NATIONAL SECURITY AIDES PRIZED 1804 US DOLLAR TRUMP PRESSURES CHINA BEFORE XI TALKS N. KOREA POLICY REVIEW SELLS FOR $3.3 MILLION

1

President Donald Trump held out the possibility of using trade as a lever to secure Chinese cooperation against North Korea and said Washington might deal with Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs on its own if need be. The comments, in an interview published on Sunday by the Financial Times, appeared designed to pressure Chinese President

Xi Jinping ahead of his visit to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida this week. “China has great influence over North Korea. And China will either decide to help us with North Korea, or they won’t. And if they do that will be very good for China, and if they don’t it won’t be good for anyone,” Trump was quoted as saying, according to an edited transcript published by the newspaper. REUTERS

President Donald Trump’s top national security aides have completed a broad review of U.S. options aimed at countering North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, a senior U.S. official said on Sunday. The review, which was accelerated to have it done before Trump’s summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week, includes a range of economic and military measures but leans toward new

sanctions and increased pressure on Beijing to rein in its neighbor, the official said. The list of recommendations was put together by Trump’s National Security Council on his orders and was ready for his consideration, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity. It was not immediately clear if the review had reached Trump’s desk or how quickly he would decide on a course of action. REUTERS

An 1804 U.S. silver dollar sold for $3.3 million in one of a series of auctions that brought in a record total of more than $100 million for a renowned private coin collection, organizers said. The silver dollar, one of only eight of its kind, was snapped up at auction in Baltimore. It was one of more than 200 coins sold at the event. The auction series, beginning in

2015, generated a total of nearly $107 million in sales, according to Stack’s Bowers Galleries, which conducted the auctions along with Sotheby’s. The collection belonged to Dallas real estate developer Mack Pogue and his son Brent, who had collected coins since the 1970s. Coin dealers Kevin Lipton of California and John Albanese of New Jersey jointly bought the prized silver dollar. REUTERS

ARREST IN SEX ASSAULT SEEN ON FACEBOOK LIVE

Chicago authorities said they had arrested a 14-year-old boy in connection with the sexual assault of a teenage girl by multiple young men that was seen on Facebook Live in March. “Tonight, Chicago Police Department arrested the first of several juvenile offenders in the Facebook sexual assault incident,” the department’s chief spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said on Twitter. The mother of

the victim of the March assault had approached police after an unrelated news conference and shown them images of her daughter being assaulted by five or six young men. The mother said the girl’s uncle had told her about a video on Facebook Live that showed the assault. The high school freshman had gone to the store and her mother became concerned when she did not return. REUTERS

If someone robbed your house, would you drive the thief to the pawn shop? So why should Democrats help deliver Neil Gorsuch onto the Supreme Court? That seat is stolen property, too. That, when all the lesser arguments are stripped away, is the best argument Democrats have as Senate Republicans try to install the silver-haired Gorsuch as the high court’s fifth conservative justice. Doesn’t the seat belong to Merrick Garland, the eminently qualified Court of Appeals judge who was nominated by Barack Obama last March, only to be denied a vote or even a hearing by Republican leader Mitch McConnell? Given how Republicans froze out Garland, why should Democrats cooperate this time, even if Gorsuch has a nice résumé and an uncanny resemblance to an actor in one of those erectile-dysfunction ads? I wasn’t the commentator who first noticed that. But it’s true. The smooth-talking,

right-leaning jurist has the exact same twinkle and the same unthreatening tone. Now, he’s putting the moves on Senate Democrats like they’re a party of babeish 40-year-olds. Doesn’t “no” mean no anymore? There will be an important hearing today in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Republicans will tout Gorsuch’s fine credentials and advance his nomination to the Senate floor. But the Republicans still need 60 votes to overcome a Democratic filibuster. On Sunday, Sen. Joe Donnelly of Indiana became only the third Democrat to fold. That only gets the Republicans to 55. There are bareknuckle options on both sides. McConnell threatens to unleash the “nuclear option,”

if he can get 50 of his fellow Republicans to go along. “One way or another,” the Republican leader vows, Gorsuch will be confirmed this week. Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, still smarting from last year’s home invasion, is taunting his Republican counterpart: Go ahead and try! There is an answer to this so’s-your-mother back-and-forth, the kind of bipartisan deal that used to get made all the time in Washington. Give this nomination to the man who deserves it, the dissed Merrick Garland, and let Neil Gorsuch — credentials, charm and all — come back the next time a high-court seat is empty. That would be sensible and fair. Does this one really have to be settled at the pawn shop?

