A tunnel partly collapsed on Tuesday at a plutonium-handling facility at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington state, but there was no indication workers or the public were exposed to radiation, federal officials said. Workers evacuated or took cover and turned off ventilation systems after damage was discovered in the wall of a transport tunnel about 170 miles
east of Seattle, officials with the Department of Energy’s Hanford Joint Information Center said. The damage was more serious than initially reported, and the take-cover order was expanded to cover the entire facility after response crews found a 400-square-foot section of the decommissioned rail tunnel had collapsed, center spokesman Destry Henderson said in a video posted on Facebook. An apparently mentally unstable man caused panic among passengers on a airliner heading for Cairo from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia when he threatened to blow up the aircraft, airport sources said. The 61-year-old man, a retired textile worker from Egypt, was subdued by security staff on the plane, operated by Saudi airline Flynas, and arrested when it landed in the Egyptian capital, the sources
said. The man told police he was not aware of what he had done, according to the sources. He was being questioned and was expected to be referred to a psychiatrist to determine his mental state. State-run newspaper Ahramgate said no weapons or explosives were found with him. Air security is a sensitive topic in Egypt. An Egyptair plane crashed in the Mediterranean last year, killing all 66 people on board. REUTERS

Mom of three Morgan Loria is preparing to send her middle daughter to college, so she wanted to find a way to supplement her family’s income. Loria teaches French and Spanish, but it’s not enough to cover everything, she said. So she told her family she was thinking about driving for a ride-hailing app because of their flexible schedules. “My [oldest] daughter ‌ had heard about a rideshare service for women and said, ‘Mom, you should apply for that,’â€? Loria said. Loria hadn’t yet heard about Safr, a Boston-based company that says it is “redefining ride-sharing for women.â€? But as she learned about it, she grew excited that it was the right fit. She previously drove for Uber and Lyft, but her family had expressed some concerns about what kind of people she would be driving — like the possibility of picking up a group of drunk, rowdy men late at night from a bar. With Safr, she said, she has more control. “This is really a service women passengers have been waiting with bated breath for, and women drivers also,â€? Loria said. Both drivers and passengers are “made to feel more secure. ‌ It’s great to be of service to women and it feels different than just driving.â€? Safr launched in March and currently has about
150 drivers. More than 8,000 riders have downloaded the app. Safr focuses on providing a safe service for women passengers, but also on empowering women drivers and ensuring their financial security, said Safr marketing manager Joanna Humphrey Flynn. “There are less than 25 percent of women in ridesharing, and those who do drive make 34 percent less than men, she said. Safr originally billed itself as a women-only ride-hailing app but modified its platform to allow both men and women while still focusing on safety. Now, both drivers and riders can choose in the app which gender they’re most comfortable traveling with. If a female rider only wants a female driver, she can specify that when she signs up for Safr. Peak hours are often late at night, Flynn said, but a lot of women can’t work that late or don’t feel safe driving then. “By creating an environment where women don’t have to worry about personal safety concerns, we’ve really liberated them to take full advantage of the ride-sharing business, she said. With Safr, Loria is also now working for a company that has a mission she can completely support, she said. “I appreciate the flexibility because my youngest daughter is an athlete and participates in tournaments, so it gives me a chance to work around those hours, she said, “to be present and not miss out on that. Safr is offering a Mother’s Day promotion from May 8-13. Judge vacates Hernandez’s murder conviction Hernandez is no longer convicted of the murder of Odin Lloyd. ERIN TIERNAN @ErinTiernan

A judge has vacated the 2013 murder conviction of late NFL star Aaron Hernandez. Hernandez hanged himself in his Massachusetts jail cell on April 19. The following week, his lawyers then filed a motion to vacate the former Patriots tight end’s murder conviction. In Massachusetts, murder convictions are automatically appealed before the state’s highest court,
but since Hernandez died before that appeal could go through, a legal loophole called the Abatement Doctrine offered lawyers a way to get him off postmortem. “Whenever someone dies during an appeal of their criminal case, the conviction is eventually vacated. The reason for that is the way the law looks at it, you had an appeal going for you and for all they know, the appeal could have found you innocent, Peter Elikann, a Boston-based criminal defense lawyer, said in April. The judge agreed, dropping all charges. “In the interest of justice, the court has no choice but to vacate the conviction, Judge E. Su-

