OUSTER OF COMEY TESTS GRADUATES TURN BACKS REPORTER JAILED AFTER NEW JUSTICE APPOINTEE IN PROTEST ON DEVOS QUESTIONING TOM PRICE

1

The newly appointed second-in-command at the U.S. Justice Department faced a weighty task just two weeks after taking office — writing the rationale for firing FBI Director James Comey. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein argued the case for Comey’s sacking in a three-page memo to Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday. President Donald Trump acted swiftly to dismiss

the director later that day. Rosenstein cited Comey’s controversial public statements about the bureau’s investigation into Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of state. REUTERS

Graduating seniors at Bethune-Cookman University in Florida turned their backs in protest of U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos at the start of her commencement speech at the historically black institution. Boos and jeers could be heard as DeVos, who drew ire in February when she said historically black colleges were “pioneers” of educational choice, was introduced. Faculty and school administrators

on stage stood and applauded. Live video of the ceremony in Daytona Beach showed many graduates facing away from DeVos, though it was not clear how many of the approximately 300 seniors participated in the silent protest. “One of the hallmarks of higher education and of democracy is the ability to converse with and learn from those with whom we disagree,” DeVos told the graduates. A West Virginia journalist was arrested and jailed after following U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price down a hallway in the state’s capitol building and peppering him with questions about healthcare policy, the reporter said. Journalist Dan Heyman was grabbed by security and handcuffed after repeatedly calling out a question to Price as the health secretary visited the Charleston

legislature with White House advisor Kellyanne Conway on Tuesday, Heyman said at a press conference after the incident. “I’m not sure why, but at some point I think they decided I was just too persistent in asking this question and trying to do my job, so they arrested me,” said Heyman, who works for Public News Service. CUBA IS BIG OPPORTUNITY FOR TRAVEL COMPANIES

5

Cuba represents a “huge” but challenging opportunity for U.S. cruise, airline and hotel companies as American visitors to the Caribbean island could increase as much as sevenfold by 2025, according to a report by the Boston Consulting Group. As many as two million Americans could visit, up from 285,000 last year, excluding Cuban Americans, the BCG study published on Wednesday estimated.

Given tourism infrastructure is already creaking, that means there are business opportunities aplenty but U.S companies must learn to navigate a centrallyplanned economy with its quirks. U.S. travel to Cuba has already surged, albeit from very low levels, in the last two years since the former Cold War allies announced a detente and the Obama administration eased travel restrictions to the island. New Men’s Sex Pill Makes Viagra Obsolete

Scientific advance made just for older men. Works on both men’s physical ability and their desire in bed. By Harlan S. Waxman Health News Syndicate New York – If you’re like the rest of us guys over 50, you probably already know the truth… Prescription ED pills may work, but they don’t solve all the probems in the bedroom and they are very expensive. Dr. Bassam Damaj, chief scientific officer at the world famous Innovus Pharma Laboratories, explains, “As we get older, we need more help in bed. Not only does our desire fade; but erections can be soft or feeble, one of the main complaints with prescription pills. Besides, they’re expensive… costing as much as $50.00 each.” Plus, it does nothing to stimulate your brain to want sex. “I don’t care what you take; if you aren’t interested in sex, you can’t get or keep an erection. It’s physiologically impossible,” said Dr. Damaj.

WORKS ON YOUR MIND AND YOUR BODY The new formula takes on erectile problems with a whole new twist. It doesn’t just address the physical problems of getting older; it works on the mental part of sex too. Unlike the expensive prescriptions, the new pill stimulates your sexual brain chemistry as well, actually helping you regain the passion and burning desire you had for your partner again. So you will want sex with the hunger and stamina of a 25-year-old.

THE BRAIN CONNECTION Vesele® takes off where Viagra® only begins. Thanks to a discovery made by 3 Nobel-Prize winning scientists, Vesele® has become the first ever patented supplement to harden you and your libido. So you regain your desire as well as the ability to act on it. In a 16-week clinical study, scientists from the U.S.A. joined forces to prove Nitric Oxide’s effects on the cardio vascular system. They showed that Nitric Oxide could not only increase your ability to get an erection, it would also work on your brainwaves to stimulate your desire for sex. The results were remarkable and published in the world’s most respected medical journals.

can’t produce enough of it to keep up with demand. Even doctors are having a tough time getting their hands on it. So what’s all the fuss about?

But now, for the first time ever, there’s a pill made just for older men. It’s called Vesele®. A new pill that helps you in bed by stimulating your body and your brainwaves. So Vesele® can work even when nothing else worked before. The new men’s pill is not a drug. It’s something completely different. Because you don’t need a prescription for Vesele®, sales are exploding. The maker just

THE SCIENCE The study asked men, 45 to 65 years old to take the main ingredient in Vesele® once a day. Then they were instructed not to change the way they eat or exercise but to take Vesele® twice a day. What happened next was remarkable. Virtually every man in the study who took Vesele® twice a day reported a huge difference in their desire for sex. In layman’s terms, they were horny again. They also experienced harder erections that lasted for almost 20 minutes. The placebo controlled group (who received sugar pills) mostly saw no difference. AN UNEXPECTED BONUS: The study results even showed an impressive increase in the energy, brain-power and memory of the participants.

SUPPLY LIMITED BY OVERWHELMING DEMAND “Once we saw the results we knew we had a game-changer said Dr. Damaj. We get

hundreds of calls a day from people begging us for a bottle. It’s been crazy. We try to meet the crushing demand for Vesele®.”

