One policeman was killed and another wounded in a shooting incident in central Paris on Thursday night, a police source said. A person who fired on police on the Champs-Elysees shopping boulevard just days ahead of France’s presidential election has been killed, the source said. A police source also said there had been two assailants, and a witness told Reuters that one man got out of a car at the scene and
began shooting with a machine gun. Police authorities called on the public to avoid the area. The incident came as French voters prepared go to the polls on Sunday in the most tightly-contested presidential election in living memory. REUTERS

WHITE HOUSE SIDEWALK TO BE CLOSED TO PUBLIC

The U.S. Secret Service said it would end public access to a sidewalk along the south fence of the White House beginning on Wednesday night. The sidewalk has been closed nightly from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. since 2015 and will now be off-limits around the clock, the Secret Service said in a statement. The closure will “lessen the possibility of individuals illegally accessing the White House grounds,” Secret Service Commu-
nications Director Cathy Milhoan said. In March, a man scaled a fence east of the White House at night and was on the property’s grounds for 16 minutes before being detained. He never entered the White House, the Secret Service said. President Donald Trump was inside the residence at the time of the March 10 incident. The intrusion was the latest in a series of breaches at the White House in recent years. REUTERS
North Korean state media warned the United States of a “super-mighty preemptive strike” after U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the U.S. was looking at ways to bring pressure to bear on North Korea over its nuclear program. President Donald Trump has taken a hard line with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who has rebuffed admonitions from sole major ally China and proceeded with nuclear and mis-
sile programs in defiance of U.N. Security Council sanctions. The Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the North’s ruling Workers’ Party, did not mince its words. “In the case of our super-mighty preemptive strike being launched, it will completely and immediately wipe out not only U.S. imperialists’ invasion forces in South Korea and its surrounding areas but the U.S. mainland and reduce them to ashes,” it said. REUTERS
A former Tennessee high school teacher accused of abducting a 15-year-old student in March was arrested on Thursday in northern California, where the teenager was also safely recovered, authorities said. Tad Cummins, 50, who disappeared in mid-March with Elizabeth Thomas, had been charged with aggravated kidnapping and having sexual contact with a minor. Police had be-
lieved Cummins was armed with two handguns, but he was arrested without incident around 9 a.m. local time just outside of Cecilville, in a rural area about 60 miles south of the California-Oregon border, Siskiyou County Sheriff ’s Office spokeswoman Kelly Giordano said by telephone. REUTERS

Venezuelan policemen take positions during an opposition protest against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, in Caracas on Thursday. Venezuelan riot police fired tear gas Thursday at groups of protesters seeking to oust President Nicolas Maduro, who have vowed new mass marches after a day of deadly unrest. Police in western Caracas broke up scores of opposition protesters trying to join a larger march, though there was no immediate repeat of Wednesday’s violent clashes, which left three people dead. Brooklyn-born Olympian aims for boxing stardom Richardson Hitchins, who represented Haiti in the Rio Olympics, signed as a professional with Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s promoters. ERIC GIRARD @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
A decade ago, Richardson Hitchins of Crown Heights was selling water in a park so he could buy sneakers for school, seeing violence all around him. Now, at 19, he’s an Olympian and two-time Golden Gloves champion. Hitchins recently signed with boxing great
Floyd Mayweather Jr.‘s promotions company and will appear in his second pro fight Saturday at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. “One time I saw a friend get killed when I was a little 10-year-old. I was running with my cart and my bottles of water, telling everybody in my neighborhood I had just seen him get shot,” Hitchins said this week at Atlas Cops and Kids boxing gym in East Flatbush. Instead of becoming caught up in the violence, Hitchins has beaten the odds — and also lots of opponents in the boxing ring. At age 12 he would go on YouTube to watch videos of Mayweather, wanting to learn how to
box like the champ. He started looking up local boxing gyms online and came across Atlas Cops and Kids. When he went there, everything changed. “I was like a kid in a candy store: the gloves, the smell,” he said. “I’m in love with boxing, deeply in love.” Behind the Cops and Kids program is Pat Russo, 55. As a 22-yearold rookie cop, he was instrumental in starting the boxing program in Sunset Park. Hitchins considers Russo a powerful mentor in his life. “That’s an angel from God,” he said. And Russo is high on Hitchins as well. “There’s smart, and
Richardson Hitchens trains at the Atlas Cops and Kids gym in East Flatbush. LUC KORDAS
then there’s boxing smart. He is boxing genius,” Russo said. As an amateur, Hitchins won the Ringside World Championships twice and the Junior Golden Gloves Nationals twice. He failed to make the U.S. boxing team for the 2016 Olympics. However, weeks before the Olympics, he
traveled to Azerbaijan for a qualifying match and won an Olympic spot representing Haiti, where his parents are from. “I was on Cloud 100,” Hitchins recalled. “I cried.” But in Rio, he lost to Team USA’s Gary Russell. Even so, he had secured at least one important fan: Mayweather. In March, Hitchins
won his first pro fight, with a first-round TKO of Mario Perez at Barclays. “I’m gonna be a big name in boxing,” he predicted. “I definitely see myself taking that superstar light and taking it to the next level, the Mike Tyson level. I want that type of stardom.‘’ For more about Hitchins’ bid for boxing fame, visit Metro.us.

