President Donald Trump on Thursday called ousted FBI chief James Comey a “showboat” and “grandstander,” but its acting leader contradicted the president and promised the agency’s probe into possible Trump campaign ties to Russia would proceed with vigor. Trump, facing Democratic accusations that he fired Comey on Tuesday to hinder the FBI investigation into alleged med-
dling by Russia in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, said he would have taken the action even without a recommendation to do so by the two top Justice Department officials. That ran counter to previous administration explanations of Comey’s dismissal. REUTERS

MORMON CHURCH CUTS TIES WITH BOY SCOUT

The Mormon church said on Thursday it is no longer participating in two Boy Scouts of America programs for older teenagers, a change that will affect more than 185,000 boys in the United States and Canada. Beginning January 2018, the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is cutting ties with the Boy Scouts’ Varsity and Venturing programs, youth development activities
aimed at preparing young men ages 14 to 18 for adulthood. This announcement came months after the Boy Scouts began accepting transgender boys into the program. But the church said this did not influence its decision to pull out of the programs. “Instead, young men activities will focus on spiritual, social, physical and intellectual goals outlined by the Church,” the church said in a statement. U.S. Homeland Security officials met with major U.S. airlines and a trade group to discuss the impact of possibly expanding a ban on large electronic gadgets on planes to flights from some European airports, three sources briefed on the meeting said. The afternoon meeting included high level executives from Delta Air Lines Inc, United Airlines Inc, American Airlines Group Inc and
trade group Airlines for America, the sources said. They requested anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the confidential meeting. In March, the United States announced laptop restrictions on flights originating from 10 airports including in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey because of fears that a concealed bomb could be installed in electronic devices taken onto aircraft. A New York City-born former al Qaeda member who plotted to attack a commuter railroad will be released in three months after spending 8½ years in custody because of the extensive intelligence he provided U.S. investigators after his arrest, prosecutors said. Bryant Neal Vinas, 34, pleaded guilty in 2009 after his capture by Pakistani authorities in 2008. At a hearing in Brooklyn on Thursday, U.S.
District Judge Nicholas Garaufis sentenced him to time served plus three months, according to the U.S. attorney’s office in Brooklyn. Vinas, a U.S. Army veteran, traveled to Pakistan in 2007 and eventually joined the militant group al Qaeda, which provided him weapons and explosives training, authorities said. In 2008, he participated in a rocket attack against a U.S. base across the Afghanistan border. REUTERS

If you’ve never sung Cellino & Barnes’ “800888-8888” jingle when it comes on your TV, then you’re probably not a real New York resident — nor may you get the chance to earn that moniker as the law firm’s namesake lawyers seem to be on the outs. Civil documents filed Wednesday in New York State Supreme Court show that Ross Cellino Jr. is in the process of suing his partner, Stephen Barnes, to dissolve the firm, according to Buffalo TV station WIVB News 4. Another Buffalo station, WGRZ, said the sealed court documents show that Barnes will

Connors, declined to give a comment to either station regarding the lawsuit. The current — and seemingly coming-to-
an-end — incarnation of Cellino & Barnes can trace its roots back to 1958, when Cellino’s father, Ross Sr., founded Cellino & Likoudis.

Cellino & Barnes covers suits for everything from auto accidents and wrongful deaths to truck accidents, medical malpractice and even
dog bites and defective products, among many others. In addition to having locations across New York in Buffalo, Rochester, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Long Island, the firm also practices in California, with offices in Los Angeles, San Diego, Oakland and San Francisco. According to its website, the firm currently has a roster of more than 50 attorneys, and its personal injury lawyers have recovered more than $2 billion for its clients. Cellino & Barnes did not respond to requests for comment. However, the Twittersphere certainly had a reaction to the news of the firm’s potential end that is akin to the retirement of infamous New York City subway advertiser Dr. Jonathan Zizmor.
Investigations continue after two bodies found in Central Park waters within 24 hours Within 24 hours, two decomposing male bodies were found in two bodies of water in Central Park. The first body was discovered by a park worker around noon on Tuesday in the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, The New York Times reported. The body was naked and badly decomposed to the point that investigators could not obtain fingerprints for identification, but they estimated he had been in his 20s or 30s. They believe he had been in the reservoir for at least a month. The second body, which was clothed only in pants and did not appear to be in same state of decomposition as the prior body, broke through the surface of the pond around 7:20 a.m. Wednesday. Officials recovered an ID on the man estimated to have been in his 30s, but they have not released his name. He may have been in the water

