SHOOTING AT SOUTHERN TILLERSON FACES TOUGH ROOF PLEADS GUILTY TO TALKS IN MOSCOW CALIFORNIA SCHOOL STATE MURDER CHARGES

1

At least two adults were killed and two other persons, possibly students, were struck by gunfire in a classroom shooting at a Southern California elementary school, police and fire officials said. San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said the shooting at Northpark Elementary School in San Bernardino, about 65 miles east of Los Angeles, appeared to a “murder-suicide,” but details were sketchy. “Two adults are deceased

in a classroom,” the chief said in a Twitter post, adding, “There are two wounded, possible students,” who were taken to hospitals. He said their conditions were not immediately known. “We believe the suspect is down, and there’s no further threat,” Burguan said. Authorities did not immediately furnish additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, or the identity and motive of the shooter. REUTERS

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s visit to Moscow this week will be an early test of whether the Trump administration can use any momentum generated by a missile attack on a Syrian air base to craft and execute a strategy to end the Syrian war. Even before Trump ordered last week’s strike in retaliation for a nerve gas attack, Tillerson’s visit was certain to be dominated by

thorny issues, including Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election, an apparent violation of an important arms control treaty, and seeing what cooperation, if any, is possible in the fight against Islamic State. Now, Tillerson, a former oil executive with no diplomatic experience, is charged with avoiding a major U.S. confrontation with Russia while exacting some concessions from Moscow. REUTERS

The white supremacist sentenced to death in federal court for the 2015 shooting massacre at a historic black church in South Carolina pleaded guilty to separate state murder charges. Dylann Roof, 23, was charged in state court with murdering nine African-American parishioners as they closed their eyes in prayer at a Bible study session. Roof agreed to plead guilty in state court under a deal with prosecutors after

being convicted of 33 federal crimes, including hate crimes and obstruction of religion resulting in death. In January, a jury found he deserved the death penalty. Pleading guilty to the state charges allows for Roof’s transfer to death row and spares survivors and relatives of the victims a second round of testimony. REUTERS

ILLINOIS JUDGE FATALLY SHOT OUTSIDE HOME

An Illinois judge was shot and killed outside his Chicago home on Monday and a woman was injured in the incident, police said. Raymond Myles, 66, was found shot multiple times by police responding to a report of gunfire at the address on the city’s South Side, according to the Chicago Police Department. Myles was an associate judge in Cook County Circuit Court’s Criminal Division, according to the court’s

website. Cook County includes Chicago, the third-largest city in the United States. The incident started when a woman exited the home and encountered a man with a gun, Chief of Detectives Melissa Staples said at a news conference. Words were exchanged by the two before the man fired, hitting the woman once. Hearing the gunshots, Myles exited the residence to investigate and was fatally shot multiple times. REUTERS

Eyes off that phone: New app rewards distractionfree driving The Mojo, created by Boston startup TrueMotion, lets a driver win points and possibly prizes for keeping hands on the wheel and off the phone. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

kristin.toussaint@metro.us

Have you ever looked at your phone while driving? For an overwhelming majority of people, the answer is yes. That kind of distracted driving contributed to 3,400 deaths on the road and nearly 400,000 injuries, according to a 2015 report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Whether it is talking or texting on the phone, scrolling through the news or adjusting a map navigator, few people can avoid the dangerous but tempting proposition while hurtling down the open road. But what if there was an app that rewarded drivers for staying off their mobile devices? That’s the concept behind Mojo, a smartphone application developed by TrueMotion, a Boston-based startup. The app awards drivers virtual points, which can turn into actual gifts for “distractionfree” driving. Rafi Finegold, vice president of product at TrueMotion, thinks the app provides a fun incentive for drivers to put the phone down. He acknowledges that it’s no easy task. “Distracted driving has that unfortunate psychological loop,” he said. “You do it a few times and get away with

it, so it provides a kind of reinforcement, ‘I did it that time and here I am, I’ll do it again.’” Using technology to curb distracted driving isn’t new, and even some insurance companies have separate devices to track a driver’s habits. Some apps on the market even can block text messages or calls, but Finegold said those punish a driver while not getting to the root of the impulse to check a phone. Mojo keeps a “laser focus on distracted driving” and nothing else, he said. It doesn’t block other applications and it won’t track speeding or sudden braking. Once downloaded for free, Mojo can run in the background, de-

tecting movements and identifying patterns. After the app automatically recognizes when the user is driving a vehicle, it collects data on how often that person interacts with the phone while driving. At the end of the trip, Mojo awards a score. Each minute of distraction-free driving counts as 1 point. When a driver collects 300 points, he or she can spin a virtual “prize wheel” for a chance to win. For now, TrueMotion is offering $5 Amazon gift cards. The startup is hoping to partner with other companies for more potential prize options.

