UK PRIME MINISTER TRIGGERS BREXIT

1

Prime Minister Theresa May formally began Britain’s divorce from the European Union on Wednesday, declaring there was no turning back and ushering in a tortuous exit process that will test the bloc’s cohesion and pitch her country into the unknown. In one of the most significant steps by a British leader since World War II, May notified EU Council President Donald Tusk in a hand-delivered

letter that Britain would quit the club it joined in 1973. “The United Kingdom is leaving the European Union,” May told parliament nine months after Britain shocked investors and world leaders by unexpectedly voting to quit the bloc. “This is an historic moment from which there can be no turning back.” REUTERS

IVANKA BECOMES UNPAID CAR TRIES TO MOW DOWN WHITE HOUSE EMPLOYEE OFFICERS NEAR CAPITOL

Ivanka Trump said she would work in the White House in an unpaid, informal advisory role to the president as she sought to allay ethics concerns about working there. “I have heard the concerns some have with my advising the president in my personal capacity while voluntarily complying with all ethics rules and I will instead serve as an unpaid employee in the White House office, subject

to all of the same rules as other federal employees,” she said in a statement. Questions about possible conflicts of interest arose after it was announced on March 20 that Trump, 35, would become an informal adviser to her father, President Donald Trump, with an office in the West Wing. She has been an increasingly influential adviser to the president and her husband, Jared Kushner, is a powerful Trump adviser. REUTERS

A woman was arrested near the U.S. Capitol in Washington after police said she drove erratically, crashed into another vehicle and tried to run over officers on Wednesday. No one was hurt during the morning commotion, during which police fired shots, and the incident did not appear related to terrorism, Capitol Police spokeswoman Eva Malecki told reporters. “Although pre-

liminary, this incident appears criminal in nature with no nexus to terrorism,” Malecki said at a news conference. REUTERS

150 MIGRANTS FEARED DEAD AFTER BOAT SINKS

5

A rubber boat packed with migrants sank in the Mediterranean and the presumed sole survivor — a 16-yearold Gambian boy — told rescuers he believed all other passengers drowned, the International Migration Organization said. A humanitarian vessel, the Iuventa, found the boy hanging onto a fuel tank in the sea on Tuesday. He was transferred first to an Italian Coast Guard ship, then to

a Spanish frigate and brought to the Sicilian island of Lampedusa early on Wednesday. “He said that everyone else died. But there’s some hope that the Italian Coast Guard picked up others,” said IOM spokesman Flavio Di Giacomo in Rome, after speaking to staff in Lampedusa. It should become clear on Thursday whether others survived, as a Coast Guard vessel disembarks migrants in eastern Sicily that day, he said. REUTERS

Closing two transitional housing programs that help homeless people with substance abuse problems sentences them to a state of “flux, City Councilor Tito Jackson said Wednesday in calling for a hearing on the matter. The city announced last week that Project SOAR and Safe Harbor, two transitional housing programs located at the 112 Southampton Street city homeless shelter, would shut down because of funding cuts at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Project SOAR, which stands for Stability, Opportunity, Achievement and Recovery, provides 20 beds for homeless adults in transition while they work on their sobriety. Safe Harbor also has 20 beds and serves former addicts who are HIVpositive. These programs primarily serve men; 77 percent of opioid-related deaths last year were men, according to The Boston Globe. Both programs were previously housed at the Long Island Shelter, which closed abruptly in October 2014 when the bridge to the shelter was deemed unsafe. They were relocated to the Southampton shelter, which the city created in January 2015. “Although Project SOAR and Safe Harbor have been impacted by

this shift in federal funding, it is important to note that no shelter beds have been lost, Marjorie Nesin, a spokeswoman for the Boston Public Health Commission, which runs the programs, said in a statement. “There are currently the same number of beds at the Southampton Street shelter as there were before. Jackson disagrees. “I just want to be clear that this is a loss of 40 beds, Jackson said at Wednesday’s city council meeting. “Yes, the city is saying that they’re repurposing these beds for emergency shelters, but the Southampton shelter had the only dedicated recovery services in Boston that accommodated HIVpositive patients. There are more than 300 homeless residents in Boston who are HIV-positive, Jackson said. With the programs ending and the beds turning into emergency shelter beds, they will serve homeless residents who come in on a day-by-day basis, which Jackson said isn’t as supportive as other services. He also criticized the sudden change. “The administration knew for two years that funds would be cut. It should not have happened abruptly. There’s no surprise here, and what does it do to the individual being supported? he said. “It puts the most vulnerable individuals in our city into flux. Sheila Dillon, Boston’s chief of housing and director of neighborhood development, confirmed to WBUR that the city has known for at least two years that HUD funding — which provided about $800,000 per year for both programs — would end. For more information about the HUD funding cuts, visit Metro.us.

