KCNA: N. KOREA DETAINS HEAD OF ISLAMIC STATE AMERICAN CITIZEN IN AFGHANISTAN KILLED

Democrats criticized the lack of women on a working group in the Republican-led Senate that will craft a plan to pass legislation to repeal and replace Obamacare. Senators questioned why the 13-member working group put together by Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell does not include any of the chamber’s five Republican women. “Women’s health is a big part of this and women are a

majority of the population, and their health interests deserve to be contemplated in any reform,” Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” REUTERS

North Korea said on Sunday it has detained another U.S. citizen on suspicion of “hostile acts” against the state, which would make him the fourth American to be held by the isolated country amid heightened diplomatic tensions with Washington. Emmanuel Macron was elected French president on Sunday with a business-friendly vision of European integration, defeating Marine Le Pen, a far-right nationalist who threatened to take France out of the European Union. The centrist’s

emphatic victory, which also smashed the dominance of France’s mainstream parties, will bring huge relief to European allies who had feared another populist upheaval to follow Britain’s vote to quit the EU and Donald Trump’s election as U.S. president.

CUBA HOSTS FIRST TRANSGENDER MASS

For decades belonging to a religion and being anything but heterosexual was stigmatized in Communistruled, macho Cuba, making the Mass held by three transgender pastors in the western Cuban city of Matanzas all the more groundbreaking. Rainbow flags decorated the chapel, while the pastors, who had flown in from Brazil, Canada and the United States, wore stoles in the trans

hues of light blue, pink and white and the congregation swayed to Caribbean beats. Friday was the first time a trans pastor held a Holy Communion in Cuba, highlighting how much the island nation has changed since both religious believers and homosexuals went to “correctional” labor camps in the early years after the 1959 revolution. The head of Islamic State in Afghanistan, Abdul Hasib, was killed in an operation on April 27 conducted jointly by Afghan and U.S. Special Forces in the eastern province of Nangarhar, U.S. and Afghan officials said. Hasib, appointed last year after his predecessor Hafiz Saeed Khan died in a U.S. drone strike, is believed to have ordered a series of high profile attacks including one in March 8 on the main military hospital

in Kabul. Last month, a Pentagon spokesman said Hasib had probably been killed during the raid by U.S. and Afghan special forces in Nangarhar during which two U.S. army Rangers were killed, but prior to Sunday’s announcement there had been no confirmation. This successful operation is another important step in our relentless campaign to defeat ISIS-K in 2017,” U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Nicholson said. REUTERS

TRUMP’S AMERICA

DOES JESUS LOVE DONALD, TOO? Does Jesus love Donald Trump? That’s a trick question. Of course he does. The son of God loves everyone. But that doesn’t mean Jesus is a Republican. Or a Democrat. Or that he wanted us all to vote last November to Make America Great Again. That’s not how the Prince of Peace rolls. Same goes for Yahweh, for Muhammad, for Buddha — for all your major religious figures. They preach values. They teach understanding and forgiveness. They even sketch out moral and ethical codes. But they never, ever, ever — not once — tell the believers whom to vote for on Election Day. So why should today’s

earthbound clergymen who claim to speak in the name of the divine? And if these modernday Philistines insist on issuing endorsements from the pulpit, should their sermons really be subsidized by American taxpayers? Jesus was clear on this. “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and unto God the things that are God’s,” he told the church elders who were trying to trip him up with a question about Roman tax policy. Yes, 1,700 years before the Constitution, he was already promoting the separation between church and state. What brings this up is Donald Trump’s latest executive order, directing the IRS to quit enforcing

the so-called Johnson Amendment. That sensible rule, which goes all the way back to Lyndon Johnson’s days in Congress, says that ministers, priests, rabbis and other clergy can engage in lots of political activities — anything short of actual candidate endorsements. If they insist, they risk their churches’ tax-exempt status. No religious organization likes the sound of that!

But some extremists on the religious right want to pretend the almighty was a tea party Republican. They backed Donald. Donald’s paying them back.

This is already being challenged in the courts, as you knew it would be. Let us pray that some judge knows the Bible and the Constitution!

