President Donald Trump on Wednesday will interview four candidates for the position of director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters. Spicer, who was aboard Air Force One with Trump, said the president would meet with acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating, former Connecticut Senator Joe
Lieberman and former senior FBI official Richard McFeely. The position was left vacant after Trump fired James Comey. REUTERS
Islamic State militants are planting bombs near front doors in Mosul to prevent civilians leaving, as Iraqi forces make their final push against the jihadists after months of fighting. Trapped in a shrinking area of the city, the militants are using the several hundred thousand civilians under their control as human shields to avoid being targeted or perhaps tarnish what Iraqi leaders describe as imminent victory.
Backed by a U.S.-led coalition, Iraqi forces have made gains since opening a new front in northwest Mosul this month and have now dislodged Islamic State from all but about 5 square miles of the city. The militants still control the Old City, where they are expected to make their last stand in the densely populated, narrow streets that are impassible for armored vehicles, forcing Iraqi forces to advance on foot. Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that U.S. President Donald Trump had not divulged any secrets during a meeting in Washington with Russian officials and offered to prove it by supplying Congress with a transcript. But a leading U.S. Republican politician said he would have little faith in any notes Putin might supply. Two U.S. officials said on Monday Trump had disclosed classified
information about a planned Islamic State operation to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov when they met last week, plunging the White House into a fresh controversy just four months into Trump’s tenure. Trump has defended his decision to discuss intelligence with the Russians. REUTERS

GOOGLE CHALLENGES APPLE’S SIRI

Alphabet Inc’s Google said on Wednesday it would make its digital assistant available on Apple Inc’s iPhone, making a play for the higher end of the smartphone market and challenging Apple’s Siri feature on its own devices. The announcement heralds a step by Google, whose Android system runs on the majority of the world’s smartphones, to get a foothold on Apple’s phones,
which have smaller market share but are used by people who tend to spend more on technology. It comes as Google, Apple and Amazon.com Inc are competing to establish the dominant voice-powered digital assistant, which many in the industry believe will supplant keyboards and touch screens as a primary way that users interact with technology. Harvard Black Commencement is a chance to celebrate students’ families, organizers say Student organizers helped put together Harvard’s first university-wide grad school Black Commencement, to take place May 23. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT
Kristin Turner knows that her graduation from Harvard University will be an exciting moment not just for her, but for her entire family — and they’ll get the chance to see her cross the stage twice. Two days before the school’s official commencement, Turner will participate in Harvard’s first university-wide Black Commencement for graduate students. Turner, a Harvard Law School student and president of the Harvard Black Law Students Association, helped organize the event, called Black Commencement 2017. “It’s an opportunity to create space for typically underrepresented students who have definitely achieved so many things,” she said. “It’s an opportunity to celebrate ourselves

than Harvard’s 366th Commencement on May 25, she said, because it’s an event for her family. “For the older members of our family, there’s
she added. Though this event is a first for Harvard grad schools, it’s not a new concept. Harvard College has had a Black Commencement in the past, and black ceremonies have been held at Stanford University, University of Washington and more. Still, as news of the ceremony has spread, there’s been some backlash. Comments on articles asked, “What if white students did this?” A Washington Times editorial called it a “racially segregated” ceremony. But organizers assure it’s not meant to be separatist. “It was never created to be exclusionary,” Turner said. “If anything, it was created to fill a gap that we saw and to be as inclusive as possible.”

