DUBKE EXIT SEEN AS PUERTO RICO WILL MAKE WOODS ‘ASLEEP AT THE FIRST SHOT IN SHAKE-UP PENSION BOND PAYMENT WHEEL’ OF STOPPED CAR

1

President Donald Trump’s communications director is leaving the job, the White House said, as the president considers wider staff changes to try to contain political damage from probes into Russia and his presidential campaign. Mike Dubke confirmed reports he had resigned, saying in a statement, “It has been my great honor to serve President Trump and this administration.” Dubke, who

had been in the job just three months, gave no reason for leaving. Trump has been expected to shake up staff to tackle the firestorm over investigations into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and communication between Russia and Trump’s campaign and transition teams. Puerto Rico’s government said it will make a $13.9 million payment on June 1 to bondholders of the Employees Retirement System (ERS), the island’s largest pension. The agreement, announced at a hearing in federal court in Manhattan, settled a lawsuit filed on Friday as part of ERS’ ongoing bankruptcy. It did not resolve a similar dispute over about $16 million owed on June

1 to bondholders of Puerto Rico’s sales tax authority, COFINA. The disputes are tied to Puerto Rico’s massive economic crisis, which is marked by $70 billion in bond debt and another $49 billion in pension obligations. Those debts have pushed the U.S. territory and some of its public entities, including COFINA and ERS, into the largest combined municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. REUTERS

Former world No. 1 golfer Tiger Woods was asleep at the wheel of a stationary Mercedes-Benz vehicle on a Florida road and did not know where he was, according to a police report released on Tuesday, a day after his arrest on a charge of driving under the influence. Woods had “extremely slow and slurred speech” after being awoken by a Jupiter police officer, who found the car the golfer was

driving stopped in the right lane of the roadway and still running, the report said. Woods was heading south, away from his Jupiter Island home, before his arrest at about 3 a.m. on Monday, according to the report. It said Woods was cooperative but had a hard time walking and keeping his eyes open. REUTERS

TEST OF DEFENSE AGAINST SIMULATED ICBM ATTACK

5

The U.S. military on Tuesday cheered a successful first-ever missile defense test involving a simulated attack by an intercontinental ballistic missile, in a major milestone for a program meant to defend against a mounting North Korean threat. The U.S. military fired an ICBM-type missile from the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands toward the waters just south of Alaska. It then fired a missile to intercept it

from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Experts compare the job to hitting a bullet with another bullet and note the complexity is magnified by the enormous distances involved. The Missile Defense Agency said it was the first live-fire test against a simulated ICBM for the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD), managed by Boeing Co., and hailed it as an “incredible accomplishment.” REUTERS

Methodist Hospital health expo brings free health care to S. Philly WRITTEN BY

Amy Smith Saturday, June 3 marks Methodist Hospital – Jefferson Health’s 29th Annual Health Expo, a much-anticipated event designed to increase access to health care in South Philadelphia and beyond. “We are a community hospital, and that’s our mission—to serve the community; they’re our neighbors, after all,” says Diane Pirollo, Methodist Hospital Foundation Development Officer. “Every year, hundreds of people receive all kinds of free health

screenings, including cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure and more.” The Annual Health Expo is an exciting, outdoor event for the whole family. The community is invited to pop by, fill their plates, and have some fun while tending to their health. This year’s event will feature face painting, balloon artists, and beloved kids’ characters like Captain America and Belle from Beauty and the Beast. A wide array of children’s health services will be available, from dental care to general pediatrics. Adults and geriatrics will be in good

company, as well. Methodist Hospital’s Annual Health Expo also offers free health screenings for glucose and cholesterol, stroke and osteoporosis. What’s more, the hospital has teamed up with the Linda Creed Foundation to deliver free mammograms for uninsured and underinsured women. “Anybody can show up; we don’t charge or ask for insurance,” says Pirollo. “It’s something we provide because we feel it’s our responsibility to take care of our neighbors.” Guests can expect more than complimentary screenings and fun—the event also boasts free

health information and consultations across a wide array of specialties. Nutrition counseling and colorectal cancer education are both on the itinerary. There will also be primary care physicians, obstetricians and gynecologists available to meet with guests. “We make it easy for people to connect with physicians and services that they may not know are in the community,” adds Pirollo. “We get calls every year from people wanting to know when the Annual Health Expo is because many people depend on it for their annual physicals. The event really improves access

to health care, and it’s just a lot of fun.” This year’s event will also celebrate Methodist Hospital’s 125th anniversary! For over a century, Methodist has been a mainstay in the community, delivering high-quality, compassionate health care. The 2017 Annual Health Expo will take place the

first Saturday of June from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Broad Street entrance of the hospital. Methodist Hospital’s team is gearing up for a funfilled day where all community members are welcome!

