OUSTER OF COMEY TESTS GRADUATES TURN BACKS REPORTER JAILED AFTER NEW JUSTICE APPOINTEE IN PROTEST ON DEVOS QUESTIONING TOM PRICE

The newly appointed second-in-command at the U.S. Justice Department faced a weighty task just two weeks after taking office — writing the rationale for firing FBI Director James Comey. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein argued the case for Comey’s sacking in a three-page memo to Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday. President Donald Trump acted swiftly to dismiss
the director later that day. Rosenstein cited Comey’s controversial public statements about the bureau’s investigation into Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of state. REUTERS

Graduating seniors at Bethune-Cookman University in Florida turned their backs in protest of U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos at the start of her commencement speech at the historically black institution. Boos and jeers could be heard as DeVos, who drew ire in February when she said historically black colleges were “pioneers” of educational choice, was introduced. Faculty and school administrators
on stage stood and applauded. Live video of the ceremony in Daytona Beach showed many graduates facing away from DeVos, though it was not clear how many of the approximately 300 seniors participated in the silent protest. “One of the hallmarks of higher education and of democracy is the ability to converse with and learn from those with whom we disagree,” DeVos told the graduates. A West Virginia journalist was arrested and jailed after following U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price down a hallway in the state’s capitol building and peppering him with questions about healthcare policy, the reporter said. Journalist Dan Heyman was grabbed by security and handcuffed after repeatedly calling out a question to Price as the health secretary visited the Charleston
legislature with White House advisor Kellyanne Conway on Tuesday, Heyman said at a press conference after the incident. “I’m not sure why, but at some point I think they decided I was just too persistent in asking this question and trying to do my job, so they arrested me,” said Heyman, who works for Public News Service. CUBA IS BIG OPPORTUNITY FOR TRAVEL COMPANIES
5
Cuba represents a “huge” but challenging opportunity for U.S. cruise, airline and hotel companies as American visitors to the Caribbean island could increase as much as sevenfold by 2025, according to a report by the Boston Consulting Group. As many as two million Americans could visit, up from 285,000 last year, excluding Cuban Americans, the BCG study published on Wednesday estimated.
Given tourism infrastructure is already creaking, that means there are business opportunities aplenty but U.S companies must learn to navigate a centrallyplanned economy with its quirks. U.S. travel to Cuba has already surged, albeit from very low levels, in the last two years since the former Cold War allies announced a detente and the Obama administration eased travel restrictions to the island. Psychedelics saved his life, and now he wants research to prove it Rodrigo Niño wants to help fund research into the benefits of LSD microdosing. ERIN TIERNAN @ErinTiernan

What if psychedelics could cure depression and addiction and help cancer patients deal with their end-of-life anxiety? New York real estate developer Rodrigo Niño is convinced LSD, psilocybin and MDMA can unlock the answers to these ailments. He just needs $2 million to prove it. So to push research forward, Niño launched a crowdfunding campaign “Fundamental” on Tuesday that will get researchers the cash they need to move forward with studies on psychedelic-assist-
ed therapies in mental health and cognition. Why? Because he believes the only reason he is alive today is because of psychedelics. At 41 years old, he was diagnosed with Stage 3 melanoma. Doctors said his chances of survival were slim. Enter his fear of dying. “The whole idea is that we as human beings know that we will eventually die, we just don’t like to know when,” Niño said. “When confronted with that possibility, we get very afraid.” Niño researched the best hospitals and traveled to Boston where he endured two surgeries, but soon he had exhausted his options with modern medicine. So, he turned to traditional medicines and, before he knew it, he was headed to the heart of
the Peruvian rainforest to partake in an ayahuasca ceremony. “As a data guy, a num-
lymphatic cancer. Niño’s melanoma had metastasized to his lymphatic system, and he was desperate for hope. So Niño went to the jungle and participated in four ayahuasca ceremonies over two weeks under the
chiatry at NYU Langone Medical Center, whose study found that, when administered under psychologically supportive, double-blind conditions, a single dose of psilocybin produced rapid, substantial and enduring improvements in cancer-
“My fear of dying was completely gone.” Rodrigo Niño
bers guy, a New Yorker, it sounded kind of out there to me,” Niño admitted. He learned of ayahuasca from National Geographic, which said the psychedelic tea made of plant roots could help with autoimmune diseases and
care of a “curandero” — the Spanish word for medicine man. “My fear of dying was completely gone,” Niñosaid. “And I had to find out if it was a placebo effect caused by the hallucinations, or if in fact, I had been physically and psychologically cured.” Back at home, Niño met Dr. Stephen Ross, director of addiction psy-
related depression, anxiety and existential distress as well as improvements in quality of life. Psilocybin is the sister molecule to ayahuasca, Niño said. It was the proof he was looking for. Fast forward seven years, and as Niño puts it, “I haven’t died yet.” As Niño continued to learn about more and more doctors who are finding
psychedelics help people with mental illness, he recognized a lack of funding was holding research back. It’s nearly impossible to secure grant funding for medical studies into the effects of psychedelics for a variety of reasons — leftover stigma from the 1960s and the antics of the Merry Pranksters, federal scheduling, and because the chemical compounds are in the public domain, they won’t make money for pharmaceutical investors. In his business, Niñohad used crowdfunding as a way to bring in smaller investors on large commercial developments in New York City. “We realized we could extrapolate our learning in that industry to allow family, friends and patients struggling with this to contribute,” Niño said.

