DEPUTY AG TO BRIEF FULL CYBERATTACKS SLOW SENATE ON COMEY FIRING BUT FEARS REMAIN

Deputy U.S. Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will conduct a classified briefing on Thursday for the full U.S. Senate on President Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said. The top Democrat in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, said in a statement he hoped senators would use the briefing to seek the “full truth” about Comey’s dismissal, press Rosenstein “to

make way” for a special prosecutor and ensure the administration preserves and makes public any recordings of his conversations with Comey. Critics have assailed Trump for firing Comey, who was leading the FBI’s probe into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible ties between Moscow and the Trump campaign. REUTERS

BANKS REINFORCE CYBER DEFENSES

Banks have tightened their security systems and increased their surveillance after the global cyber assault on individuals and organizations worldwide. Capitalizing on spying tools believed to have been developed by the U.S. National Security Agency, the “ransomware” attack launched on Friday has infected tens of thousands of computers in 104 countries, putting the financial industry on high alert.

It halted the production lines of a European carmaker and delayed surgical operations in Britain’s National Health Service. Many suspected infections were of Russian computers. Russia’s central bank said it had recorded harmful software being sent en masse to Russian banks but that the attacks had been unsuccessful. Sberbank, the country’s biggest lender, said viruses had not got into its systems. REUTERS

The global WannaCry “ransomware” cyberattack spread more slowly on Monday with no major infections reported, as attention shifted to investment and government policy implications of lax cyber security. The countries most affected by WannaCry were the same as Friday: Russia, Taiwan, Ukraine and India, Avast’s data showed. The number of infections has fallen dramatically

since Friday’s peak when more than 9,000 computers were being hit per hour. By afternoon on the U.S East Coast, new infections had fallen to the low hundreds of machines and continue to decline, Avast said. Earlier on Monday, Chinese traffic police and schools reported they had been targeted as the attack rolled into Asia for the new work week, but no there were no major disruptions. REUTERS

A small plane on Monday crashed on approach near Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, killing two pilots and sparking fires at two buildings that could be seen from New York, the Federal Aviation Administration and local police said. The FAA said the Learjet 35 departed Philadelphia and went down at 3:30 p.m. local time about a quarter mile from the airport in a residential

area in northern New Jersey on approach to Runway One. Carlstadt Police Sergeant John Cleary told reporters the plane hit one building in an industrial or manufacturing area, skidded across a parking lot and broke apart. The flaming debris then set a second building on fire, he said. “The plane was seen listing to its left side, so obviously there was some sort of malfunction,” Cleary said. REUTERS

From prison to commencement speaker, Dorchester native turns his life around After getting out of prison, Kyle Gathers wants to give back so he can help other Dorchester kids follow a better path in life. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

Kyle Gathers never thought he would even get into college, but on Saturday — less than a year after getting out of prison — he was the commencement speaker for Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology’s 109th graduation ceremony. Rather than giving a speech with the message that “we did it, the 31-year-old Dorchester native focused on how much there is still to do when it comes to guiding the young people in our lives. “We all are an inspiration to someone younger than us, he said ahead of the ceremony. “All the support we’ve had in our lives that helped us get to this point, it’s on us to help a child get it, too. Gathers knows how much adults influence a child’s future from personal experience, but the influences on him

With that, he can get a job to support his family — he has a 10-year-old son — and launch the next phase of his life. Franklin police searching for missing Duke college student Michael Doherty, 20, was last seen around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

kristin.toussaint@metro.us

Franklin police are searching for a college student that they say went missing over the weekend. Michael Doherty, 20, was last seen around 1:30 a.m. Sunday near Phyllis Lane in Franklin. He is a junior at Duke University and was already home for the summer, WBZ reported. Doherty is a white male, approximately 5-feet-10 with brown hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a blue T-shirt with a Nike symbol, black pants and sneakers, police said. Doherty “had been attending a gathering with some friends” at the time when he was last seen, police wrote in a statement on Monday, according to the Boston Globe. Police were interviewing those friends. Officials were asking residents to check outside their homes, including any sheds or detached buildings.

