HOUSE PUTS OFF VOTE ON HEALTH CARE PLAN

SENATE REPEALS BROAD- GENERAL: RUSSIA MAY BE BAND PRIVACY RULES HELPING SUPPLY TALIBAN

President Donald Trump failed on Thursday to convince enough skeptical members of his own Republican Party to begin dismantling Obamacare, forcing the House of Representatives to delay a vote on the health care legislation. The day was designed to be a big symbolic win for conservatives, with Trump and House Republican leaders planning the vote on the seventh anniversary of former Democratic President

Barack Obama signing his namesake healthc are law, formally known as the Affordable Care Act, which became a favored target of Republicans. Instead, the vote was postponed indefinitely, dealing a setback to Trump in what he hoped would be his first legislative victory. REUTERS

The U.S. Senate voted narrowly to repeal regulations requiring internet service providers to do more to protect customers’ privacy than websites like Alphabet Inc.’s Google or Facebook Inc. The vote was along party lines, with 50 Republicans approving the measure and 48 Democrats rejecting it. The two remaining Republicans in the Senate were absent and did not cast a vote.

According to the rules approved by the Federal Communications Commission in October under then-President Barack Obama, internet providers would need to obtain consumer consent before using precise geolocation, financial information, health information, children’s information and web browsing history for advertising and internal marketing. The top U.S. general in Europe said that he had seen Russian influence on Afghan Taliban insurgents growing and raised the possibility that Moscow was helping supply the militants, whose reach is expanding in southern Afghanistan. “I’ve seen the influence of Russia of late — increased influence in terms of association and perhaps even supply to the Taliban,” Army General Curtis

Scaparrotti, who is also NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, told a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing. He did not elaborate on what kinds of supplies might be headed to the Taliban or how direct Russia’s role might be. REUTERS

NUNES APOLOGIZES OVER SURVEILLANCE CLAIM

4

The Republican head of the U.S. House of Representatives Intelligence Committee apologized for the way he handled sensitive allegations about U.S. spy agency surveillance of President Donald Trump’s team. Representative Devin Nunes was criticized by colleagues on Wednesday for calling a news conference to announce that the communications of members of the team that ran Trump’s transition

to the presidency were swept up in incidental surveillance targeting foreigners. Democrats were upset that Nunes made the comments to the media and then briefed Trump in the White House without informing them. They questioned whether the intelligence panel could run a credible investigation. A Republican intelligence committee aide said on Thursday that Nunes had apologized to Democrats on the panel. Philadelphia cop accused of stuffing dog in trash bag, dumping in woods The officer, who has been suspended, adopted the dog last year and allegedly abandoned it three months later. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse

sam.newhouse@metro.us

It was a heartbreaking story of animal cruelty over the holidays. Just before Thanksgiving, a starving pit bull left in a garbage bag was found abandoned in the Wissahickon. Now, the PSPCA has announced that the person responsible was a Philadelphia police officer. Michael Long, 33, of the 8200 block of Michener Avenue, was arrested Thursday on animal cruelty charges for allegedly abandoning the pit bull, later renamed Cranberry after being rescued by

a Good Samaritan and brought to the PSPCA. Long had adopted the dog last year, officials said. The PSPCA identified Long as the owner through the dog’s microchip, said Nicole Wilson, director of Humane Law Enforcement at the PSPCA. “This is somebody that was supposed to defend the community and animals and people,” Wilson said, “and clearly there has been an abuse of that trust.” Cranberry was microchipped when Long adopted her in August 2016 from the Animal Care & Control Team of Philadelphia, just months before he allegedly put her in a garbage bag and dumped her in the woods, according to Wilson. “When he adopted it, part of that contract is if you have any problems or concerns at any time,

he could have returned it to that same organization. He didn’t,” Wilson said. “It’s obviously very disheartening that he chose the path he did.” The Philadelphia Police Department confirmed that Long, an 11-year veteran of the force assigned

to the 18th District, was arrested. Commissioner Richard Ross has ordered him suspended for 30 days with intent to dismiss, a spokeswoman said. Long could not immediately be reached for comment. It’s unknown why the dog was aban-

doned. “He has not acknowledged any wrongdoing in this case as of this time,” Wilson said. “It’s safe to say his account of events with regard to the dog is not reflected by the evidence in this case.”

Cranberry was found by a woman on a hike in the Wissahickon on Nov. 23, 2016, who spotted a garbage bag in the woods. When she approached it, she found a shivering, emaciated dog peering out. The woman called the PSPCA, and two officers soon arrived and took the animal to a shelter for care. The dog was suffering from a number of issues due to not receiving sufficient sustenance, Wilson said, and was badly in need of veterinary care when she was abandoned. Long was identified as a suspect shortly after Cranberry was found due to the microchip, Wilson said, but an arrest was delayed while the case was reviewed by city prosecutors. Cranberry has since made a full recovery and in December found a home with a new owner.

