SPINE ALIGNED. WORKOUTS RESTORED. Jason is a real patient. A successful lawyer, he was well prepared for his next career move when appointed municipal court judge. But nothing could prepare him for the chronic back pain that was impacting his life, the remnants of a high school football injury and herniated disc. After consulting with surgeons at Jefferson Health, he underwent spinal fusion surgery. Today, Jason is back in court – and the gym. That’s freedom restored.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday ordered Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to review the U.S. government’s role in school policy, which supporters cheered as the first step in creating more local control in education and critics worried could lead to lower quality schools in poorer neighborhoods. DeVos has 300 days “to review and, if necessary, modify and repeal regulations and guidance

issued by the Department of Education with a clear mandate to identify places where D.C. has overstepped its legal authority,” said Rob Goad, a Department of Education official, according to a transcript of a White House call with reporters. REUTERS

Fox News is facing renewed legal claims that it mistreated non-white employees. Eleven current and former Fox employees, including news anchor Kelly Wright, filed an amended lawsuit in New York state court claiming they were demeaned, humiliated, paid less than white coworkers, and passed over for promotions. The lawsuit was originally filed last month by two Fox News payroll employees.

The complaint added class action racial discrimination claims. Separately on Tuesday, a former Fox News accounts payable specialist, Adasa Blanco, filed a lawsuit in federal court in New York claiming her complaints about racial discrimination were ignored and she was forced to quit in 2013 as a result. A Fox News representative said the network vehemently denies the claims and “will vigorously defend these cases. REUTERS

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter has canceled her speech planned for this week at the University of California’s Berkeley campus after a dispute with school officials, who feared violent protests over whether a safe venue could be found. “There will be no speech,” Coulter wrote in an email to Reuters on Wednesday in which she also criticized two conservative groups who had originally

sponsored the event, saying they were no longer supporting her. “I looked over my shoulder and my allies had joined the other team,” she wrote. “I have no sponsor, no lawyer, no court order,” she added. “I can’t vindicate constitutional rights on my own. I was just supposed to give the speech.” REUTERS

TWITTER POSTS STRONG USER GROWTH

5

Shares of Twitter Inc. jumped on Wednesday after the microblogging service reported better-than-expected user growth in the first quarter, although its revenue fell for the first time. The surprising acceleration, which Twitter attributed to new features and heightened user interest in political news, followed several quarters of stalled user growth that raised questions about Chief Executive

Jack Dorsey’s leadership and speculation the platform may be bought by a bigger company. Twitter reported yearly growth of 6 percent in monthly active users, a key performance indicator for social networking services typically calculated by taking the number of users who have logged in and logged out during the 30day period, to 328 million. On a quarterly basis, Twitter added nine million monthly users. REUTERS

Three months after a 50-year-old Northeast Philly man was struck and killed by a car, the off-duty police officer who was driving was hit with criminal charges. Philadelphia police officer Adam Soto was charged Wednesday with involuntary manslaughter and homicide by vehicle for the Jan. 31 death of Daniel Dimitri. First Assistant District Attorney Kathleen Martin declined to comment on whether two other offduty officers reportedly involved in the crash, one of whom was allegedly driving another car and one who was a passenger in Soto’s car, could face any charges. “We’re continuing to investigate,” s h e said. Soto, 25, and the other off-duty officer who was driving, officer Tony Forest, 24, were both suspended for 30 days with intent to dismiss. Both are three-year veterans of the force. Dimitri’s sister, Cherylann Dimitri, wants a full investigation and criminal charges filed against all three men allegedly involved in the crash. “They murdered my brother,” she said at a news conference held Wednesday with family members outside the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office. “When you’re driving that fast, 80 to 90 mph, that’s murder.”

Soto may have been drag racing with another off-duty officer, Cherylann said. Dimitri died after being hit around 11:30 a.m., while crossing the street near Cottman and Algon avenues near Northeast High School. Soto was driving a silver 2015 Subaru “at a high rate of speed” at the time of the crash, police said. According to the original police report released in February, he told investigators that as he was driving eastbound, Dimitri “ran across the street [non-crosswalk] into his path of travel” and he “was unable to avoid hitting the pedestrian.” A chef at Chuck’s Alibi seafood restaurant, Dimitri was reportedly crossing the street to catch a bus to work to pick up his paycheck at the time. He was pronounced dead at Aria-Torresdale Hospital an hour later. P o lice said Wednesd a y their Adam Soto PPD investigation found Forest “was operating his personal vehicle recklessly at the same time and in the same direction as Officer Soto,” but did not comment on rumors that the two offduty cops were drag-racing at the time. Soto’s attorney, Fortunato Perri Jr., denied the charges and told Fox 29, “The evidence will show this was a catastrophic accident and not a crime.” Dimitri, of Rhawnhurst, said she suspected her brother’s death would be swept under the rug. “A lot of witnesses were very actually really upset that nothing about this hit the media the next day,” she said.

Scientists have developed a fluid-filled womblike bag known as an extra-uterine support device that could transform care for extremely premature babies, significantly improving chances of survival. In pre-clinical studies with lambs, the researchers were able to mimic the womb environment and the functions of the placenta, giving premature offspring a crucial opportunity to develop their lungs and other organs. Around 30,000 babies in the U.S. alone are born critically early — at between 23 and 26 weeks of gestation, the researchers told reporters in a telephone briefing. At that age, a human baby weighs little more than 500 grams, its lungs are not able to cope with air and its chances of survival are low. Death rates are up to 70 percent and those who do survive face life-long disability. “These infants have an urgent need for a bridge between the mother’s womb and the outside world,” said Alan Flake, a specialist surgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia who led the development of the new device. His team’s aim, he said,

was to develop an extrauterine system where extremely premature babies can be suspended in fluid-filled chambers for a vital few weeks to bring them over the 28-week threshold, when their life chances are dramatically improved. It could take up to another 10 years, but by then he hopes to have a licensed device in which babies born very prematurely are given the chance to develop in fluid-filled chambers, rather than lying in incubators being artificially ventilated. “This system is potentially far superior to what hospitals can currently do for a 23-week-old baby born at the cusp of viability,” Flake said. “This could establish a new standard of care for this subset of extremely premature infants.” The team spent three years evolving their system through a series of four prototypes — beginning with a glass incubator tank and progressing to the current fluid-filled bag. Six preterm lambs tested in the most recent prototype were physiologically equivalent to a 23- or 24-week-gestation human baby and were able to grow in a temperaturecontrolled, near-sterile environment, Flake said. The scientists made amniotic fluid in their lab and set up the system so that this flowed into and out of the bag. REUTERS

COP ARRESTED Police officer charged with child porn possession A Philly cop was charged this week with sexually abusing children and possessing child porn, authorities announced. Emmanuel Folly, 25, a threeyear veteran of the force, was suspended for 30 days with intent to dismiss after he was charged on Tuesday, the police department announced. Folly’s home on the 3300 block of N. 15th Street was first identified in March 2016 after

Special Victims Unit investigating child pornography being shared on the internet allegedly traced one machine’s IP address to that location, police said. A warrant was executed at Folly’s home where he lived with his parents on Nov. 17, 2016, and investigators seized a laptop, desktop computer and tablet, all of which were submitted to the FBI for analysis. An attorney representing Folly didn’t respond to a call for comment. SAM NEWHOUSE

New York real estate scion Robert Durst GETTY IMAGES

Testimony: Slain friend of Robert Durst once posed as his missing wife Real estate scion Robert Durst, whose ties to three slayings were portrayed in HBO series “The Jinx,” had his close friend Susan Berman make a phone call pretending to be his missing wife, a former acquaintance of Berman testified on Wednesday. Durst, 74, is charged with first-degree murder in connection with Berman’s 2000 death in Los Angeles. Prosecutors allege Durst killed Berman, a writer and the daughter of an organized crime figure, because of what she knew about his wife’s unsolved disappearance. Hollywood producer Lynda Obst, who worked with Berman to develop a film about her life story, testified that decades ago Berman made a confession to her while explaining the lengths a person would go to protect a loved one. “She said she once called Albert Einstein medical center for him and said she was (his wife) Kathie,” Obst testified, referring to Durst’s former wife, Kathleen. Under cross-examination, Obst acknowledged that when she was interviewed for “The Jinx” in 2011 she never mentioned what Berman shared with her about the phone call. “I didn’t remember it then,” Obst said. Police found Berman, 55, shot to death in her

home, shortly after it was revealed police in New York had reopened an investigation into the disappearance and presumed slaying of Kathleen Durst. HBO’s “The Jinx” in 2015 chronicled Durst’s ties to his wife’s unsolved disappearance, Berman’s slaying and Durst’s 2003 acquittal in the killing and dismemberment of a Texas neighbor. Prosecutors formally charged Durst with killing Berman a day after HBO aired the final episode, in which Durst was recorded muttering to himself offcamera, “What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.” In February, Dr. Albert Kuperman, retired dean of Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, testified that in 1982 he received a phone call from a woman identifying herself as Kathleen, a day after she was last seen alive, saying she would have to miss an appointment due to illness. Durst’s trial is not expected to begin before next year but a judge is allowing some witnesses to testify early in the case, preserving their statements in the event they die before he is tried. He has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors have argued Durst, whose wealth they estimate at $100 million, could have witnesses eliminated. Durst’s attorneys have ridiculed that. REUTERS