Although the global war on terrorism continues as a long-running military campaign, a group of Philadelphians aim to create a memorial for those who have lost their lives fighting terrorists. “I would just like it to be a tribute to the service members and their families, said Dave Henderson, president of the Pennsylvania Global War on Terrorism Memorial’s board and a native of the Roxborough/Manayunk area. “I would like a place for the families to pay tribute, to grieve, and to be able to memorialize the service of the soldiers. Henderson is a West Point graduate who served two tours, one in Afghanistan and one in Mosul. After he returned home from Afghanistan, he recalled talking about the idea of a memorial for this war’s soldiers with fellow vets in 2014 for the families who supported soldiers through multiple rotations. “For this war; a lot of families knew the service members going over for a year, coming home for nine months or a year, and then they’re going right back, Henderson said. “That’s what happened for a long time until maybe 2010 when the drawdown started. Every soldier lost friends, Henderson said, adding that he knows a Pennsylvania National Guard soldier who was

traveling in a van with a unit of five when they were attacked. Three were killed, and one survived but was so severely injured he had to have half his brain removed. The memorial is still in the fundraising stages and a design is not finalized, although Henderson said they intend to incorporate into its design the names of the 288 Pennsylvania soldiers who died around the world as part of this conflict. Separate plans are also in the works for a national memorial to the Global War on Terrorism, which would be sited on the National Mall in Washington, but that process takes quite a bit longer. Andrew Brennan, founder and executive director of the Global War on Terrorism Foundation, said he hopes to see the national memorial installed in 2024. Federal legislation was introduced recently to make that vision a reality. “We have no issues with anybody wanting to build local memorials to honor the service and sacrifices of folks who have been doing this work over the past 15 to 16 years,â€? Brennan said. “There are memorials for World War II all over the United States.â€? Supporters of the Philadelphia memorial need to raise about $250,000, Henderson said. He is hoping to open the memorial near Penn’s Landing, on the same section of Front Street that features Philadelphia’s Vietnam and Korean war memorials. “We have a lot of work to do still,â€? he said, “but we hope to bring credit to those lives and the families who have sacrificed so much for our country.â€?

3-D printed titanium Alabama governor resigns over sex scandal to shave millions in Boeing Dreamliner costs The Alabama Ethics Commission last week found Gov. Bentley probably violated ethics and campaign finance laws, and said it would refer its findings to prosecutors.

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley resigned on Monday as a legislative panel suspended a hearing that could have led to his impeachment on accusations stemming from his relationship with a former adviser, a state representative said. Lieutenant Governor Kay Ivey will replace Bentley, 74, Alabama House Representative Ed Henry told reporters. Henry is the vice chairman of the house ethics and campaign finance committee, which issued the report saying the governor prob-

ably violated the law. The Alabama House Judiciary Committee suspended hearings that began on Monday into alleged campaign finance and ethics violations stemming from his relationship with Rebekah Mason, a senior adviser who later resigned. Bentley was charged with two misdemeanors related to campaign finance violations, Major Jon Briggs of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said. Bentley was booked into the Montgomery County Jail at 3:43 p.m. CDT and paid a $300 bond on each charge, Briggs said in a telephone interview. A report released by a state ethics panel accused Bentley of ordering law enforcement officers to track down copies of an embarrassing recording that suggested he had had an affair with Mason.

Robert Bentley GETTY IMAGES

It also accused him of retaliating against an official who discovered the relationship. Bentley has denied having a physical relationship with Mason, who is married. He had repeatedly vowed not to resign, saying he had done nothing illegal. During the hearing on Monday, the committee’s counsel said that Bentley told several top aides that “what happens in the governor’s office stays in the governor’s office,” regarding allegations regarding his relationship with Mason. Boeing Co. hired Norsk Titanium AS to print the first structural titanium parts for its 787 Dreamliner, the Norwegian 3-D printing company said on Monday, paving the way to a cost savings of $2 million to $3 million for each plane. The contract is a major step in Boeing’s effort to cut the cost of its barely profitable 787 and a sign of growing industrial acceptance of the durability of 3-D printed metal parts, allowing them to replace pieces made with more expensive traditional manufacturing in demanding aerospace applications. Strong, lightweight titanium alloy is seven times more costly than aluminum, and accounts for about $17 million of the cost of a $265 million Dreamliner, industry.