Aaron Hernandez did not leave a suicide note for his rumored prison lover, the former NFL star’s fiancĂŠe said in an interview with Dr. Phil McGraw on Tuesday, and she also denied rumors that he was gay. Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez spoke about the rumors on the “Dr. Philâ€? show on Tuesday. She said that Hernandez told her that he wasn’t gay. “I don’t know where this came from,â€? she said. “It’s embarrassing in a sense. It’s hurtful, regardless of if it’s true or not.â€? Dr. Phil asked her if she brought up the rumors about his sexuality with Hernandez in passing or if she confronted him about being gay. “You never approach any situation by accusing,â€? she said. “So I asked, he told me [that it wasn’t true] and that was it.â€? After it was reported that Hernandez had an affair with fellow prisoner, 22-year-old Kyle Kennedy, a lawyer for Kennedy said that the inmate believed one of the multiple suicide notes found in Hernandez’s cell was addressed to him. “My client believes one of the letters was written to him,â€? Kennedy’s lawyer, Larry Army Jr., said during a news conference in April. “This is coming from his own knowledge of the relationship that he and Hernandez shared and from someone on the inside who indicated that the letter was for him.â€? Army declined to name the “person on the inside.â€? In her interview with Dr. Phil, Jenkins-Hernandez said that no note was left for Kennedy. “According to Kennedy’s lawyer, Aaron reportedly wrote Kyle a note. Is that true?â€? Dr. Phil asked.
“A suicide note, in a sense?â€? Jenkins-Hernandez responded. “No, that’s not accurate. ‌ There’s nothing for Kyle Kennedy.â€? Jenkins-Hernandez said that there were notes left for her, her and Hernandez’s daughter and Hernandez’s lawyers. She said that Hernandez had never mentioned Kennedy and she never heard of him at all before those reports. In a statement released Tuesday evening via his lawyer, Kennedy said that he wanted to “be clear that at no time have I seen

His death was ruled a suicide by authorities, but in an earlier segment from her two-part interview with Dr. Phil, Jenkins-Hernandez said that she did not believe he killed himself.

By 2030, Boston will need at least 53,000 more housing units than it currently has in order to keep up with its growing population, city officials project. By 2050, another 42,000 on top of that. Where will these homes fit into Boston’s 49 square miles? That’s one question that the city’s “Imagine Boston 2030 plan aims to answer. The city released on Thursday the second iteration of the “Imagine Boston 2030 draft plan, which was crafted with the help of more than 14,000 residents who added their voices to topics such as affordable housing, climate change and technology. This is Boston’s first citywide plan in 50 years, so it addresses multiple issues. At the core, it seems, is the growth that the city will see and what that means the Boston of the future will look like. “This new draft of ‘Imagine Boston 2030’ takes a careful and proactive approach to making sure that all Bostonians benefit from the historic growth that is happening in our city, Mayor Marty Walsh said in a statement. “As we continue to make investments to expand access to opportunity, we also want to make sure that people can afford to stay in neighborhoods [where] they live — in the neighborhoods they helped build. Enhance Existing Neighborhoods Current neighborhoods could get a revamp under this draft plan with investments in open spaces and arts as well as ameni-
ties like healthy food options and drug stores. The plan also aims to create newly developed housing that is responsible to area incomes and put in place proactive anti-displacement policies. The plan points to Upham’s Corner as an example of this kind of enhancement. Encourage a Mixed-Use Core “Imagine Boston 2030 wants to make the core of the city more vibrant and open to additional uses on nights and weekends rather than being all industry and commerce. That means areas like Downtown and Longwood would see job growth as well as new housing so residents can be close to their jobs, the city said. Expand Neighborhoods The “edges of existing neighborhoods need more love, the city says, in order to “stitch together the physical fabric of the city. This would help alleviate housing pressure affecting the existing neighborhoods, the plan notes. The city also aims to develop more job opportunities in these overlooked areas by developing offices and industrial spaces to accommodate residents. Building up the transportation options will make these areas more easily accessible, also. Six areas are highlighted as “expanded neighborhoods in which the city is guiding growth: Sullivan Square, Newmarket and Widett Circle, Fort Point Channel, Suffolk Downs, Readville, and Beacon Yards.