Veteran U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officers have been accused of subjecting new recruits to years of sexually aggressive hazing at Newark International Airport, and the Department of Homeland Security is now investigating the allegations. Three officers have filed a lawsuit against DHS, alleging they were subjected to sexually abusive hazing that included being ducttaped to a “rape table” where they were groped and terrorized as the song “Party Boy Song” from the MTV
show “Jackass” played in the background, NBC4 reported. The officers allege the abuse went on for years. “This is terrorizing. How is it that officers believe they’re free to do whatever they want to do?” officer Diana Cifuentes told NBC4. Another of the officers backed up Cifuentes’ claims. “Hazing wouldn’t do this justice. This is complete assault. They take you in a room and your fellow officers are all watching as officers grab you,” officer Vito Degironimo told NBC4. U.S. Customs and Border Patrol did not discuss the details of the allegations, but confirmed that an investigation into the claims by the DHS Office of the Inspector General was ongoing. “We do not toler-
ate corruption or abuse within our ranks, and we cooperate fully with all criminal or administrative investigations of alleged misconduct by any of our personnel, whether it occurs on or off duty,” a CPB spokesman said. The officers said they had been too intimidated to file internal complaints — though one officer eventually did — because the officers involved in the abuse were connected with high-ranking officers. Cifuentes said she hoped public whistleblowing might put an end to the situation. “For this to stop we have to go to the public,” said Cifuentes. “We have to let people know that this is going on. We have to let other branches of the government know that this is going on.”

Lean Deleon speaks at the May Day rally in Union Square shortly before he and 31 others were arrested. He said police treated him “like an animal.” PROVIDED
Arrested May Day protesters denounce NYPD tactics at City Hall “This is the first time I was arrested — ever,” one longtime activist said. NIKKI M. MASCALI @MetroNewYork

When Lean Deleon gathered in Union Square last week to rally for workers’ and immigrants’ rights as part of the global May Day and International Workers’ Day movements, he did not expect to find himself in police custody. “This was the first time I was arrested — ever,” Deleon said. The 28-year-old Jersey City resident, who attended past May Day events and has been an activist since high school, was among the 32 protesters arrested on May 1. Deleon and several other May Day protesters spoke about their arrests and denounced the NYPD’s actions at a rally organized by the May Day Union Square Coalition outside City Hall on Wednesday afternoon. According to the coalition made up of anarchists, anti-fascists and
socialists, the “vast majority of the arrests were made after police forced thousands of marchers onto sidewalks — then arrested those who were jostled into the streets.” While there are always police at protests, “this time around, there was kind of an eerie feeling,” Deleon said. “There was more police everywhere, and they seemed on the verge that something was going to happen.” Deleon was holding a flag for the International League of Peoples’ Struggle when he heard police say, “Grab that person.” “I asked them what they needed, if they wanted me to put my flag down … and they said, ‘No, we’re just going to arrest you,’” he said. Deleon said he was cuffed and detained at the rally for about 30 minutes before being taken to a precinct downtown where he was held for three hours with others. “I was literally there fighting for better lives, better living wages and conditions, and dignified work,” he said. “To be cuffed like that and treat-
ed like an animal about to be slaughtered was really scary. You don’t know what’s going to happen next now that you’re in handcuffs, and you’re immobilized.” Deleon was charged with misconduct and obstruction of traffic. He hopes that “by galvanizing the community and calling attention to these unjust arrests, that our charges will be dropped” before the protesters’ scheduled hearing in June. The May Day Union Square Coalition called for the resignation of NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill and for the department to “stop the criminalization of mostly black and brown bodies and activists that are speaking up” at the rally. “The NYPD’s repression of the rally was characterized by the arrests and violence against migrant workers, and included the targeting of LGBTQ leaders, Black Lives Matter activists and Antifa [antifascist] activists,” Teresa Gutierrez of the coalition said in a statement. Police did not respond to requests for comment.