Neither body had signs of trauma, officials said. “There’s no signs of criminality as of now to make this anything other than coincidence,” Robert Boyce, chief of detectives for the NYPD, told the Times. The first body was autopsied on Wednesday, but there has not been any conclusion made as to the cause of his death. The second was expected to have further examination on Thursday. NIKKI M. MASCALI

Amtrak to hire private company to manage Penn Station concourse “The status quo is no longer sustainable,” Amtrak President Wick Moorman said.
Amtrak said on Thursday that it plans to hire a private company to manage the concourse-level areas it controls in New York’s outdated and overcrowded Penn Station. Amtrak will create a new development entity tasked with selecting a management firm for its concourse areas, President Wick Moorman said at a New York State Assembly committee hearing in Manhattan. The Long Island Rail Road and NJ Transit — which control their own concourse sections under long-term leases with Amtrak, the landlord — will also be asked to oversee the new entity and use it to coordinate operations
among all three railroads, Moorman said. “The status quo is no longer sustainable,” Wick told committee members. The national passenger rail company has been under scrutiny after two recent derailments, for which it was at fault, disrupted travel for hundreds of thousands of commuters. Those and other disturbances have drawn attention to problems on the station’s concourse-level areas, which can quickly become crowded with delayed passengers when one disruption ripples to other trains. Last month, the station was crammed with commuters after a power outage. Chaos broke out because of unfounded rumors that someone was shooting a gun. Thirteen people were injured. Part of the problem
Amtrak has stated that a detailed plan of this summer’s Penn Station track closures will be released next week. GETTY IMAGES
is growth in the region. Penn Station, the busiest U.S. transit hub, now handles double the number of trains it did when Amtrak took it over from bankrupt private operator
Penn Central Transportation Co. in 1976, Moorman said. Separately, Amtrak is also addressing track problems with a new program to expedite long-planned
repairs that would otherwise take years to complete. Large sections of Penn Station track will be taken offline for weeks at a time this summer. The derailments “high-
light the vulnerability and the fragility of Penn Station,” Moorman said, apologizing again for delays and disruptions. About half the trains that roll through the station are operated by the LIRR, which leases Amtrak’s rails along with NJ Transit. Amtrak is working with LIRR and NJ Transit to figure out precisely how tracks will be taken offline and other trains rerouted this summer. A detailed plan of outages is expected next week, Moorman said. The most complex, disruptive jobs that require more tracks to be taken out of service at one time will be performed at night, he said. Amtrak is planning to issue alerts during the summer months to keep customers updated. REUTERS DOMESTIC NEWS

Who you gonna call? Dinosaur named for ‘Ghostbusters’ beast Zuul The dinosaur’s name was inspired by its skull similarities to the head of the “Ghostbusters” monster, according to Royal Ontario Museum paleontologist David Evans. REUTERS
It was more of a leg buster, but scientists have named a spiky, tanklike dinosaur that wielded a sledge-hammer tail after the fanciful beast Zuul from the blockbuster film “Ghostbusters” that menaced Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and friends. The scientists on Tuesday described fossils unearthed in the northern Montana badlands of the four-legged, plant-eating dinosaur called Zuul crurivastator that was about 20 feet long, weighed 2-1/2 tons and lived 75 million years ago. Zuul belonged to a group of Cretaceous Period dinosaurs called ankylosaurs that were among the most heavily armored land animals ever. They were clad in bony armor from the snout to the end of the tail, often with spikes and a tail club that could be used to smash the legs of predators like the Tyrannosaurus rex cousin Gorgosaurus that lived alongside Zuul. Zuul is one of the most complete and bestpreserved ankylosaurs ever found, including rare soft tissue, paleontologist Victoria Arbour of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto said. Its fossils included skin impressions and keratinous sheaths on the tail spikes. In the 1984 movie, Zuul (pronounced ZOOL) was described as an ancient Near East demigod and appeared as a big,

horned, vaguely doglike monster with glowing red eyes, possessing Sigourney Weaver’s body. “The skull of the new dinosaur has a short, rounded snout, gnarly forehead and two sets of horns projecting backwards from behind the eyes, just like Zuul,” Evans said. Aykroyd, the Ontarioborn “Ghostbusters” star
and co-writer, appeared in a video released by the museum alongside the dinosaur’s skull, holding a photo of the movie beast. “We’re so honored that the Royal Ontario Museum would accord the name of this magnificent creature with the appellation that we called our ‘terror dog’ in the movie, and that is Zuul, Z-U-U-L,” Aykroyd said. Early humans co-existed in Africa with humanlike species 300,000 years ago The dinosaur’s tail, about 10 feet long, was an intimidating defensive weapon. “The menacing, spiked tail of Zuul is by far the coolest part of the animal,” Evans said. “It has a wicked series of large spikes at the base of the tail, then a series of elongated, peaked spines that run the length of the tail club, and it ends in a massive, expanded club.” The research was published in the journal Royal Society Open Science.

