A murder suspect who posted a video on Facebook of the killing of a Cleveland man fatally shot himself after a “brief pursuit” by Pennsylvania State Police officers. Officers found Stephens in Erie County, Pennsylvania, after getting a tip around 11 a.m. local time from a “concerned citizen” who saw Stephens at a McDonald’s, Major William Teper Jr. of the Pennsylvania State Police told a news conference.

Local media said an employee at the restaurant’s drive-through window called police. Stephens had left the restaurant but stopped briefly when officers located his car nearby. He sped away, and police then hit his car with their vehicle, causing him to lose control and spin out, at which point Stephens shot himself. REUTERS

President Donald Trump promised to defend American dairy farmers who have been hurt by Canada’s protectionist trade practices, during a visit to the cheese-making state of Wisconsin. Canada’s dairy sector is protected by high tariffs on imported products and controls on domestic production as a means of supporting prices that farmers receive. It is frequently criticized by other dairy-

producing countries. “We’re also going to stand up for our dairy farmers,” Trump said in Kenosha, Wisconsin. “Because in Canada some very unfair things have happened to our dairy farmers and others.” Trump did not go into detail about his concerns, but promised his administration would call the Canadian government, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and demand an explanation. British Prime Minister Theresa May called on Tuesday for an early election on June 8, saying she needed to strengthen her hand in divorce talks with the European Union by bolstering support for her Brexit plan. Standing outside her Downing Street office, May said she had been reluctant to ask parliament to back her move to bring forward the poll from 2020. But, after thinking “long and

hard” during a walking holiday, she decided it was necessary to try to stop the opposition “jeopardizing” her work on Brexit. Some were surprised by May’s move — the Conservative prime minister has repeatedly said she does not want to be distracted by campaigning — but opinion polls give her a strong lead. REUTERS

A gunman with an apparent dislike of white people and government killed three people in downtown Fresno, California, before he was taken into custody while shouting “Allahu Akhbar,” police said. The suspect, Kori Ali Muhammad, was also wanted in connection with the fatal shooting last week of an unarmed security guard at a Motel 6 in Fresno, Police Chief Jerry Dyer said. Muhammad fired

at least 16 rounds in less than a minute at four downtown Fresno locations at about 10:45 a.m. local time before he was spotted running through the streets by a police officer. “Immediately upon the individual seeing the officer he literally dove onto the ground and was taken into custody and as he was taken into custody he yelled out, ‘Allahu Akhbar,’” Dyer said. The term means “God is great” in Arabic. REUTERS

DNA evidence no savior of wrongfully convicted, Northeastern professor says DNA evidence has kept innocent people out of jail, but doesn’t exist in the vast majority of criminal cases.

DNA evidence sometimes misused, watchdog groups say

KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

Since DNA technology entered our criminal justice system in the late 1980s, more than 340 people have been exonerated of wrongful convictions. That’s good news for the people whose records have been set straight, but it’s actually bad news for the criminal justice system as a whole, according to Daniel Medwed, a Northeastern University professor of law and criminal justice. What’s so bad about righting those wrongs? First, that the judicial system was wrong that many times about who committed a crime. Second, DNA evidence doesn’t exist in most criminal cases. “One of the issues of DNA is that it creates the appearance of solving the problem of ‘innocent man convicted,’ but it really doesn’t be-

cause so few cases actually involve biological evidence,â€? Medwed said. That means there’s less chance of correcting a wrong conviction when there’s no DNA evidence involved, unless we look at why wrongful convictions happen in the first place, said Medwed, who examines the issue in his latest project, the book â€œWrongful Convictions and the DNA Revolution.â€?

Published in March, the book examines 25 years of DNA exonerations. Medwed wrote one chapter and edited the entire book. The point is to try to understand what went wrong in cases that convicted innocent prisoners, he said. We know those cases had errors because DNA technology later corrected them, but that means many other cases with-

One contributing factor to wrongful convictions are eyewitnesses who identify the wrong suspects. If there’s DNA evidence, an inaccurate identification gets righted. If there’s no DNA evidence, juries could base their verdicts on

DNA evidence has been erroneously analyzed, mishandled and improperly used, according to judicial watchgroups. A few examples identiďŹ ed by the Forensic Genetic Policy Initiative, an international human rights organization: • The FBI acknowledged last year that 28 members of an elite forensic unit overstated DNA matches in microscopic hair samples used as evidence in hundreds of trials during a two-decade period before 2000. • The New York City Medical Examiner’s OďŹƒce announced in 2013 that it would review more than 800 rape cases in which DNA evidence might have been mishandled by lab technicians. • In 2015, a San Francisco authorities decided to review 1,400 criminal cases involving DNA evidence processed by a police crime lab technician and a supervisor who failed a DNA proďŹ ciency exam in 2014. • In 2013, a California man was implicated in the murder of a Silicon Valley millionaire after paramedics who treated him for intoxication accidentally left his DNA at the crime scene when they attended the victim later that day. --Metro sta

