OUSTER OF COMEY TESTS GRADUATES TURN BACKS REPORTER JAILED AFTER NEW JUSTICE APPOINTEE IN PROTEST ON DEVOS QUESTIONING TOM PRICE

The newly appointed second-in-command at the U.S. Justice Department faced a weighty task just two weeks after taking office - writing the rationale for firing FBI Director James Comey. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein argued the case for Comey’s sacking in a three-page memo to Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday. President Donald Trump acted swiftly to dismiss

the director later that day. Rosenstein cited Comey’s controversial public statements about the bureau’s investigation into Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of state. REUTERS

CUBA IS BIG OPPORTUNITY FOR TRAVEL COMPANIES

5

Cuba represents a “huge” but challenging opportunity for U.S. cruise, airline and hotel companies as American visitors to the Caribbean island could increase as much as sevenfold by 2025, according to a report by the Boston Consulting Group. As many as two million Americans could visit, up from 285,000 last year, excluding Cuban Americans, the BCG study published on Wednesday estimated.

Given tourism infrastructure is already creaking, that means there are business opportunities aplenty but U.S companies must learn to navigate a centrallyplanned economy with its quirks. U.S. travel to Cuba has already surged, albeit from very low levels, in the last two years since the former Cold War allies announced a detente and the Obama administration eased travel restrictions to the island. Graduating seniors at Bethune-Cookman University in Florida turned their backs in protest of U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos at the start of her commencement speech at the historically black institution. Boos and jeers could be heard as DeVos, who drew ire in February when she said historically black colleges were “pioneers” of educational choice, was introduced. Faculty and school administrators

on stage stood and applauded. Live video of the ceremony in Daytona Beach showed many graduates facing away from DeVos, though it was not clear how many of the approximately 300 seniors participated in the silent protest. “One of the hallmarks of higher education and of democracy is the ability to converse with and learn from those with whom we disagree,” DeVos told the graduates. A West Virginia journalist was arrested and jailed after following U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price down a hallway in the state’s capitol building and peppering him with questions about healthcare policy, the reporter said. Journalist Dan Heyman was grabbed by security and handcuffed after repeatedly calling out a question to Price as the health secretary visited the Charleston

legislature with White House advisor Kellyanne Conway on Tuesday, Heyman said at a press conference after the incident. “I’m not sure why, but at some point I think they decided I was just too persistent in asking this question and trying to do my job, so they arrested me,” said Heyman, who works for Public News Service. MIT students gear up for ‘Star Wars’-themed robot competition “May the Torque Be with You” puts student-made robots to the test. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT

Whether or not they’re “Star Wars” fans, undergrads in MIT’s Department of Mechanical Engineering are hoping the Force is with them as they gear up for the school’s annual robot competition. Undergrads in a design and manufacturing engineering class will put their homemade robots to the test on Thursday. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see a machine that you’ve spent all semester on come to life,” said Tom Frejowski, the current topseeded student in Thursday’s 2.007 Robot Competition, dubbed “May the Torque Be With You.” “Having a functioning robot fills me with a lot of pride,” he said, “but that

pride is definitely paired with a healthy amount of humility because I know exactly what can go wrong and how my robot can fail, and I’m aware of all of the challenges that I had to address.” This year’s competition for undergrads in a design and manufacturing engineering class is “Star Wars”-themed, so the competition field will feature a 3-D model X-Wing with an 11-foot wingspan and four jet engines. The students’ robots are challenged to move to the engines and spin them. The engines are weighted, so they require a lot of torque to get them to spin. Students earn points for how much en-

ergy their robots put on the engine and the rotation speed they reach, but Frejowski said the experience working with robots is more exciting than the competition aspect. “This class is something that the majority of mechanical engineering students look forward to,” Frejowski said. “Things like making a robot that performs only one task really well, or having a robot that does something on the board that nobody else focused on, are as important as scoring points.” For many of the 165 students in the class, most of whom are sophomores, this is likely the first robot they’ve ever built, said MIT professor Amos Win-

ter, who co-leads the class. In four years teaching the course, he is always surprised by what the students build, he said. “Every year, we get crazy, cool, creative insights that the students come up with and awesome robots they build that we would have never anticipated,” he said. The 2.007 Robot Competition was started more than 40 years ago by MIT professor emeritus Wood-

ie Flowers. He doesn’t teach the course anymore, but he’ll be present at this year’s competition to give an “inspiring engineering lecture” alongside Segway inventor Dean Kamen. While the competition has changed a bit since the ’70s — a new theme each year brings a new competition field and challenges for the studentmade robots to complete, and students now have more high-tech tools to

work with — the core mission has stayed the same. “The motto of MIT is ‘Mens et Manus’: Mind and Hand,” he said. “This class ties into that, because in lecture and written homework, students are learning engineering theory — how to size motors, how to use fasteners like screws and bolts — but then they have to turn around and literally apply it to a robot downstairs in our lab.”