Dr. Feelgood: How one woman’s hospital experience led to mobile nail-care business Clients enjoying ManiCare services. PROVIDED
Entrepreneur behind ManiCare brings a salon to women who can’t get to one by themselves. AD AMOROSI
Kate Arian isn’t just a woman who does nails. Her company, ManiCare, does give manicures and pedicures to the hospitalized and homebound, but the New Jersey native and former marketing executive for L’Oreal found a circuitous route to nail-care entrepreneurialism. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 2011, her cystic fibrosis (CF) required a double lung transplant, with a long recovery afterward. While hospitalized, she found that care for women beyond the medical – feeling beautiful, tending to one’s daily regimen – went out the window. With that need in mind, she started ManiCare in 2015 and never looked back. Based in Manhattan, the traveling salon now offers its services in Philly, Boston, across the East Coast and in Cleveland and Chicago.
treatments. Feeling and looking your personal best is a very empowering and motivating thing. It can restore dignity and humanity. Sometimes, unfortunately, it’s all you can do for someone who is very ill.
Q: How long after your surgeries did you stew before starting ManiCare?
Q: What is the age range of those who use your services?
A: I had the idea for ManiCare while recovering from surgery, but I did actually go on to hold two corporate jobs before becoming the full-time founder and CEO. I had the ManiCare website up, though, within a month of returning home in post-transplant mode in 2011.
A: Our younger demographic is the new and expecting mothers who like our services while on bed rest or in the hospital after birth – 35 to 55 is probably the most common age range. We also have many elderly users – the oldest recurring clients are 97 and 100.
Q: Are you used to
pampering yourself, and what did not having those amenities in the hospital do to your spirit?
A: [Laughs] I have a “fancy disposition” my mom says. I have always relished a nice outfit, jewelry and beauty
Q: You give a portion of your proceeds to various charities. Have you ever been attached to any charitable endeavor before this? A: My parents run a charity to help patients with CF and their families afford medical care not covered by insurance and/ or lifestyle costs associated with their medical burdens. I was taught from a young age about giving back – both from my family and at my Jewish day school – and throughout all of my own challenges, I was always aware that there were those less fortunate.
Q: What is your personal motto when it comes to all this? A: Face life with a little guts and a lot of glitter … and when “I” is replaced by “we,” even “illness” becomes “wellness.” To learn more about ManiCare services, visit mani-care.com.

U.S. arrests of suspected illegal immigrants rose by nearly 40 percent in the first 100 days of Donald Trump’s presidency, following executive orders that broadened the scope of who could be targeted for immigration violations, according to government data released on Wednesday.
The acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Thomas Homan said that arrests by his agency jumped to 41,318 between January 22 of this year and the end of April, up from 30,028 arrests in roughly the same period last year. Of those arrested almost two-thirds had criminal convictions. But there was also a significant jump - of more than 150 percent - in the number of immigrants not convicted of further crimes arrested by ICE: 10,800 since the beginning of the year compared to 4,200 noncriminal arrests in the same period in 2016. “Those that enter the country illegally, they do violate the law, that is a criminal act,” Homan said on the call, while emphasizing that immigrants who pose a threat to national security or have
Barack Obama was also criticized for deporting a large number of immigrants, most of them were recent border crossers apprehended entering the country illegally. Deportations under Trump have actually fallen by 12 percent compared to the same period under Obama, Homan said, as more people arrested in the interior typically have more complicated cases that can get slowed down in the backlogged immigration court system.

RALLYING THE REPUBLICANS When Democrats talk to Republicans here in D.C., they rarely use gentle tones. The bitter feud between the two major parties was made no better by the vicious 2016 election and the Democrats’ electoral collapse. Accordingly, ever since Inauguration Day, Dems have flung relentless curses at their political opponents — even if decorum has kept most of the profanity muted. But now from Capitol Hill to K Street, an unexpectedly gentler call is echoing. It is faint, but day by day more congressional Democrats are pleading with any Republicans who will listen: Help us. Help with what, you say? The Dems want help getting a net around the Trump administration and this whole nasty mess about the Russians meddling in the election. They want GOPers to join their campaign for an independent counsel to oversee the FBI investigation. They want their col-

leagues across the aisle to let the president know he will effectively be a man without a party if he does not cooperate with the probe. In short, in political terms, they want the moon and the stars. And they might — just might — get it. With each new revelation (and denial by Team
Trump) you can feel the tremors rattling through Republicanland. Sure, they enjoy holding the House of Representatives, the Senate and the White House, and they know that gives their party immense power. But they also know the punishment from voters could be extremely damaging if they are perceived to be helping cover up some screwy cloak-and-dagger scheme. Mind you, I said, “perceived. We have no proof yet that the Trump group, writ large, did anything wrong. But the
drumbeat for a fair, open and thorough investigation is getting louder and could soon be deafening — drowning out all attempts by the president or his party to talk about anything else. And let’s face it, President Trump has not exactly charmed his own party’s rank and file. Given those circumstances, yeah — some Republicans are showing some inclination to listen to the Democratic pleas. And if enough do, this storm may not easily pass the White House — but could rage and rage.