Franklin police are looking for Michael Doherty, who has been missing since early Sunday morning. FRANKLIN POLICE

Police were using K-9 units and canoes in the search on Monday, which included a “swampy area” near Phyllis Lane, according to WBZ. State environmental police also joined the search Monday morning, WBZ reported, because their officers are trained

in searching through woods and swamps. Anyone with information is advised to call the Franklin Police at 508-528-1212. Officials are warning residents that there will be an increased public safety presence in the area as other agencies join the investigation.

The number of prisoners in Massachusetts jails is down 12 percent from six years ago, but spending is still on the rise. Since 2011, the number of people incarcerated in the state has dropped by almost 3,000 — from 23,850 to 20,961. State spending, however, is up by 18 percent, bringing spending to $1.2 billion last year, according to a report released Monday. Spending in Massachusetts jails has jumped so much that the state now spends more on cor-

rections than it does on higher education. The report, by nonpartisan policy think tank MassINC, raises questions about state spending priorities as most of the spending increases have gone to salaries and hire more staff rather than to expand social services and

anti-recidivism programs. About two-thirds of all people incarcerated in Massachusetts will reoffend, according to the report, but instead of investing in programs for inmates, 84 percent of the increased spending went to hire more staff and for higher wages. Average sal-

aries grew from $65,500 to $76,000 between 2011 and 2016. In that period, spending on programs for inmates actually declined from 3 percent of the total Department of Corrections budget in 2011 to 2.7 percent in 2016. “Strong evidence has emerged over the last decade demonstrating that behavioral health treatment, education and training, and re-entry supports can reduce recidivism. Throughout the country, administrators of correctional facilities have sought to increase access to these services. Numerous reviews of the criminal justice system have recommended this course of action in Massachusetts, but progress has been slow,” report authors Ben Forman and Michael Widner wrote in the report.

Fifth victim in Lynnway Auto Auction crash dies A fifth person has died from injuries following a crash at a Billerica auto auction earlier this month when an SUV drove into a crowd of people and crashed into a wall. Ruben Espaillat, 55, of Methuen, died Saturday, 10 days after the May 3 crash at the Lynnway Auto Auction, Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said in a statement. The crash is under active investigation by the DA, state police and Billerica police. The four other victims were 36-year-old Leezandra Aponte of Lowell, 50-year-old Elliott Rowlands Jr. of Buzzards Bay, and 48-year-old Brenda Lopez and 49-year-old Pantaleon Santos, both of Rhode Island. The 76-year-old driver, who has not been charged, said the Jeep Cherokee he was driving was “defective” and accelerated on its own as he was driving it into the building to put on display for auction. was suspended at the time of the crash, NECN reported. Two people died at the scene of the crash, a third died at the hospital later that day and a fourth victim, Elliott Rowlands, succumbed to his injuries on May 10. State police said that an investigation is ongoing. “This remains an active and ongoing investigation being conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, the Billerica Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police CARS unit,” the DA’s office said.

State police said they do not suspect the crash was a terrorist act. “At this point, there is no evidence or information to suggest the incident was caused by an intentional or terrorist act. All evidence and information at this time suggests an accidental cause,” police said in a May 3 statement. The Lynnway Auto Auction is a dealer consignment auction and has been in business since 1997. It moved to its current address in Billerica in 2011, according to the company’s website. ERIN TIERNAN

US appeals court grills lawyers on Trump’s revised travel ban

can ban them all.â€? The Justice Department argues Trump issued his order solely to protect national security. Outside the Seattle courtroom a group of protesters gathered carrying signs with slogans like, “The ban is still racist,â€? and “No ban, no wall.â€? Paez asked if an executive order detaining Japanese-Americans during the World War II would pass muster under the government’s current logic. Acting U.S. Solicitor General Jeffrey Wall, arguing on behalf of the Trump administration, said that the order from the 1940s, which is now viewed as a low point in U.S. civil rights history, would not be constitutional. If Trump’s executive order was the same as the one involving JapaneseAmericans, Wall said: “I wouldn’t be standing here, and the U.S. would not be defending it.â€? Judge Michael Daly Hawkins asked challengers to the ban about the wide latitude held by U.S. presidents to decide who can enter the country.