Bicyclist Rick Archer died May 2 from injuries he sustained in a hit-and-run crash. ALL IMAGES COURTESY FACEBOOK

Man charged in hit-and-run that killed Boston cyclist The 25-year-old suspect is expected to be arraigned Wednesday. ERIN TIERNAN

A Boston Municipal Court Judge ordered the suspect in an April 30 hit-and-run that killed a 29-year-old South Boston bicyclist be help without bail on Wednesday. At the request of Assistant District Attorney Benjamin Megrian, Malone Kidanemariam, 25, of Boston was ordered held on $25,000 bail. He returns to court June 1. Kidanemariam is charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death. Cyclist Richard Archer died from injuries sustained in the crash on May 2. Archer was hit at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Clarendon Street on April 30. He was taken off life support and died on May 2 from injuries sustained in the crash. “I want to commend my investigators for all of their hard work and long hours in making this arrest,” Police Commissioner William Evans said in a statement. “I also want to thank all the community members who provided help and made calls to our anonymous tip line.” Police allege Kidanemariam fled the scene after striking Archer at 3:19 a.m. Police combed through tips and videosurveillance footage to identify a silver sedan with New York license

plates that was involved in the crash. A tip from a Boston Common parking garage security guard led police to find a vehicle with heavy front-end damage and a smashed windshield, which matched the description from police and turned out to be Kidanemariam’s vehicle. Friends and family remembered Archer as a man with a kind soul and an adventurous spirit. “My amazing brother Rick Archer has touched the lives of people around the world. My brother was a selfless hero who did everything he could for his friends,” his sister Desiree Steele wrote on Facebook the day after the crash. Archer was the first cyclist killed on Boston streets in more than a year, but the third to die in Massachusetts in 2017, according to the Massachusetts Vision Zero Coalition. Local cycling advocates will memorialize Archer with a ghost bike at the scene of the crash, according to Andrew McFarland of LivableStreets Alliance. A ceremony in honor of Archer will take place Wednesday, May 10 at 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Clarendon Street.

Aaron Hernandez’s lawyers said they are in discussions with the late NFL star’s ex-agents following a Massachusetts’ court ruling to vacate his murder conviction on Tuesday. Hernandez, who was convicted in 2015 for the murder of semipro football player Odin Lloyd, hanged himself in his jail cell in a Massachusetts maximumsecurity prison on April 10. Because Hernandez died before his automatic appeals could be exhausted, his convictions for the murder and two lesser gun charges were vacated due to a littleknown state law known as the “Abatement Doctrine.â€? Jose Baez, Hernandez’s lawyer, told TMZ he wasn’t sure how the abatement would affect Hernandez’s contract or NFL pension. “How the NFL treats him from this point forward remains to be seen. We’re in discussions with his agents to see where he stands,â€? he said to TMZ Tuesday. Baez said the Hernandez family had no immediate plans to go after pay and bonuses from the $40 million contract Hernandez had with the Patriots at the time of his arrest in 2013, but said they were “certainly willing and capable of doing thatâ€? should the time come. Baez also dismissed rumors that Hernandez had committed suicide for financial gain for his family. “I have no indication from any conversations with Aaron or any conversation anyone has

had with Aaron that we’ve investigated that makes that true,â€? he said. “I think that’s such a long shot of a theory that I don’t give it any shred of credibility at this point.â€? Hernandez’s suicide came less than a week after he was acquitted of a separate 2012 double murder, and reports speculated the ex-NFL star could have been trying to exploit Massachusetts laws to earn innocence after his death and secure financial stability for his 4-year-old daughter and fiancĂŠe. In a letter left for his fiancĂŠe, Shyanna Jenkins Hernandez, Hernandez said she was “rich.â€? Recent court filings have indicated Hernandez’s estate is broke. Jenkins Hernandez has been largely silent since her fiancÊ’s death, but she will break that silence next week in an appearance on “Dr. Phil.â€? In the two-part episode that will run Monday, May 15, and Tuesday, May 16, Dr. Phil McGraw will address the circumstances surrounding Hernandez’s suicide. “Did he kill himself so that you could collect $6.5 million?â€? McGraw asks, according to a statement released Wednesday by the daytime talk show. It’s unclear from the statement where McGraw came up with the $6.5 million figure or what Jenkins Hernandez’s direct answer is. But according to the release on the yet-to-be-aired episode, she does say, â€œI felt like we were looking so bright. We were going up a ladder to a positive direction.â€?Â

