DEPUTY AG TO BRIEF FULL CYBERATTACKS SLOW SENATE ON COMEY FIRING BUT FEARS REMAIN

PLANE CRASHES IN NJ, KILLING TWO PILOTS

Deputy U.S. Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will conduct a classified briefing on Thursday for the full U.S. Senate on President Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said. The top Democrat in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, said in a statement he hoped senators would use the briefing to seek the “full truth” about Comey’s dismissal, press Rosenstein “to

make way” for a special prosecutor and ensure the administration preserves and makes public any recordings of his conversations with Comey. Critics have assailed Trump for firing Comey, who was leading the FBI’s probe into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible ties between Moscow and the Trump campaign. REUTERS

BANKS REINFORCE CYBER DEFENSES

Banks have tightened their security systems and increased their surveillance after the global cyber assault on individuals and organizations worldwide. Capitalizing on spying tools believed to have been developed by the U.S. National Security Agency, the “ransomware” attack launched on Friday has infected tens of thousands of computers in 104 countries, putting the financial industry on high alert.

It halted the production lines of a European carmaker and delayed surgical operations in Britain’s National Health Service. Many suspected infections were of Russian computers. Russia’s central bank said it had recorded harmful software being sent en masse to Russian banks but that the attacks had been unsuccessful. Sberbank, the country’s biggest lender, said viruses had not got into its systems. REUTERS

The global WannaCry “ransomware” cyberattack spread more slowly on Monday with no major infections reported, as attention shifted to investment and government policy implications of lax cyber security. The countries most affected by WannaCry were the same as Friday: Russia, Taiwan, Ukraine and India, Avast’s data showed. The number of infections has fallen dramatically

since Friday’s peak when more than 9,000 computers were being hit per hour. By afternoon on the U.S East Coast, new infections had fallen to the low hundreds of machines and continue to decline, Avast said. Earlier on Monday, Chinese traffic police and schools reported they had been targeted as the attack rolled into Asia for the new work week, but no there were no major disruptions. REUTERS

A small plane on Monday crashed on approach near Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, killing two pilots and sparking fires at two buildings that could be seen from New York, the Federal Aviation Administration and local police said. The FAA said the Learjet 35 departed Philadelphia and went down at 3:30 p.m. local time about a quarter mile from the airport in a residential

area in northern New Jersey on approach to Runway One. Carlstadt Police Sergeant John Cleary told reporters the plane hit one building in an industrial or manufacturing area, skidded across a parking lot and broke apart. The flaming debris then set a second building on fire, he said. “The plane was seen listing to its left side, so obviously there was some sort of malfunction,” Cleary said. REUTERS

Inside an exclusive Manhattan singles mixer unlike any other I met the “Minister of Fun” and “Ass Doctor” before the evening was done. KIMBERLY M. AQUILINA @KimESTAqui kimberly.aquilina@metro.us

I’m single — single and caught between the “I just want a glass of wine and a good make out” and “someone who makes me laugh, please think I’m special!” feelings that wash over one as the postbreakup months roll by. Red-lipped and wearing heels, I went to Ballroom Romance, a private event hosted by the dating club Social Concierge. Despite my fearless reputation among friends, I

was nervous. The singles mixed at the Jane Hotel in the West Village, and Social Concierge bills itself as being pretty picky with its “eligible members.” “Social Concierge parties attract the city’s most eligible 20- to 30-something singles,” the website reads. “Our members are well-educated, driven, attractive and sociable.” I was ready to disconnect from the dating apps and try something new. Social Concierge offers an alternative, a chance to see a person, hear their voice, smell their breath and let them buy you a drink. So, I gave it a try. Once there, instead of approaching a mixed XXXY group, I put my coat and bag on a couch where a group of friendly-look-

ing 20-something women were gathered, and I asked if anyone had been to a mixer before. Katie explained that she joined for the monthly fee of $25, submitted her photo and provided her employer’s name (Social Concierge verifies by social media or calling the applicant), but she said that she was entry-level — not the rich mover and shaker I thought members must be. I procured a glass of malbec and looked for a “crowd mixologist,” a person Social Concierge billed as a “bold character” with a corsage who was supposed to make

introductions

every five minutes to keep the lonely-hearts club swinging. I had never been to a singles mixer before, but from what I’d been told, the mixologists are unique to Social Concierge. Having a designated “wingm a n / woman” at the ready is a nice touch. L e o , dubbed the “Minister of Fun” by his Ben Goodman (right) friends, seemed makes introductions as to be the only a “crowd mixologist.” participant with a MATTHEW BRIAN FISHER game plan. He had

personal business cards (the “fun” ones, he called them). Leo told us he previously hired a professional wingman who acted as a personal dating coach. Aside from my selfconsciousness, most people seemed to do well. Biggest indicator of good times? No one was on their phone. I saw two singles in an on-the-lips smooch as they parted. Social Concierge success! By the end of the night, I had also spoken to a neurosurgeon who kept looking around during our banter for his friend — an (as he exclaimed) “ass doctor.” The next Social Concierge party is scheduled for Thursday at 8 p.m. in Chelsea.