After judge vacates Aaron Hernandez’s conviction, lawyers talk possible payout Hernandez’s lawyer is “in discussions” with the exNFL star’s former agents. ERIN TIERNAN @ErinTiernan
erin.tiernan@metro.us
Aaron Hernandez’s lawyers said they are in discussions with the late NFL star’s ex-agents following a Massachusetts’ court ruling to vacate his murder conviction on Tuesday. Hernandez, who was convicted in 2015 for the murder of semipro football player Odin Lloyd, hanged himself in his jail cell in a Massachusetts maximum-security prison on April 10. Because Hernandez died before his automatic appeals could be exhausted, his convictions for the murder and two lesser gun charges were vacated due to a little-known state law known as the “Abatement Doctrine.” Jose Baez, Hernandez’s lawyer, told TMZ he wasn’t sure how the abatement would affect Hernandez’s contract or NFL pension. “How the NFL treats him from this point forward remains to be seen. We’re in discussions with his agents to see where he stands,” he said to TMZ Tuesday. Baez said the Hernandez family had no immediate plans to go after pay and bonuses from the $40 million contract Hernandez had with the Patriots at the time of his arrest in 2013, but said they were “certainly willing and capable of doing that” should the time come. Baez also dismissed rumors that Hernandez had committed suicide for financial gain for his
family. “I have no indication from any conversations with Aaron or any conversation anyone has had with Aaron that we’ve investigated that makes that true,” he said. “I think that’s such a long shot of a theory that I don’t give it any shred of credibility at this point.” Hernandez’s suicide came less than a week after he was acquitted of a separate 2012 double murder, and reports speculated the ex-NFL star could have been trying to exploit Massachusetts laws to earn innocence after his death and secure financial stability for his 4-year-old daughter and fiancée. In a letter left for his fiancée, Shyanna Jenkins Hernandez, Hernandez said she was “rich.” Recent court filings have indicated Hernandez’s estate is broke. Jenkins Hernandez has been largely silent since her fiancé’s death, but she will break that silence next week in an appearance on “Dr. Phil.” In the two-part episode that will run Monday, May 15, and Tuesday, May 16, Dr. Phil McGraw will address the circumstances surrounding Hernandez’s suicide. “Did he kill himself so that you could collect $6.5 million?” McGraw asks, according to a statement released Wednesday by the daytime talk show. It’s unclear from the statement where McGraw came up with the $6.5 million figure or what Jenkins Hernandez’s direct answer is. But according to the release on the yet-to-beaired episode, she does say, “I felt like we were looking so bright. We were going up a ladder to a positive direction.”

The suspect charged with the murder of two doctors in their South Boston home once worked at their luxury condo. Bampumim Teixeira, a 30-year-old man from Chelsea, was previously hired by Palladion Services, LLC, which provides concierge and security services, the company said in a statement. Palladion Services, LLC focuses on serving exclusively “high-end properties, according to its website. The company said that it hired Teixeira in October 2015, “after we performed background and reference checks,

which were clean, the company said. Teixeira worked at the property for about three weeks more than a year ago. His employment with Palladion ended in April 2016, the company said. Teixeira is charged with two counts of murder for the killings of Lina Bolanos and Richard Field. Bolanos and Field, both doctors who were engaged, were found with their hands bound and throats slashed at their apartment, which was on the 11th floor of 141 Dorchester Ave. A bag full of jewelry was also found in the apartment. Teixeira was reportedly allowed to enter the apartment by the couple. Police said that there was no information in the investigation connecting Teixeira to Bolanos and Field. “Nor is there currently any evidence to explain
why he would attack them so viciously at their own home, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said at a Monday press conference. A message of “retribution was reportedly written on an apartment wall, though its contents were not disclosed. Teixeira has two larceny convictions on his record, according to the DA’s office, for bank robbery in 2014 and 2016. He was recently released from prison after serving nine months. Field worked at North Shore Pain Management and Bolanos was a pediatric anesthesiologist at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, as well as a teacher at Harvard Medical School. In a statement, Field’s family said that their deaths are “a tragedy beyond measure, the Associated Press reported.

Source: FBI chief aimed to expand Russia probe before Trump fired him The ouster stunned Washington and plunged Trump deeper into a controversy over his campaign’s alleged ties with Russia that has dogged the early days of his presidency. FBI Director James Comey sought to expand his agency’s probe into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election days before President Donald Trump fired him Tuesday, a congressional source said Wednesday. With the Republican president facing a storm of criticism from many Democrats and some lawmakers in his own party, the Trump administration accused Comey

of “atrocities on the job and denied his firing was related to the FBI investigation into the Trump 2016 presidential campaign’s possible collusion with Moscow to sway the election. Democrats intensified accusations on Wednesday that Comey’s removal was intended to undermine the FBI probe and demanded an independent investigation. Some of Trump’s fellow Republicans called the action troubling. Trump, who met Russia’s foreign minister at the White House on Wednesday, defended his abrupt firing of Comey from a law-enforcement post he had held since 2013, saying he had not been doing a good job. cy told ABC News that Comey was told he had been terminated via phone. Additionally, a White House official told Reuters that Comey’s termination letter was delivered to the FBI by Trump’s longtime personal bodyguard Keith Schiller, who is now director of operations for the Oval Office. “While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgment of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the bureau,” Trump wrote Comey in the letter that cited recommendations from Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. “It is essential that we find new leadership for the FBI that restores public trust and confidence in its vital law enforcement mission.” Comey’s dismissal was long predicted by many, as the director is one of the government officials who was investigating Trump and members of his administration for possible ties to Russia. Earlier on Tuesday, a new report indicated that Comey may have misstated the number
of emails Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin had forwarded to her husband, disgraced former New York Rep. Anthony Weiner. He recently testified that those emails numbered in the “hundreds and thousands,” where it now seems it was just a handful of questionable emails, none of which were marked classified. Clinton’s emails, of course, were the subject of a huge FBI investigation, which Comey announced he was reopening just before the election — and which was also re-closed prior to Election Day and followed its original conclusion that Clinton should not be charged for any wrongdoing. It was an incident that many, including the former Democratic candidate herself, felt played a large role in Clinton’s loss to Trump. In a statement after the news of Comey’s firing broke, the White House said that “the FBI is one of our nation’s most cherished and respected institutions and today will mark a new beginning for our crown jewel of law enforcement.” Comey’s deputy director, Andrew McCabe, is acting FBI director until Trump names his replacement.