Front-runner unexpectedly withdraws from Canada Conservative Party race The front-runner in the race to become the next leader of Canada’s Conservatives dropped out on Wednesday mere hours before the final televised debate, stunning party insiders and throwing the contest open to two remaining favorites. Reality TV star and venture capitalist Kevin O’Leary said he was withdrawing from the 14-way contest to replace

former Prime Minister Stephen Harper because he had not gained enough support in the French-speaking province of Quebec, where elections are often decided. “I worked really hard and I couldn’t move the needle” in Quebec, O’Leary told reporters, standing next to Maxime Bernier, a former foreign minister whose candidacy O’Leary said he would support. The Conservative Party of Canada will decide its new

leader by May 27 to face Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the 2019 national election. “We are going to bring our forces together now so that we can win this race and then beat Justin Trudeau in 2019,” said Bernier, a Quebec libertarian who was neck-and-neck with O’Leary for much of the race. O’Leary, who gained fame as a brusque dealmaker on the reality show “Shark Tank,” had no political experience and tenuous ties to the party

but stole the spotlight because of an outsized media profile and the support of Canadians who saw the businessman as a breath of fresh air. Bernier, by contrast, is a second-generation politician and free-market champion whose previous brush with fame came when he was dumped from Harper’s cabinet after leaving confidential documents at the house of a girlfriend with links to organized crime. The Trump administration said on Wednesday it aimed to push North Korea into dismantling its nuclear and missile programs through tougher international sanctions and diplomatic pressure, and remained open to negotiations to bring this about. The U.S. stance, which appeared to signal a willingness to exhaust non-military options in spite of repeated warnings that “all options are on the table,â€? came in a statement following an unusual White Househosted briefing for the entire Senate. The statement from Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats described North Korea as “an urgent national security threat and top foreign policy priority.â€? Trump has vowed to prevent North Korea from being able to hit the United States with a nuclear missile, a capability experts say it could have some time after 2020. “The president’s approach aims to pressure North Korea into dismantling its nuclear, ballistic missile, and proliferation programs by tightening economic sanctions and pursuing diplomatic measures with our allies and regional partners,â€? it said. “The United States seeks stability and the peaceful denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. We remain open

to negotiations towards that goal. However, we remain prepared to defend ourselves and our allies.â€? U.S. lawmakers have been seeking a clear White House strategy following repeated North Korean missile tests and fears that it could conduct a sixth nuclear bomb test. While the administration has said repeatedly that military strikes remain an option, officials have stressed tougher sanctions given the risks of massive North Korean retaliation. Democratic Sen. Christopher Coons told reporters after the White House briefing that military options were discussed. “It was a sobering briefing in which it was clear just how much thought and planning was going into preparing military options, if called for, and a diplomatic strategy that strikes me as clear-eyed and well proportioned,â€? Coons said. Tillerson will chair a ministerial meeting of the U.N. Security Council on Friday that is expected to discuss tougher steps, which U.S. officials say could include an oil embargo, banning North Korea’s airline, intercepting cargo ships and punishing Chinese and other foreign banks doing business with Pyongyang. However to be effective, such steps will require the full support of China, North Korea’s neighbor and only ally. China objects to North Korea’s weapons development, and has called repeatedly for a return to international negotiations, but U.S. officials have said Washington sees no value in returning to talks until Pyongyang shows it is serious about denuclearization. It was unclear whether the order would be enacted by President Donald Trump, who has vowed to pull out from NAFTA — a U.S., Mexico and Canada trade pact — if he cannot win better terms for America.

The White House is considering a draft executive order to withdraw the United States from the North American Free Trade Agreement, a senior Trump administration official said on Wednesday. The action under consideration could signal heightened prospects that one of the world’s biggest trading blocs could unravel in an economically damaging dispute. The possible executive order, first reported

by Politico, sent stocks and currencies falling in Mexico and Canada. Investors were rethinking their assumptions that Trump would back away from some of the drastic actions on trade that he had promised during the presidential campaign. “It is a clear indication that they [in the White House] are wanting changes but we will have to see what emerges,â€? said Paul Ferley, assistant chief economist at Royal Bank of Canada.Â

Trump has long accused Mexico of destroying U.S. jobs and recently ramped up his criticism of Canada, saying last week that Ottawa’s protection of its dairy industry was “unfair. Trump this week ordered 20 percent tariffs on imports of Canadian softwood lumber, setting a tense tone as the three countries prepared to renegotiate the 23-year-old trade pact. Trump’s plan to slash business taxes seen as ‘guidepost’ by congressional GOP The proposals were unveiled at the White House by Trump economic adviser Gary Cohn and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, who called them “core principles” that would be worked on with Congress to produce a bill that can be passed. President Donald Trump on Wednesday proposed slashing tax rates for businesses and on overseas corporate profits returned to the country in a plan that his fellow Republi-

cans in Congress generally welcomed but viewed as an opening gambit. The Trump administration touted the president’s blueprint - which also calls for raising standard deductions for individuals, reducing the number of tax brackets and repealing inheritance taxes on estates — as a landmark proposal just days before Trump marks his 100th day in office on Saturday. While Republicans, who control the House of Representatives and the Senate, have long eyed tax cuts, Trump’s proposal may be unpalatable to party fiscal hawks. It lacks plans for raising new revenue and could potentially add billions of dollars to

the federal deficit. The planned cuts would pay for themselves through economic growth, and by reducing tax deductions and closing loopholes, Mnuchin said. “Our objective is to make U.S. businesses the most competitive in the world,” he said. “The president is determined to unleash economic growth for businesses.” House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and the top Republicans on the congressional tax-writing committees welcomed the proposals, while leaving space for details to change as legislation evolves. “The principles out-

lined by the Trump Administration today will serve as critical guideposts” as Congress and the administration work on changes to taxation, they said in a statement. Details of Trump’s plan emerged before the formal announcement. Ryan, a longtime champion of a major tax restructuring, expressed optimism about it on Wednesday morning, even though it did not include a “border adjustment” tax on imports that he has pushed. That idea was part of initiatives floated by House Republicans as a way to offset revenue losses resulting from steep tax cuts. “We’re in agreement on 80 percent and on the

taxes and a simplification of the process, but all that is in an ideal world,” said Andre Bakhos, managing director at Janlyn Capital in Bernardsville, New Jersey. “The market will not interpret the plan negatively, but there are obstacles in that course, just like with anything that Trump says and does.” Trump’s plan would cut the income tax rate paid by public corporations to 15 percent from 35 percent and reduce the top tax rate assessed on pass-through businesses, including small partnerships and sole proprietorships, to 15 percent from 39.6 percent, the White House said. While public corporations’ profits or losses are taxed directly, “passthrough” businesses are taxed under the individual income tax code. Mnuchin also said that Trump was proposing that corporations bring offshore profits into the country at a rate well below the current 35 percent rate. He did not say what that rate would be, but said the administration was working with Congress on a low rate. REUTERS

(remaining) 20 percent we’re in the same ballpark,” he said. Senior Democrats assailed the plan, including its underpinning ideology of “trickle-down” economics. Ron Wyden, the top Democrat on the Senate tax committee, called it “unprincipled” and said it would produce tax cuts for the wealthy, conflicts for the president because of his own business interests, “crippling debt for America and crumbs for the working people.” U.S. stocks pared gains on Wednesday after the plan was unveiled. While Wall Street has been optimistic about the prospect of corporate tax cuts since Trump’s election in November, the stocks rally has stalled lately because of a lack of clarity about Trump’s policies and concern over his failure to push through a healthcare bill. Some analysts said investors were aware of the long road ahead before any tax bill is passed. “We have a pretty good idea that he [Trump] is targeting lower corporate taxes, lower individual