“Why shouldn’t we be deferential to what the president says?â€? Hawkins said. “That is the million dollar question,â€? said Katyal. A reasonable person would see Trump’s statements as evidence of discriminatory intent, Katyal said. The panel, made up entirely of judges appointed by Democratic former President Bill Clinton, reviewed a Hawaii judge’s ruling that blocked parts of the Republican president’s revised executive order on travel. The March order was Trump’s second effort to craft travel restrictions. The first, issued on Jan. 27, led to chaos and protests at airports before it was blocked by courts. The second order was intended to overcome the legal problems posed by the original ban, but it was also suspended by judges before it could take effect on March 16. U.S. District Judge Derrick Watson in Hawaii blocked 90-day entry restrictions on people from Libya, Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, as

U.S. appeals court judges on Monday questioned the lawyer defending President Donald Trump’s temporary travel ban about whether it discriminates against Muslims and pressed challengers to explain why the court should not defer to Trump’s presidential powers to set the policy. Opponents, including the state of Hawaii and civil rights groups, say that both Trump’s first ban and the later revised ban discriminate against Muslims. The government argues that the text of the order does not mention any specific religion and is needed to protect the country against attacks. In addressing the Justice Department at the hearing in Seattle, 9th Circuit Judge Richard Paez pointed out that many of Trump’s statements about Muslims came “during the midst of a highly contentious [election] campaign, and asked if that should be taken into account when deciding how much weight they should be given in reviewing the travel ban’s constitutionality. Neal Katyal, an attorney representing the state of Hawaii which is opposing the ban, said the evidence goes beyond Trump’s campaign statements. “The government has not engaged in mass, dragnet exclusions in the past 50 years, Katyal said. “This is something new and unusual in which you’re saying this whole class of people, some of whom are dangerous, we

well as part of the order that suspended entry of refugee applicants for 120 days. As part of that ruling, Watson cited Trump’s campaign statements on Muslims as evidence that his executive order was discriminatory. The 9th Circuit previously blocked Trump’s first executive order. Last week the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Virginia reviewed a Maryland judge’s ruling that blocked the 90-day entry restrictions. That court is largely made up of Democrats, and the judges’ questioning appeared to break along partisan lines. A ruling has not yet been released.

Apply for income-driven repayment Income-driven repayment can make your monthly student-loan bill more affordable. If you qualify, it’ll cap your payments at a percentage of your income and extend your loan term to 20 or 25 years. And if you’re still on the postgrad job hunt, you may not have to pay anything right away. Plus, if you’re under an income-driven repay-

ment plan and qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness, you can save even more money: After you make qualified payments for 10 years, the remaining balance on your loans will be discharged tax-free. You’ll need to reapply each year to stay on your plan, so set a reminder one month beforehand to make sure you don’t miss the deadline.

There are plenty of ways to make student debt less of a hassle. ISTOCK

Sign up for auto-pay Many student loan servicers will knock 0.25 percentage point off your interest rate if you sign up for auto-pay, and it’ll

keep you from missing payments. Plus, if you set it to withdraw more than your monthly payment from your bank account, you can pay off your debt faster. Just check that those extra dollars are going toward your principal balance to maximize savings. Look into refinancing You can refinance your student loans with another lender to get a lower interest rate. It’s usually best to refinance only private loans so you don’t lose any federal borrower protections, like income-driven repayment or forgiveness programs. To qualify, you’ll need to have a credit score above 650, a steady source of income and a low debt-to-income ratio. If your credit score is on the low side, focus on building it by keeping credit card balances at or below 30 percent of your line of credit and paying your bills on time. DEVON DELFINO

Let’s talk about the trailer for Kylie Jenner’s new show Kylie Jenner, a so-called human woman who moonlights as a fluorescent wig monger, has a new show coming out on E! Because, as I keep telling you guys, the apocalypse is nigh and nothing matters anymore. Now, the trailer for “Life of Kylie” has been released, and it’s just as terrifying as you think.

Jenna Dewan Tatum dishes on dating Justin Timberlake

The “docuseries,” which E! calls “highly anticipated” appears to be a mash up of horror and reality television. It’s a real accomplishment, especially since those two things haven’t really been so seamlessly blended since “Blair Witch Project.” “I do feel pressured to not let anybody down,” she continues. “I am not totally innocent because I am keeping up this lifestyle. I can’t do this forever.” OK! The candid glimpses of her life seem overly scripted. It looks like it’s the youngest Jenner’s first time petting a wig, or getting out of a car, for example. I guess what I’m saying is that my theory is that Kylie Jenner is an alien creature inside the husk of a human and she’s trying to convince us otherwise. Frankly, I am of the opinion that she is doing a really poor job.