GETTY IMAGES

Boeing has been trying to reduce titanium costs on the 787, which requires more of the metal than other models because of its carbon-fiber composite fuselage and wings. Titanium also is used extensively on Airbus Group SE’s rival A350 jet. “This means $2 million to $3 million in savings for each Dreamliner, at least,” starting in 2018 when many more parts are being printed, Chip Yates, Norsk Titanium’s vice president of marketing, said in an interview. Boeing declined to

comment on the estimate but said Norsk’s technology would help reduce costs. The aircraft maker in February said it had hired privately held Oxford Performance Materials to print plastic parts for its Starliner spacecraft. Norsk worked with Boeing for more than a year to design four 787 parts and obtain Federal Aviation Administration certification for them, Yates said. Norsk expects the U.S. regulatory agency will approve the material properties and production process for the parts later this year, which would “open up the floodgates” and allow Norsk to print thousands of different parts for each Dreamliner, without each part requiring separate FAA approval, Yates said. Librarians asked to pull Cosby books after sex assault charges Bill Cosby’s “Little Bill children’s book series landed on a list of the 10 books Americans most often asked librarians to remove from shelves last year after he faced sex assault charges, according to a ranking released on Monday. The popular series written by Cosby and illustrated by Varnette Honeywood made its debut in ninth place on the American Library Association’s (ALA) annual list of the books that are most often challenged in libraries. “This children’s book series was challenged because of criminal sexual allegations against the author, the nation’s oldest library organization said on its website. More than 50 women have accused Cosby of sexual assault in a series of alleged attacks dating back to the 1960s. Most of the claims are too old to be the subject of criminal prosecution, but

Bill Cosb. GETTY IMAGES

Cosby, 79, is due to go on trial in June for charges made in Pennsylvania. The “Little Bill series was the subject of some of the 323 challenges to books reported to the ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom. The once-heralded children’s series includes three titles selected by Oprah Winfrey for her

influential book club, including “The Meanest Thing to Say, “The Treasure Hunt and “The Best Way to Play. The most challenged book for 2016 was “This One Summer, a young adult graphic novel written by Mariko Tamaki and illustrated by Jillian Tamaki. It won two prestigious prizes — a Printz and a Caldecott Honor Award — but was banned from some library shelves because of lesbian, bisexual, gay or transgender characters, profanity and was considered sexually explicit, the ALA said. Another Cosby book, his autobiography “Childhood, is the subject of a court battle in his case, with prosecutors seeking to introduce as evidence excerpts which they say show his willingness to use intoxicants to incapacitate women before assaulting them. For survivors of past Syrian gassing, new attack brings back horror and despair The attack was the first time Western countries say Syrian President Bashar al-Assad used the banned nerve gas sarin since the attack four years ago.

It’s the dead children that still haunt Abu Ghassan, who was blinded for more than a month and paralysed for weeks by a nerve gas attack four years ago in a Damascus suburb. He recovered; 37 members of his fam-

ic effects of both were dramatic. Four years ago, the United States nearly bombed the Syrian government, only to pull back when Assad agreed to give up his chemical arsenal and submit to U.N. inspections. After last week’s attack, President Donald Trump fired U.S. cruise missiles at Syrian government targets for the first time. Survivors of the Ghouta attack four years ago never lost the fear they could be gassed again at any moment, said Amer Zaydan, a 28-yearold school director from another part of eastern Ghouta. The new strike hammered it home. “After the Khan Sheikhoun massacre, we’ve gone back to that first moment, as if we are the ones who went through it,” he said. “The people here are terrified.” Since last week’s attack — which like those four years ago came just before dawn when the wind is the calmest and poison gas most effective — residents have activated a night watch, staying up to warn others in case of another attack. Zaydan recalls seeing hundreds of dead people before falling unconscious himself as he tried to help victims. He was blinded for days. “It was like the end of days.” “I don’t know what happened to the child I was holding at the time,” said Zaydan. Seven members of his family were killed. One of his cousins, presumed dead, was being prepared for burial when it was discovered he was still alive. “We have not forgotten this thing. It cannot be forgotten, when you see hundreds of people

dying, it’s a scene that cannot possibly be forgotten,” he said. “You walk through a district, you remember that here an entire family died, or here an entire district died.” Abu Ghassan in Ain Tarma also lives with the constant fear of another strike. He says he was saved only by his military training, covering his face with a wet shirt when he first sensed the poison, while none of the friends he was with survived. Since then, he has always kept cloth and vinegar to hand in case of another attack. Pieces of a rocket that bore the poison still litter the rubble-strewn floor of the apartment that it struck. Some parts were taken by U.N. inspectors, but the rest was kept in case it can one day be used in a war crimes tribunal, Abu Ghassan said. Residents have returned to live in most of the apartment block. Abu Ghassan remembers returning home to the sight of dead birds and chickens in the street by the house. Today, Syrian government forces are in a much stronger position than they were four years ago, and the oppositionheld areas are even more vulnerable. The western Ghouta, where one of the strikes hit, is now under government control. The eastern Ghouta, where two towns were hit, has been effectively under siege for years and more vulnerable than ever, say doctors, who have never been able to replenish supplies of atropine, the medicine used to treat nerve gas patients. United Airlines staff drags passenger from overbooked flight A doctor trying to return home to his patients was dragged by his hands from an overbooked United Airlines flight, according to social media. Passengers took to Twitter to express their anger over the forceful removal of the passenger from United Flight 3411, which was en route from Chicago to Louisville, Kentucky, on Sunday. Video of the incident posted to Twitter account @Tyler_Bridges shows three security officers huddling over the seated passenger, before dragging him on the floor. United said in a statement provided to some media outlets that the flight was overbooked. “After our team looked for volunteers, one customer refused to

