A week after one-time National Football League star Aaron Hernandez killed himself in his prison cell, lawyers asked a Massachusetts judge to vacate his 2015 conviction for murdering an acquaintance. In addition to clearing Hernandez’s name, the legal move, at the behest of his family including his girlfriend, Shayanna Jenkins Hernandez, could help protect his estate from liability in civil

lawsuits filed by the survivors of his alleged victims. The filing, made on Tuesday at Massachusetts Superior Court in Fall River, is based on a quirk of Massachusetts law that allows a court to reverse a verdict if the person convicted dies before he has exhausted his appeals process. REUTERS

The threat of a U.S. government shutdown this weekend appeared to recede after President Donald Trump backed away from a demand that Congress include funding for his planned border wall with Mexico in a spending bill. In remarks to conservative news media outlets that were confirmed by the White House, Trump said on Monday he may wait until Republicans begin drafting the budget blueprint for

the fiscal year that starts on Oct. 1 to seek funds for the wall. Trump’s fellow Republicans control both chambers of Congress but the current funding bill, which has to be passed by Friday night, will need 60 votes to clear the 100-member Senate, where Republicans hold 52 seats and so will have to get some Democratic support. Democratic leaders had said it would not get it if funds for the wall were included. REUTERS

Muslim-operated homeless shelter for women opens The Amal Women’s Center says it is open to all women who need it. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

On a Dorchester street lined with three-story residences, one green house with a vibrant purple door stands out. The door opens to the Amal Women’s Center, a transitional home for women and children operated by the Muslim social services organization ICNA Relief. Opened this week, it marks the first Muslimoperated homeless shelter in Massachusetts, according to Malika MacDonald-Rushdan, ICNA Relief’s state field office director. Amal means “hope in Arabic, MacDonaldRushdan explained. The door’s vibrant purple color signifies that feeling. “We hope to ease the transition, giving these women the support and tools they need to gain self-sufficiency, she said. Self-driving cars allowed to drive on more Boston roads Self-driving cars have been cleared to tackle more roads in Boston. Cambridge-based autonomous car company nuTonomy has been testing its self-driving vehicles in South Boston’s Raymond L. Flynn Marine Park since January. The cars, which do have a person behind the wheel in case of emergencies during testing, now have the green light to branch out into the Seaport and Fort Point neighborhoods. NuTonomy CEO and co-founder Karl Iagnemma said in a statement that four months of testing within the marine park’s 191 acres have yielded “excellent results.” But, he said the expanded testing boundaries will present additional obstacles for the self-driving cars. Those new obstacles will include traffic signals, bridges, overpasses and underpasses, multilane roads and a rotary, he said. The cars will have “increased interaction with vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.” The park that the cars have been driving in has no traffic lights, but does allow for some interaction with pedestrians, cyclists and other cars. Still, the new testing areas will

have significantly more activity. “This development will allow the sophisticated autonomous vehicle software system we’ve pioneered to quickly adapt to Boston’s complex driving environment,” Iagnemma said. As has been the company’s practice, a nuTonomy engineer will continue to ride along in the car, ready to take over controls if necessary. If testing continues to go well, the program can expand to allow the cars to drive during more difficult conditions, like in the rain or at night. City officials wrote to Iagnemma and the nuTonomy team on Monday, congratulating them on the autonomous vehicle testing so far. The letter included the new cityapproved roads but noted that use of MassPort road-

ways is dependent upon a separate agreement with the state Port Authority. “Supporting safe roadways now and in the future is a vital part of creating sustainable, equitable modes of transportation in our city, as outlined in our Go Boston 2030 plan,” Boston Transportation Department Commissioner Gina Fiandaca said in a statement. “I’m pleased nuTonomy has safely tested over 230 miles, and look forward to the next stage of this innovative partnership.” KRISTIN TOUSSAINT

Independent Film Festival Boston turns 15 The annual cinema celebration is back with more than a hundred screenings. SEAN BURNS @MetroBOS

It’s the most wonderful time of the year again. The 15th annual Independent Film Festival Boston begins this evening, kicking off holy week for the city’s cinephiles. Unspooling at the Somerville, Brattle and Coolidge Corner Theatres, the nonprofit IFFBoston and its allvolunteer staff showcase independent films in independent venues, far from the madding multiplexes. There’s also a phalanx of panels and parties where mov-

iemakers and movie lovers can come together once more to educate and celebrate. The Opening Night selection, “Stumped,” tells the inspiring story of Boston’s own Will Lautzenheiser, who lost both arms and legs to a bacterial infection and started a new career in stand-up comedy to cope. In 2014 he became the third patient to undergo a doublearm transplant here at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The filmmakers, Lautzenheiser and even his surgeons will all be at the Somerville screening. Writer-director Brett Haley came to IFFBoston two years ago with the surprise sleeper hit “I’ll See You in My Dreams.” He’s reteamed with that film’s co-star,