ELECTRIFIED NYC moves forward with goal of electric fleet of city vehicles New York City employees are now driving 650 electric vehicles, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Thursday in announcing that the municipality is ahead of schedule to meet its target for the fleet by 2025. In addition to the electric vehicles, the city also has 75 “stealth” ambulances, which use battery power to run onboard systems, rather than rely
on an idling engine. The city plans to have a fleet of 1,000 electric vehicles by the end of July, the mayor said. “When it comes to meeting the challenge of climate change while
creating a more just and equitable city, New York is leading the way,” de Blasio said in a statement. The city has committed Mayor Bill de Blasio. an initial GETTY IMAGES investment of $10 million to support fast-charging
stations to extend the range of electric vehicles across the city. One critical partnership for expanding electric vehicle use got underway this week, as Con Edison announced a plan to invest up to an additional $25 million in innovative strategies and infrastructure, such as charging stations. Con Ed is seeking bids from partners to install more than 100 chargers in the city. On Earth Day last year, a new city tradition was born: Midtown and Downtown thoroughfares were closed to cars in a gesture of reducing pollution. Now in its second year, Car Free NYC: Earth Day will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. It is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Vision Zero initiative. This year the event is bigger, stretching across more blocks and including parts of the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. Thirty city blocks, running down Broadway from 47th to 17th streets, will be closed to all vehicles and events and activities will usurp the roadways. Car-free zones will also run from 181st to 190th Street along St. Nicholas Avenue; in The Bronx from East 161st to East 163rd Street on Eagle Avenue; in Brooklyn on Montague Street at Court Street; and in Queens on Woodside from 75th to 77th Street, and also Shore Boulevard from Ditmars Boulevard to Astoria Boulevard. “Car Free Day is about encouraging New Yorkers
to leave the car at home for a day and celebrating the potential of open streets,” said City Councilman Ydannis Rodriguez, chairman of its transportation committee. Below are some of the events planned for Manhattan. More detailed listings of the Car Free NYC: Earth Day activities can be found on the city’s programming guide. • Times Square at 47th Street and Broadway: Dance and musical performances, historical bike tours. • Garment District at 38th Street and Broadway: Arts and crafts workshops, sculptural art walks, pop-up parklet, planting workshop. • Herald Square at 34th Street and Broadway: Fitness classes, historical walking tours, musical performances, Civil Society programming. • 26-27th streets: City urban, energy, environmental, sanitation and health departments will give workshops and demos. • Flatiron at 23rd Street and Broadway: Parkour demos, fitness and dance classes, bike and environmental programs and free play. • Union Square 17th Street and Broadway: Fitness classes, historical walking tours.