Protestors: Something stinks about cops’ illegal ‘underwear searches’ Reports of illegal “underwear searches” by Philly cops led to a protest by Black Lives Matters activists Tuesday. HAYDEN MITMAN @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

Armed with a bullhorn and a pair of underwear, Asa Khalif, a Philly organizer with the Black Lives Matter movement, marched outside of Philadelphia police headquarters on Tuesday to protest reports of the illegal practice of officers searching into the underwear of those targeted in stop-andfrisk searches. It’s a practice that was recently highlighted by the Daily News in a report on “stop-and-fondle,” and Khalif said officers who engaged in the activity should be charged with sexual assault. “We know that illegal stop-and-frisk happens all the time. It’s nothing new,” Khalif said Tuesday, but he underscored that underwear searches are something else. “It’s sexual assault. … If any of us went into someone’s underwear, that’s a crime.” As explained in the article, though police officers are allowed to feel for a weapon on an individual during a stop-andfrisk search, they aren’t allowed to feel in an individual’s underwear or private areas. To do a strip search, a suspect must be arrested, the search must be done in a police or medical building, and the search must be authorized by an authority other than the officer doing the search. However, multiple young black men reported having their privates

groped and probed by police, the Daily News found. On Tuesday, Khalif, along with several others, confronted officers at police headquarters, demanding to know why officers were searching into the underwear of individuals who are stopped for stop-and-frisk searches. Captain George Kappe, of the 26th District, who met with protestors outside, said he wasn’t familiar with the recent article, but he noted that officers may have to search a suspect carefully, for their own safety, to ensure the individual they are frisking isn’t armed with a weapon. “We are allowed to frisk for officer safety,” the captain said. Kappe also said that there are different restrictions that apply for the search of an individual, depending on if the person is stopped as a pedestrian stop-and-frisk or if there is probable cause for a search. “You don’t do that out in public,” Khalif replied. After a short back and forth, the captain retreated into the building while protesters stayed outside to continue their march. “You think this is common practice, and it’s not,” shouted Khalif through a bullhorn. “Anti-blackness anywhere is antiblackness everywhere.” Greg Brinkley, a private investigator and activist with People United for Justice and Equality, said he came to support the protest because he felt the practice is an abuse of authority. He noted that even in prison, to conduct a strip search of an inmate, an officer wanting to do the search would need approval from an authorized commanding officer.

BATHROOM RULING US appeals court sides with transgender student in bathroom case A U.S. appeals court on Tuesday aďŹƒrmed a lower court’s preliminary ruling that a transgender boy must be allowed to use the boys’ toilets at his high school in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Lawyers for Ashton Whitaker, 17, the transgender student behind the lawsuit, praised the decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit as the ďŹ rst instance of a federal

appeals court ruling that transgender students are protected under laws that ban discrimination in education. Whitaker’s family sued the Kenosha UniďŹ ed School District last year over its decision to forbid him from using the boys’ bathrooms at George Nelson Tremper High School because his birth certiďŹ cate designates him as female. The school district and Whitaker’s high school did not respond to requests for comment.

Whitaker’s is one of a string of legal battles on behalf of transgender people around the United States over the use of bathrooms in schools and public buildings, which has become one of the more divisive issues between conservatives and liberals in U.S. politics. A unanimous three-judge panel of the Seventh Circuit court in Chicago said in their ruling they agreed with a district court in Wisconsin that Whitaker was likely to face “irreparable

harm if banned from the boys’ bathrooms. The panel also ruled Whitaker would likely win his claim, which continues in the lower court, that the anti-discrimination law known as Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 protects transgender students. The ruling was dismissive of the school district’s argument that allowing Whitaker to use the boys’ bathrooms might infringe the privacy rights of other students. REUTERS

