student at the school

in Mansfield. “With the new president and all of the things that are happening, it sparked a lot of interest in a lot of young people.” The class is one of the first actions of newly

formed Muslim political organization Jetpac - standing for Justice, Education, Technology, Policy Advocacy Center - to encourage political activism among the 3.3 million Muslims who

make up about 1 percent of the U.S. population. “This is the time when Muslims should step forward,” said Nadeem Mazen, the group’s founder and a city councilor in Cam-

bridge, Massachusetts. “What’s going on at the national level only emphasizes what we’ve known prior to Trump being elected, and it’s that we need really good leaders.” Thursday’s lesson at the 116-student junior and senior high school was heavy on how to build networks of like-minded people and turn them out at public meetings, rallies and elections to amplify the voices of U.S. Muslims. About 824,000 of them were registered to vote as of 2016, a figure that had risen by about 60 percent over the past four years, according to national Muslim advocacy group the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

The class teacher, Joe Florencio, reminded his students that generations of immigrant populations have gone through the same process of becoming politically active. “To be effective politically, you have to know what you’re doing,” said Florencio, the sole non-Muslim faculty member in a building that once housed the Roman Catholic church where his parents were married. Students at the school, founded in 2000, study both standard academic subjects including science and math as well as Arabic and the Koran, a model similar to the many parochial schools in the Northeast. Two weeks in, it’s already time for a slogan retread. “Make America Great Again” is quickly giving way to “Please Shut Up Now!” — without the please. New petition signatures aren’t being counted on the White House website. The “We The People” page, where Americans can “speak directly to the government,” hasn’t been working since President Donald Trump moved in. And no one’s answering the White House comment line. The rising zip-it call is being sounded from Trump Tower and the White House switchboard, all the way to Berkeley, Seattle and even Mar-a-Lago, pretty much anywhere the new president or his posse face criticism of any kind. Why be bothered with a bunch of whining critics? They’ll never have anything nice to say, anyway. In his short time in office, Trump has rarely

missed a chance to demand that someone else put a cork in it. After the Women’s March, he tweeted: “Was under the impression that we just had an election! Why didn’t these people vote?” When campus protesters romped in Berkeley, he didn’t only threaten to arrest the lawbreakers, he vowed to cut off federal funds for the entire university. Maybe that’ll quiet ’em! In Trump’s America, silence from others is definitely golden again, just like a certain Fifth Avenue tower and a pair of Donald J. Trump Signature Collection Cufflinks ($100 plus $4.99 shipping on Amazon). Steve Bannon, the official White House id, really set the tone when he snarled that the media ought to “keep its mouth shut and just listen for a while.” I thought there might be hope here. Then, I called 202-456-1111, the popular White House comment line. Turns out the White House comment line isn’t taking comments anymore. A recording said try a website or Facebook Messenger, though the White House Facebook page didn’t seem to be taking messages either. California Congresswoman Jackie Speier has a bill, the Phone the White House Act, cutting off funds to the Executive Office until the comment line is restored. “The president needs to recognize that his job also includes listening to all Americans, not just the echo chamber in the White House,” Speier said. How much longer till the president has an answer for her? Shut up now!

TRAVEL CHANGES Technology firms to urge Trump to alter US travel ban Several technology companies plan to send a letter to President Donald Trump on Monday urging his administration to follow through on proposed changes to a travel ban on seven mainly Muslim nations, sources familiar with the letter said Sunday. “We welcome the changes your administration has made in recent days in how the Department of Homeland Security will implement the Executive Order,”

according to a draft of the letter. The technology companies expected to sign the letter include Apple Inc., Facebook Inc., Alphabet Inc.’s Google, Twitter Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo Inc. The sources did not want to be identified because discussions regarding the letter were ongoing. On Jan. 27, Trump issued an executive order imposing a 90-day ban affecting citizens from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen and a 120-day

bar on all refugees. Those travel bans caused chaos by trapping some travelers at airports and stranding others overseas. A federal judge on Friday put a temporary nationwide block on that week-old executive order, leading the Republican president to criticize the judge and the court system. “We stand ready to help your administration identify other opportunities to ensure that our employees can travel with predictability and without

undue delay,” the technology companies, some of which have had a frosty relationship with Trump since the campaign, said in the letter. “We are concerned ... that your recent Executive Order will affect many visa holders who work hard here in the United States and contribute to our country’s success ... our ability to grow our companies and create jobs depends on the contributions of immigrants from all backgrounds.” REUTERS

