TRUMP ASKED COMEY TO CLOSE FLYNN PROBE

PLANE VANISHES OFF SOURCE: GARLAND NOT BAHAMAS, FOUR MISSING INTERESTED IN FBI JOB

President Donald Trump asked then-FBI Director James Comey to shut down an investigation into ties between then-White House national security adviser Michael Flynn and Russia, The New York Times reported on Tuesday, citing a Comey memo. “I hope you can let this go,” Trump told Comey, according to two people who read the memo, the Times reported. An

associate of Comey who has seen the memo told Reuters that the details of the document as reported by The New York Times were accurate. REUTERS

A small airplane with four people aboard has vanished en route to Florida from Puerto Rico and a search is underway near the Bahamas, the Coast Guard said. Crews were scouring the waters 37 miles east of Eleuthera, Bahamas, in an attempt to locate Jennifer Blumin and Nathan Ulrich, both from New York, and her two sons, ages 10 and 4, the Coast Guard said on its website. The MU-2B plane

was reported lost after failing to arrive on Monday at Titusville, Florida, 40 miles west of Orlando on Florida’s Atlantic Coast. It had departed Borinquen, Puerto Rico, at about 11 a.m. local time Monday. Miami Air Traffic Control reported losing radar and radio contact with the plane at 2:10 p.m. Monday. The Coast Guard said on Tuesday afternoon that they found a debris field near the Bermuda Triangle. REUTERS

U.S. appeals court judge Merrick Garland, turned away by the Senate last year for a Supreme Court post, is not interested in serving as FBI director, two sources said, even as the top Senate Republican recommended him for the job. Garland, the chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, has told people around him he “loves his job and is not interested in leaving the

judiciary,” said one of the sources familiar with the judge’s thinking. The two sources spoke on condition of anonymity. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he has mentioned Garland to President Donald Trump as a possible successor to James Comey, who Trump fired last week as FBI chief. REUTERS

SNAPCHAT-LIKE CAMERA FILTERS FOR INSTAGRAM

Facebook Inc.’s Instagram has souped up its camera with quirky face-tracking filters, adding another feature similar to one offered by social media rival Snap Inc.’s Snapchat. Instagram users will now be able to choose from eight filters including koala ears that move and twitch as well as math equations that spin to create humorous effects

for their photos or videos. Other new features include a rewind mode for videos, which will allow users to play video in reverse, and hashtag stickers to visit hashtag pages. Facebook has been amping up its camera tool to take on Snapchat’s features such as disappearing messages and face-tracking filters, which are hugely popular among its teenaged and millennial users. This week is already shaping up to be a chaotic week for the Trump White House after reports surfaced alleging that President Trump revealed highly classified information to top Russian officials and that former FBI Director James Comey wrote a memo after a meeting with the president in which the president allegedly encouraged Comey not to pursue an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s ties to Russia. Last week, Trump held a closed-door meeting with the Russian foreign minister and Moscow’s ambassador to the United States and allegedly revealed an Islamic State plot – the biggest plot to take

He called the president’s conversation with the Russians “appropriate, adding that POTUS couldn’t have revealed the source because he hadn’t been briefed to that extent. Everything you need to know about the WannaCry cyberattack Who is vulnerable? Anyone using Windows is vulnerable, experts said — Apple and Linux operating systems are not affected. That means anyone, from your home computer to hospitals or any company network.

By now, you’ve probably read about WannaCry, the ransomware responsible for cyberattacks worldwide that might be orchestrated by hackers in North Korea. But what exactly is it and who is at risk? We spoke with an expert from a Boston-area cybersecurity company: Jack Danahy, CTO of Barkly.