DNA is most often involved in sexual assault and murder cases, Medwed said, but usually doesn’t appear in cases involving such crimes as robbery, street theft and murder by firearm. “It’s much harder to overturn those other cases when you don’t have the magic bullet of science, he said. Mass. senators critical of NRC exemption for Pilgrim on safety upgrades Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey spoke out against the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s decision. Federal regulators on Monday ruled in a decision blasted by the state’s two U.S. senators that the owners of Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station will not have to re-evaluate the risks of earthquakes and floods to the Plymouth nuclear plant or upgrade the vent system intended to prevent explosions in accident scenarios. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Monday granted an extension for Entergy, the company that owns and operates Pilgrim, to comply with regulations for the plant’s “reliable hardened containment vents capable of operation under severe accident conditions.” The NRC also waived Entergy’s obligation to further study the risks of floods or earthquakes because its said that by the time the study could be finished and implemented the nuclear plant will be closed. Pilgrim is scheduled to shut down for good by May 31, 2019, but, citing the plant’s safety record and low rating by the NRC, critics of the plant have been repeatedly calling for it to close immediately. U.S. Sen. Edward Markey blasted the NRC’s decisions Monday, arguing that allowing Pilgrim to avoid heightened safety measures “represents an abdication of (the NRC’s) role as a safety regulator.” The “decision by the NRC undermines the

safety of Massachusetts communities living in the shadow of Pilgrim,” Markey said in a statement. “When Entergy announced its intention to cease operations at Pilgrim, the NRC promised that it would hold Entergy responsible for running the plant as safely as possible until that time. By providing exemptions from requirements meant to address the risk of terrorist attacks or severe accidents such as natural disasters, the NRC has broken its promise.” The hardened containment vent system (HCVS) is intended to “avoid an overpressure condition involving the reactor containment building that could lead to a failure of that containment” and could result in a nuclear accident similar to the 2011 meltdown at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in Japan. After the Fukushima incident, an NRC task force recommended a series of safety upgrades for nuclear power stations in America and the NRC later ordered that plants with similar equipment as Fukushima -- Pilgrim among them -- ensure that their HCVS systems can withstand the pressure and temperature of steam generated early in an accident, contain explosions that could occur later in an accident, and be operated even if the reactor loses all electrical power. Last June, Entergy requested an extension until Dec. 31, 2019 -- about seven months after the plant is scheduled to close for good -- to comply with all aspects of the NRC order. IRobot sues Hoover, other rivals over robot vacuum patents The lawsuit accuses competitors of sweeping up the company’s floorcleaning ideas. IRobot, the maker of the popular Roomba robotic vacuum, brought a string of lawsuits on Monday accusing rivals including The Hoover Co. and Black & Decker Corp. of using its patented technology without permission. Massachusetts-based iRobot filed lawsuits in federal court in Boston against Hoover, Black & Decker, Bobsweep Inc. and Bissell Homecare Inc. IRobot said they infringe on several of its patents covering the idea of an autonomous floor-cleaning robot. “iRobot will not stand by while others offer products that infringe on our intellectual property,” the company said in a statement.

Representatives for Hoover, Black & Decker, Bissell and Bobsweep did not immediately return a request for comment. iRobot also sued Chinabased Shenzhen Silver Star Intelligent Technology Co., which iRobot said manufactures Hoover and

Black & Decker vacuums. One of the oldest and best-known makers of traditional vacuums, Hoover, is now owned by TTI Floor Care North America, a subsidiary of Techtronic Industries Co., which is based in Hong Kong. Black & Decker is a

subsidiary of Connecticut-based Stanley Black & Decker Inc. IRobot created the market for robotic vacuums when it launched Roomba in 2002 but has faced increased competition from other appliance makers. Hoover launched its line of Quest robotic vacuums, over which iRobot is suing, in 2016. Other vacuums at issue in the lawsuits are the Bissell SmartClean, Bobsweep’s Bobi and Black & Decker’s BDH5000WM. Residential robotic vacuums generated $1.5 billion in global revenues in 2016, an amount expected to reach $2.5 billion by the end of 2021, according to the market research firm Future Market Insights. The overall market for household vacuums was $12 billion in 2015, according to Global Market Insights, another research firm. REUTERS

Lawsuit against Trump over foreign payments expands A nonprofit watchdog expanded a lawsuit accusing President Donald Trump of violating the Constitution by letting his hotels and restaurants accept payments from foreign governments. The amended complaint filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan adds a restaurant trade group whose members include nationally known chefs Tom Colicchio and Alice Waters, and a hotel events booker in Washington, D.C., as plaintiffs. It is intended to address concern over whether the watchdog, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, was itself harmed by Trump and had standing to sue at all.

