MNUCHIN HAS DOUBTS IN ALTERNATE SCORING

AMTRAK ENGINEER ROGER AILES, FORMER FOX SURRENDERS TO CHARGES NEWS CHIEF, DIES AT 77

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told lawmakers that he has some doubts that what are known as alternate scoring models will give enough credit to the potential for economic growth when assessing the impact of the Trump administration’s tax plan. In late April, the administration put out a one-page overview of its tax reform plans, which would cut taxes for businesses to 15 percent, as well as cutting taxes and sim-

plifying income tax brackets for individuals. Critics questioned how the tax cuts would be offset without driving up the federal deficit. “What I have said repeatedly is that any plan we put forward we believe should be paid for with economic growth,” Mnuchin told the Senate Banking Committee. REUTERS

The engineer in a deadly 2015 Amtrak train crash in Philadelphia surrendered to authorities on Thursday after being charged with involuntary manslaughter last week, the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office said. The state charges came even though local prosecutors had cleared the engineer of criminal wrongdoing last week. In addition to eight counts of involuntary manslaughter, former

Amtrak engineer Brandon Bostian was charged with one count of causing or risking a catastrophe and numerous counts of reckless endangerment. Bostian appeared in handcuffs and was led into a police office on Thursday, according to local media outlets. He declined to comment to reporters. A spokesman for Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro said an arraignment was set for later on Thursday. REUTERS

MAYHEM IN TIMES SQUARE

The man who drove a car for three blocks on the sidewalk in Times Square has been identified as Richard Rojas, Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a news conference on Thursday. Witnesses said the motorist was driving against traffic before his burgundy Honda sedan mounted the sidewalk and struck pedestrians. The car hit a pole and came to rest at 45th Street and Broadway before police took the driver away. An 18-year-old tourist from Michigan, Alyssa Elsman, died during the incident and 22 others were hospitalized, including Elsman’s 13-year-old sister. For more, see page 10 METRO, GETTY IMAGES

FACEBOOK WINS DISMISSAL OF LAWSUITS

A federal judge dismissed two lawsuits seeking to hold Facebook Inc liable for supporting terrorist groups by letting them use its social media platform to further their goals, including violence against Jews. U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis in Brooklyn dismissed a $3 billion damages lawsuit by relatives of American victims of Hamas attacks, saying the federal Communications Decency Act

regulating internet content immunizes Facebook from liability. That law “prevents courts from entertaining civil actions that seek to impose liability on defendants like Facebook for allowing third parties to post offensive or harmful content or failing to remove such content once posted,” Garaufis wrote. Garaufis also dismissed a lawsuit by roughly 20,000 Israeli citizens who feared harm from future violence. REUTERS

Roger Ailes, founder and former chief executive of Fox News, the cable news channel popular with conservatives that helped reshape the U.S. political landscape, has died at age 77. Ailes’ widow, Elizabeth Ailes, announced his death in a statement posted on the Fox News website on Thursday. He resigned from Fox News last July following allegations of sexual harassment, marking an

abrupt end to his 20-year reign at the mostwatched cable channel in the United States. Fox News, which Ailes started in 1996 with the backing of media mogul Rupert Murdoch, raised the temperature of on-air debate on U.S. television, generally taking a hardline conservative view. REUTERS

After signing LeGarrette Blount to a one-year deal, the Eagles’ plan to win the NFC East this year has become plain to see. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

Eagles fans, just months ago, were hunkering down for the long haul. The team had missed the playoffs for the second straight year in 2016, and they couldn’t avoid the glaring holes on the roster at key positions like wide receiver, running back and cornerback. Eagles VP of Football Operations Howie Roseman told fans the team would not be signing “Band-Aids” to a young roster and that the team aimed to build — slowly — a Super Bowl contender. That’s what the Eagles said. But that’s not what they did. In free agency, the Birds signed veteran wide receivers Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith to short-term contracts. They signed veteran passrusher Chris Long and swapped draft picks for veteran defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan. They drafted two project wide receivers to develop over time with quarterback Carson Wentz and a handful of durable midround prospects. And this week they continued the trend, signing 30-year-old running back LeGarrette Blount. So are they trying to win now? “For us, a Band-Aid is a guy who’s in the twilight of his career and doesn’t have a lot of time left and probably not someone that you would want to extend going forward,” Roseman said in March after the Jeffery deal was signed. “But in terms of what we got here, you

