TRUMP DROPS BANNON AIR FORCE F-16 CRASHES US DISMISSES RUSSIAN FROM SECURITY COUNCIL NEAR WASHINGTON ASSERTION OF BLAME

President Donald Trump removed his chief strategist Steve Bannon from the National Security Council. Trump’s overhaul of the NSC, confirmed by a White House official, also elevated General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Dan Coats, the director of National Intelligence who heads all 17 U.S. intelligence agencies. The official said the change moves
the NSC “back to its core function of what it’s supposed to do.” It also appears to mark a victory by national security adviser H.R. McMaster, who had told some national security experts he felt he was in a battle to the death with Bannon and others on the White House staff. REUTERS

A U.S. Air Force F-16 fighter plane crashed near Washington on Wednesday during a training mission, and the pilot ejected safely while suffering nonlife-threatening injuries, the military said. The District of Columbia Air National Guard plane went down about 9:15 a.m. some 6 miles southwest of the capital’s Joint Base Andrews while on a training
flight with other National Guard aircraft, the base said in a statement on Twitter. “The pilot ejected and sustained non-life-threatening injuries,” it said. The statement gave no details on the possible cause of the crash. Prince George’s County Fire spokesman Mark Brady said on Twitter that the pilot was being evaluated at hospital and was in good condition. REUTERS

U.S. officials dismissed Russia’s assertion on Wednesday that Syrian rebels were to blame for a poison gas attack rather than President Bashar al-Assad, and signaled possible unilateral action over what Donald Trump called an “affront to humanity.” The president said the attack, which killed at least 70 people, many of them children, “crossed a lot of lines,” an allusion to his
predecessor Barack Obama’s threat to topple Assad with air strikes if he used such arms. It was not clear what, if any, action Trump would take. Western countries, including the United States, blamed Assad’s armed forces for the worst chemical attack in Syria for more than four years. REUTERS

Reebok aims to ‘grow’ plant-based, sustainable shoes out of cotton and corn The new line, which may eventually be completely compostable, is part of a growing trend among manufacturers to be more environmentally friendly. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota letters@metro.us
Reebok is growing shoes, and they are about ready to blossom. The global apparel company will release a limited-edition, plantbased line of athletic shoes in the fall that will feature a sole made from industrial-grown corn, along with an organic cotton upper. The Cotton + Corn initiative is Reebok’s effort to create a more sustainable and recyclable shoe, and position itself as an environment-friendly label. Shoe manufacturers are increasingly moving in that direction. “Everything that goes into this product are things that can be grown,” said Bill McInnis, who leads Reebok’s innovation department, which it calls the Future Team. That compares to

petroleum and oil-based products, he said, which are “pulled from the ground, and once you use them, you can’t ever use them again.” While Reebok isn’t breaking new ground with cotton, it is among the first major brands to use corn to create an athletic shoe, the company said. Eventually, Reebok hopes to develop a shoe that can be composted.

“Everything that goes into this product are things that can be grown.” Bill McInnis
The company, which will move its headquarters to Boston in the fall, partnered with the manufacturing company DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Product to come up with the corn base for the new shoe. The material,
which DuPont has trademarked, is called Susterra, and was developed from field corn. Besides cotton, companies have looked for more innovative ways to create apparel out of natural fibers and crops.

A 2013 MIT study found that creating a pair of shoes generates about 30 pounds of carbon dioxide, equal to leaving on a 100-watt lightbulb for one week straight. And when that shoe
is worn out, Americans throw out an estimated 300 million shoes each year, with most of them ending up in landfills. “If you stand back and look at the athletic shoe industry as a whole, nei-

The goal is to have a range of plant-based shoes that will be compostable. That way, shoe owners will be able to say goodbye to their beloved pair of well-worn sneakers without leaving the slightest carbon footprint.
SHOELESS
Shoe manufacturers go green Reebok’s effort is one example of a growing trend among shoe manufacturers to consider the Earth. Nike has its “Reuse-aShoe” and “Nike Grind” programs, which turn old sneakers into surfaces for running tracks, playgrounds and weightroom floors. Bostonbased New Balance is part of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, a collection of brands with a lofty vision to produce “no unnecessary environmental harm.” U.S. consumers spend about $30 billion a year on footwear, according to StatisticBrain. That leaves a big carbon footprint, from the manufacture of the products and their eventual disposal.
Among the most common is hemp, used in clothing and in footwear, with Californiabased Vans shoe and apparel company perhaps the most well-known purveyor. While hemp has its environmental benefits, it is different from other crops because farmers must first get approval from the Drug Enforcement Agency before they sow the seeds, the Guardian