Democrats try to force vote on independent Russia probe Democrats have been pushing for a special prosecutor or independent investigation of possible tampering in the 2016 election and links between Trump’s associates and Moscow as the Republican campaigned for president. REUTERS
Democratic lawmakers said Wednesday they would try to force a vote in the House of Representatives on forming an independent commission to investigate possible Russian influence on the 2016 election, saying Republicans could not be trusted to thoroughly investigate President Donald Trump. Reps. Elijah Cummings of Maryland and
Eric Swalwell of California introduced a bill in December 2016 and again in January 2017 seeking to establish a 12-member, bipartisanappointed independent commission to investigate the matters. Russia has denied that it sought to meddle in the U.S. vote, and Trump has pushed back against such assertions. The Republican lead-

All you need is sunscreen and your CharlieCard. MEGAN JOHNSON
Just because you’re without a car doesn’t mean you have to be stuck jumping through sprinklers with the neighborhood kids to cool off this summer. There are plenty of awesome beaches in the Boston area that are reachable with nothing but your good old CharlieCard. Here’s a roundup of some of our favorites.
Revere Beach Pizza, soft serve and sunshine: Revere Beach is that classic stuff that summer dreams are made of. MBTA Blue Line to Revere Beach
Constitution Beach Score some sun with Eastie’s finest at Constitution, where you can
catch some rays as the planes fly into Logan Airport. The beach earns bonus points for the great playground for kids, as well as a Dunkin Donuts right by the entrance.

Spectacle Island Just a 20-minute ferry ride from the mainland, it feels like a million miles away from the city. New England cuisine is at its best when the warm weather finally hits. From the region’s second to none seafood to its iconic cold beverages, there’s something to satisfy every local. Here are five quintessential New England treats you have to try this summer.
1
Del’s Frozen Lemonade
Take a bite out of the summer heat with this Ocean State favorite. Del’s Frozen Lemonade officially launched in 1948 as a quaint stand in Cranston, and now boasts dozens of shops located around Rhode Island and Massachusetts. For those looking for an extra kick, Del’s partnered with Narragansett to create twostyles of shandy, mixing their iconic lemonade with Gansett’s lager for a perfect warm weather boozy beverage. Various locations, Rhode Island and Mass., dels.com
2
Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream
The Vermont-based ice cream company is beloved by not just New England, but the entire country. Whether
you’re grabbing a pint of Chocolate Cherry Garcia from the grocery store or scooping up a cone from any of their shops located across the nation, indulging in Ben & Jerry’s is never a bad time. Looking for a road trip? Take the kids to Waterbury this summer for a tour of the brand’s factory. Various locations, benjerry. com
3
Lobster rolls
Lobster rolls are synonymous with summer in New England, and everybody has their own take on this iconic dish. Whether it’s warmed up and drenched in butter or cold and lathered in mayo, you can’t go wrong with this crustacean-filled sandwich. If you don’t mind waiting in line, head to Revere Beach and try the lobster roll at Kelly’s Roast Beef, a mouthwatering combination of diced celery, mayo and a ton of lobster meat. Kelly’s Roast Beef, 410 Revere Beach Blvd., Revere, kellysroastbeef.com
4
Frappes
A New England phenomenon, frappes
are not to be confused with milkshakes, even though they’re pretty much the same thing anywhere else you go in the country. In these parts, though, a frappe is a blend of ice cream, milk and sometimes flavoring. The local version of a milkshake is similar, just without ice cream. Got it? Good. Try the fanfavorite vanilla frappe at Lizzy’s. New England is weird. Lizzy’s, 29 Church St., Cambridge, or 367 Moody St., Waltham, lizzysicecream. com
5
Fenway Franks
A summertime trip to the home of the Red Sox isn’t complete until you’ve gotten a Fenway Frank. The beloved Boston dish beat out every other ballpark’s menu during this year’s MLB Hot Dog Madness challenge by the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council. It’s not hard to see why. What could be better than a steamed Kayem beef frank topped with relish, spicy brown mustard and onions on a New England-style, topsplit bun? Fenway Park, 4 Yawkey Way, Boston, boston.redsox.mlb.com