Crabs invade Bay of Pigs Cuba’s Bay of Pigs has been invaded again, this time not by U.S.-backed anti-Castro forces, but by millions of red, yellow and black landcrabs. Each year, after the first spring rains, the crabs march for days from the surrounding forests to the bay on Cuba’s southern coast to spawn in the sea, wreaking havoc along the way. At dawn and dusk they emerge, scuttling sideways toward the sea, climbing up house walls and carpeting the coastal road that curves around the bay. The stench of crushed crab fills the air and their sharp shells puncture car tires. “Thirty to 40 can enter without you even realizing it, said Edian Villazon, who runs a food hut opposite the sea, which does not serve up crab meat. Cubans believe this type is toxic. “We have to always keep the door shut. The Bay of Pigs, where in 1961 Cuban exiles

landed in a failed attempt to end Fidel Castro’s revolution, lies within a national park where 80 percent of Cuba’s endemic birds, along with crocodiles and other wildlife, can be observed. With its deep sinkholes, coral reefs and turquoise waters, the bay is known as one of Cuba’s best spots for diving. Visitors have spiked in recent years, in tandem with the overall tourism boom since the U.S.-Cuban detente. “It’s very surprising and impressive to see so many crabs in one go and

to watch them crossing so quickly, said 36-year-old French tourist Emilie Lannegrand, adding it was “a little heartbreaking to see so many crushed on the road. As cars speed by, some swerving to avoid the 10-legged crustaceans, the cracks of carapaces zing through the air. That does not threaten the survival of the two prolific species, Gecarcinus ruricola and lateralis, which are not endemic to Cuba, said Jorge Luis Jimenez, a science ministry official who works in the park. Similar crab migrations occur in other parts of Cuba at the same time of the year, as well as in some other special ecosystems such as Australia’s Christmas Island. At the Bay of Pigs, the adult crabs return to their forest burrows after releasing clouds of eggs and are joined a couple of months later by the baby crabs which hatched at sea, said Jimenez. ESPN’s Kolber: ‘Philly people have an edge, and that fits me’ In an exclusive Q&A with Metro, the sideline reporter and studio host talks NFL draft, being a woman in sports and replacing Chris Berman. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

Few women in sports have had as dazzling a career in broadcasting as ESPN’s Suzy Kolber. From studio host to sideline reporter, Kolber’s Philly roots helped forge her love of sports. After starting as an intern while at school at the University of Miami, the trailblazing sports personality started at ESPN in 1996 and hasn’t left since. This fall she’ll host “Monday Night Countdown” as well as a variety of other NFL programs. Metro caught up with Kolber amid preparations to cover the green room at the NFL draft in her hometown of Philadelphia: The NFL draft in Philly is looking like it will be huge. The entire Ben Franklin Parkway has been taken over. You’ve spent the majority of your career working closely with the league. What are you thoughts about the heights it has

reached? What’s funny is, in my neighborhood, I have a daughter who is 9 years old. I drop her off and pick her up at sporting events and we run into parents of her friends and it’s unbelievable how people ask, “Are you ready to enjoy some downtime?” and for all of us who work in this business all we can do it laugh. It doesn’t really end until after the draft, when it ramps down. When the

heavily research each one of the kids that’s there, this year there are 22 in the green room. It makes the whole experience to me so much fun and I can do my job so much better if I really know them, their parents’ names, where they came from, their experiences — and many came from a really tough background. There are so many single moms, and knowing their stories makes it so meaningful to stand in the room and

“I always reminded myself how fortunate I was that [Philly] was the home team.” NFL goes dark I usually disappear. I time it to my daughter’s last day of school — and I have it timed, actually. There’s a mandatory minicamp second week of June, I work that week and I am done. It’s year-round and that’s the only break. Where does covering the draft and talking to kids who are in the midst of a life-altering moment rank among all of the duties you have covering the NFL? One of my favorite roles that I have is the green room on the first night of the draft. It is the ultimate reality TV show. What I enjoy so much about it is that I take a lot of time to

watch that kid’s name called. You grew up in the Philly area and you work in sports. Do you still have an emotional connection to the teams here? There was a very deeprooted love of sports in my family, which included my granddad Bernard Freedman, my mom’s dad, who would listen to Phillies games on the radio if they weren’t on TV. We had tickets, my dad was in marketing and advertising and he was very tied in to the teams and athletes themselves. We typically had half the season for the Sixers, half the season for the Phillies,

we went to a handful of Flyers games and a couple of Eagles games. There was something always in my heart that I was just born with this love of the NFL. When I was really little I was a huge Dolphins fan. It goes back to the undefeated season. I loved Bob Griese and the logo — something about that. To have guys like Dr. J and George McGinnis and Doug Collins, that was the home team — the Phillies, Carlton, Schmidt and those guys — that’s the home team. Bobby Clarke, Dave Shultz, how lucky was that? I had an appreciation for good teams and being fortunate. Did the local media and fan base help encourage your love for sports? I wonder if some of it was a subconscious thing, too. You don’t even realize as a little kid that you are constantly submersed in it. I remember the local papers, some of which aren’t in existence anymore, but being so much in the fabric of Philadelphia and taking pride too in that. Philadelphia sports fans have a reputation — it’s hard-core — and Philly people have an edge and that fits me, my personality. I am old-school and hard-core. I love that approach.

Suzy Kolber’s personal one-on-ones after each player is selected have become synonymous with NFL draft coverage on ESPN. GETTY IMAGES

What has your experience been as a woman working in this industry? I would say that from the time that I started when there were practically no women, now it’s fairly prevalent. But back when I was in college and interning in the business and initially covering Miami sports, at times it could be me in a room with 250 guys at a championship press conference, and I sat in the room and asked the first question. It never felt out of place for me because sports has always been a part of my life and it came naturally for me. I never felt throughout my career that I was treated differently or had an issue of disrespect, never had a curious locker room incident. I would be hard-pressed to remember a time I wasn’t

treated right as a woman.

down” to reflect that.

What will it be like sitting at the anchor’s desk for “Monday Night Countdown” and the other NFL shows after the departure of Chris Berman? I’ll say this in terms of appreciating Chris and what he did for ESPN: When I was saying the final on-air goodbye in our Super Bowl show, I choked up because there is a true deep appreciation for what he did — what he did for sports television and for ESPN. To be an iconic figure in this business is really incredible. I have a deep respect for everything he did. ... I am very aware of the responsibility for all of us moving forward and I’d say the biggest thing is the way people with TV is different now. I want “Monday Night Count-

Are there any NFL draft storylines this year that are of particular interest to you? My A-plus is the story of DeShaun Watson, the quarterback from Clemson, because it’s near and dear to my heart. Way back when Warrick Dunn was a running back for the Buccaneers, one of my favorite stories was his charity called Home for the Holidays. And it originated because his mother, a single mom working a second job to make ends meet, was killed. [She was] a police officer [working] off duty as a security guard. So he created this program for single moms, [who were] disadvantaged, but they had to work hard to get into the program and earn a home, fully furnished, through Habitat

for Humanity. And I was there as they awarded these families their very first homes, and DeShaun Watson’s mom Diane was one of those women who knew about the program, and did all of the community service time and did all the paper work and she qualified. Dunn presented DeShaun and his family a home. DeShaun talked about the foundation, that that home gave him hope and allowed him to become what he became. DeShaun does the same thing now. He volunteers for Habitat for Humanity. He is the face of it, and when he gets his NFL career going he wants to be part of it as well. To me that’s the ultimate story of these players, the platform they are given and what they are capable of doing.

HEY NFL, JUST A FEW THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

Want to call out our fans, NFL? Fine, but hear us out first.

THE SPORTS PROFESSOR

GLEN MACNOW @RealGlenMacnow

Welcome to Philadelphia, NFL royalty. Please enjoy our beautiful city, its wonderful restaurants and vibrant nightlife. You’d probably love to sprint up the Art Museum steps and leap like Rocky, but our mayor shut all that down during your visit. Sorry about that. We expect you’ve heard horror stories about our fan base. If you work for ESPN, you’ll keep spouting those campfire tales on air. How we booed Santa and hurled snowballs at Donovan McNabb. Or something like that. We get it. We’re the evil bogeymen of sports. A slovenly, unwashed horde of Visigoths. A green-faced mob, chasing you down with a meat cleaver in one hand and a cheesesteak in the other — screaming “E-A-G-L-E-S” in your ear. Trust me, we know every twisted horror story, from the time we cheered an unconscious Michael Irvin to that mysterious Turkish prison hidden under Veterans Stadium. Some of those tales are actually half true. Others have been exaggerated to sound like the Rape of Nanking.