Alexis Bledel tells us the most frightening thing about ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Today, Margaret Atwood’s 1985 dystopian novel, “The Handmaid’s Tale,” debuts as a television series on Hulu, with an all-star cast that includes Elisabeth Moss, Ray Fiennes and Alexis Bledel. Set in the not-toodistant-future world of Gilead, a Christianfundamentalist theocracy has overthrown the U.S. government and women are stripped of their rights — not able to hold jobs or bank

accounts. Due to an epidemic of infertility, fertile women are sent to become handmaids for the upper classes, which includes having sex with men in the presence of their wives for the purpose of bearing children for the family. Scared yet? For Bledel, who plays the handmaid Ofglen in the series, the most frightening thing about the story is that it hits awfully close to reality:

“The fact that many of the things in it are not made up [is what scares me most],” she says. “All of this has happened somewhere in the world — these are things humans have done or experienced somewhere. It gives it a frighteningly real aspect.” The election of Donald Trump as our 45th president adds even more relevancy to “The Handmaid’s Tale,” especially considering the

recent move to defund Planned Parenthood on the state level. The government’s regulation over women’s bodies is a theme that runs rampant in both the book and series: “Watching the show does bring up thoughts on women’s reproductive rights for people,” Bledel admits. Unlike many a think piece, the 35 year old didn’t get to compare the current nationalistleaning administration

to the one in the show with the crew because she wrapped filming one day post-election. “I remember having a very different feeling internally because I was still processing the news,” she recalls. “But on set, it was the same set that I knew before. Everyone was doing great work and in good spirits. If I was there longer, I’m sure I would have had many conversations about how it undoubtedly felt

different.” At the end of the day, Bledel hopes that the show illustrates the dangers of apathy and sparks productive conversations: “The world keeps moving forward at a more rapid pace than ever, and it requires action. It requires a response.” The first three episodes of “The Handmaid’s Tale” premiere today on Hulu. JENNIFER LOGUE

Tom Hardy chases down a thief, may secretly be a superhero Tom Hardy is a real life hero and I’m here for it. The “Taboo” actor reportedly chased down a thief in London, and it was very acrobatic. Baby’s been studying Parkour! According to Page Six, the 39-year-old sprinted after a thief who crashed a stolen moped and fled. A witness in Richmond, London, shared how Hardy literally vaulted over walls, chasing the thief through a back garden before proudly announcing “I caught the c—t.” What an actual dreamboat. looked furious.” Hardy reportedly patted the thief down before making a citizen’s arrest. And according to Pullen’s girlfriend, he did not disappoint. “He looked as mad as he does on telly,” she said. So there you have it. Tom Hardy is some sort of real-life crimefighting babe. Like a hotter, less blue Captain Planet in clothes that are appropriate and actually fit. Which is chill, because we are sorely in need of a pouty lipped British superhero with a myriad of bad tattoos. Thank you, Tom Hardy! RACHAEL VAUGHAN CLEMMONS

Do’s and don’ts for apartment hunting in Boston

5

Everything you need to know for finding the perfect pad. MATT JUUL @MetroBOS

5

letters@metro.us

Apartment hunting in the city is no easy task, especially if you’re looking for a place to hang your hat at the last minute. Who has the time to sift through all those listings and paperwork? Luckily, Brooklinebased real estate agent Keith Florian is here with five essential do’s and don’ts for landing your perfect pad in Boston.

1

Don’t accept the first place you find

Take your time to see three, four places so you can get an idea of what you like and what you don’t like. Many times people just grab the first thing that they see and they end up regretting it just a couple of months into it.

Take the hassle out of apartment hunting. ISTOCK

2

Do take the time to scout out neighborhoods

Location, location, location. You want to make sure that you have an idea of exactly where you

want to live. Boston is really small, so you want to make sure that you have good access to public transportation and major routes to wherever you’re working. Whatever’s important to

WE CAN HELP PAY YOUR HEATING BILLS! You may qualify for ABCD’s Fuel Assistance Program and be eligible for as much as $1,100 towards your heating costs (oil, gas, or electric).

you or your roommates.

