The Republican head of a congressional inquiry into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election said he would temporarily step aside from the probe on Thursday because he is under investigation for disclosing classified information. Devin Nunes, chairman of the House of Representatives Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and an ally of Republican President Donald Trump,
characterized charges that he made unauthorized disclosures of classified information as “entirely false and politically motivated.” The surprise disclosure that Nunes was under investigation injected new uncertainty into the wider Russia probe by his committee.

Don Rickles, the master insult comic who created laughs with ridicule and sarcasm in a decades-long career that earned him the facetious nickname “Mr. Warmth,” died on Thursday at his Los Angeles home from kidney failure, his publicist said. He was 90. Rickles, who said he devised his brand of mockery-based humor because he was no good at telling traditional jokes, had
developed a bacterial infection in recent months that led him to cancel a number of performances. His death was confirmed by his spokesman, Paul Shefrin, who said Rickles is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara, as well as their daughter, Mindy Mann, and two grandchildren. He would have turned 91 on May 8. REUTERS

A year ago, Ana Febres-Cordero tried to end her life. Now she’s running against the stigma those with mental illness still face. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota
kristin.toussaint@metro.us
A year ago, Ana FebresCordero could barely get herself out of bed. The Concord native was struggling with depression and anxiety, and was so desperate that in the fall of her freshman year at Dickinson College, she tried to end her life. But her friends were able to intervene, and took Febres-Cordero to the school’s wellness center. The road to stability and happiness would be a long one, but would lead her on a new path. Now 20 and on firmer ground, Febres-Cordero is gearing up to run the Boston Marathon on April 17. The training has been intense, but nothing will compare to the emotion upon crossing the finish line, she said. “It makes me think of mental illness as a marathon,” she said. “You’re ambitious to start, like you’re ambitious to get help … but you’re going to hit places where something hurts or you have to slow down. It’s a process.” After her suicide attempt, Febres-Cordero felt ashamed about her struggle and thought others would see her as weak. Still uncertain about her place in life, she left school not long after and moved back home. Weeks later, her uncle sent her a picture of posters on display at Logan
Airport, a campaign by McLean Hospital called Deconstructing Stigma: A Change in Thought Can Change a Life. It proved to be a “turning point,” Febres-Cordero said. The young woman realized “there’s no reason to be ashamed of something you’re going through. It’s called mental illness for a reason.” As she got treatment, her father, Rafael, had an idea. “Once I saw her in a better place, I asked if she was interested in running the marathon together,” he said. Her father is an avid runner — this will be his fourth Boston Marathon — and Ana took after him, having been passionate about running until her bad days eventually overwhelmed her. “It was just an intuition,” her father said, referring to his idea. “I felt that maybe watching herself returning to training for something as tough as the Boston Marathon … that she would embrace it, and she did, and she has.” His intuition was a good one, said Alan Fruzzetti, a child psychologist at McLean. Paying attention to physical and medical health are both important in order to improve overall mental health, he said. “Sustained and regular exercise makes us more resilient to stressful events, increases well-being and decreases rates of various problems around depression, anxiety and other diagnoses,” Fruzetti said. McLean had such an impact on Febres-Cordero that she decided to raise money to support the hospital’s Deconstructing Stigma campaign. For more information about Ana Febres-Cordero, visit Metro.us.

“Alexa, how do I get my Amazon app store refund? is a question many parents may soon be asking their virtual assistant. After a yearlong appeals process with the Federal Trade Commission, the online retailer will shell out more than $70 million for unauthorized in-app purchases kids made without their parents’ approval. Amazon will begin issuing refunds soon on the purchases made via
its app and virtual assistant Alexa through its Echo Dot smart speaker, the FTC said. More details on the refunds are forthcoming, but purchases made between November 2011 and May 2016 could be eligible for reimbursement. “This case demonstrates what should be a bedrock principle for all companies — you must get customers’ consent before you charge them, Thomas B. Pahl, acting director for the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said. One example of an Amazon app store purchase made without parental consent is an incident with the Echo Dot that went viral earlier this year. Brook Neitzel, 6, asked Alexa to get her cookies and a dollhouse. Soon after, both arrived on her
doorstep, puzzling her mother, Megan Neitzel, who later found how what happened and promptly put a requirement for a security code on future purchases through Alexa on her account. Instead of sending the items back, the Neitzels ate the cookies, which were Royal Dansk Danish Butter Cookies, if you’re interested, and donated the KidKraft Sparkle Mansion dollhouse to charity.  Apple and Google also had similar cases filed with the FTC. A federal district court ruled in April 2016 that Amazon billed consumers without authorization, and appeals soon followed, which included the FTC wanting an injunction that would prevent unauthorized future purchases. The FTC voted 2-0 to withdraw its appeal this week.