No tailgating, but no lack of partying at Super Bowl

Despite the absence of tailgating, there was no shortage of partying for Sunday’s Super Bowl, as what has grown to become a virtual U.S. national holiday was set to kick off at Houston’s NRG Stadium. Heavy security surrounding the suburban Houston site for the NFL title clash between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons shut the door on tailgating as fans had to park remotely and ride buses to the 73,000-seat stadium. But ticket holders were already in full party mode after a dizzying weekend of high-energy fun in the city center by an estimated 140,000 out-of-town visitors that poured in and those able to make it to the private parties dotted around the Texas oil capital. A-listers, movie stars, and business titans filled VIP parties across the city, from the Maxim bash to the Taste of the NFL, which benefits the homeless, to the exclusive Bootsy Bellows soiree in a private club tucked in a corner of downtown. Fergie, Usher, Snoop Dogg, Cee-Lo Green and Busta Rhymes, actor Jon Hamm and Ludacris were spotted among

party-goers and even Patriots owner Robert Kraft rocked out on stage with rapper Flo Rida on at the Fanatics Super Bowl party. Taylor Swift dazzled a packed crowd at Club Nomadic for the DirecTV bash. Some $350 million was expected to pour into the city’s economy. Tickets prices just before kickoff on the online resale market were ranging from $2,700 apiece to over $5,000, and one needed more money, of course, to keep the party vibe going helped by 115 concession stands in the stadium. “It’s expensive! These beers are $15 a piece, I paid nine dollars for a pretzel!” joked Jon Ostrowski, a Pats fan who made the trip from Atlanta with a childhood friend from Connecticut. Larry Anderson, a farmer and Patriots fan from Omaha, Nebraska, was spending his pregame in the “Bud Light Lounge.” “I’m super excited to be here,” said Anderson, who came with his son. “We’ll probably drink a lot and yell a lot.” The Super Bowl party, of course, stretches beyond Houston. Americans will consume more food on Sunday on any other day of year except Thanksgiving, going through 1.3 billion chicken wings and wash them down with 325 million gallons of beer. REUTERS

For Fuad Sharef and his family, the tortuous ordeal of getting from Iraq to Nashville, Tennessee, was nearly over more than a week after it was to begin. The former U.S. development agency subcontractor, his wife and three children landed in New York on Sunday afternoon on their second attempt to reach the United States to begin a long-awaited new life. “We are very happy to be here,” Sharef said at John F. Kennedy International Airport. “It was a long time to get here — a lot to get here.” The Sharef family was one of many who endured more than a week of uncertainty after President Donald Trump signed a 90-day ban on citizens of Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen from entering the United States on national security grounds. Like the Sharef family, many of them took advantage of a Seattle judge’s ruling on Friday, effectively suspending the executive order until at least Monday, to complete their disrupted journeys, rather than risk the window shutting tight again. About a week earlier, the Sharefs were prevented from boarding a U.S.-bound flight via Cairo after Trump issued the order, which also included a 120-day ban on all refugees. But hours after the judge’s ruling on Friday, they took one of the first planes out of Erbil, the capital of the Kurdish region in northern Iraq, with a connection to the United States. Landing at JFK, they were soon to board a short flight to their final destination in Tennessee. “Yeah, my life changed dramatically,” Sharef said, reflecting on the tumultuous week before leaving Erbil. “I learned a lesson that if you have a right, never surrender.” The Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition planned to welcome Sharef’s family

when they arrived. “Nashvillians fought to bring them home — and now we can show them the very best of Southern hospitality!,” the coalition said on a Facebook event page. Nael Zaino, a Syrian refugee who worked for the International Organization for Migration in Turkey, also received help from Americans. He was reunited with family in Boston on Saturday after getting a waiver from the State Department, thanks to intervention by U.S. lawmakers contacted by Zaino’s relatives. Zaino’s arrival was relatively smooth, though he was pulled out of the arrival line, put through “secondary screening” and asked a long series of questions before a U.S. agent stamped his passport and gave him a friendly send-off. “I didn’t believe it until I came out of the airport,” Zaino said. “At that moment I realized I’m not in a dream.” Zaino had received a visa to join his wife and U.S.-born infant son in Los Angeles on Jan. 27, but was blocked from traveling after Trump signed his executive order the same day, according to his sisterin-law. “We’ve been lobbying a lot of senators in the last few days,” said Katty al-Hayek, a doctoral student in Massachusetts with her own pending asylum claim, who met him at the airport. “It’s been a long, stressful story but senators … were able to get

him a waiver from the State Department.” Shahram Javan, 43, of Baltimore, was at Washington’s Dulles airport on Sunday afternoon to greet his in-laws, Iranian citizens with U.S. visas that converted to green cards upon entry into the country. With the visas set to expire at the end of February, Javan feared his in-laws would never make it through as a result of the ban. “We were so stressed the last 10 days,” Javan said. “But now we are so happy.” Others, like Rana Shamasha, 32, an Iraqi refugee in Lebanon, were not so lucky. She was due to travel to the United States with her two sisters and mother on Feb. 1 to join relatives in Detroit until their trip was canceled as a result of the travel ban. She was waiting to hear from United Nations officials overseeing their case. “If they tell me there is a plane tomorrow morning, I will go. If they tell me there is one in an hour, I will go,” she told Reuters by telephone in Beirut, saying their bags were still packed. REUTERS