It looks like the long wait — and outdoor stair climbing — may be over for the thousands of commuters who come through the George Washington Bridge Bus Station on a daily basis. Since 2014, the main concourse of the GWBBS has been closed while renovations were made, but come Tuesday morning, a new experience for travelers is set to be unveiled, one that includes new escalators and elevators, an indoor waiting area and, for the first time, a roof over where passengers board and exit buses. “I’m looking forward [to the new terminal]. It’s very exciting,” said Karen Koppel, who grew up in the neighborhood and was heading to Nyack, New York. “I think the old terminal was horrible.” Stan, who declined to give his last name and travels between New York and New Jersey several times a month, agreed. “I am happy I’ll have cover over where I catch my bus, especially in winter,” he said. “I’ll be glad to see the escalators working because those steps got a bit rough.” The GWBBS is managed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) and is home to New Jersey Transit and carriers such as Express/ Spanish Transportation, Ameribus/Saddle River and Rockland Coach/Red & Tan. The original station was built in 1963 over a network of highways

that feed from the George Washington Bridge. While bus operations are set to move into their new home at the GWBBS, many tenants of the new 120,000 square feet of retail space are expected to move in at a later date. The same goes for the tunnel between the bus station and the A-train station at 175th Street. “I’m thrilled the bus station is finally ready to open, but I’m concerned smaller, neighborhoodbased tenants have been put at a disadvantage by the delays and don’t have enough support,” Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer said. “Support for the smaller local businesses, who still need their move-in dates, and local hiring for jobs in the bus station need to be priorities in the coming days.” The reconstruction has been plagued with delays — to the point where the Port Authority has “to date collected $1.5 million from the private developer, the GWBBS Development Venture” in fines for the holdup, a PANYNJ spokesman said. The private developer did not respond to requests for comment. The terminal is slated to relocate its bus operations to its third-floor pavilion starting at 5 a.m. on Tuesday. Passengers can enter the facility on Fort Washington Avenue and take the stairs, escalator or elevator to the pavilion. On the same level as the bus pavilion will be an indoor waiting area with 125 seats, ticket booths, public restrooms and interactive passenger information kiosks. Metro submitted questions to the GWBBS Development Venture regarding the work that may still remain on the terminal but did not hear back as of press time.

MTA rolls out ‘Baby on Board’ buttons to encourage courtesy among strangers The agency also unveiled “Please Offer Me a Seat” buttons for seniors and disabled New Yorkers. NIKKI M. MASCALI @MetroNewYork

nikki.mascali@metro.us

You’ve surely seen “Baby on Board” signs on countless cars over the years, but a button version may be coming soon to a New York subway train near you. The MTA is releasing the free button, as well as one that says, “Please offer me a seat,” as a pilot program of its Courtesy Counts initiative. The buttons aim to encourage straphangers to offer their seats to fellow travelers who may be pregnant, disabled or a senior citizen. It’s something you would hope most New Yorkers would do anyway, but sadly many do not. The program kicked off on Sunday and will continue through Labor Day. It is thought to be the first of its kind in the U.S. and was modeled after an initiative rolled out in London in 2005 – about 130,000 buttons are distributed there annually. “Pregnant riders, seniors and those with disabilities often need

seats more than others, but their condition may not always be visible,” Ronnie Hakim, interim executive director of the MTA, said in a statement. “We hope this campaign will help their fellow riders to be more willing to offer them a seat without having to ask a personal question first.” Hakim said the MTA would “continue to designate ‘priority seating’ for riders with disabilities,” but “this is another way to expand the availability of seating for those who need it most.” How do I apply for an MTA courtesy button? Right now, New Yorkers can only obtain one of the courtesy buttons at nymta.civicconnect. com/courtesy, and one pin is available per address. Pins will take about two to three weeks to arrive, the MTA said. The agency said it is “accepting feedback on other distribution methods.” Do the buttons expire? Since the program is voluntary, unenforced and based on the honor system, straphangers are encouraged to only sport the button while they’re needed, but they have no designated expiration date. For more information, visit Nymta.civicconnect .com.