Shoe retailer Payless files for bankruptcy, to close 400 stores Discount footwear retailer Payless ShoeSource said it had filed for Chapter 11 protection on Tuesday with a plan to restructure debt and immediately close 400 underperforming stores in the United States and Puerto Rico. Privately owned Payless Inc. joins a long list of brick-andmortar retailers to fall victim to declining mall traffic in the midst of a rise of internet shopping and rapidly changing consumer tastes. “This is a difficult, but necessary, decision driven by the continued challenges of the retail environment, which will only intensify,” Payless Chief Executive Officer W. Paul Jones said in a statement. The Topeka, Kansas-based company listed assets in the range of $500 million to $1 billion and liabilities of $1 billion
to $10 billion in a filing with U.S. Bankruptcy Court in St. Louis. Payless, with 4,400 stores in more than 30 countries, said it had reached an agreement with two-thirds of its top lenders to cut its debt by 50 percent. Existing lenders have agreed to provide up to $385 million in debtor-in-possession financing, allowing Payless to remain in business and pay its bills throughout the Chapter 11 process. The company said that an $80 million new term-loan financing will allow it to emerge from Chapter 11 “well positioned for future growth and profitability post-restructuring.” Following the store closures, Payless said it will “aggressively manage” its remaining real estate lease portfolio, while looking to invest in growth areas and expand in international markets such as Latin America. NJ Transit skewers Amtrak for derailment fallout NJ Transit will continue to add train, bus and ferry service on Thursday, its executive director said. AMANDA MIKELBERG @MetroNewYork
amanda.mikelberg@metro.us
The minor train derailment at Penn Station that turned into a far-reaching transit catastrophe is entirely Amtrak’s responsibility, NJ Transit argued at a news briefing Wednesday afternoon. NJ Transit Executive Director Steven H. Santoro blistered Amtrak with a list of criticisms and demands as his company has had to accommodate the disruption by adding train, bus and ferry service until at least the end of the service day on Thursday. The most up to date service announcements can be found on the NJ Transit website and its Twitter page. “We will take all mea-

sures to hold Amtrak accountable, Santoro said, explaining that his carrier is a tenant of Amtrak, which owns the tracks. “In the short term, we demand that Amtrak move forward in forming a team consisting of rail experts from NJ Transit,
Amtrak and LIRR to walk every inch of track at Penn Station New York, and perform an exhaustive inspection and analysis of all tracks, Santoro said. Amtrak responded in a statement soon after Santoro’s news briefing:
“We value our partnership with the commuter railroads and share the frustration these recent issues present to all of our customers. For this reason, Amtrak has requested the FRA join in a thorough review of infrastructure at Penn Station
to evaluate current conditions. “New York Penn Station is our busiest and most important station, and we take our role as host seriously and make every effort to keep it operating smoothly. We are investigating the causes of
these recent derailments and will take prompt action to address them. We will continue to work with our partners at LIRR and NJ Transit to ensure that adequate work windows and funding are available to keep these heavily-used and aged assets functioning reliably as we pursue the long term goal of modernizing Penn Station infrastructure. On Monday, an Acela Express train carrying 1,200 passengers derailed, forcing Penn Station to shut down a number of tracks for repairs, which in turn wreaked havoc on transit. Few passengers were injured. On March 24, an Amtrak train derailed at 9 a.m. at Penn Station and collided with a NJ Transit train on a parallel track. “Having two derailments in just over a week is unacceptable, Santorno stated, “and our customers are bearing the brunt. We have and will continue to press Amtrak on the need for corrective actions now.

PRESIDENTIAL PAL Trump defends Fox News host O’Reilly as ‘good person’ President Donald Trump on Wednesday defended TV anchor Bill O’Reilly after a report that the conservative commentator and his employer, 21st Century Fox, paid five women to settle claims he sexually harassed them. “I think he’s a person I know well — he is a good person,” Trump said of O’Reilly in an interview with The New York Times.
The Times reported over the weekend that Fox and O’Reilly paid $13 million to five women who accused him of sexual harassment.

A white man who police said traveled to New York City to harm black people pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a charge of murder “as a crime of terrorism” for the fatal stabbing of an AfricanAmerican on a Manhattan sidewalk last month. James Jackson, 28, turned himself in to police March 22 after authorities circulated security-camera footage of him, describing Jackson as the suspect in the killing two days earlier of 66-year-old Timothy Caughman. Clad in a gray sweatshirt and with his arms shackled to his waist, Jackson spoke only to confirm he could not afford his own attorney and to enter his plea during his court appearance in Manhattan. Jackson had told police, and would later tell reporters in a jailhouse interview, that he traveled to New York last month from his Baltimore home to kill multiple black men.
He said he hoped his planned killing spree in the heart of the country’s media capital would deter black men from dating white women, according to police and a New York Daily News account of an interview with him. Moments before being stabbed, Caughman had been gathering bottles and cans from garbage bins to exchange at a recycling center for small change. He managed to stagger to a nearby police station before dying. Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke at Caughman’s funeral Saturday, decrying what he called a racist murder. Prosecutors have brought six charges against Jackson: murder as a crime of terrorism, first-degree murder, murder as a hate crime and three counts of criminal possession of a weapon. If convicted of murder as a crime of terrorism, Jackson would face a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole. Jackson is due back in court May 31. His courtappointed public defender declined to comment to reporters after Wednesday’s hearing. REUTERS