leave the aircraft voluntarily,” United spokesman Charlie Hobart said. “We apologize for the overbook situation.” In Bridges’ video, a woman can be heard asking “Can’t they rent a car for the pilots and have them drive?” before two of the uniformed men reach into the passenger’s seat and yank him from his chair. The passenger screams as he is dragged on his back by his hands, glasses askew and shirt pulled up above his navel. Another video shows him, still disheveled from the altercation, returning to the cabin, running to the back of the plane and repeating, “I have to go home.” Fellow passenger Jayse D. Past cyber attacks on scores of organizations around the world were conducted with topsecret hacking tools that were exposed recently by the web publisher Wikileaks, the security researcher Symantec Corp. said. That means the attacks were likely conducted by the Central Intelligence Agency. The files posted by WikiLeaks appear to show internal CIA discussions of various tools for hacking into phones, computers and other electronic gear, along with programming code for some of them, and multiple people familiar with the matter have told Reuters that the documents came from the CIA or its contractors. Symantec said it had connected at least 40 attacks in 16 countries to the tools obtained by WikiLeaks, though it followed company policy by not formally blaming the CIA. The CIA has not confirmed the Wikileaks documents are genuine. But agency spokeswoman Heather Fritz Horniak said that any WikiLeaks disclosures aimed at damaging the intelligence community

Symantec didn’t formally blame the CIA for the hacks. GETTY IMAGES

“not only jeopardize U.S. personnel and operations, but also equip our adversaries with tools and information to do us harm. â€œIt is important to note that CIA is legally prohibited from conducting electronic surveillance targeting individuals here at home, including our fellow Americans, and CIA does not do so,â€? Horniak said. She declined to comment on the specifics of Symantec’s research. The CIA tools described by Wikileaks do not involve mass surveillance, and all of the targets were government entities or had legitimate national security value for other reasons, Symantec researcher Eric Chien said ahead of Monday’s publication.Â

In part because some of the targets are U.S. allies in Europe, “there are organizations in there that people would be surprised were targets,â€? Chien said. Symantec said sectors targeted by operations employing the tools included financial, telecommunications, energy, aerospace, information technology, education and natural resources. Besides Europe, countries were hit in the Middle East, Asia and Africa. One computer was infected in the United States in what was likely an accident — the infection was removed within hours. All the programs were used to open back doors, collect and remove copies of files, rather than to destroy anything. REUTERS

Is Brad Pitt dating Sienna Miller now? As you know, Brad Pitt has recently returned to his peak form. Maybe he’s working out his recent deluge of post-divorce emotions through intense cardio! And now? He might be flirting intensely with Sienna Miller — when he’s not overcome with intense melancholy about the dissolution of his marriage. Fun! Page Six reports that the almost-divorced 53-year-old was doing some “serious flirting” with Miller, 35, during a private dinner for “The Lost City of Z.” Miller stars in the film, and Pitt is a producer.

Ryan Phillippe wouldn’t deign to date Katy Perry

Spies — I’m picturing some characters dressed in the finest World War II-era garb — claim the pair were heavily enjoying each other’s company, and were talking to each other all night. Sounds like pretty standard behavior, but OK! Miller shot down rumors in 2015 that she was flirting with the then-married Pitt, saying, “You know, he’s the producer of the film and I’ve met him twice. It’s insane.”

Maybe third time’s the charm, eh? But like, probably not. Brad Pitt is way too sad right now to be flirting with young starlets all willynilly.