Trump is expected to respond by April 21. He had said the original suit, filed Jan. 23, had no merit. Spokesmen for the Justice Department did not respond to requests for comment Tuesday. The amended complaint said Trump violates the Constitution’s “emoluments” clause, which bars him from accepting various gifts from foreign

governments without congressional approval, by maintaining ownership over his business empire despite ceding day-to-day control to his sons, Eric and Donald Jr. It said members of Restaurant Opportunities Centers United Inc., which represents more than 200 restaurants and nearly 25,000 workers, have improperly lost business, wages and tips to Trump’s competing businesses. Jill Phaneuf, the other new plaintiff, works for a hospitality company that books events in hotels near Washington’s “Embassy Row,” which house foreign diplomats, and claimed that Trump is costing her commissions. Oops! Carmelo Anthony impregnated a stripper, maybe Yesterday, news broke that Carmelo Anthony and his wife, La La Anthony, had split. We wondered if the stress of the current NBA season had anything to do with it, but turns out the real reason is way more sinister and juicy. I’m talkin’ gossip gold. According to TMZ, the 32-year-old went and got a stripper pregnant, which is so uninspired that I could vomit. Multiple sources tell the site the New York Knicks player cheated on his wife with a woman who is gainfully employed at a New York gentleman’s cub. And now, she is claiming she’s six-and-a-half months pregnant with Anthony’s kid. That’s

not great! The mystery woman is demanding Carmelo pitch in for all pregnancy- and baby-related costs, which he definitely should do. Melo and La La’s marriage has reportedly been rocky for a while, and Carmelo impregnating a random woman certainly doesn’t help matters. Yesterday, a source told TMZ the

breakup was “amicable and that they have “much respect for each other, but if the news about the ol’ infidelity and impregnation are true, I really doubt it. Neither of them has bothered to file for divorce, but TMZ reports that a reconciliation is unlikely. Carmelo, who plays forward for a team that loses a lot, and La La, most famous for being an MTV VJ during a simpler time, have been married for seven years. They share a son, 10-year-old Kiyan. I don’t want to tell La La what to do, but she should go ahead and leave him. Cheating on your wife and getting exotic dancers pregnant is all very 1997. Nobody has time for that.

tric mixer,” says Mimi Graney, author of “Fluff: The Sticky Sweet Story of an American Icon.” “Marshmallow toasting parties, the equivalent of a fondue pot in the ’70s, were popular, and marshmallow cream became popularized as a shortcut for making frosting.” Somerville resident Archibald Query wasn’t the only one pushing marshmallow cream in the early 20th century. When World War I began, sugar became scarce and Query sold the company to Allen Durkee and Fred Mower, who renamed it Marshmallow Fluff. The Lynn-made product skyrocketed to even further popularity in the 1960s, when the company’s

advertising d i i agency created a campaign around the Fluffernutter sandwich, a fusion of peanut butter and fluff on bread. While a woman in Melrose had already pushed that recipe during the war, her “Liberty Sandwich” certainly didn’t have the same ring to it. Fast-forward to the present day, when Fluff owns about 85 percent of the marshmallow market. Now in its 100th year, the company is a mainstay in New England, where half of its product is sold. Every September, Somerville comes alive in celebration of the sticky stuff with the What the Fluff ? Festival, which Graney herself created to help revital-

ize i the h Union i Square neighborhood. It was just a coincidence that the summer after she decided to create the festival, Massachusetts State Senator Jarrett Barrios filed a bill seeking to ban Fluffernutter sandwiches from being served in school lunches more than once a week. The bill didn’t pass, but the public’s interest in preserving Fluff’s legacy was officially piqued. “There were eight or nine hundred people at that first one, and now 10,000 are coming,” says Graney. We can’t be stopped.” Mimi Graney will have a book signing on April 19th from 6 to 7 p.m. at Gracie’s Ice Cream in Union Square. MEGAN JOHNSON