An MIT-led research project has developed a system that would better protect a web user’s anonymity, but would likely come with a fee. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

kristin.toussaint@metro.us

As government chisels away at internet privacy protections, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University have developed a system they say will give you more anonymity in cyberspace. The catch: You’ll probably have to pay for it. To start with, it’s important to remember that every single thing you type online gets stored as data, no matter what kind of web protection software you own. Sites like Google, Yelp, Kayak and others translate each request as a query, which gets stored in a database center. With that in mind, the MIT-led research group

has developed Splinter, a system that cuts the cord on that data flow without having to mask or delete the actual information. Splinter allows websites to encrypt a user’s internet searches so they’re never saved. The data is still out there, but is split among multiple database centers. That scrambles the search information a person has entered, preventing the websites from gathering information about the person who made the request. “Data is floating around everywhere, so if you have anything on the internet, anyone can learn about it at some point. That’s scary,” said Frank Wang, an MIT graduate student who helped develop Splinter. “Your internet service provider is learning about you, so [we said], ‘How can we leak the least amount of information?’” Now, about that catch: Instead of relying on internet service providers to look out for your privacy, Splinter puts the power of protection into the hands of web services. The consumer cannot install the software. It’s a system each company would

have to incorporate into their own site. Because consumers are demanding more privacy in their web browsing, they may be willing to pay for the privilege. And companies may be willing to satisfy that demand. With Splinter, services could charge a nominal fee for queries, like, maybe $5 a month. Wang said

using Splinter costs a web service less than 2 cents per search. “Web services could say, ‘Hey, I charge you to [search for a flight], but I won’t release any of that information or use your data,” Wang said. David O’Brien, a senior researcher at Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society, said

the concept could open a window. “It’s been discussed for years now and could be one alternative path, he said. The problem, though, is that payment for privacy “hasn’t been supported by demand and maybe won’t ever be. But more people are demanding privacy, espe-

The best way to protect yourself is to practice abstinence, virtually, said David O’Brien of Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society . “Unfortunately, the simplest answer is don’t use online services,â€? O’Brien said. “For most people, that doesn’t really y. Short of that, a lot of services you can use obscure your identity online.â€? Aside from that, O’Brien and MIT researcher Frank Wang suggested using Tor, a system that links your internet connection to multiple servers, placed all around the country or

cially in the wake of both the U.S. House and Senate voting to repeal internet privacy protections adopted by the Federal Communications Commission during the Obama administration. That means that internet service providers like Comcast and AT&T would be able to share or sell information from a web user without that

7

even the world. This means that when you go to a website like Google, it looks, to that website, “as if you’re coming from multiple dierent countries with each query you send.â€? Another service, DuckDuckGo, is a search engine that promises not to track your queries. Your computer or smart device’s “Incognitoâ€? mode can be used in conjunction with these programs to provide a bit more privacy. It protects against targeted advertisements, but doesn’t prevent companies from obtaining important data about the searches themselves. In the end, O’Brien said, true privacy may be a dream. “It’s hard to be truly anonymous on the internet. It might even be impossible.â€?

user’s permission. Now more than ever, Wang said, “users are starting to care more about privacy, and the government is not regulating it as much as [people] wanted them too. So there’s an opportunity for web services to differentiate themselves and say, ‘We have a private offering.’