Is Donald Trump lying about being good at golf? Several claims of Donald Trump cheating at golf suggest he might be exaggerating a bit. EVAN MACY

ary, told reporters that he is “pretty good” for his age. A 2.8 index is pretty good for anyone. Deciphering the information available, Trump has posted nine rounds above 80 over his last 20 posted scores — a little much for a low single-digit handicapper. Golf Digest writer Jamie Diaz played a round with Trump three years ago and was a bit suspect of his swing. Diaz writes that Trump drove the ball around 230 yards due to a steep backswing that was better suited for iron play. His iron-striking was, to Diaz’s eye, pretty solid and his short game “servicable.” Trump himself told Diaz: “I think of golf as a very natural game. I

gul — and imagining he took a few “gimmies” or “mulligans.” Rock star Alice Cooper all but came out and said Trump was the biggest cheater he’s ever played golf with, and Sports Illustrated writer Rick Reilly saw quite a few liberties taken by the president.

his first 100 days (Obama played just once in that timeframe). Just how good is Trump on the links? The reports are mixed. According to a spotty, not regularly updated entry in the USGA’s handicap tracker, Trump boasts a 2.8 index, by far the best of any president. He also claims to have 19 club championships under his belt — one of which, according to the Washington Post, was won before his club even opened in 1999. Another uncorroborated claim is his amateur course record at Mar-a-Lago, a 66. At 70 years old, he’s been playing for a long time. Rory McIlroy, who joined the president for a golf round in Febru-

In 1994, former North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Il claimed that he shot a (by far) record of 38-under par, a score of 34 on a par 72 — witnessed by 17 bodyguards. In that incredible supposed performance, he was said to have made five holes-inone in the round, also a record. Golf has long been a hobby for world leaders. In the U.S. alone, 19 presidents have taken up golf, the best among them John F. Kennedy, Dwight D. Eisenhower and George W. Bush. FBI Director James Comey sought to expand his agency’s probe into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election days before President Donald Trump fired him Tuesday, a congressional source said Wednesday. With the Republican president facing a storm of criticism from many Democrats and some lawmakers in his own party, the Trump administration accused Comey of “atrocities” on the job and denied his firing was related to the FBI investigation into the Trump 2016 presidential campaign’s possible collusion with Moscow to sway the election. Democrats intensified accusations on Wednesday that Comey’s removal was intended to undermine the FBI probe and demanded an independent investigation. Some of Trump’s fellow Republicans called the action troubling. Trump, who met Russia’s foreign minister at the White House on Wednesday, defended his abrupt firing of

Comey from a law-enforcement post he had held since 2013, saying he had not been doing a good job. The president had been considering letting Comey go “since the day he was elected,” Deputy White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told a news briefing. She said he acted in part after Attorney General Jeff Sessions and deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein this week “outlined the basic, just, atrocities in circumventing the chain of command in the Department of Justice” that she said Comey had committed. A congressional source with knowledge of the matter said Comey told lawmakers within the past few days that he had asked the Justice Department for more funding for the Russia probe. Comey informed lawmakers of that request after the Senate intelligence committee had asked the FBI to speed up its Russia inquiry, the source said.

“We know that there are subpoenas being requested in the Eastern District of Virginia, and that this investigation has been going on.” Feinstein told reporters

Democrat Dianne Feinstein, the leading Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, told reporters she understood that Comey was seeking more resources for the FBI investigation. She said she met with Comey on March 15 along with Republican Senator Chuck Grassley. At the time Comey said it was “a big counter-intelligence and criminal investigation,” Feinstein said.