VESELE® PASSED THE TEST “As an expert in the development of sexual dysfunction, I’ve studied the effectiveness of Nitric Oxide on the body and the brain. I’m impressed by the way it increases cerebral and penile blood flow. The result is evident in the creation of Vesele®. It’s sure-fire proof that the mind/body connection is unbeatable when achieving and maintaining an erection and the results are remarkable” said Dr. Damaj.

HERE’S WHAT MEN ARE SAYING • I’m ready to go sexually and mentally. • More frequent erections at night and in the morning. • I have seen a change in sexual desire. • Typically take 1 each morning and 1 each night. Q&A: City controller candidate promises to challenge the status quo Rebecca Rhynhart, candidate for city controller, talks about her plans to make real change happen in Philly. MADELINE PRESLAND @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

Criticized by some for lacking experience as an elected official and praised by others for the exact same reason, Rebecca Rhynhart is the underdog with an edge. That edge was on display when Rhynhart, a candidate for city controller — effectively Philadelphia’s chief financial officer — confronted incumbent City Controller Alan Butkovitz during a debate Tuesday night. “My opponent is so beholden to the political machine that he does not take the tough stances

that I would make,” Rhynhart said. “I have the scars of fighting the political system for all the time I’ve been in office,” Butkovitz hotly retorted. Rhynhart, 42, claimed during the debate, “Voters have a choice: four years of the same, or a new vision.” Butkovitz, 65 and in his third term, told her, “You’re unaware of the office’s history.” Rhynhart has 15 years of experience in finance, in part with Bear Stearns right before their 2008 collapse, and since then as Philadelphia city treasurer, budget director under Mayors Nutter and Kenney, and as Kenney’s chief administrative officer until last December. Butkovitz, previously an attorney, has a reputation for going against the grain and exposing fiscal waste in high-profile investigations, from city

There are millions of dollars there to give to the schools. There’s real money, and we need it. Overall, we can save a minimum of $10 million to give to the schools and rec centers of Philadelphia. I would also want to do an independent audit of the Controller’s Office itself. What was the final push that made you want to run for this position? I was 95 percent decided before the election in November. After November, I knew I had to jump in and run for office. That was a more personal feeling that I needed to step up, and people needed to step up and run for office. We need to be more efficient than ever with our financial resources.

Harold Slutsky, DMD ORTHODONTIST

process. Here’s how Rhynhart wants to get the job done. What made you want to leave the private sector and enter public service? After several years of working on Wall Street, I saw that government didn’t always make the best financial choices for themselves. I wanted to use my experience to help government make the best choices it can make. I’m from this area and care deeply about this city. People deserve a government that makes good financial decisions. How are you qualified to make real change happen in the Office of the

City Controller? I have no problem standing my ground — I wouldn’t be running for office if I couldn’t. I’m running based on my qualifications. I have more financial experience than Butkovitz ever had. I can stand up to the mayor if I need to. The much bigger issue here is my opponent’s being part of the political machine in Philadelphia, and he doesn’t actually stand up to that machine.

What is something that you focus on that voters may not know about you? My focus on government transparency and making much more information available to the public. Our processes should be much more transparent, and we should be releasing information on what we’re spending on, as a city government. There’s a lot of hope in my message. There’s hope for real change in Philadelphia politics. I want to be that change.

What are some of the first issues you would tackle if you were elected? The Philadelphia Parking Authority hasn’t been audited since 2009.

Amtrak engineer Brandon Bostian sped a train up to 106 mph on May 12, 2015, just before it leapt the tracks at a curve in Frankford, killing eight and injuring 200. But the Philadelphia DA’s office won’t file criminal charges against Bostian because, they said, they could not prove “criminal intent.” To Bill Hobson, lawyer for contractor Griffin Campbell, who got 15 to 30 years for overseeing the demolition at 22nd and Market that killed seven and injured a dozen, there was a different answer. “It comes down to the same factor: There are two justice systems in this country, one for those who are white and one for those who are black. One for those that have money and one for those that don’t,” Hobson said. To Hobson, Campbell also had no criminal intent. Prosecutors argued Campbell should have stopped the unsafe demolition that ultimately proved deadly when backhoe operator Sean Benschop knocked a wall onto an adjacent Salvation Army store, crushing shoppers and staff inside. (Benschop pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 7½ to 15 years.) Hobson argued at trial that Campbell wasn’t properly trained or licensed and was just hired because he offered a low bid. “Between that train engineer and Grif Campbell, who do you think was more properly trained? The train guy,” he said. “Clearly you could charge him [Bostian] with reckless endangerment. I think you could have

charged him with manslaughter.” The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) found Bostian accelerated by mistake after losing “situational awareness” while distracted by radio reports a few minutes earlier of a SEPTA Regional Rail train having its windshield shattered by a thrown rock. In his testimony about the accident, he said he was thinking about a fellow engineer who had been hurt in an accident and was thinking about his own safety. Philadelphia DA Seth Williams convened an investigating grand jury to prepare indictments after the building collapse. But Hobson said no grand jury was formed after the derailment because, he said, Williams “lacked intestinal fortitude” and “was dealing with his own problems.” (Williams is currently facing an impending federal trial on corruption charges.) Campbell and Benschop were charged with multiple counts of murder. “It just seemed like they needed a fall guy. There was so much outrage over this,” said Rodney Muhammad, executive director of the Philadelphia chapter of the NAACP, which has pleaded for reconsideration of Campbell’s sentence. “Now, to hear in the news that someone driving at 106 mph on a curve – clearly recklessness was shown, disregard for human life was shown — and they’re not going to be charged … that’s deeply troubling.” Campbell was found to only be “one percent” responsible for the collapse at the victims’ civil trial against the Salvation Army, the late developer Richard Basciano, who ordered the demolition, and Marinakos, which concluded with a $265 million verdict for victims and their families.