Alicia Keys isn’t exactly ‘makeup-free’ Earlier this week, Adam Levine called out Alicia Keys for wearing makeup. Let’s talk about it. Levine, the secondthirstiest man alive, told Howard Stern that he spotted Keys putting on a bit of makeup, and said aloud, “Oh, I thought Alicia doesn’t wear makeup. Keys shot back, saying “I do what the f—k I want,” which yeah, duh. Levine’s decision to call out Keys on wearing makeup is probably just rooted in some good old-fashioned male entitlement. We’re talking about a guy who is basically a flesh-colored helium balloon made human, so him making a whole thing of this is not at all surprising. But! Alicia Keys — who absolutely has the right to do whatever

she wants — does wear makeup. Despite being very vocal about her decision to go #nomakeup, it turns out her look isn’t so much makeup free as it is a “no-makeup look.” Her makeup artist has admitted to as much, saying “Compared to the world of makeup, there is minimal [coverage].” Which is totally fine! But the two are not the same, so there’s that. Despite maybe misleading us about the makeup issue, the songstress does take her natural, uh, “look” very seriously: She’s gone so far as to eliminate cheese from her diet in pursuit of glowing skin and a makeup-free existence. And frankly, that’s just a sacrifice the rest of us can’t afford to make.

Emma Thompson, feminist queen and forever Professor Trelawney in my heart, is taking on bodyshaming. The 57-year-old actress appeared on Swedish talk show, “Skavlan,” and not so fondly recalled a time when her co-star was criticized for her weight. “There was a wonderful

actress in a film I did called ‘Brideshead Revisited.’ The producer said to her, ‘Will you lose some weight?’ And she was absolutely exquisite!” She threatened to quit the film if the producer brought it up again. Get it, girl. Dear Dumbledore: May we be graced with Emma Thompson’s presence forever and ever, amen.

Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofsky are still a thing Things are heating up between Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofsky, because age really is just a number, you guys. A source tells People that nothing can keep this couple down: not an age difference, not long distance and not an anonymous source tipping off a magazine about their romance. Wonderful! “They are very sweet together and seem happy. They hold hands.” Not

notable! The two have reportedly been dating since September, when Aronofsky, 48 directed Lawrence, 26, in an upcoming film called “Mother!” They seem to be keeping their relationship pretty lowprofile, but they have been spotted “on movie dates and low-key strolls,” which again — isn’t very notable. They’re just like, two chill people in love or whatever. Who also happen to be rich and famous. This kind of thing happens all the time.

sense.” In the new book, “The Poem is You,” Harvard professor Steph Burt provides a way into modern poetry for that frustrated everyperson, exploring 60 different poems. April 3, 7:30 p.m. Harvard Book Store, 1256 Mass. Ave., Cambridge Free, bit.ly/2o7tQHo MATTHEW DINARO

Aveva Singer Aveva Dese is from Ethiopia, but she got her big break in Israel on that country’s version of “The Voice.” Her style is mostly Western pop/R&B, sung in both English and her native Amharic, and songs like the smoldering “I Wanna Go” show that she knows what she’s doing, to say the least. Don’t be surprised if next Boston visit is to a much larger venue. March 31, 8 p.m. Somerville Armory, 191 Highland Ave., Somerville $20-$25, bit.ly/2nF5cNl

There’s a restaurant revolution happening in Tampa, with reliable old-school joints as well as new, edgy bistros.

taurant in the world; and in this case, bigger is also better. The 1905 Salad, Columbia’s birth year, is sublime, as is the grouper wrapped in pastry dough with asparagus and red peppers. Columbia also makes a terrific Cuban sandwich. For a new-retro experience, go back in time with a visit to Ciro’s Speakeasy and Sup-

Destination restaurants Begin with the venerable Columbia Restaurant. The downtown Ybor City staple has been a landmark on the Tampa scene for decades, combining history — its grand exterior features ornate tilework, while inside you’ll find a tranquil Spanish-style courtyard — and fine dining. At 52,000 square feet, the Columbia spans an entire city block, making it the largest Spanish res-

the effort. The staff sports Prohibition-era garb, and there’s a cool secret room behind a bookcase.

Cuban food The finest Cuban sandwich just might be served at the delightfully quirky West Tampa Sandwich Shop. The Obama Sandwich was born after the former president ordered a honey Cuban at the small but charming diner, a Cuban drizzled with honey, plus lettuce and tomatoes. You also can’t go wrong with the chorizo sandwich or the plantain omelette. Don’t miss La Segunda Central Bakery, which has been in existence for more than a century. Its chewy, delicious Cuban bread is a local treasure. The same could be said for the tasty guava turnovers and flan.

itself is a draw, a historic pumphouse that’s been repurposed into a lightfilled restaurant with huge windows overlooking a palm-strewn backyard. The only difficult decision is what to try. Do you request the pan-seared pompano, or the gouda grouper? For Mediterranean fare, Haven won’t disappoint. Try the octopus carpaccio or the Wahoo ala Plancha (it’s escargot,

live a little!).