Considering it was very clearly a rebound relationship, it lasted for quite a long time. The pop diva was linked to Tanaka after her messy AF split from fiancé James Packer. Tanaka, 33, spent a great deal of time telling everyone that the pair was destined to be. I bet he feels great about that now. According to TMZ, Tanaka was essentially a gold digger brimming with jealousy. Gold digger? Probably. I don’t know why he would feel jealous, but I guess Carey’s people gotta spin it somehow. “Bryan had unbridled fury over

Halle Berry shares heartwarming photo of half of her son

Halle Berry shared a candid photo of the back of her son’s head, and it’s really beautiful. The 50-year-old posted a picture of 3-year-old Maceo in rumpled white pajamas staring serenely into the ocean through a window. I’m going to be honest: the photo is art-directed really well. Berry has been pretty vigilant about protecting her children’s privacy, saying “I’m not at all ashamed of my children. I try to find creative ways to incorporate them into my feed because they are the biggest part of my life, but I also work very hard to keep their identities as private as I

Bill Nighy hates watching Bill Nighy The “Their Finest actor never sees most of the movies he’s been in.

Billy Mack returns I did want to ask about perhaps your most famous role, “Love Actually’s Billy Mack, which you recent reprised for the Red Nose Day reunion short. How was it getting back into character after some 14 years? I can still get into the trousers; that was a relief. I had to wear some chains and some very odd kind of jewelry, which was unsettling. I wear a bright, white, fake snakeskin leather blouson underneath a full-length animal skin coat. And I’ve got these shoes. The shoes are bizarre. In fact, the shoes are a tribute to Johnny Depp. They have the word “Libertine written on each sole. And they’re electric blue. They’re massive; they’re like furniture. I don’t know what you’d ever wear them with; I don’t know where you’d wear them. But you can actually bid for them on auction. You could be the lucky person who owns these shoes.

MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

In person, Bill Nighy is the embodiment of dry English self-deprecation. But he’s not always like that onscreen. There’s Billy Mack, of course, his star-making, movie-stealing turn in “Love Actually,â€? whose short film reunion officially airs in the U.S. on May 25 as part of Red Nose Day. (It’s already shown in the U.K.) And there’s Ambrose Hilliard, his character in “Their Finest.â€? The new English drama looks at the propaganda films made during World War II, specifically a fictitious one meant to drum up morale as England was routinely blitzed. Nighy’s Ambrose is an aging, fading yet still fatuous movie idol who finds himself starring in a film about a subject far more important than his ego. But again, the real Nighy, 67, is the opposite of egomaniacal. Have you seen this ďŹ lm yet?

All actors come out of ADR reeling, thinking, “Oh my God, I’ve got to do something else for a living.â€? Not the least because it’s before the film has been color-graded, so everyone looks their ab-

solute worst. And then there’s the acting. You can’t stand the acting. It’s not so much the way I look or sound; it’s the acting I can’t recover from. There’s little bits of cowardice only I see. And there’s that thing I always do as a default when I can’t pull something off. It occurred to me recently that maybe that thing, which I find so shaming, is probably something members of the audience think, “Oh, it’s that thing, we

How to direct your own mom Charlie McDowell talks about making “The Discovery with some legends, including Robert Redford. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Charlie McDowell is Hollywood royalty — the son of Mary Steenburgen and Malcolm McDowell. But he’s no rich kid cashing in on his parents’ success. He’s worked hard, and he’s co-written and directed two films that show he has a real, uncompromising voice. “The One I Love, starring Elisabeth Moss and Mark Duplass, is a brutally honest (and funny) look at relationships. His latest film, “The Discovery, is about death. Robert Redford plays a physicist who claims he’s scientifically proven the existence of an afterlife. Still, he had to direct the Sundance Kid. “I honestly didn’t treat Redford any differently than anyone else, even though he’s such a godlike figure to me, McDowell says. “It would have been a disservice to him if I thought about that too

much. “The Discovery offers a very different Redford than we’ve seen. At first he seems grandfatherly, but we quickly learn he’s unstable, maybe even dangerous.

“I thought it would be really interesting to see darker sides to Redford’s performance, he says. “It shows that Bob at 80 years old is still trying new things. Another legend McDowell found himself directing was his mom. Steenburgen has only one scene, and he didn’t want to treat her any differently either. “I had to tell myself, ‘OK, you can’t get too into the idea that you’re directing your mom,’ McDowell recalls. “But I did call her ‘Mom’ when I went up to give her direction. It would h a v e been very weird to call her ‘Mary.’ It was totally my mom. GETTY