Senate committee subpoenas former Trump adviser Flynn over Russia The U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee issued a subpoena on Wednesday demanding documents related to Russia from President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn, ramping up its monthslong investigation of Moscow’s alleged meddling in the 2016 U.S. election. In a joint statement, Sens. Richard Burr, the committee’s Republican chairman, and Mark Warner, its top Democrat, said the committee had first requested the documents from Flynn in an April 28 letter, but the retired lieutenant general had declined, through counsel, to cooperate with the committee’s request. Warner said that the committee has been receiving documents as it investigates allegations

that Russia sought to influence the U.S. election, something Moscow denies. But he told Reuters that some people were not complying “so we were going to take next steps.” The Trump administration denies any collusion with Russia. Flynn has been a focus of investigations into Russia and the election. He was forced to resign as Trump’s national
security adviser for failing to disclose the content of his talks with Sergey Kislyak, Russia’s ambassador to the United States, and then misleading Vice President Mike Pence about the conversations. Former Acting U.S. Attorney General Sally Yates testified at a high-profile hearing on Monday that she had warned the White House in January that Flynn had been compromised and could have been vulnerable to blackmail by Russia. The subpoena was announced a day after Trump abruptly fired FBI Director James Comey, who had been leading the bureau’s investigation of Russia and the election. Comey’s firing prompted a storm of criticism from Democrats, who accused the president of seeking to stall the probe. REUTERS

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Wednesday that the state will allow testing of autonomous vehicles on public roads, potentially leaving perplexed New Yorkers wondering who to flip off when they jaywalk in front of a car without a driver. “We are taking a careful yet balanced approach to incorporating autonomous vehicles on our roads to reduce dangerous driving habits, decrease the number of accidents and save lives on New York roadways,” Cuomo said in a statement. New York is accepting applications from companies interested in testing the vehicles through a year-long pilot program. The crowded race to
develop self-driving technology has sped ahead despite controversy caused by a handful of accidents, the idea of not having humans controlling vehicles physically, and new infrastructure needs. Supporters say it can reduce driver error and make roads safer and more efficient. Thirteen states and the District of Columbia have passed legislation related to autonomous vehicles, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. New York’s program requires manufacturers to adhere to a number of oversight measures and restrictions that could raise objections from an industry that prefers private, real-world testing.
Companies in New York must have a $5 million insurance policy, submit reports to the state, be overseen by the state police and pay the state police for supervising each test. Testing also cannot take place in construction or school zones - which take up huge swaths of land in New York City - and must adhere to a predesignated route shared in advance with the state. Dwayne Johnson would like to be your president, please When Donald Trump was elected president, I imagine that the people of the United States had an epiphany: It doesn’t matter if you’ve never had political experience, or if you have infinite conflicts of interest — you can still be the elected leader of the United States of America. It’s easy! Now, Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, is threatening to run for the highest office. You see, last year The Washington Post published an op-ed suggesting that the 45-year-old could be a viable candidate for the presidency. And as he tells GQ, he’s
since given the idea more thought. “A year ago, it started coming up more and more,” he says. “There was a real sense of earnestness, which made me go home and think, ‘Let me really rethink my answer…’ I didn’t want to be flippant — ‘We’ll have three days off for a weekend! No taxes!” Um, dude. If you’re going to give us a three-day weekend, I can vote you in right now. Johnson, a wrestler turned actor who is somehow both very attractive and very likable, then tells the mag that a run for president could be “a real possibility.” I’m down. Let’s do this.

phone. The 36-year-old may well be the mother of the modern invention of being famous for no real reason, but now she’s looking down on young millennials because they just don’t get it, you know? “Nowadays, I feel like it’s so easy becoming famous,” Hilton said, shrugging. “Anybody with a phone can do it.” Problem is, young people don’t take celebrity-for-noreason seriously anymore. The performance of inhabiting the character Paris Hilton is the role of a lifetime — and one that the former “Simple Life” star takes very seriously. “I never really do anything out of character,” she tells the magazine. “I’m always real.” She’s real, all right. A real case of being rich and terribly out of touch. Cool profile, though.