SYNAGOGUE FIRE Fire rips through Manhattan synagogue The cause of a fire at a historic Jewish synagogue is under investigation by the New York City Fire Department. Flames spread through Beth Hamedrash Hagodol, a synagogue on the Lower East Side at Norfolk and Broome streets, on Sunday just after 7 p.m. No one was inside at the time of the three-alarm fire,

which reportedly destroyed the interior of the synagogue. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries while bringing the blaze under control. The synagogue is some 167 years old, was built in 1850 as a Baptist church and converted to a synagogue in 1885, and is believed to be the nation’s oldest Russian Orthodox Jewish congregation, the Daily News reported. New York City’s Department of Education said on Monday that federal immigration agents would be barred from entering school property after agents showed up at a school last week to seek information about a fourth grade student. man who had lived in the United States since he was 9 was sent back to Mexico by U.S. border authorities. New York City Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina on Monday visited the school to reassure students and parents they would be safe from federal interference. “In our schools, we protect our students and our families, and want to reassure parents that no information is given to any federal agent,” Farina said in a video circulated by City Hall through social media. No student information was shared with the agents, Farina said, in keeping with guidance to city

schools in March. Immigration agents will not be allowed to enter a school building, but will be “kept out on the sidewalks,” she added. Farina was joined by Nisha Agarwal, the city’s commissioner for immigrant affairs, who reminded parents that public schools enroll children whether they are in the country legally or not. The immigration agents’ appearance at the school was the first at a New York City public school as far as Department of Education officials are aware, department spokeswoman Toya Holness said in a telephone call. The agents did not ask to see or speak with the unidentified student, U.S. Citizenship and Immi-

gration Services spokeswoman Katie Tichacek said in an emailed statement. They wanted information about the student’s enrollment to process an “immigration benefit,” such as a request for a visa, a permanentresidency g r e e n card or citizenship, s h e added. “ A l though school visits are n o t rou-

tine in these circumstances, they are not unprecedented,” Tichacek said. Trump in April attacked a federal judge’s ruling that blocked his executive order seeking to withhold funds from “sanctuary cities,” such as New York, for illegal immigrants, vowing to appeal it to the U.S. Supreme Court. Accused bomber Rahimi seeks reduced charges in NJ case An Afghan-born U.S. citizen accused of planting bombs in New York and New Jersey fired on police in New Jersey to evade arrest, but those crimes fall short of attempted murder as charged, his defense lawyer argued on Monday. Ahmad Khan Rahimi, 29, faces a 30-count indictment in New Jersey’s Union County in relation to a bomb blast in New York City’s Chelsea district last September that wounded about 30 people. Another bomb in New Jersey injured no one and other devices he is accused of planting did not detonate. Rahimi also faces a

host of federal charges brought by U.S. prosecutors in New York and New Jersey, who have portrayed him as a jihadist who bought bomb components on eBay, praised Osama bind Laden and kept a journal expressing outrage at the U.S. “slaughter” of mujahideen fighters in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Palestine. Rahimi, who has pleaded not guilty to all charges, appeared in court shackled at the feet and hands while wearing a blue prison uniform, white skullcap and beard. He appeared to be mouthing verses of the Koran while seated

at the defense table. His state-appointed defense attorney, Peter Liguori, has asked Union County Superior Court Judge Regina Caulfield to dismiss all charges, but in oral arguments he focused mostly on getting three attempted murder charges reduced to aggravated assault in the instances where the police officers were unhurt. Two other officers were wounded in the shootout, which erupted on the streets of Linden, New Jersey, two days after the bombs detonated. Rahimi was shot between eight and 12 times, Liguori said.

it was criminal conduct more worthy of an aggravated assault charge. “This is a case where there is emotion, where there is possible prejudice,” Liguori said. “His intent was to get away. His intent was to avoid police pursuit ... Running and firing back over your shoulder? Trump revealed ‘highly classified’ information in White House meeting with Russians The revelation could damage a relationship with a key spy partner. President Donald Trump revealed highly classified information during an Oval Office visit by the Russian foreign minister and ambassador last week, jeopardizing a “critical source of intelligence on the Islamic State,” the reported Monday afternoon. That information came from another country which has a highly sensitive intelligence-sharing arrangement with the United States — one known to very few within the U.S. government and withheld from allies. “This is code-word information,” a U.S. official familiar with the matter told the Post, referring to one of the highest levels of secret

information held by U.S. spies. Trump “revealed more information to the Russian ambassador than we have shared with our own allies,” the official said. The information had do with the ability to use laptop computers to make explosive devices, a tactic being explored by the Islamic State. The Post reported that Trump did not have permission from the intelligence partner to share the information with Russia, and his actions risk endangering the relationship with the partner, which has access to inner workings of the Islamic State. In the meeting, Trump “seemed to be boasting about his inside knowledge of the looming threat,” the Post reported: “I get great intel. I have people brief me on great intel every day,” said Trump, according to

an official with knowledge of the conversation. Trump discussed details of the threat that the United States only learned through the espionage partner: How the Islamic State was pursuing a specific plot, how much harm that kind of attack could cause and the specific city in the Islamic State’s territory where the U.S.