Philadelphia DA spent campaign funds on birthday parties, facials and massages, feds say A newly unsealed indictment on Tuesday also claimed that Seth Williams used city vehicles for personal use. HAYDEN MITMAN @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

Embattled Philadelphia DA Seth Williams has been hit with even more charges of fraud stemming from allegations that he misused political action committee funds and government vehicles. According to a superseding indictment unsealed on Tuesday, Williams allegedly used PAC funds to pay for dinner parties, family events and other personal expenses over the course of six years. Acting New Jersey U.S. Attorney William E. Fitzpatrick announced Tuesday that prosecutors have now brought 29 charges against the 50-year-old Williams, of Philadelphia, including 11 counts of travel and use of interstate facilities to promote and facilitate bribery, two counts of Hobbs Act extortion under color of official right, two counts of honest services wire fraud, 12 counts of wire fraud and two counts of mail fraud. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the new charges are based on the use of funding from the Friends of Seth Williams or “The Committee to Elect Seth Williams” PAC. Legally, these types of funds are only allowed to be used in relation to political campaigns. However, according to the new indictment, for six years — from August 2010 through August 2016 — Williams allegedly used

PAC funding for personal expenses and covered it up by providing false or incomplete reports. For instance, the indictment claims that between August and September of 2010, the PAC disbursed two checks to a political consultant for about $4,136.59. After that political consultant obtained those funds, the indictment claims that within days of writing that check, Williams obtained a check from the consultant in the amount of $4,036.59, which Williams then put into his own bank account and used for personal expenses. The indictment also claims Williams used the PAC’s debit card for a variety of expenses that were not used in connection with any election. This, court documents note, included: $677.98 for a New Year’s Eve celebration in 2013, $195.50 for a facial and massage in January of 2014, $777.19 for an April 10, 2014, birthday dinner, $491.50 for a massage, facial, gift card and fitness classes in January of 2015, approximately $2,674.41 for an April 10, 2015, birthday dinner and approximately $211.50 for massages in May 2015. Williams also allegedly used the PAC’s debit card to pay for massages to the tune of about $222.50 in January of 2013, $209 in July of 2013, $251.50 in September of 2013, and $90 in November of 2013. Williams is also accused in the indictment of using city vehicles and vehicles for the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program in Philadelphia and Camden, of which Williams was an executive board member — for his personal use during nonworking hours, nights and weekends.

Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams leaves federal court in Philly after being indicted on federal corruption charges. Williams was hit with additional charges on Tuesday. SAM NEWHOUSE

Philly cop gives woman heroin, then she was in a fatal car crash, reports say Authorities have not commented on the rumored investigation into a Philly cop who retired last week. HAYDEN MITMAN @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

A former Philadelphia police officer is reportedly under investigation by the FBI on suspicion that the 21-year veteran of the force provided heroin to a York County woman before she was involved in a fatal car crash that killed her own grandmother. Narcotics officer Stanley Davis Jr. retired abruptly last week as a federal probe began to investigate his activities, CBS and the Inquirer reported. On Wednesday, a representative for the Philadelphia Police Department confirmed that Davis is no longer employed as a police officer in the city. But they declined to comment on the rumors. An FBI rep said they could neither confirm nor deny any investigation. According to CBS

Philadelphia, the federal investigation into Davis began after a Nov. 16 car crash that occurred in Chester County involving a woman they identified as Rosie Forsyth. CBS reported that at the time of her arrest, Forsyth, whose grandmother was a passenger in her vehicle at the time, was found with needle marks in her arms, and state police said that she appeared to be under the influence. Her grandmother, identified as Thelma Frey, reportedly died eight days later from injuries sustained during the crash. According to CBS, “multiple sources believe that Davis, who was assigned to work with the FBI at the time, provided the woman with heroin confiscated from drug busts, which she is believed to have used prior to the fatal crash. Why Davis might have given heroin to the woman has not been reported. No charges have yet been brought against Davis, but Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross told CBS that he expects to see charges “within the next week or so.

The ouster stunned Washington and plunged Trump deeper into a controversy over his campaign’s alleged ties with Russia that has dogged the early days of his presidency. FBI Director James Comey sought to expand his agency’s probe into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election days before President Donald Trump fired him Tuesday, a congressional source said Wednesday. With the Republican president facing a storm of criticism from many Democrats and some lawmakers in his own party, the Trump administration accused Comey

Democrats intensified accusations on Wednesday that Comey’s removal was intended to undermine the FBI probe and demanded an independent investigation. Some of Trump’s fellow Republicans called the action troubling. Trump, who met Russia’s foreign minister at the White House on Wednesday, defended his abrupt firing of Comey from a law-enforcement post he had held since 2013, saying he had not been doing a good job. Comey informed lawmakers of that request after the Senate intelligence committee had asked the FBI to speed up its Russia inquiry, the source said. Democrat Dianne Feinstein, the leading Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Commit-

tee, told reporters she understood that Comey was seeking more resources for the FBI investigation. She said she met with Comey on March 15 along with Republican Senator Chuck Grassley. At the time Comey said it was “a big counter-intelligence and criminal investigation,” Feinstein said. REUTERS