know, we got guys who are in their 20s, mid-tolate 20s, which is always stuff that we talked about, and guys that we have an opportunity if they do a good job to keep here for the future. I think it’s consistent with what we’ve been talking about. We’re excited that we were able to get those particular guys.” The conversation is slowly shifting as the Eagles are signing weapon after weapon for soonto-be sophomore Wentz, not to whether or not they will try to win — but to whether they actually can. “I think they are trying to win now, for sure,” Blount said Thursday, declining to comment on which teams he spurned to decide on Philadelphia. “I had interest from other teams but I chose Philly cause I thought it was the best fit for me. I like the guys here. I like the way they do things around here. I like the way they play ball, so I felt it was the perfect fit.” Blount knows about winning, having won two of the last three Super Bowls as a member of the Patriots. And his claims that the Eagles are “building something special” and that “Cason is one of those guys you want to build a team around” have to make Eagles fans burst with anticipation. With Washington taking a step back after losing a few key free agents, the NFC East looks to be a three-team race between Philly, New York and Dallas, last year’s division champ. The Eagles have overhauled both their offense and their secondary (relatively speaking), investing in true talent and giving players heavily incentive-based contracts. Year 2 under Wentz and head coach Doug Pederson may pan out to be more than just rebuild year two — it could be the first of many winning seasons.

An “arresting” performance: Philly sheriff turns actor Being a typical South Philly guy actually helped Dave Dougherty get roles. HAYDEN MITMAN @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

For the past 30 years, Dave Dougherty of Roxborough has served as an officer of the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office. But, the longtime law enforcement professional – he’s assigned to handle violent crimes against juveniles – also prides himself on a successful second career on stage and screen. Dougherty is an actor, and he is in a new show, “My Big Gay Italian Wedding,” that will open on June 30 in Atlantic City. In a recent interview, Dougherty said that his career as a thespian began as something of a lark 15 years ago, when he tried out for a play after seeing an ad in an issue of the nolonger-published Philadelphia City Paper. “I went in and, lo and behold, they hired me,” he said of his first audition, which was for an off-Broadway play based on the TV show “The Sopranos.” “Before then, I had only one acting class to my resume.” Since that audition, Dougherty said, he’s been working steadily with roles in plays and short films. A job that he thought would be a fun way to make a little extra income has become a passion that he hopes to embrace full time after he retires from his job in law enforcement. “I’ve been lucky enough to do a lot of stuff. … I found out that I have some skill in this,” he said. “I was like, ‘Hey, I guess I’m pretty good at this.’” But he admitted that having a full-time career in law enforcement has impacted his budding acting career. To make it to auditions throughout the region, Dougherty has been using vacation time as much as he can. “The trick is, you’ve got to do this sort of bal-

ancing things,” he said. “I use vacation time when I can. But I’ve had to turn down jobs because I couldn’t make it.” Still, Dougherty said the struggles of a working actor pale in comparison to the joy he gets from performing in front of a live audience. Also, he said, as a typical South Philly guy – he was born there and has lived in North and Northeast Philly neighborhoods throughout his life – Dougherty has found that he has a knack for playing the typical cop, union construction worker and fireman-types. In fact, Dougherty said he recently played an FBI agent in a small film. But with this new play, he’s also enjoying the challenge of playing something a little different. “That’s kind of the joy of this. It’s challenging, but you want to see if you can do it,” said Dougherty. In the upcoming play, which is part of a trilogy

of performances that also includes “My Big Gay Italian Funeral” and “My Big Gay Italian Midlife Crisis,” Dougherty plays the father of one of the men getting married. And, in the past, in a short film, Dougherty – a straight single father of a 23-year-old son – portrayed a gay man. It was a role, he said, that his friends didn’t believe he would do, given his toughguy persona. “Some of that stuff can seem kind of diametrically opposed to my day job,” said Dougherty. “But, it’s like any role. You take it, and you say ‘Can I do it?’ … I look forward to that, and in the future, as I do plays more and more, to see if I can become something else.” Dougherty’s new show, “My Big Gay Italian Wedding” opens on Friday, June 30, at the Superstar Theater in Atlantic City. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or by visiting Dougherty’s website at Davedoc.org.