A NASA climate scientist explains what research is showing us about the Earth right now Vegetation is changing, sea ice levels are beginning to rise, and there’s more, said Benjamin Cook. AMANDA MIKELBERG @MetroNewYork
amanda.mikelberg@metro.us
Ahead of his Earth Dayfocused lecture at the Hayden Planetarium, NASA climate scientist Benjamin Cook discussed with Metro how important satellite imagery is to the study of the Earth’s environment. He also discussed NASA’s continuing effort to gather more information about the planet. Cook’s lecture will take place Friday, at 7 p.m., at the Hayden Planetarium Space Theater in the American Museum of Natural History. What does NASA do for climate science? NASA does a lot of different things. It’s not just the space program. What a lot of people don’t realize is that the Earth’s system is part of our fundamental mission. We have lots of satellite missions and instruments to give us unparalleled information about vegetation, clouds, changes in the ocean, sea ice and glaciers, groundwater — almost anything you might be interested in they have some way of measuring it through satellites. We also run big simulations to understand how climate will change in the future with greenhouse gas emissions. What kind of information can the satellites gather? Satellites give us a way to fill in the gaps. We can’t have a thermometer everywhere. Satellites
NASA
give us a way to know what’s going on in places that are very distant from people, such as Antarctica, or the middle of the Amazon, or the middle of the Arctic Ocean. Without NASA, there’s nobody else running these satellite missions giving us the opportunity to look at these things. The data matters. Without the data we can’t make the most informed decisions about how to deal with problems. Data is nonpartisan, it’s not political. Regardless of your background, an informed decision cannot be made without data. What are the images saying about Earth right now? What they’re telling us is that things are changing. In some places they are changing very rapidly, and that’s consistent with the Earth getting warmer. Glaciers are shrinking. Sea ice levels beginning to rise. Vegetation is changing. That’s all consistent with the levels of greenhouse gas emissions. It’s definitely not slowing down, and in some places it might be accelerating, temperatures rising faster in some places. But even where it’s not accelerating it will continue to happen if things keep warming. Have efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions made any difference? At this point it’s just hard to say. And the reason for that is because there’s a lag in the system. Anything we do to change greenhouse gas emissions can take several years or a decade to show us its impact. But one thing is clear: The more greenhouse gas we emit the larger the impact.

Prosecutors have raised concerns about Giuliani’s possible conflicts on interest in the case. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, hired to resolve criminal charges against a Turkish gold trader, said in an affidavit that senior federal officials are open to a deal that would help his client while promoting the security interests of the United States. In a filing in Manhattan federal court made public late Wednesday, Giuliani said both U.S. and Turkish officials remained “receptive” to a diplomatic solution due to the nature of the charges against Reza Zarrab and the perceived importance of Turkey as a geopolitical ally. “That receptiveness is hardly surprising when one considers that none of the transactions in which Mr. Zarrab is alleged to have participated involved weapons or nuclear technology, or any other contraband, but rather involved consumer goods, and that Turkey is situated in a part of the world strategically critical to the United States,” Giuliani said. The affidavit was submitted ahead of a hearing on Monday being held to ensure that Zarrab understands potential conflicts of interest inherent in hiring Giuliani, an adviser
to President Donald Trump, and Michael Mukasey, former attorney general, to represent him. Prosecutors have raised concerns about possible conflicts because eight of the U.S. banks involved in the case have been clients of Giuliani or Mukasey’s law firms. They have also cited the work of Giuliani’s firm, Greenberg Traurig LLP, as a registered agent of Turkey. Zarrab is accused of conspiring to conduct illegal transactions through U.S. banks on behalf of Iran’s government, violating U.S. sanctions. Prosecutors have filed similar charges against Mehmet Hakan Atilla, an executive at Turkish stateowned bank Halkbank. Both men have pleaded not guilty. The case has raised concerns at the highest levels of Turkish power. Last month Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu called Atilla’s arrest “political,” while President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused U.S. authorities of having “ulterior motives” in prosecuting Zarrab. Both Giuliani and Mukasey, who also submitted an affidavit, said they did not see any conflicts of interest in their work representing Zarrab but promised not do any work for any of the banks in question while the Zarrab case was ongoing. They both said Zarrab was paying his own legal bills. REUTERS