Boston’s best roofdecks and outdoor patios The Rooftop@Revere recently remodeled its stylish outdoor lounge. PHOTOS PROVIDED
Where to drink and eat al fresco this summer. SARAH SWEENEY
Boston does its best work in the summer. The students are gone, the train cars are less crowded, and the weather works its magic on both wardrobes and attitudes. Everybody wants to be outside, of course, maximizing those precious few days of freedom until the cold inevitably returns. But until then, there are roof-decks to relax on, patios to people-watch, plus plenty of food and drink to go round. Here are some of the best spots to get your al fresco on around town.
Coppersmith Skip the outdoor patio and head right to the Airdeck, this Southie restaurant’s rooftop featuring a vintage Airstream trailer refashioned into a craft beer and cocktail bar. Grab a savory pimiento cheese sandwich and the Sweet Tease cocktail with sweet tea vodka, peach liqueur, lemon ginger, simple syrup and soda water ($12). 40 W 3rd St., South Boston, coppersmithboston.com
Felipe’s A few years ago, this Harvard Square taqueria moved spaces and debuted its glorious new rooftop bar and lounge, the perfect place to double fist a burrito and margarita, all while watching a scenic Cambridge sunset. Just make sure to get there before 5 p.m., when the working crowd descends in droves to blow off some steam and munch on Mexican fare. 21 Brattle St., Cambridge, harvardsq.felipestaqueria. com
Grab your friends and hang outside at Ocean Prime.
Rooftop@Revere After a recent $28 million remodeling job, the Revere Hotel opened its stylish rooftop pool and lounge again for the season, complete with a full bar, new outdoor seating and a menu featuring
fruity creations like white peach and watermelon salad ($12) as well as classic New England favorites, like the lobster roll, made with a shallot aioli on a buttery brioche roll ($25). Did we mention there’s a pool? It’s like you’re in L.A. but right in the heart of the Back Bay. 200 Stuart St., Boston, reverehotel.com
Ocean Prime If mingling with the in-crowd is your thing, you’ll want to hit Ocean Prime’s patio, which debuts at the popular seafood and steak house on June 1. A regular hotspot for Boston’s top athletes, the Seaport restaurant features live music, plenty of prime cut steaks and fresh fare from the sea, as well as one of Boston’s most Instagrammable cocktails, Berries & Bubbles, a vaporous dry ice drink with Belvedere citrus vodka, marinated berries, house-made sour, and Domaine Chandon Brut ($16). 140 Seaport Blvd., Boston, ocean-prime.com

Bill Burr isn’t sure how to roast Big Papi The comic talks roasting David Ortiz, Gronk and the ugly side of sports. MATT JUUL As a diehard Boston sports fan, comedian Bill Burr is having a pretty tough time coming up with jokes about hometown heroes like Big Papi and Rob Gronkowski, who’ll share the dais at the “Roast of David Ortiz” on June 22. Although the 48-yearold Canton native isn’t sure how he’ll poke fun at the Boston slugger and his famous pals, he has no trouble taking aim at the racist Red Sox fans who’re giving locals a bad rap. Let’s just say the always-irreverent comic has a few choice words for these shameless attendees. Ahead, Burr breaks down his lack of a game plan for the upcoming roast, his favorite Big Papi moments and his thoughts on the recent controversies at Fenway. Are you excited or intimidated to roast Big