Who you gonna call? Dinosaur named for ‘Ghostbusters’ beast Zuul The dinosaur’s name was inspired by its skull similarities to the head of the “Ghostbusters” monster, Royal Ontario Museum paleontologist David Evans said. REUTERS

It was more of a leg buster, but scientists have named a spiky, tanklike dinosaur that wielded a sledge-hammer tail after the fanciful beast Zuul from the blockbuster film “Ghostbusters” that menaced Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and friends. The scientists on Tuesday described fossils unearthed in the northern Montana badlands of the four-legged, plant-eating dinosaur called Zuul crurivastator that was about 20 feet long, weighed 2-1/2 tons and lived 75 million years ago. Zuul belonged to a group of Cretaceous Period dinosaurs called ankylosaurs that were among the most heavily armored land animals ever. They were clad in bony armor from the snout to the end of the tail, often with spikes and a tail club that could be used to smash the legs of predators like the Tyrannosaurus rex cousin Gorgosaurus that lived alongside Zuul. Zuul is one of the most complete and bestpreserved ankylosaurs ever found, including rare soft tissue, paleontologist Victoria Arbour of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto said. Its fossils included skin impressions and keratinous sheaths on the tail spikes. In the 1984 movie, Zuul (pronounced ZOOL) was described as an ancient Near East demigod and appeared as a big,

horned, vaguely doglike monster with glowing red eyes, possessing Sigourney Weaver’s body. “The skull of the new dinosaur has a short, rounded snout, gnarly forehead and two sets of horns projecting backwards from behind the eyes, just like Zuul,” Evans said. Aykroyd, the Ontarioborn “Ghostbusters” star

and co-writer, appeared in a video released by the museum alongside the dinosaur’s skull, holding a photo of the movie beast. “We’re so honored that the Royal Ontario Museum would accord the name of this magnificent creature with the appellation that we called our ‘terror dog’ in the movie, and that is Zuul, Z-U-U-L,” Aykroyd said. Early humans co-existed in Africa with humanlike species 300,000 years ago The dinosaur’s tail, about 10 feet long, was an intimidating defensive weapon. “The menacing, spiked tail of Zuul is by far the coolest part of the animal,” Evans said. “It has a wicked series of large spikes at the base of the tail, then a series of elongated, peaked spines that run the length of the tail club, and it ends in a massive, expanded club.” The research was published in the journal Royal Society Open Science.

It’s been nearly two decades since J.K. Rowling first introduced us to the world of witchcraft and wizardry, but thanks to the neverending output of films, spin-offs, plays and more, “Harry Potter” mania is still as fervent as ever. Although muggles can’t get doctorates in potions from Hogwarts (or its Massachusetts equivalent, Ilver-

Unlike your typical fan convention, this event puts an adult twist on Potterhead celebrations. Launched in 2013, PotterCon is the brainchild of “Harry Potter” super fan Margaret Kaminski, who began the festivities with a handful of friends at a small Brooklyn bar. The event grew into a 300-person rager the following

Dennis Lehane on missing Boston, Megyn Kelly and more The Bay State author breaks down his latest book, “Since We Fell. MATT JUUL

“Gone, Baby, Gone author Dennis Lehane has mastered the art of crafting a story set in the Boston area. However, for his upcoming 14th novel, “Since We Fell, the acclaimed writer is trying something a little different. In Lehane’s latest thriller, which hits shelves this week, the Bay State native dives into the mind of a female lead protagonist for the first time with Rachel Childs, a former journalist who lives in seclusion following an on-air breakdown. Rachel ends up slipping down a psychological rabbit hole when she starts to investigate the mysterious life of her too-good-to-be-true husband. Before his book tour stops at the Brattle Theatre on May 15, we

caught up with Lehane to get his thoughts on coming back to Boston and how Megyn Kelly inspired a character in his new book. You must be thrilled that there’s a Boston stop for your book tour. I’m very excited. It’s a little bit of a dubious excitement because whenever I go back, it reinforces how much I’d rather be there. A bit of a paradox there. Does any part of Boston in particular inspire you the most? I think that every single book that I’ve written is, in some ways, there’s sort of a love letter to a section of the city, depending on which book it is. For example, “Shut-

It started off with a very simple idea: I wanted to do a Hitchcock. That was it. And then it was, “What’s going to be the phobia? or “What’s going to be the dysfunction? And then I came up with agoraphobia. I’ve been long interested in agoraphobia in a generalized sense. And then it somehow went immediately to a woman. I didn’t even think of a guy. It just immediately went to a woman and

Rachel, the lead character, has a complicated relationship with her mother, Elizabeth. How does that inform her actions in the book? It’s everything. Her mother casts a shadow that goes throughout the book, and yet she’s dead, I think, on page 6. She was just one of those characters that just popped. I didn’t mean for her to, again she dies on page 6, but this idea of a woman who withheld knowledge of paternity from her child, it just seemed like such an awful, awful thing. I write about violence, obviously, but what I don’t think that sometimes gets noticed, because I write about physical violence, is how much I write about psychological violence. This is where I completely took the cuffs off.