‘Operation Vandelay Industries’ sounds like a lost ‘Seinfeld’ episode, but it’s not It may sound like a longlost episode of “Seinfeld” starring Paul Newman, but the New York State Attorney General’s office announced Thursday that an alleged fake architect has been indicted for fraudulent activities in three counties. Dubbed “Operation Vandelay Industries,” the investigation charged Paul J. Newman with 58 counts of forgery, fraud, larceny and unlicensed practice of architecture in Albany, Rensselaer and Saratoga counties. Newman allegedly amassed about $200,000 in fake design services since 2010 and affixed forged state registered architect or professional engineer stamps to more than 1,000 building plans and inspections, according to a release from Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman. “As we allege, for over

seven years, the defendant has pretended to be a registered architect, deceiving hundreds of New Yorkers — including families and senior citizens — with the sole goal of enriching himself,” Schneiderman said. Newman, if convicted, faces between five and 15 years in prison. While the allegations are serious and affected hundreds of New Yorkers, we can’t help but be
wowed by several similarities to the beloved sitcom, “Seinfeld,” which ended its nine-season run in 1998. “Operation Vandelay Industries” pays homage to Vandelay Industries, the fictional company Jason Alexander’s George Costanza character pretended to have been interviewed by “Vandalay Industries” to nab an extension of his unemployment benefits in Season 3. In Season 1, George declared he had dreams of becoming an architect or “pretend to be an architect.” In Season 6, he even falsely claimed to have designed “the new addition of the Guggenheim” Museum. De Blasio said he spoke to the Tolley’s wife, Marie, his brother, Bobby, and his parents. Tolley also leaves behind an 8-year-old daughter, Isabella. First US drive-through marijuana store to open in Colorado The first U.S. drivethrough marijuana dispensary is set to open on Thursday in a small town in Colorado, a state that has been at the forefront of pot legalization. The Tumbleweed Express Drive-Thru, housed in a former car wash in Parachute, Colorado, will allow customers to pull their cars into the store’s bay to buy pot directly from their vehicles. “You actually drive into the building,” Mark Smith, chief executive of Tumbleweed, the company that owns the new store and six other pot shops in the state, said in a phone interview on Wednesday. “A door opens up and you drive the car into the building and then the door closes behind you, like in a Jiffy Lube. essence, you’re inside the dispensary, but in a vehicle,” he said. That process allows the store to comply with Colorado pot laws, which require that marijuana retailers carry out their transactions inside an existing store, ruling out the outdoor windows that are staples of traditional drivethroughs, Smith said. Officials with Colorado’s marijuana regulator were not immediately available for comment on Wednesday, but were quoted in local media as
saying the store would need to abide by statewide rules and bar people under 21 from the premises, even in the back of a car. Parachute, a town of 1,100 people about 200 miles west of Denver, banned recreational pot sales in 2013, the year after the state legalized the drug. It rescinded the ban two years later after revenues from natural gas dropped, according to local media. Concerns have arisen over a potential federal crackdown on states with legal recreational pot. Marijuana remains illegal under federal law but has been legalized for recreational use in eight states, including Washington, Colorado and California, as well as the District of Columbia. REUTERS

Aaron Hernandez’s death in a Massachusetts prison cell Wednesday has been ruled a suicide, the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office said on Thursday. Officials also released new details on the death, and the minutes after prison officers at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center discovered his lifeless body. The district attorney’s office now says that three handwritten notes were left next to a Bible in Hernandez’s cell. Officials did not divulge the contents of the notes. Previous reports have maintained that the former NFL player did not leave a suicide note. Hernandez was found hanging in his prison cell, with a bedsheet around his neck, early Wednesday morning. He was pronounced dead in a hospital a short time later. Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Henry Nields performed the autopsy on the former New England Patriots star tight end, and convicted murderer. It ruled