What is ransomware? “The most common forms of ransomware take advantage of a user executing a code or visiting a website, which will encrypt a variety of different kinds of content important to that user,” Danahy said. “Having done that, it throws up a screen that says, ‘If you ever want to see this data again, send me money.’” The data that is literally being held for ransom can be any file from text documents to

photos. If you don’t pay by the designated time — usually in Bitcoin, which is an anonymous currency — the data is deleted. Why is WannaCry so effective? “What makes WannaCry different and why it spreads so rapidly is that it takes advantage of a vulnerability in an earlier released version

of Microsoft software,” Danahy said. WannaCry uses an exploit (a sequence of commands that starts an attack) to take advantage of this vulnerable software. The exploit was released about two months ago by a group called Shadow Brokers, who said that they took this tool from the National Security Agency.

WannaCry is slowing down, so is there still reason to worry? In a word: Yes. There could be more attacks to come, Danahy said. Remember the exploit that made WannaCry so pervasive to so many different computers by taking advantage in the software’s vulnerability? “The people who released these exploits into the wild had gone silent for some time and just popped up again following WannaCry,” Danahy said. “We see that they’re now saying that they’re going to be selling new exploits starting in June.” KRISTIN TOUSSAINT

Dana-Farber Wants You to Know Your Moles: When You Should Be Concerned about Melanoma Melanoma cells

When it comes to skin growths that can lead to melanoma – the deadliest form of skin cancer – Dana-Farber Cancer Institute oncologist Elizabeth Buchbinder, MD, stresses the importance of both surveillance and a sense of history.

“Moles are formed when skin cells known as melanocytes grow in clusters, and most never cause any trouble,” Buchbinder explains. “The best way to stop melanoma early, before it can spread, is understanding what to look for.” If you develop moles, she says, watch them over time. Are they changing in shape, size, color, or texture? Is one changing faster than the others? Is it bumping out of the skin, or itching, bleeding, or hurting? If so, it is best to get this troublesome mole looked at by a dermatologist. Family history is also an important factor. There is a hereditary predisposition for melanoma, she stresses, so if your parents, siblings, or other close relatives have had the disease, you are at an increased risk, and should see a dermatologist regularly even if you don’t notice any new or suspicious moles. “A primary care physician will look for moles on your back and chest, but a dermatologist will look between your toes and underneath pockets of skin where they can hide,” says Buchbinder, an oncologist within the Center for Melanoma Oncology. “Dermatologists also use a dermatoscope, a magnifying light that can expose more concerning patterns in moles not visible to the eye, as well as how deeply the pigment of a mole is deposited in your skin.” Not every “bad” mole is easy to identify, Buchbinder warns – some can be skin-colored or pink and difficult to see in a mirror. For reasons like this, she advises following the “ABCDE” method recommended by the American

Academy of Dermatology (AAD) to self-screen monthly for melanoma and other skin cancers in moles and birthmarks: s A – Asymmetry, or when one half of the mark appears different than the other. s B – Border, when the mark has an irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined border. s C – Color, if the mark is varied from one area to the other. It might have shades of tan, brown, black, or be white, red, or blue. s D – Diameter. Melanomas are usually bigger than 6mm, or the size of a pencil eraser. In some cases, they can appear smaller. s E – Evolving, when a mole or mark looks different than others on your body, or different than it used to. To learn more about melanoma treatment and research, visit danafarber.org. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a principal teaching affiliate of the Harvard Medical School and is among the leading cancer research and care centers in the United States. It is a founding member of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, designated a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute. Could the legend of Kimye be coming to an end?

Are Kim and Kanye calling it quits? Kim Kardashian and Kanye West could be headed toward divorce. Or at least, that’s what some notthat-reputable sources say. With their third wedding anniversary coming up soon — oh my God, this has been the longest three years ever, right? — The Mirror is reporting that not only are they spending the day, but they might be on a trial split right now anyway. Because if a couple isn’t in the same room, that means they are not together any more. Didn’t you know? West, 39, has recently gone to Wyoming to find himself in the mountains, as you do, and to possibly work on a new album.