Did you base Elizabeth o of a speciďŹ c person? No one in particular inspired. But physically, the only thing I knew was at one point, “Huh, wow, I’m channeling Megyn Kelly.â€? If you go back through the book and you look at the descriptions of her physically, it’s her. I remember, I was all of a sudden in the middle of it, and was like, “Who’s in my head here?â€? And then I realized, “Oh, you’re doing Megyn Kelly.â€? Just for looks, not talking about the person. It was all of a sudden just that woman who’s completely put together and completely comfortable in her own skin.

Franklin sisters beat out the competition for ‘Annie’ How these Mass. siblings landed roles in the hit musical. MATT JUUL

The Wylie sisters are ready for their Bay State homecoming. PROVIDED

Recess is usually the top priority on the minds of most middle schoolers, but not for this motivated Massachusetts family. Meet Franklin natives Katie and Amanda Wylie, a pair of up-and-coming performers who beat out hundreds of young girls to land roles as orphans in the national tour for “Annie, which kicks off its run at the Boch Center’s Wang Theatre this week. The sisters, ages 9 and 13, accompanied by their mother Kristen, have spent the last several months traveling across the country to perform the famed musical at nearly two hundred shows in more than 80 cities. “We saw these beautiful things that you’d never see, but for us it was almost a family trip, Kristen says. “We just had this

large group of other people on the bus with us. The Franklin School of the Performing Arts students earned their spots on the tour after an unexpected audition came up during their trip to New York City for the Broadway Artist Alliance, a program that allows kids to learn from actual Broadway actors. “I play Tessie. I’m the cry baby of the group, says Amanda, who’s in seventh grade. “We’re just so excited to be here because there’s seven orphans and about a couple hundred girls auditioned. “I am Duffy and I like to think of her as the confused one, adds Katie, who’s in third grade. “She has mixed emotions and it’s very fun to play her because you get to be mad and happy at the

same time. While balancing performing and online schoolwork with a hectic travel schedule may be tough, things usually turn out smoothly thanks to the sisters’ supermom. Besides being a mother of two, Kristen also wears the hats of a teacher and a 24/7 chaperone, plus she still works full-time as the product marketing director for Kronos, a Chelmsford-based software company. It may get a bit crazy at times, but she’s always able to fit her work schedule around her duties as a

traveling mom. Kristen credits Kronos for giving her family the opportunity to pursue this once-in-a-lifetime acting endeavor. “If more organizations could give parents that time, I think it would be easier for both moms and dads to have that balance, Kristen says. “My company is the only reason why our family was able to have this opportunity, because if they said, ‘Sorry, you need to be in the office,’ then I would have to look my kids in the eyes and say, ‘I’m sorry that you earned this amazing opportunity, but our family can’t pursue it.’ She adds, “If more people could do that, if more companies could do that, I think a lot more people would be a lot more productive.

Bringing down the house at Together The eighth annual music, art and tech fest kicks off this weekend. LINDA CLARKE

This year’s Together Festival, a weeklong music, art and technology celebration, honors techno and house music’s American roots with a lineup that’s heavy in homegrown talent, including headliner and East Coast DJ-producer Kerri Chandler. “We’ve programmed tons of European artists over the years, but this year we’re bringing it back home, says Together’s co-founder Alex Maniatis. Though dance based,

Maniatis points out Together is not a mainstream electronic dance music festival. “There is no EDM culture in this festival, it’s rooted in the underground, says Maniatis, a longtime music industry insider who co-ran local indie Dopamine Records before co-founding MMMMaven in 2011. The Cambridge-based outfit evolved into an education project as well as an event production company, and still books the Middlesex Lounge’s longrunning weekly club night, Make It New. “It’s easy booking a festival full of top-10 Beatport artists or whatever, the North Shore

native says. “Together is hypercurated and not about booking big names and throwing a lot of people in a field. Nowadays, Together ranks in the top-10 U.S. DJ/tech focused festivals, standing alongside notables like Movement in Detroit, Mutek in Montreal and Three Points in Miami. Though the music side takes center stage, art and technology come into play via displays and workshops, plus technology demonstrations. At the heart of it all, though, is community. “We want to keep people off their phones and have them enjoy each other, says Maniatis.