Senate committee subpoenas former Trump adviser Flynn over Russia The U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee issued a subpoena on Wednesday demanding documents related to Russia from President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn, ramping up its monthslong investigation of Moscow’s alleged meddling in the 2016 U.S. election. In a joint statement, Sens. Richard Burr, the committee’s Republican chairman, and Mark Warner, its top Democrat, said the committee had first requested the documents from Flynn in an April 28 letter, but the retired lieutenant general had declined, through counsel, to cooperate with the committee’s request. Warner said that the committee has been receiving documents as it in-

vestigates allegations that Russia sought to influence the U.S. election, something Moscow denies. But he told Reuters that some people were not complying “so we were going to take next steps. The Trump administration denies any collusion with Russia. Flynn has been a focus of investigations into Russia and the election. He was forced to resign as Trump’s national security adviser for failing to

disclose the content of his talks with Sergey Kislyak, Russia’s ambassador to the United States, and then misleading Vice President Mike Pence about the conversations. Former Acting U.S. Attorney General Sally Yates testified at a highprofile hearing on Monday that she had warned the White House in January that Flynn had been compromised and could have been vulnerable to blackmail by Russia. The subpoena was announced a day after Trump abruptly fired FBI Director James Comey, who had been leading the bureau’s investigation of Russia and the election. Comey’s firing prompted a storm of criticism from Democrats, who accused the president of seeking to stall the probe. REUTERS

Governor: New York to allow self-driving vehicle testing New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Wednesday that the state will allow testing of autonomous vehicles on public roads, potentially leaving perplexed New Yorkers wondering who to flip off when they jaywalk in front of a car without a driver. “We are taking a careful yet balanced approach to incorporating autonomous vehicles on our roads to reduce dangerous driving habits, decrease the number of accidents and save lives on New York roadways,â€? Cuomo said in a statement. New York is accepting applications from companies interested in testing the vehicles through a year-long pilot program. The crowded race to

Companies in New York must have a $5 million insurance policy, submit reports to the state, be overseen by the state police and pay the state police for supervising each test. Testing also cannot take place in construction or school zones - which take up huge swaths of land in New York City - and must adhere to a predesignated route shared in advance with the state.

develop self-driving technology has sped ahead despite controversy caused by a handful of accidents, the idea of not having humans controlling vehicles physically, and new infrastructure needs. Supporters say it can reduce driver error and make roads safer and more efficient. Thirteen states and the District of Columbia have passed legislation related to autonomous vehicles, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. New York’s program requires manufacturers to adhere to a number of oversight measures and restrictions that could raise objections from an industry that prefers private, real-world testing.

Not long ago, nobody knew that the only U.S. State Silver Bars locked away in the private vaults of the Lincoln Treasury would be allocated to the Federated Mint for a limited release to residents in 7 states. Every single one of the 50 U.S. State Silver Bars are date numbered in the order they ratified the Constitution and were admitted into the Union beginning in the late 1700s. “As Executive Advisor to the Lincoln Treasury I get paid to deliver breaking news. So, for anyone who hasn’t heard yet, highly collectable U.S. State Silver Bars are now being handed over at just the state minimum set by the Lincoln Treasury to residents in 7 states who beat the offer deadline, which is why I pushed for this announcement to be widely advertised,” said Mary Ellen Withrow, the emeritus 40th Treasurer of the United States of America. “These bars are solid .999 pure fine silver and will always be a valuable precious metal which is why everyone is snapping up as many as they can before they’re all gone,” Withrow said. There’s one thing Withrow wants to make very clear. State residents only have

two days to call the Toll Free Order Hotlines to get the U.S. State Silver Bars. “These valuable U.S. State Silver Bars are impossible to get at banks, credit unions or the U.S. Mint. In fact, they’re only being handed over at state minimum set by the Lincoln Treasury to PA, NY, NJ, MD, DE, OH and WV residents who call the Toll Free Hotline before the deadline ends two days from today’s publication date”, said Timothy J. To make it fair, special Toll Free Overflow Hotlines have been set up to ensure all residents have an equal chance to get them. Rapid shipments to state residents are scheduled to begin with the first calls being accepted at precisely 8:30am today. “We’re bracing for all the calls and doing everything we can to make sure no one gets left out, but the U.S. State Silver Bars are only being handed over at just the state resident minimum set by the Lincoln Treasury for the next two days. For now, residents can get the U.S. State Silver Bars at just the state minimum set by the Lincoln Treasury as long as they call before the order deadline ends,” confirmed Shissler. “With so many state residents trying to get these U.S. State Silver Bars, lines are busy so keep trying. Dwayne Johnson would like to be your president, please When Donald Trump was elected president, I imagine that the people of the United States had an epiphany: It doesn’t matter if you’ve never had political experience, or if you have infinite conflicts of interest — you can still be the elected leader of the United States of America. It’s easy! Now, Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, is threatening to run for the highest office. You see, last year The Washington Post published an op-ed suggesting that the 45-year-old could be a viable candidate for the presidency. And as he tells GQ, he’s

since given the idea more thought. “A year ago, it started coming up more and more,” he says. “There was a real sense of earnestness, which made me go home and think, ‘Let me really rethink my answer…’ I didn’t want to be flippant — ‘We’ll have three days off for a weekend! No taxes!” Um, dude. If you’re going to give us a three-day weekend, I can vote you in right now. Johnson, a wrestler turned actor who is somehow both very attractive and very likable, then tells the mag that a run for president could be “a real possibility.” I’m down. Let’s do this.

phone. The 36-year-old may well be the mother of the modern invention of being famous for no real reason, but now she’s looking down on young millennials because they just don’t get it, you know? “Nowadays, I feel like it’s so easy becoming famous,” Hilton said, shrugging. “Anybody with a phone can do it.” Problem is, young people don’t take celebrity-for-noreason seriously anymore. The performance of inhabiting the character Paris Hilton is the role of a lifetime — and one that the former “Simple Life” star takes very seriously. “I never really do anything out of character,” she tells the magazine. “I’m always real.” She’s real, all right. A real case of being rich and terribly out of touch. Cool profile, though.