THE FUN STARTS HERE
Anne Hathaway vs. Jason Sudeikis
In “Colossal, in theaters Fri., April 14, Jason Sudeikis and Anne Hathaway play old school chums who reconnect — as she learns she can control a giant monster terrorizing Seoul, South Korea. NEON
“Colossal pits the two actors against each other in one of the strangest plots in memory. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
In person, Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis are buds. They don’t get along so well in “Colossal. In the sci-fi comedydrama, the Oscar-winning actress plays Gloria, a 30-something hot mess who’s forced — thanks in part to a considerable drinking problem — to ditch New York and return to her middleof-nowhere New Jersey hometown. There, she reconnects with Sudeikis’ Oscar, an old friend from school, and learns something truly bizarre: She has the power to control a giant kaiju monster
that wreaks havoc in South Korea. Dubbed “the Anne Hathaway Godzilla movie when it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, it’s also a dark look at friendship, particularly once Oscar turns out to be not as nice as he seems. We talked to Hathaway and Sudeikis, 34 and 41, respectively, about why people should see “Colossal in the theaters and how parenthood — and making the movie — has made them more empathetic. This is a conversationstarter. One thing people can talk about is Oscar. He’s a “nice guy, but like some “nice guys he can be as twisted and evil as any sexist pig. If he were on the internet, he’d probably be a men’s rights activist. Jason Sudeikis: If you really follow the internet troll from their Twitter
avatar to who they actually are, I don’t think all of them are going to be 400 pounds and living in their parents’ basement. I think they might be in the cubicle next to you. Anne Hathaway: Or coaching your kid’s soccer game. Sudeikis: Or your doctor. Sometimes that anonymity has the tendency to bring out the worst in us. The internet has unlocked our inner sociopaths. We can be too brutally honest. Hathaway: I’m fine with brutal honesty. But I don’t like when someone says to me — and I haven’t had my coffee — “Oh my God, you are so much better-looking in movies. I don’t like it when people get high on hurting me. But if people represent themselves in an honest way that’s kind to both of us, that evokes grace and dignity,
I’m fine with that. “Colossal also touches on anxieties people have about returning to their hometowns. That’s even more pronounced now, to those of us who come from places that have turned into Trump Country. Sudeikis: I would argue it’s maybe a good time to go home now. Both sides need to see each other. Not to be highfalutin’; I’m from Kansas, so I get it. But playing someone like Oscar, who hasn’t left home, it forced me to empathize with him. He’s someone one could judge. I’ve probably done that throughout my life. Both sides talking to each other will happen at some point. Right
Now We Cater
now I think we’re still a little shellshocked. Sudeikis: All the world is asking for is for everyone to get along. That might be why technology exists: not to push everyone away or snipe at each other from afar, but to empathize. Maybe that’s
GETTY
what VR’s purpose will be. It won’t just be video games and porn, but actual, true empathy — to see the world through someone else’s eyes. Hathaway: Think about that poor woman who was harassed online by that poor man. She was just trying to play a game, and he kept trying to grab her boobs. I don’t know what we’re going to get by calling that man a deviant and a pervert and shaming him. We need to find that dude, sit him down and say, “Do you know what you’re doing is disrespecting another human being? And I’m not actually a bleeding-heart person. I’m think I’m newly interested in having those conversations now that I’m a parent. Sudeikis: That’s happened to me, too. Being a parent has made me think like that as well.