But Pizza Dads, the newest pizza shop from the minds behind Pizza Brain, rolled into Brewerytown April 1 on 29th and Girard, taking a central storefront location that could make it a crown jewel of the rapidly developing neighborhood. “We’re almost like a joke in Brewerytown that kept getting funnier over time, said Joe Hunter, head chef of Pizza Brain and Pizza Dads, who also lives in the neighborhood. “And I’m so thankful we got to open like this on April Fools’ Day, because I knew how much of a joke it was. Word that the expansion of Fishtown’s famous Pizza Brain would show up in the former Hat Shoppe at 29th and Girard started circulating some three years ago. In the interval, rumors spread that it might never open. Now that Pizza Dads is finally here, Hunter is excited about the chance to do something different. He and fellow co-owners Michael Carter and Ryan Anderson wanted to do something different than

the original Pizza Brain, known for housing the world’s first pizza museum. “We thought, ‘People know us for our pizza,’ Hunter said. “This next place could just be a really great pizza shop. He said he was inspired by visiting popular neighborhood pizzerias around New Jersey and wanted to celebrate the concept of the old school East Coast pizza shop. “It’s the most American thing, like the scenes in ‘Daria’ when they go to hang out at the pizza shop, have a slice and a soda and are just chilling, he said. “That’s our culture and I want to celebrate that, the pizza

shop. With unpretentious laminate wood tables like a classic ’90s pizza joint and a geometric design aesthetic, Pizza Dads is like the comfy pizza parlor of your childhood, but with gourmet masters crafting pies in stonelined gas deck ovens. “We just wanted to create this ’70s vibe, Hunter said. “A place where you say, ‘Yo dad, give me some cheese from the back.’ Based on an ethos of doing one simple thing really well, Hunter said the menu at Pizza Dads has special touches like pizza slices with the flavors of an entire cheesesteak, and house-made

pizza sauce cooked up with fresh basil and oregano. Why the delays in opening? Like many business ventures, the project had its fair share of funding issues, delays in construction and headaches with licensing approvals, Hunter said. Pizza Brain’s cofounder Brian Dwyer also departed the company during that timeframe. Dwyer moved to Washington state where he is working on a documentary about his experiences treating his cancer-stricken son with cannabis oil. He has spoken about his division with his former partners in the past, saying rifts formed over the

future of the business and his focus on his son. But Dwyer said he wishes Pizza Dads all the best. “In a very indirect way, I’m honored by this second spot opening. I consider it a very loose homage, in a strange way. I am very much a dad, after all. And I will always love pizza, no matter where my feet may tread, he said from Washington. “I hope Brewerytown is going to hoist it up on its shoulders and celebrate it. Hunter said the partners just had different visions, including around expanding the business. “Brian left to pursue other interests, he said. “When we pursued the

Pizza Dads opportunity in 2014, he was really vocal that he did not want to be part of a new business. He was not interested. The shop’s name got changed along the way too, from the original idea, “Uncle Pizza Dads, because during the construction process in 2015, another pizzeria, Uncle Nick’s Pizza, opened up halfway down Girard Avenue. Uncle Nick’s owner Harry Saritsoglou said he didn’t know about plans for Pizza Dads when he opened his shop, but was happy to have them join the neighborhood. “I’d tell them good luck, and I hope we’re all successful, he said.

wellbeing Have your sweat sesh in the comfort of your own home, thanks to these online fitness options. ALL PHOTOS ISTOCK

Keep up your exercise routine without leaving the house. SHARON FEIEREISEN @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

Welcome to the world of online fitness. Whether you’re new to working out — and the thought of squatting and lunging in a room filled with three dozen svelte athleisurewearing pseudo-athletes is daunting — or you’re just too busy to make time to attend classes IRL, there are now a number of ways to sweat it out with some of the biggest names in the fitness industry without even having to leave your apartment. Better yet, you won’t be alone. Many of the fitness brands that have extended their reach via technology have built communities around their streaming workouts. Look up #TARealTime, for example, and you’ll find countless Tracy Anderson enthusiasts with dedicated Instagram pages to track their progress and encourage each other to keep up

with their workouts. With summer around the corner, there’s no better time to check out one of these accessible options, which will save you time and money and make it harder to find excuses to skip out on exercise.

Tracy Anderson $90 a month or $475 for six months Anderson was one of the first to enter this space, and she was the first to do it in a raw, unfiltered way (there’s literally just a camera set up in her studio filming her Master Class). A new Andersonled workout is uploaded every Wednesday — replacing the prior week’s — and includes her signature arm and floor movements as well as a separate dance cardio workout. There’s a weekly “trainer breakdown,” to make sure you’re doing the moves correctly as well as a separate beginner’s cardio workout. The cost is a bit steep, but remember that Anderson’s studio membership is $900 a month with a $1,500 initiation fee.

BBS TV $14.99 a month or $120 a year Unlike with Anderson, Body by Simone TV — launched by Simone de la Rue — is constantly adding to their library of workout videos, rather than swapping one for another. Each video is 20 minutes long,

MAKE HEALTHY YOUR NEW HAPPY and they’re designed to supplement one another. Included in the library are de la Rue’s signature cardio, ab, leg, trampoline and jump rope sequences.