Abby Lee Miller responds to sentencing

Patti Lupone slams Madonna’s acting, charms everybody else If you don’t know who Patti Lupone is, you better find out. The 68-year-old is a Broadway icon, known for playing the role of Eva Perón in the original Broadway production of “Evita.” She is a seasoned, sassy professional and she doesn’t suffer any fools. Lupone went on “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen” in support of her newest musical, “War Paint,” and she came for Madonna in one fell swoop. A naive viewer called in to ask a question about Madonna’s performance as “Evita”

For some reason, Paris Hilton is trying to make a comeback. The heiress sat down for a profile with W Magazine in which she combs through the wreckage of the early aughts. Seriously. She forages through “the depths of one of the many closets in her Beverly Hills mansion,” and dusts off the carcasses of her bedazzled Blackberry and a gold Razr flip

in the 1996 film. “Did you and Madonna ever have a conversation about your two iconic performances as Evita?” the caller asked. “Well,” Lupone paused. “I saw [the song] ‘Buenos Aires’ and I thought it was a piece of s—t.” Damn, Patti, tell us how you really feel! “Madonna is a movie killer. She’s dead behind the eyes. She cannot act her way out of a paper bag. She should not be on film, or on stage. She’s a wonderful performer for what she does but she is not an actress. Bing!” Oh, God, I think love this woman.

Abby Lee Miller has spoken out about her recent sentencing. And, honestly, if you know anything about her, it will not at all take you by surprise. After being sentenced to one year in jail for bankruptcy fraud, the scary lady from “Dance Moms” did what anybody else in her position would do: She talked to “Entertainment Tonight.” “I feel relieved,” she told reporters, steps outside of the courthouse where she met her doom.”I feel peaceful.” Still, she knows that prison could be more “Oz,” and less “Orange Is the New Black.” “There’s a few physical limitations, dietary limitations [in prison], of course, but it’ll be OK,” she said.

She also told reporters that she’s not sure how working with the other women will be every day. “It’s a realm of the world I know nothing about.”

So she’s worried about the food and about being in a room full of women. This lady is — pardon my use of old-timey slang — trippin.’

I didn’t turn on my computer this weekend. I mean, I checked my phone here and there, but I didn’t do it that much. I can hear the groans already. Yes, we know: Turn off your tech for a bit. You’ll feel better. Advice like this always annoyed me, mostly because I love my tech. I love my phone. I love the internet, despite its flaws. I’ve made friends there, and I connect with my family and with former classmates. I don’t think we should go back to the age before we had a magical box in our hands that could do anything. But … With the world the way it is, the news obsession has gotten worse. I used to check my phone a few times a day. But my

face wasn’t in the thing 24/7. Now I’m afraid to look at my phone before I go to bed, and I’m so obsessed with news that I have 17 tabs open on my computer. So, this weekend I just sort of accidentally didn’t open the computer. Don’t laugh, but my heart rate slowed. My average pulse went from 73 to 66. Not looking at the news clearly lowered my stress level.

ISTOCK

It was relaxing to be off that weird mental schedule. I know this sounds strange, but I realized that, when I was sitting on the couch, I let my head drop back instead of leaning slightly forward, as though news were on the way. By Sunday night, I realized that I didn’t know where my phone was. (It was under the cat’s butt, in case you were wondering.) I realized I hadn’t checked it

in hours. I realized that I didn’t care. I’m not saying we should all completely unplug. I’m just saying that an occasional break is a good thing. Watch your body and see what it does. Maybe we can integrate that into the days where we do have to be internetattached? Maybe because of this, I’ll make sure my head hits the back of the couch. Just give it a try. It couldn’t hurt.

watch more wrestling You spend almost the entire movie comatose on the ground. It might even be your least active movie performance. [Laughs] Trust me, I have a sense of humor about it. People have been saying, “Hey, man, you were on the ground a lot! I totally get it. But that’s what it called for. Sometimes it’s not the number of pages or minutes of screen time. It’s just being part of a good story. You have been quietly creeping back into movies, taking small roles here and in “Trainwreck and “Daddy’s Home, plus a leading role in the forthcoming “The Pact. You have said you’re trying to wrestle less, act more. I would do both at the same time, but the movie guys are a little weird with their insurance. They don’t want me to go smashing my face up. [Laughs] I’m excited for all the opportunities

outside the WWE ring, only because it raises awareness of the WWE. I take great pride in my profession, but I’m very aware of the perception of it. I think a lot of people think we are just what we are, and that’s it. There’s nothing wrong with that. But there are plenty of talented people who travel with the WWE and produce wonderful entertainment every week. We do live sports entertainment, and it’s like no other. To be GETTY

able to do stuff like this outside of the norm and for people to say, “Wow, that’s pretty good, that bodes well for getting more eyes on the ring. I get the sense that people are respecting wrestling more and more these days. More and more. And a lot of our methods of entertainment are being adopted by both mainstream sports and mainstream entertainment. If you look at how ESPN has shifted its content, the

way shows feature a lot of argumentative debate rather than informative sports reporting, then sports borrows a lot from the WWE. I’m very happy to see it, and I think that’s what leading to more understanding of what we do and respecting it. I’d say it’s not just sports that’s borrowed from wrestling. Every political show is people yelling at each other now, like every pundit is a wrestler. Then there’s that, too. That’s nothing more than me challenging a guy to a steel cage match. Before, everyone pointed the finger at the way we tell stories, and now they’ve Xeroxed our playbook. The big dierence is you guys are open about it being pure performance. Yes, we’re the only folks who will tell you it’s for entertainment.