Bristol County DA Thomas Quinn III wrote in a court filing from last week that “abatementâ€? is not always required if a defendant dies while an appeal is pending.
Quinn said this is especially pertinent when “a defendant’s death is a result of his own conscious, deliberate and voluntary act, as with suicide, the AP reported. Hernandez’s suicide sent rumors swirling that he took his own life to ensure money for his family. The ex-Patriots player was playing for the team
on a $40 million contract, which was terminated after his 2013 arrest for Odin Lloyd’s murder. It is unclear whether the Patriots will be on the hook for further payout to Hernandez’s estate now that his murder conviction has been vacated, but if they are, lawyers have speculated the money would be untouchable by

civil wrongful death suits by Lloyd’s family and the families of two other alleged victims, Daniel de Abreau and Safiro Furtado. Hernandez was cleared of their murders in April just days before committing suicide. “Pensions [are] not reachable assets, so they are not able to collect against that, David White, former president of the Massachusetts Bar Association, said in April. Hernandez was otherwise broke. Court records filed earlier this month indicated his only asset was his New Bedford home, worth an estimated $1.3 million. Hernandez isn’t the first high-profile murderer to have a conviction tossed due to the Abatement Doctrine. John Salvi, who was convicted of killing two abortion clinic workers and wounding five others during a shooting spree in Brookline in 1994, had his convictions vacated after killing himself in prison two years later.

Pot regulation unsettled six months after ballot law’s passage The question of who will be in charge of overseeing the state’s new marijuana industry remains up in the air. The Legislature, Gov. Charlie Baker and Treasurer Deborah Goldberg continue to play a game of cat-and-mouse regarding marijuana regulation. On Nov. 8, 2016, Massachusetts voters approved a ballot law legalizing use of marijuana and authorizing a retail pot industry. But 183 days later, the question of who will be in charge of overseeing the marijuana industry remains up in the air. In December, the Legislature and Baker delayed implementation of that law by six months, passing a statute that left Goldberg in charge of regulation while pushing back from March 1 to Sept. 1 the deadline for her appointments to the Cannabis Control Commission. In January, Baker said any changes to the regulatory framework for legal cannabis should be made by April to ensure the deadlines can be met. Since then, the Legislature has formed a Committee on Marijuana Policy, which has held numerous public hearings with the goal of developing legislation signifi-

cantly altering the ballot law by June. Lawmakers say they still intend to facilitate the issuance of the retail licenses in July 2018. Meantime, there’s no regulatory structure of any kind in place. Goldberg says her office spent months preparing to implement the law, and lawmakers approved $300,000 in regulatory funding for Goldberg. Baker signed off on that appropriation in March, but his office has not released the money. A Baker administration
official declined to say why the money has been held up for six weeks. “The Executive Office for Administration and Finance will carefully administer the reserve funds and work with all parties involved to ensure the law is implemented responsibly, Sarah Finlaw, spokeswoman for the Executive Office of Administration and Finance, said in a statement. But it appears Baker’s team may be adhering to the Legislature’s wishes. In an April 3 letter, a

week after passing the bill authorizing the $300,000 appropriation, House Marijuana Committee Cochair Rep. Mark Cusack asked Administration and Finance Secretary Kristen Lepore to hold on to the $300,000 and said lawmakers hope to get a marijuana law rewrite to Baker by July 1. “Arguably the biggest recommendation made by the committee will be the structure of the recreational marijuana regulatory authority and how it operates, Cusack wrote. He said lawmakers are weighing having the treasurer as the sole regulatory authority or an “independent commission. Goldberg, Baker and legislative leaders discussed regulatory governance models at a private meeting last week. Goldberg called the meeting “a great first conversation and said the discussion covered “a lot of the technical aspects. “I think this was just a first conversation, and there’s a recognition that we will all be working collaboratively, and with the members of the committee because they have done a significant amount of work to try and figure out how to meet the needs of and the will of the people of Massachusetts and the way in which they voted, Goldberg said. Abby Lee Miller is going to jail, y’all Oh snap: Abby Lee Miller is going to the clinker. The “Dance Moms” terror’s bankruptcy fraud case has come to a close after a year and a half. Miller has been sentenced to one year in federal prison, followed by two years’ supervised release. According to People, Miller was charged with attempting to hide $775,000 of income from her Lifetime series and its spin off “Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition” during Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. She allegedly hid the money in secret bank accounts from
2012 to 2013. Shady! She was also accused of splitting $120,000 in Australian currency into separate plastic bags, and having different friends carry the amounts in their luggage. That’s against the law, apparently: People are supposed to report if they are bringing more than $10,000 of a foreign currency into the United States. Damn, the government is always up in someone’s business. Here’s hoping her experience in prison will be just like the first season of “Orange Is the New Black,” but perhaps less cinematic.