Judge seeks details on Giuliani role in Iran sanctions case The former mayor represented a gold trader accused of conspiring to violate the sanctions against Iran. A federal judge on Wednesday ordered that he be given more detail about former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani and another lawyer’s representation of a Turkish gold trader charged with conspiring to violate U.S. sanctions against Iran. U.S. District Judge Richard Berman in Manhattan said he needed additional information to ensure that conflicts of interest did not prevent Giuliani and former Attorney General Michael Mukasey from effectively representing Reza Zarrab, who is in U.S. custody. Zarrab is accused of conspiring to conduct illegal transactions through U.S. banks on behalf of Iran’s government. Prosecutors said in a court filing last week that eight of the U.S. banks involved in the case were clients of Giuliani or Mukasey’s law firms, and that Giuliani’s firm was a registered agent of Turkey, posing potential conflicts. Benjamin Brafman, an attorney for Zarrab, said at a court hearing on

Tuesday that Giuliani and Mukasey were working on a “diplomatic solution” to the case and would not represent Zarrab in court. Giuliani, who has advised President Donald Trump, and Mukasey traveled to Turkey in late February to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the case. Brafman said Tuesday that Mukasey discussed the trip in advance with Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Zarrab, a dual national of Iran and Turkey, was previously arrested in 2013 in a Turkish corruption probe of people tied to Erdogan, then prime minister of Turkey. The judge ordered Brafman to meet with Giuliani and Mukasey and submit information on what kind of work they were hired to do for Zarrab, what kind of work their firms had done for the banks and what the firms were doing to avoid conflicts. Berman ordered Brafman to say whether Zarrab’s legal fees were being paid by someone else, and if so, who. Berman also ordered Brafman to submit a description of the relationship between Giuliani’s law firm and Turkey, including any involvement by Giuliani himself. Another hearing is set for April 24. Baby Boomers May Avoid Knee Surgery With Modern Arthritis Treatments Doctors say these two factors are the keys to knee arthritis treatment success and relieving pain without surgery By Matt Edgar America’s Health Writer New York City - Everyone has said it at one time or another. If I had only known about “this” sooner - things would be very different today. That’s what many knee arthritis pain sufferers are saying about this technology and treatment. “We all know that countless lives are being saved every year because of early detection and better treatment ” noted the clinic director at the NY Pain MD in New York City. “The same holds true for treating arthritis pain. Knee Pain Screenings Offered To Help Determine If New York Metro Area Residents Qualify For Popular Treatment Knee pain sufferers have limited time to claim knee pain screening to see if all-natural knee arthritis treatment might work for them If you qualify for this treatment, it might be one of the happiest days of your life. That’s because, for the past year and a half, hundreds NY Pain MD of knee pain sufferers have New York City. That’s when their specially trained-doctors added Hyalgan treatments to their already successful comprehensive knee pain relief program. Viscosupplementation is unique because - eventhough it is manufactured by a pharmaceutical company, it is NOT considered a drug because it is a natural substance with an incredible story.
Why So Many Want It You see, when you suffer with arthritis - the lubricatThis means instead of gliding smoothly - your bones start to rub and grind against each other. This causes a little pain in the beginning - but over time the pain steadily gets worse until it is excruciating.
Like “Joint Oil” Viscosupplementation works so well because it is like ‘joint oil.” It is a natural substance that contains one of the natural building blocks of the synovial fluid that lubricates your knee. Scientists and researchers discovered this natural building block to synovial fluid in the rooster’s comb - that big red thing on top of the roosters head. It is extracted from the roosters comb, purified and concentrated. They have also developed medical lubricants that are also natural but made a bit like yogurt and "cultured" into highly effective arthritis pain-fighting medical lubricants. When introduced directly into your knee joint, it is like squirting oil on a rusty door hinge. Viscosupplementation allows your joints to glide more smoothly eliminating a lot of the rubbing, grinding and pain.
Can Supplements Do The Same Thing? No. Glucosamine and chondroitin and other supplements are much different. You can only get this from a doctor and it often helps knee pain sufferers who got limited or no success from glucosamine and chondroitin. Beware of unsubstantiated claims made by supplements to do what this advanced medical procedure does.
Why You Should Try This Even If You’ve Already Had Similar Treatments Without Results... “We have been able to help so many knee pain sufferers - even many who have already tried other treatments like Synvisc, Supartz, Orthovisc and even Hyalgan. This is because our treating doctors always use “Precision Arthritis Targeting Technology”. This allows us to place the Viscosupplementation exactly where is needs to be. And that’s not all “Every case is individual. Some patients get quite a bit of relief right away - others take a little more time. But most have been extremely happy. We’ve noted results lasting no less than 6 months for many but up to 2 years for some patients.. Patients who were suffering for years with bad knee pain are getting their lives back... going for walks again and exercising. It’s amazing to see. For Trump, Mar-a-Lago retreat is place to break the ice with China’s Xi to the president’s personal place is a big deal. Trump and Xi are to hold their first summit encounter beginning on Thursday at Mar-aLago, a property that original owner Marjorie Merriweather Post’s estate willed to the U.S. government for use as a diplomatic and presidential retreat after her death in 1973. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters in Beijing that the Chinese side was fine with having the meeting there. “President Trump, after taking office, announced that Mar-aLago would be the winter White House. The U.S. proposal to hold the U.S.-China heads of state meeting there, I think, represents the importance that the U.S. side places on this meeting. China
President Donald Trump has told visitors that his Mar-a-Lago retreat is set up perfectly for foreign visits, but the Chinese side was initially hesitant when word came that Trump would like to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping there. Even after seeing images of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s backslapping sessions with Trump at Mar-a-Lago in February, Chinese officials thought the oceanfront, Spanish-style club in Palm Beach, Florida, lacked the symbolic significance of the White House itself. “They thought, no, it has to be the White House, the symbolism of that, a senior administration official told Reuters. “They were ultimately convinced that this was worth doing. most important thing is to develop China-U.S. relations and make contributions to both countries
and the world, she said. Topping the agenda at Mar-a-Lago will be U.S.China trade ties and U.S. requests for China to help rein in its nuclear-armed neighbor North Korea. Trump bought the estate in 1985 and turned it into an exclusive club, which now boasts a membership fee of $200,000 and is a haven for the tony Palm Beach set who pull up to the gate in Bentleys and Rolls-Royces. Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, will join Trump and his wife, Melania, for dinner on Thursday night then Trump and Xi will have a series of meetings there on Friday. The entire visit will last less than 24 hours. “What matters is that the two of them get together for a successful summit, even if it’s on the moon, said former U.S. ambassador to China,
Max Baucus. “However, I do think that Mar-a-lago will probably help enhance conversation between the two of them. President Trump can show President Xi around, show him the digs. Trump is very proud of that, and President Xi will be interested in seeing all of that. Past U.S. presidents have often turned to settings away from the trappings of Washington to conduct delicate diplomacy. George H.W. Bush had his seaside estate in Kennebunkport, Maine, and George W. Bush frequently played host to foreign leaders at his ranch in Crawford, Texas. Trump’s immediate predecessor, Barack Obama, used the Sunnylands retreat in Rancho Mirage, California, as a site for an informal summit with Xi in 2013. REUTERS