Though best known for early-career body horror extravaganzas like “Dead Ringers” and “The Fly” or his late period adaptations of unadaptable books (“Naked Lunch,” “Crash” and “Cosmopolis”), there was a brief spell back in the mid-2000s when David Cronenberg made gangster movies. This weekend, Coolidge After Midnite is screening 35 mm prints of the director’s “A History of Violence” and “Eastern Promises,” a Dubya-era diptych of underworld duality in which the big-brained Canadian flirted with making mainstream thrillers. These are brisk B-pictures with a bit more on their minds, engineered to capitalize on the ambiguous magnetism of newly minted leading man Viggo Mortensen. The title of Friday night’s “A History of Violence” can be read two ways, as can most scenes in this darkly comic fable, which stars Mortensen

and impressively tattooed chauffeur to a family with more creepy Russian mob connections than our current presidential cabinet. A rare crime movie without gunplay, it boasts one of that decade’s most notorious suspense sequences, in which our hero is

ambushed in a steam room by a couple of bladewielding baddies. (Nothing more nerve-wracking than a knife fight when you’re naked.) Both pictures hinge upon their star’s rare ability to engage an audience while playing cards close
to his vest, and the films are fraught with doppelgangers and doubles — characters and scenes designed to serve as distorted mirror images of one another. “History” is bookended by two sharply contrasting sex scenes. The first finds Mortensen and wife Maria Bello tenderly indulging nostalgic teenage dreams, the missus even donning her old high school cheerleader’s outfit. The second is a bruising bout on their hardwood stairs, a vehement bit of rutting tinged with revulsion and lust. Here and throughout both films Cronenberg depicts violence as a virus, infecting the pastoral settings and perverting formerly idyllic interactions. He ends “History” with a parody of a Norman Rockwell painting — a “What did you do in the war, Daddy?” riff implying we all have Sunday dinners with murderers.

“Going in Style” Director: Zach Braff Stars: Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Alan Arkin Rating: PG-13 The best thing you can say about Zach Braff ’s “Going in Style” is that it doesn’t feel like a Zach Braff movie, like “Garden State.” That’s not true: The best thing you can say is it has some predictably charming work from its three leads, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin. It has a tiny bit of bite, concerning three wrinkly retirees who rob a bank — not because they’re greedy, but because they’ve been screwed by greedy banks and greedy corporations. Still, if you showed it back-to-back with Braff ’s “Garden State” and told viewers it came from the same artist, they’d never believe you. In fact, maybe they’d wish you were lying. When he made “Garden State” 14 years ago, Braff was then known as that mugging, lovable doctor from “Scrubs.” So he pulled a classic career move, making a movie that revealed he was a sensitive (though still quirky!) soul. The movie earned him untold

fans, but also untold enemies, who couldn’t stand a movie that featured both painfully sincere shilling for The Shins and a sight gag about a dude eating breakfast dressed like a medieval knight. Neither “sensitive” nor “quirky” describes “Going in Style.” It’s exactly what you’d expect from a movie in which three screen legends in their 70s and 80s stick up a bank. You probably wouldn’t even be surprised to learn they do it while wearing Rat Pack masks. Braff directs as though following a how-to manual. He conforms to every beat of the classic studio comedy, right down to a score that could be labeled “goofy geriatric bank
robber comedy music.” Apart from a disastrously conceived and staged set piece where our heroes try to rob the ingredients for chicken cordon bleu from a Bushwick supermarket, it’s a well-oiled machine, pausing for small bits of sentimentality here, cranking out a gag about three Oscar-winners debating “The Bachelorette” there. (And you thought Caine missing the ’87 Oscars because he was making “Jaws: The Revenge” was humiliating.) It tells you when to laugh, where to get angry, when to get teary and when to cheer. And when it’s over, you’ll forget Braff had anything to do with it. But maybe that’s for the best. MATT PRIGGE