safer communities. Liza Ryan, director of organizing with Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, describes a chilling effect communities experience when immigrants are too afraid to report crimes due to fears of deportation. Already some cities are seeing the effect — Houston has seen a 40 percent drop in the number of reported rapes during Trump’s first few months in office, the Houston Chronicle reported. L.A. has seen similar dips in crime reporting among Latinos. One of the reasons, Ryan said, is that the federal government is increasingly trying to recruit local law enforcement to act as immigration officers, asking people about their status and holding them for ICE agents when it is in question.

were convicted criminals, arrests of noncriminal residents whose only crime was being undocumented have jumped 157 percent, from 4,600 between January and April of last year to 10,800 arrests during the same period this year. Miguel Andrade of Juntos, a Philadelphiabased organization that advocates for the rights of immigrants and the Latin community, said he is already seeing emboldened enforcement play out in his city. “We are seeing that people are regaining a level of fear because ICE is starting to be more aggressive. We are seeing raids happening and the use of a lot more rogue tactics during arrests,” he said. Since Trump took office, the federal government has arrested an average of 400 people per day on civil immigration charges. “The executive or-

Times Square crash victim identified A young woman was killed and 22 people were injured after a car barreled through pedestrians on the sidewalk in Times Square. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse

A young woman died and 22 people were injured, four critically, after a speeding Honda Accord plowed through a pedestrianfilled sidewalk in Times Square just before noon on Thursday. Alyssa Elsman, the 18-year-old woman who died at the scene, was a tourist from Michigan, ABC7 reported. She graduated from Portage Central High School last year, the Detroit Free Press reported. Her

prehended first by outraged citizens and then by NYPD officers. He allegedly punched a police officer, ABC reported. Officials believe Rojas was high on synthetic marijuana, commonly known

as K2. He tested negative for alcohol, the Associated Press reported. “The driver tried to run from the scene, and the bouncer from Planet Hollywood hit him, so we jumped on top of him and

ripped his shirt, wanted to make sure he had no gun or knife on him,” a tour ticket agent told CBS2. Mayor Bill de Blasio said Rojas is a veteran of the U.S. Navy with a history of two previous drunkdriving arrests and a May arrest for menacing. “Based on the info we have at this moment, there is no indication that this was an act of terrorism,” De Blasio said at a news conference in Times Square after the crash. Within minutes of the crash, witnesses reported on social media that the car had driven onto the sidewalk and struck random passersby before crashing against a pole and coming to a rest at 45th Street and Broadway. The area was shut down by the NYPD, and nearby offices instructed tenants to “shelter in place.” Reuters and Kimberly M. Aquilina contributed to this report.

Trump denies asking Comey to drop probe, colluding with Russia In Twitter posts, Trump decried the naming of Robert Mueller, a respected former FBI director, as a special counsel. President Donald Trump, striking a defiant tone on Thursday after days of political tumult, denied colluding with Russia during his 2016 campaign or asking former FBI Director James Comey to drop a probe into his former national security adviser. “No. No. Next question, Trump told a news conference when asked if he “in any way, shape or form ever urged Comey, whom he fired on May 9, to close down the investigation into Michael Flynn. Comey’s firing was

one in a series of developments that culminated on Wednesday in the Justice Department’s appointment of a special counsel to probe ties between Russia and Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. They included media reports that Trump discussed sensitive intelligence with Russia’s foreign minister. In a pair of morning tweets and at a later news conference, Trump described calls for his impeachment as “ridiculous and said he had done nothing to warrant criminal charges. “The entire thing has been a witch hunt and there is no collusion between certainly myself and my campaign – but I can always speak for myself – and the Russians. conference with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos. Asked if he thought he did anything to warrant criminal charges or impeachment, the president replied: “I think it’s totally ridiculous. Trump categorically denied he asked Comey to drop his probe of Flynn, whom he fired on Feb. 14 for misleading Vice President Mike Pence about the extent of his conversations last year with Russia’s ambassador. According to media reports, Comey wrote a memo detailing Trump’s comments to him in February saying: “I hope you can let this go, referring to the Flynn probe. “With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign and Obama administration,

