US WEIGHS OPTIONS AFTER TOP US COURT TACKLES MCMASTER: TIME FOR TOUGH TALKS WITH RUSSIA N. KOREA MISSILE TEST RELIGIOUS RIGHTS

White House national security adviser H.R. McMaster said on Sunday it was time for tough talks with Russia over its support for Syria’s government and its “subversive” actions in Europe. Speaking on ABC News’ “This Week” program, McMaster said Russia’s backing of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government has perpetuated a civil war and created a crisis that has bled over into Iraq, neighboring
countries and Europe. “So Russia’s support for that kind of horrible regime, that is a party to that kind of a conflict, is something that has to be drawn into question as well as Russia’s subversive actions in Europe,” McMaster said. “And so I think it’s time though, now, to have those tough discussions Russia.” REUTERS

The U.S., its allies and China are working together on a range of responses to North Korea’s latest attempted ballistic missile test, President Donald Trump’s national security adviser said, citing what he called an international consensus to act. “We are working together with our allies and partners and with the Chinese leadership to develop a range of options,” national security adviser H.R.

McMaster said on “This Week.” “This latest missile test just fits into a pattern of provocative and destabilizing and threatening behavior on the part of the North Korean regime,” McMaster said. He said the president has asked the national security council to integrate the efforts of the Defense and State departments and U.S. intelligence agencies to develop options if “this pattern of behavior continues. The U.S. Supreme Court is set this week to hear a closely watched case testing the limits of religious rights, and new Justice Neil Gorsuch’s judicial record indicates he could tip the court toward siding with a church challenging Missouri’s ban on state funding of religious entities. Gorsuch, who embraced an expansive view of religious rights as a Colorado-based federal appeals court judge, on Monday hears his
first arguments since becoming a justice last week. He will be on the bench on Wednesday when the justices hear the Trinity Lutheran case, one of the most important of their current term. Gorsuch, appointed by President Donald Trump, restored the Supreme Court’s 5-4 conservative majority. REUTERS

TURKEY’S ERDOGAN DECLARES VICTORY

President Tayyip Erdogan declared victory in a referendum on Sunday to grant him sweeping powers in the biggest overhaul of modern Turkish politics, but opponents said the vote was marred by irregularities and they would challenge its result. Turkey’s mainly Kurdish southeast and its three main cities, including the capital Ankara and the largest city Istanbul, looked set to vote “no” after a bitter and
divisive campaign. Erdogan said 25 million people had supported the proposal to replace Turkey’s parliamentary system with an all-powerful presidency, giving the “yes” camp 51.5 percent of the vote. That appeared short of the decisive victory for which he and the ruling AK Party had aggressively campaigned. Nevertheless, thousands of flag-waving supporters rallied in Ankara and Istanbul in celebration. REUTERS

Over half a million spectators are expected to turn out somewhere along the 121st Boston Marathon route on Marathon Monday to cheer on racers. Though the Boston Athletic Association says there’s ample room along each and every mile of the 26.2-mile course, it pointed out a few of the more famous spots to watch — Wellesley Scream Tunnel just before the halfway, Heartbreak Hill in Newton around Boston College and (of course) the final stretch on Boylston Street right leading up to the finish line. Boston Marathon will retire bib number worn by trailblazing runner Kathrine Switzer Boston Marathon bib No. 261 has been imbued with meaning since Kathrine Switzer wore it in 1967, when she became the first woman to be officially registered and run in the race. Now, the same year that the trailblazing Switzer is again running in the Boston Marathon, the number will be officially retired. The Boston Athletic Association announced the honor on Thursday. It is a long way from Switzer’s first run 50 years ago, when an angry race official attempted to rip the number off her shirt. Switzer had registered for the marathon not with her first name but with her initials, which kept her gender hidden from marathon officials. Women were not allowed to run in the Boston Marathon then, and weren’t officially allowed into the race until 1972. Switzer wasn’t technically the first woman to run the Boston Marathon,

nonprofit that brings together women runners. This year is the 121st Boston Marathon, and in its history, the association has only retired one other number, according to the Associated Press. That was No. 61, honor long-distance runner John Kelley, who ran 61 Boston Marathons. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT

New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez has been cleared of murdering two men outside a Boston nightclub in 2012, but prosecutors said the victims’ families are somewhat relieved that he won’t be freed from prison. Hernandez is still serving a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing an acquaintance in an industrial park near his home in June 2013. His attorneys have appealed for a new trial in that case. An appeal cannot challenge the decision of the jury to convict Hernandez. It must cite errors committed by the judge in his rulings during the trial. First-degree murder convictions, such as the case of Hernandez, are rarely overturned upon appeal. On Friday, a Boston jury declared Hernandez not guilty of the 2012 double murder of Safiro Furtado and Daniel Abreu is a case that was primarily based on the testimony of Alexander

Gasps were heard from the gallery when the initial verdicts were read, and members of the victims’ families were led out of the courtroom, also in tears. “What won this case was a dearth of evidence that connected Hernandez to these shootings, Ron Sullivan, a member
of his defense team, told reporters after the verdicts. Dan Conley, district attorney of Suffolk County, said the notguilty verdicts show the difficulty of solving a drive-by shooting. “Our theory of this case stands, he told reporters, “It points inescapably to Hernandez. REUTERS AND METRO STAFF

Selena Gomez and The Weeknd’s Coachella PDA is a lot PDA is the only way to prove that you care about someone. Especially if there are paparazzi around. So Selena Gomez and The Weeknd went to Coachella to go make out. Duh! And the kids went wild: The snap has already garnered 5.3 million likes, which, to be honest, is excessive. “She wants the world to know they’re together,” a source tells Us Weekly. “She only does that when she’s really dating someone.” You mean, she only wants people to know she’s with someone when … she’s with someone? The 35-year-old and her boyfriend were spending some time together in Malibu, which doesn’t seem particularly exciting, but maybe visiting Malibu is their version of kink. More importantly, you’re probably wondering: Who even is Sam Asghari? Same. Here’s what we know about the former Mousketeer’s mystery dude.
Allow Janet Jackson to assure you: Despite all of this divorce drama, everything is A-OK. The pop icon, who is in the process of divorcing her third husband, took to Twitter to share a photo of her and her 3-monthold son, Eissa Al Mana. I can exclusively confirm, right here and right now, that he is a very good looking baby. Kind of reeks of an attempted misdirection, doesn’t it? I mean, this picture is the first time the 50-year-old has posted to Twitter since November of last year. Is Jackson trying to change the conversation? If so, her soon to be ex-husband, Wissam Al Mana, is totally in on it. According to E! On-

Britney’s new beau is just 23. ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES UNLESS STATED OTHERWISE
He’s 23 years young. In March, the pair celebrated Asghari’s 23rd birthday with a scenic hike and an Instagram picture. This appears to kind of be their thing. He wrote his number on a piece of paper instead of using his phone. Adorable. “I was like …’ This guy was really cute!’ so then I called him.” OK!

really cute. Asghari moved to California from Iran nine years ago, and his face is really inoffensive to look at. He’s got that classic combination of being young, tall, dark and handsome which is definitely not horrible. Also he works as a personal trainer slash fitness model slash token hot guy in women’s music videos, so. He’s kind of living the dream. This is definitely a win for Spears, and she deserves a win. Well done in catching yourself a hot, young thing, Spears. Not to be lame, but let’s hope this relationship is anything but “Toxic,” LOL.
Orlando Bloom, like Johnny Depp before him, has found a new hot young thing to suck the youth out of. Hooray? People reports that the two relatively attractive actors have decided this is the time to make the ill advised leap from friends to friends with benefits. A source — I’m assuming at this point it was Bloom’s 6-year-old son, Flynn — tells the magazine that Bloom, 40, and Nina Dobrev, 28, are definitely not exclusive or anything. “Recently they’ve been
hanging out as more than friends. It’s super casual.” Desperate to prove that this relationship is indeed of the super chill variety, the “Elizabethtown” actor was reportedly all over a model named Ashley Haas while Dobrev partied 15 feet away at a Coachella party on Friday. Because it’s not like, disrespectful. It’s just like, casual.
And he’s young and virile and definitely not past his prime, and he just needs everyone to know that, OK? Bloom most recently dated Katy Perry, and they were the kind of couple you try to avoid at all costs. Dobrev, former star of “The Vampire Diaries,” dated Ian Somerhalder, 38, for several years before splitting in 2013. So older dudes are kinda her thing. Oh, and by the way? “Elizabethtown” was a major flop and is one of the worst films I’ve ever seen.