On Tuesday morning, the Philadelphia Police Department identified the 14-year-old boy who was killed during a Memorial Day multiple shooting in Kensington that also injured a 16-year-old boy. According to police, Tymier Fraiser, 14, was killed Monday evening following a shooting that occurred on the 2000 block of Orleans Street around 9:34 p.m. Officers arriving to reports of shots fired in that area found Fraiser unresponsive in the street with gunshot wounds to his neck and back, police said. The boy was trans-

ported to St. Christopher’s Hospital, where law enforcement officials said he was pronounced deceased at 10:03 p.m. After the shooting, police found a second victim, a 16-year-old boy — who police have not identified — along the 2000 block of nearby Birch Street, law enforcement officials said. The boy had suffered a gunshot wound to his left shoulder and, according to law enforcement officials, he was taken to St. Christopher’s Hospital where he was listed in stable condition as of Tuesday morning. So far, police officials said there have been no arrests following the shooting of these two boys, and they have not yet determined a motive for the shooting. This investigation is ongoing, law enforcement officials said.

Think of the 2016 NFL season — before Tom Brady’s fifth Super Bowl ring or Aaron Rodgers’ Hail Marys — and you’ll remember the storyline that almost took over the entire campaign. Former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick decided to take a stand against racial injustice in the United States by taking a knee during the national anthem. Several other protests followed around the league, as did backlash. The backlash hasn’t ceased for Kaepernick, who remains unemployed as all 32 NFL teams have already begun their offseason training programs. His former

teammate, Eagles wide receiver Torrey Smith, thinks there is something peculiar going on. “I am a firm believer in second chances,” Smith, who signed a two-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason, told the media after practice Tuesday. “My family has had a lot of legal issues in the past. If you make a mistake, it doesn’t mean you have to be that way forever. I believe in a second chance for a guy like Joe Mixon even though I am a strong advocate against domestic volence. I think you have to be open-minded to know [Kaepernick] didn’t commit a crime, he didn’t hurt anybody. He staged a protest. “You are willing to support guys who beat women. It doesn’t make sense to me.” The NFL has famously turned the other cheek, or has acted questionably when it has come to offfield issues like domestic volence. But somehow the league has been able

to move past it, allowing players with dark criminal histories to not only play but also make millions of dollars while acting as a role model for football fans everywhere. Yet Kaepernick’s political statement has thus far cost him a job for the 2017 season. “I think there’s different ways to look at being blackballed,” Smith said. “There may be teams coming in who don’t want him because he’s a backup, but at this point in the league, there are 96 quarterbacks on teams. You can’t tell me there are 96 quarterbacks better than him.” Just this week both the Seahawks and Giants decided against signing Kaepernick. That the backlash continues irks Smith in particular. “You hear some fans heckling,” Smith said. “People are mad at him during the anthem, isn’t that disrespectful? You’re walking down the stairs on your cell phone during the anthem — be consistent.”

LOST IN THE SWAMP

If someone asked me to distill the essential message of Donald Trump in the long, wild months leading up to his election it would be: You’re all wrong. Congress. The courts. The bureaucrats. Activists and analysts. The media. Especially the media. You don’t understand the American public. You have no idea how to run a government. You are lost in a swamp – crawling with cronies, favors, and illicit insider deals – that you have no desire to leave. I don’t say this to suggest his critique of the fetid culture of DC is inherently incorrect. A great many voters think he nailed it. But I will say it’s no way to make friends‌and right now he could dearly use a few. From his legislative agenda to the drawn-out process of assembling a complete White House team to the Russian investigations, President Trump is a man stuck in a mire. He desperately needs help to pull his administration forward – into legislative success, out of legal scrutiny – but fewer and fewer seem willing to even raise a torch to light the way, let alone haul him from the muck. Why? Just think about it. When he effectively declared himself the beacon of wisdom on how to resurrect the economy, stop terrorism, reform healthcare, promote ethics, rewrite immigration law, and “drain the swampâ€? of government, he alienated a great many of the

TOM FOREMAN Opinion CNN’s Tom Foreman is the author of the book “My Year of Running Dangerously.

political pros who – for better or worse – keep the wheels turning around here. He treated experienced Democrats, Independents and Republicans alike

as if they were incompetent, unprincipled, or cowardly toadies to the status quo. And many began seething. So now when the president needs a champion for his budget, a defender for his executive fiats, or even cheerleaders for his weekly assaults on all opponents foreign and domestic, you’ll largely notice the sound of crickets. And yet, crickets might be a blessing, because make no mistake: This president is in real danger of being pulled under by the quicksand of low approval ratings, legislative indifference, investigative scrutiny and political isolation. And after the way he’s treated everyone else in the “swamp – many of whom have worked years on improving government and addressing those very issues he rails against – few hands are reaching out to help him.