there was never a special counsel appointed! Trump wrote on Thursday morning. He did not offer any evidence of such acts in his reference to former President Barack Obama and former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. “This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history! added Trump. Reuters reported on Thursday that Flynn and other Trump advisers

were in contact with Russian officials and others with Kremlin ties in at least 18 calls and emails during the last seven months of the presidential race. Trump also said he was selecting a new FBI director to replace Comey, and that former senator and one-time Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Lieberman was among the top candidates. Trump’s latest com-

ments stood in contrast to his measured statement on Wednesday night after the announcement of Mueller’s appointment, when he said “a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity. Democrats rejected Trump’s characterization. “This is a truth hunt, said Democratic Sen. Is Vice President Pence preparing to run for president on his own in 2020? Mike Pence filed paperwork with the FEC in an unprecedented move by a sitting vice president.

The second most powerful person in the United States can’t disappear as magically as Waldo, but Vice President Mike Pence has been conspicuously missing from the public eye in the last few days. interests and make donations to down-ticket candidates. The PAC, into which Pence can incorporate funds raised in the past, will also cover the costs of Pence’s travels on Air

Force Two to campaign for Republican candidates across the nation. Previously, officials have used party or campaign funds to cover travel costs; this is the first time a sitting VP has formed a

separate political apparatus, NBC reported. The birth of the political arm will “provide resources for the vice president to actually support candidates who are supportive of the president’s agenda,” a source told NBC. There is no doubt that Pence has benefitted from his ties to Trump, which has landed him the vice presidential gig, but could those same ties sink his aspirations? “Don’t read into 2020 as anything other than his running for reelection as vice president in 2020 and supporting other candidates,” a source told NBC. Still, the timing of the PAC formation has raised some eyebrows. Leadership PACs can accept donations from individuals up to $5,000. Nick Ayers and Marty Obst, two of Pence’s aides, will lead the organization.

Danny McBride wants to scare you now Katherine Waterston and Danny McBride play two of the potential monster-chow in “Alien: Covenant, in theaters today. MARK ROGERS

The onetime Kenny Powers tries out horror, first with “Alien: Covenant, next with “Halloween. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Danny McBride is not Kenny Powers. In real life, he’s a nice guy, not the egomaniacal monster of a former baseballer from “Eastbound & Down. (He’s also not “Danny McBride, the assholish version of himself he played in “This is the End.) He’s not even strictly a funnyman anymore. In Ridley Scott’s “Alien: Covenant, he plays the nonwisecracking pilot of a massive ship transporting thousands sleeping colonists to a new home far away. En route, the crew investigates another planet, only to suddenly

find themselves battling space monsters, and not just the classic Xenomorph from the original “Alien. But that’s not all: McBride is flexing his horror muscles some more. He’s recently signed up to co-write the reboot of “Halloween with his longtime friend and cohort David Gordon Green (“Pineapple Express). We talked to the actor-filmmaker, 40, about going from laughs to scares.

Honestly, that’s what I was expecting when I first heard from Ridley. I would gladly participate in anything he wanted me to. When I got the script it was exciting to see he was going to rely on me for something different than what I’d done before. And you’re a nice guy in this movie. I know, it’s great! [Laughs]

It’s pretty cool that you’re segueing from comedy into horror now. Yeah! Turns out killing people is as much fun as making people laugh. [Laughs]

Are people surprised to learn you’re not an egomaniacal asshole like Kenny Powers? All the time. I’d hate it to be the opposite, where it’s like, “He seems like such a nice guy. Turns out he’s a dick. [Laughs]

Were you surprised with “Alien that you weren’t going to play a comic relief who cracks jokes then gets an alien mouth through the head?