The B’s celebrate earning their first playoff berth since 2014. GETTY IMAGES
THE BRUINS ARE BACK IN THE NHL PLAYOFFS, GET EXCITED
After missing the Stanley Cup playoffs the last two years, the Boston Bruins are back in the tournament. They clinched a playoff berth Tuesday night at the TD Garden, beating the Tampa Bay Lightning, 4-0, for their sixth straight win, for which, a minor celebration ensued. I’m all about a good celebration, whether it’s as a team or an individual achievement. But there’s also a time and a place for everything. Given how the last two seasons ended for the Bruins, I’d say Tuesday night’s clincher was something to celebrate. Now that the B’s are back in the playoffs, the next question is: “What type of playoff run will make this season a success?” For a handful of teams, the only answer
DANNY PICARD OPINION “The Danny Picard Show” airs every weekday at DannyPicard.com. Danny can also be heard on WEEI 93.7 FM. @dannypicard
is, “Winning the Stanley Cup.” A Stanley Cup Final appearance shouldn’t be good enough for these teams. They have to hoist
the Cup. If they don’t, then it’s not a success. That includes the Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks, to name a few. But not the Bruins. That’s not to say the B’s can’t make a sneaky run. They absolutely have the ability to be a dangerous underdog. With Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci being a major strength up the middle, Tuukka Rask playing some of his best hockey, and a recent commitment to team defense, the Bruins have all the pieces to make it interesting. But if they don’t, should we really be crushed? I know I won’t be. In fact, for this Bruins team, I’m just happy to see them with a spot in the tournament. I want to see young players like
David Pastrnak, Ryan Spooner, Noel Acciari, Brandon Carlo, and Colin Miller get a taste of playoff hockey. And who knows, if they can avoid a wild card and stay within the division for the firstround, then I’ll definitely give the Bruins a chance to beat the Ottawa Senators or Toronto Maple Leafs in a seven-game series. But again, if they don’t, my expectations are at a point where this year’s playoff berth makes me even more excited for next season. Add defenseman Charlie McAvoy to the mix in 2017-18, along with forward Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson (JFK), and maybe a backup goaltender that will be able to win more than one game through the first four months of the season, and we could be talking about
What’s next for the B’s? The Bruins will close out their 2016-17 regular season Saturday afternoon at TD Garden against Washington and will then rest up for the postseason. The Stanley Cup playoffs begin on Wednesday, April 12.
a Bruins team that wins the Atlantic division and is one of the favorites to win the Stanley Cup next summer. Look, I’m just trying to be realistic, based on everything I’ve seen all season long. For most of 2016-17, the Bruins dealt with an obvious talent issue, most notably on the blue line. Claude Julien took the fall for that defensive talent issue, which led to interim
coach Bruce Cassidy’s aggressive forecheck that lit a fire under the team’s behind. Eventually, even Cassidy admitted that they had to get back to defensive hockey. And during this crucial six-game win streak that’s put them back into the playoffs, that commitment to defense has paid off more than anything else. But will it last? Julien’s playoff teams proved you don’t need the most talented roster to win this time of year. All I’m telling you is, Cassidy’s playoff team next year will be more talented than this year’s roster. And that’s not a bad thing. For now, the Bruins are back in the playoffs. And that’s a great thing. As for what happens in the playoffs, I’m just happy they crashed the party.

Former Red Sox and current Cubs executive Theo Epstein was recently on Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take,” and the G.O.A.T. of baseball GMs told a great story about his negotiations with Schilling in 2003. “He’s always been unique,” Epstein said of Schilling. “We were negotiating back and forth. He had fired his agent. He was representing himself … I thought [myself and the Red Sox] were doing pretty well in the negotiations and we had reached a deal. We’re happy with it. And we go back to print [a contract] out in his little home office — and on his desk is a wellworn, dog-eared copy of the book, ‘Negotiating for Dummies.’ … Every time he was pretending to go to the bathroom he was running back and looking at that book.” According to WEEI .com, Schilling said the book was a joke gift from
‘WHAT IS A TIMBERWOLF?’ As a kid, I used to think it was weird listening to Patriots games in my parents’ car radio and seeing so many other cars on the road on a Sunday afternoon. “Why weren’t these people at home in front of their TVs?! It’s a friggin’ NFL Sunday! Why am I being dragged to my grandparents’ house!?” I’ve come to find out not everyone that th hat n ot e ot very ve ryon ry o on Boston in nB osto os to on an and d in this th his ccountry ount untry ry y is sports a sp spor orts ts ffan. a
his attorney. “The book was there absolutely,” Schilling wrote in a text message to the website. “But no, hate to burst the bubble, it wasn’t referenced [by me in negotiations].” Given that Schilling has basically reached Trump level on the B.S. gauge, I’m gonna go with Theo’s o’s version here.
So while some people laughed at the poor lady who lost $17,500 in Final Jeopardy the other night because
she failed to answer a simple sports question correctly, I instead felt for her. Because, damn, I’m a nice guy. Alex Trebek said, “This animal on this NBA team’s primary logo peaked about 75 million years ago.” The lady answered, “What is a Timberwolf ?” For those of you who are still stumped, “75 million years ago” indicates it’s a dinosaur. Second hint: This team plays in Toronto.