BeFit YouTube Channel Free If you’re looking for a mix of workouts from a variety of celebrity fitness personalities — think Jillian Michaels and Billy Blanks Jr. — and if you’re on a budget, check out this near daily updated free fitness channel. Want to work out on the go? A selection of videos are optimized for mobile devices; choose between barre, HITT, yoga, cardio core and Krav Maga, all ranging from five to 35 minutes.

AKT On Demand $34.99 a month New subscribers get a 15-minute trainer consult before beginning an online workout with Kelly Ripa’s go-to trainer, Anna Kaiser. Your subscription gives you access to the entire AKT library of workouts — over 150 workouts and 1,500-plus minutes of content. AKT also offers live private training, nutrition sessions, program consultations and a 10-day workout calendar.

Crunch Live $9.99 a month or $90

a year For an affordable mix of styles and instructors, Crunch Live is a great option. The streaming service has more than 85 online videos inspired by Crunch Gym’s most popular classes ranging from total body boot camp and dance cardio, to Pilates, yoga and barre.

#NWCHURCH $80 a month It’s hard not to love Madonna’s bubbly former trainer Nicole Winhoffer. She’s upbeat, loves to whip her hair and clearly loves to move her body. Winhoffer follows in the footsteps of Anderson (who also trained Madonna), posting nonedited videos filmed directly in-studio as she teaches her sweaty classes. As for the class itself, it’s part toning, part dancecardio. A new hourlong workout is posted every Sunday and after two weeks disappears — meaning at any given time you have access to two sessions.

Physique57 $30 a month If you’re looking for a barre or Pilates-inspired workout, check out Physique57’s streaming options. They have more than 40 videos from 10 minutes to an hour each and cover strength training, cardio and restorative workouts (all workouts are

nonimpact). If you have a specific goal in mind, you’ll also be able to pick from two to 12week workout plans. Unlike Physique57’s in-studio classes, these can be done without equipment.

Peloton $1,995 for the bike and $39 a month for streaming Peloton is more of a commitment than the other streaming options because it requires purchasing a bike (though the one-time investment pales in comparison to the cost of regular SoulCycle or Flywheel classes). Use the at-home bike to ride along with live in-studio classes or a spinning workout from its on-demand library. Riders benefit from the bike’s real-time performance tracking — and from instructors giving them real-time shoutouts since this streaming is interactive.

Open the Door to a Healthier You!

DanceBody $12.99 a week, 34.99 a month or $419.88 a year Filmed in real time, new workouts are added each month. The growing library includes dance-inspired sweat sessions ranging from 10 to 90 minutes. While they’re not mandatory, DanceBody’s specifically designed equipment — like the Hex Mat and Dance Bands — do come in handy for the floor work and dance cardio portions.

TONY ROMO’S MOVE TO TV IS THE LATEST OF UNNECCESSARY COWBOYS HIRES THE SPORTS PROFESSOR

GLEN MACNOW @RealGlenMacnow

As an Eagles fan, I’ve long despised the NFL’s pro-Cowboy bias â€” from the Michael Irvin push-off era through those incriminating paparazzi shots of the league’s officiating director chumming with some healthylooking girls on Jerry Jones’ party bus. Nothing makes me fume like the retired Cowboys affirmative action program. That one offers high-visibility network jobs to veterans of the blue-andsilver whether they’re qualified or not. So Irvin, Emmitt Smith, Jimmy Johnson and Deion Sanders have all gotten to bark nonsense into your living room. And now, there’s Tony Romo. The Cowboys goofy-looking QB retired last week after a 13-season career in which he won two playoff games. He was immediately foisted into the No. 1 analyst’s chair  at CBS. Romo has never called a game, never relayed an insightful anecdote and never displayed

a sense of humor. That obviously did not hinder his ascension, however. He wasn’t even required to audition for the coveted job. This is wrong on several levels. As veteran broadcaster Bonnie Bernstein tweetstormed last week, Romo’s chat-andcut to the front of the analyst’s buffet line insults every hard-work-

that gig.â€? Perhaps you don’t care about this. Perhaps you’re just relieved that Romo’s skyrocketing means you’ll no longer have to decipher Phil Simms on Sunday afternoons. OK, fair enough. But consider what Romo gurgled about Cowboys owner Jerry Jones after the news

broke:  â€œI wish people would get a chance to see into his heart and the way he just loves this football team, loves his family and just loves the people that have done right by him. There’s not a more loyal guy you’ll ever meet.â€? Hmmm. Do you sense that spreading the gospel of good on old Jerry will be

among Romo’s agenda items? Grab me a barf bag. Facing a national audience as an Ateam broadcaster is challenging, in part, because fans study for moments of bias. Consider how many locals loathed Dan Dierdorf back in the day, or Cris Collinsworth. Joe Buck self-mockingly heads his Twitter account with, “I love all teams EXCEPT yours.â€? And now comes a guy who might as well have a blue star tattooed above each ear. When Romo’s overrated playing career was still viable, in 2013, a poll published in Forbes listed him among America’s 10 most-disliked athletes. Just 27 percent of respondents said Romo “appealedâ€? to them — four ticks higher than Mike Vick. I can’t imagine anything since that has prompted that flaccid number to rise. And I doubt it will help putting an untrained, monotone Romo before the critical eyes of a national audience. For me, none of this is likely to change my view of the guy. I’ll always remember him for my favorite game, his 44-6 loss in Philly back in 2008.