Papi? Neither, I’m confused. I’m not intimidated. I don’t have to fight the guy. Everyone on the dais has won championships. They all have rings. I don’t have a problem with any of them, so I’m really trying to figure out what there is to roast. You don’t typically do roasts. Is this a comedy format you enjoy? I only do it when it’s a good friend of mine. This is like an exception because the Red Sox have done stuff for me, and I’ve done benefits and stuff like that. They wanted me on this thing, so obviously I’m going to do it. But human-beingto-human-being, I’ve got nothing against this guy. We’ve never hung out, so it’s going to be a little challenging. Local Real Estate Agent Guarantees to Sell Your Boston Area Home or Buy it for Cash Boston - Every month, thousands of homeowners are faced with the stressful dilemma of whether to buy first or sell first. You see, if you buy before selling, you could run the risk of owning two homes. Or, just as bad, if you sell first, you could end up homeless. It’s what insiders in the industry call the Real Estate Catch 22, and it’s an extremely anxious position to find yourself in. This financial and emotional tightrope is one you usually have to walk alone because most agents have no way of helping you with this predicament. But one local realtor is using a unique Guaranteed Sale Program which solves this dilemma. This program guarantees the sale of your present home before you take possession of your new one. If your home doesn’t sell in 120 days, they will buy it from you themselves for the previously agreed price ensuring that you never get caught in the Real Estate Catch
22. Before you hire any professional, you should research the market to find out who can do the best job for you. When interviewing agents, find out what kind of guarantee they are willing to give you with respect to the selling of your home. Unfortunately, you’ll find that most agents simply cannot make such a guarantee. To help you learn more about this program and how it can make your move less stressful, a FREE special report has been prepared entitled “How to Avoid Getting Stuck with Two Homes”. To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report call toll-free 1- 800-597-1519 and enter 1022. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I was living in New York at the time, and just to watch Yankee fans at sports bars, watching their shoulders slump when he came to the plate, the way we used to when anyone of their great players would step up there. I was in New York City when we lost in ’99. I was there when we lost in ’03. And I was there when we were down 0-3 in 2004. I remember this New York City cop laughing at me because of my hat. I couldn’t wait to run into him again, but I never saw him again. That still kills me. What about Gronk? All of them are the same. They step up in big moments and win championships. I think Gronk plays up that whole Gronk thing. You can’t be a moron and memorize a playbook. Carol Kane on the hopeful world of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” Why the legend thinks season 3 is the best yet. RACHAEL VAUGHAN CLEMMONS
The upcoming season of Tina Fey’s hit “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” (back this Friday) will take on Kimmy’s matriculation to college, Titus’ reflection on his career and romances and — hold up, Lillian is running for office? We spoke to Carol Kane, who plays kooky free spirit Lillian, about how the brilliantly funny series balances an upbeat outlook with serious issues, and what’s in store for our favorite stoop crone. I really love Lillian because she is so strange but really endearing. What is it that attracts you to these kooky characters? A big thing about Lillian is her passion, what she believes in she’ll just go to the ground for. She’ll do anything. And also her

lack of being able to edit herself [laughs]. Whatever she thinks comes out her mouth. She’s very brave. She doesn’t really care what anybody thinks of what she says or does. I admire that about her. I’m much more self-conscious about what I say or do than Lillian. The gentrification story line last season was subtle but powerful. And the show does a really good job of balanc-

ing being funny with bringing awareness around an issue. And that is going to get enhanced this year, because at the end of last season someone came to [Lillian’s] door and said, “If it really means that much to you,
why don’t you run for office?” And I’m taking that on. I do run for office, so my fight against gentrification becomes more official and louder. I also meet a special someone through that fight. I meet a sort of archenemy who becomes a beloved person in my life. The show never reveals what part of New York its taking place in exactly. But you film in Brooklyn right?
We film in Brooklyn and I think that gentrification is huge in the city. When I was young and growing up in the city, every neighborhood was so specific and had its little community that was very well defined, and now you get on the subway at 72nd on the West Side and you go all the way down to SoHo and you get off the subway and you see the exact same bank and the exact same store as when you got
There’s a lot of positivity that’s depicted. The show features a much more hopeful New York than the one that exists in this current political climate. It’s hard to have a lot of hope right now. But you know, people are fighting. People are fighting for their rights and always will be. Each individual voice is critical, especially now. And I do think that Lillian demonstrates that and Kimmy and Titus and even [Jacqueline] are having a whole new life since she broke up with her rich guy. She’s on her own and making something of her life, against great odds. Everyone in the show is sort of hopeful against great odds. And they’re all fighters. Season 3 of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” premieres on May 19 on Netflix.