Otters and wolves. Not a great combination as far as my experience goes, but what do I know? I’m not the star of “New Girl,” a show that has majorly waned in popularity because, let’s be real, who wants to watch a bunch of people in their late 30s live in a perpetual state of young adulthood in a loft they absolutely can’t afford? I mean, I used to like “New Girl” a lot. But like most fantasies about marginally attractive people living together in what I assume used to be a Nabisco factory, it takes quite a bit of suspension of disbelief. But I digress. Congratulations to the happy couple!
Katy Perry says words about her new album Katy Perry and Taylor Swift are in a near-constant state of beefing. All because Perry apparently stole a dancer from Swift. It all started in 2014. Swift told Rolling Stone that “Bad Blood” was about another female artist. “She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour,” Swift said. “She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me.” According to Entertainment Weekly, some internet sleuthing led the majority of us to believe that her vaguely veiled comments were about Perry,
since she and Swift have had the same dancers on their tours. Now, Perry is set to release an album and she’s talking about it to everyone who will listen. But will she have a response to Swift’s “Bad Blood”? “There is no one thing that’s calling out any one person,” she says. “One thing to note is: You can’t mistake kindness for weakness and don’t come for me.” Oh lovely. Perry spouted a bunch of words without actually saying anything. That’s chill!

Diane Lane spends most of the romantic comedy “Paris Can Wait” traveling through France, digging into scrumptious-looking French dishes. It was all delicious. But acting and eating at the same time isn’t always easy. “I had some low notes in the reality of eating food,” Lane tells us. “My eyes started to strobe from eating too much chocolate — like I was going to have a seizure or something. friends, and I allow them to show off their foodieness to me. And I reap the benefits,” she says. In the film, the Oscarnominated actress, 52, plays Anne, the wife of a big-shot film producer played by Alec Baldwin. They’re due to travel from the Cannes Film Festival to Paris when he’s sudden-
ly called away on business. So he deposits her in the car of one of his assistants, Jacques (Arnaud Viard), a middle-aged Frenchman, who keeps making pit stops to grab food. We soon start wondering if this neglected woman and this sometimes quite forward European will fall in love. But “Par-
is Can Wait” isn’t a simple “Will they or won’t they?” movie. And Lane likes that the two characters spend most of the movie in a gray zone. “We’re so used to that ‘thumb up or down’ thing — live or die, does she

Jacques even confronts her about how she feels, in a way that few Americans would. “He’s frank. That’s why they say, ‘Pardon my French.’ Because if you actually do a literal translation of a lot of French, it’s actually pretty frank,” she says, with a laugh. For roles like “Paris Can Wait” — a romantic film about a middle-aged woman — Lane has to go outside Hollywood. In Hollywood she mostly plays mothers. Right now, she’s Martha Kent, aka Superman’s mom in the DC Cinematic Universe. (She’ll be reprising the role in this fall’s “Justice League.”) But even that, she thinks, can be empowering. “Being Superman’s mom is quite heroic, as far as the impact she has in creating a good man,” Lane explains. After all, moms are big deals. “We all make our therapists rich talking about our mothers, right? If it’s not one thing, it’s your mother — that’s the joke.”

For over a century, the Boston Pops have enchanted music lovers of all ages with their ability to combine orchestral classics with modern tastes. Thanks to upcoming performances by a “Hamilton” favorite and other superstars like Queen Latifah and Ben Folds, this season is shaping up to be another great year for the group. Ahead of Wednesday’s Opening Night, conductor Keith Lockhart explains why he’s excited to take the podium again this spring. The Pops’ 2017 season is pretty stacked. What are you excited about the most this year? I’m really happy with this season. I think it has a really good mix and interesting, first time things, like the world premiere of “Jaws” in concert live with orchestra, which nobody has done before. The world premiere of the orchestral version of “Sondheim on Sondheim,” which was our genesis, which we got [Stephen] Sondheim and [James] Lapine to agree to do. The overall focus on the music of John Williams, which is always an easy thing to focus on because there’s so much of it and it’s so good. That will be manifested in John being here for a
couple of performances, but also in my doing some full-length, John Williams evenings during the year. From Leslie Odom Jr. to the B-52s, there are a lot of superstars coming to town, too. Leslie Odom Jr., that’s a big thing for me because I think his work has been amazing. Queen Latifah we’ve worked on for four or five years to get her to join us, and it finally worked. And Ben Folds is one