President Donald Trump called Germany’s trade and spending policies “very bad Tuesday, intensifying a row between the longtime allies and immediately earning himself the moniker “destroyer of Western values from a leading German politician. As the war of words threatened to spin out of control, Merkel and other senior German politicians stressed the importance of Germany’s Atlantic ties, with Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel suggesting the spat was just a rough patch. Trump took to Twitter early in the day in the United States to attack Germany, a day after Chancellor Angela Merkel ramped up her doubts about the reliability of Washington as an ally. “We have a MASSIVE

trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay FAR LESS than they should on NATO & military. Very bad for U.S. This will change, Trump tweeted. The tit-for-tat dispute escalated rapidly after Trump, at back-to-back summits last week, criticized major NATO allies over their military spending and refused to endorse a global climate change accord. On Sunday, Merkel showed the gravity of her concern about Washington’s dependability under Trump when she warned, at an election-campaign event in a packed Bavarian beer tent — that the times when Europe could fully rely on others were “over to a certain extent. Those comments, which caused shock in Washington, vented Europe’s frustration with Trump on climate policy in particular. And while

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Donald Trump GETTY IMAGES

German politicians sided with Merkel, Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel signaled that it was time for cooler heads to prevail. “The United States are older and bigger than the current conflict, he said, adding that relations would improve. “It is inappropriate that we are now communicating with each other between

a beer tent and Twitter, he said in Berlin. Merkel had already begun finessing her message Monday, stressing that she was a “convinced trans-Atlanticist, a message she repeated after a meeting with visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Berlin.  But Martin Schulz, leader of Gabriel’s center-left Social Democrats, was less emollient earlier in the day when he told reporters Trump was “the destroyer of all Western values. He added that the U.S. president was undermining the peaceful cooperation of nations based on mutual respect and tolerance. In Rome, Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni said he agreed with Merkel that Europe needed to forge its own path. REUTERS

Why Viagra Is Failing Men Soaring demand expected for new scientific advance made just for older men. Works on both men’s physical ability and their desire in bed. By Harlan S. Waxman Health News Syndicate

WORKS ON YOUR MIND AND YOUR BODY

New York – If you’re like the rest of us guys over 50, you probably already know the truth… Prescription ED pills may work, but they don’t solve all the probems in the bedroom and they are very expensive. Dr. Bassam Damaj, chief scientific officer at the world famous Innovus Pharma Laboratories, explains, “As we get older, we need more help in bed. Not only does our desire fade; but erections can be soft or feeble, one of the main complaints with prescription pills. Besides, they’re expensive… costing as much as $50.00 each.” Plus, it does nothing to stimulate your brain to want sex. “I don’t care what you take; if you aren’t interested in sex, you can’t get or keep an erection. It’s physiologically impossible,” said Dr. Damaj.

MADE JUST FOR MEN OVER 50 But now, for the first time ever, there’s a pill made just for older men. It’s called Vesele®. A new pill that helps you in bed by stimulating your body and your brainwaves. So Vesele® can work even when nothing else worked before. The new men’s pill is not a drug. It’s something completely different. Because you don’t need a prescription for Vesele®, sales are exploding. The maker just can’t produce enough of it to keep up with demand. Even doctors are having a tough time getting their hands on it. So what’s all the fuss about?

THE BRAIN CONNECTION Vesele® takes off where Viagra® only begins. Thanks to a discovery made by 3 Nobel-Prize winning scientists, Vesele® has become the first ever patented supplement to harden you and your libido. So you regain your desire as well as the ability to act on it. In a 16-week clinical study, scientists from the U.S.A. joined forces to prove Nitric Oxide’s effects on the cardio vascular system. They showed that Nitric Oxide could not only increase your ability to get an erection, it would also work on your brainwaves to stimulate your desire for sex. The results were remarkable and published in the world’s most respected medical journals.