intelligence partner detected the threat. National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster downplayed the severity of the president’s revelations. “The president and the foreign minister reviewed common threats from terrorist organizations to include threats to aviation,” said McMaster, who was in the meeting. “At no time were any intelligence sources or methods discussed, and no military operations were disclosed that were not already known publicly.” But a U.S. official that had been briefed on the matter, in confirming the Post report to BuzzFeed News, said, “It’s far worse than what has already been reported.” The president has the right to declassify any information he wants, so the action was not illegal. In addressing the Justice Department at the hearing in Seattle, 9th Circuit Judge Richard Paez pointed out that many of Trump’s statements about Muslims came “during the midst of a highly contentious [election] campaign, and asked if that should be taken into account when deciding how much weight they should be given in reviewing the travel ban’s constitutionality. Judge Michael Daly Hawkins asked challengers to the ban about the wide latitude held by U.S. presidents to decide who can enter the country. “Why shouldn’t we be deferential to what the

president says?â€? Hawkins said. “That is the million dollar question,â€? said Katyal. A reasonable person would see Trump’s statements as evidence of discriminatory intent, Katyal said. The panel, made up entirely of judges appointed by Democratic former President Bill Clinton, reviewed a Hawaii judge’s ruling that blocked parts of the Republican president’s revised executive order on travel.Â

The March order was Trump’s second effort to craft travel restrictions. The first, issued on Jan. 27, led to chaos and protests at airports before it was blocked by courts. The second order was intended to overcome the legal problems posed by the original ban, but it was also suspended by judges before it could take effect on March 16. U.S. District Judge Derrick Watson in Hawaii blocked 90-day entry restrictions on people from Libya, Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, as well as part of the order that suspended entry of refugee applicants for 120 days. As part of that ruling, Watson cited Trump’s campaign statements on Muslims as evidence that his executive order was discriminatory. REUTERS

Researchers see possible North Korea link to global cyberattack Symantec and Kaspersky Lab said on Monday that some code in an earlier version of the WannaCry software had also appeared in programs used by the Lazarus Group, which researchers from many companies have identified as a North Korea-run hacking operation. Cyber security researchers have found technical evidence they said could link North Korea with the global WannaCry “ransomware” cyber attack that has infected more than 300,000 computers in 150 countries since Friday. “This is the best clue

we have seen to date as to the origins of WannaCry,” Kaspersky Lab researcher Kurt Baumgartner told Reuters. Both firms said it was too early to tell whether North Korea was involved in the attacks, based on the evidence that was published on Twitter by Google security researcher Neel Mehta. The attacks, which slowed on Monday, are among the fastest-spreading extortion campaigns on record. The research will be closely followed by law enforcement agencies around the world, including Washington, where President Donald Trump’s homeland security adviser said on Monday that both foreign nations and cyber criminals were possible culprits. The two security firms said they needed to study the code more and asked for others to help with the analysis. Hackers do reuse code from other operations, so even copied lines

fall well short of proof. U.S. and European security officials told Reuters on condition of anonymity that it was too early to say who might be behind the attacks, but they did not rule out North Korea as a suspect. FireEye Inc, another large cyber security firm, said it was also investigating a possible link. “The similarities we see between malware linked to that group and WannaCry are not unique enough to be strongly suggestive of a common operator,” FireEye researcher John Miller said. The Lazarus hackers, acting for impoverished North Korea, have been more brazen in pursuit of financial gain than others, and have been blamed for the theft of $81 million from the Bangladesh central bank, according to some cyber security firms. The North Korean mission to the United Nations was not immediately available for comment. REUTERS

Workers: Wal-Mart discriminated against thousands of pregnant women Two former Wal-Mart employees have filed a lawsuit accusing the retailer of treating thousands of pregnant workers as “second-class citizens” by rejecting their requests to limit heavy lifting, climbing on ladders and other dangerous tasks. The proposed class action lawsuit was filed in federal court in Illinois on Friday by Talisa Borders and Otisha Woolbright, who say that until 2014, Arkansas-based Wal-Mart had a companywide policy that denied pregnant women the same accommodations as workers with other disabilities. The class could include at least 20,000 women and possibly up to 50,000 who worked at Wal-Mart while pregnant before the policy change,