Trump attacks on fired FBI chief meet resistance; Russia probe proceeds In Trump’s first interview since firing Comey on Tuesday, he appeared to try to underscore that Comey’s dismissal was about his performance at the Federal Bureau of Investigation and not about the Russia probe. Trump faces accusations from Democrats that he fired Comey to hinder the FBI investigation into U.S. intelligence agency allegations that Russia meddled in the 2016 presidential election to benefit Trump. The probe has hung over Trump’s presidency since he took office in January and threatens to overwhelm his policy priorities. “He’s a showboat. He’s a grandstander,” Trump told NBC News. “The FBI has been in turmoil. You know that, I know that, everybody knows that.” Trump’s characterization was odds with that of the top Republican and Democratic lawmakers on the Senate Intelligence Committee. At a hearing on Thursday, the Republican chairman of the panel, Richard Burr, and the top Democrat, Mark Warner, praised Comey. Warner said he was offended at Trump’s remarks. Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, testifying in place of Comey, contradicted Trump’s appraisal of turmoil at the FBI, saying Comey had “broad support” from the rank and file “and still does to this day,” McCabe said. Officials familiar with internal FBI politics said Trump’s action has hurt morale and would make it hard to attract and retain staff. Trump had been ex-
pected to soon visit FBI headquarters, but MSNBC reported that plan had been thrown out after agency officials told the White House that Trump would not be greeted warmly following his firing of Comey. Former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers is being considered as a candidate to replace Comey, a senior White House official said. The nominee must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. McCabe promised to tell senators of any White House meddling into the agency’s probe on Russia. Democrats have called for a special counsel to look into the matter. “It is my opinion and belief that the FBI will continue to pursue this investigation vigorously and completely,” McCabe told the senators. Trump said in the NBC television interview that he never pressured Comey into dropping the FBI probe, adding: “If Russia did anything, I want to know that.” Trump said there was no “collusion between me and my campaign and the Russians,” but that “the Russians did not affect the vote.” His explanation of why he fired Comey ran counter to previous administration explanations of Comey’s dismissal. One of the best lines from the classic movie “Jawsâ€? comes as the sheriff is chumming for the killer shark, which has been snacking on island residents like Snickers bars. Heaving yet another bloody scoop of fish bits off of their trawler, he sees the monster come into view — all black eyes and jagged teeth — and says to the grizzled captain, “You’re going to need a bigger boat.â€? That’s good advice for all the opponents of Donald Trump right now — Democrats, Republicans and independents alike — anyone who hopes somehow this president will be yanked from his office ahead of his time. I’m not saying you’re right or wrong to think that way, it’s just a bigger task than you may imagine. Oh sure, you’ve watched this disastrous firing of the FBI director. Team Trump has rolled out more versions of “what happenedâ€? than a teenager explaining how the family Toyota

wound up in the shopping mall fountain. Staffers have contradicted each other, the president and common sense. They’ve swung the door wide open for critics who say it’s all about quashing the investigation into Trump’s possible Russian ties. On top of which, the White Housers managed to somehow let the Russians take photos of the
president gripping and grinning with the Kremlin’s ambassador the very same week — in the Oval Office, no less! And just to complete the trifecta, a new poll shows the White House may need a second basement to hold the president’s approval rating because it’s crazy low. All of this has triggered frothing comparisons to President Nixon from Trump’s foes who think he too might not make it through this full term in office. But don’t bet on it. The probe into the Russian affair has lasted ten months, and while it may produce some evidence directly implicating the president in wrongdoing, so far it definitively has not. And yes, the new president has had some embarrassing stumbles; and yes, he plays fast and loose with the truth. But he proved repeatedly in the election, he knows how to survive ‌ and now he knows his enemies will need a much bigger boat to pull him from the political waters.