Taser International Inc. makers the eponymous device used by police to stun and incapacitate a person temporarily. Taser International Inc. is changing its name to Axon as it pushes further into the software business. The Axon name comes from Taser’s unit that sells police body cameras, patrol car cameras and the software for managing the hours of digital footage they generate. In a gamble that police departments will sign up for paid software subscriptions, the company is offering free body cameras to police officers in addition to a year of free access to evidence.com, its online software for managing video and other evidence.

Taser still gets the bulk of its revenue from its weapons, which use electrical current to immobilize targets. Last year, $202.6 million of its $268.2 million in revenue came from its weapons segment, mostly in the form of replacement cartridges. Nearly a quarter of Taser’s revenue now comes from the Axon segment. Software revenue for evidence.com nearly doubled to $11.7 million. “The hardware cre-

and hours of raw data,” said Steve Dyer, senior research analyst for CraigHallum Capital Group. “You have the question not only of how to store the data in an industry that is not traditionally that tech savvy, but also how to handle digital evidence with the same safeguards as physical evidence.” Evidence.com software is sold on a subscription basis, typically five-year contracts. That means Taser has to spend money to sign up customers, while revenue follows over length of the contract. Software companies including salesforce.com or Workday Inc. have persuaded investors to accept this revenue model. But it can cut into profits in the short term: Taser’s profits dipped from $19.9 million to $17.2 million last year despite strong revenue growth. REUTERS

Facebook to use photo-matching to block repeat ‘revenge porn’ Facebook is adding tools to make it easier for users to report so-called revenge porn and to automatically prevent the images from being shared again once they have been banned, the company said. “Revenge porn” refers to the sharing of sexually explicit images on the internet, without the consent of the people depicted in the pictures, in order to extort or humiliate them. The practice disproportionately affects women, who are sometimes targeted by former partners. Facebook has been sued in the United States and elsewhere by people who said it should have done more to prevent the practice. The company in 2015 made clear that images “shared in revenge” were forbidden, and users have long had the ability to report posts as violating the