Cheers Cigar City Brewing is not just a beer lover’s destination. True beer geeks can take a behind-thescenes tour of the brewery and see its equipment up close. If you like sours, you won’t go wrong with the Guava Passion Berliner at the Coppertail Brewing Company, but don’t skip the French Oak Black Cherry Porter.

The luxe Aloft Downtown Tampa offers libations at its modern cocktail lounge W XYZ. Relax by the infinity pool overlooking the scenic Hillsborough River and a view of Moorish minarets while a DJ spins during weekends. Rooftop bars are all the rage too. BOMANI VS. BOSTON B

BU

RKE

Bomani Jones is on that ESPN show with Dan Le Batard and his dad called “Highly Questionable,” a show which has highly questionable TV ratings even given its dreaded 4:30 p.m. weekday slot. Jones has been making his social media bones recently by labeling Boston a racist city on Twitter, something

RAIDERS-THEMED BROTHEL With the news that the Raiders are moving to Las Vegas comes a story that Nevada businessman Dennis Hof is going to open a Raidersthemed brothel. It will be called “Pirate’s Booty.” Genius. “I’ve had a license for a seventh brothel near Las Vegas for some time now, but I was waiting for the right

time to launch another house of debauchery,” Hof told the Las Vegas Sun. “The Raiders coming to Vegas will mean big business for me, so my next sex den will honor the ‘Men in Black’ and their ‘Raider Nation.’” As a teenager, I had three posters in my room — one of Jenny McCarthy, one

he has zero personal proof of and something he bases upon stories from nearly 50 years ago. So, let’s play Bomani’s game and paint with an absurdly broad brush and just say Boston is indeed a “racist city.” Just wondering — at what point does an entire city stop being racist? Is there a certain time period with zero raciallycharged incidents that has to lapse? Also, should New York be labeled a racist

city because of what happened to Eric Garner three years ago? Should LA be labeled a racist city because of what took place in 1992? Should Philly be labeled a racist city because they cheered Michael Irvin’s careerending injury?

of Nomar Garciaparra, and one of the Oakland Raiderettes (the team’s cheerleaders), so this is exciting. It’s easy to imagine most of the girls at this fun house dressed like Raiderettes initially, though the kinky types will probably want their 20-minute dates to look like Al Davis or Lyle Alzado.

SOX SIDELINE DRAMA TED WILLIAMS’ HEAD SPEAKS This past Sunday, “Family Guy” aired an episode where Peter and Lois played baseball at Fenway Park — which was hosting a “Red Sox fantasy baseball camp.” It was very surprising that the typically conservative and ultra-PR conscious Sox allowed this to

happen as there were several scenes which featured Ted Williams’ severed head — which, of course, was talking to people in an enclosed jar. “There’s a special place in hell for whoever’s responsible for me ending up like this,” Williams’ head

told a cartoon version of Pedro Martinez. Then in a prison cell, a lustful prisoner tells his cellmate — Ted Williams’ severed head — that, “we’re going to get along just fine.” Teddy Ballgame’s severed head replies, “This is the No. 1 fear of only being a head.”

The rumor mill surrounding the relationship between female Red Sox TV reporters and players/coaches has been churning out of control for well over a decade — dating back to the Hazel Mae days. Here are the facts —former NESN reporter Jenny Dell and Will Middlebrooks wound up getting married, and former CSNNE reporter Jessica Moran

is currently dating John Farrell. Today, Dell is working for CBS, Middlebrooks is a minor leaguer with the Texas Rangers, Moran is looking for work, and Farrell is your 2017 Boston Red Sox manager. For about two hours a few years back, the Sox seemed serious about doing away with hiring former beauty pageant winners altogether, as they

replaced Dell with a male reporter — Gary Striewski.. This past February, NESN canned Striewski. Guerin Austin (above) is back for 2017 (Sox players kept dumping celebratory Gatorade on her last year) and NESN hired bombshell Kacie McDonnell (who has dated MLB player Eric Hosmer and NFL QB Aaron Murray) as an anchor last year.