of my favorite singersongwriters, so having him back is great. The B52s will rock the house and make a major ’80s statement. So what’s not to love? Have anything special in store for Queen Latifah’s Opening Night appearance? She doesn’t do a lot of

orchestral dates like this, but she’s a beautiful jazz pop singer, and because people know her from different things, TV and all that, they don’t necessarily know that she does that, except maybe if they’ve seen her in “Chicago,” the movie. She’s an amazing talent and I’m looking forward to seeing what we do with her. What’s it like collaborating with such a master of the craft like John Williams? I met John for the first time the night before the press conference that announced me as his successor. He remains the model of a gentleman and a gracious, supportive colleague. He doesn’t wear his fame. He’s a very modest, quiet kind of a guy that has always been around with advice. I feel privileged. John never met his predecessor at the Pops. [Arthur] Fielder was dead before John came here. It’s been great to have the eminence grise position there. I’m glad he’s coming to both the

The Pops have a packed season in store for 2017. Here are five concerts you don’t want to miss this year. 1. “Jaws” in Concert May 25-26, 8 p.m. 2. John Williams Film Night May 31-June 1, 8 p.m. 3. premiere of “Jaws” and I’m sharing the podium for two nights the next week for Film Night. Considering the current political attitudes towards the fine arts, do you feel like this season is more important than ever? I think the position of the Boston Pops has always been important, and perhaps more important now than ever in my time here. We are, I think, one of the great
outreach tools of the entire orchestral world and the entire kind of live performance industry. The Pops message for 130 years has been: Music and these opportunities belong to everyone. Don’t get me started on the attempts by the administration and Congress to slash the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Those are total, red herring, false things, but what they are pretending is that these are perks for the entitled, when in reality the only things those rather miniscule budget numbers support is outreach to make sure that this music is for everybody. The only things that will close up for the NEA going away are arts initiatives that take place in the most remote and poorest sections of this country. At the end of the day, the amount of money spent by the U.S. government on arts support is less than a postage stamp per tax paying American.

What $15 million buys in Boston’s most exclusive neighborhood Live on the city’s last private park — but it’ll cost you. JACKIE KOLGRAF @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
The rare opportunity to live in one of Boston’s most elite squares just came up — but you’ll need a cool $15 million to make that dream a reality. Louisburg Square, located in the Beacon Hill neighborhood, came to
be in 1826 and sits between Mount Vernon and Pinckney streets. It’s famous for the narrow park that runs down the middle, enclosed by a wrought iron fence and ringed with Greek Revival-style row houses with a mixture of bowed and flat facades, some of the city’s most expensive real estate. The last private park in Boston, it features a notable statue at either end: one of Christopher Columbus and one of Aristides the Just, both believed to
have been donated in the 1850s. Property rarely turns over in the square, which some of the most notable names in Boston call home, including former Secretary of State John Kerry. Historic Louisburg Square residents include portrait painter John Singleton Copley, Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind and “Little Women” author Louisa May Alcott. Just listed, 85 Pinckney St. is the picture of Beacon Hill living, with a classic brick facade,
black shutters and overflowing window boxes. The 7,000 square foot space sits at the very top of Louisburg Square and is on the market for $14,950,000. It hasn’t been for sale since 1997, when it sold for just under $5 million. The property offers the quintessential turnof-the-century brownstone package: sky-high ceilings with crown molding, detailed builtins, handsome wood paneling, curving staircases (or you could take your
private elevator), chandeliers hanging from ceiling medallions and a two-tiered roof deck with panoramic views of the city. Five bedrooms and seven bathrooms mean you and your whole family will be comfortable, but be sure to reserve the top floor bedroom with a clear view of the John Hancock Tower for yourself. Although, after paying $15 million, you still might want to invest in more modern window treatments. It seems no
space is perfect. Most homes in Louisburg Square haven’t been on the market since the ’90s, so you’d be a fool to let this opportunity pass. If you’re worried about that mortgage payment, Zillow estimates you could get about $42,000 a month in rent. But if $15 million is in your budget, get ready to gaze out your windows at the picturesque square, step out onto true Boston cobblestones and wave to your neighbor, John Kerry.