Patti Lupone slams Madonna’s acting, charms everybody else If you don’t know who Patti Lupone is, you better find out. The 68-year-old is a Broadway icon, known for playing the role of Eva Perón in the original Broadway production of “Evita.” She is a seasoned, sassy professional and she doesn’t suffer any fools. Lupone went on “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen” in support of her newest musical, “War Paint,” and she came for Madonna in one fell swoop. A naive viewer called in to ask a question about Madonna’s performance as “Evita”
For some reason, Paris Hilton is trying to make a comeback. The heiress sat down for a profile with W Magazine in which she combs through the wreckage of the early aughts. Seriously. She forages through “the depths of one of the many closets in her Beverly Hills mansion,” and dusts off the carcasses of her bedazzled Blackberry and a gold Razr flip
in the 1996 film. “Did you and Madonna ever have a conversation about your two iconic performances as Evita?” the caller asked. “Well,” Lupone paused. “I saw [the song] ‘Buenos Aires’ and I thought it was a piece of s—t.” Damn, Patti, tell us how you really feel! “Madonna is a movie killer. She’s dead behind the eyes. She cannot act her way out of a paper bag. She should not be on film, or on stage. She’s a wonderful performer for what she does but she is not an actress. Bing!” Oh, God, I think love this woman.
Abby Lee Miller has spoken out about her recent sentencing. And, honestly, if you know anything about her, it will not at all take you by surprise. After being sentenced to one year in jail for bankruptcy fraud, the scary lady from “Dance Moms” did what anybody else in her position would do: She talked to “Entertainment Tonight.” “I feel relieved,” she told reporters, steps outside of the courthouse where she met her doom.”I feel peaceful.” Still, she knows that prison could be more “Oz,” and less “Orange Is the New Black.” “There’s a few physical limitations, dietary limitations [in prison], of course, but it’ll be OK,” she said.
She also told reporters that she’s not sure how working with the other women will be every day. “It’s a realm of the world I know nothing about.”
So she’s worried about the food and about being in a room full of women. This lady is — pardon my use of old-timey slang — trippin.’

John Cena is still a wrestler, he’s just doing less of it these days. What he really wants to do is act. Over the last few years, the 39-year-old has taken on smaller roles. Many of these have a comedic bent — remember when he and his bizarrely ripped bod stole bits of “Trainwreck”? “The Wall,” on the other hand, is not funny. An intense and strippeddown thriller, it finds two soldiers (Cena and Aaron Taylor-Johnson) battling a sniper in a remote part of Iraq just after the war has ended. Cena actually spends most of the film wounded and passed-out, while Taylor-Johnson tries to stay alive. Not that he minded letting someone else get the spotlight. Your role is very small: You spend almost the entire movie comatose on the ground. It might even be your least active movie performance. [Laughs] Trust me, I have a sense of humor about it. People have been saying, “Hey, man, you
I’d say it’s not just sports that’s borrowed from wrestling. Every political show is people yelling at each other now, like every pundit is a wrestler. Then there’s that, too. That’s nothing more than me challenging a guy to a steel cage match. Before, everyone pointed the finger at the way we tell stories, and now they’ve Xeroxed our playbook.

You have been quietly creeping back into movies, taking small roles here and in “Trainwreck” and “Daddy’s Home,” plus a leading role in the forthcoming “The Pact.” You have said you’re trying to wrestle less, act more. I would do both at the
same time, but the movie guys are a little weird with their insurance. They don’t want me to go smashing my face up. [Laughs] I’m excited for all the opportunities outside the WWE ring, only because it raises awareness of the WWE. I take great pride in my profession, but I’m very aware of the perception of it. I think a lot of people think we are just what we are, and that’s it. There’s nothing wrong with that. But there are plenty of talented people who
travel with the WWE and produce wonderful entertainment every week. We do live sports entertainment, and it’s like no other. To be able to do stuff like this outside of the norm and for people to say, “Wow, that’s pretty good,” that bodes well for getting more eyes on the ring. I get the sense that people are respecting wrestling more and more these days. More and more. And a lot of our methods of entertainment are