terms of service. Beginning on Wednesday, users of the world’s largest social network should see an option to report a picture as inappropriate specifically because it is a “nude photo of me,” Facebook said in a statement. The company also said it was launching an automated process to prevent the repeat shar-
ing of banned images. Photo-matching software will keep the pictures off the core Facebook network as well as off its Instagram and Messenger services, it said. Users who share “revenge porn” may see their accounts disabled, the company said. Facing criticism, the company last year met representatives from more than 150 women’s
safety organizations and decided it needed to do more, Antigone Davis, global head of safety at Facebook, said in a phone interview. A specially trained group of Facebook employees will provide human review of each reported image, Davis said. The process to prevent repeat sharing requires Facebook to retain the banned pictures in a database, although the images are blurred and only a small number of employees have access to the database, the company said. Prosecutors and lawmakers have also sought ways to prevent the spread of “revenge porn,” seeking additional penalties for a practice that they said has ruined careers and families and even led to suicide. Louis C.K. amends Trump comparison to Hitler
the word RACHAEL CLEMMONS rachael.clemmons@metro.us
Why won’t Chelsea Handler leave Angelina alone?
ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES
Louis C.K. would like to clarify his statements about President Trump. In March of last year, the comedian called Donald Trump an “insane bigot,” and also “Hitler.” This week, he told Stephen Colbert he has no intention of backing down from the statement — but he would like to make a little amendment. “I guess he’s not as profound as I thought he was. I thought he was a new kind of evil,” CK said, according to
Vanity Fair. “But he’s just a lying sack of s—t. It’s just simple.” True! C.K. is known for being a comedian, but really he should be a poet. He’d win the Pulitzer! There’s something beautiful about the way he puts words together; later in the interview he calls Trump a “gross crook, dirty rotten lying sack of s—t,” and it just brings a single, perfectly formed tear to my eye. So, yeah, Louis C.K. 2020?
As you may know, Chelsea Handler and Jennifer Aniston are true-blue friends. Besties, if you will. As you also may know, Chelsea Handler just says whatever she wants all the time, and sometimes it causes drama. For example, in this interview with You Magazine, Handler is asked for her opinion on Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie, because we have magically been transported back to 2005. “I don’t think Jen cares about what’s going on, and it’s crazy that people thinks she does. As if she’s sitting around
caring about [Angelina Jolie]. I know I don’t.” Handler, 42, knows that the best way to prove you don’t care about someone is to talk about them constantly. That’s why she went on a rant on her show, calling Jolie a “f—king lunatic.” It’s because she doesn’t care! I mean, when I don’t care about someone, I use a huge platform, like, say, my television show, or perhaps an interview about my upcoming projects, to talk about the thing I don’t give a flying toot about. Because I don’t care. As always, Handler is a role model and a real mature lady.
Pepsi finally pulls tonedeaf Kendall Jenner ad Kendall Jenner is cashing in on the very fashionable trend of resistance, and it’s going about as well as you could expect. The 21-year-old — who attended Fashion Week instead of the Women’s March — has partnered with Pepsi for an ad that is as straight-up bananas as it is tone-deaf. In the ad, Jenner decides to quit a modeling gig halfway through because there’s a protest going on and she just has to join! The protest, of course, looks more like a fun weekend activity — what with all the choreographed dancing and impromptu jam seshes — instead of a necessary, sometimesdangerous plea for change. All these people are filled with joy because I guess in this commercial, Trump’s America is not real or worrisome. Even worse, at
the end of the commercial, Jenner hands a cop a cold, gleaming can of Pepsi. Because if anything is going to bring our torn country back together, it’s a can of America’s second-favorite cola. This is what happens when you don’t have people of color in a room to help you make decisions. The thought of Kendall Jenner as the face of some sort of antiTrump resistance is laughable. As is Pepsi’s attempt at inclusion — it legitimately looks like it had a checklist of which different racial stereotypes they should include. It’s really very bad. On Wednesday afternoon, Pepsi pulled the ad after a wave of intense criticism. Maybe someone realized that an ad that essentially minimizes police brutality wasn’t a great idea.

Back to the past with Christopher Lloyd The legendary actor still got starstruck with his famous “Going in Style” co-stars.
Reeling in years One of the strangest aspects of Lloyd’s career is that he’s been playing white-haired old men for over 30 years. He was only 47 when he played Doc Brown in “Back to the Future.” Today he’s 78 — a little older than even Doc Brown ever was — but back then it could be a shock to see him with play his own age, standing there with brunette hair, in films like “Clue,” “Dennis the Menace” and John Sayles’ baseball biopic “Eight Men Out.” “I once did a Q&A for ‘Back to the Future,’ and some little kid asks for the microphone and says, ‘Mr. Lloyd, now that you’re older do you miss putting on old-age makeup?’” he says. He chuckles heartily. “Great observation for a little tyke.”