You might know Gemma Arterton as a Bond girl. When she started out, the English actress appeared in blockbusters like “Quantum of Solace,” “Clash of the Titans,” “Prince of Persia,” even “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.” She doesn’t do those anymore. For the past five years, she’s turned herself from Hollywood’s next “It” girl into a serious and respected thespian who makes indies, in England and even in France. In fact, she just headlined George Bernard Shaw’s “Saint Joan” in London. This month, she’s staring in “Their Finest,” a docudrama that focuses on the English film indus-

She plays a screenwriter hired to pen the female dialogue for a propaganda film — not an evil propaganda film, like you’d see made by today’s American administration, but one meant to raise morale and inspire optimism among the English population as their country is blitzed by Axis powers.
The film they’re making in “The Finest” is kind of like, if you’ll allow the comparison, “Moonlight” meets “La La Land”: It’s socially conscious but it also wants to be mainstream entertainment. It’s what they say in the film: “authenticity infused with optimism.” You want people to feel something they can relate to, but is also optimistic.
It’s interesting how films come out and then an event will happen that makes it seem really relevant. I did this small film last year called “The Girl

It’s been a really good shift, though. I wasn’t very happy or at all fulfilled. It’s like when you have loads of crap in your room. You just throw it out, and then you can see clearer. That’s how I felt. I didn’t need all of that crap, and it wasn’t serving me. Now I can see properly and I’ve got space. It’s much better that way.

RuPaul: ‘Learning to love yourself is the most important thing’ Figuring out our personal motivations makes us human. LUCÍA HERNÁNDEZ MWN letters@metro.us
The world’s most famous and successful drag queen, RuPaul, premieres the eighth season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” on April 22 on VH1. He chats with us about the most concerning battle facing the LGBT community and how he stays centered in a world of Trump and division. How do you keep the show fresh? That’s thanks to the participants. They are really the soul of the program. With their energy and freshness, they are the ones that have kept the show in force all this time. It is very interesting to meet them because many come from small towns from the U.S., where they have had to fight their own battles and demonstrate that they can live on their own terms. So, when they arrive to the show, they’re superheroes and that’s what makes them special in my eyes. Do you remember any particular story? Yes, in this eighth season Kim Chini, the queen of Korea, talked about her problems in a very funny way, acting them out and that was a great moment.
RuPaul in and out of costume. ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES
Now we have many queens who are internet stars — that is, they know about makeup, costumes but they do not have experience on a catwalk, acting or live presentations. So watching them evolve into more complete artists is a lot of fun. The LGBT community continues to face many battles, which concerns you most? The same one that every human being faces, which is not a gay right but a human right, and that is why everyone must rise. Beyond laws, we w must discover that we have more in common with each other than what we believe. I believe b that the greatest t misunderstanding of human beings is believing that we are separated from one o another or that we are different from each other. We are a single entity, and people
What is “RuPaul’s Drag Race” about? The program brings together 12 of the best drag artists, who will have to go through countless extravagant and unpredictable challenges to demonstrate their charisma, uniqueness and talent. The crown is a cash prize of $10k and the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar,” in addition to achieving greater exposure and winning more fans.
forget that very easily and that is what hurts my heart. And if you think about it, it’s the same thing that hurts us all. We are not separate. What is the message you would like to convey to younger people? The same message I have had from the beginning: Learning to love yourself is the most important thing you can do in your life. Learn what you are, what makes you happy, what moves you, what motivates you to get out of bed and pursue it. What motivates me is love, laughter, beauty, dance, acting. Discovering those personal motivations is what makes us human. On April 22, the eighth season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” premieres on VH1 at 9 p.m.