But maybe it’s more than that! “We’re all concerned that this could be a sign their marriage is on the rocks and that they want time apart,” a source says. “Kanye is in a very odd place in his life right now, so he’s happy to take a break. Kim convinced him that this was the best solution for him, as it would allow him

to take time out of the spotlight.” Oh, dear. I suppose we just wait and see, eh?

Brad Pitt says he doesn’t have secrets anymore, but that’s a lie, right? Brad Pitt talked to the Associated Press about his swollen ego — their words, not mine — and honestly, William Bradley? I see what you’re doing and I tire of your ways. In support of “War Machine,” the 53-yearold commits to being an open book for the second time this month, which maybe is too soon. “Hubris is a trap, and it’s the trap of every great nation that has been No. 1 for too long.” Um, OK. What are you talking about, my dude? “You start believing your own stink. Anytime I’ve gotten in trouble, it’s because of my own hubris.” Damn, must be

set to marry Andrew “Fergie” Ferguson — the “America’s Sweetheart” singer is opening up about the fact that A) She’s been secretly married this whole time and B) She’s about to get divorced. As she admits, she kind of lost her mind there for a second. “We secretly got married three weeks after we met on 2/14/2016,” she wrote. “It was and will forever be one of the happiest days of my

life… He is the greatest love of my life. He is my best friend ... You’ll always have my heart. You’ll always be my first husband.” OK, wow, lots to parse. To be clear, these two former crazy lovebirds met, then 12 days later were engaged, and ten days after that were secretly married. Love makes you do insane things, I guess. Better luck next time, bb.

Pretty standard behavior from this one.

hard to be a cis white male burdened with privilege. “I”ve got no secrets. I’ve got nothing to hide,” he continued. “We’re human, and I find the human condition very interesting. If we’re not talking about it, then we’re not getting better.” Oh, dear.

He’s really giving me MFA-in-Fiction vibes and I hate it! Just teasin,’ William Bradley. You know I’m here for you. I just know your PR people are behind this so I don’t love it as much as I would if I thought it was your idea.

Katy Perry talked to Ellen about peeing, for some reason about. But she did give up her secret for peeing in her Met Gala dress. Perry’s party trick? A female urinary device that allows women to urinate while standing up. It’s called a GoGirl. Perfect for when you’re wearing a gauze gown stained with the blood of your enemies and sitting down

just isn’t ideal — which appears to have been Perry’s situation. “There

was a lot of self-control, practice and GoGirls,” the 32-year-old said. “You know, those little contraptions where you then get to urinate standing up? I’ve used them in several music videos because I always find myself in this predicament where I have a very extravagant, lavish, unrealistic, unpractical costume on,” she continued. “That’s just me, I guess.” I’m not sure why the many trivial things that Katy Perry does count as news on the dark recesses of the internet. If only there was something I, gossip column writer that I am, could do. Hm.

Heath Ledger was much more than an actor A new film uncovers his quest to create. JENNIFER LOGUE @jenniferlogue

jennifer.logue@metro.us

More than nine years have passed since the untimely death of Heath Ledger. Best known for his iconic roles as Ennis in “Brokeback Mountain” and The Joker in “The Dark Knight” (which earned him an Academy Award posthumously), speculation continues to swirl around his passing, with many subscribing to the belief that he was dragged down to a dark place by his craft. A documentary his life and work, “I Am Heath Ledger,” is anything but dark, however, portraying Ledger as a passionate artist, chock full of “joie de vivre.” “He was having the time of his life — he was enjoying it. He was at the top of his game as far as he was concerned,” says

Murray says. Ledger’s family and long list of friends (including actor Naomi Watts and musician Ben Harper) provide commentary on his truly extraordinary life and career in the film. “So many people loved him, and we wanted the world to know,” Murray says. The documentary also provides inspiration to the artist in all of us to go out there and in Ledger’s own words, “not be afraid to fall.” “His energy was absolutely infectious and a big part of who he was,” Murray reflects. “His HEATH LEDGER creativity was somePHOTOGRAPHY thing he embraced daily and never took “We had access to this it for granted. filmmaker Derik Murray, who’d been interested in exploring Ledger’s life for some time. The documentary reveals many surprising details about the actor’s life — one being that acting was only a small part of his artistic output. Ledger burned even more brightly behind

the camera as a photographer and director. “His main goal was to become a director,” says Murray. “He was directing these music videos and was super-hands-on learning the craft and loved music. He even DJed at his house, and that wasn’t something that was widely known unless you