A picture taken on Sunday shows portraits of Abdallah El-Hamahmy, an Egyptian suspected of being the machete attacker in Paris’s Louvre museum, placed on a sofa at the family home in the Nile delta city of Mansura. GETTY IMAGES

The 29-year-old arrived in France on Jan. 26 after obtaining a tourist visa in Dubai. Egyptian security officials have not said whether he had any known links to militant groups. The machete-wielding attacker who was shot by a soldier outside France’s Louvre museum refused to answer investigators on Sunday after being formally placed into custody at a hospital, a source at the Paris prosecutor’s office said. Abdullah Reda alHamahmy, an Egyptian, was shot several times on Friday after attacking soldiers as he cried “Allahu Akbar in what French President Francois Hollande described as a terrorist attack. “The first interview took place this morning, but it turned out to be a short one. For the moment, he refuses to talk to investigators, the source at the prosecutor’s office said. Hamahmy’s father told Reuters it was “nonsense to suggest his son was a terrorist, saying that the youngest of

four children was a law graduate who had been working in the United Arab Emirates for about five years and was in Paris on business. Hours before the Louvre attack, an entry on Hamahmy’s Twitter account was posted reading: “Why are they afraid of the establishment of an Islamic state? Because the country of Islam will defend its resources and territory and the honour and dignity of Muslims. Reuters could not independently verify the authenticity of the tweet and the account has since been shut down. The incident underlined the Islamist militant threat facing France, which is still under a state of emergency as presidential elections loom following a series of attacks over the past two years that have killed more than 230 people. Hamahmy’s father, Reda Al Refaai, in an interview on Saturday accused French officials

of fabricating the allegations against his son to excuse the force used to stop him. Asked if his son had shown Islamist militant tendencies, the retired police major general said: “If he had I would have thrown him out of the house. French investigators are hunting for clues to establish whether he acted alone, on impulse, or on orders from someone. He attacked troops checking bags near the museum’s shopping mall with a machete in each hand, wounding one soldier. Hamahmy’s father said he last spoke to his son a few hours before the attack and that they had discussed what colour hat Hamahmy should buy to protect him against the cold weather of Paris. He said he heard the news of the Louvre incident via Facebook. Shortly afterward, police came to his house to ask some questions before leaving. REUTERS

US coalition bombs Islamic State-held town near Euphrates Dam Islamic State fighters are battling hard to keep the swathes of territory they have captured in Syria, mostly in the center and east, as they lose ground in Iraq. U.S-led coalition planes bombed an Islamic Statecontrolled town near the Euphrates Dam in northern Syria a day after the launch of a new phase of a campaign to capture the militants’ de facto capital of Raqqa, activists and the militants said on Sunday. Activists confirmed reports released by the militants’ news agency Amaq which said four raids in the last 24 hours hit

the town of Tabqa west of Raqqa, located near Syria’s largest dam, at the southern end of Lake Assad on the Euphrates. A video released by Amaq showed extensive damage to a commercial center in the town but did mention any casualties. On Friday, airstrikes in Raqqa hit at least four bridges over the Euphrates River, part of a weeks-long campaign of airstrikes in the province and near the dam, activists said. The Euphrates Dam is one of the major sources of electricity in the country and crucial for irrigation of farms in the fertile region around Raqqa. On the ground, the Syrian Democratic Forces, an alliance of U.S.-backed

militias, started a new phase of its campaign against Raqqa on Saturday, aiming to surround it and sever the road to militant strongholds in Deir al-Zor province. The SDF, which includes the powerful Kurdish YPG militia, launched the campaign to capture

Raqqa in November. The alliance of militias quickly gained territory to the north of the city at the beginning of the campaign and has been targeting areas to the west of it. It is the main U.S. partner in the fight against Islamic State in Syria. REUTERS

You have to give this to President Donald Trump: He is wasting no time launching his big plans for change. But what’s that they say about “equal and opposite reactions”? Yeah, that’s happening too. Here are my three things to watch this week in politics. 1. HITTING THE WALL As President Trump steamed through his first two weeks in office signing papers, making phone calls and blurting out pronouncements, you could feel congressional Republicans getting twitchy. Now with his approval numbers already dipping, the first potentially serious resistance is rising. Amid loud protests from some quarters and quiet warnings from others, some GOPers are preparing to resist his plan for a border wall. Not for philosophical reasons, but for practical ones: They don’t want taxpayers to pay for it, and they’re not convinced Mexico will. Stay tuned.