CHARLES MOSTOLLER

Many of our fans chafe at being stereotyped — the snowballs at Santa episode occurred 49 years ago, for Pete’s sake. Others have come to welcome your abhorrence. Me? I still try to explain. You see, no town challenges our reputation for surliness; yet none supports its home teams more, losing season after losing season. No city derides its own players so mercilessly; yet none hosts as magnificent a championship parade. Among our four teams, we get one of those every 25 years or so. The Eagles have played in just two of the first 51 Super Bowls (lost them both), and haven’t won an NFL championship since 1960. Anyone who actually remembers Chuck Bednarik sitting on Jim Taylor to clinch the 17-13 title win over Green Bay is now eligible for Social Security. And yet, the Eagles have sold out every game for the past 22 years, with a season-ticket renewal rate of 99.7 percent. Television ratings for our team are at the top of the league. Walk around town and you’ll see people wearing so much Eagles garb that you could go green-blind. By week’s end you won’t be able to get our banjo-plucked fight song out of your head. You’ll notice something else as you get around. Our city is packed

with former Eagles who stayed here after their careers ended. They’re engaged in business, media, community. Those players we booed also felt our adoring embrace and decided Philadelphia is a terrific place for work and family. Ask Ron Jaworski, who got heckled more than his share as QB, and now serves as the unofficial football mayor of these parts. Or former coach Dick Vermeil, who wisely realizes, “They booed because they care so darned much.” Hey, we’re not looking to make you love us. You want to be intimidated, go right ahead. Go hide in your world-class hotel and listen to Michael Wilbon gurgle nonsense on TV. That’s OK, it just means more space on the Franklin Parkway for us to enjoy the festivities. But if you do peek your head out, you’ll learn that the fan base Bill Parcells once called “a banana republic” is actually the most loyal, fervent, emotional and knowledgeable collection of people propping up any NFL franchise. You’ll see a bond between team and fan that is much like that of a long-married couple, who may see each other’s faults but could never live without the other partner. Treat us nice, we might even teach you the fight song.

20 NFL DRAFT PREVIEW

NFL mock draft | by Luke Miller No. 1

No. 4

Browns Myles Garrett, DE

Jaguars Leonard Fournette, RB

The Browns have needs across the board, and should be carefully considering quarterbacks after passing on Carson Wentz a year ago. However, Garrett remains the clearest pick in the draft. He had 32.5 sacks in three years of college and absolutely destroyed the combine.

While the Jaguars offense regressed as a whole in 2016, the rushing attack suffered the worst of it. You could improve that by adding a 240-pound wrecking ball who runs a 4.5 40-yard and regularly flattens defenders.

No. 2

49ers Malik Hooker, S From the clearest pick to the one with perhaps the most in play. The 49ers could take a quarterback, help their defense on the line or in the secondary, or look to trade down. We say they’ll roll with Hooker, an elite ball hawk capable of stepping into the Earl Thomas role.

No. 5

No. 3

Chargers Marshon Lattimore, CB Are the Bears committed enough to Mike Glennon to ignore having their pick of quarterbacks still on the board? We’ll see. Lattimore has separated himself as the best corner in a loaded draft class.

No. 7

Chargers Jamal Adams, S The Chargers and Gus Bradley would love to see Hooker here, again as the prototypical safety for that Seahawks defense. But Adams is the higher rated safety by many, and would provide a level of play missing since Eric Weddle left town. No. 8

No. 10

Bills DeShaun Watson, QB

Cardinals Mike Williams, WR

Buffalo is not the most quarterback-needy team, but they’ve displayed a clear lack of faith that Tyrod Taylor is their guy, and Clemson’s national champion hero could learn a lot from Taylor upon entering the league.

Larry Fitzgerald isn’t getting any younger, and Michael Floyd’s departure didn’t help matters in Arizona either. Williams would instantly improve the future of the Cardinals’ oncethriving passing game.

No. 11

Titans Solomon Thomas, DE

Panthers Christian McCaffrey RB

Saints Jonathan Allen, DT

The Titans could opt to give Marcus Mariota a shiny new toy with O.J. Howard or Mike Williams here, or they could look to the defense and take Thomas, a tenacious defensive lineman.

McCaffrey doesn’t fit the style of football we’ve come to expect from Carolina: smash mouth. But he does fit exactly what they need: versatile weapons for Cam Newton.

The Saints need help in pass defense, even if Malcolm Butler is sent their way, and here the value is picking up a pass rusher, not grabbing a cornerback. He won the Bednarik in 2016.

No. 6

No. 9

Jets O.J. Howard, TE

Bengals Corey Davis, WR

Another team with need at quarterback and their pick of the players at the position. But we’re having the Jets make things infinitely better for whatever QB does take the reins in 2017 by adding Howard. They sure could use him: In 2016, Jets tight ends caught 18 passes.

This might be a bit of a surprise, and Cincinnati could definitely look defense here. But the offense last season felt the effects of losing Mohamed Sanu and Marvin Jones. Having A.J. Green and Tyler Eifert on the field should free Davis up nicely.

No. 13

No. 12

Browns Mitchell Trubisky, QB There are a lot of rumors mors the Browns will try to o trade back into the top op five and grab Trubisky ky in addition to Garrett, but here they get him withithout that being necessary. ssary. Can he finally buck the he curse of Cleveland QBs?

No. 14

Eagles Derek Barnett, DE The Eagles might be tempted by John Ross’ speed here, and could certainly use a corner. But Barnett, who broke Reggie White’s career sack record at Tennessee, would provide an immediate boost and long term security to the pass rush.

No. 18

Colts ReubenFoster,LB

Titans John Ross, WR

Foster has seen his stock slide after a series of issues surrounding his performance at the combine. He’s undersized, but plays with a ferocity the Colts defense badly needs. They might be eager to add a top-10 talent at linebacker here.

The Titans held out and still got their weapon for Mariota. Ross’ 4.22 40-yard-dash time might convince a lot of teams to take a look, and that speed would open up the Titans running game underneath like nothing else would, and improve its passing attack.

No. 16

No. 19

No. 21

No. 24

Lions Jarrad Davis, LB

Raiders Tre’Davius White, CB

Chiefs Marlon Humphrey, CB

Davis provides the Lions with an athletic tackler roaming the middle and a leader ready to quarterback the defense from a position where it is expected. An inconsistent Lions defense could use the help.

It’s about time for the run on cornerback talent to start, so the Raiders get their pick of the group. They’ll hope to shore up a secondary that will need to contend with some tough AFC West opponents.

The Chiefs are another potentially landing spot for a quarterback to groom behind Alex Smith, but they need a corner to play opposite Marcus Peters. Humphrey would make one of the best defenses in the league even better.

No. 22

No. 25

Ravens Haason Reddick, LB

Buccaneers Takkarist McKinley, DE

Dolphins Forrest Lamp, G

Texans Patrick Mahomes III, QB

The Ravens are another team likely to give Ross a long look, but their defense needs to get back to its standard, and Reddick’s stock has been steadily rising since the season ended.

Tampa Bay might be hoping to reunite Cook with Jameis Winston here, but McKinley makes a pretty solid consolation prize. Ten sacks as a senior and a 4.59 40 at the combine sound like the recipe for success.

The Dolphins benefited from Laremy Tunsil’s tumble last draft, now they’ll look to keep beefing up the protection around Ryan Tannehill with the safest offensive lineman in this draft.

Mahomes has spoken about how interested the Texans seem. There’s no arm with more potential for Bill O’Brien to start working with as the Texans try to move on from the Brock Osweiler era.

No. 17

Redskins Dalvin Cook, RB Convincing Kirk Cousins to stay in town might be a long shot at this point anyway, but Washington simply bled offensive weapons this offseason and the running game hasn’t been productive since Robert Griffin III’s rookie season. Cook would change that.

No. 26

Broncos Ryan Ramczyk, OT

Giants Cam Robinson, OT

Seahawks Garett Bolles, OT

Last season we saw the exact limitations of how far a defense can carry a team. Ramczyk lays a foundation for rebuilding the Denver offense and help them protect the quarterback, whomever it may wind up being.