The teen’s attorney says her client has a brain tumor, which “may affect his behavior. A teenager with dual Israeli-U.S. citizenship was arrested in Israel on Thursday on suspicion of making dozens of hoax bomb threats against Jewish community centers in the United States, Australia and New Zealand. The suspect, whose identity remains sealed pursuant to a court order, is 18 years old and Jewish, a police spokesman said. The teenager’s alleged motives were not immediately clear. At a court hearing near Tel Aviv, the teen’s defense attorney, Galit Bash, said the young man has a growth in his head that causes behavioral problems. She later told Reuters he has a brain tumor, which “may affect his behavior, his ability to understand right and wrong,” and said the teen’s father had also been held in connection with the case. U.S. authorities have been investigating a surge of threats against Jewish organizations, including more than 100 bomb threats in separate waves over the past three months targeting Jewish community centers (JCCs) in dozens of states. The threats prompted criticism of President Donald Trump for what some Jewish groups saw as an inadequate response from his administration. He condemned the incidents in a major speech to Congress in February.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Thursday said the arrest reflected the government’s determination to prosecute those who perpetrate hate crimes. Israeli police said the teenager is believed to be responsible for most of the threats, though the precise number was not immediately clear. The suspect, who is accused of targeting centers in Australia and New Zealand as well as the United States, began making the calls in January using advanced masking technologies to hide his identity, police said. Authorities also said he was responsible for a previous bomb threat against a Delta Airlines flight in January 2015 at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, which took part in the probe, confirmed the arrest but declined to offer further details. The threats forced the evacuation of many JCCs, including some with daycare and school facilities for infants and young children. Coupled with other incidents such as the desecration of Jewish cemeteries, they have stoked fears of a resurgence in anti-Semitism in the United States. The NYPD told Metro that it did not have any information on whether the teen was behind any of the threats made against JCCs in New York. Metro web reporter Nikki Mascali contributed to this report. Refugees connect with college students to turn their craft-making skills into commerce Becker College students develop business plans for refugees who have artisan skills to set the Worcester community up for success. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

kristin.toussaint@metro.us

When Racquel Knight, a Jamaican immigrant, met Fadila, a recently-arrived Iraqi refugee, the two bonded over their childhood education, which focused on learning trades like sewing and weaving. But it wasn’t just idle conversation. Knight, 27 and a student at Becker College in Worcester, Massachusetts is helping Fadila and refugees like her turn their skills into viable businesses. The unique program

is part of the “Social Business” course that Becker College offers. This year, the course is partnering with a local refugee advocacy organization, connecting students with refugee craft makers. In Worcester, a city of 180,000 people, there is a significant immigrant population to draw from. There are around 36,000 foreign-born residents, about 21 percent of the total population, according to a 2015 report. They include a good number of entrepreneurs, with immigrants comprising 37 percent of the city’s small business owners. The Becker College class is trying to help along that kind of entrepreneurial spirit among the refugees. At the culmination of the semester, the refugees working with the Becker class will display their creations on Sunday, as part of an event called “Stu-

dents and Refugee Artists Together: A Celebration of Indigenous Craft and Social Business.” It will take place on the school’s Leicester Campus, at 964 Main St., in Leicester. Taylor Caforio, a senior at Becker, is president of the school’s business

club and a member of the Students and Refugee Artisans Together advisory board. The organization partnered with Refugee Artisans of Worcester, which helped organize Sunday’s event, and connected Becker with the refugees.

When refugees come to the United States, they are searching for a better life while also struggling to fit in, speak the language, get a job and earn a living. “These refugees, it took a very long time for them to get [to the U.S.],

up to 20 years just in refugee camps, and the fact that they’re here now is great,” Caforio said. “But they don’t have a secure economic standing.” Helping them pursue their crafts as a business provides a link to their culture, not to mention future possibilities and potentially, extra money, said Debra Pallatto-Fontaine, a professor at Becker College. Dar Ku, a refugee from Burma, is one of the artisans getting help with her business plan. She works at a local TJ Maxx clothing store warehouse by day, and in her spare time, also weaves traditional Burmese scarves, shirts and skirts. They will be for sale Sunday, when more than 20 refugees will have a chance to show off their work. For more information about the refugee crafts, visit Metro.us.

UK parliament attacker named as British-born Khalid Masood Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement issued by its Amaq news agency, but did not name Masood and gave no details. The attacker who killed three people near parliament in London before being shot dead was named on Thursday as a 52-year-old British-born man, Khalid Masood, who was once investigated by MI5 intelligence officers over concerns about violent extremism. The death toll from Wednesday’s attack on the heart of Britain’s democracy grew to five as police said one of the injured, a 75-year-man, had died in hospital after

his life support was withdrawn. That number included Masood, 52, who was shot dead by police. Police said Masood was born in the county of Kent in southeast England and was most recently living in the West Midlands region of central England. “Masood was not the subject of any current investigations and there was no prior intelligence about his intent to mount a terrorist attack,” the Metropolitan Police said in a statement. “However, he was known to police and has a range of previous convictions for assaults, including GBH (grievous bodily harm), possession of offensive weapons and public order offences.” Prime Minister Theresa May told parliament the attacker had once been investigated by the

MI5 intelligence agency over concerns about violent extremism, but had been a peripheral figure. Police said Masood had never been convicted of a terrorist offense. His first conviction was in 1983 for criminal damage and his last one in December 2003 for possession of a knife. During five minutes of mayhem in the heart