The best restaurants for Mother’s Day Tea time or tipsy time? Let mom decide. JENNIFER LOGUE @jenniferlogue

jennifer.logue@metro.us

Mother’s Day only comes once a year, so pampering the No. 1 lady in your life with a decadent meal is a must. Depending on her personal style, Philly has a variety of options

for all kinds of moms. Is she a history buff ? Then maybe a special Mother’s Day Tea at the new Museum of the American Revolution is in order. Does she have a passion for Latin fare? A luxurious brunch at Richard Sandoval’s Aqimero will transport her south of the border with plenty of mimosas for the road. Here are our picks for the best restaurants for Mother’s Day 2017.

Mother’s Day Tea The new Museum of the American Revolution celebrates famous revolutionary women (and your mom) with a Mother’s Day Tea. The elegant afternoon affair will include fresh scones with currants and lemon zest (served with clotted cream and jam), petit fours, French macaroons and tea sandwiches in the museum’s Liberty Hall. Once you’re finished, take Mom on a tour of the museum’s exhibits. Each child in attendance will be given a keepsake miniature stitch sampler. Tickets cost $45 for adults, $35 for youth ages 6 to 17

and $10 for children 5 and under. 1 p.m.-3 p.m. Museum of the American Revolution 101 S. Third St. amrevmuseum.org

Boozy brunch If your mom wants to get a little tipsy on her special day, take her to the swanky Aqimero at the Ritz Carlton in Center City. The Mother’s Day brunch menu includes endless mimosas, bellinis and bloody marys. Signature dishes like chicken and waffles, huevos rancheros, lobster avocado toast and crab and shrimp enchiladas — all cooked on Aqimero’s wood-burning grill, will help you soak up the booze and make sure you’re not embarrassing the special lady. There will also be a seafood raw bar and hot carving station. The brunch is $125 per person. 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Aqimero

Prix-fixe perfection You can never go wrong with a hearty Italian meal, and the cozy atmosphere at Little Nonna’s will make it a day to remember. The three-course brunch for Mother’s Day includes options like eggs in purgatory (baked eggs in San Marzano gravy), French toast (lemonpistachio ricotta with mixed berries and toasted pizzelles) and early morning bucatini (cacio e pepe, poached egg, smoked bacon and ramp leaves). the South Philly breakfast with Nonna’s meatballs, provolone, garlic rabe and pepperoni marinara served with either rosemary fries or side salad. Remember to save room for dessert: cannoli, tiramisu and seasonal sorbets round out the menu. 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Little Nonna’s 1234 Locust St. littlenonnas.com

Songs and Sushi Perhaps your mom wants to sing for her supper? Why not take her out for a Sunday evening of karaoke and Japanese food at Yakitori Boy? You can choose from singing in the public bar area or even booking a private karaoke room if she’s shy (or a microphone hog). What with belting all of those Whitney Houston classics, you and mom will undoubtedly work up an appetite. Feast on Japanese-style tapas, aka “Japas,” like sushi, sashimi and tempura. There’s also a huge selection of Japanese sakes, beers and cocktails. 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily Yakitori Boy, 211 N. 11th St. yakitoriboy.com

Live your favorite TV shows

Moab, Utah, was the setting for much of “Westworld.” ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES

‘Top Gear’

Being stuck in the real world doesn’t mean you can’t experience where your favorite characters live.

‘The Walking Dead’ Experience the zombie apocalypse with a trip to the South. “The Walking Dead” has been filmed almost entirely in Georgia since Season 1, with many filming locations across the capital city of Atlanta. Visit Rick’s house on Cherokee Avenue, make a trip out to the survivors’ campsite at Bellwood Quarry, and plan a day trip out to Senoia, about 25 miles southeast of Atlanta, for a look at the real small town of Woodbury.

‘Game of Thrones’ Walk in the footsteps of the Wildlings while touring through Iceland on a “Game of Thrones”themed Beyond the Wall experience. The show has filmed in Iceland since Season 2, showcasing places like the lava fields of Dimmuborgir, and Grjótagjá, the small

lava cave that becomes Jon Snow and Ygritte’s love nest. End the tour at the Mývatn Nature Baths before ending up with a night in the Kirkjubær, a hotel that has been converted from a 1925 Protestant chapel.

‘Preacher’ When Seth Rogen introduced fans to Jesse Custer, a man inhabited by the renegade spawn of an angel and a demon, he created a cult following around this Texas-based show. Although the town of Annville, Texas, doesn’t actually exist, Rogen’s followers can get the “Preacher” vibe with a visit to Fort Worth. Having started as a cattle town in the 1800s, it’s preserved that Old West atmosphere where you can still experience an authentic cattle drive twice a day at the historic Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District,

and Philip Jennings, why not go all in with a trip to Nadezhda and Mischa’s real homeland in Russia? Travel All Russia operates all-inclusive small-group and private tours, including arranging visas.

or sip on the Hell’s Half Acre rum at Acre Distilling Co.

‘Outlander’ Step back in time and retrace Claire and Jaime’s journey through the Scottish Highlands in the city that started it all. Inverness is where the storyline began years ago when Claire and her husband ventured out to retrace Frank’s Scottish roots. Uncover your own Scottish ancestry at the Highland Archive Centre, or journey out to Clava Cairns to see the mysterious site that inspired the show’s Craigh na Dun. Stay at the Culloden House for the chance to sleep in the actual battle headquarters used by Bonnie Prince Charlie prior to the battle on Culloden Moor during

the Jacobite uprising in 1745-46.

‘Everest Rescue’ Fans of this six-part miniseries don’t need to put their lives at risk to get a memorable Everest experience. A three-day trek in Solukhumbu, Nepal, (sherpa guide and porter included) from the Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla is all it takes for thrillseekers to be face-to-face with the giant mountain herself at the Hotel Everest View. This 13,000-foot-elevation hotel is the highest in the world, and offers the best accommodations for adventuring (safely!) around the foothills of Mount Everest.