THE SCIENCE The study asked men, 45 to 65 years old to take the main ingredient in Vesele® once a day. Then they were instructed not to change the way they eat or exercise but to take Vesele® twice a day. What happened next was remarkable. Virtually every man in the study who took Vesele® twice a day reported a huge difference in their desire for sex. In layman’s terms, they were horny again. They also experienced harder erections that lasted for almost 20 minutes. The placebo controlled group (who received sugar pills) mostly saw no difference. AN UNEXPECTED BONUS: The study results even showed an impressive increase in the energy, brain-power and memory of the participants.

Vesele Baseline Overall Satisfaction. . . . . . . . . . . . .88.1% Frequency of sex. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .79.5% Desire for sex. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .82% Hardness during sex. . . . . . . . . . . . .85.7% Duration of erection. . . . . . . . . . . . .79.5% Ability to satisfy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .83.3%

The new formula takes on erectile problems with a whole new twist. It doesn’t just address the physical problems of getting older; it works on the mental part of sex too. Unlike the expensive prescriptions, the new pill stimulates your sexual brain chemistry as well, actually helping you regain the passion and burning desire you had for your partner again. So you will want sex with the hunger and stamina of a 25-year-old.

SUPPLY LIMITED BY OVERWHELMING DEMAND “Once we saw the results we knew we had a game-changer said Dr. Damaj. We get hundreds of calls a day from people begging us for a bottle. It’s been crazy. We try to meet the crushing demand for Vesele®.”

New men’s pill overwhelms your senses with sexual desire as well as firmer, long-lasting erections. There’s never been anything like it.

VESELE® PASSED THE TEST “As an expert in the development of sexual dysfunction, I’ve studied the effectiveness of Nitric Oxide on the body and the brain. I’m impressed by the way it increases cerebral and penile blood flow. The result is evident in the creation of Vesele®. It’s sure-fire proof that the mind/body connection is unbeatable when achieving and maintaining an erection and the results are remarkable” said Dr. Damaj. HERE’S WHAT MEN ARE SAYING • I’m ready to go sexually and mentally. • More frequent erections at night and in the morning. I • have seen a change in sexual desire. • Typically take 1 each morning and 1 each night. Great Stamina, Great Results! • An increased intensity in orgasms. • My focus (mental) has really improved… Huge improvement. • Amazing orgasms! • I feel more confident in bed. HOW TO GET VESELE® This is the first official public release of Vesele® since its news release. In order to get the word out about Vesele®, Innovus Pharma is offering special introductory discounts to all who call. A special phone hotline has been set up for readers in your area to take advantage of special discounts during this ordering opportunity. The discounts will automatically be applied to all callers. The Special TOLLFREE Hotline number is 1-800-585-5774 and will be open 24-hours a day. Limited bottles of Vesele® are currently available in your region. Consumers who miss out on our current product inventory will have to wait until more become available. But this could take weeks. The maker advises your best chance is to call 1-800-585-5774 early.

Scott Disick, a 34-yearold mooch and father of three, was spotted feeling up Bella Thorne, a former Disney actress, at Cannes last week. It was pretty desperate. Ludacris really wants to hang with millennials

Ludacris and MTV are bringing socalled cult classic “Fear Factor” to a new generation, and I don’t like it. According to Bustle, the “Fast and the Furious” star plans to change things up by focusing on things young people care about. So less dangling out of a helicopter, and more roaming mode on their iPhone. Truly terrifying! “It still has the DNA of the original ‘Fear Factor’ but technology has changed over time, ” he told Bustle. “When you incorporate cellphones,

that is people’s biggest fears these days, losing their cellphones.” Wow! He has really chosen to go very literal here. Pretty sure whatever you get compensated for merely appearing

That’s a year’s salary, yo! “If they have to eat something crazy or drink something crazy, I’m there with like, a glass of wine,” he says. Presumably laughing maniacally. “I’m drinking my wine and throwing it in their face while they have to do the exact opposite.” OK, rude.

Make way for Fete Day at Elfreth’s Alley Imagine being asked by a tourist if your bathroom was redone. Not exactly the type of question you would expect from a visitor but then again, Neil Frauenglass doesn’t represent your typical tourist attraction. Neil is the president of the Elfreth’s Alley Association, a 501(c)3 nonprofit educational organization that helps to preserve and promote Elfreth’s Alley, the oldest continuously inhabited street in the country. Of the 32 homes that make up the Alley, 29 of them are private residences. The remaining three serve as a museum, an office space and a potential future exhibition. Residents are currently gearing up for their annual fundraiser, Fete Day, on Saturday, June 3, where they will open up their houses (including Neil’s) for locals and tourists alike to see, as he puts it, “how everyday Philadelphians are living 21st century lives in these 18th century homes. A native New Yorker, Neil