3

Sign a contract

If you don’t sign a contract with a broker, that means they don’t have fiduciary duties to

you. Then they’re in the listing agent’s interest, so to speak. They’re interest is to just get the commission. The best thing to do is to sign a contract with somebody who’s looking out for your interests.

Do find a trustworthy agent

A lot of time I’m finding that students and even business professionals, are going on their own to get a place. They’re not having representation and they’re not signing contracts with people, and that’s actually a very bad thing. Honestly, you’re going to pay a broker fee, whether it’s to the list agent or to your agent, the buyer’s agent. You might as well have a business professional who’s fighting on your behalf.

Don’t rent an apartment without insurance Renter’s insurance is very cheap. I think for the whole year it’s like $100-$150, and it will cover your stuff. If you’ve only got your clothes or whatever, it’s not a big deal. But if you’ve got expensive items that you want to make sure are kept safe in case something gets broken into or whatever, it’s something that you want to keep in the back of your mind.

Celtics-Bulls: May the best guard win Game 5 of the bestof-seven series is tonight at the Garden. MATT BURKE @burke_metro

The style of play in the NBA has changed considerably over the years, with the era of the backto-the-basket big man long gone and the era of the 3-point jacking guard never more in style than it is today. No doubt, this Celtics-Bulls series will be decided by which team’s group of guards play better. Rajon Rondo (broken thumb) isn’t expected to play in Game 5 Wednesday night (8 p.m., TNT, CSNNE), but Jimmy Butler will be there in full force. he’s a great actor,” Butler said. “Acting tough, that’s what he does. But I don’t think he’s about that, and I’m the wrong guy to get in my face. … We’re not going

Malcolm in the middle

to sit here and get in each other’s faces like that. Like I said, he’s not about that life. So, he’s calming down.” The Texas boys (Butler is from Houston,

Smart from Dallas) stared each other down, nose-to-nose, in Game 4 and Smart was asked this week if he wanted to have another chat with the Bulls guard.

“It ain’t hard to find me,” Smart told CBS Boston. Smart will never be confused with Steph Curry offensively as he’s shot 6-for-16 from 3-point range in the series and is averaging just 8.5 points per game. But Bradley will be relied upon to help Isaiah Thomas out offensively. Bradley has averaged 12.2 points per game in the series thus far, scoring just eight points in Sunday’s 104-95 Celtics win. Thomas has been magnificent, averaging 25.5 points per game. A good chunk of his scoring has been done at the free throw stripe as he got to the line 12 times in Game 1, 13 times in Game 2 and 13 times in Game 4. Interestingly enough, he did not have one free throw attempt in the Celtics’ best game of the series — Game 3 — in which the Celtics won, 104-87.

Several times this offseason, it looked as though Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler would wind up as a member of the Saints as Butler and New Orleans had a dollar figure in place if he was to be traded. But both the Saints and Patriots have gotten cold feet on a trade in recent days, with the Saints looking like they will keep the No. 32 overall pick in Thursday’s NFL draft. GETTY IMAGES

Aries Get involved in a program that will encourage good health. Taking better care of your physical and financial needs is highlighted. Think before you take a risk.

Libra Changes at home can be made that will help you save money. A move or change in the way you handle your financial affairs should stabilize your life.

Taurus Personal gains are heading in your direction. Accept the inevitable and welcome the changes that will give you the push you need to pursue more ambitious goals.

Scorpio A personal connection with someone close to you will encourage you to explore the unknown and consider doing things differently.

Gemini Deal with unfinished business. Take on institutions or government agencies that are taking advantage of you or your community. Get the facts and speak up.

Sagittarius You know what’s best, and you know what to do, so don’t allow anyone to play emotional mind games with you. Put your trust in yourself.

Cancer Take charge and don’t budge if you feel it’s not in your best interest. Don’t worry about a stalemate. The results will turn in your favor. Let your intuition guide you.

Capricorn Build your assets, take care of investments and make changes at home that will help cut costs. Financial growth is good, but indulgence is not.

Leo Look at all aspects of an agreement, and negotiate on your own behalf. Knowing what you want and what’s expected of you will help you find success. Initiate change.

Aquarius Emotions will surface if things don’t go your way financially. Use common sense and be practical when dealing with change that could get costly. Call in favors.

Virgo Set up a meeting, interview or talk with an expert in order to help you make decisions regarding your current position and future pursuits.

Pisces Plan your actions with precision and look over the fine print when dealing with documents. Discuss your concerns but don’t disclose information. EUGENIA LAST