‘Homeland’ When Carrie Mathison

moved to Berlin in Season 5 to work as head of security for Otto Düring, she gave fans an entirely new city to explore. Check out Peter Quinn’s hiding spot on Revaler Strasse, grab a bite to eat at Restaurant Grosz AT Kurfürstendamm or at Café Godot, and hold a clandestine meeting on a park bench in Monbijoupark to get the full “Homeland” experience. Stay at the Maritim Hotel Berlin (the real filming location for Carrie and Otto’s Lebanon hotel in Episode 2) or at the Hotel Adlon Kempinski.

‘The Americans’ While you could easily hop a plane or train and head up to the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C., to enter the fantasy world of Elizabeth

Despite the fact that the center of this petite Italian village is car-free, Courmayeur acts as the perfect base for living out “Top Gear” fantasies. The town is situated at the bottom of Mont Blanc, and is the official starting point of the Maserati range’s custom test drives. Beginning at the swanky Maserati Mountain Lounge on the via Roma, car enthusiasts can book a time to test out the Italian brand’s best, including the new Levante.

‘Westworld’ The futuristic Westernthemed park Westworld may be the stuff of fantasies, but the setting for this hit show is quite real. Many of the show’s exterior shots were taken in Moab, Utah, around Dead Horse Point State Park and Canyonlands National Park. Plan a road trip along State Route 128 to retrace the route the tourists took to enter the park. (The film crew attached a train car set to a flatbed truck and drove it up and down Route 128 to film the scenes.) Book a yurt in Dead Horse Point State Park to see the background from the Man in Black’s perspective.

See the other Disneyland Here’s your guide to doing California’s biggest theme park without kids.

Disneyland in Anaheim is a short drive from Los Angeles, and a portal to a strange utopia where you can experience life like a child, even if you don’t bring a child with you. In fact, don’t bring a child with you. You’re now an adult who can do whatever you want, and this makes Disneyland a very different and wonderful place. Go on a weekday If you absolutely hate lines and crowds, check Is It Packed before making Disneyland plans. The best days to go are Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and if you can wait until the crowd prediction is

“Ghost Town,” you’ll have the best chance for very short wait times. Insider Tip: The Disneyland app will give you real-time updates of wait times for all attractions so you can better plan your day. Getting there You can also take the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner down from Union Station in Downtown L.A., which is a beautiful train ride, and there’s a shuttle from the Anaheim station straight to the parks. First things first Your first stop before entering the park should always be Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar at the Disneyland Hotel. This is a short walk from Downtown Disney, and a pretty excellent spot to prepare for your adventures. Depending on the drinks being ordered, there are special effects that happen throughout the bar.

You don’t need a kid to have fun at Disneyland. SHEWBRIDGE, FLICKR

After a drink or two, make the short walk to Downtown Disney and jump straight onto the

tram to the park. Once in Tomorrowland, check your app for wait times. (I’m a huge Space Mountain fan, so I get a FastPass before riding anything else to ensure my peace of mind.) With your favorite FastPass secured, it’s time to mill about the rest of the park. Buzz Lightyear is a fun way to get competitive with your friends. No grudges in the Happiest Place on Earth! Which rides? Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean have very fast-moving lines that are cool and shady if it’s sunny, or you can ride Indiana Jones as a Single Rider to skip the line. You might not get to sit with your friends, but you’re not a kid, so you don’t care. Winnie the Pooh is a psychedelic winner of a ride. And if it’s melting hot out there, you can put your electronics in a free locker by Splash Mountain, get soaking wet, and go get a Dole Whip at the Enchanted Tiki Room in Adventureland. This is like the PG version of the bar you started out at, and it has a beautiful variety of animatronic birds who sing slightly culturally uncomfortable songs. Is it 4 p.m. yet? If

so, Carthay Circle has opened and it’s calling your name to the other park. Unlike Disneyland, California Adventure has alcohol. You can have a late lunch in the beautiful art deco second floor, but the bar downstairs is the place to have a snack and a beverage. They have a robust California wine and beer selection, and sometimes they have

The Dole Whip is essential. FLASHPHASE, FLICKR

deviled eggs. Who doesn’t love a deviled egg? After spending some time at Carthay, go ride Soaring Over the World over and over, as many times as possible if there is no line. If you ask nicely, they’ll let you sit in the first row dead center, so you really get the full effect of being a time and space-traveling hang glider. Insider Tip: I take my shoes off when riding this

ride, which is a contagious thing to do. When people see you take your shoes off, they do it too. Everyone loves soaring like a bird! Last call The last stop of the day is a quick Single Rider jaunt through Radiator Springs Racers in Cars Land. And then what? Whatever you want! You’re an adult! At this point you might be pretty tired and cranky, but if you’re not a huge baby you might want to go ride all the rest of the rides and watch the nightly parade, which is pretty excellent, and might make you cry. Post-Disney Remember how you parked at Downtown Disney? A great way to get your parking mostly validated is to go see a movie at the AMC. It’s also a good way to make sure you’re 100 percent sober by the time you get on the road. Sometimes, if you go to a late showing, all the parking attendants have left by the time the movie’s over and you can just drive out of the lot like an absolute winner. If you’re hungry for dinner, there are a lot of good options around the park or a short ride away, such as The Packing House, which is essentially a fun, fancy food court.

In addition to his ability to play multiple defensive positions, the Eagles will no doubt utilize Nate Gerry on special teams as well — as the Cornhusters did.