according to the lawsuit. A Wal-Mart spokesman said the company did not have any comment. Borders and Woolbright say that Wal-Mart’s old policy violated a federal law requiring employers to treat pregnancy as a temporary disability and provide work accommodations to pregnant women. The Supreme Court, in a 2015 case involving United Parcel Service, said employers cannot treat pregnant workers differently from those with other disabilities or medical conditions. Wal-Mart, the largest private U.S. employer, changed its policy in 2014 to treat pregnancy as a disability. But lawyers for the plaintiffs in the lawsuit say the changes

did not go far enough, and they were planning a separate lawsuit involving the new policy. Woolbright says her manager at a Florida WalMart told her pregnancy was “no excuse” for not doing heavy lifting. She says she was fired from her job in the deli department after injuring herself lifting trays that weighed up to 50 pounds and inquiring further about the company’s pregnancy policies. Borders, who worked at an Illinois Wal-Mart, says she was reprimanded for asking co-workers to climb ladders and lift heavy boxes while she was pregnant, and forced to go on unpaid leave. When she returned, she says, she was paid $2 less per hour. REUTERS

Lyft, Waymo join to launch self-driving car pilot program Ride services company Lyft Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s self-driving car unit Waymo have launched a self-driving vehicle partnership, bringing together two rivals to dominant ride-sharing service Uber Technologies Inc. Lyft, the No. 2 U.S. ride service by ride volume, in a statement said a deal to launch self-driving pilots would accelerate its vision for transportation and Waymo, which is beginning tests of a self-driving car service in Phoenix, said the partnership would let its technology reach “more people, in more places.” Neither offered many details of the agreement, which was reported earlier by the New York Times. transportation, cutting costs of ride services and changing the way people buy and use cars. Uber is the biggest U.S. ride service by volume and has been developing self-driving technology, which it sees as a key to its future, as it expands its ride service with human drivers. Waymo has some of the most advanced selfdriving vehicle technology and has been looking for partners, while Lyft offers ride services in about 300 U.S. cities. Still, Lyft said the deal is nonexclusive and will allow it to continue a self-

driving partnership with U.S. automaker General Motors Co., which is a Lyft investor. GM plans to deploy thousands of self-driving electric cars in test fleets partnering with Lyft beginning 2018, sources told Reuters in February. Lyft is extremely early in its autonomous efforts. It has relied heavily on General Motors for any testing and doesn’t have a program that rivals Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group, a department in Uber dedicated to building self-driving technology.

Is there some teaching component in addition to the history master’s that’s going to help you be a better teacher, or some combination that gives you the ability to take classes in the education department of the university?” she continues. Overall, “it’s important to have a specific goal, and be able to articulate your purpose in applying to that program,” she says.

After spending so much of our lives on a conveyer belt of schooling, jumping right into graduate studies after finishing college often seems like the next logical step. But for many students, that’s not always the smartest move, says Linda Abraham, founder and president of admissions consulting company Accepted.com. Abraham walked us through what students should consider before making the decision to pursue a graduate degree:

graduate school should be where you want to end up, says Abraham. “Maybe you want to become a researcher, or get an MBA to go into consulting, or you want to teach history in high school,” she explains. “Either way, you should always have a professional end in mind.” And the statementof-purpose essay — one of the many require-

ments of the application process — is a great way to discover whether or not you have a legitimate postgraduation goal. If you can’t sit down and write that out without some sense of clarity, it’s probably worth reconsidering, says Abraham.

Have you tested this career path? Before deciding on a graduate degree, prospective students should have tested out the field in some way, says Abraham. 4 Is this financially responsible?

Running through a cost-benefit analysis is crucial when considering whether or not to pursue a graduate degree. “[Students] are going to invest x amount of years, forgo so much income and pay however much in out of pocket tuition expenses,” she says, so the question becomes, “Will they get a job afterwards that’s going to pay back that debt? “If the likelihood is yes, then fine, but if the likelihood is no, they have to ask themselves, ‘Will I derive enough satisfaction from these studies and from whatever position I’m going to be in later, that I’m willing to spend the money and the time anyway?’ ”

Let’s talk about the trailer for Kylie Jenner’s new show Kylie Jenner, a so-called human woman who moonlights as a fluorescent wig monger, has a new show coming out on E! Because, as I keep telling you guys, the apocalypse is nigh and nothing matters anymore. Now, the trailer for “Life of Kylie” has been released, and it’s just as terrifying as you think.