death by suicide, caused by asphyxia by hanging, according to the district attorney’s office. On Wednesday, shortly after the 27-year-old Hernandez’s death, his agent, Brian Murphy, said there was “absolutely no chance he took his own life.” Officials said that there were no signs of struggle and Hernandez was determined to be alone at the time of his death. The investigation also found cardboard jammed into the door tracks of Hernandez’s single-inmate cell, possibly to impede entry. Hernandez was locked into his cell at 8 p.m. Tuesday and a correction officer saw him hanging from the sheet at 3:03 a.m., according to a statement. The officer
forced his way through the blocked door. The medical examiner’s office released Hernandez’s body on Wednesday, officials said, but withheld some of the tissue, including his brain, until the cause and manner of death was officially determined. Now that the report is concluded, the brain will be released to Boston University’s Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center, “as Mr. Hernandez’s family wishes,” according to the DA’s office. The center studies CTE, a degenerative brain disease that has been found in NFL players and other athletes who have experienced repeated trauma to the head. CTE can only be performed after a person has died. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT
ington on the day of celebration for marijuana fans underscored the drug’s legal limbo in much of the United States. More than two dozen states have legalized pot for medical or recreational use, but it remains unlawful under federal statutes. A Quinnipiac University poll released on Thursday showed U.S. voters back legalization by a margin of 60 percent to 34 percent, the highest level of support for legalized pot ever recorded by the survey. The arrests in Washington surprised organizer Adam Ei-
dinger, who said the event was held on a District of Columbia sidewalk across the street from the Capitol to avoid conflicting with federal law. Marijuana possession is legal in the District. He and others planned to protest for marijuana reforms on Monday by lighting up on the Capitol grounds. “A lot of people are never exposed to this,” a 22-year-old Senate staffer who declined to give his name said after being handed two joints. “It should be considered more.”

Katherine Heigl terrorizes Rosario Dawson in “Unforgettable,” in theaters Friday. WARNER BROS. PICTURES
Rosario Dawson says her new film isn’t just for women The actress wants men to see her thriller, the intense and emotional “Unforgettable.” LUCIA HERNANDEZ @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
Rosario Dawson knows “Unforgettable” is a thriller. The actress plays Julia, a web editor and writer whose fiance (Geoff Stults) has a rather clingy ex-wife, Tessa (Katherine Heigl). Tessa’s none-too-pleased her former husband has a new gal pal, much less one who will be coparenting their young daughter (Isabella Rice). So Tessa decides to make Julia’s life hell, including stealing her phone, setting up a fake Facebook account and contacting her physically abusive ex-boyfriend, pretending to be her. But though there’s suspense and scares and, eventually, a big
catfight with an assist from a fire poker, Dawson insists everyone involved didn’t treat it as mere entertainment. The characters are more fleshed-out than expected. And it deals sincerely with the pain of divorce, the strain women feel to be perfect and the difficulty of overcoming trauma. “We tried to make them real people in real situations,” Dawson says. “The stuff that’s happening, while it may be really entertaining onscreen, when that happens in real life, not so much.” “Unforgettable” may star women, but Dawson doesn’t think the audience should only be female. “It’s not just a traditional chick flick, where we’re only making this for women. I love that it’s testing well with men, too,” Dawson says. “It’s super lazy when you get caught up in think-
ing only about niche audiences. We can make a story that everybody can relate to, because we’re being honest.” Tessa may be obsessive and deranged, but the movie is careful not to paint her as a onenote monster. She’s going through real pain, and so is Julia. “There’s a common issue these women are going through: this striving for perfection,” Dawson says. “We’re living in a world that is constantly showing us a highlight reel — our pictures with the perfect filters on them. We’re in this dynamic now where people are sharing the worst things about themselves. But it’s just for views, it’s just for attention. We took a chance here, showing that being vulnerable can be a
strong thing. If you really want to be strong then you have to look at your ugly side. You have to deal with it.” No matter how wild the ending is, “Unforgettable” never loses track of what it’s really about, deep-down. “The most important thing is the moment [Julia] finally realizes that she can be honest, that the shame she’s holding onto is not something to be ashamed of,” explains Dawson. “She’s come from a dark place and she’s seen the light. That shows her how much stronger she is.” GETTY
Real talk Despite all the twists and turns, “Unforgettable” doesn’t cheapen one of its most harrowing elements: its portrait of someone who’s been in an abusive relationship. Julia hasn’t told her new beau about an ex-boyfriend (Simon Kassianides), who used to beat her. When she left the relationship, she tried to hide any trace of her former life. Dawson’s mother used to work a woman’s shelter, and the actress herself has dealt with veterans who’ve returned home from war. “I’ve heard so many women and men talking about being in an abusive relationship,” explains Dawson. “We were all very sensitive about it, because it meant a lot to show this woman who had been a victim most of her life. But now she’s choosing to be a survivor.”