Masood, two members of the public, and Keith Palmer, the 48-year-old policeman stabbed by Masood. “He will be deeply missed. We love him so much,” Palmer’s family said in a statement. He was married with a fiveyear-old daughter. A minute’s silence was held in parliament and outside police headquarters on Thursday morning. A police Twitter account said it had been held at 0933 GMT because 933 was the shoulder number on Palmer’s uniform, but that tweet was later deleted and police released a different number. As dusk fell, hundreds gathered in London’s Trafalgar Square in a vigil to remember the victims. With traffic diverted away, volunteers handed out candles in an eerie silence. REUTERS

of London on Wednesday, Masood sped across Westminster Bridge in a car, plowing into pedestrians. He then ran through the gates of the nearby parliamentary precinct and fatally stabbed an unarmed policeman before being shot dead. Police arrested eight people at six locations in London and Birmingham in the investigation into

the attack, which May said was inspired by a warped Islamist ideology. All were suspected of preparing terrorist acts, police later confirmed. The Enterprise rental car company said the vehicle used had been rented from its Spring Hill branch in Birmingham, which is in the West Midlands. About 40 people were injured, of whom 29 remained in hospital on Thursday evening, seven in critical condition. May visited some of the wounded, her spokesman said. The bloodshed took place on the first anniversary of attacks that killed 32 people in Brussels, and resembled Islamic Stateinspired attacks in France and Germany where vehicles were driven into crowds. Here are three things I believe unequivocally: 1) My wife and dog like me even when I am a bonehead. Well, at least the dog. 2) Fried foods are an underappreciated cornerstone of civilization and must never be scorned. And 3) The truth matters. I mention that last one because this week Time posted a big interview with President Trump in which that did not seem to be the case. Let me be more direct. It was like a discussion of reality in a sauna with Salvador Dali. Through a meandering series of stream-of-consciousness answers, the president painted truth as utterly subject to interpretation … or rather, his interpretation. On his widely reported (and unproven) claims about wiretapping by the Obama administration, millions of fraudulent votes in the last election, and Ted Cruz’s father sipping coffee with President Kennedy’s assassin, Mr. Trump repeatedly refused

TOM FOREMAN Opinion

to acknowledge any mistake, misstatement, half-truth or lie. Instead, and oddly for a man who shouts “fake news” like “olé” at a bullfight, he defended and repeated several of his false claims by saying he read them in the paper. Or saw them online. Or heard them somewhere; as if a president would have no resources to, oh say, check those claims for accuracy. It’s circular

logic, of course, sort of like: I believe any jobs reports showing progress by my predecessor were fabricated because they didn’t suit my needs. Now they do, so they must be real. By the end I was recalling a great Steely Dan lyric: “Don’t believe I’m taken in by stories I have heard, I just read the Daily News and swear by every word.” But the words in this interview are hard to swear by because they are so filled with misdirection, falsehoods, and hints of falsehoods. President Trump most assuredly says things that are true. He can make valid points. He often cuts through the D.C. noise and nonsense better than most, and heaven knows this town could use more of that. But his seeming belief that he can freely spout rubbish; that “truth” is whatever he deems it to be is dangerous for the country — and for him. Because the truth trumps popes, potentates and yes — even presidents.

US State Department to approve Keystone pipeline permit Friday The State Department will approve Friday the permit needed to proceed with construction of the Canada-to-United States Keystone XL oil pipeline, according to two government sources familiar with the process. The move would mark the beginning of process that could be lengthy and complicated by approvals needed by state regulators and legal challenges. The project was blocked by former President Barack Obama. But days after taking office in January, President Donald Trump, a Republican who supports Keystone, ordered its construction. That could mean that project, proposed in 2008, will eventually be completed. White House spokesman Sean Spicer said the administration would provide an update on Keystone on Friday but

did not offer any details. One government source familiar with the process said Thursday the State Department was working to get the approval done before Monday, the end of the 60-day timeline under Trump’s January executive order for the construction of Keystone and the Dakota Access pipelines. The State Department’s undersecretary for political affairs, Tom Shannon, is expected

approve the cross-border permit for TransCanada Corp.’s pipeline since Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, the former CEO of ExxonMobil, recused himself from the matter. The multibillion-dollar Keystone pipeline would bring more than 800,000 barrels per day of heavy crude from Canada’s oil sands to U.S. refineries and ports along the Gulf of Mexico via an existing pipeline network in Nebraska. Obama had rejected the pipeline, saying it

would do nothing to reduce fuel prices for U.S. motorists and would contribute emissions linked to global warming. TransCanada resubmitted its permit application after Trump’s executive order. Spokesman Terry Cunha said the company was working closely with the State Department. Conservatives said they supported quick approval. Nick Loris, an energy and environment researcher at the Heritage Foundation, said approval would “reestablish some certainty and sanity to a permitting process that was hijacked by political pandering.” Environmental group Greenpeace had pushed for Tillerson to recuse himself from the decision on Keystone, as Exxon could profit from the pipeline. It said it would fight the project. REUTERS

FRED BEANS REPEATS HISTORIC USED CAR SALE Doylestown, PA – Fred Beans, CEO and founder of the Fred Beans Automotive Group located in Doylestown, PA, has announced a ONE DAY SALE on Saturday, March 25th at 9:00AM, where pre-owned vehicles will be sold for as low as $999.* This sale is being held due to overwhelming public demand. Cars will be clearly marked, so come early for the best selection. This is a ONE DAY ONLY sale designed to get the local community driving again. Fred Beans’ pre-owned inventory levels need to be reduced to make room for shipments of new models arriving daily. As a result, all 8 Fred Beans Doylestown locations are selling these overstocked pre-owned vehicles to the public at drastic discounts in an attempt to clear excess inventory. Along with this huge variety of pre-owned vehicles, the Fred Beans Family of Dealerships in Doylestown features new Ford, Lincoln, Volkswagen, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Ram, Hyundai, Genesis, Nissan, Subaru, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC vehicles.