Uber adds trucking brokerage firm amid long-haul push Uber Technologies Inc. hired the team behind a Chicago transportation brokerage last fall as part of an effort to break into the long-haul trucking industry. All five employees from 4Front Logistics joined Uber in November, said an Uber spokeswoman, who added that Uber did not pay anything for the company. Brokerages such as 4Front Logistics connect manufacturers and retailers that are shipping goods with truck owners and fleets. The deal comes as Uber is vying to apply the logistics expertise it has gained ferrying passengers in countries around the world to the trucking industry. That strategy puts it in the middle of a large, highly fragmented

industry of freight brokers who match cargo with truck operators. Uber Chief Executive Travis Kalanick posted a photo on Twitter on Sunday of a large white truck emblazoned with the words “Uber Freight.” In one of Uber’s first public displays of its interest in trucking, Uber last August acquired selfdriving truck startup Otto for $680 million, a deal that is now at the center of a legal battle with Alphabet’s Waymo. Since launching its
push into trucking about a year ago, Uber has been steadily gaining traction, said transportation analyst Jack Atkins of investment bank Stephens Inc. “They are being very active building up their scale in the brokerage market, both in terms of going after customers but also making sure they have the capacity to fulfill that,” he said. Uber, along with Otto, has over the past several months acquired a fleet of its own trucks to test its technology, pitched its services to independent truck owners and trucking associations, and built out a host of other technologies involving mapping and tracking, which are part of the logistics package for trucking. Djimon Hounsou just had a birthday. When we spoke to the acclaimed actor a couple weeks ago for his new blockbuster “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword,â€? he had recently turned 53. He takes getting older in stride. “As we age in our later years, the celebrations become slightly diluted. You don’t want everyone to remind you how old you’re getting,â€? Hounsou tells us. It’s even worse these days. “Now we have social media, and people post about it whether you want it or not. ‘It’s your birthday! You’re going to celebrate!’ Why are you

happy I’m so old? Complicating it is his past. Born in the African republic of Benin, he lived in poverty, even after he emigrated in his teens to Lyon, France. “I was born in a place where wishing someone a happy birthday is unthinkable. When you come from a Third World country, the need to feed one’s self on a daily basis is a constant challenge. It doesn’t leave room to fantasize about tomorrow or other things, he says. Hounsou’s life got markedly better. A chance encounter with a photographer led to a modeling career, then an acting one. Once Steven Spielberg cast him as Cinque, leader of the mutiny on an America-bound slave ship in 1997’s “Amistad, his career turned into what it is now: a mixture of serious fare (“In America and “Blood Diamond, both of which netted him Oscar nominations) and blockbusters, like “Guardians of the Galaxy and “Furious 7. “King Arthur is his latest huge spectacle. He plays Bedivere, the wise and loyal confidant of our film’s s t r a p ping hero (Charlie Hunnam). Still, even when Hounsou does $150 million

For him, the tale — in which Arthur has to battle a despotic king (Jude Law) who rules through fear — reminded him of the history of his home continent. “It’s one of those stories I came across when I was growing up. Making it new Another aspect of this “King Arthurâ€? that appealed to Hounsou was how diverse it was. There’s a mage played by a woman (Astrid Berges-Frisbey) and the Knights of the Round Table are a multicultural lot, including men of color and of dierent countries. “It’s important to reect our times, to this contemporary period in our existence, to have a social impact,â€? he says. “Here, for the ďŹ rst time we had an amazing, diverse cast. That speaks to the way the Western world likes to view itself sometimes.â€?
but those are the ones you see more of, because they go to enormous lengths to prove and to affirm their existence, to affirm their place on the throne.
And those can easily turn into dictatorships. Hounsou doesn’t think leaders should pursue such positions only for the sake of power.
He compares it to people who come to Hollywood only to be famous. “The vocation should be about the passion you have for the job, the passion you have for executing it. Because once it’s done, it’s done, you move onto the next thing. “If you come to Hollywood to be famous right off the bat, you’re starting off on the wrong foot, he says. “If you’re going to Hollywood because you’ve been a great performer, a great actor, a great actress, a talented human being, then it’s a proper vocation.