‘Master of None’ season two: Dev and Arnold are friendshipgoals Eric Wareheim on the real-life bromance between him and Aziz Ansari, aka, “Big Bud” and “Lil Bud.” KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn
kate.mooney@metro.us
If you watch Netflix’s “Master of None,” you know Aziz Ansari and Eric Wareheim’s onscreen rapport is pretty darn charming. In the comedy series co-created by Ansari and Alan Yang (“Parks and Rec”), Ansari and Wareheim play Dev and Arnold, 30-something besties living in Brooklyn. They call each other “Big Bud” and “Lil Bud” and pass the time making up goofy songs and talking about girls — always while getting down on some serious grub (season one showed them noshing at The Commodore, Mission Chinese, Tacos Morelos food truck, etc.). It’s not so different from how they interact in real life, Wareheim tells us. “All that silly stuff, dancing around and singing — we really do that,” he says, on a call from L.A. “We’re very goofy together. We overanalyze emojis. But at the same time we’re doing it laughing, because we’re not that ridiculous.” Um, but aren’t they, though? The 41-year-old comedian tells us that a lot of inspiration for “Master
of None” season two, out Friday, comes from Aziz and Eric’s real-life antics. This season opens with Dev in Italy, where he’s taking time out from a stalled relationship and career to focus on his true passion: learning to make perfect pasta. Naturally, Arnie — whom Aziz has referred to as Dev’s “token white friend” next to buds Denise (Lena Waithe), and Brian (Kelvin Yu) — comes to visit. “Last year, before the show, we traveled to Europe for a couple months together, got in some trouble, talked about life, talked about girls, and a lot of that ended up in the show,” Wareheim remembers. “The show feels in some way a time capsule of that time, and also of our friendship.” Aww. In one scene, the two get their Volvo stuck in a narrow alley in S i c i l y. That rea l l y h a p pened; all you have to do is look at Ansari’s Instagram for proof. In the show it’s mined for

a man-sized baby while Dev can’t help but video the amusing debacle on his phone. It played out the same way in real life: Wareheim says it was really scary, but of course, Ansari still recorded it. Wareheim, who’s also a supervising producer on the show, says it’s not uncommon for their scenes to come out of improvised sessions. “A couple days before the shoot, we’ll just get together in our hotel room and drink some wine and throw away the script, and just talk to each other about what’s happening, and Aziz would record it on his phone and listen back to it and rewrite the script,” he explains. The two ate very well on their European adventure together, as they do onscreen. Wareheim’s fa-
vorite meal in Italy? “If I had to boil it down to one bite, it would be the tortellini from Osteria Francescana in Modena, that crazy No. 1 restaurant in the world. They make this tortellini in a Parmesan cream sauce, it’s crazy. It’s very old school, nothing fancy, just symbolizes that region.” Apparently their minds are always in their bellies. “Whenever we shoot, we instantly start Yelping what the best food places are in that five-block vicinity for lunch. That’s pretty much what we’re fully focused on, equally as making the show good,” he says. An episode Wareheim directed this season, “First Date,” is one of our favorites. An experimental feat, it shows Dev on a series of first dates that
literally merge into each other over the course of one night (played by multiple actresses, the woman he’s having a glass of wine with morphs into someone else over dinner, someone else on the Uber ride home, and so on). “I wanted to make the audience feel like what it is to date on apps, where you’re kind of walking into this blind, like ‘Who are you?’ [situation] and the way to do that was through that rapid fire, quick-cutting, multiple people kind of thing,” he explains. “It was very scary to go in shooting that way. It could have sucked, but we really mapped it out and I’m so happy with how it turned out.” “Master of None” season two airs Fri., May 12 on Netflix.

I didn’t turn on my computer this weekend. I mean, I checked my phone here and there, but I didn’t do it that much. I can hear the groans already. Yes, we know: Turn off your tech for a bit. You’ll feel better. The thing
is, that’s pretty vague. “You’ll be able to look people in the eyes.” “You’ll remember the simple pleasure of a bird chirping in the trees.” Advice like this always annoyed me, mostly because I love my tech. I love my phone. I love the internet, despite its flaws. I’ve made friends there, and I connect with my family and with former classmates. (Yes, I’m one of those rare people who really liked the people in my high school.) I don’t think we should go back to the age before we had a magical box in our hands that could do anything. But … With the world the way it is (everyone has said this throughout history, but I think we can claim that it really is worse than usual), the news obsession has gotten worse. I used to check my phone a few times a day and my ears perk up like a dog’s
when I hear the email or text noise. But my face wasn’t in the thing 24/7. I didn’t wake up and immediately check my phone to find out what horrible thing someone in government did before 8 a.m. Now I’m afraid to look at my phone before I go to bed, and I’m so obsessed with news that I have 17 tabs open on my computer. (Seriously, I just counted.) So, this weekend: I had worked a crazy week and didn’t stop this weekend, but I wasn’t writing. I just sort of accidentally didn’t open the computer. I didn’t sit at my desk. Once I realized it, I paid attention to what was happening. Don’t laugh, but my heart rate slowed. (I know this because of the tech on my wrist, of course.) My average pulse went from 73 to 66. Not looking at the news clearly lowered my stress level. I realized that, as I was

Maybe we can integrate that into the days where we do have to be internet-attached? Turn it off during lunch? At 10 p.m.? Maybe because of this, I’ll make sure my head hits the back of the couch. Just give it a try. It couldn’t hurt.
instead of leaning slightly forward, as though news were on the way. By Sunday night, I realized that I didn’t know where my phone was. (It was under the cat’s butt, in case you were wondering. I guess it was warm?) I realized I hadn’t checked it in hours. I realized that I didn’t care. Now, I’m not saying we should all completely unplug. I wouldn’t want