Fred Beans believes reviving the economy starts at home, and changing things locally will lead to changing things nationally. Along with the Fred Beans Family of Dealerships’ extra inventory, additional vehicles have been acquired at incredible prices for this sale from various banks, repossession companies, auto auctions, credit unions, lease companies, and rental companies. The sale will make pre-owned vehicles available for as low as $999,* prices not normally offered to the general public. According to Fred Beans, “We want to give our customers a reason to believe in the local economy again. Someone has to look out for their best interest.” Customers are encouraged to arrive and register by 8:15AM to inspect the entire inventory and find the car that’s right for them. Every vehicle will be cleaned, detailed, and fully prepared for instant delivery. On the evening of March 24th, after the close of business, Mr. Beans and his team will mark the

special sale price on each and every vehicle. Because Fred Beans’ customers are feeling the credit crunch right now, the Fred Beans Automotive Group has given the dealerships’ financing managers the resources necessary to get most customers’ credit approved on the spot. The Fred Beans Family of Dealerships has $10 million in lending power, the result of over 50 years of strong relationships with the area’s leading lenders. This means that customers with a less-than-perfect credit history can have their credit approved and drive home a quality pre-owned car, truck, or SUV by lunchtime on Saturday. Even if a customer’s credit report shows a bankruptcy, divorce, tax lien, slow payment history, missed payment, or repossession or if a customer is a first-time buyer, Fred Beans may get them approved. This special ONE DAY ONLY sale will be held at all 8 Fred Beans Doylestown locations this Saturday, March 25th at 9:00AM.

Pre-owned vehicles will be sold for as low as $999.* Customers are encouraged to arrive and register by 8:15AM for the start of inspection. Incredible sale prices, starting as low as $999,* will be posted no later than 8:00AM. All vehicles will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. The Fred Beans Family of Dealerships is expecting a high volume of customers for this sale, so be sure to reserve your spot early. Customers wishing to trade in a vehicle are asked to bring their title or payment book for immediate delivery. Fred Beans will even pay off your trade-in in full, no matter how much you still owe on it.** Most of these surplus pre-owned vehicles will get sent directly to auto auctions for liquidation. So if anyone has been thinking about purchasing a good, clean, dependable pre-owned car, truck, van, or sport utility vehicle, don’t miss this special ONE DAY ONLY sale. Courtesy transportation is available from all local airports, train stations, and bus depots. THE FUN STARTS HERE Jake Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Ferguson play astronauts on the International Space Station trying not to get killed by a rampaging alien. ALEX BAILEY

Jake Gyllenhaal is lost in space The star talks about his alien thriller, “Life, and how acting isn’t that hard. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Jake Gyllenhaal is drawn to a challenge. For “Southpaw, he transformed himself into a ripped, powerful boxer. In “Everest, he tackled mountain climbing. For “Life — a sci-fi thriller/ horror film about a crew of astronauts aboard the International Space Station who discover intelligent life, then discover it wants to kill them all — the actor had to spend the entire movie in zero gravity. It was all done with wires and, besides, he doesn’t want you to think it was what you’d really call “hard work. It’s kind of weird see-

ing a movie where an international team is working together. The world seems to be moving towards isolationism right now. The idea that everybody was from a different country, that everyone represented a different culture and they all had to coexist, was one of the most important factors for me. We didn’t know what was going to happen to the world with the election when we shot it. So even though it’s a fun movie and it’s terrifying and thrilling, it’s also wonderful to see the world coexist and fight this thing together. We’re going to need more movies about that as the world falls apart. Absolutely. You also have to spend most of the movie in zero gravity, which looks tricky. I mean, people are

Blinding you with science Last month NASA located seven not previously discovered planets not terribly far away from our solar system. Did “Life make you even more excited by that news? I’ve always been interested in news like that. I think we all are. And that’s pretty extraordinary news. I don’t think it had anything to do with being involved with this or not. I did feel, probably falsely, that I knew a little bit more about it than I did before. But in truth, I most likely don’t. [Laughs]

always surprised when an actor can walk and act at the same time, or chew gum and act at the same time. It is odd hanging on wires and trying to have a sort of emotional scene. Every project offers up its own interesting conundrums. Hanging and acting was definitely one of them. Sometimes I think moviegoers and journalists are too shocked by technical diďŹƒculties like that. Maybe it’s not that hard. I think the word “hardâ€?

is used a lot in terms of preparation for a movie. I don’t believe that word should be used with anything having to do with filmmaking. There are trying times and things that make it difficult. But compared to so many other things going on in

wknd the world that are hard and difficult, it’s not the right word to use. This has an alien that turns out to be bellig-

erent. They often are in movies, although it’s always great when ďŹ lms depict nice, kind or at least benign aliens. Perhaps if we responded more like Elliott did in “E.T.â€? — maybe we wouldn’t have gotten into this situation. [Laughs] “Donnie Darkoâ€? is about to be reissued in theaters. When was the last time you watched that? A while ago. [Chuckles] But people ask me about it often. It’s still in my life. I still deal with it — not deal with it, that’s the wrong word. [Laughs] But I still answer questions about it to this day. That’s really a testament to the film. It’s lasted.