In ‘I Love Dick,’ Kevin Bacon gives a warm welcome to the female gaze His character is pretty swoonworthy. JENNIFER LOGUE @jenniferlogue
jennifer.logue@metro.us
They say you should never judge a book by its cover (or a TV show by its title for that matter), but it’s kind of hard not to be curious about what “I Love Dick” is all about. Thankfully, the new Amazon series, based on Chris Kraus’ 1997 book of the same name, makes its debut today. Kevin Bacon stars as Dick, a rough-aroundthe-edges artist and local celebrity in the closeknit arts community of Marfa, Texas. Chris (Kathryn Hahn), a struggling New York filmmaker, accompanies her husband Sylvere (Griffin Dunne) to Dick’s artist residency and immediately becomes obsessed with the sculpturemaking cowboy. As her muse, Dick awakens an artistic fire in Chris that is sexy, electric and at times, a little awkward. But Bacon insists that Dick is way more than an object of desire for Chris. “One could make the assumption that the

male characters are going to be looked at from a feminist view because it was an all-female writers group [on the project],” he says. “What the writers have created is a well-drawn, complex male character who, by the end of the show,
moves beyond being the object to being a vulnerable, confused and complicated man.” The 58-year-old actor also notes that some men might be “frightened” by being the subject of the female gaze. “Sometimes men
think that the foundation of feminism is anger and that’s a mistake,” he reveals. “When you look at this show, I think that what you see is a lot of love. Women are often more in touch with love than men are.” Well if you’re looking
for love, you’ve come to the right place — just not in the way you think. Chris begins giving life to her infatuation with Dick through a series of erotic letters she writes to him, which she of course, reads out loud to her husband, adding a
long lost fire to their own marriage. The out-of-thebox menage a trois may seem a little complicated at first, but once you get to know these irresistible characters, you too will love Dick. “I Love Dick” premieres today on Amazon.

Things you never knew about drones

The Intrepid’s new exhibit about the aircraft is the first of its kind. EVA KIS @thisiskis

What’s as likely to be found on battlefields as under Christmas trees? Drones have certainly earned their controversial reputation, with some seeing only the military’s preferred method of targeting enemies overseas, and others just wanting to know how much faster their Amazon Prime shipments will arrive. But there’s so much more to this complicated and fascinating technology, which finally has its first major museum exhibit aboard the Intrepid Museum. “I wanted to show people that drones are not new,” says Eric Boehm, co-curator of “Drones: Is the Sky the Limit?” That said, with the technology evolving so rapidly, “if we’d opened this exhibit next year, it won’t look anything like this.” Though history forms the beginning of “Drones,” the exhibit uncovers new and promising uses, with tons of antique models, a replica of a military drone operator’s station, Lady Gaga’s “flying dress” Volantis and prototypes for the Uber of the sky. (You can also, of course, try to fly a drone.) We rounded up the exhibit’s 10 most fascinating facts.
practice until they’re shot down. They’re capable of more nimble and sophisticated maneuvers mimicking newer Patriot missiles.
“Drones: Is the Sky the Limit?” is now open. SVETLANA JOVANOVIC
1. Drones date back to the Civil War Drones — defined as an unmanned aircraft capable of independent flight — have actually been around for over 150 years. “That caught me by surprise as well,” says Boehm. Back in 1862, Union soldiers used observation balloons to track Confederate troops, and tested using drones to drop bombs (unsuccessfully). The U.S. government also used camera kites to spy on Cuba during the Spanish American War in the 1898. 2. Pilotless flight has been a goal since airplanes were invented “When World War I came around, the airplane was new, and already they’re taking the pilot out,” says Boehm. One of the first experimental pilotless flyers was actually dubbed the aerial torpedo. “It’s kind of crude, the first version of cruise missiles.”
3. Marilyn made drones Greeting visitors to “Drones” is a photo of 16-year-old Norma Jeane Mortenson, aka Marilyn Monroe, from 1942, assembling radio-controlled Denny planes that had been invented for hobbyists at California’s Radioplane Co. “Then the war broke out, and we didn’t have leisure endeavors anymore; everything was for the war effort,” Boehm says.

to spot schools of fish. “But commercial fishing vessels don’t have a runway,” Boehm points out, “so it has a very novel way of recovery.” A GPS locator guides the drone to clothesline itself using a hook on its wing, no water retrieval necessary. 5. A few lucky F-16s get to fly again In the end, even the mightiest fighter jets are hauled off to the scrapyard like so much other recycling. But a lucky few are retrofitted into drones and used for target
6. Drones are saving lives in NYC right now Eliminating unnecessary risk to people is one of drone technology’s main goals, and not just on the battlefield. The Fire Department of New York is already using a drone to assess fires, with the hope that infrared technology will eventually firefighters them see if there’s someone trapped inside before sending a crew into a burning building. 7. Lady Gaga has her own drone company Remember the herd of drones during Gaga’s Super Bowl halftime show? That’s just the latest in her tech ventures. In fact, Gaga is so gaga over technology that she has her own company, TechHaus, which designed the revolutionary flying dress Volantis. “Nobody ever really designed a drone for an occupant solely to be a passenger,” Boehm notes. 8. Farming goes high-tech Drones are helping farmers, whose profit margins tend to be razor-thin, manage their fields more
efficiently in several ways, from helping to distribute pesticides to gauging the acidity of the soil in large fields — which can vary hugely from plot to plot — to help them plant a more productive crop.