TOM FOREMAN Opinion

2. FACTS MACHINE Glass houses. Stones. You know how this works. For weeks Team Trump has relentlessly lectured, ridiculed and scorned the media for what the administration considers inaccurate reporting; then late last week one of their own let fly with a statement of fact which proved to be — um, you know, not a fact at all. Advisor

Kellyanne Conway later admitted she was mistaken when she referred to a nonexistent act of terrorism called the Bowling Green Massacre. What to watch: Will the boss call her out for a public lashing as he has others? After all, facts are facts, even when they are alternative … aren’t they? 3. GETTING SCHOOLED President Trump’s choice for secretary of education, Betsy DeVos, will be sweating out her final grade this week when the Senate votes to confirm her … or not. Republican support has grown shaky amid ethics questions and a lackluster Q&A between DeVos and lawmakers. As of this writing, the decision could come down to a single vote. She’ll be working the phones right up until the final moment of this big pass/fail test, knowing if she doesn’t make it President Trump will take a hit, too. This week’s Trumpitude: 68 percent and falling.

Kylie Minogue and Joshua Sasse are over and done Iconic pop star Kylie Minogue confirmed her breakup with Joshua Sasse in an emotional Instagram post Friday. According to Huffington Post, just days before she announced the split Minogue was gushing about her upcoming nuptials and dishing on taking her partner’s last name. The 48-year-old singer met Sasse on the set of “Galavant,” in 2015, in which Sasse played the titular character and Minogue guest-starred. I saw that episode. It was really good. I mean their chemistry didn’t give me chills or anything, but it was really good. Sasse

was rumored to be getting close to Spanish actress Marta Milans, and that may have caused the split. In her Instagram post, Kylie wishes her ex the best, which is really big of her.

Kristen Stewart dropped the F-bomb on ‘SNL’

What a cool, mature lady. It wouldn’t be me. But in happier news, Minogue recently won a battle against Kylie Jenner, who was attempting to trademark their shared name, and thank goodness. We’re forever #TeamMinogue on this one.

some more, the “Twilight” actress gleefully declared herself as “so gay, dude.” We can’t wait to see how he’ll spin this. But that wasn’t it: Melissa McCarthy debuted her Sean Spicer impression and it was terrifyingly spot on. The actress is handsdown the best person to play the intense Spicer. Also, someone congratulate the wig department on “SNL,” because they got Spicer’s extreme side part very, very right.

Kristen Stewart made her debut as host and was visibly very pumped. So much so she dropped the F-bomb on live television! Go girl. But the best part of her opening monologue was her take down of President Trump — who has a history of obsessively trolling her on Twitter. He’s tweeted about her 11 times! To enrage him

Chelsea Peretti and Jordan Peele are havin’ a baby! “Brooklyn Nine Nine” actress Chelsea Peretti and her husband, Jordan Peele, are expecting. The actress and comedian posted a cute lil’ subtle selfie on Instagram on the tail of Beyoncé’s own recordbreaking announcement. The post — a selfie of Peretti with the caption “beyonce schmonce” — is pretty standard for the low-

key couple, who eloped last April. According to Refinery29, they met via Twitter and were introduced by mutual friend Andy Samberg. Peele, of course, is most popular for his show “Key & Peele” with fellow comedian Keegan-Michael Key, which ended in 2015. Congratulations, y’all! It’s really brave to be procreating during the Trump era, so good for you guys!

Jeffrey Tambor and Gronk face off for the Super Bowl The odd couple teams up for Tide. KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn

kate.mooney@metro.us

Jeffrey Tambor is a legendary funnyman, from “The Larry Sanders Show” to “Arrested Development.” On Super Bowl Sunday, the Emmy award-winning “Transparent” actor did his thing opposite the New England Patriots’ Rob “Gronk” Gronkowski in a spot for Tide. The 72-year-old actor called in from Houston for the big game to talk about dabbing (really), his debut memoir “Are You Anybody,” and how he has no idea what “broing out” is. What was it like hanging out with Gronk? Oh, Gronk was great, we were just talking about how charming he was. And what a good actor he was. He was terrific. He’s like a little kid. A tall

little kid. A little tall kid. Did you bro out together? I don’t even know what you’re talking about. I don’t think I’ve ever “bro-ed out.” What does “bro out” mean? You can write about this: “Jeffrey Tambor has no idea what a bro out means.” What is a bro out? I want a definition. We should probably ask Gronk. Let’s move on. What’s that thing you do when you drop the mic? A mic drop? No, dab. Someone had to teach me about dabbing the other day. You and I have no idea what we’re talking about. I’m 70. How old are you? 30. See, that’s the problem. We’re big fans of “Transparent.” What’s in store for Maura heading into Season 4?