If you need a break from staring at a TV screening but don’t want to stray too far from the show, then nip into BAM’s “Peak Performances,” a series devoted to films featuring members of its eclectic cast. And they are quite eclectic — forgotten movie stars, aging Oscar winners and whatever other amazing weirdos Lynch was able to find on his travels through one weird industry. Witness Kyle MacLachlan with some very funny hair in Oliver Stone’s “The Doors.” Behold both Richard Beymer (Ben Horne) and Russ Tamblyn (Dr. Jacoby) when they were young, singing and strutting and snapping their way through “West Side Story.” The motley crew contain multitudes, their
films spanning “Carrie” (with Piper Laurie, aka Catherine Martell) through “Slap Shot” (with Michael Ontkean, aka Harry S. And of course, no “Peaks” cram session is complete without watching the prequel movie “Fire Walk with Me,” which kicks the series off with a monstrous bang on Friday. Once hated, now semireclaimed, it’s a harrowing horror show with a truly Oscar-deserving turn from Sheryl Lee as the alive Laura Palmer. And besides, it’s at least better than that section of Season 2 where things went horribly, horribly wrong.

This Saturday, get your buzz on, find your flow and contribute to a feminist cause. On the day before Mother’s Day, Beer Fit Club brings Beer & Yoga: Female Power Edition to Sunset Park’s Lineup Brewing. For $27, attendees get a pint of beer paired with a 60 minute yoga class; or, they can opt for the full access pass at $37, which includes a tasting flight of beers and a tour of the brewery. A portion of proceeds will go to Planned Parenthood. The female vibes keep coming. For one, Lineup Brewing’s founder and brewmaster Kat Martinez is the first woman in Brooklyn to operate her own brewery solo. Beer Fit Club is also an allfemale-owned company. “We wanted this edition to celebrate strong, independent women with a portion of sales going to a cause we both
strongly believe in,” says Martinez. Beer Fit Club founder Sophia Del Gigante has been hosting yoga classes in breweries throughout New York City and Long Island since founding the company in 2015. “It’s a way to make fitness more fun and accessible to people,” says the 35-year-old Long Island resident. “People want to be fit, but

‘Preacher’ When Seth Rogen introduced fans to Jesse Custer, a man inhabited by the renegade spawn of an angel and a demon, he created a cult following around this Texas-based show. Although the town of Annville, Texas, doesn’t actually exist, Rogen’s followers can get the “Preacher” vibe with a visit to Fort Worth. Having started as a cattle town in the 1800s, it’s preserved that Old West atmosphere where you can still experience an authentic cattle drive twice a day at the historic

‘Outlander’ Step back in time and retrace Claire and Jaime’s journey through the Scottish Highlands in the city that started it all. Inverness is where the storyline began years ago when Claire and her husband ventured out to retrace Frank’s Scottish roots. Uncover your own Scottish ancestry at the Highland Archive Centre, or journey out to Clava Cairns to see the mysterious site that inspired the show’s Craigh na Dun. Stay at the Culloden House for the chance to sleep in the actual battle headquarters used by Bonnie Prince Charlie prior to the battle on Culloden
Moor during the Jacobite uprising in 1745-46.
‘Everest Rescue’ Fans of this six-part miniseries don’t need to put their lives at risk to get a memorable Everest experience. A three-day trek in Solukhumbu, Nepal, (sherpa guide and porter included) from the Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla is all it takes for thrillseekers to be face-to-face with the giant mountain herself at the Hotel Everest View. This 13,000-foot-elevation hotel is the highest in the world, and offers the best accommodations for adventuring (safely!) around the foothills of Mount Everest.
‘Homeland’ When Carrie Mathison
moved to Berlin in Season 5 to work as head of security for Otto Düring, she gave fans an entirely new city to explore. Check out Peter Quinn’s hiding spot on Revaler Strasse, grab a bite to eat at Restaurant Grosz AT Kurfürstendamm or at Café Godot, and hold a clandestine meeting on a park bench in Monbijoupark to get the full “Homeland” experience. Stay at the Maritim Hotel Berlin (the real filming location for Carrie and Otto’s Lebanon hotel in Episode 2) or at the Hotel Adlon Kempinski.

Despite the fact that the center of this petite Italian village is car-free, Courmayeur acts as the perfect base for living out “Top Gear” fantasies. The town is situated at the bottom of Mont Blanc, and is the official starting point of the Maserati range’s custom test drives. Beginning at the swanky Maserati Mountain Lounge on the via Roma, car enthusiasts can book a time to test out the Italian brand’s best, including the new Levante.
‘Westworld’ The futuristic Westernthemed park Westworld may be the stuff of fantasies, but the setting for this hit show is quite real. Many of the show’s exterior shots were taken in Moab, Utah, around Dead Horse Point State Park and Canyonlands National Park. Plan a road trip along State Route 128 to retrace the route the tourists took to enter the park. (The film crew attached a train car set to a flatbed truck and drove it up and down Route 128 to film the scenes.) Book a yurt in Dead Horse Point State Park to see the background from the Man in Black’s perspective.

