HEALTH CARE REFORM VOTE MAY BE NEAR

1

In a possible breakthrough for U.S. Republicans’ effort to roll back Obamacare, key moderate lawmakers met with President Donald Trump on Wednesday and said a revised bill might win approval and conservatives voiced no objections. Keen to score his first major legislative win since taking office in January, Trump has been personally engaged in building support among fellow Republicans in the

House of Representatives for an effort that has already twice collapsed. It was still unclear if support was adequate to win passage, but the House was moving toward a possible vote on Thursday on the bill. “Big, significant progress” on it has been made, said House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy on the House floor. MACRON, LE PEN CLASH IN PUERTO RICO FILES PRE-ELECTION SHOWDOWN FOR BANKRUPTCY

2

Far-right candidate Marine Le Pen and centrist Emmanuel Macron clashed over their vision of France’s future and ways of handling terrorism in an ill-tempered televised debate ahead of Sunday’s run-off vote for the presidency. The two went into the debate with opinion polls showing Macron, 39, maintaining a strong lead of 20 percentage points over the National Front’s Le Pen, 48, in what is widely seen

as France’s most important election in decades. For Le Pen, the debate, watched by millions, was a last major chance to persuade voters of the merits of her program which includes cracking down on illegal immigration and ditching the euro currency. the sharpest exchange was over national security, a sensitive issue in a country where more than 230 people have been killed by Islamist militants since 2015. Facebook will hire 3,000 more people over the next year to speed up the removal of videos showing murder, suicide and other violent acts, in its most dramatic move yet to combat the threat to its valuable public image. The hiring spree, announced by Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg is an acknowledgement by Facebook that it needs more than automated software to identify and remove offensive

posts that have exploded online and made headlines in the traditional news media. The problem has become more pressing since the introduction last year of Facebook Live, a service that allows any of Facebook’s 1.9 billion monthly users to broadcast video, which has been marred by some violent scenes. Some violence on Facebook is inevitable, but the company has been attacked for its slow response. REUTERS

EDGE OF EXTINCTION

Northern white rhinoceroses are seen at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a 90,000-acre not-for-profit wildlife conservancy, in Central Kenya’s Laikipia County on Wednesday. At the edge of extinction, three northern white rhinoceros, or square-lipped rhinoceros, are the last ones of their species in the world. The three, named Sudan, the male; and the two females, Najin and Fatu, are being guarded and observed 24 hours to keep away poachers.

Puerto Rico announced a historic restructuring of its public debt on Wednesday, touching off what may be the biggest bankruptcy ever in the $3.8 trillion U.S. municipal bond market. While it was not immediately clear just how much of Puerto Rico’s $70 billion of debt would be included in the bankruptcy filing, the case is sure to dwarf Detroit’s insolvency in 2013. Three dead, more than a dozen injured after Jeep crashes through auto auction in Billerica Police do not suspect that the crash was an act of terror. ERIN TIERNAN

Three people were killed and more than a dozen were injured when an out-of-control Jeep crashed through a crowd of people at an auto action in Billerica on Wednesday. Emergency responders were called to the Lynnway Auto Auction on Charter Way at 10:15 a.m. after a Jeep SUV crashed through the crowd, Billerica police confirmed via Twitter. Multiple reporters were reporting from the chaotic scene as details unfolded Wednesday morning. State police said an investigation is ongoing, but they do not suspect the crash was a terrorist act. “At this point, there is no evidence or information to suggest the incident was caused by

the scene. They also asked media helicopters in the area to back off around 11 a.m. so that a medical helicopter could land and evacuate a patient. At least six victims were transported to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, The Boston Globe reported. The building has been evacuated. Burlington Fire Chief Thomas Conway told the Globe he was concerned about the building’s stability following the crash. “This is a horrible accident,’’ he said. The Lynnway Auto Auction is a dealer consignment auction and has been in business since 1997. It moved to its current address in Billerica in 2011, according to the company’s website.

