PM MAY AFTER ATTACK: ‘ENOUGH IS ENOUGH’

TRUMP TO HIT ROAD FOR SOUTHEAST ASIA STEPS UP AS ISIS THREAT MOUNTS A JOBS-FOCUSED RESET

Prime Minister Theresa May said Britain had to be tougher in stamping out Islamist extremism after attackers killed at least seven people by ramming a van into pedestrians on London Bridge and stabbing revelers in nearby bars. After the third militant attack in Britain in less than three months, May said Thursday’s national election would go ahead. But she proposed regulating cyberspace and said

Britain had been far too tolerant of extremism. “It is time to say enough is enough,” the Conservative leader said outside her Downing Street office, where British flags flew at half-staff. “We cannot and must not pretend that things can continue as they are,” May said, adding that Britain was under attack from a new breed of crude copycat militants. President Donald Trump will hit the road next week to ramp up his long-promised plan to overhaul the nation’s aging airports, roads and railways, a push that could energize his supporters and distract from political intrigue in Washington. The infrastructure push — which will include a trip to Cincinnati, Ohio — comes as the White House seeks to refocus attention on core promises to

boost jobs and the economy made by Trump last year during his campaign for office. Those pledges have been eclipsed by the political furor over Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 U.S. election. That drama will come to a head on Thursday when former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey, who was leading the Russia probe until Trump fired him, testifies before a U.S. Senate panel. Southeast Asian nations plan to use spy planes and drones to stem the movement of militants across their porous borders, defense officials said at the weekend, as concerns rise over the growing clout of Islamic State in the region. Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines said they will launch joint air patrols this month at their shared boundaries in the Sulu Sea, in addition to existing

maritime patrols. Authorities in the region have urged greater cooperation to counter the fallout from a raging battle with Islamic Statelinked militants in the southern Philippines, the biggest warning yet that the ultraradical group is building a base in Southeast Asia. REUTERS

The wife of an Alberta, Canada, man who mowed his lawn with a tornado swirling behind him says the twister wasn’t as close it appears in the image, but the image that Cecilia Wessels took of her husband Theunis has caused a bit of a storm on social media. She took the picture on Friday as the twister passed near their home in Three Hills, Alberta. Theunis Wessels says he was keeping his eye on the tornado as he cut his grass. On Facebook, Cecilia wrote, “My beast mowing the lawn with a breeze in his hair.”

FACEBOOK REACTS TO LATEST TERROR ATTACKS

Facebook said it wanted to make its social media platform a “hostile environment” for terrorists in a statement issued after attackers killed seven people in London and prompted Prime Minister Theresa May to demand action from internet firms. Three attackers rammed a hired van into pedestrians on London Bridge and stabbed others nearby on Saturday night in Britain’s third major militant attack in recent

months. May responded to the attack by calling for an overhaul of the strategy used to combat extremism, including a demand for greater international regulation of the internet, saying big internet companies were partly responsible for providing extreme ideology the space to develop. “We want Facebook to be a hostile environment for terrorists,” said Simon Milner, Director of Policy at Facebook in an emailed statement. Protecting Boston’s waterfront for future generations Imagine Boston 2030: The city’s plan for the future includes making Boston’s waterfront climate-resilient while building it up as a destination. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

kristin.toussaint@metro.us

After President Donald Trump announced last week he would pull the U.S. out of the Paris climate accord, Mayor Marty Walsh assured Boston that its efforts to curb the effects of climate change would continue undeterred. Climate protection efforts are crucial, Walsh said, to a coastal city like Boston, and Imagine Boston 2030, the first citywide plan in 50 years, includes several initiatives aimed at curbing and preparing our coastal city for climate change as part of creating a waterfront for future generations. “It’s a challenge,â€? said Ellen Douglas, a hydrology professor and graduate program director at UMass Boston’s School for the Environment. “If you plan right, you can make sure co-benefits come with the protective plans.â€? The Imagine Boston 2030 plan divides up flood-protection investments into two categories: nature-based (“greenâ€?) or hard-engineered (“grayâ€?). Some Boston scientists are already investigating a “sea wallâ€? to block what a recent city report on climate change predicted would be ocean levels 18 inches higher by 2050, and double that by 2070. A concrete wall would be “grayâ€? flood protection, Douglas said. While necessary in some areas, those infrastructures can also have “unintended con-