Boston’s beloved alt-rockers, The Pixies, are headed home this weekend. The band is in town for three nights to promote its new album, “Head Carrier,” which debuted last fall. After playing the House of Blues on Friday and Saturday, The Pixies will take the stage at the Paradise Rock Club on Sunday night. The Allston venue is where they etched out their sound while playing alongside bands like the Throwing Muses way back in the ’80s. Technically, The Pixies formed in Amherst when founding members Black Francis (aka Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV) and guitarist Joey Santiago met while attending college in 1986. But they made their name playing gigs in the city after linking up with drummer David Lovering and then-bassist Kim Deal. It was in Boston-area venues like T.T. the Bear’s, Chet’s Last Call and Green Street Station where The Pixies first showed off their blend of psychedelia, noise pop and surf rock. “We were a baby band out of Boston, trying to get a record deal and trying just to make it, and it was amazing,” says Lovering. “If I compare it to today I prefer back then. Playing in a band was always something I’ve always wanted to do.” The Pixies unique sound and the success of albums like “Surfer Rosa” and “Dolittle” eventually bought them a ticket out of Boston, allowing them

to tour the world together for six years. All of a sudden, then frontman Francis announced in a media interview that the band was breaking up — which was news to the other members. But when a possible reunion came in 2004, the band jumped at the chance, returning with a sold-out worldwide tour. They hit the road in America and Europe for the next seven years, until they got the itch to scratch out their first LP since reuniting, “Indie Cindy,” released in 2014.

The Pixies are ready to rock. TRAVIS SHINN

“It wasn’t until 2011, seven years later, we felt needed to do another,” says Lovering. “We realized that was longer than we were initially a band and it freaked us out. We wanted to prove we’re a viable band and can write new stuff.” In the midst of recording the album, bassist Deal abruptly left, causing a rift that the band wasn’t sure they could ever fill. “When she left it was horrible,” Lovering says.

“We didn’t know what to do. For an entire day, we just sat in studio in silence.” But eventually Lovering, Santiago and Francis decided they would move forward as The Pixies. Enter bassist Paz Lenchantin. The Argentinian-born, Los Angeles-raised musician first joined up as a touring bassist, learning 50 songs in two weeks at the last minute. But Lenchantin didn’t mind because a little part of her always knew she was meant to be a Pixie. “I remember it as the most important day of my life,” she says. Lenchantin had been touring with another band, but it didn’t take long until she was “pixified,” as Lovering puts it. She’s now “monogamous” with The Pixies. “I’m totally happy with this being my final band,” she says. “All bands lead me to this point.” If you haven’t already scooped tickets, you’re probably out of luck. The three Boston shows have been sold-out for months, though there are several dozen available at ticket resale prices if you’re OK with anteing up about double face value. Fret not, though. Northeast fans have a few more chances to catch the Pixies on the second leg of the “Head Carrier” tour — the band takes the stage in New Haven, Connecticut, in New York and in their real hometown, Northampton, in September.

home Local Real Estate Agent Guarantees to Sell Your Boston Area Home or Buy it for Cash Boston - Every month, thousands of homeowners are faced with the stressful dilemma of whether to buy first or sell first. You see, if you buy before selling, you could run the risk of owning two homes. Or, just as bad, if you sell first, you could end up homeless. It’s what insiders in the industry call the Real Estate Catch 22, and it’s an extremely anxious position to find yourself in. This financial and emotional tightrope is one you usually have to walk alone because most agents have no way of helping you with this predicament. But one local realtor is using a unique Guaranteed Sale Program which solves this dilemma. This program guarantees the sale of your present home before you take possession of your new one. If your home doesn’t sell in 120 days, they will buy it from you themselves for the previously agreed price ensuring that you never get caught in the Real Estate Catch