HOW TO GET AHEAD LEARN ABOUT THE TOP CAREERS OF

The United States has a huge shortage in the expanding field. SARA FEINSTEIN @SaraBFeinstein
sara.feinstein@metro.us
Those who are interested in the human element of medical care and the emotional rewards that come from interacting with patients might want to consider a career in psychiatry. And that’s only one benefit of entering the field, which is slated to rapidly expand to meet the increase in demand for mentalhealth services. We spoke to Dr. Tristan Gorrindo, a practicing psychiatrist and the director of education at the American Psychiatric Association to find out more about the profession. What does a psychiatrist do?
Psychiatrists are physicians who work to treat disorders that affect the brain, says Gorrindo. “That can span the range from emotional related disorders all the way through substance abuse and other behavioral disorders,” he says. They make diagnoses and come up with treatment plans that can include talk therapy, medications or psychosocial interventions. What schooling do you need to become a psychiatrist? After completing their undergraduate program, prospective psychiatrists have to take the Medical College Admission Test, and then complete four years of medical school, says Gorrindo. Then comes a residency in psychiatry, which is a minimum of four years — and that’s only the beginning. “If they want to specialize in child psychiatry for example, that’s an additional two years, or addictions, that’s another year,” he says. “I used to tell my family that I was finally going

to graduate from 25th grade,” says Gorrindo. “It’s a long road, but a good road.” What’s the typical salary for a psychiatrist? The median annual salary for psychiatrist is $187,200 according to the most recent reports by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The best-paid 10 percent in the profession made $194,000, while the lowest-paid 10 percent made $61,3300. Is it hard to find
employment? “It turns out the United States has a huge shortage of psychiatrists, so it is not difficult at all to get a job after you complete your residency,” says Gorrindo. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the profession to grow 15 percent from 2014 to 2024, resulting in 4,200 new jobs. The pros According to Gorrindo, the best part of psychiatry is that “we still get
to spend a significant amount of time with our patients and really get to know them and their life story. “Many times you’re really connected to your patient for months, or even years, and so getting to see your patients get better, re-engage in the world and get their lives back on track is very rewarding,” he says. “It’s one of the things that I’m most grateful for.” The cons One of the biggest issues
psychiatrists face is the stigma surrounding mental illness, Gorrindo says. Not only does that keep people from seeking care, but it contributes to inequity in the healthcare system. “Sometimes insurance companies have special sets of rules for treating mental-health conditions that they don’t have for treating more traditional medical illnesses, so we’re constantly having to fight those kind of administrative battles.”

Heading back to home ice, can the Bruins take care of business at TD Garden and take a series lead?

Game 3: Bruins look to take back control as series shifts to Boston The Bruins and Senators are tied at one game apiece as the first round continues. RICH SLATE @Richslate
sports@metro.us
By winning Game 1 in Ottawa, 2-1 on Wednesday, the Bruins set themselves up in good position to win their first round playoff series versus the Senators. Of course, losing Game 2, particularly in the spectacular fashion that they did (blowing a two-goal third period lead and falling 4-3 in OT on Saturday), left Boston with a bad taste in their mouths
as they head back to TD Garden for the pivotal Game 3 on Monday (7, NESN) and Game 4 on Wednesday (7:30, NESN). Still either way, who thought that this would be an easy series? Both clubs are clearly very close in terms of talent level not to mention all the mounting injuries on each side, so it’s no wonder that it seems destined to go six or even seven games (that’ll probably almost all be decided by one or two goals at most). These are the first playoff games for interim head coach Bruce Cassidy in charge of the Bruins and if the first two tilts in Ottawa were any indication, his team
is in for a serious test from their Atlantic Division rival. “A team that’s behind, they’re at home, they’re desperate, they’re going to push hard and they did. We saw the same script on Wednesday [after the B’s trailed 1-0 but rallied for a pair of third period goals],” Cassidy said. “We did it to them. What’s disappointing is that we are generally pretty good at closing out games.” After a scoreless first period in Game 2, Boston scored three goals in the second period including a shorthanded goal by right wing Tim Schaller and a power-play goal by Patrice Bergeron that put them firmly in control
at 3-1 late in the frame. Ottawa was desperate as they couldn’t afford to leave town trailing 2-0 in the series, so defenseman Chris Wideman scored on a screened shot from