New urban developments have ushered in gentrification throughout Boston, but one neighborhood, Chinatown, has been hit especially hard. But the Pao Arts Center is a project that, though new, wants to reclaim the neighborhood and allow Chinatown to offer the culture, support and community resources Asian-Americans have relied on for decades. The center, spearheaded by the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, opens this Saturday at 99 Albany St. — land that was once taken by the city of Boston through eminent domain in the 1960s. Hundreds of Chinatown homes were destroyed, and residents were displaced so the city could construct a highway ramp. The land became available again after the Big Dig and recently became One Greenway, a housing complex with retail space available to organizations that will benefit the community, like the Pao Arts Center. Giles Li, executive director of BCNC, said the changes in the ’60s were a difficult time for the community. He is hopeful that the center will offer a way back into Chinatown for those who were forced out. “Here’s something welcoming them back with open arms,â€? he said. “Arts is the best way to heal from a wound like that.â€? The center, in partnership with Bunker Hill Community College, will offer arts education programs and classes, host visiting artists, feature a residency program and serve as a space to exhib-

it work from community artists. “It gives artists an opportunity to engage with the residents of the Chinatown neighborhood,â€? Li said. The art classes and events then, in turn, allow those who live there to “engage with Chinatown not just as residents, but as creators of art.â€? Even though the center is focused on arts and culture, Li said that it will fill other needs as well, as a true community space, like connecting residents to social services and to each other — whether or not they currently live in Chinatown. “Chinatown has meant a lot to a lot of people,â€? Li said, “not only residents, but members of Chinese immigrant families who live in other parts of the city or even outside the city.â€? “For me, I think Chinatown has played a really important part in my own family’s wellbeing in this country — my grandparents and my mom sought services here, found friends in social circles here,â€? he said. “As Chinatown becomes, essentially, less Chinese, less immigrant, less working class, we still want to hold on to what made Chinatown so important and make sure that doesn’t disappear.â€? The center has been more than two years in the making. On Saturday, all that work will culminate in a grand opening that kicks off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon. Classic and contemporary Chinese art performances will follow, from opera to beatboxing to a concert by Boston-born singer-songwriter Kevin So.

Day after racist taunts, Adam Jones gets cheers at Fenway The Orioles center fielder got a standing ovation from Boston fans Tuesday. SAM NEWHOUSE

Racial insults hurled by a couple of Red Sox fans at a black player from an opposing team on Monday resurrected questions about racism in the city. But almost every fan in the bleachers at Fenway Park Tuesday night — and plenty of the Red Sox players — tried to make it up to Oriole Adam Jones with a standing ovation as he went to his first at-bat in the first inning. Jones said someone in the stands threw a bag of peanuts at him Monday night and yelled racial slurs at him from the bleachers near center field. A fan was ejected from the game for throwing the peanuts. But it remains unknown if just one or multiple fans had yelled racial slurs, sparking concerns over Boston’s reputation as “the most racist city

in America,” as comedian Michael Che put it. Team owner John Henry and team president Sam Kennedy met with Jones to apologize for the incident and promised to beef up security in the bleachers. Jones told The New York Times the ovation was “much appreciated,” but added, “I don’t want no love and support. I don’t need all that stuff. Just be normal.”

FBI’s Comey defends Clinton email decision, but feels ‘nauseous’ Comey said he felt he had to speak out at that time because he had repeatedly told lawmakers the Clinton email probe was over. REUTERS

FBI Director James Comey said on Wednesday it made him “mildly nauseous” to think reopening an investigation of Hillary Clinton’s emails affected the 2016 presidential election, but he had no regrets and would make the same decision again. In four hours of testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Comey delivered his most impassioned defense yet of a decision that many Democrats believe cost them the White House: telling Congress 11 days before the Nov. 8 election that the FBI had uncovered a new trove of Clinton-

related emails. “To not speak about it would require an act of concealment, in my view,” Comey said. “Concealing, in my view, would be catastrophic.” He told the panel one reason for the FBI’s renewed interest in Clinton’s case was that investigators had found emails, some of them classified, forwarded by Clinton’s assistant