Such travels not only open the mind, they change the body. “It became very, very clear that we eat far too much, Hunnam says. “I was able to survive very easily on a quarter of the food I normally eat. I was losing weight, but there was also a clarity and, oddly, an emotional stability that came with it. One of his co-stars — Robert Pattinson, who plays his partner on two of the missions — liked to say that they got “addicted to what they were going through. “Once the

One of our favorite kitchens from designer Sarah Sherman Samuel, which have become somewhat of an online sensation, features cabinets in Farrow & Ball’s greenish/ gray Pigeon. We spoke to founder John McDonald about the benefits of using an Ikea system, and the relentless appeal of the Shaker door. Why go with an Ikea kitchen? Ikea [is] the biggest furniture retailer in the world. Some stuff doesn’t have a long shelf life — their kitchens are different. ... They have solid boxes. It’s a particle-board box, but that’s the standard in Europe; that’s the standard with some of the most expensive cabinet manufacturers in the world. People in the U.S. can complain, like, “Oh my God, it’s so cheap.” That’s what the rest of the world uses, and it’s perfectly fine. They also work with Blum, which is the bestknown hardware supplier in the world for hinges and door slides.

Kitchen-remodel trends McDonald shares the most-sought-after features from Semihandmade. • The biggest seller we have is what we consider traditional Shaker doors, which is a simple frame and panel door. If you go in to Instagram, the biggest response is from the traditional doors. But I always say, a Shaker is in between traditional and modern. It can look like both depending on how you accessorize it. • We’re seeing a lot of two tones. A lot of kitchens right now are doing darker lower cabinets and light uppers. • If you can hide the appliance, integrating a seamless look as possible is what people want. The exception being a stove, which is like a piece of furniture. It’s a point of pride for people. • As far as pulls, in the last couple of years, brass has gotten really popular. Stainless is always the safest, but it’s all about matte, which is the really popular look.

consuming. And it would crack and warp. Most of our doors have veneer faces. Veneer is a thin layer of real wood applied to both sides of a three-quarter-inch MDF core. MDF, or medium density fiberboard, is just about the flattest and most structurally stable surface available. Certainly a plywood box is better, but it’s a lot more expensive. ... It’s like saying a Porsche is better than a Toyota— it absolutely is. But a Toyota is still a really good car. What are some things you’re excited about? We work with wellknown companies like Stikwood and make doors with their products, like reclaimedlumber doors. We work with companies like Art of Board, which is a recycled-skateboard company, and Plyboo, which is a really high-end bamboo company. Some of those are solid and really high-quality. On the other hand, we do have doors in the last year that are more at the Ikea price point. They are still all made in the U.S. but it’s much more for a customer who is budgetconscious and on a tight timeframe.

Dana-Farber Offers Tips on How to Reduce Your Risk of Oral Cancer Each year, more than 48,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with oral or oropharyngeal cancer, which occurs in the oral cavity – lips and cheeks, gums, tongue, floor or roof of the mouth – and the oropharynx, referring to the back of the mouth, the tonsils, and the base of the tongue. While not all cancers are preventable, there are several things you can do to lower your risk of developing oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancers.

Stay Away from Tobacco Smoking or chewing tobacco increases your risk of oral cancer to up to 13 times that of non-smokers. It’s also a risk factor for many other cancers – lung, bladder, esophageal, pancreatic – in addition to things like heart disease, emphysema, and many vascular problems. When a smoker quits cigarettes, it can take up to 20 years of not smoking for his or her cancer risk to return to that of the non-smokers. Nevertheless, risk decreases every time a smoker chooses not to light up. For those already diagnosed with oral cancers, quitting smoking or chewing tobacco has many benefits, including increasing the likelihood of their cancer being cured, lowering the risk of treatment side effects, and decreasing the chances of developing a secondary cancer. While many cancer patients and others are

increasingly looking to e-cigarettes as a method of quitting smoking, we urge against this, as e-cigarettes are not FDA approved or regulated, and data about their effect on health are controversial. Speaking with your care team or a therapist, using nicotine-replacement therapy, following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control, and considering a cessation program are all reliable methods to help you kick the habit.

Limit Alcohol Consumption Drinking alcohol increases the risk of developing oral and other cancers, including esophageal and liver, which is compounded when using alcohol and tobacco together. If you drink, the American Cancer Society recommends limiting your consumption to no more than two drinks per day for men and one for women, and avoiding behaviors like binge drinking.