Veterans use improv classes to gain confidence back in civilian life Northeastern University teamed up with Improv Asylum to offer classes to veterans and service members so they can build their communication skills. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

kristin.toussaint@metro.us

Before Andrew McCarty joined the military, he was involved in theater and improv troupes. He had no problem standing in front of people and doing something silly to make them laugh. But when he got out of the service, something had changed. “When I went through my transition out of the Air Force in 2004, I wasn’t prepared for how different I had become, he said. “I had trouble — and still do, sometimes — around a small conference table, really finding my voice and the confidence to speak up. He’s returning to improv to help himself and other veterans improve their communication skills through a partnership between Northeastern University and Boston’s Improv Asylum.

McCarty is the director of Northeastern’s Center for the Advancement of Veterans and Servicemembers (CAVS). That’s where he helped set up an improv class open to all vets, whether or not they’re current students at the school. “I was indoctrinated into the culture of the military, and coming out of that culture was tough because your jokes don’t land and some things you

Hollywood wants Paris Jackson to be the next ‘it girl’ Paris Jackson is like, a thing now. The, um, daughter of Michael Jackson and Debbie Rowe has been everywhere, lately. According to People, the 19-year-old made her red carpet debut in January, signed with IMG Models in March, and is now set to get a starring role in a film with Charlize Theron. According to Page Six, Jackson has reportedly signed a seven-figure deal with Calvin Klein. “This deal is to make Paris the new face and body of Calvin Klein,” a source tells the site. “Expect to see Paris in huge ad cam-

But sometimes she squeezes in a film between long shoots. One was “The Overnight.” Her latest is “Take Me,” a small, very funny indie. Pat Healy (who also directed) plays an entrepreneur with a bizarre business: He loans himself out to people who want to be kidnapped, who see it as some form of therapy. Schilling plays his latest client/victim. But as the job goes awry, it becomes clear that she’s not being entirely honest with him.

We talked to the actress, 32, as she was nursing a salad. So we wound up talking food. How’s your salad? It’s good. I dunno, I’m simple. I’ve got very plebeian tastes. I don’t care. I’m not a foodie. No? No. I really wish I was more of a food connoisseur. I eat eggs, and chicken, and cereal. I eat like a 2-year-old a lot of the time. Maybe you’ll become a foodie later in life and get really into truffle fries. Truffle fries are good. But also regular fries are

It was rad? Yeah. I ate like the rest of America, so it was amazing.

“Take Me,” like “The Overnight,” is a small film that’s fun, but goes to dark places, and a film you were able to make while on break from “Orange.” Do you get a lot of chances to do this kind of stuff in between seasons? No. It’s hard. I crave it a lot, and I miss it. I always feel this sense of guilt that I’m not doing more theater. It’s like “Sophie’s Choice” every time my break comes, because I don’t know what to do

Your character here is kind of the opposite of Piper. She’s a lot more confident and driven. She’s a renegade, this woman. She has this sense of, “I’m going to get what I want. I’m in charge of you, and I’m better than you, and I’m smarter than you.” I thought of her as an addict. She’s a very lonely person who needs to get this particular high to be able to go on with the rest of her life. She needs to feel dominated, then she needs to dominate. It’s sad. She’s a sad woman. But I’m attracted to that. I’m attracted to people who can’t accept themselves — who are struggling, who are really feeling like they’re on the fringes. MATT PRIGGE

prove I’m a tough guy by letting someone set me on fire. I recently saw a quote from someone — I can’t remember who, I want to say Tom Cruise— saying that it’s a matter of putting the work above pride, not wanting to jeopardize a production just to prove you’ve got big balls. Absolutely. But that wasn’t Tom Cruise, I can tell you that.

CHARLES BRAMESCO @MetroBoston letters@metro.us

Remember when Dave Bautista was a wrestler? He’s not one anymore. Now he’s a movie star, thanks to the first “Guardians of the Galaxy. As literal-minded behemoth Drax the Destroyer, he’s the gang’s most powerful kicker of alien ass. In the sequel “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, he makes for a reliable source of deadpan comic relief as well. He even gets to play a little emotional this time around, mourning his lost spouse and tiptoeing around a flirtation with an unusual newcomer. Underneath lovable lunkhead Drax’s red-andblue facepaint, however, Dave Bautista is human after all. We talked to the

How do those stack up against one another? As far as fight choreography in films goes, I love doing it. I prefer to do it myself. But I have a very capable stuntman, who

I’ll call without hesitation if there’s a bigger stunt. For example, there was a part in “Spectre where I had to get set on fire, and I was very honest right from the beginning: I just had absolutely zero interest in getting set on fire. Like, “I would really appreciate not getting set on fire.I don’t have that type of personality where I can

Right, because doing his own stunts is his whole thing. I’ve been on a film where I’ve gotten injured, and the whole production just has to shut down. So it doesn’t make sense to draw all that trouble over something stupid. I’m just not qualified to get set on fire.