Sexy Harry Styles sexily talks about his sexy sexuality Confession: I am a 29-year-old woman. Things that interest me include: bottles of Pinot Noir that are priced $15 and under; the various stylings of Blanche Devereaux from “Golden Girls”; and an old dude that you may know named Michael Fassbender. Boy bands and the British children who populate them are of little to no interest to me. But there’s something about this Harry Styles dude, man. I feel like he just gets me. His latest swoonworthy offense? He says he has nothing to hide:

Jenna Dewan Tatum is an actress and dancer who has admitted her now-husband Channing Tatum seduced her with the help of Uggs and a sombrero. Justin Timberlake is a singer who took *NSYNC’s split very personally. Apparently, these two conventionally attractive people dated. And now, Dewan Tatum is reluctantly dishing about it. On an episode of “Watch What Happens Live,” the 36-yearold admitted that she briefly dated

Is it OK that I’m into Harry Styles now?

According to E!, the 23-year-old has never felt like he’s needed to define his sexuality. There’s nothing like a maybepansexual dude to get the ol’ engine revved up. “Being in a creative field, it’s important to be progressive,” he said in an interview with Bi-

Jenna Dewan Tatum dishes on dating Justin Timberlake

The “docuseries,” which E! calls “highly anticipated” appears to be a mash up of horror and reality television. It’s a real accomplishment, especially since those two things haven’t really been so seamlessly blended since “Blair Witch Project.” “I do feel pressured to not let anybody down,” she continues. “I am not totally innocent because I am keeping up this lifestyle. I can’t do this forever.” OK! The candid glimpses of her life seem overly scripted. It looks like it’s the youngest Jenner’s first time petting a wig, or getting out of a car, for example. I guess what I’m saying is that my theory is that Kylie Jenner is an alien creature inside the husk of a human and she’s trying to convince us otherwise. Frankly, I am of the opinion that she is doing a really poor job.

Here’s a rare image of Kylie in the wild, wearing a dur-ag for some reason.

zarre’s Dan Wootton. “I don’t feel like [my sexual orientation] is something I’ve ever felt like I have to explain about myself.” Yas! I mean, he’s reportedly dating a woman, Tess Ward, but I love that he thinks he’s so sexually free. Unfortunately, my imagined romance with Styles would be shortlived, because he doesn’t really imbibe in the sweet caress of booze. “It’s just not for me ... I’m not straight-edge or anything … but I like knowing I’m not going to be stressing about having to do something the next day.” Oh, well.

Derek Jeter doesn’t know a damn thing about fatherhood. A few months ago, Hannah Jeter — formerly of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit fame — announced on The Player’s Tribune she and Derek were expecting a daughter. And on Sunday, the couple stepped out for a ceremony to retire Derek’s jersey number at the Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. When a reporter asked whether Derek was ready for the challenges of being a dad in the press conference afterward, the father-to-be laughed (because fatherhood is a joke, get it?) and gave a

Timberlake after he broke up with Britney Spears. “We dated! Not that long. We were like, friends that then dated and we’re just really good friends

now.” But to be clear, this wasn’t a rebound fling or anything. “I was not the rebound! I was very clear not to be [a rebound].” The two met when Dewan Tatum worked as a backup dancer on his tour. I mean, Dewan Tatum is definitely Timberlake’s type: athletic, pretty, very defined chin area. Look at Jessica Biel and tell me otherwise. Anyway, everything worked out. Dewan Tatum is now married to Channing Tatum! Timberlake is married to Jessica Biel! And Britney, well: She’s doing the best of all. She’s suspended in some sort of permanent adolescence and has a hot 23-yearold boyfriend. Talk about hashtag goals.

Derek Jeter is woefully unprepared for fatherhood forceful “No!” Then he explained. Or, well, he tried to. “You know, I prided myself in my career to be prepared at all games. Any time I’m unprepared, it makes me uncomfortable,” he admitted. “I’m unpre-

pared. From everything people have told me, just do it and see what happens. People can give you advice but until you’re in it, you never really know what to expect.” Good luck with that one, Hannah.

Derek Jeter isn’t so sure about this whole fatherhood thing.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has a weird idea of fun

The Golden Globe winner had a blast making the difficult war thriller “The Wall.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Hopefully Aaron TaylorJohnson enjoys watching himself, because he is mostly what you see in “The Wall.” The actor’s latest is a stripped-down, intense war thriller about two soldiers (himself and John Cena) who get pinned down by a sniper after the end of the Iraq War. The trouble is Cena’s character is wounded early on, spending most of the film passed out. Taylor-Johnson’s solider has to hole up behind a blown-up school wall, talking to the sniper over radio and trying to find a way to kill him or at least survive.