be celebrating their twoyear anniversary of living in the Alley this July. The tradition of Fete Day was started by Dorothy Ottey who moved into 115 Elfreth’s Alley in the mid-1920s. She had run a small kitchenette named Hearthstone out of her home and as the story goes, she had spoken to a group from city government and was told they had plans to demolish this area to make way for new construction. Dorothy knew this block

had a storied history and wasn’t ready to see it all torn down. So in 1934, she formed the Elfreth’s Alley Association with her fellow neighbors and created Fete Day, (short for festival), a carnival atmosphere with arts, crafts, musicians and, of course, open houses. Residents are not required to participate but Neil believes he and his fellow neighbors take great pride in showing off their homes. “To live in a national historical landmark where people from all over the world come and visit every day, that’s amazing. ALBERT LEE

The best movies coming Many titles are leaving this month, but there are plenty to take their place. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

“The Sixth Sense” (June 1) M. Night Shyamalan is cool again, thanks to the one-two punch comeback of “The Visit” and

(especially) the nutso “Split.” So, good time to point out that we’re not fans of the movie that made him a name? It’s not just that we guessed the twist. (We totally did. In your face.) It’s that, remove the ending, and there’s not much of a movie. That being said, we’d entertain the idea that we’re wrong. And since we’ve found much to admire in Shyamalan’s work over the years — even in “Lady in the

Water” — we’d even hazard to guess that a repeat viewing will reveal riches we didn’t see back in 1999.

“Young Frankenstein” (June 1) When Gene Wilder passed away last August, we nipped onto Netflix to see which of the actor’s classics we could griefstream. And there was nada. Eventually they got on the ball; right now

you can cue up “Blazing Saddles” and “Silver Streak.” And very soon you can do the same with “Young Frankenstein,” our pick for Wilder’s finest Mel Brooks teamup — not only because of all the jokes, but because of all the love Brooks put into recreating the Gothic look and scratchy feel of old Universal monster movies. It even has the “Puttin’ on the Ritz” cover to beat. Sorry, Taco.

“Catfight” (June 1) Somehow a movie in which Anne Heche and Sandra Oh keep beating the crap out of each other didn’t become an indie box office juggernaut. But Onur Tukel’s dark comedy has more to it than a trifecta of wailings. It’s a grouchy, shape-shifting satire that takes hilariously shocking hairpin turns every half hour. Each time our frenemy heroes duke it

out, the story suddenly jumps a handful of years, their fortunes dramatically changed, the world at large getting hilariously worse. You come for two acclaimed actresses coldcocking each other; you stay for a surprise dystopian comedy in which universal health care is suddenly obliterated.

to Neflix in June named David Lynch’s “Mulholland Dr.” the best movie of the aughts. We’d go with “Zodiac.” Audiences of 2007 were lured in by the idea of David Fincher, the director of “Seven,” tackling a true crime serial killer. What they got was a three-hour ode to OCD and the very human need to find closure even in stories that have none. We’ll almost certainly never know who the Zodiac Killer was, and

this furious procedural fills an epic length with endless dead ends — and with arguably Robert Downey Jr.’s finest and funniest turn.

“Moana” (June 20) When the latest Disney animated opus landed mere weeks after Election Day, it was hard not tear up at a feel-good adventure about a little girl facing her fears and coming out triumphant.

It should play just as gangbusters now, providing a pick-us-up when we still, six months later, need it.

“Okja” (June 28) We’re of two minds when it comes to Netflix producing original movies. On one hand, someone has to hand money to daring filmmakers to make movies Hollywood would never greenlight. On the other, they don’t

release these spectaculars in actual movie theaters. So take the latest Bong Joon-ho (“Snowpiercer”) any way you can. The tale of a little girl trying to keep government mitts off her giant, pig-like creature, it’s already premiered to raves at Cannes. And if the name “Bong Joon-ho” doesn’t get your attention, an international cast that includes Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal and Paul Dano should.