With Brandon Marshall in the fold, the Giants can focus on keeping Eli Manning upright long enough for him to find Marshall and Odell Beckham Jr. deep. Their offensive line is a clear area of need heading into 2017.

The Seahawks could certainly look for a corner here; Kevin King fits what they look for nicely. But they’ve have success drafting corners in later rounds and the offensive line situation is getting desperate. Offense here is a good move.

No. 28

Cowboys Kevin King, CB They might be looking at Adoree’ Jackson as well, but the Cowboys need a corner to contribute immediately, and King’s 6-foot-3 height should come in handy against Alshon Jeffery, Terrelle Pryor and Brandon Marshall. No. 29

Packers T.J. Watt, LB This isn’t just a hometown pick. Watt fits exactly what the Packers are looking for across from Clay Matthews and wouldn’t have to transition his position. And if you don’t recognize the name, he’s related to Texans All-Pro J.J.

No. 30

Steelers Jabril Peppers, S This spot is another candidate for a quarterback project like Deshone Kizer, after Ben Roethlisberger spent the offseason weighing retirement. But Peppers can help Pittsburgh’s defense at linebacker and safety. They’re noted admirers. No. 31

Falcons Taco Charlton, DE Charlton falls right into the Falcons’ lap as a player who can upgrade their pass rush and one of the best available. Maybe it will help them stop Tom Brady this time. No. 32

Saints Adoree Jackson, CB Jackson helps the Saints pass defense and return game, and with Sean Payton there, don’t be surprised if he turns up on offense for a few plays. They are expected to really focus on defense when selecting players in this draft.

Eagles should be able to draft better in Pederson Year 2 Two former NFL coaches say the Eagles have a lot more useful information to make their draft picks based on in 2017. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

As there is every year in April, there are a bevy of unanswered questions and intriguing curiosities as the Eagles prepare for the 2017 NFL draft. But in stark contrast to last season, where the ascension of rookie head coach Doug Pederson to the helm of the Birds and a chaotic quarterback controver-

sy involving soon-to-be drafted Carson Wentz and highly paid veterans Sam Bradford and Chase Daniel, this season is different. The Eagles, for the most part, know what they are doing in terms of scheme and personnel. “When a head coach gets into his second year it’s a little bit like a player going from that rookie year to the sophomore year,” Former NFL head coach and current NFL Network analyst Steve Mariucci said. “It’s a world of difference. You’ve been through everything, you’ve been through camp, you’ve been through the ups and downs of the season, drafts and combines and free agency. You know

your team better than you did. ... Doug Pederson had to learn who his players were, and who he wants on his team. From that standpoint, it’s a huge plus going into Year 2. He will understand which direction they want to be in in terms of offense and defense, what kinds of players fit the scheme instead of inheriting a bunch of players to fit into a scheme. You can get players through the draft and free agency who fit.” Things will be different for Howie Roseman and his front office staff as well, as the decisionmakers will have a much better sense of what direction they need to go in for each position, whether it’s emphasizing ath-

leticism or size at a position or the fit of a college scheme. And as another former NFL head coach said, Brian Billick, the decision making will happen more quickly in the sometimes chaotic draft environment. “Everybody should be a little more on line,” the former Ravens skipper said. “Coaches and scouts alike, as to those

conversations, last year it was in theory, but this year, there is no ambiguity about it. You have lived it. The scouts can see it, if they didn’t before. They understand how you will use that corner or that tight end. It makes the conversations a lot more efficient. Everybody should be on the same page as to what it is they are

looking for.” The Eagles pick at No. 14 Thursday night and their needs are pretty apparent — weapons for Wentz and help in the secondary. But the specific fits could potentially be better this year than last, as the team knows what kinds of players they covet. Pederson Year 2 starts now.

NFL visitors guide: Philly With hundreds of thousands of NFL fans expected in Philadelphia for the draft, we have a few ideas for fans. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

Here’s our best recommendation on what to do while you’re in the city for fans of each NFL team: Miami Dolphins:

R2L Restaurant — It might not be as epic as a Miami sunset, but heading to the 37th floor of Two Liberty Place at dusk is a pretty cool way to start your night. New England Patriots:

Delilah’s — If we (ever) won the Super Bowl here in Philly we’d party all year long. Here’s a good

Cincinnati Bengals:

spot to keep your party going.

Race Street Cafe — We understand Cincy is known for having some of the best chili in the world. Well, here’s Philly’s No. 1 rated chili (by Zagat).

New York Jets:

Spread Bagelry — We aren’t going to try and beat you at your own (bagel) game, New York. Which is why we suggest our favorite Montrealstyle bagel spot instead.

Cleveland Browns:

Theatre of Living Arts — We may not have the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but the famous old-school concert venue on South Street knows how to rock.

Buffalo Bills:

Chickie’s and Pete’s — If you’re looking for wings and from the birthplace of wins, look no further that Philly’s favorite sports bar Chickie’s and Pete’s. Breaded, deep fried and with a kick, eat them with a bucket of crab fries.

Pittsburgh Steelers:

City Hall — We heard you love bridges in Pittsburgh? City Hall allows visitors to climb to the very top of the historic building to get a 360-degree look at the city — and at our bridges too.

Baltimore Ravens:

Adventure Aquarium — We have an aquarium too — well, Camden does — but a nice walk over the Ben Franklin Bridge to New Jersey is a perfect midday trek.

Indianapolis Colts:

The Palestra — We know how basketball crazy the

state of Indiana is, and no hoops fan’s trek to Philly would be complete without a visit to the historic Palestra on UPenn’s campus. Tennessee Titans:

Johnny Utah’s — The bar is a slice of the country music scene right here in Philly and a favorite for music fans as well as residents of the Northern Liberties neighborhood. Jacksonville Jaguars:

Johnny Utah’s — Allen Robinson is a proud Penn State alum and your best wide receiver. Head to a great NFL bar, and the best Penn State bar in Philly, located just next to Reading Terminal Market. Kansas City Chiefs:

The historic Eastern State Penitentiary is located just a few minutes’ walk from the

Philly. It’s been nicknamed “Arrowhead East” and is among the best dive bars in the city. Las Vegas Raiders:

Sugar House Casino — If you’re an Oakland Raiders fan, we feel ya. Maybe you need to gamble away your troubles. If you’re from Las Vegas

and amped to welcome your new NFL franchise, maybe you need to gamble to celebrate. Los Angeles Chargers:

Boathouse Row — We know you try and stay in shape, like all good Los Angelenos. One of the most beautiful jogs and sightlines in the city is to

Olde City — Hailing from our nation’s capital, a visit to Philly can’t be complete without a visit to Independence Hall, the

Wissahickon Park — OK so, we don’t have as many lakes as Minnesota but for a taste of the outdoors without really leaving the city, check out Wissahickon Park and its series of trails. Chicago Bears:

Pizza Brain — Order the “Buffy” here, the Philly take on a Buffalo chicken pizza. It’s different than Chicago deep-dish but you won’t be disappointed with a slice in this

Fishtown favorite. Green Bay Packers:

Meltkraft — We know you’re looking for cheese. If you don’t find the cheese curd food truck on the parkway your next best bet is Meltkraft in Center City. Atlanta Falcons:

Ms. Tootsies — We can do soul food too, and that’s why Falcons fans need to stuff their face with deliciousness from this South Street establishment to help get over the worst loss in Super Bowl history. New Orleans Saints:

South Street — It’s not quite Bourbon Street, but a festive weekend stroll down South Street in search of a watering hole is a Philadelphia rite of passage — one that’s repeated by college students ad nauseam.

Detroit Lions:

Simeone Museum — A match made in heaven for visitors from Detroit, the museum celebrates the “spirit of compassion” in car racing. Carolina Panthers:

Deke’s Bar-B-Que — A great barbecue spot can be found in the up-andcoming hip Manayunk (as Charlotte itself continues to explode with young people). Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

Philadelphia’s Seaport Patriots and Pirates — We see Tampa’s pirate obsession and offer our own, down by the Delaware River. Arizona Cardinals:

Mitchell And Ness — If you’re a Cardinals fan you’re probably a Suns fan. And if you’re a Suns

fan we have something in common — Charles Barkley. Grab a throwback Sir Charles jersey at one of Philly’s best niche apparel shops. San Francisco 49ers:

Skyless Games — Download and play a Skyless Game to support our Philly tech startups. Los Angeles Rams:

Mighty Mick’s — It’s the gym where Rocky worked out. This site combines two L.A. passions, movies and staying fit. Seattle Seahawks:

Reading Terminal Market — It’s a little different than Seattle’s Fish Market, but if you’re renting an AirBnB and need high-quality ingredients this is the place to shop. It’s also one home to Philly’s best lunch. We suggest Tommy DiNic’s roast pork sandwich.