I don’t want to assume that spending most of a movie acting by yourself is horrifying, but it does sound horrifying. [Laughs] It was daunting. I don’t know if I would have done it with any other filmmaker than Doug [Liman]. That came from the security of knowing it was his vision. My scene partner was whoever was behind the camera, be it the DP or Doug, shouting the off lines. OK, that does kind of sound fun, actually. It was extremely fun. That’s what I find fun. [Laughs]

GETTY

So you enjoy things that are difficult? Absolutely. I’ve always thought it’s good to be pushed outside your boundaries, put in uncomfortable positions. That’s when you learn more about your craft and about yourself. Coming off of “Nocturnal Animals,” I’d already learned a lot from that, too, about stepping out of my comfort zones. Are there other challenges you think you’d like to try, or do you try not to think that way? I’m writing something with my wife [Sam Taylor-Johnson, director of “Fifty Shades of Grey”]. That will be the biggest challenge so far. Every now and then I have a sense of panic

But you have a long history of acting in movies, so you have a leg up. Well, what really inspired the leap was being around Tom Ford [on “Nocturnal Animals”]. He comes to work everyday with a relentless sense of high expectations and perfection, and he doesn’t stop until he feels he’s got what he needs.

He doesn’t like to watch Another aspect of “The Wall” being a movie where you’re mostly the only actor onscreen is that, when you have to watch the finished film, you’re pretty much only staring at yourself for an hour and a half. Can you even watch yourself onscreen? Can you even watch “The Wall”? I’ve only seen the film at its premiere. “Nocturnal Animals” I probably saw a total of four times, and I don’t think I could ever see that again. But it’s really the experience of making movies that stays with me. That’s not what the audience experiences. I will never have what the audience experiences; I don’t know what that is. I only hope whatever my experiences of making these movies is what audiences will see onscreen. It’s a bizarre thing to explain, but that’s roughly how it feels.

30 THINGS TO DO

Activism in every scoop Times Square’s new ice cream pop-up I Scream! is not so sweet on Trump. EVA KIS @thisiskis

eva.kis@metro.us

I Scream! will be open all summer for your activist sweet-treat cravings. ALL PHOTOS BY RICARDO MANTILLA

The shop offers four ice cream flavors, plus a Mexican vanilla soft serve and four sundaes.

Feeling a little bitter about the state of the world? A new Times Square ice cream stand has some sweet new ways to protest President Trump’s policies. Get politically inspired at I Scream!, a delicious summer-long pop-up on Broadway Plaza between 43rd and 44th streets, offering activism with every scoop to the more than 300,000 people who come through Times Square every day. And its flavors go way beyond vanilla. One of the city’s best ice cream parlors Ice & Vice created nine politically charged options like Freeze Global Warming, a blend of concord grape and lavender, or dig into the equality-inspired sundae No Borders, featuring Mexican-chocolate brownie chunks and dulce de leche. Five percent of every purchase goes to causes including the ACLU, the Natural Resource Defense Council and Planned Parenthood, all organizations on the front lines against Trump’s biggest proposed policy changes. The stand is open sev-

en days a week, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. You’re not just screaming for joy here, either. Besides selling ice cream, I Scream! encourages customers to take a public stand by posting a selfie at the kiosk with a caption telling the world what makes them want to scream with #IScreamTSq. Each day, a Scream of the Day will be selected and shared on the side of the ice cream stand itself. “I Scream! came to

mind as the result of a play on words — ‘I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream’ — which related to both the singular and the collective of political opinion in action,” founder Chelsea Lipman says. “We’re all screaming about our own things, but we scream together to get things done.” Lipman, just 24 years old, was inspired to start the project after the Women’s March in January. “The passion at the

Women’s March was amazing, and it sparked in me a desire to do something, but I didn’t have a lot of money to give,” she says. What she does have is graphic-design skills, which she used to create the kiosk and pitch her idea to the Times Square Alliance, the nonprofit keepers of the Crossroads of the World. The choice of such a high-profile public space was completely intentional. While most people don’t come to Times Square for political reasons, it’s been a natural magnet for protest since way before the 2016 presidential election. Opposition to Trump’s policies has also politicized the city’s food scene, from food crawls supporting immigrantrun restaurants to a bar donating all profits to organizations fighting for causes threatened by the current administration. It’s a trend that Lipman is continuing, and hopes just a few more people will educate themselves as they hoist those scoops like Lady Liberty’s torch. “I hope to inspire others — including people who aren’t already politically active — to speak out, get involved, and put their money where their mouth is,” she says. “I hope people interact with this kiosk and realize that everyone’s voices can and should be heard.”