Huma Abedin to her husband, who was not authorized to see such information. “It makes me mildly nauseous to think that we might have had some impact on the election, but honestly, it wouldn’t change the decision,” Comey said. The FBI, which is supposed to remain politically neutral, said a few days later that the new emails did not change its decision not to recommend criminal charges against Clinton, but many Democrats believe the political damage was done. Clinton said on Tuesday her election bid

was derailed in part by Comey’s announcement about the renewed probe of her use of a private email server while she was secretary of state. She said her effort also was damaged by the WikiLeaks release of her campaign chairman John Podesta’s emails, allegedly stolen by Russian hackers. Senator Dianne Feinstein, ranking member on the committee, led the Democrats in hammering Comey with questions about why he went public with the Clinton probe but kept silent on an investigation related to the Republican candidate,

Donald Trump. “It’s still very unclear — and I hope, director, that you will clear this up — why the FBI’s treatment of these two investigations was so dramatically different,” she asked. U.S. intelligence agencies in December accused Russia of hacking of Democratic emails in an effort to tilt the election to Trump. Comey confirmed in March the FBI was investigating possible collusion between Trump surrogates and Russia. Comey said on Wednesday the probe into whether Russian hacking activities and

American citizens was a classified investigation in its early stages – far different from the almost completed email probe. Comey declined to comment on whether Trump, or anyone else, had been ruled out as a possible subject. Moscow has denied the hacking allegations. The FBI director acknowledged recent months have been difficult. “But I think I’ve done the right thing at each turn. I’m not on anybody’s side. It’s so hard for people to see that,” Comey said, adding later, “I don’t have any regrets.”

While Cinco de Mayo is a real, albeit mostly insignificant, celebration in Mexico, it’s taken on a life of its own in America. But instead of using the day as an excuse to dump tequila over your head and scream the lyrics to “La Bamba” — hey, we’ve all been there — why not use the day to ditch the burritos for a more authentic bite? The warping of Mexican fare has reached an epidemic level, but if you know where to look in Boston, get ready to be transported.

Going ‘Big’ with Jay Oakerson The Philly comic and podcaster ships up to Boston this weekend.

If you go: May 4-6, Laugh Boston, 425 Summer St., $25 laughboston.com.

MATT JUUL

It’s a pretty good time to be Big Jay Oakerson these days. The Philadelphia native is packing in comedy clubs across the country thanks to his packed schedule of touring, radio shows and other projects. In addition to hosting the insanely popular Legion of Skanks podcast, Oakerson co-hosts the SiriusXM talk radio show “The Bonfire” for Comedy Central with New England native Dan Soder. He also recently returned to NBC’s Seeso streaming service with a huge list of guest stars for Season 2 of his crowd work series “What’s Your F@%king Deal?!” “I’m trying to keep as many irons in the fire as possible, until people get sick of me,” jokes the 39-year-old comic. We caught up with Oakerson ahead of his three-night stint at Laugh Boston this weekend. What is Big Jay’s take on the Boston comedy scene?

of “Cops,” guys having their shirts off, I’m sure. How did you become friends with late Boston comic Patrice O’Neal? I lucked out in a sense that through mentorship and friendship, I was brought into his world, very young into my career. At this point in his career, he was very revered by the comedy community, not by the mainstream world yet. He just took some interest in me, kind of an organic friendship.

Have a laugh with Big Jay. PROVIDED

They’re well-informed comedy fans. They have a keen eye for it, for sure. My comedy is 100 percent edge. I feel like I don’t have to baby them for my first 15 minutes. They’re ready for it out of the gate.

Boston is a big sports town, too. Are you a die-hard sports fan? I don’t just sit and watch sports, like whatever’s on, I follow die-hard the Philadelphia Eagles and the Philadelphia 76ers. But

So what did you think of your hometown hosting the NFL draft? Everyone said it was a really amazing experi-

ence there, which is funny because what everyone loved about it was the “Philly-ness” of it. Everyone’s like, “This is the place we should do it every year.” These fans are nuts, so it was probably like an episode

Calling all Rebel scum and scruffy-looking nerf herders: Your favorite holiday has returned. While the release of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is still many months away, fans can get their fix of this far, far away galaxy right here in Boston for the annual May the Fourth celebration. From special screenings to intergalactic cocktails, here’s how you can feel the Force.