sequencesâ€? because they don’t dissipate the energy of a wave or flood, but just “reflectâ€? it to another area. That’s why it’s important to mix in “greenâ€? protections, she said, like an oyster reef or beach dune, which help dissipate the wave’s energy as it approaches land. Open spaces can be set aside for recreation, like parks, and then also serve as a flood channel in case of a disaster, so the water is directed into an area that doesn’t damage buildings, and Imagine Boston 2030 includes proposals for added open spaces and parks. Protecting a “waterfront for future generationsâ€? includes plans for accessibility, economic opportunities, active cultural resources and recreational opportunities. “What do we need to do along the entire waterfront around the region to both protect all of the land behind it and the various investments made and people’s lives and livelihood, while at same time turning it into really viable and exciting space that connects us to the harbor?â€? asked Kathy Abbott, president and CEO of Boston Harbor Now. Abbott said the Imagine Boston 2030 plan for the waterfront is “a good effort,â€? but said she would work with the city to expand it even further. “Boston is 48 square miles of land and 41 square miles of water, and most of that is harbor and by definition public,â€? she said. To her, a waterfront for future generations means one “really owned by everyone, and used by everybody.â€? Metro Boston will examine a different aspect of the Imagine Boston 2030 plan every week. Tweet your thoughts about whether the plans will work and what Boston needs to us @MetroBos.

TRUMP’S AMERICA

OPINION

JAMES COMEY SWEARS TO TELL THE TRUTH

ELLIS HENICAN @henican

Washington is on pins and needles. The TV networks are expecting boffo ratings, and outraged Democrats are licking their chops. But a crucial question still lingers as James Comey prepares for his very big Thursday on Capitol Hill: How much more damage will the ousted FBI director do to Donald Trump? You have to say “more here. Comey has already severely squeezed the cornered president, raising uncomfortable questions about obstruction of justice in the ever-deepening Russian-hacking probe. With Thursday’s hearing approaching, Comey seems uniquely poised to squeeze some more. As Virginia’s

Politicians on both sides of the aisle will eagerly be watching James Comey’s testimony on Thursday. GETTY IMAGES

Mark Warner, ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, put it on CNN yester-

day: “Clearly, it would be very, very troubling if the president of the United States is interfering in investigations that ‌ affect, potentially, the president and his closest associates.â€? In a one-on-one battle of credibility, the meticulous ex-director starts with a distinct advantage over the truthchallenged president. Ask yourself, if one said

it was day, and the other said it was night, which one would you believe? So what about evidence and proof ? Will Comey deliver his own written notes backing up the many media reports that Trump pressured him into dropping the Russian investigation? What other evidence has the fired director kept to himself until now?

Knowing Comey, there must be something. He is a trained investigator with decades of law enforcement experience. If

there are two things he knows, they are how to trap a weaseling target and how to build a compelling case. No one can say for certain how far Comey will go. Some things he may save for his private session with the committee, some things he may hold back at the request of special counsel Robert Mueller. This much is almost certain to be true: By Thursday afternoon, no one can blame anonymous sources or slanted media reports. The ex-FBI director will be speaking in public and under oath. It’s probably too much to expect that this will shake Trump’s hard-core 38 percent. But this isn’t: By Thursday night, a wounded president will be even more wounded, and an ousted FBI agent will still be on his feet. Kendall Jenner also thinks Caitlyn’s memoir is a hot mess Former Pepsi ambassador Kendall Jenner is just as frustrated with Caitlyn Jenner’s so-called memoir as older sister Kim. And she’s venting about it on “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” as you do. “I heard about all the stuff that she was saying [in the book] and just how a lot of it’s so not true,” said the 21-year-old. “The weird part is, I don’t think it’s purposeful lying. I think she really just thinks that’s what happened for some weird reason.” Yes, Kendall. It does appear that way! But also? Kendall is confused about how Caitlyn is bad-mouthing the children she raised. I mean, it’s obviously for the big fat paycheck, but

Don’t we all?

Kendall never considers that. “And then she goes around dissing the Kardashians, but it’s like, those are the kids that you raised!” She continued, “That makes no sense

in a relationship for a few months. Now, E! reports that keeping this whole thing as secretive as possible is still her main goal. Even though she is failing magnificently. “It was her goal to keep it a secret even though it’s all really light still. She barely told any of her friends.” I find it very suspicious that a person like Swift could just have information like this leaked without her express permission. She’s got to be behind it, right?