Brad Pitt returns to his peak form

A-Rod has a few words to say about J-Lo Alex Rodriguez has nothing but nice things to say in very short sentences about his new girlfriend, Jennifer Lopez. These words will either warm your heart or make you wonder whether or not A-Rod has an advanced grasp on the English language. According to Us Weekly, the 41-year-old broke his silence about his relationship, and it’s pretty clear he is begging for someone to buy him a thesaurus. On whether or not he and Lopez are having a good time: “It’s obvious. We’ve been having a great time. According to Entertainment Weekly, assault charges against the “American Honey actor have been dropped. LaBeouf was charged with misdemeanor assault and a harassment violation in late January after allegedly attacking a 25-year-old white supremacist during a protest against President Donald Trump. LaBeouf was given a pre-arraignment dismissal, citing

Brad Pitt is in the news again, and you won’t believe why. The actor, 53, has been going through a very dramatic divorce and custody battle with Angelina Jolie. That’s something that can really mess with your self-esteem, you know? So the “War Machine star decided to focus on himself. I imagine Pitt’s decision to look inward has been inspired by his therapist, his sculptor friend, Bon Iver and probably the guy who works at his favorite gyro stand. Pitt thought to himself: “When was I happi-

“13 Reasons Whyâ€? stars Dylan Minnette and Katherine Langford are about to blow up. LUCĂ?A HERNĂ NDEZ MWN letters@metro.us

Netflix’s new drama “13 Reasons Why, based on the young-adult novel by Jay Asher, follows Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette), a teenager who returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it. Inside he finds tapes recorded by his classmate Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford), who committed suicide two weeks earlier. On the recordings, Hannah explains the 13 reasons that led her to end her life. We spoke with the two 20-year-old rising stars about working with executive producer Selena Gomez and how they think the show will help spread awareness about adolescent-mental-health issues. The show tackles pretty heavy subject matter. What research did you do for the role? Dylan Minnette: They brought psychiatrists and consultants to the pre-production and during shooting. We also had the opportunity to talk with people who have had real life experience with these issues. That certainly helped us gain awareness. Katherine Langford: The producers were exceptional and were very accommodating. They were aware that it would be six months of filming and that we are young actors. At least for me, this is my first job! I felt like they

gave us all the necessary resources. How will the show educate viewers about teen depression and suicide? DM: From watching Hannah’s character specifically, I want [viewers] to realize that the smallest thing you do, from a random act of kindness to the slightest snub, can impact someone else’s life, for better or for worse. KL: I think it’s normal to feel isolated or under pressure during the last years of high school: You’re trying to understand who you are and what you want to do in the future, and that is a lot to process no matter how old you are. But that’s not the same thing as being depressed or suicidal. That’s where we need more education, to know when a person needs help; and not everyone who gets depressed goes down the same path as Hannah. But the truth is that too many young people do. And I think we can all agree that teen suicide is a tragedy and we as a society need to find ways to address it. What was it like working with Selena Gomez? DM: She has been really supportive of us, not only in terms of the show but also how we manage our social networks and what will happen once the series premieres. She more than anyone knows what it means to live your life in the public eye and I think she has been incredible in helping to prepare us for what comes next. Are you ready for fame? KL: I’ll know when it happens. [Laughs] DM: Ask me in the next interview.

Consistently ranked as one of the most recessionproof jobs, occupational therapy offers more than just stability. It also boasts a great starting salary (about $53,000), flexibility and overall job satisfaction. Even better, the field is rapidly growing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that occupational-therapist jobs are expected to increase 27 percent between 2014 and 2024 (much higher than average) and 30,400 positions will need to be filled in that time. We spoke to Karen Jacobs, a clinical professor of occupational therapy at Boston University and a practicing occupational therapist to find out more about the field.

What does an OT do? As a health and rehabilitation profession, the main role of an occupational therapist is to help injured, ill or disabled people of all ages — from newborns, to the elderly — regain their ability to perform everyday tasks, says Jacobs. Their exact role, however, depends on the

After assessing the patient, the OT will map out a plan to help the patients meet their goals, which can range anywhere from being able to brush their teeth or grasp a pencil, to walking steadily. Jacobs explains it as, “We focus on what we call ‘occupations’, which are these meaningful everyday activities that people do.”

Breaking into the field There are two routes to enter the profession, says Jacobs: You can train to be an occupational therapist or an occupational therapist assistant. On the assistant level,

students need to complete a two-year program that’s typically offered at variety of community colleges, and then pass the national certification exam before becoming a certified occupational therapy assistant. An occupational therapist must have a master’s degree or doctorate in occupational therapy. They must also complete two, three-month fieldwork programs, she explains, “which, depending on the program, could be after all of your course work is done, or be integrated in during your schooling.” After that, students must pass the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy exam (NBCOT), and apply for a license in the states they want to practice in.