1

“The Force Awakens” at the Museum of Science

As part of Boston’s ArtWeek series, the Museum of Science’s Charles Hayden Planetarium will host special screenings of “Star Wars: Episode VII” on Thursday. While the observatory usually features incredible images of stars and other celestial bodies, this time it will serve as a backdrop to the amazing adventures of Rey,

“Spaceballs” at Brattle Theatre

If you’re a “Star Wars” fan who can take a joke, head over to Cambridge on Thursday for the Brattle Theatre’s “first ever epic troll” of May the Fourth. The theater has a pair of screenings planned to get under the skin of

Jedi fanatics, featuring back-to-back showings of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” and “Spaceballs.” The later is director’s Mel Brooks’ 1987 parody of the “Star Wars” franchise, which has become a cult classic in its own right. Feast with Pedro at Fenway The Red Sox legend on this weekend’s big banquet. BRENDAN MCGUIRK

Grab a bite with the Martinez family.

All proceeds go to the Pedro Martinez Charity. ALL PHOTOS PROVIDED

For more than one generation of Red Sox fans, there’s no dream more thrilling than catching a few moments with legendary ace Pedro Martinez. In their eyes, the pitcher owns Fenway Park in a way even John Henry never could, and on Saturday, at a special charity event Martinez is putting on at the storied ballpark, Sox supporters will have their opportunity to rub elbow-to-gifted-elbow with Pedro to share a meal in support of a cause near to the heart of the Dominican Hall of Famer. At Feast with 45, guests will join Pedro and wife Carolina and their friends in the local sports and restaurant com-

munities to socialize at Fenway while dining on plates prepared by some of Boston’s most distinguished chefs. All event proceeds will go to the Pedro Martinez Charity, which supports underprivileged children and families in Pedro’s native Dominican Republic. “It’s like me going to dinner with 40,000 people!” Martinez says. After years of being deified on the mound, he is eager to connect with the crowds that cheered him to victory so many times. “It is actually the first time ever that I have the opportunity to kind of interact with my fans,” he says, “as a regular human being, away from the uniform.”

If you go May 6, 6-10 p.m., Fenway Park $35-$500 feastwith45.eventbrite.com

Martinez cooked up the food-centric event with the help of awardwinning Colonnade Hotel Chef Nicholas Calias, alongside whom the threetime Cy Young Award winner says he has dined at nearly every restaurant in the city. After observing the causal chemistry Pedro enjoys with his loyalists when the two go out, Calias pitched the idea of a big shared meal with

fans. Now he and over 30 other chefs will craft a menu for Pedro and the public to nosh on while mingling, taking pictures and supporting the community that Boston owes for raising one of its most revered sports heroes. With Carolina serving as executive director, the Pedro Martinez Charity helps hundreds of children and families in the Dominican get the aid they need. And while Pedro jokingly notices modern Fenway crowds are not quite so raucous as they were in his heyday (“I see more of a polite group of people,” he quips), he is hopeful that those who supported him in the past will now join in supporting his efforts back home.

Saturday promises a sea of friendly faces at Fenway, but when asked if any vanquished former Yankee rivals might be in attendance, Pedro was quick to deal some high cheese he knew would strike Sox fans with long memories. “Karim Garcia did not get an invitation on time,” Pedro cheekily says of the onetime New York reserve outfielder who dared to challenge the pitcher’s character. “But you know what, he will be welcome if he comes up! Any Yankee is welcome -— I’m not responsible for what happens with my Boston fans, though. I cannot supply security. But they’re welcome to come!”