Charlize Theron sits in the producer’s chair for ‘Girlboss’ Charlize Theron is best known for her Oscar-winning performance in “Monster” but is working behind the scenes in “Girlboss” as a producer.
“The future is feminine.” LUCÍA HERNÁNDEZ MWN letters@metro.us
From winning the Oscar in 2003 for her role in “Monster” to her performance in the 2011 comedy “Young Adult,” Charlize Theron has been dedicated to exploring atypical female characters. Now she does it from behind the scenes with “Girlboss,” a TV adaptation of the autobiography written by the founder of Nasty Gal, Sophia Amoruso.

We spoke with the 41-year-old actress about what drew her to the book, and about her part in changing the way women are portrayed. How did you come up with the idea of making this book a TV show? I remember how the book caught my attention right away. The glossy pink cover with the image of Sophia on it, something caught me. I had no idea what I was going to read and I remember being surprised that it was not a typical life story but little passages in the

What does “Girlboss” mean to you in these times? I fervently believe that the future is feminine. When you see the world population, more than half of it corresponds to the female population, and yet we are the least educated and are treated as second-class citizens. So, I think we need more stuff like this out there. Do you think the characters you play can inspire women around the globe to be what they dream to be? I am really inspired by this generation of young
people. I remember when I started in this industry many of the young actresses were chosen to play the bride or the trophy wife, and I often felt like I had to turn water into wine. I was at the mercy of a writer giving me a chance. And it was not until I was offered good chances and that I was ready for them and that I was able to jump. But I think this generation is going to change that and it inspires me to know that I will somehow be part of that change by finding the material and developing it.

In 2014, Nasty Gal founder Sophia Amoruso released her bestselling book, “Girlboss,” inspiring a generation of women to be the bosses of their own lives and make their dreams a reality. On Friday, Netflix brings the book to life as a series that is described as a “loose retelling of true events.” Written by Kay Cannon of “Pitch Perfect” fame, it stars Britt Robertson as a caricatured version of Amoruso finding her way to business success and adulthood in San Francisco. From the start, the character Sophia is pretty intolerable — prone to public outbursts, firings

cess. It’s awfully entertaining to watch (if you can get past wincing every five seconds), but how can you be inspired
by someone you can’t relate to as a human being? When asked about how the show is different from the book, Cannon responds: “That was the real challenge — to make it funny and to dramatize things. There’s a lot of fabricating that went on.” Amoruso says “the series is Kay’s creation” and she had to “have a lot of trust” to put her life and career into the show. And for the record, “her mom is totally not like that.” (We’ll find out what that means in episode 10, apparently.) What I can’t understand is how the original “girlboss” allowed her story to be morphed into an awkward, superficial comedy? With the real Nasty Gal filing for bankruptcy back in November of 2016, perhaps Amoruso is cool with anything these days — as long as the price is right.