Sometimes you find yourself in a room laboriously explaining 1990’s “The Earth Day Special” to someone who was in it. That person is Christopher Lloyd. The star-studded program — one of the first earnest attempts to get American couch potatoes to really care about the environment — included a who’s who of film and TV. Christopher Lloyd was one of them. He and Michael J. Fox reprised their “Back to the Future” roles, doing a little sketch that had something or other to do with saving Mother Earth. L l o y d doesn’t even remember it. Then again, who does? We ask the legendary character actor — and staple of ’80s and ’90s blockbuster cinema, as well as “ Ta x i ’ s ”

resident Reverend Jim Ignatowski — about the forgotten, cheesily noble 27-year-old “Earth Day Special” only because another cast member was Morgan Freeman. It’s the only time the two have technically worked together — though they never shared a scene or even met — until they both appeared in “Going in Style,” Zach Braff’s new codger-bank-robber comedy, also starring Michael Caine and Alan Arkin. (Lloyd isn’t one of the thieves. He’s a fellow
retiree in their Brooklyn neighborhood who mostly makes funny faces.) That Christopher Lloyd might not remember a gig makes sense. According to the Internet Movie Database, he has more than 200 film and TV credits to his name. Some of them are huge (“Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” the “Addams Family” movies, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” which was his screen debut). Some of them aren’t. There’s
a lot of voice work. If he hasn’t been ubiquitous like he was three decades ago, he is consistently working. The projects can all blend together. “I’ve done a lot of films I haven’t heard about since wrap night,” Lloyd tells us. “But I don’t care. I have to work.” Lloyd recalls Billy Crystal making fun of Caine during one of the Academy Award telecasts, saying he “never saw a script he didn’t like.” “That’s kind of my philosophy,” Lloyd tells us. “Unless it’s total garbage, I’ll work, whatever comes along. The money might not be fabulous. But I don’t mind that.” He thinks of himself as the opposite of the actor who’s terribly picky. By contrast, think of Warren Beatty, who before last year’s How-
ard Hughes film “Rules Don’t Apply” didn’t make a movie for 15 years. “Some actors want to work, but they have a set of criteria that perhaps limits them,” Lloyd says “It gets worse as you get older. Although there’s always grandpas to play.” Amazingly, five de cades in the industry haven’t made Chris topher Lloyd any less prone to turn starstruck Even Lloyd couldn’t be lieve he was on a set with Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin “They’re like icons to me, the three of them,” he confesses. “Going in Style” also finds room for another legend: Ann Margret, who plays a feisty local fixated on Ar kin’s grumpy, anti-social character. “We were nev er working on the same day. I just met her yester day. She’s a personality.”

Before “True Blood aired on HBO, I’d read all the books. I was thoroughly invested in the show. I was so invested that, when it went off the rails in the final few seasons, I still watched. I had followed Sookie and her friends for so long that I kind of felt obligated, like you do with that one friend from college. You know, the one you really liked once upon a time, but now you can’t stand the way she chews. It wasn’t the books. I loved those. It was the show. I mean, really, the fairies were just a mess. The thing that’s different here is the charm. This show doesn’t seem to be taking itself too seriously, where “True Blood definitely did a lot of the

I always wished IHOP would serve alcohol. His first idea was to open a restaurant called Pancakes and Booze, but then repurposed it to create the shows. For Pancakes & Booze founder Tom Kirlin, combining free flapjacks, alcohol and art has been a recipe for success. The L.A. resident first devised his art-and-carb fest back in 2009 as a side project, a way for the former film and TV cameraman to make use of his studio space that would sit empty on nights he wasn’t working. He started out booking his friends and artists who responded to open calls. But the low-key vibe of the art shows, combined with the pancakes and libations — basically, the antithesis of the stuffy wine-and-cheese gallery shtick — made the event