It must have helped doing this before you wound up with the gig co-writing “Halloween.â€? It’s such a dierent kind of ďŹ lm for you and David

Gordon Green. It really is. I met David my freshman year of college; he was my next door neighbor, one year ahead of me at North Carolina School of the Arts. When I saw his films, I thought he was definitely doing something different than everyone else at school. He had a unique voice. It’s high praise, but I really think his career path is similar to Robert Altman. Robert Altman was not afraid to jump from one genre to the next. He could do something like “Nashville, then make something like “Popeye. That’s what David likes to do. He just likes making movies, and he doesn’t want to have that same experience every time he shows up on set. Still, is it scary to be do-

GETTY

ing horror? No, it’s just as exciting as doing a comedy — to be looking at masks and blood effects and figuring out intricate ways to kill people. [Laughs] It’s just a different set of issues to get your head around. The thing that’s kind of crazy about creating a horror film is you rely on the same thing that you do with comedy. Ultimately it’s about engineering tension and pace and knowing when to let the audience off the hook, so you get the best reaction out of them. It’s been fun to take some of those same principles you would with comedy and figuring out how to engineer scares instead.

“Alien: Covenant” Director: Ridley Scott Stars: Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston Rating: R What you want from Ridley Scott’s “Alien: Covenant” is perhaps not what Ridley Scott wants to give you. You want kills — slimy, drooling beasties with razor-sharp teeth turning stupid, easy-to-eat humans into alien chow. Scott will give

WKND

you plenty of that. But while you’re here, might you want to hear all his thoughts on God? With “Covenant,” he’s like the grandpa who tells you he’ll give you ice cream — but only if you listen to his lengthy story about when he was young. Thing is, they’re not uninteresting thoughts. Set 10 years after Scott’s 99 percent Xenomorph-free “Prometheus,” “Covenant” finds a new batch of doomed travelers, on a ship setting off for another, hopefully better, world. Instead,

they wind up on another planet — possibly a better one, were it not soon crawling with chestand back-bursting nasties. It’s also crawling with David, the fastidious, Wagnerloving, possibly evil android played by Michael Fassbender in “Prometheus.” Fassbender gets more screentime than the hungry monsters, especially since he’s also playing Walter, another, newer, less self-aware bot. You might not have come to listen to David’s poshlyaccented splutterings — plus

some hot Fassbender-onFassbender action —but what “Covenant” gives us might, in a way, be scarier than a simple slasher pic. (We’re dancing around spoilers. All we’ll say is this will make for a great gradschool paper on “post-human cinema.”) It’s easy to be cynical about “Alien: Covenant,” which really only exists because everything old must now become new again. But what Scott is doing with the “Alien” franchise may be the most original and ec-

centric form of cinematic world building out there. Reverseengineering one of his greatest triumphs, the 1979 original, into a series of philosophical blockbusters is, frankly, pretty badass. You can picture him telling execs there will be blood, then smirking to himself, knowing he was also going to sneak in lots of stuff he read in old Carl Sagan books. There is indeed blood — and overqualified actors (like Katherine Waterston and Carmen Ejogo and Billy

15

Crudup) bringing real humanity to under-written characters. And some disappointing, overly-digital aliens. And then there’s the fact that Scott has never been great with directing action. (The first “Alien” is slow and shows almost nothing. Ditto “Blade Runner.” They’re also his best films.) It’s a mixed bag that still works better than it should, given its absurdly huge ambitions. And given the soullessness of most movie world building these days, we’ll take it. MATT PRIGGE

But Michael Fassbender’s android David is the secret real star. MARK ROGERS

5Things to know before ‘Twin Peaks’ airs

The show finally returns after 26 years. If you need a refresher, we’ve got your back.

S. Truman, played by Michael Ontkean, who retired a number of years back and couldn’t be coaxed back to the show. Lara Flynn Boyle is not on the cast sheet, meaning we’ll never find out what happened to Donna Hayward. The same goes for Piper Laurie (Catherine Martell), Ian Buchanan (dandy Dick Tremayne), even Michael J. Anderson (aka the backwards talking dwarf).

MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

It is happening again — finally. Twenty-six years ago, David Lynch and Mark Frost’s “Twin Peaks was canceled. Since then, its loyal fans have wondered what would have happened next, assuming they’d never find out. And because we definitely deserve nice things right now, we’re about to learn that after all. But if you haven’t been bingeing, here’s a quick refresher on what to expect:

Kyle MacLachlan’s Agent Dale Cooper (on the right), Kimmy Robertson’s Lucy and Harry Goaz’s Deputy Andy (above) all return for the new series of “Twin Peaks, which premieres on May 21 on Showtime at 9 p.m. ALL PHOTOS SUZANNE TENNER

4. You should watch the prequel It was hated upon release, but we think 1992’s “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me is something like a masterpiece. But if our recommendation isn’t enough to get you to watch it (and it streams on Hulu), then there’s this: Lynch himself has said knowledge of the prequel movie is important to following the show.

the most decent fed in the universe, who loved a good slice of cherry pie as much as he loved solving mysteries — was possessed by Bob, the malevolent spirit that started this whole mess. 2. In memoriam Twenty-six years is a long time, and in the interim numerous beloved “Twin Peaks actors have passed on. Michael Parks (Jean Renault) died last week. Jack Nance (Pete Martell, and a Lynch regular) passed in 1996. Don S. Davis, aka crusty but loving Major Briggs, left us in 2008. And then there’s Frank Silva, otherwise known as demonic Bob, who died in 1996. Some actors were

able to film their roles before passing recently. Those include Miguel Ferrer (prickly forensics specialist Alan Rosenfield), Warren Frost (Dr. Will Hayward) and Catherine E. Coulson, who died in 2015 but did film her scenes as the Log Lady. 3. MIA Not everyone is back. The biggest missing person is Sheriff Harry

5. How weird will it be? Lynch hasn’t made a movie in 11 years. Even then, it was “Inland Empire, a three-hour avant-garde headscratcher that’s pure genius but not, shall we say, very audiencefriendly. He might be a bit rusty. Or maybe he isn’t! Lynch did collaborate on every episode with co-creator Mark Frost, who was always there to rein him in. We may indeed get the show we used to love. (SBOJUF $06/5&35014 JOTUBMMFE

Clear your weekend and binge these under the radar shows Here are five series you should be watching.

“CRAZYHEAD” (NETFLIX)

Oh, just fightin’ demons and making lifelong friends over here.

RACHAEL VAUGHAN CLEMMONS @MetroNewYork

NETFLIX

rachael.clemmons@metro.us

Here’s another British show to satisfy your inner Anglophile. From the creator of “Misfits,” “Crazyhead” brings women and empowerment to the forefront. Amy (Cara Theobold) discovers she’s a seer, gifted with the ability to see demons hiding in plain sight. She reluctantly teams up with Raquel (Susan Wokoma), a hunter who revels in showing said demons who’s boss. Of course, things go terribly wrong. Best friends are accidentally possessed. Raquel uncovers her past — one that is unpleasant to confront. But at the end of the day, these girls kick ass, and watching their friendship blossom is a thing of beauty. It’s a modern day “Buffy” with British sensibilities.

There’s a lot of great television out there and new series are constantly popping up (especially from Britain). If you’re addicted to TV like the rest of us, there are always more mustsee shows for you to add to your never-ending watch list. Luckily, because there are so many shows, there’s something for everyone — from the feel goods to the critically adored. There is so much to explore outside of the mainstream, we’re bringing you a guide to five under the radar shows for your next binge fest. These overlooked shows may not be new, exactly, but they pack an enjoyable punch.

“LOVESICK” (NETFLIX)

The gang’s all here on “Lovesick.” NETFLIX

Sometimes, you don’t need a fine wine, because the perfectly reasonable option at Trader Joe’s will do. That’s kind of what “Lovesick” is like. Formerly known as “Scrotal Recall,” this series follows Dylan (Johnny Flynn), a die-hard romantic, as he goes through a Rolodex of past lovers to tell them about his uh, STD situation. Zigzagging between past and present, it delivers the basics of medium-brow television. There are love triangles, attractive best friends, broken engagements and impossibly chic condos! And while Dylan sometimes tips into annoying, his friends

“Fleabag” manages to be both like nothing you’ve ever seen and very familiar. In the six-episode series, Phoebe Waller-Bridge stars as the titular Fleabag, a woman as antiheroic as she is hilarious. The series picks up after the death of Fleabag’s best friend, and explores the often fragile nature of our relationships: platonic, familial and romantic. And while the show seesaws majestically from hilarious to depressing, the greatest pleasure of all is when Fleabag consults conspiratorially with her audience, breaking the fourth wall — and turning the unlikeable female character trope on its head.