If you need some help getting your house ready for the warm summer weather, HGTV and Food Network star Taniya Nayak has a few suggestions. The 44-year-old interior designer and restaurateur has transformed many struggling eateries alongside Robert Irvine on “Restaurant: Impossible, so we decided to pick her brain over how to get our dining spaces in shape, and to find out what else is trending this season. Since you’re known for designing restaurants on “Restaurant: Impossible, have you noticed any new trends from the food world? More organic elements. A lot of texture. Whether it’s woven textures, natural wood, lighter, brighter, fresher — that’s the direction I see a lot of the restaurant design going into. Are there any design lessons from your experience working with restaurants that everyday people can incorporate into their homes? All the years of “Restaurant: Impossible, I was always thinking about the viewer watching. All those millions of people

did not own restaurants. How could they watch the show and get a takeaway from it? Basically, there are elements of color palates. There’s lighting, how to utilize lighting to create spaces. We see often now, in homes, the whole open floor plan concept. Nobody wants to be tucked away in a closed off kitchen anymore. There’s seems to be a shift to open floor plans. And using lighting to identify spaces, like light fixtures to identify the dining area, or a great fixture to identify a cozy little reading nook, whether it’s hanging from the

ceiling or a floor lamp. What about things people should avoid when considering new home dining designs? Don’t over do it. My best advice to anyone doing any renovations to their home, particularly for new home owners, limit the space a little bit. Don’t over-design it and over-plan it before you get in. Get in, get the bare bones minimum of what you need — your bed, your couch, whatever — but really limit it to that space. You’re going to find that the spaces are not what you may have thought before living

Do you have any summer dÊcor recommendations? I love to advise people to keep the base furniture, like the big pieces, keep that somewhat neutral. That could be gray, white, something that’s like a blank slate. They bring in pops of color or your seasonal changes to the accents. So it could be drapery, it could be an area rug, it could be a throw pillow. Those things that you can change out easily. (SBOJUF $06/5&35014 JOTUBMMFE

Quietly, sidearmer Neshek has become Phillies’ best pitcher One of the few bright spots for the Phillies this season has been reliable Pat Neshek. JON MARKS @MetroPhilly

sports@metro.us

It may surprise you to know the man who’s quietly become the Phillies’ most effective pitcher this season has done this before. And while that might not seem like such an accomplishment on a team that had dropped 23 of its last 29 games following a loss on Memorial Day, the fact remains 36-year-old Pat Neshek has been pretty close to unhittable. The bearded sidearming righthander, who overcame Tommy John surgery early in his career, has been frustrating

hitters for more than a decade. In 2014, after signing a minor league contract with the Cardinals, he was so efficient he was named to the All-Star team finishing up that season 7-2 with a 1.87 ERA and six saves. From there it was on to Houston and then to Philly this winter for cash considerations. Consider it money well spent for the man who’s helped solidify a bullpen that was under siege the first six weeks of the season. The key to his success, like side-winding predecessors Kent Tekulve and the late Dan Quisenberry, is that hitters just aren’t used to seeing the ball come at them from a different angle and simply don’t know how to make the adjustment. “The biggest part of

my game is deception,” Neshek said. “It took me a little while to realize that. I used to think with my slider and fastball, I could get up on anybody. It’s good stuff, but when you mix in that deception and where the ball’s going, it takes hitters awhile to figure it out.” By then its usually too late, especially with Neshek’s ability to throw strikes. He’s walked just three in 18 1/3 innings while striking out 15. For his career he’s dealt just 123 free passes in 443 innings, with 393 Ks. “I don’t think anybody throws like that, and when a guy’s had success like he’s had it’s fun to catch him,” said Phils’ catcher Cameron Rupp. “The reactions I hear from hitters are priceless. They start laughing, ‘How am I

Pat Neshek has provided the Phillies’ middling bullpen a boost amid a drearily ugly season.

supposed to hit this?’’’ Neshek didn’t start out this way, though. After playing at Butler he started off in the Twins organization in 2002. By 2006 he’d climbed the ladder to the majors, where things were progressing well until 2008 when his arm started hurting, resulting in the Tommy John surgery. That forced him to miss the entire 2009 season and pitch only a combined 53.1 innings over the next three years while he regained his strength

ela. “The energy from the other countries was just remarkable, something I’ve never experienced.” Team USA took it from there, winning the tournament. And Pat Neshek has been on a roll ever since. “I’m just riding a lot of good outings,” Neshek said. “As far as leaving Houston, it was very welcome. I knew I could do a lot more. To me my role wherever I’m used is just go out and put up zeroes.” For the 2017 Phillies, no one has done it better.