9. Drones are the new hurricane hunters Airplanes must stay close to the top of a hurricane due to the rough winds, but the data is at the bottom. Drones can handle the turbulence, doing vital work to improve predictions and know when an evacuation is needed. 10. You can major in drones Bard College has the nation’s first Center for the Study of the Drone, which has partnered with the Intrepid to keep the information kiosk at the end of the exhibit updated with the latest developments in the drone world.

What do white people really think of ‘Dear White People?’ There’s much to learn from the Netflix series.
think of the show, now? I thought it would be nice to write a satirical thing about it, but it turns out, the few people I talked to had some thoughtful responses about the show and the effect it had on them.
RACHAEL VAUGHAN CLEMMONS @MetroNewYork
rachael.clemmons@metro.us
“Dear White People” is a very good show — stylish, biting, and firmly planted in the here and now. But there are a handful of bums on the internet who find the very idea of the series to be racist in and of itself. In February, Netflix released a 30-second teaser for Justin Simien’s brainchild. The TV series — which went into production on Netflix sometime after the 2013 premiere of “Dear White People,” the film — focuses on a group of black students at the fictional Winchester University and their experience with the microaggressions of daily racism — and what happens when enough is enough. In the teaser, over images of cheery caucasians, we hear the voice of Sam, our wiley
It was uncomfortable at times

protagonist, denouncing the use of blackface. “Dear White People: Here’s a list of acceptable Halloween costumes. Pirate. Slutty nurse... Top of the list of unacceptable costumes? Me.” Then, we cut to a party where white people are wearing blackface as casually as Miley Cyrus rode a literal wrecking ball in the 2013 video for “Wrecking
Ball.” Afterward, alt-right trolls got angry. They launched a Twitter campaign to #BoycottNetflix. The internet was filled with ignorant, misguided responses from people across Trump’s America. “Dear White people,” one Twitter user wrote. “Boycott Netflix and their anti-White proganda.” “Netflix is totally RAC-
IST against whites... ” another read. On one hand, being preemptively offended about something is quite a fine line to walk. Especially when you’ve never been subjugated to actual racism. On the other hand, do people believe this stuff ? When the full first season appeared on Netflix, I wondered — what do white people
“I think there’s so much that’s uncomfortable about it,” says Will, 30, an actor. “I was talking to somebody recently, somebody who did not watch the entire show,” he continues. “And this person who is also a white person was saying like, ‘I couldn’t dive into it because I really want my entertainment to be escapist.’ I don’t really subscribe to that,” he says. “There’s an element of watching this show that feels like it’s my responsibility to watch it. ”
Colorism runs deep Hilary, a 29-year-old chee-
semonger was surprised to see that colorism is a continual battle. “I’m not really thinking about how white I am all the time,” she offers. “[It] just offers you a different perspective.”
There’s a lot to learn Liz, 30, an engineer, appreciated the storytelling, and also how the show managed to deliver a message without being preachy. “I thought it was really funny, and I feel like it wasn’t overbearing and it wasn’t heavyhanded and I’m more aware than I was before... I think I comprehend more and better than I did previously. But I think they really did a great job with the humor of it all, because, goddamn.” So yeah. Turns out some white people love “Dear White People.” And judging something before you’ve watched or experienced it — well, let’s save that for Patti Lupone.

You might not expect a King Arthur movie to have a character named “Goosefat.” Or salty future Knights of the Round Table who drop “Bollocks!” and “Oy!” From the bland title to the self-important posters, you might not predict “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” would have kinetic foot chases shot with GoPro cameras inches from the actors’ faces, or the token “Here’s the plan” scene done as a lightning-fast flurry of quick cuts and sight gags and one-liners. All this may be less surprising, however, if you knew it was directed by Guy Ritchie. Even then, you might not imagine Guy Ritchie’s “King Arthur” could be so very Guy Ritchie. If only it were “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Mages” all the way through. “Legend of the Sword” is indeed another bloated origin story, with Charlie Hunnam as Arthur before he’s king. The story gets to him raising Excalibur from the stone, then fighting a tyrant (Jude Law) with magical