SEASONS SINCE BOSTON’S LAST PLAYOFF SERIES WIN, IN 2013-14 OVER DETROIT the point then center Derick Brassard tied it on a one-timer thanks to a slick spin move by their best player-defenseman Erik Karlsson. Senators captain Dion Phaneuf
ended it just 1:59 into the extra session, blasting one from the point, seconds after Boston had killed off a terrible penalty on its own captain Zdeno Chara (who was called for delay of game after putting the puck over the glass in his own end). It’s hard to fathom, but the Bruins have lost a defenseman in four straight games, dating back to the final two contests of the regular season. Torey Krug (lower-body) and Brandon Carlo (upper-body) have yet to appear in the series while Colin Miller (lower-body) got hurt in Game 1 on a nasty kneeto-knee hit and Adam McQuaid (upper-body)
departed early in Game 2 after blocking a shot. As you can imagine, this has left Boston’s defensive corps in tatters. Luckily for them, 19-year-old rookie Charlie McAvoy (who just a couple weeks ago was still playing for BU) has stepped in right away (paired with Chara, who is old enough to be his father) and looked like a dependable veteran which is slightly shocking. Carlo skated on Sunday but he was termed “day-to-day and doubtful for Game 3.” Boston doesn’t want to have to dip much further into the depths of their roster (or the Providence Bruins) after Joe Morrow played his first game on Saturday since Jan. 22.

Perhaps no single day in Boston is bigger and more important than Patriots’ Day, better known around these parts as Marathon Monday. While the historical aspect of the day in our nation’s history can’t be forgotten — the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord — the celebration is made by those making the 26.2 mile run from Hopkinton all the way to Boston’s Boylston Street. Consider it a 26.2 mile celebration of hard work, determination, perseverance and unity that not only describes the individuals in the race but the city they are racing in, especially after the bombings that occurred at the finish line in 2013. Whether it’s overcoming physical or emotional hurdles, running for a charity, or just simply reaching that “runner’s high,” there are plenty of reasons for the 30,000-
plus men and women to partake in the 121st Boston Marathon. And there are plenty of reasons to cheer them on from the sidelines, whether at the start, along the infamous Heartbreak Hill or down the stretch on Boylston Street. And this year, fans will be treated to a more competitive marathon. Last year, many of the top runners in the world didn’t run in the Boston Marathon due to the Rio Summer Olympics later in the year. That isn’t the case this time around, as many return to Boston in hopes of winning one of the most important marathons in the world, and $150,000.
Americans You know the name Meb Keflezighi. The American won the Boston Marathon back in 2014, becoming the first American since 1983 to do so. You can bet the 41-year-old will be a huge draw after his announcement that this will be his final competitive year of racing. Galen Rupp, on the other hand, is just starting out. The 30-yearold is making his Boston Marathon debut, coming off a bronze medal at
the Rio Olympics in the marathon (2:10:05). He looks to be America’s best bet to bring home a win. Will a nagging foot injury prevent it? And keep an eye on Jared Ward, who finished sixth in the Rio Olympics (2:11:30). Local favorite Shalane Flanagan had to withdraw from this year’s race due to a back injury. That’s a blow to the American women’s chances, but there are still a couple names to be on the lookout for. Jordan Hasay, just 25 years old, is making her Boston Marathon debut, and looking to make some noise, too. She just recently placed sixth in the Prague Half Marathon with a 67:55 time, third fastest ever by an American woman, according to the running website competitor.com. And Desi Linden should be a familiar name, as Linden finished second in the 2011 Boston Marathon and seventh in the Rio Olympics (2:26:08).
World Lemi Berhanu from Ethiopia is your defending champion after finishing last year’s race with a 2:12:45 time. But that time was actually the slowest winning time since 2007. When you consider many of the top racers skipped last year’s race, Berhanu will have to run faster this time around. Look for his fellow countryman Yemane Tsegaye, who finished third last year, near him. And you can always count on the Kenyans to compete. Wesley Korir, who won in 2012, will look to end Kenya’s firstplace drought. Atsede Baysa from Ethiopia looks to defend her crown after an impressive come-frombehind win last year. Fellow Ethiopian Buzunesh Deba, who was awarded the first-place honor in 2014 after Rita Jeptoo was banned for doping, holds the course record at 2:19:59. And again, there are many Kenyans with a chance to win, including 2015 winner Caroline Rotich.