26 NFL DRAFT PREVIEW

Eagles full 7-round mock draft We break down, predict and analyze what we expect for each of the Eagles’ eight draft picks this weekend. LUKE MILLER @LukeFM7

sports@metro.us

The Eagles have eight picks in the 2017 draft, with a second selection in the fourth round coming courtesy of the Browns as part of the Carson Wentz deal. Will they keep them all? Will they move up? Down? Here’s seven rounds of hypothesized Eagles draft picks. Day 1

Round 1 – Pick 14: John Ross, WR, Washington Cornerback is the Eagles greatest need and least addressed issue of the off-season. But it just doesn’t work out here.

VE LO

Marshon Lattimore will be gone. Sidney Jones tore his achilles. Gareon Conley is unlikely to be drafted two days removed from a rape accusation. The Eagles could aim for Marlon Humphrey from Alabama, but the value at corner comes later. They could take the best pass-rusher on their board, be it Derek Barnett, Takkarist McKinley, or Charles Harris. If they’re to look for an offensive weapon, Dalvin Cook is making a bit of a comeback to Eagles draft rumors, with his grandmother stating Duce Staley wants to draft him. But receiver is the more likely selection here, and if one of Corey Davis, Mike Williams, and Ross is available, the Birds may be unable to resist and grab Ross and his 4.22 speed to stretch defenses. Day 2

Round 2 – Pick 43: Alvin Kamara, RB, Tennessee

Round 3 – Pick 99: Teez Tabor, CB, Florida The last time the Eagles took a receiver in round one and a running back in round two (see: Jeremy Maclin and LeSean McCoy) it worked out pretty well. The main critique of Kamara is a lack of use in college, but that can be a positive too: less tread on the tires. Kamara combines speed and power in his runs and was used heavily (40 receptions in 2016) in the receiving game by Tennessee. The Eagles acquired their third-round pick from the Ravens, dropping back from 74th in the third round to 99th in exchange for Timmy Jernigan. If Tabor is around here he could be an absolute steal for the Eagles. He was a first-round prospect with top-five cornerback game tape who has seen his stock tumble after a pair of slow 40 times at the combine and his pro day.

John Ross is the kind of game-changing, down-the-ďŹ eld wide receiver the Eagles have missed for a while.

Day 3

Round 4 – Pick 113: Corn Elder, CB, Miami Round 4 – Pick 139: Eddie Vanderdoes, DT, UCLA Round 5 – Pick 155: James Conner, RB, Pittsburgh Round 6 – Pick 194: Ben Boulware, LB, Clemson Round 7 – Pick 230: Jojo Mathis, DE, Washington It might be getting greedy to want Elder still around here, but in a cornerback class this deep it is possible. It would certainly

be no surprise to see this be the point the Eagles double dip at the position. Elder’s a hard hitting corner that could step right into the nickel role for the Eagles and keep Malcolm Jenkins in the defensive backfield doing what he does best. Vanderdoes could play inside or outside on the line for the Eagles, but in a 4-3 probably finds a better home at tackle. Conner would supplement Kamara and

GETTY IMAGES

the backs already on the Eagles roster nicely. A great story who beat Hodgkin’s lymphoma, he would be the big back that might let the Eagles occasionally run the ball on either third and fourth and short. Mathis had to have foot surgery during the 2016 season, but before that he was off to a hot start. The Eagles could find less potential in the seventh round, and he’d address that “future-ofthe-pass-rush need.

Brad Pitt reunites with the Jolie-Pitt clan

ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES

Brad Pitt is mending his relationship with his two eldest sons, Maddox, 15, and Pax, 13. Ever since the Pitt’s alleged, maybe drunken altercation with Maddox, an incident that led to Angelina Jolie’s divorce filing, the actor’s relationship with his sons has basically been in shambles. But as an insider reveals to InTouch, the family has made a

breakthrough. In early April, the whole family had an overnight stay at Pitt’s Los Feliz home. All it took to bring the family back together was a lengthy child-services investigation, followed by some much-needed space during a custody battle and months of therapy. It’s a good thing that the 53-year-old is spend-

ing more time with his children. It was starting to seem like the loneliness was chewing away at his insides. He flirted with Sienna Miller. He maybe secretly dated Kate Hudson. He called up Jennifer Aniston a bunch of times. It’s a lot. But William Bradley, don’t you know? You can’t find happiness in hot ladies — you gotta find it within yourself. Good luck, my dude.

It seems like Caitlyn Jenner has been offering slightly insane soundbites forever. Or at least while promoting her memoir, “The Secrets of My Life.” But it’s literally only been a week since Jenner revealed that making sweet love to Kris Jenner was adequate. Now, the 67-year-old is talking politics. The long-time Republican sat down with the Daily Beast to talk about how despite

voting for Trump, that’s not necessarily where her loyalties now lie —

she’s more focused on the LGBTQ community. She also talked about wanting to explain her journey as a transgender woman to Mike Pence — a man who doesn’t believe in evolution, but does believe gayconversion therapy works; and running for office, saying “Can you see a Senator Jenner? Hmm!” Girl, bye. I refuse to acknowledge this ever again.

social media is when you press the wrong button.” The 35-year-old also talked to King about her plans for the future, which chiefly are to have the baby, and then make a major comeback. “That would be really fun.” Wow. I just realized that this woman is my role model.

Anna Faris stands by her man

Anna Faris has her man’s back. The actress took to Twitter to address some of the not-so-great feedback husband Chris Pratt has been facing lately. Apparently Pratt, 37, is very intensely feeling the sads because of the negative press. “Chris feels terrible about the thing he said,” she wrote. “I can attest to this. He is up at night.” She continued, “Truthfully, and I want

to be frank, Chris is truly the best person I know.” Thing is, Faris, 40, never really specifies “the thing he said.” She could be talking about his recent comments about refusing to take pictures with fans.

Or! “The thing he said” could refer to his comments about feeling like his people are being underrepresented in Hollywood. Anyway, we should all stop entertaining the idea of ganging up on him, because he very nearly owned up to his privilege, and also? He feels bad about it. His wife says so! Let’s just fondly remember that he is indeed very charming and that he’s only trying to promote the seemingly lackluster “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”

In late August of 2013, a little movie came out of nowhere and made a lot of money. It was “Instructions Not Included, a comedy from Mexico starring Eugenio Derbez — a big star in his native country yet largely unknown in the States. And yet it went on to gross $44 million (and $66 million more abroad), making it the highest grossing Spanish-language film of all time in the U.S. market. “It opened a lot of doors for me, Derbez tells us. Not long after, he decided to take a leap of faith: He closed down his production offices in Mexico and relocated to Los Angeles. “I started everything from zero: a new company, a new home, everything. It’s paid off. Derbez scored a five-picture deal with Lionsgate. First out of the gate: “How to Be a Latin Lover, his first starring role in an English-language film. He plays Maximo, a gold digger whose rich, 80-something wife of 25 years abruptly trades him for a younger model (in the form of Michael Cera). For one thing, comedy doesn’t always translate across national borders. “Drama is universal; we all cry for the same reasons. But comedy is very particular. It depends on each country, each culture, Derbez explains. “It was hard to make a script that would appeal to the U.S. and also to my audience. Because I didn’t want to forget my audience. While “Instructions Not Included was a Woody Allen-style auteur project — written, directed and starring the same GETTY

The supporting cast is stocked with American comedy names like Rob Corddry, Rob Riggle, Rob Lowe, plus Raquel Welch, as the wealthy lady he most wants to seduce. “At first I wanted to direct it, but then I decided it was too risky. It’s a new market. It’s not in my first language, Derbez recalls. Though he says he’ll direct again in the future, he thinks this was the right decision: Once he got on set, he realized he didn’t always understand why the American jokes were funny. Hispanic humor generally tends to be very different. “We’re probably more broad, Derbez explains. “If you watch any Hispanic channels, we’re really big. The jokes are big, the

laughs are big. In the U.S., everything’s very grounded, very cool. You don’t want the U.S. market to think, ‘This is too broad, too slapstick.’ So everyone worked at finding a balance between the two cultures. Derbez himself had to change his comedy style a touch. “Usually, I play a lot with words — making jokes playing with the Spanish language, he says. But he can’t do that with English yet. “I’m still learning. I’m not confident enough to play with words in English. But I’m getting there. Derbez also found himself playing someone who’s not like him at all. “In real life, I’m very, very shy, Derbez admits. Gaining weight helped. He put on 20 pounds, so that Maximo’s gut protrudes out of his fancy duds. “He’s not aware that he’s already old. He feels he’s still hot and sexy. But he’s not anymore.