MICHAEL WILLIAMS/STARTRACKS

We just had our first table read literally three days ago. It was amazing, everyone just burst into applause. I don’t know all that much, I’m not being coy — and I ask not to know, I like to be surprised. It’s going to be a great season. We read that you and [“Transparent” costar] Judith Light have

What was it like filming “The Death of Stalin” in our current political climate? [Director] Armando Iannucci has a great sensibility. It’s very funny, it’s very frightening, it’s very sad. It’s like one moment you’re doing “King Lear”; the next, “The Ropers.” It’s the craziest script I’ve ever seen. I love it. I would work with Iannucci anywhere, anytime. Is there anything you wish you’d get asked in interviews that you’d like to talk about? Well, let’s see: the loss of hair, I’d love to talk about. My father cried when I went bald, that’s a true story. Oh, they want me to say Tide. You know, this is quite a moment. I will this Sunday be seen by close to 180 million people. That’s more than dinner theater, I can tell you that.

been close friends for decades. What’s it like working with her on the show? She’s great. She’s one of the great actresses. We’ve known each other for many years, we did theater together at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater when we were little kids. Now she plays my wife [on “Transparent’]; she’s truly an artistic killer.

Any upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about? I have a book that’s coming out called “Are You Anybody.” It’s sort of a memoir, based on a member of the press who came up to me one day outside the Broadhurst Theater and said, “Are you anybody?” and I said, “No.”

So “Finding Doryâ€? is political now. “Finding Dory.â€? The new Pixar movie. It was the ďŹ lm Donald Trump was watching while protesters raged against his “Muslim banâ€? — a nice, animated delight about families being reunited, screened in the

White House while real ones were being torn apart outside. We long for a simpler time, when light, funny, creative entertainments — featuring a talking octopus driving a truck — didn’t suddenly seem topical. Anyway, of course the Big Cheeto didn’t get the ďŹ lm’s messages: about how we work better together, how we should look out for each other, how the real villains are heartless systems that keep us apart. So, parents, sit your kids in front of this. That way they can learn lessons they won’t be getting from the new president of the United States.

Speaking of the immigration ban: Among the many currently blocked from entering our country is Ashgar Farhadi, one of the world’s ďŹ nest ďŹ lmmakers, who just happens to hail from Iran. If you don’t live in a city showing it, you can head to FilmStruck

and watch “A Separation, a Farhadi that already did win an Oscar, back in 2011. An Ibsenesque drama about a divorcing couple who inadvertently almost destroy a low-income family, it betrays its maker as a deep humanist, insightful about how good people can’t always control their worst instincts. It’d be a masterpiece even if it wasn’t, in its way, yet another “movie of the moment.

It wouldn’t be our pick for best ďŹ lm of the aughts — we’d bully for “Zodiac,â€? ourselves — but David Lynch’s 2001 mystery-cum-mindf—k was last year named by a tony BBC poll the ďŹ nest piece of cinema from the previous decade. It’s a totally worthy pick — one of Lynch’s most elusive yet seductive works, not to mention endlessly rewatchable. Originally made as a TV pilot, which was unceremoniously rejected, it was rejiggered as a movie when French ďŹ nanciers came to the rescue, giving Lynch the cash to tack on an ending. He changed nothing of the ďŹ rst two-thirds, and one of the richest ways to watch the ďŹ lm is as a TV show, with clear spots for commercial breaks and storylines that will never be resolved, that eventually turns into a wackadoodle movie. Think of it as the best both of both worlds.

22 THINGS TO DO

Philly’s asking, ‘What’s the craic?’ The new radio show is where Philly meets Dublin. JENNIFER LOGUE @jenniferlogue

jennifer.logue@metro.us

If you’re a fan of Philly’s thriving music scene and Irish culture in general, you should be tuning in to “Craic Radio, a program hosted by two Dubliners turned Philadelphians — Fergus “Fergie Carey and Sean Timmons. “Craic (pronounced “crack) is the Gaelic word for gossip, and this spirited duo fills in listeners on all that’s buzzing in Philly music and more through a distinctly Irish lens. We chat with Carey and Timmons about what to expect from the show and how Philly and Dublin are actually quite similar. How did you two meet?