Popular adds Hitter: Ryan Zimmerman, 1B, Washington Nationals Zimmerman has come flying out of the gate in 2017, hitting .341/.386/.659 with three homers in his first 11 games. After posting easily the worst season of his career last year, fantasy owners are clearly buying a resurgence. A closer look, however, suggests they should be a bit more skeptical. Zimmerman is enjoying some fortune on batted balls (.407 BABIP) and currently boasts a HR/FB% that is twice his career average. There’s been no real change in his approach or swing to support those numbers. Toss in the fact that he hasn’t played a full season since 2013 and is striking out more often than ever before, and the verdict is clear. Avoid. Pitcher: Kendall Graveman, SP, Oakland Athletics Graveman established himself as your typical innings eater last season, using a groundball-heavy approach and limiting walks enough to post serviceable numbers. He’s opened the season with a 2-0 record, 2.00 ERA, and 1.00 WHIP in three starts. Those are some nice, round numbers… but so is his strand rate, which currently checks in at 100%. Obviously, that’s unsustainable. Graveman is also benefiting from a .204 BABIP (career .290) despite allowing a higher rate of quality contact than ever before, and still

Popular drops Hitter: Byron Buxton, OF, Minnesota Twins So far this season, Buxton has come to the plate 42 times. He has struck out in exactly half of those opportunities, while walking once. He has only four hits — two singles and two doubles — and one stolen base. In short, this is exactly the kind of start nobody wanted to see from Buxton. The former top prospect is still just 23, but the contact issues that have plagued him at the big-league level don’t appear to have gone away. Owners in dynasty leagues should continue to be patient, but those in redraft formats can feel free to explore other options. Cut.
Pitcher: Matt Shoemaker, SP, Los Angeles Angels Shoemaker has a reputation for inconsistency, and he’s come by it honestly. He’s made 74 starts since the beginning of the 2014 season. 16 times, he’s allowed four or more runs. 15 times, he’s allowed zero. What makes Shoemaker such a volatile asset? Simple — he’s entirely reliant on his splitter. When it’s working, he is often dominant. When it’s not, he’s a batting-practice pitcher, prone to giving up home runs in bunches. He’s allowed four homers in 15 innings so far this season. Cut. Kyle Bishop is a lead MLB columnist at RotoBaller.com. metro.us/horoscopes Aries See each matter through to the end. Don’t rely on others to take care of your responsibilities. Stay focused on what’s important and be cautious about your health.
Libra Ask before you make changes at home that might not sit well with a partner or someone you live with. Getting the green light will help you avoid a setback.
Taurus Take the initiative and go after what you want. Don’t let anyone stop you from reaching your goals. Stick to your plan and finish what you start.
Scorpio Choose to put greater emphasis on personal pursuits, romance and relationships. The less communication with your colleagues, employer or institutions, the better.
Gemini Look at what you have, not at what you lack. It’s up to you to choose how to live. Don’t let others make choices for you. Do what makes you happy.
Sagittarius If you want to make changes, go about it the right way. If permission is required, seek it out first, and if you need more information, do your research.
Cancer Don’t worry about what others are doing. Stay focused on what’s important to you. Live in the moment and surround yourself with the things and people that matter.
Capricorn Say what’s on your mind and clear the air. You’ll feel better and will be free to move forward with your plans once you know you have nothing to hide.
Leo Get work out of the way before you tend to personal matters. Someone will pressure you if you make a promise without delivering on it.
Aquarius Don’t let temptation lead you down the wrong path. Be responsible, and if you really want to make a move or change, do so for the right reason.
Virgo Set high standards and live up to your promises. You have plenty to gain if you maintain a positive attitude and are open to unusual approaches.
Pisces Follow your intuition when dealing with your peers or negotiating a contract. Advancement can be yours if you ask for more responsibility. EUGENIA LAST