16 WKND “Saban’s Power Rangers”

ALEX BAILEY

“Life” It features Ryan Reynolds and two of the writers of “Deadpool,” but don’t worry: “Life” is a straight-up, no-joke monster-in-space movie, not a self-impressed send-up. It’s a high-end “Alien” knockoff, so polished and attractively cast that you might sometimes forget it has almost the same plot: A team of astronauts get pecked-off, one-by-one, by an extraterrestrial beastie. It’s not a Gigerian freakazoid this time but a shape-shifter; at various points it looks like a turtle and eventually a squid floating after its prey for some inventive, R-rated kills. It’s here that we offer what may sound like a strange theory: Originality isn’t always important. Sometimes it’s just as worthwhile to be familiar, even derivative. “Life” arrives months ahead of “Alien: Covenant,” which has the unenviable task of bridging one prequel (“Prometheus”) with a

classic (“Alien”), while clearing space for four more sequels. Classy budget and first-rate effects aside, “Life” is content to be a modest trifle. There are only six actors (including Reynolds as well as Jake Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Ferguson) and a simple mission: When the intelligent life they’ve found wants them dead, they must survive. It’s sad that the bar for movies is so low now that “may not have a sequel” feels like something special. You really watch “Life” just to see if it ever screws up. It does get sloppy toward the end, but on the whole it’s cool and confidently made, most of it comprised of one problem-solving activity after another. In two years you’ll confuse “Life” with such fellow “Alien” rip-offs as “Galaxy of Terror” and “Creature,” but while it’s in front, of you it’s lean and mean. MP

One minute you’re gobbling up awards for playing LBJ on Broadway; the next you’re bringing unneeded gravitas to words like “Zordon” and “Zeo Crystal.” It’s not clear why Bryan Cranston is in the awkwardly named “Saban’s Power Rangers,” a blockbusterification of a two-decades-old kiddie trash show. The acting god only appears in the flesh for about 30 seconds, then spends the rest of it as a big hologram thing on a cave wall, looking like he’s pressing his face onto one of those pin art impression boards you get at Spencer’s. Yet even with all the Cranston, “Power Rangers” is not quite a gritty reboot, but also not quite sure what it is instead. It’s a mash-up of approaches that don’t

go together. Our diverse quintet of high schoolers find an imprisoned magical being (Cranston) and his goofy talking robot (voice of Bill Hader). They instruct them that they can turn (or “morph”) into a gaggle of loudly colored, spandexwearing, high-kicking, dino-botriding defenders of Earth. Still, it’s hard to take even semiseriously a pricey romp where the villain is named Rita Repulsa. Played by Elizabeth Banks, she’s some kind of alien witch who wants to destroy the planet for some reason. She’s a hoot, but she’s in a different movie than the Rangers. Each one is a YA brooder, while Cranston seems to think he’s doing Shakespeare. By the time Repulsa is leveling a dead-end small town, you won’t know what kind of film you’re watching, or why it contains no less than Walter White. MP

“Personal Shopper”

making contact with his spirit. Instead, she seems to awaken a malevolent one, who vomits ectoplasm on her face and, over a thrilling and witty 20-minute stretch, trolls her over text messages. “Personal Shopper” is being sold like the latest dumb horror movie. But it’s only a genre movie part time. It’s also a character study, a portrait of grief, even a kind of documentary about Kristen Stewart. Half the running ime is devoted to Maureen’s main gig: picking up (and eventually trying on) high-end frocks for a moneyed client. We see Stewart riding around on her Peugot, navigating train stations and hanging in fancy shops, ignored by fans and hungry paparazzi. Movies project our greatest desires, and in “Personal Shopper” one of the world’s biggest megastars is allowed to be a nobody. MP

If nothing else — and it has much else to recommend — “Personal Shopper” may be the ideal Kristen Stewart movie. That’s not to say it’s the best, but it is the one that most understands what makes her unique. When we talk about actors (and do it badly more often than not), we talk about how they recited their lines, how they were so emotional or, the other extreme, so subtle. Stewart isn’t one of those actors. She’s at her finest when she’s just being. Reuniting with her “Clouds of Sils Maria” director, Olivier Assayas, Stewart plays Maureen, an ex-pat who’s arrived in Paris in the wake of her twin brother’s death. He was a medium, and she’s trying to be one, too, in the hopes of

“T2 Trainspotting

VAN REDIN, BROAD GREEN PICTURES

“Song to Songâ€? Reports of Terrence Malick’s irrelevance have been greatly exaggerated. It’s a tragedy that the moment the ďŹ lmmaker went from reclusive to unexpectedly proliďŹ c, critics would turn on him and audiences would forget he exists. It’s certainly easy to snicker at Malick’s recent ďŹ lms — at the whispered poetic narration, at the name actors twirling or running, at the fact that they’re so gosh-darned earnest. But the ďŹ lms are deceptively simple, in their busy ways. Malick’s latest whirligig contraption is a love story — a tale of a breakup and reconnection between Austin musicians played by Rooney Mara and Ryan Gosling, but you might not realize that until it’s almost over. As in “To the Wonderâ€? and “Knight of Cups,â€? the ďŹ lm jumps around so much you never know where you are. This all may seem like the same old Malick song. But what he’s been doing with his last three ďŹ lms is akin to a painter working on the same basic theme with minor variations. While “Knight of Cupsâ€? used fast cuts to show that modern life, with its internet-trained dopamine rushes, is rubbish, the quickie shots in “Song to Songâ€? capture the unbalanced nature of love. These ďŹ lms move fast because they’re capturing characters who seek moments of transcendence that always prove eeting. “Song to Songâ€? closes on an up note, but the real joy comes from seeing that Malick’s still got it. MP