You could easily mistake “Chewing Gum” as the same old same old. The series follows Tracey — played gloriously by Michaela Coel who also writes and directs — a 20-something-year-old virgin stifled by her family’s intense religious trappings. But Tracey’s nonstop self assurance leads her to a variety of shenanigans, including a misguided, Beyonce-inspired seduction. Through it all, Tracey never gives up. And Coel uses the space to slyly eviscerate male entitlement and white privilege while maintaining a positive outlook on sex and sexual liberation. “MAN SEEKING WOMAN” (FXX, HULU)

Jay Baruchel gets pensive as Josh in the critically adored “Man Seeking Woman.” FX

Michaela Coel shines bright as Tracey in “Chewing Gum.” NETFLIX

If for some reason, you’ve always wondered what magical realism looks like from a millennial perspective, “Man Seeking Woman” is for you. For three seasons, the FXX series, followed Josh (Jay Baruchel) on his very bumpy, fantastical quest for love, seasoned with appearances from trolls, sex aliens and in one episode, Santa Claus himself. The show changed a lot throughout its three year span, allowing its characters to evolve and grow with it. But it always managed to be a mash up of your favorite romantic comedies with a large helping of some near “Pan’s Labyrinth” style terror.

Philadelphia’s suburbs are horse country, and there’s no better time to visit than spring and summer, when a host of events put the ponies front and center.

Devon Horse Show and Country Fair Like stepping back in time, a visit to the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair (May 25-June 4) is a genuine, old-fashioned delight. Established in 1896, Devon — the largest outdoor horse show in the country — has played host to genera-

There are competitions for everything from best carriage to best hat. There’s even a dog show. While the horses may be the main attraction, don’t pass on the fairgrounds, where vendors

Josh Jackson, from a pure talent perspective, is a probably the best player likely to still be available when the Sixers pick third on June 22.

Is the Kansas forward the third best player available for the Sixers in June’s NBA Draft? JEFF MCMENAMIN @Jeff_McMenamin sports@metro.us

For the Sixers, they don’t need to overthink their No. 3 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. The only pick for the team to make is Kansas Jayhawks freshman phenom Josh Jackson. Jackson is the athletic swingman the Sixers have been without since the departure of Andre Iguodala in the Andrew Bynum trade back in 2012. But unlike Iguodala, Jackson will serve as one of the final pieces to the Sixers’ roster puzzle and not relied upon as the featured star. Wa s h i n t o n ’ s Markelle Fultz should go to Boston at No. 1 and all signs point to the Lakers picking controversial talent Lonzo Ball (along with the vocal baggage of his dad, LaVar) at No. 2. This leaves the 6-foot-8 Jackson on the board at No. 3 for Philadelphia and a can’t-miss pick for gen-

eral manager Bryan Colangelo. Will the Sixers still need a starting point guard of the future? Absolutely. But reaching for point guards such as De’Aaron Fox and Dennis Smith Jr. in the upcoming draft is not the answer. A year of Ben Simmons and Jerryd Bayless splitting time at the position on a team