NOT READY FOR P PRIME RIME TIME TIME The bloom is off the rose when it comes to the Celtics, as LeBron and the Cavs eviscerated the C’s at TD Garden on Wednesday night. The Celts just aren’t in the class of a Cleveland, Golden State or San Antonio right now. But just because there
is a better chance of Vince Wilfork winning the Boston Marathon than there is of the Celtics capturing the Larry O’Brien Trophy this year, that doesn’t mean we should ignore the Celtics in the playoffs. This team needs to
show it is good enough to get out of not only the first round, but the second round. Toronto is decent, but there is no reason why the Celtics should not reach the Eastern Conference Finals this year. The playoffs start a week from Saturday.
IN LOVE WITH CHRIS SALE All apologies to Jon Lester and Josh Beckett, but until this week we haven’t had one pitcher who can generate legit buzz on the streets of Boston on the day that he’s pitching since the days of Pedro Martinez. Chris Sale is the man. His stuff is simply
electric and all of his starts the rest of the season will be must-see TV for Boston sports fans. Sale’s 96 mph fastball, his changeup and his ridiculous slider were all on target Wednesday night at Fenway in his Red Sox debut. Unlike David Price (there’s still
time for a turnaround, I suppose), this guy is a bona fide ace. Sale is next slated to pitch on Monday in Detroit against the Tigers (1:10 p.m., NESN) — and how’s this for an early season matchup? On the hill for the Tigers will be Justin Verlander.

Red Sox 2-0 heading into Detroit series The Sox will need the back end of their rotation to come up big. JOE PANTORNO @MetroBOS sports@metro.us
A shortened sweep of the Pirates has led the Red Sox to one of their first real tests of the regular season in the form of a four-game series against the Detroit Tigers, beginning on Friday afternoon (1 p.m., NESN). Expected to be one of the main competitors to the Cleveland Indians in the American League Central, the Tigers are bound to make plenty of noise with their bats this season. A deep lineup with plenty of power distributed among it is headlined by one of the greatest hitters of this generation in Miguel Cabrera. With a patient eye and an ability to hit to all portions of the field for power, the 33-year-old is poised to

record an eighth-straight season in which he’s batted over .300 with 18 home runs or more. He looks to have plenty of support this season with the likes of Ian Kinsler, Nick Castellanos, Vic-
tor Martinez and Justin Upton. Each of those bats are projected to add 20 to 30 home runs respectively and all but Upton hold the capability of batting over .280. The Red Sox certainly

Eduardo Rodriguez’s first opportunity to redeem himself after a 3-7/4.71 sophomore campaign. Turning 24 on Friday, the Venezuelan still has plenty of polishing to do, but could see a noticeable improvement if he can further develop an already-lively cutter. The big guns come in to end the series as Rick Porcello, who surrendered three runs in 6.1 innings against Pittsburgh, but still looked as good as he did during his Cy Young campaign last season gets

have the pitching to limit those bats, but it will be the bottom of the rotation that gets the first crack at Detroit. Steven Wright will look to make a seamless transition into 2017 after a year in which he garnered his first-ever AllStar appearance behind a 13-6 record and 3.33 ERA. The knuckleballer will take the mound against Michael Fulmer on Friday, the 2016 American League Rookie of the Year, who compiled an 11-7 record and 3.06 ERA. Saturday will bring

the ball on Sunday. Chris Sale will make his second start of the year on Monday afternoon. Obviously it’s early, but the Red Sox offense has looked inconsistent over its first two games. It was none more obvious than in Wednesday night’s extra-inning victory as they couldn’t figure out Jameson Taillon. It was Sandy Leon who provided the heroics in the 12th inning, which was only fitting seeing as he’s been Boston’s most consistent bat. Through the first two games of the year, the catcher with a .260 career batting average has five hits in his first eight at bats. Besides the opposing pitcher, health has done plenty to slow the Sox down. Some of their offensive struggles could be attributed to a flu bug that has swept through the clubhouse. It already sidelined Mookie Betts, Brock Holt and Robbie Ross Jr. while quarantining Mitch Moreland for three days last week. After Fulmer, Boston will face veteran Jordan Zimmerman and promising youngster Daniel Norris before a Monday date with Justin Verlander, setting up a tasty matchup against Sale in the series finale.