Next Level It looks to me like you’re about to get bumped up to the next level of stardom — you’ve landed a major franchise, and you’re going to be in “Blade Runner 2049 this fall. Has there been an adjustment, going from the fame of a wrestler to that of a movie star?I live in Tampa, and I live a very simple life. I don’t get recognized that much, and when I do, I’d say 95 percent of the time it’s from wrestling. People still don’t make the connection with “Guardians of the Galaxy,or if they do, it’s because they followed me there from wrestling. I don’t mind it. It makes sense; I was on TV every week for almost 10 years, so of course that’s what they’ll know me from. Florida’s a weird state. The most bizarre crime reports all come from Florida, I’ve noticed. My mom always says she likes coming to visit me in Florida just to watch the news. She lives in San Francisco and she just loves it. It’s like watching “The Jerry Springer Show.

The profession is rapidly growing. SARA FEINSTEIN @SaraBFeinstein

sara.feinstein@metro.us

National Nurses Week began Saturday, which means it’s time to celebrate and learn more about this in-demand field. Between taking care of patients, educating the public about health conditions and providing emotional support to family members, a nurse’s job affects a very large community. We spoke with Diane Mancino, the executive director at the National Student Nurses Association, to find out more about this widely respected and highly valued profession:

What does a nurse do? In its most simplified form, “the nurse’s role is to keep patients healthy, bring them back to health, and provide them comfort when they cannot be brought back to health, by allowing them to have a comfortable passing,” says Mancino. Throughout the day, nurses stay in close contact with patients, assessing their progress, their physical and mental needs, and providing the necessary treatment. That can range anywhere from making sure they’re taking their

medications to coordinating care from other services such as physical therapy or social work. “Nurses look at patients holistically,” says Mancino. “They’re not just looking at a specific body system — they’re looking at all of the needs of a patient.”

What schooling do you need? “Nursing, unlike other health professions, has several entry points,” says Mancino. Students can either get a bachelor of science degree in nursing, an associate’s degree in nursing or a diploma from an approved nursing program. After that, they need to take the National Council Licensure Examination so they can become either a registered or practical nurse.

What’s the typical salary? The median annual salary for registered nurses was $68,450 in May 2016, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics. The best-paid 10 percent in the profession made $102,990, while the lowest-paid 10 percent made $47,120.

Is it hard to find employment? Between the large number of registered nurses who are retiring and the

aging baby boomers, “we’re seeing an increase in demand for nurses,” says Mancino. “And not only in acute-care settings, but also in the community,” she continues. “We have a lot of older people who have chronic illnesses — things like arthritis and diabetes — that need to be monitored at home to make sure they’re taking their medications correctly and getting the services and supplies that they need.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics also expects the profession to grow 16 percent by 2024, during which an estimated 439,300 jobs will open up.

The pros One of the best parts of the job is the fact that there are so many different areas to work in. You can become a nurse educator and teach nursing, work as a nurse researcher, or even go into advanced practice nursing where you’re doing primary care in different settings, Mancino explains. “If you get bored in one place doing one thing, you can always switch it up.” There’s also the respect that comes with the profession, says Mancino. “We have high ethical standards, are recognized for being honest and, I think probably more than anything else, we’re there for patients around the clock.”

The state of the Boston Cannons Major League Lacrosse’s New England franchise is looking to win its first title since 2011. RICH SLATE @RichSlate

sports@metro.us

In the immediate aftermath, Saturday night’s 1918 loss to the Chesapeake Bayhawks (1-1) in the rain and cold was a tough one to digest for the Boston Cannons (1-2) in their home opener at Harvard Stadium. After all, they had led 14-9 at halftime and appeared well on their way to a comfortable win before Chesapeake turned the tables on them with a stunning 10-4 second half spurred by star midfielder Myles Jones (five goals, including a two-pointer and four assists) who proved to be virtually unstoppable. With that said, there are plenty of things for the Cannons to be excited about as far as the 2017 campaign goes with 11 games left (six at home and five on the road). “We have to play better 6-on-6 defense,” admitted Cannons defenseman James Fahey, who scored a goal versus the Bayhawks. “We can’t let one guy dictate how we mentally play with each other.