Center for Weight and Eating Disorders

No, the annoyingly titled “T2 Trainspottingâ€? isn’t as terriďŹ c as the 21-year-old ďŹ rst. But it is killer as a movie about aging. The ďŹ rst ďŹ lm teemed with youthful vitality. The second is a slower, longer, gloomier (though still darkly funny) aair. Three of the four have given up smack, but not much else has changed. The 40-something Renton, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie remain ne’er-do-wells, deviants, reprobates. If they’re not slaves to skag, they’re still slaves to their awful natures. The plot revolves around Ewan McGregor’s Renton coming back to Edinburgh, two decades after nicking a drug-deal haul from his closest mates. He falls right back into old habits, all while Robert Carlyle’s Begbie, imprisoned since Renton’s swindle, breaks out and can’t wait to gut his old frenemy. Apart from a bit where Renton and Jonny Lee Miller’s Sick Boy eece a hall of Catholic-hating bigots, the exploits aren’t as madcap or freewheeling as they once were. The pacing lurches; it often lowses steam. But what would you expect from a ďŹ lm about middle-agers? This isn’t the cinematic equivalent of a band of AARP members plodding through hits they had in the ’60s. It’s a movie about how getting older sucks. MP

big, nice boobs, it’s when I’m breastfeeding — why not use ’em while you got ’em?!’” Bickering aside, the “Frozen” star says she loved being on set with Shepard. She credits their strong relationship to couples therapy, which she says helped them work through some big issues. “We disagree on almost everything, and to make that work you just have to learn how to communicate effectively,” she explains. Bell is outspoken about her own struggles with anxiety and depression — and fighting the stigma around mentalhealth issues. “No good comes from anything when it’s left in the dark. Seeking treatment is something that should be celebrated, not shamed,” she explains. In addition to therapy, the L.A. resident has daily strategies to keep herself in balance, from meditating when she needs a break — “My anxiety is always boosted by multitasking,” she says, (Kristen, same) — to work-

She loves to take long walks with her dog or go on a nearby hike, and is just getting into yoga, which she says she finds “very calming.” For Bell, an eco-conscious lifestyle goes hand in hand with healthy choices. Bell partnered with Tide purclean, a new 65 percent plant-based detergent, to introduce its new clean-energy campaign. The brand encourages folks to take the #CleanPledge — vowing to adopt energy-saving methods and sharing the hashtag on social media — with $5 donated from every pledge to the World Wildlife Fund. “As a mom I obviously need clean clothes, but I also care a lot about the environment I’m leaving my children,” explains Bell, who has two daughters under 3. “The challenge is to get more households to be environmentally conscious when they’re doing their laundry.” Bell is a firm believer that acts of service alleviate anxiety. “You can receive self-esteem by doing esteemable acts — so helping anyone around you, or helping conserve the environment, will make you feel better,” she says. “It’s basic math.”

David Dye says goodbye to ‘World Cafe’ After 26 years, host embarks on a new adventure with “Dave’s World. A.D. AMOROSI @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

When David Dye founded and became the full-time host of “World Cafe at WXPN-FM (88.5) in 1991, his mix of deep cuts, deeper research and in-depth conversation with artists for twohours daily charmed the pants off lovers of the terrestrial-radio world. Twenty-six years later, he’s moving away from the daily grind, handing over “World Cafe to new host Talia Schlanger and contributing when he feels like it. Mostly though, he’ll be focusing on his newest WXPN program, “Dave’s World. Starting April 2, this hourlong show will offer Dye a chance to chat and play songs that he loves. How many days until you head into the sunset of “World Cafe? Are you trying to ask how many lame-duck days I have? I’ll tell you.

Find out David’s first impression of his successor at metro.us I’m making March 31 the last day. Is the last set list picked out? Yeah, yeah, yeah. We’re working with Talia, and I’ve done lots of things together with her already on-air. The last show though will feature an hour of highlights from the “World Cafe anniversary concerts we did two weeks ago. The second hour of the show features Talia interviewing me about the show. That’s very meta. It’s cool, especially because we go back to WXPN’s old building at 3905 Spruce — reminisce about the old staircase, the rampant squirrels — then head to the new studio and talk about happy moments, weird moments, who

Are daily fantasy sports ready to experience second boom period? FanDuel and DraftKings are not going anywhere anytime soon. MATTHEW BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

The daily fantasy sports industry in the United States is prepared to take a second step forward after taking a giant step backwards a year and a half ago. Just prior to the start of the 2015 NFL season, it seemed every other commercial on ESPN featured DraftKings telling you that you could win “a shipload of money” and former FanDuel winners bragging about their riches. That period - August through October of 2015 - was the peak period in the history of daily fantasy. But just as fast as daily fantasy’s rise in prominence came it’s abrupt fall. The backlash from the usual anti-gambling crowd, traditional sports gambling community, politicians and people who were just plain jealous of the two companies’ meteoric climb was insanely intense. “It was very precarious as to whether [DraftKings and FanDuel] would even survive,” explained Daniel Barbarisi, author of the new book Dueling with Kings. “They were on top of the world and then came under heavy fire.”