My two cents, by the way, are coming from a straight white woman and should be taken in that context. My horse in this race is connected to the way women vs. men are portrayed in sex scenes. I’ll leave it to those who in the LGBTQ and Middle Eastern communities to make the incredibly important points about how this scene, between characters Salim (Omid Abtahi) and the Jinn (Mousa Kraish), affects them. All I can add with any authority is the angle that affects me: equal opportunity nudity. Showrunner Bryan Fuller spoke how Starz required equal opportunity nudity in shows like “Spartacus, and “Power. One wouldn’t think this
On the gay sex scene on ‘American Gods’ A sex scene between Salim (Omid Abtahi) and the Jinn (Mousa Kraish) has become the center of some great discussions recently. STARZ
feature naked women just as background decoration. Nudity is fine, in my book; the way it’s focused almost exclusively on pleasing straight men is not. Go ahead and put your favorite films or TV shows to this test. Whose nudity did you see? I’m not talking about butts here. Whose actual naughty bits were put on display? How often is it the woman completely naked but not the man? We’re told, as
should be a radical thing, but with the way sex has been portrayed throughout the history of television (and film and video games, etc.), it is. If you ever wanted evidence that most entertainment is focused on the straight-male gaze, just consider any series that shows nudity. “Game of Thrones? When it has male nudity, it’s usually to show that part of the body suffering some sort of harm. Then look again at how so many scenes

women, that our bodies are objects and the straight-male gaze is far more important than our own. Touch the sky in Pittsburgh The theme of summer 2017 in the City of Champions is high-flying fun.
Sightseeing from above
The best way to experience Pittsburgh is also from the sky, though not by flugtag. Head to the top of the city courtesy of its two funiculars. Board the Duquesne Incline for a spectacular view of the city’s three rivers and more as the car clicks upward from Pittsburgh’s Southside neighborhood. After peaking at 800 feet, step out and gaze at the stunning gateway to the city’s Golden Triangle (more commonly known as the heart of Downtown Pittsburgh).
ED CONDRAN
With apologies to Boston, Pittsburgh was the first City of Champions. Pennsylvania’s rising city has been reaching for sporting glory since the Civil War, and was the site of the first-ever football game in 1892. Sitting at the intersection of three rivers also means Pittsburgh has tons of water-based sports. In August, both enthusiasts and professionals will come out to play during the annual Three Rivers Regatta, which will be held from Aug. 4-6.
Red Bull Flugtag The festival’s main event will be the Red Bull Flugtag, a unique and unpredictable event that

would make the Wright brothers gasp. Every year, the brave competitors of Flugtag, which means “flying day” in German, have a chance to rewrite
aviation history as their staggering variety of aircraft take off from the 22-foot-high “flight deck.” Distance traveled, creativity of the craft and
showmanship make up the criteria for Flugtag teams, with each event attracting up to 300,000 spectators. The concepts are left of center at Flugtag, to say the least. In recent years, aviators have created flying tacos, pterodactyls and even Winnebagos with wings. Relatively conventional aircraft, such as Snoopy and his pals, have graced the skies as well. Showmanship counts. Participants often sport outrageous costumes, create their own skits and make their own soundtracks. Will the current world record of 258 feet set in 2013 in Long Beach, California, be eclipsed? Be in Pittsburgh on Aug. 5 to find out, when more than 40 teams will seek their fortunes in the sky — or meet a watery end.
Three Rivers Regatta There is more to the weekendlong water festival than these gravitydefying daredevils. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Three Rivers Regatta, with tons of powerboats providing plenty of high-speed action to spectators along Point State Park along with jet ski stunt shows, a music festival and a floating parade of lights after dusk. When you’re hungry, walk a short distance to Roberto Clemente Bridge, where an array of food trucks awaits with everything from Pittsburgh’s signature pierogies to pizza. There will also be a marketplace and, to continue with the theme of hitting the heights, you can take a ride on the Wheel of Lights, a giant gondola Ferris wheel.
If you would like to experience flight from another perspective, check out The National Aviary. The nation’s only indoor nonprofit zoo is home to more than 500 birds, 150 of which are threatened or endangered. Don’t miss the striking hyacinth macaw and the greenbacked trogon, and of course the playful African penguins. Make some new friends in the lorikeet exhibit by purchasing a cup of nectar. The tech-minded kids (and adults!) hang out at the Carnegie Science Center. The Sportsworks side of the facility offers nearly 30 interactive experiences in the categories of LifeWorks, Physics of Sports and Sports Challenge. Scale a 25-foot rock climbing wall, or don some serious climbing gear and hit the 21-foot zero gravity wall. If you love a thrill ride, hang on as you ride the simulated roller coasters.
The brave participants in the Red Bull Flugtag try to defy gravity with the most creativity possible. RED BULL CONTENT POOL