We interrupt your regularly scheduled baseball season for a rooftop soccer party. Spain’s biggest soccer league, La Liga, wants more New Yorkers to get into “the beautiful game,â€? and what better way to do it than by getting you into the beautiful views from Midtown’s undisputed king of rooftop bars at a massive viewing party? This Sunday, April 23, a match will take place that is so important, it has a name: El ClĂĄsico, a clash between top-ranked Real Madrid and their secondplace rivals, Barcelona.
If you go Real Madrid vs. Barcelona April 23, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Kicko at 2:45 p.m. Rooftop @ 230 Fifth Ave. Free with RSVP laliga.es/elclasiconyc
La Liga claims 1.6 billion fans globally, and it hopes to add a few more with a viewing party at 230 Fifth, taking over the entire bar to bring some of the same excitement the rest of the world feels about this match. All the action will be screened live starting at 2:45 p.m. on TVs around the bar, but the fun starts well before that at 10 a.m. Arrive early to kick a ball around a mini soccer pitch, check out an
“interactive soccer tech zone and see exhibits from both teams. Spanish soccer legend Raul Gonzalez Blanco, who led our own New York Cosmos to a North American Soccer League victory in 2015 as his last act before retiring, will be on hand among other special guests. The match itself promises to be a memorable one. Barcelona is hungry after their Champions League exit this week, especially the player widely considered to be the best of all time, Lionel Messi. Though opinions are just as strong that the man who truly deserves that title is Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo. Watching them try to settle the question with a cocktail in your hand should be a memorable way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Who said 2017 would be a down year for the Yankees? Okay, I’m getting ahead of myself, but the Bronx Bombers are off to their best start since 2010 thanks to wins in nine of their last 10 games. How the Knicks can really make Porzingis love New York New York has to do a few things before KP can truly love playing in NY. JOE PANTORNO @joepantorno
joseph.pantorno@metro.us
On top of the Carmelo Anthony drama, Derrick Rose’s impending free agency and the Joakim Noah embarrassment, there looked to be even more trouble brewing within the New York Knicks last week when Kristaps Porzingis skipped his end-of-season interviews with Phil Jackson. He also revealed that he would take an extended trip back to his home country of Latvia, where he would stay until later in the summer.
It obviously got the rumor mill churning that Porzingis was unhappy with the team and wanted out. Before he left for Latvia on Thursday, Porzingis attempted to put panicked minds at ease when he told Marc Berman of the New York Post that he loves playing at Madison Square Garden. It’s understandable for many to think that he was just going through the motions in expressing his affection for New York, especially because he didn’t reveal why he missed his meeting with Jackson. ESPN’s Ian Begley reported that Porzingis was “frustrated with the Knicks’ lack of direction,” per sources. Contrary to popular belief, the Knicks have a chance to ease Porzingis’
frustrations instead of their usual bull-in-the-china-shop technique, which is destroying most good things. First, they must deal Carmelo Anthony, who will turn 33 on May 29 and is owed over $26 million in each of the next two seasons. That’s big money for a player who has proven he can’t will his team to win. It’s time for him to waive his no-trade clause and get dealt to a contender where he can provide All-Star support instead of being the big man on campus. Get a high-round draft pick or a proven, productive player(s) in return for him and start building around Porzingis. They also must decide on an offense and commit to it.
The Knicks should think about making Kristaps Porzingis the face of the franchise soon. GETTY IMAGES
Ditch the triangle if the rest of the Knicks can’t get on board with it. If Porzingis has support and the culture within the locker room changes toward the system, then, by all means, institute it. Once you commit to a scheme though, stay there for an entire season. Porzingis has mentioned that he likes the triangle offense after playing under it full-time during his rookie season, so it
shouldn’t seem farfetched that it’s a legitimate option moving forward. The Knicks also need to acquire a real point guard This isn’t an attack on Rose, but his style of play was not the best for Porzingis’ development. There is a reason why they call the 7-foot-3 Latvian a unicorn. He can score from anywhere on the floor and needs to be fed often.
Rose on average attempted 15.3 field goals per game, second behind Anthony. Porzingis’ 14.9 per game was third, but with a player of his caliber, he should be shooting as many times as Anthony did last season, which was 18.8 attempts per night. Getting a pass-first point guard, whether it is through the market or the draft, could see Porzingis’ numbers hit new levels next season.