“The whole reason we’re here is to win … I’m here to win.” Chris Sale

Chris Sale won 17 games with the White Sox last season. GETTY IMAGES

Expectations as tall as the Green Monster The Red Sox are expected to improve on last year’s 93 wins. MATT BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

David Ortiz is gone, but the Red Sox’ championship expectations remain the same. The Sox are not only the favorites to win the American League East this season, but they have the third best Las Vegas odds of winning the whole damn thing. Westgate Las Vegas Superbook has the Sox with the third best odds of winning the 2017 World Series at 10-1. The Cleveland Indians, who swept the Sox out of the playoffs last fall, have 12-1 odds, and the reigning champion Cubs have 3-1 odds. It’s hard to imagine this loaded Red Sox roster not being able to

at least win the division, but there do remain some big question marks — starting with the obvious. Who will be able to replace David Ortiz’s production in the heart of the Boston order? It won’t be one man, of course, but the Red Sox’ heart of the order committee looks promising. Andrew Benintendi (.295 BA, 2 HR, 14 RBI in 2016), Mookie Betts (.318, 31 HR, 113 RBI), Hanley Ramirez (.286, 30 HR, 111 RBI) and Xander Bogaerts (.294, 21 HR, 89 RBI) will all need to at least put up similar numbers that they put up last season — when the Sox scored the most runs in the majors. Benintendi’s sample size is small for sure, as he only played in 34 games last season. But the 22-year-old is a favorite to win AL Rookie of the Year and he hit .344 with a .423 OBP in spring training. “He’s extremely

poised,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said of Benintendi. “I think everyone is looking forward to one, if not many years of a very good player that’s been on a rapid ascent into the big leagues and has handled everything in stride.” Near the bottom of the Red Sox order is third baseman Pablo Sandoval, who had just six at-bats a season ago. The slimmeddown Panda looked like he was five years younger in spring training, batting .338 with five home runs and 20 RBIs in 21 games. If the Sox can get him to bat around .285 this season, it should be considered a win.

Arms race When the Red Sox acquired Chris Sale this past December, there was a train of thought that the Sox should consider trading away some pitching. They did deal Clay Buchholz to Philadelphia,

but even then it was like, “They’re going to have to put one of these guys in the bullpen … they have too many starters.” As tired as the old saying “you can never have enough pitching” is, it might be the most accurate cliche in all of sports. Boston’s young studs have blossomed into All-Star vets. JOE PANTORNO @MetroBOS sports@metro.us

At the dawn of the 2017 Major League Baseball season, the Red Sox are looking like a legitimate World Series contender with one of the most well-rounded rosters in the league. With the addition of Chris Sale to David Price and reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello, Boston’s top three starters are a nightmare for opposing offenses. The Red Sox offense packs quite a punch of its own though, and much of it has to do with the rise of

shortstop Xander Bogaerts and right fielder Mookie Betts. Both 24-year-old stars are entering new territory in 2017 as the prime faces of the Red Sox lineup. Their largest source of protection, David Ortiz, retired after having the most successful season as a 40-year-old in MLB history with 38 home runs and 127 RBIs. While it remains to be seen how the two young bats of Boston’s lineup will respond with just Hanley Ramirez and Jackie Bradley as support, they certainly look capable of reproducing their stellar 2016 seasons. Out of nowhere, Bogaerts developed into one of the top power-hitting shortstops in the league with 21 home runs and 89

RBIs. His previous career high was 12 round trippers in 2014. A lot of that can be attributed to his newfound strength. At a somewhat unassuming 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, Bogaerts showed last year that he could get his hands inside and turn on the ball for power. He’s not shy at the plate either, making contact with 67 percent of pitches thrown outside the strike zone, per fangraphs.com. It helped spark a 26game hit streak, garner a first-ever All-Star Game selection and Silver Slugger Award. Betts went to his first All-Star Game and won his first Silver Slugger as well, but he had a legitimate shot at becoming the 11th player in Red Sox his-

COMBINED RBI FOR BETTS AND BOGAERTS LAST YEAR tory to win the American League MVP. He launched 31 home runs and added 113 RBIs with a .318 batting average, finishing second in the MVP voting behind Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. While those gaudy stats are impressive for a middle-of-the-order bat, it was even more impressive that most of those numbers came from the leadoff spot. Betts has found a way to hit for power to all

fields, making it difficult for opposing pitchers to key in on any one part of the zone. No matter where they throw, he will most likely get a good swing on it. With Ortiz gone, expect Betts to make his way down n toward the middle of the lineup and possibly bat cleanup with Bogaerts in front of him. Given their youth and meteoric rise to the top of Major League Baseball, these new “Killer B’s” could be the headliners of another golden era in Boston.

Sox with a different looking bullpen in 2017 After Craig Kimbrel, the Sox’ bullpen looks “iffy. JAMES TOSCANO @Jimmy_Toscano sports@metro.us

For the second straight offseason, the Red Sox made a trade to strengthen their bullpen. And for the second straight season, that player has found himself on the disabled list to begin that season. Last year, it was Carson Smith, who the Red Sox acquired in a deal that sent Wade Miley to Seattle. This year, it’s Tyler Thornburg, who the Red Sox acquired in a deal that sent Travis Shaw to Milwaukee. Smith suffered a strain of his flexor mass muscle dur-

ing 2016 spring training, was placed on the DL and then activated in early May. He lasted just three outings before going back on the DL and undergoing Tommy John surgery, of which he’s still recovering from today. The hope is that Thornburg’s injury, which is an impingement of his right shoulder, will not end up as something more serious. Like Smith, the Sox had high hopes that Thornburg would be the setup man for Craig Kimbrel. Now, however, it’ll be a bit of a patchwork job right out of the gates. Not ideal. But the show must go on.