Jenna Dewan Tatum is an actress and dancer who has admitted her now-husband Channing Tatum seduced her with the help of Uggs and a sombrero. Justin Timberlake is a singer who took *NSYNC’s split very personally. Apparently, these two conventionally attractive people dated. And now, Dewan Tatum is reluctantly dishing about it. On an episode of “Watch What Happens Live,” the 36-yearold admitted that she briefly dated

I mean, he’s reportedly dating a woman, Tess Ward, but I love that he thinks he’s so sexually free. Unfortunately, my imagined romance with Styles would be shortlived, because he doesn’t really imbibe in the sweet caress of booze. “It’s just not for me ... I’m not straight-edge or anything … but I like knowing I’m not going to be stressing about having to do something the next day.” Oh, well.

Derek Jeter doesn’t know a damn thing about fatherhood. A few months ago, Hannah Jeter — formerly of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit fame — announced on The Player’s Tribune she and Derek were expecting a daughter. And on Sunday, the couple stepped out for a ceremony to retire Derek’s jersey number at the Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. When a reporter asked whether Derek was ready for the challenges of being a dad in the press conference afterward, the father-to-be laughed (because fatherhood is a joke, get it?) and gave a

now.” But to be clear, this wasn’t a rebound fling or anything. “I was not the rebound! I was very clear not to be [a rebound].” The two met when Dewan Tatum worked as a backup dancer on his tour. I mean, Dewan Tatum is definitely Timberlake’s type: athletic, pretty, very defined chin area. Look at Jessica Biel and tell me otherwise. Anyway, everything worked out. Dewan Tatum is now married to Channing Tatum! Timberlake is married to Jessica Biel! And Britney, well: She’s doing the best of all. She’s suspended in some sort of permanent adolescence and has a hot 23-yearold boyfriend. Talk about hashtag goals.

Derek Jeter is woefully unprepared for fatherhood forceful “No!” Then he explained. Or, well, he tried to. “You know, I prided myself in my career to be prepared at all games. Any time I’m unprepared, it makes me uncomfortable,” he admitted. “I’m unpre-

pared. From everything people have told me, just do it and see what happens. People can give you advice but until you’re in it, you never really know what to expect.” Good luck with that one, Hannah.

Derek Jeter isn’t so sure about this whole fatherhood thing.

It may be hard to believe, but Rob Reiner’s classic adventure comedy “The Princess Bride” celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. In honor of the milestone, the Man in Black, aka actor Cary Elwes, is hitting the road for a special Q&A and movie screening tour, which stops at the Wilbur Theatre on Friday night. Although “The Princess Bride” wasn’t exactly a hit when it first swashbuckled its way into theaters in 1987, the fantasy flick starring Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Christopher Guest and Billy Crystal has turned into a cult phenomenon over the years. Fans just can’t seem to get enough of this quirky family film and its endlessly quotable moments. “I’m mystified by it,”

Elwes says of the movie’s continued success. “If I knew, I’d guess we’d all make another film. It’s a beautiful thing!” Looking back on the experience, the 54-yearold British star is honored to have worked

with such wonderful cast mates, like the towering, “Eighth wonder of the world” Andre the Giant. But his favorite part was probably traveling around the picturesque European countryside and pitching tents with

Elwes got a taste of the Back Bay area and other parts of town while visiting his older brother Damian during his stint at Harvard University. “I love Boston,” Elwes says. “I have a great fondness for it.”