For more on the NBA draft, check out extensive coverage at metro.us with low expectations is perfectly fine. After all, the Sixers will finally receive the Lakers’ first round pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, as well as their own pick, due to former general manager Sam Hinkie’s foresight. There will be more point guard options in next year’s draft and signing All-Star point guard and local product Kyle Lowry to a max contract this summer is still not out of the ques-

tion. Jackson is seen as the best wing defender in the draft, averaging 1.7 steals and 1.1 blocks per game on the defensive side of the ball last season. His offensive game needs polishing, but he still averaged 16.3 points, and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 38 percent from the outside. He’s drawn comparisons to both Iguodala and MVP candidate Kawhi Leonard due to his two-way ability on the wing. The defensive potential for the Sixers with Jackson and a healthy Simmons added to the Sixers’ starting lineup could make the team among the best in the league in that department. Like drafting Simmons last year, the pick should be a no-brainer for Colangelo. Drafting Jackson will bring the Sixers that much closer to contending for a championship down the road. Barring a shake up with the first two picks of the draft (or with the Sixers’ own pick for that matter), look for Jackson to take the stage for the red, white and blue on draft night.Â

Only the Mets have a worse pitching staff than the Phillies do this season The return of Aaron Nola comes at the right time as the Phillies pitching staff continues its downward spiral. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

The only thing that can make Phillies fans feel better about their team having the second worst pitching staff in baseball is that the Mets have the worst. But that logic gets shot to hell when looking at the standings, as the Phils are again bringing up the rear in the NL East. Through 37 games, the Phillies have the second worst ERA in the majors at 4.82 (the Mets have an ERA of 5.13). They also have one of the three worst batting averages against — which comes

as no surprise to anyone watching the squad try to tightrope walk inning after inning with runners on base. Despite an influx of a few key pitching prospects like Zach Eflin (who was battered in a loss in Texas this past week) and Nick Pivetta (who has been average in the bullpen), the Phils’ pitching woes have only gotten worse. So for a team that has continued to impress with above average offense, their pitching has put some impressive hitting performances from Aaron Altherr, Cesar Hernandez and others to waste. Newly extended manager Pete Mackanin is feeling frustrated. “I sound like a broken record,” Mackanin said Wednesday in a loss to the Rangers (that saw Philly allow 17 hits). “The command isn’t there. The Phillies will continue to grind this weekend, as they finish up a long road trip with a trio of games against cross-

state rivals the Pirates before playing seven games at home next week. Facing struggles of their own, the Pirates could be a good stop for the Phillies as they look to stop the bleeding and return to winning ways before heading back to Citizens Bank Park to host the Rockies and Reds. Jeremy Hellickson is just who they’ll want on the mound for Game 1 of the Pittsburgh series, at 7:05 on CSN. He’ll be opposed by Trevor Williams. Vincent Velasquez will take the mound opposite Ivan Nova in the second game Saturday before the welcome return of Aaron Nola off the disabled list to start Sunday’s matinee. Nola was stellar in a rehab start last week after missing a month of action, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out seven in 6 1/3 innings.

metro.us/horoscopes Aries A change of scenery will do you good. Taking a day trip or visiting someone with similar interests will be enlightening and will give you a new lease on life.

Libra Truth is essential when dealing with a child, loved one or friend. Delays and confusion will tamper with your plans. Leave plenty of time to reach your destination.

Taurus Do things differently in order to attract an audience. Your ability to resolve issues and achieve goals will raise awareness and enhance your reputation.

Scorpio Home is where the heart is. Make a space that will encourage you to work on something that makes you feel good about yourself and the direction you are heading.

Gemini If you exaggerate or give someone the wrong impression about what you are offering, you will end up in an emotional situation that will be difficult to reverse.

Sagittarius If someone uses emotional tactics to grab your attention, respond with a peaceful alternative solution that will help you avoid a senseless argument.

Cancer Share something you enjoy doing with someone you love. Collaborating to come up with a plan that leads to a better lifestyle is encouraged.

Capricorn Suggest a good idea that will help thwart a plan that makes no sense to you. A congenial approach to a deal that doesn’t favor you will help you balance the outcome.

Leo Stubbornness will set you back. Try to work with your peers to come up with the best solutions. Finishing projects will be the cornerstone to getting ahead.

Aquarius Put more effort into making personal improvements and financial gains and living a healthy lifestyle. Home improvements will make your life less stressful.

Virgo Refuse to get worked up over what someone else says. Walk away from a dispute and seize any opportunity you get to expand your knowledge and skills.

Pisces An honest look at the past will help you develop a plan that will improve your future. Don’t shy away from doing things differently. Accept your uniqueness. EUGENIA LAST