Boston native Eric Lu began studying piano at age 6, and at age 19 he’s already performed at Carnegie Hall, Beijing Concert Hall and the Chopin Festival in Poland, among many other impressive gigs. Contrary to the stereotype of child prodigies as robotic and uncreative, Lu has been praised precisely for a gripping emotional power. Saturday night’s program includes Chopin, Mozart, Schubert and Prokofiev. May 13, 8 p.m. Jordan Hall, 30 Gainsborough St., Boston $15-$50, chineseperformingarts.net

Savoy Motel This Nashville band is a bona fide supergroup, the cream of the punk and garage rock crop in a city best known for its country music scene. In this project, however, they sound like an edgy, minimalist post-punk band attempting, with intriguing success, to play ’70s soul and glam rock, cultivating a suitably (and comically) ’70s appearance in their photos and music videos. Zeitgeist Stage Company presents six tales from Tennessee Williams, adapted for the stage by contemporary playwrights Elizabeth Egloff, Marcus Gardely, Rebecca Gilman, David Grimm, John Guare and Beth Henley. “How to Be a Rock Critic” There’s no mistaking the meandering, impassioned, beat/gonzo journalistic style of Lester Bangs, a singular talent in the annals of rock criticism. In this one-man show, Erik Jenzen plays the legendary writer, who waged a war against overblown arena trash and disco drivel throughout the ’70s, all while living like a rock star himself — a tendency that brought him to an early grave. John Cena and Aaron Taylor-Johnson play soldiers pinned down by a sniper in “The Wall, in theaters Friday. DAVID JAMES

The West Newbury native talks about going serious with the war thriller “The Wall. MATT PRIGGE

John Cena is still a wrestler, he’s just doing less of it these days. What he really wants to do is act. Over the last few years, the 39-year-old has taken on smaller roles. Many of these have a comedic bent — remember when he and his bizarrely ripped bod stole bits of “Trainwreck? “The Wall, on the other hand, is not funny. An intense and stripped-down thriller, it finds two soldiers (Cena and Aaron Taylor-Johnson) battling a sniper in a remote part of Iraq just after the war has ended. Cena actually spends most of the film wounded and passed out, while

Taylor-Johnson tries to stay alive. Not that he minded letting someone else get the spotlight. Your role is very small: You spend almost the entire movie comatose on the ground. It might even be your leastactive movie performance. [Laughs] Trust me, I have a sense of humor about it. People have been saying, “Hey, man, you were on the ground a lot! I totally get it. But that’s what it called for. Sometimes it’s not the number of pages or minutes of screen time. It’s just being part of a good story. You have been quietly creeping back into movies, taking small roles here and in “Trainwreck and “Daddy’s Home, plus a leading role in the forthcoming “The

Pact. You have said you’re trying to wrestle less, act more. I would do both at the same time, but the movie guys are a little weird with their insurance. They don’t want me to go smashing my face up. [Laughs] I’m excited for all the opportunities outside the WWE ring, only because it raises awareness of the WWE. I take great pride in my profession, but I’m very aware of the perception of it. I think a lot of people think we are just what we are, and that’s it. There’s nothing wrong with that. But there are plenty of talented people who travel with the WWE and produce wonderful entertainment every week. We do live sports entertainment, and it’s like no other. To be able to do stuff like this outside of the norm and for people to

say, “Wow, that’s pretty good,” that bodes well for getting more eyes on the ring. I get the sense that people are respecting wrestling more and more these days. More and more. And a lot of our methods of entertainment are being adopted by both mainstream sports and mainstream entertainment. If you look at how ESPN has shifted its content, the way shows feature a lot of argumentative debate rather than informative sports reporting, then sports borrows a lot from the WWE. I’m very happy to see it, and I think that’s what leading to more understanding of

I’d say it’s not just sports that’s borrowed from wrestling. Every political show is people yelling at each other now, like every pundit is a wrestler. Then there’s that, too. That’s nothing more than me challenging a guy to a steel cage match. Before, everyone pointed the finger at the way we tell stories, and now they’ve Xeroxed our playbook.