Things to watch for in Celtics vs. Wizards Game 5 tonight
The series is tied, 2-2, with Game 5 in Boston tonight. JAMES TOSCANO @Jimmy_Toscano sports@metro.us
Through the first four games of the second round between the Celtics and Wizards, the impression is that this series is going seven. Of course, there weren’t a ton of Celtics fans feeling that way after Isaiah Thomas poured in 53 points in an inspiring Game 2 win that put the Celtics up 2-0 last week. But then the C’s headed for our nation’s capital, and let’s just say for the first time in a while the real ugliness in D.C. came outside of the political sphere and inside the Wizards’ Verizon Center, where the Celtics were embarrassed on two separate occasions. We should have seen it coming. The Wizards are an exceptional home team, finishing the regular season 30-11 at home which included a 17-game home winning streak. They won all three home games against the Hawks in the first round, and have easily handled the Celtics in two there so far. The Wizards went on a 22-0 run in Game 3 and a 26-0 run in Game 4 ... not ideal. Boston will have to go back to D.C. for Game 6, and if recent history is any indication, it’s in their best interest to win tonight’s Game 5 at the TD Garden (8 p.m., TNT).
the 1Stop Bleeding
They say basketball is a game of runs, and if that’s the case it makes sense why Boston has dropped the last two games. As mentioned above, the 22-0 and 26-0 runs, respectively, are unheard of in the playoffs. Even more concerning is how those runs came about — with turnovers. A whopping 19 of the Wizards’ 26 straight points in Game 4 came off of Celtics turnovers in the third quarter.
Isaiah Thomas’ 53-point Game 2 against the Wizards seems like a decade ago. GETTY IMAGES
Oubre to return for Wizards It’s unlikely that there will be a Kelly vs. Kelly sequel. Washington’s Kelly Oubre Jr. was suspended for Game 4 after shoving the Celtics’ Kelly Olynyk to the ground in Game 3, and will likely be on his best behavior when he returns for the Wizards tonight. Oubre is a key player off the Wizards’ bench as he had 12 points in both Games 1 and 2 of the series.
One recurring theme in this series is when things start to go bad for Boston, they get much worse before they get better (if they even do get better). Brad Stevens needs to be quicker to call timeouts and quicker to make substitutions in these instances. The Wizards ended up with 34 points off Celtics turnovers in Game 4.
2
C’s fears coming true
Isaiah Thomas’ 53 points feels like a long time ago, doesn’t it? The Celtics point guard has failed to score over 20 points in each of the last two
games, which marks the first time all season that’s happened. The Wizards are focusing much more on preventing Thomas from getting clean looks - and even from getting the ball. Unfortunately for Boston, there hasn’t been another player to make up for the loss of Thomas’ production when he’s doubled. Avery Bradley has suffered yet another hip pointer injury, Marcus Smart can’t seem to get out of his own way, and Jae Crowder looks like he’s lost a step.
for 3Time a change?
All playoffs, Brad Stevens has been going back and forth between Amir Johnson and Gerald Green in the starting lineup. He saw some success with Green early on, but that’s about it between the two. It may be time for Stevens to make some bigger changes. Why hasn’t rookie Jaylen Brown, a player who was in the rotation for big parts of the regular seasons, been given more meaningful minutes in the playoffs? You may get the occasional rookie mistake from Brown, but playing him can’t hurt at this point.

Aries Be creative. Taking the time to do something special for a loved one will be appreciated. A unique relationship will evolve if you discuss your needs.
Libra A money matter will fare far better if you separate your feelings from the process. Investing in your surroundings must be done with intelligence, not your emotions.
Taurus Offer to help someone in need and make a point to be mindful of others. How you relate to others will determine how successful you are and the progress you’ll make.
Scorpio Handle relationship issues swiftly. Be open to discussion of what needs to be done to make things better. Offer suggestions and put your plans in motion.
Gemini Your emotions will play tricks on you. Be careful not to react too quickly if someone does something suspicious. Gather evidence before you point fingers.
Sagittarius Keep personal information a secret by keeping your feelings, financial concerns or health issues to yourself. Personal changes look promising.
Cancer An unusual development with someone close to you will require attention. Taking the lead and making a physical gesture will help keep the peace.
Capricorn Your ideas may appear unorthodox to some, but once developed, they will come across as genius. Spend time working out the details in the privacy of your home.
Leo Don’t fight the impossible. You have more going your way than you realize. Speak up and compromise to get what you want. Travel is encouraged.
Aquarius Deal with matters concerning institutions diplomatically. Use your ingenuity to come up with a plan that will not result in ramifications affecting others.
Virgo You’ll convince others to see things your way. Attending a business meeting or taking a course that will add to your skills or knowledge will bring good results.
Pisces An idea you have can be taken to the next level. Call in favors if it will help you move forward faster. An unexpected encounter will turn into a joint venture. EUGENIA LAST