powers. Sorry if you wanted to see Merlin or Guinevere or Lancelot or Morgan, let alone the Holy Grail. You’ll have to wait for those in the sequels they may never make. On the other hand, Ritchie directs the hell out of it — when he can. As in his undersung “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” he finds creative, eccentric ways to tackle generic set pieces. Most improbably of all, it retains Ritchie’s laddish sense of humor. But Ritchie can only do so much. You can imagine him telling studio
execs he’ll direct a climactic magic sword battle that looks like a “Soulcalibur” duel only if he can call one character “Mischief John.” Despite considerable effort, it only makes us remember that somehow the Arthurian legend hasn’t yielded many decent films, apart from John Boorman’s “Excalibur,” Robert Bresson’s “Lancelot du Lac” and “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” Unlike the fun-suck revisionist “King Arthur” from 13 years ago, though, this one gets a C+ for effort. Derek Jeter will return to Yankee Stadium on Sunday to see his No. 2 retired in Monument Park. With 3,465 career hits, the captain is a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer. GETTY IMAGES

No envelopes, no stamps, no mail carriers involved. Just words from the heart intended for 8 million sets of eyes. On Thursday, just three days before his No. 2 is to be retired within Yankee Stadium’s Monument Park, Derek Jeter published a letter in the Players’ Tribune titled simply, “Thank You, New York.” In it, he chronicles his journey from Kalamazoo, Michigan, to New York City “the city” as he called it, and candidly revealed what his fans meant to him:
“In those difficult moments — those moments that feel unique to New York — you always showed me a sign. All I had to do was look: It was a little girl’s tip of her cap, or a shout from across the street, or a rallying chant from the upper decks of Yankee Stadium that made its way down to the field. Or the support from teammates who taught me about the spirit of this city: That we’re all in this together, and we have to look out for one another. New York, I’ll never forget how you looked out for me.” If there is one thing that I’ve learned throughout my 25 years on this planet, it’s to live under your own flag. Be authentic. Do what you must to ensure a feeling of satisfaction at the end of the day when you lay your head on your pillow to rest.
On a trivial scale, that wasn’t easy to do growing up as a Mets fan on Long Island, surrounded by Yankee pinstripes during the core four’s glory years. Like any regional rivalry, there was a certain amount of resentment toward the Yankees. Some-

WORLD SERIES TITLES WON BY DEREK JETER times it was more jealousy than anything given their overwhelming success of four World Series titles from 1996-2000. But there was something about that shortstop in the Bronx who donned No. 2 that I couldn’t help but admire. Even after his World Series MVP performance against the Mets in 2000.
He was the pretty boy who dated supermodels, but he didn’t act like it. “Get up each day, put on your uniform, go to work, do your best, and don’t make excuses,” Jeter wrote. “That’s all New York ever really asks for. And that’s what I tried to do.” He played the game like a consummate professional, treated it with the utmost respect and matured into a role model for millions of fans around the world. He lived under his own flag. On Sunday, he’ll get the recognition he deserves, taking his rightful place among 21 others within Monument Park. When you think of the things in life that complement each other — those that sometimes cannot exist without the other — what do you think of? There’s peanut butter and jelly, the stars and
stripes, a ball game on a warm summer’s Sunday afternoon. And for many, there’s Derek Jeter and the New York Yankees. While the captain is thanking New York and its fans, his adoring masses will have an opportu-
nity to return the thanks on Sunday evening. My advice for them: take advantage of it. Especially after everything he did for the Yankees organization over two decades. Who knows? He might get a few tips of the cap from Mets fans as well.

Jeter’s top moments with the Yankees tied the series at two games apiece.
The dive If anyone questioned Jeter’s desire to win, he silenced those doubters on July 1, 2004, against the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees were 7.5 games up on the Sox at the time of their meeting at Yankee Stadium as the game wound into extra innings. In the top of the 12th with runners on second and third, Trot Nixon popped up down the left-field line deep into foul territory. Jeter was able to cover all that ground to make the catch and went diving into the stands, bloodying up his face in the process while ending the Red Sox rally. The Yankees won the game in the following inning.
Passing Gehrig Over his 20 years in Major League Baseball, Derek Jeter spun together one of the greatest careers ever by a player wearing Yankee pinstripes, creating many memories in the process. GETTY IMAGES