Hit the lanes with Christopher Knight The “Brady Bunch star is back for the Journey Forward Fundraiser. MATT JUUL

Peter Brady, a.k.a. “Brady Bunch icon Christopher Knight, returns to the Boston area this week to host the ninth annual Journey Forward Vegas Casino Night. The event, which also features an appearance by Bay State boxing legend Micky Ward, is the biggest fundraiser of the year for Canton-based nonprofit Journey Forward. The organization helps patients suffering with spinal-cord injuries through an intense exercise program. Attendees at Thursday’s extravaganza will get the chance to bowl with the stars, hang out with an Elvis Presley impersonator and play casino games. “There’s nothing glitzy and glamorous about it, Knight says. “It’s just a fun, feel-good evening, which goes to treat people. Every dollar helps.

Journey Forward was spearheaded by Dan Cummings, who in 2000 was told by doctors that he’d never walk or even feed himself again after breaking his neck at the age of 19. Instead of letting the injury control his life, Cummings took action by heading to the West Coast to focus on his recovery at a California

rehabilitation center. “I just really believed that as long as I took it one day at a time and gave it everything I had, there would come a day where I would walk again, Cummings says. The Massachusetts native accomplished his goal in 2007, walking out of the center with just the aid of his walker. The pro-

cess inspired Cummings to return to his home state in order to help locals with spinal-cord injuries. Journey Forward has rapidly expanded its reach over the years and now helps more than 90 clients. The organization also partners with the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation to provide much-needed data for research into spinalcord injuries. “With the proper tools and treatment, recovering from spinal-cord injuries is possible, Cummings says.

Revisiting Pittsburgh There’s much to love about the culinary and outdoor options in this revitalized city. Times have changed, and so has Pittsburgh. A generation ago, the Gateway to the Midwest was stereotyped as a grimy Rust Belt city with pedestrian grub and Iron City beer. However, big changes over the past decade mean that Pittsburgh doesn’t exist anymore. The City of Bridges —

there are 446 of them crossing the three rivers that flow through the city — is a polished gem, with rolling hills and lush greenery that resembles San Francisco.

Your next culinary destination When it comes to food, Pittsburgh gives any town

in America a run for its money. According to Zagat, Pittsburgh was the No. 1 culinary town in 2015 and made Restaurant Technology’s Top 10 list for 2016. Pittsburgh earned these accolades through a mix of fine eclectic fare and old-school favorites. Morcilla has replaced the late, lamented Grit

and Grace as Pittsburgh’s fine-dining destination, with starring dishes like the Foie Blonde (chicken liver and foie gras mousse with brandied prunes) and wild salmon crudo with saffron sidra and crispy shiitake. Pierogies still claim pride of place in this city, and some of the best are served at the Church Brew Works. The restaurant is located inside the gorgeous historic landmark that is St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, where your seats are pews and you’re watched over by the saints depicted in its restored stained-glass windows. An array of fine, local microbrews are on tap. There are a number of old-school diners that serve up a fine breakfast, such as Pamela’s. However, the best breakfast goes to Waffles INCaffeinated. Order the Funky Monkey, a waffle topped with big chocolate chips, bananas and homemade peanut butter chiffon and a fudge sauce with three syrups (go with bourbon!). Sorry, vegetarians, but Pittsburgh’s signature delicacy is the Primanti

sandwich of steak, cheese, coleslaw (sans mayo), a few slices of tomato and some fries between two slices of fresh Italian bread. If you’re going to hit Primanti Bros., make sure you visit the original location on the Strip (46

If you prefer to keep your feet on dry land, the Three Rivers Heritage Trail is a free 24-mile stretch of well-paved paths starting at the Chateau and ending at Glenwood Bridge. You can hike, bike or rollerblade along the bucolic path, which runs along both sides of Pittsburgh’s three rivers. Or just walk the city. Part of Pittsburgh’s appeal is that it’s a small town with many amenities within walking distance. There is typically no need for a cab because many restaurants, museums and other attractions are within blocks of downtown. Scaling the incline in the Squirrel Hill section is a scenic urban hike; reward yourself with a stop at Mineo’s Pizza, which has been the neighborhood’s go-to pizza joint since 1958 for its tangy sauce and generous toppings.

offseason (a Saints trade seemed like a done deal on numerous occasions), it looks like the hero of Super Bowl 49 is here to stay ‌ at least through the 2017 season. Good for Butler for putting on a happy face. No word on if he bumped into Bill Belichick at the game, as the HC of the NEP was lurking over the court in a luxury box — generally looking all Emperor Palpatine-ish.