Flyers turning to kids of the future While there will be no playoffs for the Flyers this year, young players have emerged to refuel hope next season. ERIC GOLDSTEIN @EricEsponda sports@metro.us

Defenseman Sam Morin and recently signed Mike Vecchione, a forward, made their NHL debuts last Tuesday. During Sunday’s season finale, it was defenseman Robert Hagg’s turn, while rookie Anthony Stolarz started his fourth game in goal. Before Saturday’s game, Ivan Provorov, just 20 years old, was named the winner of the Barry Ashbee Trophy, which is given to the team’s outstanding defenseman. It was the second consecutive year that a rookie has received the award after Shayne Gostisbehere last season. Forward Travis Konecny, also 20, completed his first full season with the Flyers, and another first-year player, Jordan Weal, looked promising during his final 23 games. Both youngsters

exhibited strong prospects of developing into above-average twoway forwards thanks to strong forechecking capabilities and offensive composure. We haven’t even mentioned highly rated defensemen Travis Sanheim and Phillipe Myers, who are playing for the Phantoms and in juniors, respectively. Needless to say, the Flyers are stocked with talented young players on the rise, which is one of the few positive takeaways from a disappointing season. “We know we have a lot of young guys coming in,” Wayne Simmonds said. “We know that that will be a good thing.” At the top of the list is Provorov, who made the Flyers with a strong training camp, was the team’s No. 1 defenseman by midseason and averaged 20-plus minutes a night. He became the second rookie in franchise history to play in all 82 games during his rookie season. The first was Dmitry Yushkevich during the 1992-93 season. Yushkevich played 11 seasons in the NHL, but lasted only three with the Flyers before he was traded to the Toronto

Maple Leafs in 1995 for a trio of draft picks that turned into Dainius Zubrus, Jean-Marc Pelletier and Francis Larivee. Provorov also became the first Flyers rookie to lead the team in ice time with an average of 21:59 TOI. “Provy has had a very consistent season and playing on the back end that’s a big load,” Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said. With only five defensemen signed next year, the Flyers will have at least two openings. Expect Morin and Hagg to get at least one of those spots, if not both. With goalie Steve Mason set to test free agency, expect Stolarz to get a long look at the backup job behind Michal Neuvirth. And on offense, expect Konecny to improve while Vecchione and Weal should each get a full season with the Flyers. So while this season ended prematurely, it at least laid a lot of groundwork for the future. “It’s disappointing to be starting to think about year-end meetings right now, but that’s reality,” Hakstol said. “There is a lot of good mixed in, though, like growth and development.”

Aries Take pride in everything you do. Pay attention to detail and be consistent. You have plenty to gain if you are confident and informative. Avoid bad influences.

Libra Information you receive will spark you to make a sudden change in the way you deal with others and how you view yourself and the things you stand for.

Taurus Take on the role of instigator and get everyone around you fired up about something you want to see happen. Your enthusiasm will be contagious.

Scorpio An emotional plea will help you sort out differences you have with someone. Expressing your thoughts will help you live up to your standards and implement changes.

Gemini Deal with personal papers and any problems you face with government institutions. Taking care of business will help ease uncertainty and ongoing stress.

Sagittarius Question anyone asking for something that makes you uneasy. Avoid getting trapped by someone pressuring you to make a commitment.

Cancer Take time to evaluate and develop your ideas instead of rushing into something you know little about. Be a leader, not a follower.

Capricorn Too much of anything will turn into a bad thing. Keep moderation in mind and avoid anyone who is inconsistent or unreliable. Concentrate on your loved ones.

Leo You can bring about positive change. Taking responsibility and sticking to your plans will help you avoid getting into a disagreement. Honor your word.

Aquarius Weigh the pros and cons of any offer that comes your way. Someone will try to take advantage of you if you don’t ask questions and require changes.

Virgo A partnership that offers mental stimulation and promotes equality will encourage growth and bring change. Travel and educational pursuits are favored.

Pisces Don’t take a chance or forget the past when it comes to dealing with expenses, money matters or people who have caused problems or cost you financially. EUGENIA LAST