Cannons attacker Will Manny, left, excelled at UMass and now looks to lead Boston’s offense in Major League Lacrosse. GETTY IMAGES

It was a great learning lesson for next week.” Saturday was the start of a four-game home stand for Boston, which will take them through June 3. Even in the unfavorable conditions for fans, nearly 5,000 people still managed to show up. That is a good sign since the weather should only get better as the season

goes along. In their second year back at Harvard Stadium (also home of Harvard football), the Cannons feel like a natural fit in Cambridge. Parking is free and the Sports Hub’s Jim Murray is the on-field emcee during the games. Boston has gone 8-6 the last two seasons and while that was good

enough for them to reach the playoffs in 2015, they missed out last season based on a tiebreaker. Seven of the nine teams in MLL were 8-6, which is still hard to fathom. Their lone MLL title came in 2011. As their first three contests of this campaign have shown, the Cannons have one of the top of-

fenses in the league. They won 18-17 in their season opener at the Florida Launch before falling 1310 in Atlanta to the Blaze. They’ve scored in doubledigits in each game but likewise, they have also allowed even more (13plus each time). Clearly, they’ll need to tighten things up on the defensive end to reach the

postseason once again. The Cannons starting attackmen of Kylor Bellistri (eight goals, three assists), Will Manny (eight goals, three assists) and Davey Emela (nine goals, one assist) form just about the best unit that you’ll find in MLL. All three of them had a hat trick against the Bayhawks and it’s not unreasonable to expect them to put up big point totals all season long since they give opposing defenses plenty to worry about. Which one of those guys do you choose to focus on the most? “We scored 18 goals so I’m expecting to win that game,” noted Manny, “But if the defense is struggling, it’s on the offense to score one or two more and we didn’t. We have to finish games, especially if we start fast.” Lacrosse has never been more popular both in the New England region and nationally. All of Boston’s games will be shown on the Bostonbased Lax Sports Network while the league also has begun a lucrative streaming deal with Twitter to show live games free of charge on the powerful social media platform. The NCAA men’s lacrosse tournament (Final Four for Division I and title games in Divisions II and III) comes back to Gillette Stadium this Memorial Day weekend.

Sox starters stepping up early in season The Red Sox’ bats finally came alive Saturday in an 11-1 win over the Twins in Minnesota. Despite the big offensive day, the Sox entered play on Sunday ranked 23rd in the league in runs scored with 121 total. Due mostly to the offensive futility, the Sox are currently looking up at the Yankees and Orioles in the AL East. One thing that hasn’t held the Sox back this season, though, has been their starting pitching. Chris Sale has been otherworldly overall, but Boston’s other starters have stepped up their game as well. Drew Pomeranz (3-1, 4.00 ERA), who will get the ball Tuesday when the Sox open up a three-game

set with the Brewers in Milwaukee, has had only one dud of a start this season in five games. The lefty has been pretty consistent this season

CHRIS SALE’S ERA IN SIX STARTS WITH THE RED SOX IN 2017 after a rocky end of 2016. He has given up just two earned runs in each of his last three games, and in his first start of the season — April 11 against Baltimore — he allowed just one earned run.

Pomeranz has simply been a different, and better, pitcher so far this season than Sox fans saw after the midseason trade with San Diego last year. He has embraced pitching in Boston. “This is a much different place than I’ve ever been,” Pomeranz said. “I feel like everyone is our rival. It’s not hard to get fired up for these games.” Eduardo Rodriguez (1-1, 3.07 ERA) has also proven to be capable this year, as he hasn’t given up more than three earned runs in a game since his season opener at Detroit — a game in which he surrendered four earned runs. And then there’s the

reigning AL CY Young Award winner, Rick Porcello (2-4, 3.95 ERA). Like Sale, Porcello hasn’t received the best run support this season as he has a 2-4 win-loss record. But Porcello has very much looked like the same pitcher from last season. He was exceptionally sharp in the Sox’ blowout win over the Twins on Saturday, giving up just one earned run on seven hits while striking out six. He has had only out outing this season (April 14 vs. Tampa Bay) in which he’s given up more than four earned runs. The only run he gave up on Saturday was a solo home run to Robbie Grossman. FANTASY BASEBALL: HOLD OR SELL SOME EARLY SEASON SURPRISES OPINION