Sean Timmons: We actually met at somebody’s party. I can’t remember the guy’s name. Fergus Carey: It was Michael Toner’s 40th birthday or something. He’s an Irish-American actor. Sean: Put the two of us together and you get the whole story. That’s why we’re on the radio. Fergus: We have a shared mind. What was the inspiration behind the show? Fergie: One of the inspirations for us was that my favorite radio station seems to have a lot of repeats. If you listen in the middle of the night, they’re repeating their afternoon show. I was like, “Sean, we should do a show. Play music and talk to musicians. Sean: We’ve known each other a long time. We both know that we

like music a lot. We both came from Dublin to Philadelphia. We love it here, we love Philadelphia, but we also feel like we have an outside view of things from time to time. What’s the format like? Sean: We have a couple different things that we do every week. One is called “Discovery

Rediscovery, and the idea is that we can take a musician who might be known in this country for maybe one song. People here might think they’re a one-hit wonder and back over in Ireland, they could have a 25-year career. Fergie: One of those bands we featured was Madness. They have so many hits and they’re

Who needs New York Fashion Week? ALEXANDER KACALA @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

Ever wanted to meet Anna Wintour? This just may be your chance. Well, sort of. Comedian Ryan Raftery is bringing his one-man show “Ryan Raftery is the Most Powerful Woman in Fashion — The Anna Wintour Musical to the Kimmel Center for a limited engagement beginning Feb. 9. After successful runs in New York City and Los Angeles, Raftery’s embodiment of the fashion maven has landed him on Andy Cohen’s “Watch What Happens and in The New York Times. We had the opportunity to check in with the comedian about his show before he brings it to the Kimmel. What can audiences expect from your show? It’s based on Anna Wintour’s decision to place Kim and Kanye on the cover of Vogue and the immediate backlash that followed on social media. It’s a straight-up comedy set to popular music that I have changed the

Why do you think audiences have responded so well to this work? Anna is kind of like a real-life Disney villain, except she isn’t evil. She always looks flawless and doesn’t take any sh— from anyone. Ever since the success of “The Devil Wears Prada, there has been a heightened public interest in her. Then, she agreed to do “The September Issue, a documentary about the goings on that surround the creation of her magazine’s most important issue of the year. She showed herself at home with her daughter in endearing maternal moments and then at work exhibiting her patented form of icy decisiveness. I think my show rounds her out as a human being with real fears and anxieties. What was it about Anna Wintour that made you want to devote an entire show to her? At the time, I had a day job working for Coach in their public relations department. I was an assistant and it was at the time when Coach was about to show their collection at New York Fashion Week for the very first time in their 70-year history. I was amazed by how many times I heard the name “Anna. “Anna won’t come, but she might send Virginia. “Anna would hate that. And then word came that Anna wanted to see the collection, but she wouldn’t come to the fashion show. So we had to pack up the entire collection and bring it to her office. Clearly, I was not invited into her office but I had to help bring the clothes there. The second I stepped off the elevator, I could feel the disturbance in the air. I’m not kidding. It was just like “The Devil Wears Prada. Girls in stilettos were running around, rolling racks being pushed. I knew that I had found

my next subject. Her daughter came to your show in New York. What was that like? I really believe that Bee’s attendance at my show changed the trajectory of my career. She came on opening night and it was very sold out. I was told later that she could not get tickets and she had someone from NBC (she works as a segment producer on Seth Meyers’ show) call and the venue literally created a table for her. I was very concerned how she would handle the show. There is a dance number where Anna sings about her affair and subsequent divorce. I seriously considered taking that part out of the show, but decided against it — hoping she’d have a sense of humor. Turns out, she did! She was in my dressing room before I got there after the show and we took photos together. She Instagrammed a photo of us with a caption calling me her “surrogate mother. That garnered the attention of The New York Times (who came to the next show and featured me in the paper) as well as outlets in six different countries. It was a gamechanger, for sure. Any feedback from Anna? Bee later told me that she showed video [she took] to Anna and she was amused, commenting: “He didn’t get the fashion right. In my entire career, I have never been more nervous. I also know you are working on a Martha Stewart show for New York next. How is that going? I’ve never had more fun researching a subject (sorry, Anna and Andy). There is so much there to dramatize. I’m excited about the prison dance break. “Ryan Raftery Is the Most Powerful Woman in Fashion — The Anna Wintour Musical runs Feb. 9-11 at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. The road to college has turned into an autobahn for some high school seniors this year. BETH PINSKER REUTERS