Did Scott Disick skip out on his kids to go on a bender? “A joke. That’s what I thought. Twitter is not made for personal essays of any sort, so he wrapped it up. “Kathy … F— them. F— them all … Trump is such a senile idiot, all he has is Twitter fights.” Wow, that’s a pretty weak burn if I do say so myself.

According to TMZ, Scott Disick’s most recent bender — the one where he very publicly squeezed various parts of Bella Thorne’s 19-year-old body — climaxed right at the two week mark. There was some concern about whether or not he was coming home. And whether or not he would get around to seeing his kids. Thankfully, on Saturday, the 34-yearold was spotted with his two eldest, Mason and Penelope. But his

TELEVISION

The evolution of ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ How did you prepare to live with that intense emotional load this season? CD: It’s very interesting to see how the losses affect you in a show like this. It made me think about where we really are, and how it affects you and the others around you.

Actors Kim Dickens, Colman Domingo and Danay Garcia on how they’re surviving the zombie apocalypse this season. LUZ LANCHEROS MWN letters@metro.us

The postapocalyptic television series “Fear the Walking Dead” focuses on two families dealing with a world that collapses — thanks to an inopportune invasion of the flesh-eating undead. Damn zombies always ruining things. The show — which returned last night at 9 p.m. on AMC — saw the demise of Western civilzation last season. But where can we expect these characters to go in season three? We spoke with Kim Dickens, Danay Garcia and Colman Domingo on set to learn more about their character’s transformation.

Victor, Madison and Luciana are in survival mode in Season three of AMC’s “Fear of the Walking Dead.”COURTESY OF AMC

What can people expect in this season from your characters? Kim Dickens: I think it’s more intense. … We see more violence. [My character Madison] becomes more ruthless and dark, because of what the circumstances require of her — and her goal is to rebuild civilization for her family. Colman Domingo: [Vic-

tor is] fine as he is. The second season was the destruction of Western civilization, the third season is about surviving. The characters do things that they would never have thought of, they’re becoming different people. They become what they fear. Danay Garcia: When [these characters] arrive in Mexico, they’re

strangers. Now they act as if they were at home. They’re no longer afraid to go out and survive, like before. How does the relationship between your characters change? DG: There is an adjustment period. As Luciana, I am now part of the family and it’s the first time I see

Nick with his mother. I see him as a son and a brother and it’s somewhat uncomfortable. KD: Strand and Madison created this bond in the beginning, and now it’s interesting to see how their paths will be very different. In Madison’s case, she has to see Luciana as part of the family, through Nick.

How did your characters take you out of comfort zone? KD: The action, I’d never done so many action scenes before. I loved it. I’m also somewhat familiar with the apocalyptic genre, since I did a show that [takes place] after Hurricane Katrina. Then I did “Deadwood,” which was apocalyptic, in the Wild West, so it wasn’t so different. CD: It was a genre that I didn’t understand at first, but now I love it. The scripts have depth and complexity. You also learn new skills and do things you never imagined. We’re very lucky.

LEARN ABOUT THE TOP CAREERS OF

2017

Learn about the various roles of this indemand profession. SARA FEINSTEIN @SaraBFeinstein

sara.feinstein@metro.us

You might only think of an optometrist when it’s time to go in for your annual eye exam, but these physicians are responsible for more than just that. After years of specialized training, they can also detect more serious issues like hypertension, and even an array of autoimmune disorders. We spoke with Dr. Karla Zadnik, president of the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry to find out more about the field. What does an optometrist do? Optometrists are the main providers of vision care. They’re responsible for performing eye exams and prescribing contact lenses and glasses to correct issues like nearsightedness and farsightedness, but there’s a lot more to the job than just that. “In the last 30 years, optometry’s scope of practice has expanded significantly so that they can actually diagnose and treat many diseases ranging anywhere from pink eye [conjunctivitis] all the way to more serious issues like glaucoma and diabetes,” says Zadnik. What schooling do you need? After completing a fouryear doctor of optometry program, hopeful optometrists need to pass