Righting wrongs DraftKings and FanDuel agreed to merge this past November and the deal is currently being reviewed by the Federal Trade Commission. After the backlash and legal battles, the two companies have made considerable changes to the way they operate. “Players can enter multiple lineups in a single tournament [now],” Barbarisi told Metro. “It used to be that you could enter a ton of lineups - many, many, many - which gave a big advantage to the big-

Fantasy sports, in its many forms, have become synonymous with the NFL season.

“They almost fell apart, but then they actually managed to survive because they pulled off a series of legislative victories at state houses around the country.” Daniel Barbarisi

gest players. Over time they’ve cut down on the number of lineups you can use. So they’ve really reduced multi-entry, and they’ve put multi-entry limits and caps on their games - which I think makes an enormous difference to level the playing field. “They’ve also done things like banning certain computer scripts that give certain players an edge in manipulating certain things on the websites themselves - like quicker lineup changes. That’s a big advantage if you can build

that certain computer script yourself. That kind of stuff has also gone away. “There are other limits on things like who can take certain numbers of head-to-head match ups at different dollar values. They also introduced more casual games. They’ve basically just made a lot of attempts to even the playing field in favor of the small-time player as opposed to the really dominant pro who used to own the world. I think those have actually been really, really good changes.”

GETTY IMAGES

Quit your day job? Barbarisi was once the New York Yankees beat writer for The Wall Street Journal, but left the sports journalism world in favor of becoming a daily fantasy pro. There were plenty of days, particularly early on after his change in careers, when he doubted his decision. “I was a big loser for a long time,” Barbarisi told Metro. “That was emotionally very difficult. Financially, it was very difficult. My wife would come home and would find out that I’d lost again and it was like, ‘I just quit my job to do this?’ That was not the easiest thing.” Barbarisi eventually figured it out, but he didn’t win big playing daily fantasy baseball like he thought he would. In fact, Barbarisi said he “sucked” at baseball despite being around the game for years. “I thought I was going

to be a baseball expert but I was really, really bad at it,” Barbarisi told Metro. “Baseball is probably the hardest because it lends itself to domination by the pros the easiest. Basketball too. “Football is still actually one of the easiest sports [to play daily fantasy] in terms of the variance of its outcomes. That almost makes it a fairer sport. Hockey has a lot of those same factors to it. “Soccer is the hardest to win, I think, because the game itself is a little big more esoteric and there are not many stats available as there are for American games. So the few pros who really understand how to systemize that can become extremely good at it.”

The Trump effect It’s hard to believe the Trump administration would attempt to crack down on daily fantasy

sports and sports gambling in general given the president’s history in the casino business. Even before Trump was elected, though, Barbarisi believe there was a collective shift in thinking from the general American public when it came to betting on sports. “Generally, the current trend in the way America is going is good for all these industries,” Barbarisi said. “You’re seeing the American sports leagues - they’ve already embraced daily fantasy. They’re already starting to soften their anger towards what you’d consider to be traditional sports gambling, too. I think we’re moving in a direction where daily fantasy is sort of a gateway drug to sports gambling. It’s something that’s kind of softening things up, and I believe you’re going to see legalized sports gambling in the U.S. within the next decade.

Sweet 16 Friday preview: UCLA and Kentucky set for mega-showdown The Madness continues with must-see TV Friday night. RICH SLATE @RichSlate

sports@metro.us

Friday, at least on paper, features the sexier matchups in the Sweet 16 — highlighted by the dream meeting of No. 2 Kentucky (31-5) vs. No. 3 UCLA (31-4) in Memphis (9:39 p.m., CBS). The Sweet 16 seems like it is way too early to have these national title contenders squaring off, but you can’t complain. Regardless of who loses, you can guarantee that many future NBA players will compete in their final collegiate game in that one. Freshman shooting guard Malik Monk was the SEC Player of the Year so he’s due to break

out for the Wildcats after quiet performances vs. Northern Kentucky (12 points) and Wichita State (14 points). Bruins senior shooting guard Bryce Alford plays for his father Steve and he’s one of the best shooters in the country. Alford had 16 points in UCLA’s 79-67 win over Cincinnati in the second round. Another Friday game features everyone’s favorite underdog No. 4 Butler (25-8) vs. No. 1 North Carolina (29-7) in Memphis (7:09 p.m., CBS) in the South region. College hoops will also take over Madison Square Garden this weekend as No. 3 Baylor (27-7) opposes No. 7 South Carolina (24-10) at 7:39 p.m. (TBS) followed by No. 4 Florida (26-8) vs. No. 8 Wisconsin (27-9) in the East region. The Bears are known for their early round ex-

its but they staved off USC, 82-78, in the second round. The Gamecocks had never reached a Sweet 16 in program history before now and how they did it no doubt gained them many additional fans. They eliminated Duke, 88-81, in a second round thriller in Greenville, South Carolina. Baylor junior power forward Johnathan Motley has put up double-doubles in both tournament games this season: 19 points and 10 rebounds vs. USC and 15 points and 10 rebounds vs. New Mexico State (both in under 30 minutes of action). Perhaps nobody has been better in the first two games than South Carolina point guard Sindarius Thornwell, who posted 29 points and 11 rebounds in a first round win over Marquette. That was followed by 24 points,