letters@metro.us

While the official deadline for making a college decision is May 1, thousands of students across the United States already have been admitted to the schools of their choice. Many also have received financial aid offers, thanks to a new timetable from the Department of Education, which moved up the start date for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to Oct. 1 from Jan. 1. Yet making an educated decision about which school to attend is hard for admitted students because financial aid information is not available from all of them. “My families are just freaking out. It’s almost too much time to be waiting, says college financial-aid consultant Jodi Okun. Traditionally, colleges distributed financial aid letters to admitted students in mid-March. But some institutions, such as Kalamazoo College in Michigan and the Univer-

sity of Denver, moved up their financial aid award notifications as well, sending out letters to admitted students immediately. College-funding expert Mark Kantrowitz, publisher at Cappex.com, estimated that half to two-thirds of colleges are sending out some kind of real award letters to already-accepted students. Schools with admitted students at this point in the year would be those with rolling admissions as well as early decisions (a binding commitment) and action (which can wait until May 1). The majority of students, however, will not receive acceptances until March or later, with their financial-aid packages arriving shortly after. It has not been easy for schools to juggle the new deadlines. The College of Wooster, a Scottish-Presbyterian institution in Wooster, Ohio, had to accelerate all sorts of other deadlines in order to get aid letters out in January to the first batch of accepted students. That included moving up auditions for competitive scholarships, which caused a bit of a space crunch when it came to bagpipers needing an indoor space to try out in January, as opposed to being able to do it outdoors

in March. “It was an organizational challenge, said W. Scott Friedhoff, Wooster’s vice president for enrollment and college relations. And not just for the institution: “Now families have to be a little more alert about deadlines that have changed. The intention of the new timeline is to provide a bigger window for consideration of financial options. In particular, families can appeal for more aid if they feel the award is not adequate, Kantrowitz said. Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin, is making it easier for admitted students to talk over their financial-aid offers this year. It had a visiting day last Saturday with slots every 20 minutes to ask questions, and filled every one. The timeline benefits some schools, too. Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana, is using the new calendar to counter competitors who give out merit aid. In the past, the students it coveted were already spoken for by the time the school sent out need-based offers. “This levels the playing field for bottomdollar costs, said Thomas Ratliff, the school’s associate vice president. More time also gives

high school seniors a chance to re-visit schools and do all-important things like taste the food, which Kantrowitz urges students to take seriously. “It is a real consideration for some, he said. “They arrive on campus and form a first impression. More time will allow them to make a more deliberative, informed impression. But the early aid offers have drawbacks too, most notably, accelerating the age-old senior slide. “You get in, you get a great offer, it gives you more time to slack off, Kantrowitz warned. “Offers of admission are conditional — they are dependent on final grades. If you have a serious slump, the school could rescind the offer. Another potential negative exists for the type-A student who is driven, anxious and unable to wait. Okun has a client who got into her dream school, the University of San Francisco, and received her award letter. But she is not celebrating yet because she has to wait for award letters from the other six schools on her list. “I keep telling her, ‘I know it’s hard,’ Okun said. “But talk to the school, revisit, and decide if you can really afford it.

26 JOBS

MBA or EMBA: Which one’s right for you? Know the facts before you apply.

Often, the executive MBA (EMBA) is misconstrued as a superior form of MBA study, but the truth is the two degrees hold equal cachet. What does set them apart is their purpose and delivery format, factors which lead to entirely different experiences. Here are some points to consider in your decision-making process and when meeting with schools at fairs, like the QS World MBA tour, to discuss options.

Program pace, length and curriculum Metaphorically speaking, while an EMBA can be seen as a series of sprints, the MBA can be

likened to a marathon. Though program length will vary by school, the principal difference is that the EMBA is always part-time to accommodate working professionals. Typically, some of the learning takes place by distance and/or online, while in-person EMBA classes are held on weekends, evenings or even at different locations around the world. For example, UCLA Anderson offers two EMBA options: one fully in-person and the other split between half in-person, half online. Both options require all students to complete a one-week international component. While both EMBA and MBA curricula cover the same core material, EMBA programs tend to offer fewer electives. As such, MBA students will often enjoy more freedom when selecting classes, with the possibility of taking a concentration/ specialization or track.

Choose the best option for you. Register for the QS World MBA tour at topmba.com/metro. ISTOCK

However, there are also targeted EMBAs, such as Yale’s program focusing on health care, or the University of Miami’s EMBA aimed at NFL stars.