“I don’t want to trade [Isaiah] Thomas. I want to win now.” Danny Picard
Washington guard Markelle Fultz is considered by most to be the top available player in the 2017 NBA Draft. GETTY IMAGES
Celtics should shop the No. 1 pick Now we know. The Boston Celtics will have the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft. It’s a result of the trade with Brooklyn that keeps on giving. Last year, it was Jaylen Brown at No. 3 overall. This year, it will be the top pick in the draft. And in 2018, who knows, it could very well be the No. 1 overall pick once again, depending on what the Nets are able to do this offseason. Make no mistake about it, the tough decision that president of basketball operations Danny Ainge has to now make is a great problem to have. Don’t give me this idea that the Celtics were hoping to get screwed at Tuesday night’s lottery just because they didn’t want to feel obligated to draft

19-year-old point guard Markelle Fultz with the top pick. That’s foolish.
You want the No. 1 overall pick. If not to have first choice of the best available player, then to make sure your pick has as much trade value as possible. Which gets us back to the decision Ainge will have to make before the draft on June 22: Make the pick, or trade the pick? Now that we know it’s No. 1 overall, here’s what I want the Celtics to do: Shop the pick. I’m not saying they should panic and pull the trigger on the first good trade offer that comes their way. But they should definitely play the game while they can. And by that I mean the Celtics should absolutely let it be known that No. 1 overall is available for the right price. Pick up the phone,
listen to offers, make counteroffers, and send outrageous proposals to teams that inquire about players who are probably untouchable. Again, the Celtics don’t need to make any of those trades. But for all those committed to drafting Fultz, dangling that pick and gauging its value on the trade market should give everyone a pretty good sense as to just how good the kid is. Given the way the Celtics are already contending in the East, how could you just hang up the phone on conversations about proven NBA stars, if they became available in a potential trade? You’d be nuts to ignore that and automatically commit to Fultz right away. The Celtics obvi-
ously have the ability to sweeten any deal that would include this year’s No. 1 overall pick. They could add a roster player or two. They could even add next year’s Brooklyn pick. And given how bad the Nets will probably be

MARKELLE FULTZ’ PPG AVERAGE AS A FRESHMAN AT WASHINGTON next season, I don’t see how that wouldn’t be considered an extremely valuable trade chip. Right now, the Celtics have options. Keeping the pick and drafting Fultz would probably force the team to consider
trading Isaiah Thomas. Not because they’d want to, but because Thomas might not want to stick around with an organization that’s committing to the kids, especially one at his point guard position, rather than acquire NBA-ready talent to make a serious championship run right now. Thomas is a free agent after next season. I’d imagine he wouldn’t be too pleased if Ainge drafted Fultz. And as much as I’d like Thomas to get a big-money extension and stay in Boston, I can understand moving him if you draft Fultz. But I don’t want to trade Thomas. I want to win now. And if the right player was available in a trade that would help you do that, then I’m all in on moving the pick.

BALDING ’BRON BAL Can Markelle Fultz just become a member of the Celtics right now? Sox an average bunch so far in 2017 The Red Sox have been unable to put together a significant win streak so far. MATT BURKE
We’re almost 40 games into the 2017 MLB season and the Red Sox are decidedly average. The overwhelming favorite in the AL East to start the year, the Sox are looking up at the Yankees - of all teams - and the Orioles in the division standings. The lowly Rays aren’t all that far behind them. There’s obviously still an enormous amount of baseball left to be played, but if the Sox do finish stuck in the middle – it will be a much different script than we’ve seen in the past five years. Since 2012, the Sox have either finished dead last or first in the division. The Sox went 13-11 in the month of April this year and are 7-7 so

Oakland is arguably the worst team in the American League right now as it owns a record of 17-22 and has a run differential of minus-41. Hector Velazquez, a 28-year-old righty, got the call to come up from Pawtucket to start Thursday’s series opener against the A’s. Chris Sale (4-2, 2.15 ERA) will look to continue his torrid pace on Friday at Bobby Valentine’s favorite venue – the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