Besides a David Lynch retro at IFC, “Twin Peaks” trivia at Videology and good old-fashioned bingewatching at home, here’s another way to get your mind right — or rather, properly addled — before the “Twin Peaks” revival in May: a David Lynch tribute art show. “In Dreams” opens Saturday at the Spoke Art Gallery on the Lower East Side, featuring Lynchinspired works by over 80 international artists. The San Franciscobased contemporary art gallery, which only re-
cently opened its New York City location, is known for curating popculture themed tributes. Past shows have included odes to Wes Anderson, Martin Scorsese and a Quentin Tarantino vs. Coen brothers mashup. Spoke NYC gallery director Jessica Ross tells us the gallery first hosted a David Lynch tribute show back in 2014. But when they learned of the upcoming “Twin Peaks” revival, they thought it’d be perfect timing to put on a second installment at the New York City location, she says. based artist Matt Skiff’s graphic comic-style rendering of the creepy mirror shot of Special Agent Dale Cooper from the Season 2 finale, or Brooklynbased artist Justin Hager’s Renaissancesque painting of Laura Palmer’s plastic-wrapped corpse being carried out as Leland, Bob, Cooper and more look on in anguish. You’ll also see an alternate “Mulholland Dr.” movie poster of an L.A. diner in dusky blues and pink from graphic designer George Townley, or surrealist Allison Reimold’s “Blue Velvet” homage intertwining Laura Dern’s and Isabella Rosellini’s
faces in an eerie yin and yang. While the show runs through April 30, opening night on Saturday has plenty of perks: free beer from Bronx Brewery, “Twin Peaks” postcards and “I Heart Dale Cooper” and “Welcome to Twin Peaks” pins from Etsy, and a raffle giveaway to select screenings from Roxy Cinema’s upcoming Lynch retro, with the first hundred guests receiving free tickets to the Roxy’s May 1 showing of “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.” Possibly the best part: a Black Lodge photo booth, which will recreate the red room from scratch. A miniature version of our world is coming to the Crossroads of the World. Named for Jonathan Swift’s adventurer who washes up in the tiny kingdom of Lilliput, Gulliver’s Gate is like a model train set taken to the next five levels. The 87th-scale exhibit spans 300 scenes of famous manmade landmarks — the Taj Mahal, Times Square, St. Basil’s in Moscow — to natural wonders, from the bucolic New England countryside to the Philippines’ rice terraces. New York gets an entire room to itself —
just don’t make too much of the Guggenheim being around the corner from the Chrysler Building, as the exhibit takes a bit of artistic license. “Creating beautiful models and landscapes that have exhausting detail always interested me as child,” says Michael Langer, co-founder and vice president of development at Gulliver’s Gate. Alas, “I always had better vision than dexterity. What better way to fulfill the dream of having the biggest toy in the world than working with the best artists from around the globe to help bring my vision to life?” For a tiny world, Gulliver’s Gate spans a

the past, like the Lenape Indian settlement on the banks of the East River near the Brooklyn Bridge,
right where it stood centuries ago. “With the fluidity of time and space, we can be ever-changing and always relevant,” Langer explains. Expect the exhibit to keep changing, adding new scenes that look to the past, incorporate new marvels, and even speculate on the possible future, like a Martian space station. This isn’t just a fancy diorama though. Look closer, and you’ll see surprising details everywhere. There are zombies chasing tourists in Egypt, a protest in Israel, and police surrounding a suspicious package on a subway platform beneath Grand Central. The exhibition isn’t
afraid to get real. “Gulliver’s Gate is the realization of a vision by over 600 artists and craftspeople from around the world,” says Langer. “The model makers were tasked to create a world that best represents how they see the region they are from. They were also given a fair amount of latitude to impart their own personality and humor into the exhibit.” Trains won’t be the only moving parts. There’s a working airport, cars that will move on magnetized tracks, skiers will come down the slopes of formerly Olympic host city Sochi and more. Guests who spring for an RFID key can use it to activate scenes like the Loch Ness Monster emerging from its lake and Zeus raining down thunder and lightning from Mount

Much of Ybor City remains a throwback to the origins of Tampa.

Florida is a relatively young state, but what it lacks in old buildings it makes up for with plenty of cultural history. You’ll find plenty of cigars and even a slice of Havana in Tampa, particularly in vibrant Ybor City.
Have a cigar We knew we were in the right place at the first whiff of the aromas emanating from Tabanero Cigars. Ybor City in downtown Tampa is known as the cigar capital of the

world, with a number of old-school shops where stogies are hand-crafted. Our favorite is Tabanero Cigars, which offers an array of quality smokes. Located in the heart of Ybor on Seventh Avenue, the microfactory (just six rollers at the front of the shop turn out its stock) is renowned for the quality of its tobacco and the skill of its artisans. We enjoyed the Maceda Press, a rich cohiba, which is potent but not overpowering. There’s nothing like sitting on a couch with your feet up while puffing away indoors.
Experience oldtimey Tampa After finishing off our stogies, we wanted to learn more about cigars, so we trekked to the Tampa Bay History Center, which features a
reproduction of a 1920s cigar store. Details of the rise, fall and re-emergence of the cigar and Tampa are covered, along with a sprawling 12,000 years of Florida history. As much as we love cigars, the section of the museum chronicling the Spanish conquistadors is the most fascinating and worth the visit. Much like the rest of Tampa, the History Center is expanding: An $11 million addition will open by autumn, with ha promising first exhibit it called “Treasure Seekers: ers: Conquistadors, Pirates es and Shipwrecks.”

National Historic Landmark, by visiting the Henry B. Plant Museum that’s now housed in the same building. It’s worth checking out the site, which is now part of the University of Tampa, just to eyeball the artifacts (luxurious furniture and revealing photos) and the striking Moorish Revival architecture.

Visit Cuba without leaving the country In 1951, a Cuban couple decided to donate their Ybor City property to the state of Cuba as a memorial to the poet and revolutionary Jose Marti. Newly free and independent Cuba accepted, and Tampa has a small patch of Cuban land, a serene and well-maintained plot open to the public. Marti, a provocative 19th-century philosopher, would be pleased that so many picnic in his bucolic park.