When the Eagles selected Nate Gerry in the fifth round of last month’s NFL draft, the tickers on NFL Network and ESPN listed him as a safety. That’s the position where he lined up when he played on Nebraska’s defense for four seasons, and where he accumulated 13 interceptions over his last three. But when the Eagles announced him as their selection they called him a linebacker. The 6-foot-2, 218 pounder also plays special teams. And was the Huskers’ backup long snapper. An athletic juggernaut, Gerry can do almost anything he’s asked, and in today’s NFL, that’s exactly what is needed. “I was pretty openminded,” Gerry said after being drafted the 184th pick. “With my agent, we didn’t really know where I was going to go. … A lot of teams wanted me to make that transition to line-

backer, but a lot of them saw me at safety, so it kind of came down to who was left on the board and who was up at next pick. I’m very excited. I think the linebacker role is going to fit me really well, especially in the scheme that we’re running.” Like the Panthers got

“I know the transition’s going to be pretty easy for me.” Eagles’ Nate Gerry, on switching from safety to linebacker

in running back and slot receiver Christian McCaffrey, and the Cleveland Browns got in defensive back and linebacker Jabrill Peppers, the Eagles are clamoring over the athleticism Gerry brings, and the multitude of contributions he can bring to the squad. More and more, position is mattering less and less. Gerry won a state title in the 100- and 200-meter runs in his native South Dakota and played second base and catcher on the baseball diamond where he was all-state. The chance to play big-

time college football in the Big 10 is what made him decide to choose that sport over his high school specialty and favorite in baseball. His natural abilities will pair well with a work ethic that Gerry is quite proud of. “I was always born and raised to just be able to put my head down and go to work,” Gerry, who once collected 15 tackles as a safety against Iowa, said. “So for me, it’s just being able to do the little things right. That came to just watching a lot of film outside of practice and then being able to transition the things that I had taken from the film onto the practice field. And just being able to put my nose down and go to work every week and then you know just benefiting off of that.” The Eagles VP of player personnel couldn’t agree more and supports defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz’ plan to play him at linebacker. “To me, he wasn’t just a safety that could play down in the box,” Joe Douglas said. “He was an athletic guy that could range all over the field, and I think you’re going to see that range even more so at the linebacker position.”

On the Live Breathe Futbol podcast last week, Philadelphia Union (14-4) striker C.J. Sapong made a statement prior to last Saturday’s match against the New York Red Bulls (5-5-1). “I still need a hat trick,â€? Sapong said. “I haven’t had one in the regular season in my career.â€? Heading into Saturday, the Union were riding a 16-game winless streak dating back to August 2016. As a team they netted just eight goals in eight matches and a matchup with their bitter rivals didn’t seem like the time to buck the trend. But in the darkest of times for the club, Sapong delivered on his word. Sapong netted three goals in the contest, and

his first career hat trick, as the Union notched a 3-0 shutout of the Red Bulls. His third was a no-doubter. He placed the ball low on a penalty kick into the corner of the net, completely fooling the goalie as he dabbed in celebration for the Union fans in attendance.

in goals on the year with seven. But Sapong is much happier to get the win and to erase the winless streak which has been such a heavy weight on him and his teammates. “You can’t put it into words,â€? Sapong said. “It’s been a long, hardworking road for us to get this win. It’s a beautiful thing. We’re going to let this marinate, but then we still have a lot of climbing to do.â€? Climb they must. The Union are still at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings with just seven points. They’ll face D.C. United (3-4-2) on the road on Saturday where they’ll attempt to keep their momentum alive. â€œI want to thank our fans, the ones that stuck with us now through this tough time,â€? Union manager Jim Curtin said. “It’s difficult. Now you can see when a team has confidence, it’s pretty fun to watch. The building was loud. It was electric. And for the fans that have bailed on us, we understand and we will work hard to win you back. This is a good first step.â€? Saturday’s match will air at 7 p.m. on TCN.

Is Eagles’ Graham planning to hold out training camp? If you look at the stat book, Brandon Graham had an average year as a pass-rusher for the Eagles in 2016. If you watched him play, whether it was for one game or for all 16, he was an undeniable force on the Birds defensive line. Pro Football Focus ranked Graham as the ninth best player in football last season, with 5.5 sacks only telling part of the story of a player who pressure quarterbacks with exceptional regularity. So it comes as no surprise that the Philly Inquirer’s Jeff McLane is reporting that Graham wants to get paid. He deserves it, with just $6.5 million coming his way in 2017. Fellow Eagles passrushers Vinny Curry (five years, $42 million) and Fletcher Cox (six years,

DON’T LET THE BEDBUGS

$102 million) have been paid handsomely by Philly over the last two seasons. Graham’s contract makes him the 28th highest paid defensive end. “Can’t talk about contract stuff right now,” Graham told McLane, neither denying nor confirming the report. The Eagles could choose to cut him after this season and save $5.5 million — so there seems to be a crossroads as the Eagles have drafted Derek Barnett and also signed Chris Long. Philly is holding voluntary workouts and has been for a few weeks ahead of rookie minicamp starting this weekend, and voluntary minicamps beginning on May 23 for veteran players, and according to McLane, Graham will likely stay away for a while as he contemplates his next move.

Brandon Graham is still under contract through the 2018 season.

But is McClane’s report accurate? NFL reporter Jason La Canfora says it’s not, tweeting: “Reports of Brandon Graham contract dispute are unsubstantiated. Am told he’s with his family in Detroit and eager for the season to start” The Eagles are not in stellar shape cap-wise and could be forced to

make some tough decisions on players like Jason Kelce and Ryan Mathews anyway. Graham forcing their hand would make things a bit more difficult. Whether Graham shows up for full team practices on May 23 will tell a lot about his intentions. EVAN MACY