chambers and the muscle surrounding the lower right chamber becomes overly thickened. The “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” host’s emotional monologue began a national conversation about heart defects in infants. We talked to Dr. Peter Pastuszko, chief of pediatric

cardiovascular surgery for Mount Sinai Health System, to understand the condition everyone’s talking about but no one can really explain. Let’s talk about Jimmy Kimmel. What did you think of his monologue? I think it was informa-

tional. People have to understand that, in the grand scheme of things, compared to a lot of things that can happen to a newborn baby, heart defects are very rare. Something that Jimmy Kimmel’s son had, it’s only a little less than half a percent of population. What are the risk factors? Is it genetic? You can consider them random events. Meaning it’s not in a genetic sense that you inherited it from your mom or your dad or somebody else. It’s certainly not related to any environmental factors. So it’s not like you were exposed to anything, or alcohol, tobacco, drugs. If you see something on a prenatal ultrasound, is there anything that you can do before the birth to prepare? Not really. Allowing us to prepare the parents — that’s a lot better than when you have this brand new baby and are learning, right now, right then and there, that there’s something really wrong with the baby’s heart.

wellbeing What made the monologue relatable? What hit me the most in this monologue was, Jimmy Kimmel sounded like so many of the parents that I meet and talk to. It’s incredibly overwhelming, it’s incredibly emotional. All you want to do is just to hold this baby, and now he’s on this warmer bed, attached to a million different lines. It’s overwhelming. Like [Kimmel] said also, it’s a pre-existing condition, it’s something you have for the rest of your life. I’m not referring to the insurance issue part of it, but it is something you have to live with. Do you have any opinion on the insurance issue? I will second exactly what

he said. The kind of care people get in the United States is second to none. It’s sad that we have to think about whether kids like this would ever have to worry about getting this kind of healthcare for financial reasons, or for reasons other than just purely being able to care for them. I think that he was actually right by saying that in this country today in the 21st century, this shouldn’t be an issue. What else should people know about tetralogy of Fallot? To repeat what I said before, when people hear a story like this, everybody gets nervous, especially if you’re pregnant. People need to just keep in perspective, that these things are pretty rare. When you go in the ICU to see the baby after surgery or later on when they’re ready to go home, seeing parents and having them appreciate you this much. The way [Kimmel] spoke about the whole team — frankly, that’s why we do what we do.

When does Collins’ managerial hot seat start heating up? The Mets’ struggles have been emphasized by costly managerial mistakes. JOE PANTORNO @JoePantorno

joseph.pantorno@metro.us

On Saturday, New York Mets manager Terry Collins is set to manage his 1,013th game with the team, breaking a Mets franchise record for longest-tenured coach. But maybe he shouldn’t make it that far. Call it pre-emptive, call it panic, call it whatever you want, but it’s time for the Mets to take a good, hard look at the man leading their team in the dugout. Collins has constantly mismanaged the Mets over the past six years,

with the latest example coming on Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers. Up 8-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, starter Jacob deGrom was yanked after allowing a leadoff single to Domingo Santana on what was his 107th pitch. In came lefty Jerry Blevins, who immediately surrendered a home run to make it 8-5 before walking Eric Thames. Fernando Salas allowed another run on a Jesus Aguilar double before the inning ended. The Mets continued to provide some support for the bullpen, but every move Collins made was the wrong one. Salas put two men on before Josh Edgin hit another to load the bases. So with one out in the eighth, Collins called upon his im-

promptu closer Addison Reed to attempt a five-out save opportunity. Reed is filling in for Jeurys Familia, who underwent surgery to remove an arterial clot on Friday and will be sidelined for the foreseeable future. It didn’t go well. After allowing a tworun single to Hernan Perez, Reed gave up a threerun home run to Manny Pina to give the Brewers an 11-9 lead that they would close out in the top of the ninth. It was an improbable comeback, to say the least. Entering Sunday, MLB teams that were trailing by five or more runs entering the seventh inning or later were 29-3,389 over the last five seasons. That’s a .008 winning percentage.

Mets manager Terry Collins’ job status will only grow more uncertain if his team continues to struggle. GETTY IMAGES

That’s a fireable offense for most other MLB managers on struggling teams. But not the Mets. Entering Monday night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at 16-20, the Mets have been an utter disaster for a team that was expected to make a deep playoff run this season. Obviously, injuries have played a part in all this. The Mets currently

have nine players sidelined or on the disabled list and all of them are high-impact contributors. That can’t be the team’s scapegoat year after year, though. Injuries decimated the Mets last year and are a part of every team’s season, albeit not to this extent. It’s up to the manager to work with what he has — and there is still plenty of talent available on this team — and ensure that

they can at least close out games in which they are up five runs with six innings played. That doesn’t mean general manager Sandy Alderson is exempt from criticism for not preparing for a possible repeat of 2016. However, when it comes down to in-game decisions and the handling of his pitchers, the hot seat beneath Collins should be scalding right now.