If you watch Netflix’s “Master of None,” you know Aziz Ansari and Eric Wareheim’s onscreen rapport is pretty darn charming. In the comedy series co-created by Ansari and Alan Yang (“Parks and Rec”), Ansari and Wareheim play Dev and Arnold, 30-something besties living in Brooklyn. They call each other “Big Bud” and “Lil Bud” and pass the time making up goofy songs and talk-

ing about girls — always while getting down on some serious grub (season one showed them noshing at The Commodore, Mission Chinese, Taco Morelos food truck, among other NYC hotspots). It’s not so different from how they interact in real life, Wareheim tells us. “All that silly stuff, dancing around and singing — we really do that,” he says, on a call

from L.A. “We’re very goofy together. We overanalyze emojis. But at the same time we’re doing it laughing, because we’re not that ridiculous.” Um, but aren’t they, though? The 41-year-old comedian tells us that a lot of inspiration for “Master of None” season two, out Friday, comes from Aziz and Eric’s real-life antics. This season opens with Dev in Italy, where he’s taking

time out from a stalled relationship and career to focus on his true passion: learning to make perfect pasta. Naturally, Arnie — whom Aziz has referred to as Dev’s “token white friend” next to buds Denise (Lena Waithe), and Brian (Kelvin Yu) — comes to visit. “Last year, before the show, we traveled to Europe for a couple months together, got in some trouble, talked

In one scene, the two get their Volvo stuck in a narrow alley in Sicily. That really happened; all you have to do is look at Ansari’s Instagram for proof. In the show it’s mined for laughs — Arnold gets stuck in the sun roof, panicking like a man-sized baby while Dev can’t help but video the amusing debacle on his phone. It played out the same way in real life: Wareheim says it was really scary, but of course, Ansari still recorded it. Wareheim, who’s also a supervising producer on the show, says it’s not uncommon for their scenes together to come out of improvised sessions. “A couple days before the shoot, we’ll just get together in our hotel room and

What’s next for Wareheim Beyond “Master of None,â€? real life Big Bud has a lot coming up. This summer, he’ll go on tour for the 10th anniversary of “Tim and Eric Awesome Show,â€? the bizarre sketch series on Adult Swim he created and stars in alongside comedian Tim Heidecker. “The [live] show’s fun, but only if you like our stu. Otherwise, don’t come,â€? he jokes. He’s also in the middle of production on the second season of “Tim and Eric’s Bedtime Stories,â€? his and Heidecker’s nightmare horror comedy series, also on Adult Swim. “We’re going pretty extreme on this one, it’s a very, very dark comedy,â€? he says. They worked with a “dream cast,â€? including Ray Wise (Leland Palmer on “Twin Peaksâ€?) and Rhea Pearlman (“Cheersâ€?) who play a creepy duo in one episode. He describes it: “Imagine if you had a wife and something happened that you weren’t married to her anymore, and she was actually your mom. That’s a nightmare.â€? Speaking of “Twin Peaks,â€? Wareheim is psyched for the revival. “I just rewatched ‘Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me’ to get stoked,â€? he says. “I’ve watched it a million times, [David Lynch] is such a big inspiration for me.â€? One question we wish we asked: If he and Lil Bud tune in together, what will they order for din-din?

drink some wine and throw away the script, and just talk to each other about what’s happening, and Aziz would record it on his phone and listen back to it and rewrite the script, he explains. The two ate very well on their European adventure together, as they do onscreen. Wareheim’s favorite meal in Italy? “If I had to boil it down to one bite, it would be the tortellini from Osteria Francescana in Modena, that crazy No. 1 restaurant in the world. They make this tortellini in a Parmesan cream sauce, it’s crazy. ... It’s very old school, nothing fancy, just symbolizes that region [Modena]. Apparently their minds are always in their bellies. “Whenever we shoot, we instantly start Yelping what the best food places are in that five-block vicin-

ity for lunch. That’s pretty much what we’re fully focused on, equally as making the show good, he says. An episode Wareheim directed this season, “First Date, is one of our favorites. An experimental feat, it

shows Dev on a series of first dates that literally merge into each other over the course of one night (played by multiple actresses, the woman he’s having a glass of

wine with morphs into someone else over dinner, and then into someone else on the Uber ride home, and so on). The bizarre interactions spurred by dating in the digital age is a recurring topic on the show — as in Ansari’s standup and his book “Modern Romance. Wareheim, a bachelor himself, can relate. “I wanted to make the audience feel like what it is to date on apps, where you’re kind of walking into this blind, like ‘Who are you?’ [situation] and the way to do that was through that rapid fire, quick-cutting, multiple people kind of thing, he explains. “It was very scary to go in shooting that way. It could have sucked, but we really mapped it out and I’m so happy with how it turned out. “Master of None season two airs Friday, May 12 on Netflix.