KNICKS MUST TRANSITION TO THE YOUNG STARS The NBA season is winding down and for the Knicks, well, it’s been over for a while now. Coming into this season, some touted the Knicks as a “superteam” with two former All-Stars, Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah, teaming up with Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis. Now with only four games remaining in the season, the Knicks are looking at the NBA draft lottery once again instead of the playoffs. It has been a bumpy road from the get-go for first-year coach Jeff Hornacek, as he tried to add an aspect of Phil Jackson’s triangle offense to his high-pace style. It’s fair to say that the Knicks as a team did not buy into it and it showed night in and night out. Hornacek can only be blamed for so much of the Knicks’ woes as he is not out there playing. But he can be held accountable for the lack of continuity with the team. You could see there was a rift between the veterans and the younger players on the bench. There were plenty of instances during the season when the younger

bench players would outshine the vets and it was clear that it did not sit well with the older guys. Those types of relationships tear teams apart and that is what we have now. The Knicks have a plethora of young players who showed that they are willing to buy into what Hornacek and Jackson are selling. The likes of and Porzingis, Willy Hernangomez, Ron Baker and Mindaugas Kuzminskas
all showed willingness to share the ball and play together as one cohesive unit. The veterans, on the other hand, seemed to be focused more on themselves. A visible lack of fluidity began to show among them on the floor, especially when guys came in off the bench. It seemed as though the vets did not trust the younger guys, and sadly it looked like they did not want them to succeed. That may not be the case, but subconsciously it might have been. Regardless, it leaked through to the fans and media, which is a recipe for disaster. So what’s next for the Knicks? Carmelo Anthony has overstayed his welcome in New York. It may be time for him to waive that no trade clause and move on from the organization. It is now more than apparent that a team cannot be built around Anthony as the centerpiece. He is not a leader despite being one of the greatest scorers of his time at his position. Melo has failed to reach his ceiling as a

complete basketball player and wherever he goes next, I think he needs play in a less-central role. Other than Anthony, the Knicks are going to have to ride out Joakim Noah’s huge deal for the next three seasons and there is no chance that anyone will want to trade for his bum ass. The Knicks won’t have
to wait that long to see the departure of Derrick Rose, who will be a free agent and likely end up with the team that offers him the most money. Porzingis and Hernangomez have given hope to Knicks fans for a brighter future and will hopefully call Madison Square Garden home for a long time. Those are the two guys the Knicks
need to build around going forward. Having a perennial All-Star might look nice on paper, but when the wins don’t show up, it is time to take a good hard look at making some changes. There have been far more lows than highs during Melo’s tenure in New York and I think it’s time for him to move on.
2017 NFL Mock Draft: Predicting Giants, Jets 1st-round picks been thought to be an option with the sixth selection, but no good will come from drafting a pass catcher if there isn’t a competent quarterback to deliver him the ball.
It’s crunch time with the 2017 NFL Draft just three weeks away. With the Jets holding the No. 6 overall pick in the first round and the Giants at No. 23, both teams may be looking to upgrade the offense on April 27. Jets: Mitchell Trubisky, QB, North Carolina The Jets need a franchise quarterback. Bryce Petty (six games) and Christian Hackenberg (none) have not put together a large enough body of work at the NFL level to be considered that yet. In fact, Pro Football Focus ranked the two as the worst offensive tackle combination in all of football. Bolles is very athletic for a 6-foot-5, 297-pound prospect and possesses superior footwork to ensure that he is always in a good position to cut off edge rushers. Aries Taking business trips, giving interviews and learning skills will help you set a course for success. If you honor a promise, you will gain an ally.
Libra You’ll attract interesting people. Be careful what you get drawn into. Change can be good, but not if you can’t afford it. Temptation will drag you down.
Taurus Don’t take someone’s challenge of you the wrong way. Size up the situation before you commit to any competitive act that could lead to an injury. Stand up for yourself.
Scorpio The choices you have will excite you, but will probably leave friends or loved ones worried about the outcome. Reassurance will help you gain support.
Gemini Consider making a change to your current work environment. An opportunity will arise, but before you accept, make sure you can afford the underlying cost.
Sagittarius If you change your lifestyle, it will give you the freedom you need to follow your heart and dreams. Don’t give in to someone trying to control your life.
Cancer Stay focused when it comes to work and taking care of business. Refuse to let anyone dump his or her responsibilities on you. Let your anger spur you to work harder.
Capricorn Home is your sanctuary, and whether you make a residential move or alter your current living situation, you stand to prosper. Listen to your heart.
Leo Don’t let your personal life interfere with your job. If you have taken on too much, you must step up and work hard to get things done on time.
Aquarius Paying down personal bills will get you back on track. Money will come from an unexpected source, but you will end up being responsible for the paperwork involved.
Virgo A change in your personal finances is apparent. Be careful how you deal with tax matters and people trying to take advantage of you. Focus on personal gains.
Pisces It will be difficult to keep up with all the changes going on. Take a step back and remember what’s important. Emotional arguments can be expected. EUGENIA LAST