Jeffrey Maier home run The Yankees were trailing the Baltimore Orioles 4-3 in Game 1 of the ALCS when Jeter came up to bat with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning. He hit a fly ball down the right-field line that looked playable for Orioles outfielder Tony Tarasco, but 11-year-old fan Jeffrey Maier reached over the wall and stole the ball. The call on the field was a home run and stood despite vehement arguing from multiple members of the Orioles. New York would go on to win the game in extra innings, the series and the World Series, their first since 1978.
Starting with a bang After losing Game 3 of the
2000 World Series to give some momentum back to the crosstown rival Mets, Jeter sucked the air out of Shea Stadium with a leadoff home run in Game 4 off Bobby Jones. The Yankees would score one run in each of the first three innings, which was enough to secure a 3-2 win and take a commanding 3-1 series lead. They would win it all in Game 5 with Jeter being awarded the World Series MVP after batting .409 with two home runs and two RBIs.
The flip He had no business to be there, but it’s just what
The throw from Shane Spencer missed the cut-off man and didn’t have enough steam to reach Jorge Posada covering home, but Jeter came streaking in from nowhere, collected the ball and flipped it to Posada, who tagged Giambi on the leg to end the inning and the threat. New York would hold on to win that game, win the following two and advance.
Mr. November An inning after Tino Martinez tied Game 4 of the 2001 World Series against Byung-Hyun
“Everybody’s chanting, ‘Thank you, Derek,’ and I’m thinking ... ‘for what?’” Derek Jeter, on his last-ever game at Yankee Stadium
adds to the mystique around Jeter. Down 2-0 in the bestof-three ALDS to the Oakland Athletics, the Yankees held a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. After Jeremy Giambi singled, Terrence Long ripped a double to right field, which looked destined to score Giambi and tie the game.
Kim and the Diamondbacks, Jeter ended it in the 10th with an opposite-field blast that just cleared the wall. The homer happened just moments after the clock struck midnight on November 1, the first-ever World Series game to be played in the month. The heroics earned Jeter the nickname “Mr. November,” as the Yankees
On Sept. 11, 2009, Jeter became the Yankees’ all-time hits leader with his 2,722nd career hit when he poked a single down the right-field line in the bottom of the third inning against the Baltimore Orioles’ Chad Moeller. Lou Gehrig had held the franchise record for 72 years before Jeter came along.
3,000 In the final series before a seven-game road trip, Jeter entered a July 9, 2011, game needing two hits to hit the 3,000-hit peak. After a single off David Price in the first inning, Jeter added another chapter to his storybook career by collecting No. 3,000 with a solo home run over the left field wall.
A walk-off to say goodbye Sept. 25, 2014, was the last time Jeter took the field in pinstripes and he made it as memorable as his entire career. After blowing a 5-2 lead in the top of the ninth, Jeter took the first pitch from Evan Meek into right for a single, scoring pinchrunner Antoan Richardson from second and walking off the Yankees in style.

Aries A partnership looks promising. You stand to make financial and emotional gains if you change your living arrangements or negotiate a new contract.
Libra You’ve got a handle on whatever comes your way. Indulge in talks and bring about the changes you want to see transpire. Travel and romance are highlighted.
Taurus Talks and travel will lead to discovery. Don’t feel that you must start something on a large scale. Baby steps will lead to longterm stability and satisfaction.
Scorpio Tie up loose ends at work and prepare to walk away with a clear conscience. Spend time doing something that brings you joy or inspires you to make changes.
Gemini Socializing should be scheduled. Getting together with friends or taking part in a challenge will spark an entertaining and informative discussion with someone.
Sagittarius The temperature is rising when it comes to romance. Don’t sit back when you should be making plans to enjoy the company of someone special.
Cancer Get things done. Channel your energy and enthusiasm into helping a cause or the people who mean the most to you. A change in lifestyle will boost your morale.
Capricorn Take a greater interest in your relationships. Striving to keep things equal will be more difficult than anticipated. Ask for suggestions to know where you stand.
Leo A trip or gathering should be planned. You’ll shine if you speak up at events. Sharing your thoughts will motivate yourself and others and will add to your popularity.
Aquarius You’ll enjoy the comforts of home and family. Plan to host a party or make special plans for you and a loved one to spend some alone time.
Virgo Anxiety will turn into anger if you let situations fester. Be honest about the way you feel and what you want to see happen to make life better.
Pisces Don’t make assumptions or get angry without just cause. Dig deep and find out what you need to know before you say something you’ll regret. EUGENIA LAST