KYLE BISHOP @amoralpanic

Last week, we covered the rest-of-season outlooks for three established fantasy stars who have gotten off to slow starts. Today, we’ll look at three of the most surprising elite performances and try to determine those players’ values moving forward Ryan Zimmerman, 1B, Washington Nationals Looking at the top of the hitter leaderboards, you see plenty of the usual

suspects, but the name at the top, while a familiar one, stands out. It’s Zimmerman, of course. The veteran was a reliable fantasy producer earlier in the decade, but chronic injuries and diminished results had him off of most owners’ radar in 2017. All he’s done is hit an absurd .435/.472/.907, with 13 home runs and 34 RBIs. While his peripherals do suggest legitimate improvement, nobody is this good. Zimmerman’s .472 BABIP and 39.4 HR/FB% are wildly unsustainable, Sell. Aaron Judge, OF, New York Yankees Tied with Zimmerman for

the MLB lead in homers, Judge has already proven himself to have learned a thing or two from his terrible September cameo last year. The hulking 25-year-old has drastically cut down on swings and misses, making more contact and drawing plenty of walks. This improvement has allowed Judge’s massive power — always his calling card as a prospect — to be fully felt by opponents, as his .320/.416/.773 line makes abundantly clear. Still, expectations moving forward should be tempered. Judge still strikes out too much and more importantly, his 50.0 HR/FB is, to be collegial, completely insane. Hold.

Jason Vargas, SP, Kansas City Royals A 34-year-old journeyman with a career ERA over 4.00 and Tommy John surgery in his recent history, it’s safe to say fantasy owners weren’t reaching for Vargas in drafts this year. Yet he’s been among the best in baseball with a 1.19 ERA and 0.98 WHIP through six starts. He’s only averaging 86 miles per hour on his fastball, which gives him less margin for error than most pitchers. But there are real reasons for optimism as well. Vargas has always had a quality changeup and good control. Now he’s getting more swings and

Aaron Judge has been a huge contributor in fantasy baseball. GETTY IMAGES

misses than ever despite the lack of velocity. That’s thanks to a distinct change in approach where he’s attacking the zone, particularly the

inner half. It remains to be seen if the inevitable hitter adjustments can put a damper on Vargas’ newfound success. Hold/Sell.

Aries Stay focused on what you must accomplish. Letting personal matters deter you from taking care of your work responsibilities will leave you in an awkward position.

Libra Proceed with caution when dealing with domestic problems. Someone will be erratic and will overreact without notice. Choose your words wisely.

Taurus Do your own thing and protect against anyone or anything that threatens you or your success. Subtle changes will help bolster your confidence.

Scorpio There will be plenty of unspoken words that will keep you in the dark. When dealing with contractual, financial and health issues, ask questions.

Gemini Don’t wait for someone to intervene in a situation or put pressure on you. Make up your mind and move in a direction that will help you live life your way.

Sagittarius Get out and engage in things you believe in and enjoy doing. Set a schedule that includes what motivates you, and start living life to its fullest.

Cancer Say little and do a lot. Work quietly on your own and accomplish your goals. Don’t let anyone meddle in your affairs or take advantage of your kindheartedness.

Capricorn When dealing with institutions or government agencies or traveling to foreign countries, you should be cautious. Overreacting will not work out well.

Leo An open mind and a warm-hearted approach to life will help you keep bullies at arm’s length. Greater involvement in peace and environmental organizations is favored.

Aquarius Make good and uphold an old promise you made to yourself or someone from your past. Attending a reunion or repaying an old debt will make you feel good.

Virgo Contracts, agreements and home improvements will spring up out of necessity. An unexpected expense should be dealt with smartly. Don’t overspend.

Pisces If you are honest about the past, it will be easier to face the future. Reconnecting with someone will have an impact on your life. EUGENIA LAST