22. Before you hire any professional, you should research the market to find out who can do the best job for you. One of Boston’s most iconic and prestigious neighborhoods, Beacon Hill is situated just north of the Common and lined with multimillion-dollar homes. The Beacon Hill Garden Club’s annual Hidden Gardens tour gives attendees the chance to see the incredible outdoor spaces that lie behind these lavish residences — and sometimes even get a peek inside the homes themselves. This year’s can’t-miss botanical event of the spring takes place on Thursday, rain or shine. Tickets, which cost $45 in advance and $55 the day of the tour, allow each attendee entrance into between 10 and 12 gardens, as well as complimentary refreshments in Moseley Hall at the Church of the Advent.

Self-guided, the Hidden Gardens tour takes visitors all around Beacon Hill on foot as they explore treasured gardens tucked away behind some of Boston’s oldest real estate. The Garden Club anticipates upwards of 2,500 tour attendees this year, which should provide a nice economic boost for area shops and restaurants.

Urban gardening takes on a whole new meaning in the historically unique spaces carved between, behind and on top of the buildings of Beacon Hill. Thanks to the time of year, tour attendees

will see gardens at their lushest, including purple wisteria overhead in full bloom. Some neighborhood residents who are not members of the Garden Club also allow their gardens to be viewed without entry as an extra perk on the tour, referred to as “ribbon gardens.” The Beacon Hill Garden Club, which has been in operation for close to 90 years celebrates the height of spring annually with this tour. According to the Club, “From its first garden tour since the club was founded in 1928, club members have opened their gardens every year on the third Thursday in May, even through the Depression and World War II.”

Things to watch for in ECF Game 1 vs. Cavaliers tonight

The Celtics begin their quest to dethrone LeBron and the reigning champs tonight. JAMES TOSCANO @Jimmy_Toscano sports@metro.us

There is a thought that the Celtics have hit their basketball ceiling this season. Beat the Wizards to punch your ticket to the Eastern Conference Finals, and then hope LeBron James and the Cavs have at least some mercy on your souls — the pundits say. But you won’t find anybody within the Celtics organization feeling that way, even if it does feel like a long shot. As of Wednesday, the

29.2

LEBRON JAMES’ PPG AVERAGE AGAINST THE CELTICS THIS SEASON Cavs were favored at -550 to win the series, according to the online sports gambling website Bovada. So will the King of the Eastern Conference, in LeBron, have his way with the Celtics — led by the King of the Fourth starting tonight (8:30 p.m., TNT)? Not if the Celtics play the way they did in the late third and majority of the fourth quarter against the Wizards in Game 7. Isaiah Thomas hit the big shots everybody is accustomed to seeing from him, and role players Kelly Olynyk, Marcus Smart, and rookie Jaylen Brown stepped it up in major ways. Olynyk looked unconscious out there, hitting 10-of-14 shots on his way to 26 points — 14 of which came in the fourth. Smart hit two “no-no-no-yes!” 3’s that really got the C’s moving (and he also finished

tied a team-high plus14), while Brown played 20 minutes of turnoverfree basketball. So can this team prove everybody wrong against the defending Eastern Conference champs? We’ll get our first taste tonight at TD Garden.

starts with 1ItLeBron

Listen, if there was an answer to the LeBron James question, he wouldn’t be looking to clinch his seventh — yes, seventh — straight NBA Finals appearance. The Celtics are going to try as they might, but stopping James is a pipe dream. Slowing him? That’s possible. But Paul Pierce isn’t walking through that door, folks. It will take a group effort. Jae Crowder has looked a step or two behind at points in the postseason, and he can’t be tasked with guarding James from start to finish. Enter Smart and Brown. If you had to pick a “weak” spot in James’ game, you’d point to his jump shooting, historically speaking. Get up under him and force him into a long range shot. If he drives? Foul, foul foul. It may not be pretty, but James was a career-low 67 percent from the line in the regular season. No easy baskets.