The odds say that Celtics fans are going to be disappointed again on Tuesday night. Every 10 years, the C’s are in position to draft a once-in-a-generation player, but the lottery balls (more specifically, the computers) don’t fall their way. In 1997, the Celtics had the best odds (27.51 percent of being able to draft Tim Duncan). They wound up with the third overall pick. In 2007, the Celtics had the second best odds of nabbing the No. 1 overall pick (19.9 percent) and the second best odds of landing the second overall pick (18.8 percent) – which turned out to be Kevin Durant. They wound up with the fifth overall pick. Thanks to the pillaging of the Brooklyn Nets four years ago - in a trade that shipped Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett out

of Boston in exchange for a pu pu platter of draft picks – the Celtics own the best odds of any NBA team to get the top overall pick Tuesday (8:30 p.m., ESPN). It’s important to remember that the C’s have the “best” odds and not “good” odds of “winning the lottery.” They have a 25 percent chance of nabbing the No. 1 pick, a 21.5 percent chance of landing the second overall pick, a 17.8 percent chance

35.7

THE CELTICS HAVE A 35.7 PERCENT CHANCE OF FALLING TO NO. 4 of landing the No. 3 pick and a 35.7 percent chance of getting the No. 4 pick. In other words, the odds are better of them getting the 4 pick than they are of them getting the top pick. The Suns have the second best odds at the No. 1 pick (19.9 percent) and the Lakers have the third best odds at the No. 1 pick (15.6). All 14 teams in the lotto have a chance at the top pick

(Miami has the worst odds at 0.5 percent). The Celtics can do no worse than pick No. 4. For the hell of it, Metro played Tankathon. com’s NBA draft lottery simulator on Monday. On the first try, Philly jumped up to No. 1 and the Celtics fell to No. 4. On the second try, the Celtics “won” the lottery and stayed at No. 1. On the third try, the Celtics again fell to No. 4.

The players Oh ya, the players. After all this computer mumbo jumbo shakes out, the Celtics will be turning their attention to the actual NBA Draft, which takes place on June 22 in Brooklyn (wow, that’s gotta sting, Nets fans). In Metro’s latest NBA Mock Draft, we have the Celtics taking Washington point guard Markelle Fultz No. 1 overall. UCLA guard Lonzo Ball goes to the Lakers, Kansas swingman Josh Jackson goes to the Suns and NC State point guard Dennis Smith goes to the 76ers at No. 4. Duke small forward Jayson Tatum and Kentucky point guard De’Aaron Fox are also players who could crack the top four.

Should you follow the wisdom of the crowds, or go against the grain? Let’s find out. MOST ADDED

Yonder Alonso, 1B, Oakland Athletics Alonso raked in spring training, but most fantasy owners didn’t bat an eye. At this point, most people know that spring stats are fairly weak predictors of regular season performance. Sometimes, though, they’re the result of a tangible change in approach. That’s the case with Alonso, who in his age-30 season is finally tapping into his power. Given how underwhelming he’d been previously — his 12 home runs this season represent both a career high and equal his prior two seasons’ total combined — it was easy to forget that he was once a top prospect. If he continues elevating the ball, he’s a good bet to keep producing. Buy.

Yonder Alonso should continue to rake. GETTY IMAGES

After breaking out in 2013, Griffin missed the next two seasons with arm problems. In his return last season, the veteran’s performance was uninspiring. Thanks largely to an inability to keep the ball in the yard, Griffin posted a 5.07 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 119 innings. He’s off to a much better start this year, with a 2.45 ERA and 0.85 WHIP through six turns. Home runs have still been an issue, though, and he’s become even more extreme in his fly-ball tendencies. When his .200 BABIP inevitably rises, things could get ugly in a hurry. Sell. MOST DROPPED

Steven Souza, OF, Tampa Bay Rays Souza has cooled after a blistering start, and combined with him missing four games with a hand injury last week, that was enough to convince many fantasy owners to jump ship. A deeper look provides ammunition for both

sides of the argument. Souza has cut down on whiffs, but he’s also making authoritative contact less often. He’s hitting a lot of line drives, but not elevating the ball as much as usual. His walks are up, but he’s also benefiting from a .372 BABIP. When in doubt, defer to previous performance. Souza’s hasn’t been anything to write home about. Sell.

Brandon McCarthy, SP, Los Angeles Dodgers One of the game’s more cerebral players, McCarthy’s body hasn’t kept up with his mind. He’s pitched more than 170 innings just once in his career, and made only 13 starts combined in 2015 and 2016. He got off to a great start this season, but finds himself dealing with injury yet again as he’s currently on the shelf with shoulder trouble. McCarthy is an extremely high-maintenance fantasy asset, and his production doesn’t justify the hassle. Sell.