Canelo vs. Golovkin is the real must-see fight I hear it all the time. “Boxing isn’t what it used to be,” they try to tell me. I don’t necessarily agree, but it’s certainly tough to defend at times, especially after watching Canelo Alvarez spend 12 rounds beating up a seemingly overmatched Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on Saturday, which led to a unanimous-decision win for Canelo in Las Vegas. Canelo is one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world. And if you believe in the importance of lineal championships, then Canelo is your guy in the middleweight division, being the man who beat “the man” back in 2015, when he defeated Miguel Cotto. But not even Golden Boy Promotions can call Canelo’s latest fight an entertaining one. Which is why many with an interest in the fight game are more intrigued

by the thought of Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor. Whether or not that fight ever actually happens remains to be seen. But even without an official announcement, the anticipation for it has been set at a level that can only be described as a “must-see” event. OK, sure. But I’m here to tell you that Mayweather vs McGregor isn’t the fight you should be clamoring for if you’re looking to be entertained when the bell rings. The fight you should actually want to see is Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin on Sept. 16, which was made official immediately after Canelo defeated Chavez

Jr. on Saturday. And as Canelo and Golovkin stood face-to-face in the ring, many of us boxing fans thought to ourselves, “Finally.” The pop culture-, social mediahungry world could care less about Canelo vs. Golovkin. But the build-up to a potential Mayweather/ McGregor fight would be everything that entertainment stands for. From a promotional perspective, that fight has it all. It’s the event that everybody will want to see, even if they’re not necessarily fight fans. Until that fight begins, of course. Canelo vs. Golovkin won’t draw the same interest leading up to Sept. 16. But it probably should. Because it will be the better fight. And it’s not even close. Golovkin is the unified middleweight champion. He’s the indestructible force in boxing that Canelo has been avoiding

at all costs. It’s the fight that the 35-year-old undefeated Golovkin has always wanted, and the fight that the 26-year-old lineal champion Canelo has been seemingly waiting out. Well, after Golovkin was pushed to a 12-round decision for the first time in March — which ended his 23-fight knockout streak — Golden Boy decided the moment was

right. And while Golden Boy will try its best to promote the fight’s epic in-ring value, it just won’t be able to match the hype that Mayweather vs. McGregor would receive. Canelo-Golovkin doesn’t have the same personalities. But it certainly has the more exciting boxers. It’s a battle of two knockout artists going toe-to-toe in a fight that true boxing

fans have been begging to see. I’m not here to tell you that Canelo vs. Golovkin will somehow save the sport. I’m just letting you know that, regardless of the hype level and promotional appeal to the pop-culture world, Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin is the biggest, most-coveted fight that the sport has seen in a very long time.

Don’t worry too much about Betts The MVP candidate is showing signs that he’s ready to bust out. RICH SLATE

The Red Sox (17-15) have had plenty of issues already bubble to the surface in 2017. Third base has been a black hole of mediocrity, their lack of offense along with teamwide power has been troubling, and the bullpen (outside of lights-out closer Craig Kimbrel) has been spotty. Right fielder Mookie Betts (.279 BA, .350 OBP, .441 SLG, 3 HRs and 14 RBIs) has gotten off to a slower start than you’d expect from a guy that finished second in the American League MVP race last season behind Angels superstar Mike Trout. Still, you have to be patient with Betts since the face of Boston’s franchise (that’s not named Chris Sale) is only 24 years old and is playing in only his third full MLB season. With no David Ortiz, it was easy to imagine the negative after-effect that his absence would have on the Red Sox lineup that last year was so potent. Predictably, Betts isn’t the only quality player to scuffle just

ted around twice. Back in his rightful spot leading off, Betts was in the middle of everything as he went 3-for-6 with a solo home run, double

and two runs scored. There are two main reasons that make Betts such a dynamic hitter and frankly one of the top talents in all of baseball when you also include his Gold Glove caliber defense: his plate discipline and speed. In 111 at bats so far in 2017, he’s only struck out nine times. He had a streak from Sept. 12, 2016 to April 19, 2017 of 129 consecutive plate appearances without a strikeout. He’s also fast (four stolen bases, zero caught stealing thus far), which means that he will be able to leg out infield hits that many other players simply cannot do. The rest of May sets up very nicely for the Red Sox to clean up on a bunch of average to really bad opponents. After the Brewers, the Sox host the Rays (16-18) for three games, go to St. Louis (1714) for two games and Oakland (15-17) for four games before hosting the Rangers (13-20) and Mariners (15-17) for three game sets at Fenway.