end 2Itwithdoesn’t LeBron

Yes, James put the team on his back against the Warriors last postseason. But please do not forget the insanely clutch shots from Kyrie Irving, arguably the second best player in the Eastern Conference. We already know that Irving and Avery Bradley are going to toe-to-toe in this series. Bradley came up huge offensively for Boston at times, but his priority is going to be to limit Irving the way first team All-Defense players do. With so much focus on James, the Celtics are re-

ally counting on Bradley. The Wizards rode John Wall and Bradley Beal to a Game 7. If Irving has similar success, it’s going to spell doom for the Celtics because James and Kevin Love are going to contribute in ways the Wizards forwards didn’t.

like you’ve 3Act been there

Easy for the Cavs to say. Their roster is made up of plenty of players who have been there and done that. The Celtics? Not so much. This is all new to their best players. If the C’s want a chance in this series, they can’t just be happy to be there — or too excited to be there. The Celtics only turned the ball over eight times in Game 7, compared to 15 for the Wizards. Were they amped up? Yes. But they didn’t let it affect them negatively. Every possession will count even more against the Cavs. “We got to get ready for the defending champs and we know that,” Thomas said after Monday’s Game 7 win. “We know it’s going to be tough, but at this point anything can happen and we really believe it.”

The Celtics erased their ugly NBA Draft Lottery history Tuesday. MATT BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

For the first time in the modern era of the NBA Draft, the Celtics will pick No. 1 overall. The 76ers slid into the top three of the draft lottery Tuesday night as NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum read the picks to a nationally televised audience, and Celtics fans immediately had flashbacks to 1997 and 2007 when they were not rewarded. But the C’s made it to the final three, and then Tatum read that No. 3 would be the 76ers, No. 2 would be the Lakers, and No. 1 would be the Celtics. “It’s pretty good. It’s a pretty good time to be a Celtics fan, an elated Wyc Grousbeck, the Governor and Managing Partner of the Celtics, told ESPN. “I wish the draft was right now so we could get it going. The draft will take place on Thursday, June 22 in Brooklyn. The 2017 draft is considered by

many to be one of the best drafts in years. Washington guard Markelle Fultz is the consensus “best player in the draft, with UCLA guard Lonzo Ball and Kansas swingman Josh Jackson in the mix.

Guard heavy The issue with this draft for the Celtics is that it is point guard loaded. Isaiah Thomas has more than earned a max contract in this playoff run and all signs are pointing toward him stick-

25

THE CELTICS HAD A 25 PERCENT CHANCE OF LANDING THE TOP PICK ing around for a while. Thomas is just 28-yearsold, so he’s the PG of Celtics present and future. That said, Danny Ainge doesn’t care much for position restrictions. He’s a “small ball lover dating back to his days as head coach of the Phoenix Suns, when he would sometimes trot out a lineup with four guards. The Celtics could absolutely

take one of the elite point guards in this draft and place him in a lineup with Thomas. The NBA has never been more of a guardheavy league than it is today, so we could see the Celtics go small next month.

Trade coming? The trade rumors involving the Celtics and this pick are going to be hotter than the temps in Boston this week as now the rest of the league knows what pick it’s dealing with. Ainge flirted with bringing in the Pacers’ Paul George and/or the Bulls’ Jimmy Butler at the trade deadline in February, but someone got cold feet. Of note, Larry Bird is no longer running the operation in Indy – which means the Pacers may be more open to trading George (who Bird was reportedly attached to). George is reportedly hell-bent on going to the Lakers in free agency next summer, however, so it would be a gamble for Ainge to deal away this pick for someone who could simply be a rental. Butler seems like a more logical choice for the Celtics.