Get Vaccinated Against HPV Certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV) can also lead to oropharyngeal cancers, and many HPVrelated cancers occur in people with no history of tobacco use. HPV is also a risk factor for cervical, anal, and penile cancer. While the HPV vaccine has been

proven to decrease the risk of cervical cancer, it’s also highly likely to reduce the risk of oropharyngeal cancers and others – an ongoing area of research. Girls and young women ages 11-26 and boys and young men ages 11-21 should get vaccinated against HPV. Older people and men are also at a slightly higher risk of developing oral cancers, which are often diagnosed following routine examinations by a dentist or doctor. Be sure to maintain regular dentist appointments, and speak with your doctor if you notice anything new or different about your mouth, head, or neck. Bruins ready for pivotal Game 4 The B’s penalty kill hasn’t lived up to its billing in the series so far. RICH SLATE @Richslate

sports@metro.us

It’s not far-fetched to say that the Bruins could be up 3-0 in their first round playoff series against the Senators, but the cold reality is that they are down 2-1 after another crushing overtime loss (4-3 at TD Garden in Game 3 on Monday) to head coach Guy Boucher’s hard-nosed group.

That’s the schizophrenic nature of life in the NHL postseason, where things can change faster than the weather on a New England spring day. Boston hadn’t hosted a Bruins playoff game in three years, so the B’s made sure that the boisterous Patriots’ Day crowd got their money’s worth at least in terms of entertainment value, but not so much in the final result.           Bruins interim head coach Bruce Cassidy labeled the loss “very demoralizing,â€? as the Senators won it on a power-play goal by Bobby Ryan 5:43 into

THE BRUINS ARE AVERAGING 2.6 GOALS PER GAME IN THE SERIES than us early. We’ve got to do a better job on Erik Karlsson [who had two amazing stretch passes for assists in Game 3 and 4].â€?           For a score line that mirrored Saturday’s Game 3 (a 4-3 overtime win in Ottawa), the way that things in between played out couldn’t have been much different in Game 4. Rather than blowing a two-goal lead, the Bruins took the even harder route of trailing 3-0 early in the second period before they started to wake up and show some much-needed signs of life. Rookie right wing Noel Acciari potted his first career NHL playoff goal and center David Backes cut it to 3-2 42 seconds later with his first postseason goal for the black and gold. Finally, David Pastrnak recorded his inaugural playoff tally with

a wicked one-timer on the power play to knot things up at three in the second period. During the regular season, Boston’s penalty kill was ranked No. 1 in the league, but vs. Ottawa, the B’s have had some clear issues. Dion Phaneuf’s overtime game-winner in Game 2 technically wasn’t on the power play, but it came on the same possession

after Zdeno Chara’s penalty had just expired. In the three games thus far, Ottawa’s power play is 3-for-10 while Boston’s is 2-for-8. Overtime in a playoff game is stressful enough as it is. The Bruins don’t have to add to that heavy burden by making things even more difficult on themselves. “Our penalty kill has been huge all year

and Nash is a big part of that,â€? noted Backes. “We battled to get back in the game but obviously the way it ended was not what we were looking for. We expect Game 4 to be the same and we have to come out flying on Wednesday (7:30 p.m., NESN). We want to tie things up in the series and make it a best-of-3 going back to Ottawa [on Friday].â€?Â

Aries If you want to make a change, look inward. Self-improvement will bring the highest returns and keep you out of trouble. Use common sense and set realistic goals.

Libra Sensitive issues will be difficult to broach. Think carefully before you say something that may offend someone. Less is more when it comes to emotional matters.

Taurus Let your creative imagination take control and help you discover attributes you didn’t know you had. Observation will help you ward off unpredictable individuals.

Scorpio An emotional situation is best handled cautiously. Saying the wrong thing will hurt your reputation, status or chance to get ahead. Listen rather than react.

Gemini Offer only what you can and refuse to give in to someone trying to coerce you into helping or paying for things that aren’t your responsibility.

Sagittarius Look for new opportunities at networking functions or by reconnecting with former co-workers. A change will do you good. Make personal improvements.

Cancer Joint ventures are best avoided. Stay away from anyone promising you the world with little to back his or her words. A loss is likely if you mix money and emotions.

Capricorn Emotional matters will escalate if you take on someone who doesn’t share your opinions. Having an open mind is good, but don’t give in to manipulation.

Leo Working alongside a colleague who doesn’t agree with you will be difficult if you don’t set guidelines. Make suggestions that promote compromise on both sides.

Aquarius Emotions will spring up out of the blue and could result in a costly error if you aren’t careful. Stay focused on what is doable, not on the impossible.

Virgo Emotional matters will escalate if you aren’t careful what you say or how you treat someone you deal with daily. Show greater sensitivity toward your peers and family.

Pisces Personal partnerships should be handled with care. Go out of your way to accommodate someone in need or a cause you want to help. EUGENIA LAST