the National Board of Examiners in Optometry exam to receive a license to practice. Those who are looking to specialize in a certain area can then go on to complete a voluntary one-year residency. “Let’s say that somebody gets out of school and they just loved working with children. They might do a pediatric vision residency for a year,” says Zadnik. ”Or maybe they really liked working with elderly patients who are visually impaired — those students might choose to do a one year residency in vision rehabilitation.” What’s the typical salary? The median annual salary for optometrists is $ 117,580, according to the most recent reports by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The best-paid in the profession made $192,050 while the lowest-paid made $52,810. Finding employment The future for optometrists is very bright. For one, “there’s the aging baby boomers — and we know that eye problems occur more frequently as we age,” says Zadnik. There’s also been an increase in children with undetected eye problems, she continues. “Between both the aging population and children, there’s this ongoing and enormous uptick in the demand

that requires optometrist services.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 27 percent employment rise between 2014 and 2024, during which 11,000 new jobs will open up. The pros This is a very attractive profession for those who want to maintain a work life balance, says Zadnik. And unlike most medical fields, you don’t have to worry about the stress of being constantly on call, says Zadnik. “The nature of the profession is not one that would require you to be getting up in the middle of the night, and going in to see a patient at 3 o’clock in the morning.” The cons In recent years, an optometrist’s job has become threatened by new technologies. “There’s been an increase in places advertising eye exams that can be done by sitting at your computer, in the privacy of your own home,” she explains. “Optometry used to be sort of a cash-and-carry kind of healthcare profession — that is somebody would come in and pay for their eye exam — but now optometry is much more like the rest of healthcare in that they’re dealing with third-party payers.”

2017 PATRIOTS SHOULD BE BETTER THAN 2007 TEAM THAT DOMINATED NFL OPINION

MATT BURKE @burke_metro

Everything Bill Belichick does is scrupulous and planned intricately. In the fantastic “Bill Belichick: A Football Life” documentary, he said that you could point to just about any day on the calendar two or three years down the road and he could probably tell you what he was doing on that specific day. In other words, the guy knows full well that it’s 2017. The 2017 NFL season will mark the 10-year anniversary of the most tumultuous season in Patriots history. Set off by the Spygate accusations, the Patriots absolutely shredded the league in the regular season – going an NFL record 16-0. But we all know what happened in the desert on Feb. 3, 2008. It was the most brutal defeat Belichick and the Patriots have ever suffered, because it would be next to impossible to ever be on that stage again. Sure, they could win a Super Bowl or two again, but going undefeated? 19-0? That opportunity would surely never arise again. But here we are in 2017. Ten years later. And many are expecting that opportunity to arise again. It’s almost like Belichick had a 10-year plan in place after that loss to the Giants. In the first few years post-Super Bowl XLII, he would have to radically change his aging defense. The offense would now rely heavily on the tight end. The free agent spending would be held in check. The Patriots would be smart with their money, but would always be in contention. Funny s— happens in the playoffs. Have teams good enough to be in the mix each and every year. The breaks will go your

way some years (the Malcolm Butler play in the Seattle Super Bowl, everything that happened in the second half of the Atlanta game), and other years it will not (the missed PAT by Stephen Gostkowski in last year’s AFC title game, the Mario Manningham catch in the second Giants Super Bowl). But this upcoming season already feels different. This is a statement that will make the fan bases of the other 31 teams in the league spew chunks, but it’s like the Patriots are bored by winning Super Bowls at this point. The only thing really left to accomplish for the Patriots is to grab pro football’s Holy Grail: a perfect 19-0 season. Belichick has bucked so many of his own trends this offseason, that you’ve got to wonder if this is now the focus. He had little use for 2017 draft picks, little use for young, cheap players a couple weeks back. He acquired that sexy outside receiver that so many had been clamoring for since Randy Moss left, in Brandin Cooks. He made trades for Kony Ealy and Dwayne Allen. He signed

a high priced cornerback in Stephon Gilmore. He held on to Malcolm Butler when he could have obtained a high draft pick. He showed Dont’a Hightower the money. And he brought in Rex Burkhead despite the team already having about 22 quality running backs already on their roster. This just feels like it’s part of a well-orchestrated plan, and that the time is right for the Pats to completely eviscerate the league. Now one would have thought that Belichick would want to “load up” in 2015 and 2016, while Tom Brady was going through all the Deflategate B.S. in order to raise double middle fingers to the entire NFL. But the Pats were their typical selves when it came to acquiring and dumping players in those years. For Belichick, “loading up” too early would be straying away from his longterm plan. That long-term plan, a 10-year plan, is expected to culminate this season. What’s Bill Belichick going to be doing on the night of Feb. 4, 2018 in Minnesota? He very well could be basking in the glow of the first 19-0 season in NFL history.