Admissions requirements Another difference between the two degrees is that they are catered to professionals at different

stages in their career. EMBAs are designed for managers with extensive prior work experience, generally in the range of 10 to 15 years, substantially more than the three to five years usually held by MBA candidates. Full-time MBA admissions also place more emphasis on GMAT scores as a way to help differentiate candidates during the selection process. EMBA admissions, on the other hand, often do not require standardized entrance-exam scores, although some EMBA programs, such as Columbia Business School, allow you to take a new EMBA-oriented version of the GMAT. Additionally, for the EMBA, it’s especially important for proof that you have support from your employer, as work-study balance will affect program success.

candidates can expect a salary increase upon graduation. EMBA graduates saw an average salary boost of 12 percent, according to a 2016 survey of U.S. programs. MBAs, by comparison — with much more to gain as they tend to be earlier on in their careers — saw an increase of 75 percent in compensation postgraduation, according to a 2015 QS ROI (return on investment) report looking at the U.S. and Canada. Of course, degree format also has significant financial implications here. EMBA students earn a fulltime salary while studying and don’t incur the same costs associated with relocation for a full-time MBA program.

Reasons why Super Bowl LI was the best one ever

The Patriots scored 31 unanswered points in an incredible comeback win earning their fifth Super Bowl. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

Sunday’s NFL Championship tilt between the Falcons and Patriots had all the makings of a stinker, as Atlanta’s seemingly insurmountable lead and a potent Falcons pass rush had many watching commercials not football. But a comeback of epic proportions saw the Patriots overcome a 25-point deficit to earn a 32-28 victory in Super Bowl LI. New England, following one of the most improbable comebacks

in sports championship history, wasted no time in overtime, marching down the field to the 2-yard line where James White reached into the end zone, clinching Tom Brady’s fifth Super Bowl title.

1The comeback

The spectacle that is the Super Bowl had entertainment value on and off the field — beginning with a valiant comeback effort from Tom Brady and New England, closing a 28-9 gap with a field goal early in the fourth quarter paired a forced fumble deep in Atlanta territory by Dont’a Hightower. Danny Amendola secured a touchdown catch at the 5:56 mark and a direct snap to James White cut it to a one-possession game. Some questionable

play-calling may have cost the Falcons an insurance field goal as New England got the ball back after some Atlanta movement with 3:30 to play. An incredible tipped pass fell securely into Julian Edelman’s hands to keep the Pats’ drive going, and a few plays later James White leaped into the end zone to cut it to two points.

Sunday’s game could go down as one of the best ever played. GETTY IMAGES

sively, Robert Alford sent another shockwave to New England, when he returned an interception 82 yards for a pick-six and a three score lead. In the second half it was a different story, as the defense allowed Brady to throw for the most yards for any quarterback in Super Bowl history.

Falcons defense 2underachieves over, then

Watching the first 15 minutes, it would have not have occurred to a casual football fan that the Patriots and Falcons had two of the NFL’s top-five offenses in 2016 — with Atlanta’s one of the most prolific in history. After a slew of three-and-outs defen-

With political discord and protests running rampant since the election of Donald Trump, the world’s biggest sporting event was not immune to the seepage of politics into every facet of American life. There wasn’t much room to skate, pass or even shoot during the Flyers’ 1-0 overtime loss to the Kings on Saturday afternoon. After one or, at the most, two strides, a player with the puck was checked by an opposing jersey. Finding a passing lane was an arduous task and getting off a shot was even harder. There wasn’t much room to do anything and the game wasn’t exactly what you would call exciting hockey, either. However, fans better get used to this style of play over the final 30 games of the season. “I think every game you’ll see it get tighter and tighter,” Flyers center Sean Couturier said. Welcome to the playoff stretch drive. It’s the time of the year when teams that want to make the playoffs

Solid play from Michal Neuvirth and Steve Mason will be critical.

sharpen their game and focus more on defense. “That is what everybody is going to do now,” winger Jake Voracek said. “It’s extra hard. Every lane, passing-wise, shooting-wise is hard to get. You have to move your feet and create that space.”

The Flyers, who hold the final wild-card spot going into Sunday’s games, know that if they are going to make the playoffs, it’s going to be on the back of their defense. Just take a look at their last six games. Aside from their dud last Tuesday against the Hurricanes,

the Flyers have allowed five goals in their last five wins. A big key to the defensive strategy is goaltending, of course, and for the last two games Michal Neuvirth has been outstanding. When the Flyers had a breakdown or coughed up the puck in their own end, Neuvirth was brilliant and bailed them out. Steve Mason has also looked sharp in the last couple of games that he started. “[Neuvirth] had a calmness to his game today and I think that’s an important aspect,” coach Dave Hakstol said. “He probably made three or four big saves for us and a bunch of other pretty good ones. He went out and he did his job and he was a big part of us gaining one point.” If nothing else, it was a hard-earned point and a valuable one. ERIC GOLDSTEIN