Move over, Alec Baldwin Many Americans would sleep a lot easier if Donald Trump were host of a late night show instead of leader of the free world. The former reality star could do considerably less damage if he had stuck to entertainment and stayed out of politics. But what if Trump the president had his own late night show? That’s the premise of “The President Show,a new weekly late night show on Comedy Central that puts our commander-in-chief — as played by Trump impersonator Anthony Atamanuik — behind the desk. My show is not going to get him impeached — that’s a left fantasy anyway, because the process would take so long, he explained. “I think we can contribute to re-examining his identity and forcing cable news media to stop doing this pretend game where just because

His response to claims that he’s normalizing Trump “If anything, I’ve tried to show how abnormal he is, Atamanuik says. Was Charlie Chaplin normalizing Adolf Hitler when he played him in ‘The Great Dictator’? Comedy and satire are the lifeblood of the most tragic periods in human history. I have survivors in my family, and they laughed their way through the camps because that’s how you survive. “Trump on his dream guests “All the stars of ‘Bring It On.’ All the girls, so wonderful. I’d wander into the dressing room before the show, like I used to with so many pageants with underage teenagers. Did you know I really did that? Isn’t that wonderful?

34 TRAVEL These local gems have managed to stay off the tourist circuit. While the secret is out about popular islands like Bali and Santorini, these islands are still under-theradar—but not for long.

Yaeyama Islands When thinking about Japan, subtropical jungle, mangrove swamps and white beaches that rival the Caribbean probably don’t come to mind. But the Yaeyama Islands in Okinawa Prefecture are a beachy paradise where pineapples and sugarcane grow. Known as one of Japan’s best diving spots, the underwater world includes coral reefs, dolphins, sea turtles and manta rays.

Providencia Although it’s part of Colombia, Providencia feels like a laid-back Caribbean island. English, Spanish, and English Creole is spoken by the locals who are still living by their own

traditions and customs, far away from Colombia’s capital Bogota. The ocean surrounding the island has the world’s thirdlargest barrier reef filled with coral reefs, sponges, and countless exotic fish. There’s no mobile reception, but you’re trying to get away from it all, right?

The Isles of Scilly What might be Britain’s best-kept secret, the Isles of Scilly are a subtropical (yes, you read that right) paradise with 35 white sand beaches, exotic plants, and azure blue waters — and only a 15-minute flight from the mainland. There is an abundance of bird life and snorkeling safaris to encounter sharks, seals and dolphins. Getting to the islands and staying there can be rather expensive, but it’s worth it to experience a way of life that’s hardly changed over the last few decades.

Sylt Escape to the French seaside without the crush of the Riviera on Ile de Re.

Called the “Côte d’Azur of Germany” and quite simi-

lar to the Hamptons, this is where the country’s rich and famous mingle. The island has a warm microclimate thanks to the gulf stream, white, windswept beaches and mud flats from the surrounding Wadden Sea. If you have the money, you’ll be spoilt for choice between spa and wellness facilities, golf clubs and Michelin-starred restaurants. The special climate and salty, iodine-rich air are supposed to be very beneficial and locals have been flocking to Sylt since the 19th century.

why Ile de Ré is a preferred hideaway for stressed-out Parisians. Towns like popular Saint-Martin-deRé have whitewashed houses with blue and green shutters (the only colors allowed) and distinct terracotta clay roofs. The countryside, best explored by bike (60 miles of lanes) or on horseback, is marked by salt marshes, wildflowers and vineyards.

Pantelleria Ile de Re Picturesque harbor villages, fresh seafood from the market and golden beaches — it’s easy to see

Closer to Africa than Europe, Pantelleria is one of Italy’s least known islands. Located between Sicily and Tunisia, the

“black pearl of the Mediterranean” features no real beaches, but a fascinating black, volcanic landscape instead. Swimming, diving, and snorkeling are mostly off rocks and in secluded coves. Pantelleria features unique, traditional houses called dammusi that are built with lava rocks and have cisterns to collect rainwater. Major sights include a nature reserve and a volcanic lake Specchio di Venere (Venus’ Looking Glass) which is fed by thermal springs. Maybe due to the lack of beaches, Pantelleria has never attracted mass tourism, however a number of shy, local celebrities like Giorgio Armani own property Sylt on the island.

Vis Croatia has 1,246 islands (counting every rock and islet) out of which 50 or so are inhabited and only 15 have more than 1,000 people living on them. Romantic Vis with its sheltered, emerald green coves is a local secret with Croatian food lovers thanks to its traditional cuisine. There are plenty of vineyards, olive groves, orchards and more than 300 species of herbs and pine, palm, fig and mulberry trees, all used in the island’s simple but

Where to eat in London right now The heart of the British capital is undergoing a culinary renaissance.

Central London is experiencing a gastronomical boom, with hip new restaurants popping up constantly. We’ve narrowed down a list of our absolute favorite newcomers.

Les 110 De Taillevent Dazzling dishes, such as silky lobster knuckle ravioli in a fragrant consomme – mark out Les 110 de Taillevent as the capital’s ne plus ultra French brasserie de luxe.

At this import from Paris and chicly housed in a former Coutts Bank on Cavendish Square, enjoy the exquisite cuisine and list of 110 rare and famed wines by the glass.

Jamavar There’s no finer fish dish in town right now than up-market Indian newcomer Jamavar’s stone bass tikka. Tandoorblasted and marinated in mace and cardamom, this stone bass is accompanied by a chili-spiked avocado chutney. So authentic is the food and spicing here that the restaurant buzzes with Bollywood stars, wealthy Mayfair moguls and the entire well-coiffured high caste Indian diaspora. Inspired by the Viceroy’s House in New

Delhi, luxuriate in a procession of mini dhosas, black dhal and palak, and enjoy other top mains like pearly onion and coconut milk-spiced lobster nerulli, or char-grilled Old Delhi butter chicken.

Kricket Downsized dishes of vibrant Indian street food emerge from the open kitchen at this lively Soho newcomer. Sit at

the L-shaped lava-topped counter and watch chefs haul out bone marrowsmeared kulcha breads from a blazing clay tandoor. Sip rum-laced milky masala chai tea and dip away at cauliflower and yolk-topped kedgeree, perky bowls of garlic butter crab, or puffed rice bhel puri starters, pepped up with raw mango, Greek yogurt and a tangy tamarind sauce.

Padella Perch at the galley kitchen counter at London’s top pasta bar at Borough Market, and watch transfixed as chefs toss hot pans of handmade Italian pasta. Epic and amazingly cheap dishes include egg-free Parmesanand-black pepper rich pici cacao e pepe (pronounced pea-chy) from Tuscany, or devilishly addictive ricotta ravioli with a slick of sage butter. With pasta mains ranging from 5 to 12 pounds, dessert at 4 pounds, and Italian wine by the tap starting at 3.50 pounds, it’s little wonder expectant lines form here daily from noon.

Kiln Earthy northern Thai food shines at this evocative clay pot, iron wok, barbecue and wood-burning kiln-focused Soho spot. Sizzling hogget skewers and slow-grilled soy chicken thigh bites pack a huge side-of-theroad punch, while a raft of other rural village-style dishes showcase influences from Myanmar, Laos and Yunnan province. Pick up pungent

hints of betel and kaffir lime leaves, galangal, sweet mint, Thai parsley, Szechuan pepper and rare Burmese wild ginger in the cheap and authentic dishes.

Temper Low-and-slow smokehouse meat maven Neil Rankin smashes the livefire rare breed meat scene at this speakeasy-like basement playpen. Sit at the central open kitchen counter and feel the heat from a Heath Robinsonesque complex of whitehot charcoal smoke pits, seething clay ovens and

medieval-looking roasting spits. On-site butchered and tempered nose to tail goodies include the ninehour smoked Cabrito kid goat tacos with chipotle and sour cream, Welsh Black Tyn-Y-Caeau burnt beef fat, and charred Daphne Tilley lamb on baked flat breads.