BALTIMORE VS. BOSTON STON Not so much. With the Celtics and Wizards facing off in the playoffs too, the folks in the greater D.C. area aren’t in love with us right now. Throw in Ravens-Patriots, which also has some great history, mostly due to blowhards John Harbaugh and Terrell Suggs, and D.C. might be our biggest geographical sports rival

The AL East race is going to be a fun one this year as the Orioles, Yankees and Red Sox all look like they have playoff-caliber teams. The bad blood right now between the Red Sox and Orioles rivals that of the Red Sox-Yankees battles of the early 2000s, and it’s clear Boston-Baltimore is “a thing right now. Boston vs. New York?

Creeps everywhere were happy to learn that Aaron Hernandez’s murder/death car, which was the focal point of a 2012 doublemurder, was up for sale on eBay this week. The vehicle was going for a cool $19,300 before eBay pulled it from its site, citing a violation of its “Offensive Materials policy. Here is what the posting said: “This is the REAL DEAL !!! It’s perfectly acceptable if you’re still in awe of what Isaiah Thomas was able to do in Game 2 of the Celtics-Wizards series. But the truth (tooth?) is that the 5-foot9 point guard has been surprising people his entire life, regardless of the level or stage he’s on. We’re all just seeing it to the extreme now. The Celtics roll into our nation’s capital for Game 3 Thursday (8 p.m., ESPN) winners of six straight games, and hold a commanding 2-0 series lead over the Wizards after Thomas’ historic 53-point effort on his late sister Chyna’s 23rd birthday Tuesday in Boston. The C’s franchise has never blown a playoff

about the 1How other guards?

The Celtics have had a ton of success when Thomas is out there with Avery Bradley and now Terry Rozier. Believe it or not, Rozier was a gamehigh plus-25 in Game 2, a full 15 points higher than Thomas, and in just 25 minutes. Rozier has taken huge steps in the playoffs to become a key rotation player. Bradley gave everybody a scare when he left the game with a hip injury, but he returned and hit a huge 3-pointer to put Boston up three late in the fourth quarter. He also picked a couple of Wiz-

executing to get those shots. They got off to an extremely sloppy start, turning the ball over nine times in that quarter. For that reason, the Wizards outshot them 24 to 16, and outscored them 42 to 29, despite the fact that Boston shot 69 percent from the field. The C’s finished in the

top-10 in turnovers during the regular season, so it was uncharacteristic to come out this way and once again put them behind by double-digits early on. Boston won’t have the crowd on its side in Game 3 to help them rally back from a big deficit. If they start off poorly for the third straight game

Brad Stevens has figured out a lot of things, but one thing he hasn’t seemed to get right the last few games is who the fifth starter is for his team. The Gerald Green honeymoon looks like it ended after Game 1, but Amir Johnson’s return for Game 2 didn’t go so hot either, as he was a minus-8 in the first 4:31 of the game and didn’t touch the court again. So what now? One solution might be to start rookie Jaylen Brown, who showed up in 11:41 of time in Game 2, and drew praise from Stevens after the game. Sure, the C’s would be small, but the matchups aren’t all that bad and Stevens can still count on heavy minutes from Marcus Smart, Kelly Olynyk, and Rozier off the bench.