six rebounds and five assists in the game of his life against Duke. It feels weird to say since they’ve both become such brand name schools, but not many expected No. 4 Florida (26-8) or No. 8 Wisconsin (27-9) to still be here. The Gators were thought to be overrated from a down SEC, yet they remain alive along with two other teams from their conference (Kentucky and South Carolina). Meanwhile, you should

never underestimate the Badgers in March as they dispatched No. 1 overall seed Villanova last weekend, 65-62, in the second round. The over/under for that contest is 131.5 points so don’t expect too many easy buckets or pretty basketball. Eagles shouldn’t be shy to draft defensive players With offense the focus, the Birds must not ignore needs on both sides of the ball in April. LUKE MILLER @LukeFM7

The Eagles should look long and hard at improving their defensive line and linebacking corps.

The Eagles have clearly made it a priority to improve their offense and to give Carson Wentz a plethora of reliable weapons. However, they’ve lost some key defensive cogs this offseason in guys like Bennie Logan and Connor Barwin. Beau Allen has gone from nice depth to a time-to-prove-it starter, and last year’s undrafted free agents have become the depth at defensive tackle. Mychal Kendricks saw limited time last season and has been brought up in endless trade rumors, but if he leaves, who is replacing him for the Eagles? Jordan Hicks and Nigel Bradham are set, but beyond that this position is murky. Free agency’s opening frenzy has passed without any splashes, so it seems if depth is coming, it must be through the draft. If you’re looking for a lot more than just depth, the Eagles just hosted a predraft visit for Alabama’s Reuben Foster, the latest in a long line of Crimson Tide charttoppers. Foster won the Butkus Award (best linebacker), SEC Championship Game MVP and was named First-Team AllAmerican in 2016. He entered the combine as the best interior linebacker prospect in the draft, but left early after a bizarre situation involving an exchange with a hospital worker there. That incident, along with the fact that it caused no drills to be completed by Foster, might slide him into the Eagles’ range at 14, and certainly explain the team wanting to bring

him in and ask him about what happened. If the team thinks he can play weak-side linebacker in the NFL, he’d be an instant solution to the Kendricks situation. They’ve paid attention to other Alabama products as well (which seems prudent). Most relevant to our discussion today is another linebacker: scheme-versatile Ryan Anderson, and one of the less-mentioned Alabama D-lineman: Dalvin Tomlinson. Tomlinson didn’t make noise as a pass-rusher, but did an excellent job freeing up the others on the Crimson Tide’s line and could do the same for Curry, Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham. He didn’t have much time as a starter in college, as you may recall Alabama’s pair of highly rated defensive tackles in the 2016 draft, as well as Jonathan Allen in this years. Anderson only completed the 40 at the combine, and didn’t light it on fire (4.78 seconds). But the Eagles have already brought him in for a visit. Evaluating Alabama talent is always difficult because it’s impossible to know how the players will perform when they are no longer surround-

How to volunteer at the NFL draft The NFL draft will make its return to Philadelphia from April 27-29, and with up to 200,000 football fans expected to ock to the Ben Franklin Parkway for the event itself and for the expansive NFL Experience, the city needs help. The draft needs volunteers over the age of 18 to work at least two shifts of ďŹ ve or six hours during the NFL draft — which starts that Thursday night and lasts until midday Saturday. The actual draft will take place in a custom built theater just at the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s landing with the rest of the street closed o for casual fans to come celebrate football. The NFL says it needs

ed by superior talent. So if you’d prefer to look elsewhere for your defensive players, check out LSU’s Kendell Beckwith, who has slipped down draft boards after tearing his ACL before his bowl game. Beckwith recovered enough to perform 20 reps in the bench press at the combine where the Eagles interviewed him. The injury won’t help his ability to play the outside and cover backs and tight ends, but at 6-foot-2, 243 pounds, he could provide some depth behind Jordan Hicks and may be available later than he otherwise would have. Another player coming off injury worth taking a late-round gamble on: UCLA’s Eddie Vanderdoes. Vanderdoes missed all but the first game of 2015 after tearing his ACL. He did start every game in 2016, but his production dipped and concerns about his weight persisted. He may have allayed those at the combine, weighing in at 305 pounds and running a 4.99 40-yard. If he regains the promise that saw him become an honorable mention AllPac-12 Team as a freshman and sophomore, he could be a late steal.

“Draft Ambassadors, Field Goal Kick, Fan Bag Distribution, VIP Hospitality Greeters, WayďŹ nding, Volunteer Check-In, Sponsor Activations, Virtual Reality, Play Football Activations, Vertical Jump, 40-Yard Dash, Locker Rooms, Vince Lombardi Trophy, Super Bowl Rings Display, AFC/ NFC Locker Rooms and much, much more! Volunteers will be assigned a speciďŹ c position and provided with training upon arrival on-site. We appreciate your understanding and exibility.â€? Volunteers will receive a short basic training at Lincoln Financial Field on Tuesday, April 25, and will get an NFL shirt and jacket. They will be asked to wear khakis and sneakers when working.