Ormer Mayfair Hidden way in the depths of Flemings Mayfair hotel is Shaun Rankin’s Michelin-starred ode to all things Jersey (in the Channel Islands). A melange of Rankin fans, hotel guests and Mayfair dining scene

divas luck out in this art deco-inspired haven featuring Jersey-reared, caught and foraged dishes. From sweet lobster ravioli with crab bisque to crab with mango, there’s nothing here that fails to delight. Choose from a list of mostly English fizz and wines, then end on Rankin’s famous treacle tart with raspberry coulis and — you guessed it — Jersey clotted cream.

45 Jermyn St. An older crowd enjoys the clublike vibe at this instant classic all-day brasserie in the back of Fortnum & Mason in Piccadilly. Exchange a few words with the flatcapped doorman before settling into a burnt orange leather booth and dusting down a dark rum and Darjeeling Char Lady cocktail or Noilly Prat soda aperitif. An old school trolley trundles up table side to serve Siberian sturgeon caviar with copious scrambled eggs, blinis and baked new potatoes, while creamy beef stroganoff and whole duck with elderberry sauce gets the full table side flambe treatment.

Anglo Modern British bistronomy takes a giant leap forward with chef/patron Mark Jarvis’ foodie shrine and tasting menu mecca at Hatton Garden jewelry quarter in Farringdon. Offering only top value 45 pound seven-course tasting menus for dinner, bliss out on gorgeously plated dishes like Cornish plaice with carrot and sea beet or art-on-a-plate skate with salsify, sea beet and lemon verbena.

A taste of India Work your itinerary around these three essential experiences.

India is one of the world’s most interesting destinations for every kind of traveler, from intrepid trekkers who want to hike the Himalayas, to foodies who want to discover the perfect curry. And unless you have a few months or years or lifetimes to discover India, one of the best ways to make sure you get the most out of your trip is on a tour. To guide your exploration, we found three magical experiences to have in India.

Mumbai A tour through Mumbai is the perfect introduction to India. Like India, the city is both urban and

rural, modern and ancient, rich and poor, and a melting pot of people from India’s 29 states all came to this city to try and strike it rich. Although Mumbai doesn’t have the heavy-hitting tourist attractions that other Asian cities have,

city’s wealthy neighborhoods, tour the Gandhi Museum and visit a Dhobi Ghat, the outdoor public laundry facilities in the slums, while driving to landmarks like Victoria Terminus and the India Gate.

Udaipur

the vibrancy, energy, local life and waterfront setting make this a city that shouldn’t be missed. On a whirlwind halfday tour, you can see Art Deco buildings in the

Situated on mirrorlike Lake Pichola, Udaipur is one of India’s most picturesque cities. The enormous City Palace is the main draw here, as the former and current residence of the ruling Maharana. While the estate is huge, only a small fraction of the palace is open to the public, which creates some crowded congestion around the entrance. At first, the thronging crowds seemed like too steep a price to pay for a visit to the city palace, but after a few minutes, our guide had maneu-

vered us through secret passageways and hidden hallways barely wide enough for an average American. Through a hidden tunnel from the main entrance, we arrived in a quiet second-story courtyard decorated with mirrored peacock mosaics and windows into the Maharana’s harem.

Taj Mahal This is one of the Seven Wonders of the World,

and that moniker has earned this monument to love nearly 4 million visitors every year. To get the full experience, our guide arranged two sets of tickets so that we could visit twice in one day. Our first visit at sunrise felt a bit harried as we were crushed in with a huge line of eager visitors. We learned the history of the famous monument and took our time finding the perfect angle for photos. We ven-

tured inside, marveling at the precious stone inlay throughout the building and the intricately carved stonework around the tombs. On our second visit, our guide took us off the path on a walk through a jasmine orchard, where we could only hear birds and monkeys and didn’t see anybody else. For the first time all day, it felt like we could actually connect with the Taj Mahal and be present.

NFL experts say Eagles should take an offensive player in first round Across the board, NFL experts are urging the Eagles to draft an offensive playmaker to help Carson Wentz. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

Sitting at No. 14 in Thursday’s first round, the Eagles have a ton of variables to consider. But according to NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock, unless a top defender surprisingly falls in their lap, Philly should add a player on offense. “I’ve been saying all along that I think the Eagles ought to be looking real hard at the offensive side because they drafted Carson Wentz and you have to support him,” Mayock said prior to the Phillyhosted draft’s kickoff Wednesday. “If you look their roster, the two free agent wideouts [Torrey Smith, Alshon Jeffery] are both effectively on one year deals, Darren Sproles probably retires next year, and their slot receiver [Jordan Mat-

thews] is on his contract year. All of their skill guys are effectively on one-year deals. I look at the Eagles as if it’s the best defensive player on the board, like Reuben Foster, versus who is the best playmaker, is it a running back is it a wide receiver is it a tight

end? I want an offensive playermaer because last year I went from 13 to 8 to 2 and you have to support him.” Among the players expected to fall in the Eagles window are Corey Davis, Christian McCaffrey, Dalvin Cook, John Ross and Mike

Williams. Any of those names called at the Art Museum on Thursday night would satisfy their mission to give Wentz a plethora of weapons — and would give him one to work with with a long-term view in mind. “You look at the best

player available on the board at the time,” former NFL head coach Steve Mariucci urged. “If it happens to be a playmaker on offense that would help surround Carson Wentz with weapons. If it’s a good defensive player on the board, that fits a need as well. You get those kinds of choices when you pick in the middle of the draft.” “I think they are in a good position to take the best player available,” he continued. “You might be able to get a corner in the second round. There are a lot of good corners in the draft. There will be some good receivers and running backs when they pick that will be tempting.” Should the Eagles give into temptation? Brian Billick, another former NFL head coach, says they should if the answer to the following question is yes. “Are we doing everything we can to optimize the future of Carson Wentz?” Will the Eagles ask the same questions Thursday? Tune in to find out.

Jones-Drew says Mixon is ‘by far’ best RB in NFL draft Maurice Jones-Drew knows a thing or two about what an NFL running back looks like. He spent nine years in the league — eight with Jacksonville — tormenting defenses with three 1,000-yard seasons and 79 total touchdowns before retiring at age 29 and becoming an analyst for the NFL Network. At a media function held at the Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown Hotel on Wednesday, Jones-Drew told Metro Philly that there’s no running back that comes close to Mixon on a sheer talent equation. “It’s not close,” JonesDrew said. “By far [he’s the best]; not even close.” Jones-Drew wasn’t knocking any of the three likely first-round tailbacks

in Leonard Fournette, Christian McCaffrey and Dalvin Cook, either. He believes that Mixon is just that good of a player. “His abilities speak for themselves,” Jones-Drew said. “If he was clean, he would be a top 2-3 pick who can do everything.” He’s also quite familiar with Mixon with both players’ hometown being within an hour of one another’s in California. Jones-Drew has had conversations with Mixon since that damning video surfaced. A video that may very well drop him out of the first round altogether. “He made a mistake at 18, and it’s a big mistake, it’s something you don’t want to see a pattern,” Jones-Drew said. “He understands he has to be

clean for the rest of his life. For him it’s more he has to come out and play football really well. Teams are going to look to that and hold him to that and say, ‘Look, you can’t mess up because if you mess up it’s over’.” Mixon ran for 1,274 yards and 10 touchdowns this past season. He also averaged an impressive 6.8 yards per carry over his two seasons. Yet, it’s the video of him striking and knocking out a woman that has left a dark cloud latched onto him throughout this process. Jones-Drew, in his conversations with the 20-year-old, feels his apologies have been genuine, and that he knows what’s at stake. For former NFL head coach and current NFL

OK, so Joe Mixon is good. But is he worth the risk?

Network analyst Steve Mariucci, the abundance of red flags on many of the prospects are cause for concern, especially in Mixon’s case where there’s video evidence. “It makes public opinion really different,

more serious and louder,” Mariucci said. What team will take on the PR headache that’ll arise when selecting Mixon? The Eagles have been linked to Mixon, along with teams like Denver.

Reports suggest that Mixon will be in play if he’s on the board when the Eagles walk to the podium at pick No. 43. This isn’t the first time someone has come out and called Mixon the best talent at his position. An unnamed NFL executive also said Mixon is the top overall player in this year’s crop. “Whichever team does take him, they’re going to get a tremendous player,” Jones-Drew surmised. “I’ve sat down and talked to numerous scouts, coaches, offensive coordinators and they don’t deny the talent … his ability and what he was able to do at Oklahoma, shows that he’s capable of coming into the league right away and being a starter.” KYLE PHILLIPPI