Bruins’ fourth line stepping up The B’s host Dallas on Thursday at the Garden. RICH SLATE @Richslate

sports@metro.us

Bruins rookie forward Noel Acciari’s first NHL goal in Tuesday’s critical 4-1 win over Nashville was a nice moment at TD Garden for the Providence College product and Johnston, Rhode Island native. If you think about it a little deeper though, you quickly realize that Boston head coach Bruce Cassidy has trusted his fourth line and as a result, Acciari along with veterans Riley Nash and Dominic Moore are all producing and playing good hockey down the stretch. When the B’s were at their best under former head coach

Claude Julien, we all remember that he loved to utilize all four forward lines at his disposal (some would argue too much at times) and for that reason alone, Boston’s fourth line in the 2010-11 Stanley Cup season (Daniel Paille, Gregory Campbell and Shawn Thornton) will likely never pay for a meal or a drink in this city for the rest of their lives. Nobody will confuse fourth lines with first or second lines, who rack up most of the points and highlight reel moves, but they still play an important role on clubs that want to make the playoffs: they provide reliability giving the stars a chance to rest from time to time without worrying. They win faceoffs, skate hard, deliver hits (crushing ones in Acciari’s case) and basically execute whatev-

er the head coach’s gameplan could be on a given night against a certain opponent. “Acciari can really get in there,” noted Cassidy after Tuesday’s victory. “He’s made our fourth line better, he’s a good fit with Nash and Moore. What a great finish (for his first NHL goal), he rounded out his offensive game by going down to Providence (Bruins) and working on it.” NCAA hockey can take credit for much of the success of Boston’s current fourth line since Nash (Cornell), Moore (Harvard) and Acciari are all showing what you can learn by playing at least a few years in college before making the decision to turn pro. Nash (3 goals, 2 assists in his last 5 games) assisted on Acciari’s top-shelf one-timer

as the Bruins caught the Predators on a 3-on-1 and scored the biggest goal of the game to extend their lead to 3-1 with 4:13 left in regulation. A few minutes later, Moore (2 goals, 5 assists in his last 8 games) assisted on the empty-netter by David Backes that sealed the all-important two points for the black and gold. “It was an unbelievable pass from Nash who has

had a hot stick but I was ready for anything,” noted Acciari. “Our line has been clicking lately and I wasn’t going to change my game once I got recalled from Providence. We’re going to keep doing what we’re doing because it’s obviously working.” Cassidy hasn’t been afraid to change lines or ride certain players when the time calls for it so you couldn’t help but

notice that Boston’s sputtering third line of Frank Vatrano, Ryan Spooner and Jimmy Hayes each played under 10 minutes on Tuesday while Acciari, Moore and Nash all logged over 13 minutes of ice time. The B’s will expect the same kind of effort out of their fourth line as they host Dallas (31-34-11) on Thursday (NBC Sports, 7:30) at the Garden.

Aries A change may be required, but you should look before you leap. Not every opportunity will be as equally beneficial. Question what’s being offered.

Libra Domestic, personal and joint finances look promising, as long as you don’t go over your budget. Common sense will help you avoid stressful financial issues.

Taurus Emotions will surface, forcing you to take part in situations that concern you. Voice your opinion, but be sure to have facts to back up your allegations.

Scorpio Communication with someone you deem responsible and hard-working will help you assess your situation and come to terms with what needs to be done.

Gemini The changes you enforce now will set a standard for what’s to come. If you want to bring about greater stability, believe in the quality of your plans.

Sagittarius At networking functions, you will be tempted to make promises you may not be able to keep. Stay focused on what is and isn’t doable to avoid embarrassment.

Cancer An old partner will be your savior if you listen to the warnings being offered. Be cognizant of someone trying to benefit at your expense.

Capricorn Assess your situation and evaluate your relationships with individuals who have behaved erratically. Stay focused on obtaining greater stability in your personal life.

Leo Use your energy wisely and control your emotions in situations that can influence your reputation. Be prepared to make reasonable compromises.

Aquarius Helping others can be healing, but can also lead to you being taken for granted. Set boundaries so you don’t wind up resentful.

Virgo Get involved in functions that interest you and take part in challenges that will encourage you to work alongside like-minded individuals.

Pisces What you do for others will be appreciated and reciprocated. Compromise will help you overcome any concerns you have about what’s fair. EUGENIA LAST