Eagles’ Schwartz hesitant to call secondary better … yet The Eagles addressed the cornerback position this offseason, but will the secondary actually be better in 2017? EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

Jalen Mills will be an important part of Philly’s secondary in 2017.

It’s been said so much by Eagles fans, it’s nearly a broken record. The Birds have had a terrible secondary in recent years. Will it be better in 2017? After adding veteran

GETTY IMAGES

free agent cornerback Patrick Robinson and drafting Sidney Jones and Rasul Douglas, Philadelphia clearly knows it’s an area of need. They addressed it during the offseason, but even-keeled defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz isn’t quick to provocate by calling his secondary much improved. When asked if the cornerbacks would be be better in 2017, Schwartz said: “We’ll find out during the season for sure. The final determination in everything we do from preperation to drafting to signing free agents to coaching schemes — it all comes to light during the season. It’s a little too early to evaluate and we are working through a lot of different stuff. It certainly is a situation of importance for us.” The Eagles secondary actually improved under Schwartz’s first year in 2016. A year prior in 2015,

Philly allowed the fourth most passing yards in the NFL per game (267.1). Last year, the team allowed 239.5 yards per game, actually good for the 13th best in football. The scoring defense was in the middle of the pack last year, too, allowing the 17th most touchdowns per game through the air. Much of the credit can go to the safety tandem of Malcolm Jenkins and Rodney McLeod. Schwartz is no doubt hoping the veteran leaders he has at safety rub off on the incoming cornerbacks. “I think that we’ll see where that goes,” Schwartz said when asked if the secondary would be better in 2017. “We go in just about any position, we don’t expect anthing. We don’t expect our [defensive] line to be better this year. That will probably make a bad quote, but what I am trying to get to — I don’t know the

best way to put it — but you maybe take for granted that you add a couple players and you are going to be better. This is a tough business and things change and you can’t take anything for granted.” The addition of Jones will be a long-term benefit for the team, as the projected first-round pick (drafted in the second round) continues to rehab from a torn ACL. But, according to Schwartz, teams shouldn’t sleep on returning starter Jalen Mills with veterans Ron Brooks and Robinson also expected to start the year. “His challenge is creating that consistency,” Schwartz said looking back at Mills’ up-anddown rookie year. “The experience that comes from a year being out there, being thrown into the fire — he should be able to benefit that going down the road.”

It appears the Eagles are trying to not only replicate the success they’ve had in recent years with running back, slot receiver and punt returner Darren Sproles — they are attempting to double down on it. After drafting Donnel Pumphrey in the fourth round — a player with a similar body-type (small) and skill set (fast) to Sproles — the team has been practicing with two running backs on the field at the same time. And according to the 5-foot-8 Pumphrey, the duo could be lethal playing together. “So far I am loving the offense,â€? said Pumphrey, who was a workhorse at San Diego State, compiling the most carries of all time over four years as an Aztec. “The two running back sets, our little pony set with me and Sproles, it helps the offense a lot.

We are both versatile-type backs and we can make guys miss.â€? An outside observer, tight end Brent Celek, surmises that defenses could have a lot of trouble figuring out how to defend the two small running backs. “You put [Sproles] and Pumphrey on the field together, how is a defense going to react?â€? Celek said. “Just with our size,â€? Pumphrey continued Tuesday, following a solid practice in the rain at Eagles’ OTAs. “We are able to get behind those big linemen and get to the next level and make guys miss out in space. Pumphrey didn’t do much work on special teams in college, but that’s because the Aztecs wanted preserve his body for his mighty workload running the football. He says he practiced a lot of it at school, which

explains why he looks so comfortable returning punts in practice. It’s his ability as a football player to do whatever he’s called upon to do that can give him a lot of value in the NFL. Sproles has said the 2017 would be his last, so perhaps Pumphrey is his logical successor. “Our two running back set, I am going to have to show I can move around and do a lot of different things, Pumphrey said. “This will be Sproles’ last year. I want to stay under

his wing and learn.â€? Pumphrey will need to both continue to learn and perform on the field, as he’ll be competing with Sproles, LeGarrette Blount, Wendell Smallwood, Byron Marshall and Corey Clement for a spot on the 53-man roster at running back. “You can tell the game is way faster,â€? Pumphrey said. “The way the linebackers are flowing, these NFL linebackers are fast, it just means I have to pick my game up.â€? EVAN MACY