HOW CHRIS SALE BECAME THE SOX’ NEW CAPTAIN OPINION

DANNY PICARD

@dannypicard

It needed to happen. And it needed to happen on Tuesday night at Fenway Park. With two outs in the top of the first inning, Chris Sale threw a 98 mph fastball behind the knees of Manny Machado. Both the Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles received warnings from the home plate umpire. By my calculations, it was the Red Sox’ attempt to even things up after Orioles starter Dylan Bundy hit Mookie Betts in the hip with a fastball the previous night. This feud began nearly two weeks ago at Camden Yards, when Machado slid over second base and spiked Dustin Pedroia,

forcing him to miss several games. Two games later, Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes responded by throwing a fastball over the head of Machado. When Betts was hit on Monday night, it reeked of retaliation for Barnes’ attempted chin music. But if you’re willing to accept that Machado’s slide is what started this whole fiasco, then you should also be willing to accept that the Red Sox owed one to the O’s. That’s where Sale entered the picture. It didn’t have to be Machado. Of course, the spotlight was still on him after he pimped a home run off Rick Porcello on Monday night, watching it fly and taking a whole 30 seconds to round the bases. Then there’s his history of being involved with on-field altercations, because, lets face it, he’s a punk.

Again, it didn’t have to be Machado. But it had to be somebody. And not just to even things up. There was more to this than an “eye for an eye. The Red Sox were embarrassed the night before. They lost the game to the Orioles on Monday. Betts was plunked. And Machado was prancing around the base paths as if to rub it in that he was feeling nice and comfortable at the plate in Boston. The Sox also made four errors in the loss and had a costly base-running blunder in the eighth inning, which was clearly Hanley Ramirez’ fault. It was a play in which Andrew Benintendi didn’t go to third on Ramirez’ hit to left field. Ramirez rounded first and kept running to second, resulting in both Benintendi and Ramirez standing on the same base. Afterward, Ramirez

said this: “I don’t throw my teammates under the bus. That’s my fault. That’s it. Make of that what you will. But you can’t convince me it wasn’t a shot at Pedroia, who threw Barnes under the bus immediately after Barnes was ejected for throwing at Machado. According to reports, Ramirez tried to protect Barnes from the media in the days after Pedroia’s public apology to Machado. So when Ramirez decries throwing teammates under the bus after a frustrating night where the Red Sox were completely embarrassed by that same Orioles team, I don’t believe there’s any coincidence. And somewhere in the middle of it all, you had Xander Bogaerts telling reporters that the team misses David Ortiz, following a loss to the New York

Yankees at Fenway last week. Of course they miss Ortiz. But spilling your guts about it after a loss was another sign that this thing was taking a turn for the worse. At that point, the Red Sox needed more than just retribution. They needed a new leader. They desperately needed some-

one to step up and say, “This is my team now. So Sale let one fly behind Machado. Then he went on to strike out 11 in eight innings, leading the Red Sox to a win. The Red Sox got even with the Orioles on Tuesday. But they also got something more important in the process. A new captain.

Aries Collaborate with your peers in order to come up with ideas regarding a project you are working on or an idea you want to present and launch. Celebrate with a loved one.

Libra You don’t need to use force if you use intelligence. Offer suggestions and incentives to get others on board. Charm will help you get exactly what you want.

Taurus Take pleasure in doing the things you enjoy with the people who make you happy. Outings with a loved one will give you greater insight into your relationships.

Scorpio Look over contracts, settlements and investments carefully. A joint venture may not be as good as you think. Check out alternative ways to use your skills.

Gemini Work on self-improvements instead of trying to change others. Your input into how someone should live will result in an argument that will be difficult to resolve.

Sagittarius Emotional problems will set in if you don’t communicate honestly. Trying to keep the peace by withholding your true feelings won’t solve the problem.

Cancer Don’t get angry when you should be taking care of business. It’s up to you to set the standard, follow through with your plans and reap the rewards.

Capricorn An investment opportunity will entice you, but do your research first. An impulsive move will box you into a situation that could have serious ramifications.

Leo Someone’s inaccuracy will disappoint you. Don’t get stuck on what you cannot change, when you should do something that will bring progressive results.

Aquarius Make plans to get together with someone you don’t see often. Discussing past dreams will inspire you to take a second look at some.

Virgo Do your best to avoid a disagreement with one of your peers. Proceed quietly to avoid interference. Working from home will help you accomplish more in less time.

Pisces You can make personal changes, but first iron out any foreseeable difficulties. Getting along with your peers or a partner will be necessary to excel. EUGENIA LAST