The other Disneyland Here’s your guide to doing California’s biggest theme park without kids.
Disneyland in Anaheim is a short drive from Los Angeles, and a portal to a strange utopia where you can experience life like a child, even if you don’t bring a child with you. In fact, don’t bring a child with you. You’re now an adult who can do whatever you want, and this makes Disneyland a very different and wonderful place. Go on a weekday If you absolutely hate lines and crowds, check Is It Packed before making Disneyland plans. The best days to go are Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and if you can wait until the crowd prediction is “Ghost Town,” you’ll have the best chance for very short wait times.
Insider Tip: The Disneyland app will give you real-time updates of wait times for all attractions so you can better plan your day. Getting there You can also take the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner down from Union Station in Downtown L.A., which is a beautiful train ride, and there’s a shuttle from the Anaheim station straight to the parks. First things first Your first stop before entering the park should always be Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar at the Disneyland Hotel. This is a short walk from Downtown Disney, and a pretty excellent spot to prepare for your adventures. Depending on the drinks being ordered, there are special effects that happen throughout the bar. After a drink or two, make the short walk to Downtown Disney and jump straight onto the tram to the park.
Once in Tomorrowland, check your app for wait times. (I’m a huge Space Mountain fan, so I get a FastPass before riding anything else to ensure my peace of mind.) With your favorite FastPass secured, it’s time to mill about the rest of the park. Buzz Lightyear is a fun way to get competitive with your friends. No grudges in the Happiest Place on Earth!

Regret-filled Rangers reflect on postseason loss to Senators After seeing their season come to an end in Game 6 on Tuesday night, the Rangers are left to rue their missed opportunities. JOE PANTORNO @JoePantorno
joseph.pantorno@metro.us
The New York Rangers’ season came to an end on Tuesday night after a 4-2 loss at the hands of the Ottawa Senators eliminated them from the Eastern Conference semifinals in six games. While the Senators head to the Eastern Conference final for the first time since 2007, the Rangers are left to wonder, what if ? This was a team that let multiple leads slip away, including three, two-goal leads in Game 2 and another in Game 5. They also allowed the tying goal with 1:02 remaining in Game 2 and with 1:26 left in the series’ penultimate game. Had the Blueshirts just been able to hold on a little longer, or just win one on the road, they could have been the ones headed to the Eastern Conference finals. But they basically found a way to

The excruciating losses are something that will haunt team captain and defenseman Ryan McDonagh. “I don’t know if I’ve really ever gone through a series like this where we seemed to shoot ourselves in the foot as far as closing games out or not playing well in crucial situations, McDonagh said. “We have nobody to blame but ourselves and that’s the truth of the situation. It was a lot for head coach Alain Vigneault to sift through, as he tried to comprehend his team’s elimination. “We were in all of those games, we didn’t make the defensive play when we needed to and we didn’t make the offensive play to bury them, Vigneault said. “You have to give them a lot of credit. They played well and they deserved to win. It’s now 23 years since the Rangers lifted their last Stanley Cup and three since Vigneault led the Blueshirts to an Eastern Conference title in his first season with the team. Big changes could be on the way, but right now, this team has to try and move on from this loss.

HARVEY NEEDS TO WALK THE STRAIGHT AND NARROW PATH OPINION
SID ROSENBERG @sidrosenberg
To put it lightly, the Mets’ season has gotten off to less than an optimal start. The latest mishap in this early-season series of unfortunate events hasn’t even been on the field. The Mets suspended Matt Harvey three games for failing to show up to the ballpark last weekend. Harvey has since apologized for his actions, but early on, it was reported that he was failing to own up. As a 28-year-old young man, he should be able to own up to his mistakes immediately. A professional organization is paying you millions of dollars
to work once every five days for seven months out of the year. You should show them more respect. In 2013, when Matt Harvey was asked about New York, he cited that Derek Jeter would be the model for being a professional athlete in the greatest city on Earth. Right off the bat, Harvey made immediate mention of women Jeter dated. Shows you where his head is, ultimately. It was not and is still not on the baseball diamond. For a guy who has just 31 wins over his first five seasons in the big leagues, Harvey has to set his priorities straight if he wants to live up to his idol’s reign in New York. Well here’s a news flash Matt: It’s no longer
If Matt Harvey can’t shape up and put the Mets first, there is no way he can succeed in New York.

have a tough time with some decisions while staying out of trouble. But when you compare yourself to one of the all-time greats in your profession, you should be prepared to back that up.
As an athlete, when you start ending up in the tabloids for all the wrong reasons, it is not only the individual that is affected. Harvey’s actions not only affect his future with the Mets, it creates ripples among the players in the clubhouse who want to respect the organization. You can imagine how frustrating it is to work toward success alongside someone who is not committed to the goal. Ironically in all of this, Harvey now actually does end up having a connection with Jeter — and that’s his dating of supermodel Adriana Lima, whom the Yankee captain once had a fling with. I think it’s about time that Harvey stops trying to swim in Jeter’s wake, because he looks to be drowning.
