MAN SHOT IN PARIS TRUMP BLOCK OF TWITTER RUSSIA SCRAMBLES JET AFTER ATTACKING POLICE USERS VIOLATES RIGHTS TO INTERCEPT US BOMBER
1
A man armed with a hammer shouted “This is for Syria” before attacking police officers on Tuesday outside France’s Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, the interior minister said. The assailant wounded one officer before he was shot and wounded by other officers. The Paris prosecutor’s office swiftly began a counterterrorism investigation. Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said the attacker was carrying the
identification card of an Algerian student. He said preliminary information indicated the attacker had acted alone. Dozens of armed police sealed off the area and the cathedral in central Paris that is visited by millions of tourists every year was locked down while the security forces secured the area. REUTERS

A free-speech institute on Tuesday sent a letter to President Donald Trump demanding the prolific tweeter unblock certain Twitter users on grounds the practice violates the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Trump’s @realDonaldTrump account recently blocked a number of accounts that replied to his tweets with commentary that criticized, mocked or disagreed with his
actions. Twitter users are unable to see or respond to tweets from accounts that block them. The Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University in New York said in its letter that the blocking suppressed speech in a public forum protected by the Constitution. The White House did not respond to a request for comment. Twitter Inc. said it had no comment. REUTERS

Russia scrambled a Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jet on Tuesday to intercept a U.S. B-52 strategic bomber which it said was flying close to its border over the Baltic Sea, Russia’s Defense Ministry said. Russian air defense systems detected the bomber at around 10 a.m. Moscow time as it was flying over neutral waters parallel to the Russian border, the ministry said in a statement.
“The Russian SU-27 crew, having approached at a safe distance, identified the aircraft as an American B-52 strategic bomber and escorted it” until such time as it changed course and flew away from the border area, the ministry said. Russia said the SU-27 had been scrambled from its Baltic Fleet air defense unit which is based in Kaliningrad. REUTERS

UBER FIRES 20 AFTER HARASSMENT PROBE

Uber Technologies Inc. told staff on Tuesday that it had fired 20 employees following an internal investigation into harassment and related claims by law firm Perkins Coie, a person familiar with the matter said. The law firm, which is investigating in parallel with a broader probe by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, investigated 215 harassment complaints going back as far as 2012, employees were told.
Uber told staff it had taken remedial action in 58 cases and decided no action was needed on 100 more. Other investigations are continuing, the person said. The company also told staff it would expand its employee relations unit to better investigate claims and that it would dramatically increase management training since most Uber managers were first-time bosses, the person said. Beating paranoia in the age of terrorism and the 24-hour news cycle Psychologist Dr. Steven Rosenberg talks about the effects of “terrorphobia.” ERIN TIERNAN @ErinTiernan
erin.tiernan@metro.us
Last August a panicked stampede sent bags flying as travelers fled after they heard there was an active shooter at New York City’s JFK Airport. In April, also in New York City, rush-hour commuters ran from Penn Station in fear for their lives after a Taser was mistaken for gunshots. Following the massacre at the Bataclan Theater in Paris in November 2015, a vigil erupted into a panic after someone set off firecrackers. And on Saturday, as a terror attack was ongoing that ultimately left seven dead in London, more than 1,400 people were injured in Turin, Italy, after a loud noise later determined to be fireworks sparked a stampede in a crowded city square. Each of these instances can be traced back to what Dr. Steven Rosenberg calls “terrorphobia.” “This is the type of fear where people fear going out to places because they see nightclubs getting blown up or shot up, people dying,” Rosenberg said. “Basically it’s the feeling that there’s going to be something happening when you go and attend something public, or it’s the waiting for some terrorist action to happen and watching the news constantly to monitor.” The prevalence of anxiety disorders is on the rise in the western world. Affecting 18 percent of the U.S. population, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S. as well as in
Europe. Rosenberg said that can be traced back to the uncertainty of today’s world. Along with genetics, brain chemistry and personality, a major trigger for anxiety disorders is life events, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. Rosenberg said he believes overexposure to terrorist attacks in recent years directly correlates with the epidemic of panic and anxiety disorders. In 2017 alone there have been 535 terrorist attacks with 3,635 fatalities across the globe. The most recent and reported on attacks being the London Bridge and Borough Market, which claimed seven lives. One week before, 23 were killed when a suicide bomber attacked an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester. “People see this, read about it, see it and then get themselves involved in it, look at it on their phones, watch it on television and get very, very fearful of it,” Rosenberg said. “It could happen anywhere, is their thought — while walking down their city street.” The fact that Americans are far more likely to die in a car crash than at the hands of a terrorist might not calm a terrorphobe’s mind, but Rosenberg said the best thing to do is to take a break from the news, maintain your usual routines and try to accept uncertainty in the world. “And you’ve got to be looking at the fact that fear is in many cases not real. The acronym for fear is ‘False Events Appear Real,’ because in your mind you think it’s going to happen in your own hometown — it’s not a real event, but it appears real when you begin talking about it and feeding into it,” he said.

Family files lawsuit over man slain by police while looking for parking spot Richard Ferretti’s family is suing for answers as to how officers pulling over their unarmed family member ended up shooting him to death. HAYDEN MITMAN @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
After more than a year without hearing from officials on what caused the reportedly unprovoked police shooting that ended the life of 52-year-old Richard Ferretti, his family’s attorneys announced Tuesday that they are suing to find answers. “We are at 398 days and counting, said Kenneth M. Rothweiler, the attorney who is representing Lisa and Donald Newman, the sister and brother-in-law of Ferretti. “And we are waiting. Ferretti was reportedly shot and killed by police officer Shannon Coolbaugh on the evening of May 4, 2016, while he was circling the 6300 block of Overbrook Avenue. Rothweiler said that Ferretti was looking for parking at around 1 a.m. in the moments before he was fatally shot by police. Since then, the attorney said, Ferretti’s family has heard no results of an internal police investigation into the shooting, no update on the work status of Coolbaugh — other than the fact that she has been taken off the street — and no results of a grand jury investigation into whether she should face charges. The DA’s office declined to comment on the case or the lawsuit. “They don’t have any answers at all, and they
deserve answers, said Rothweiler. “We have heard nothing. According to Rothweiler, the officers involved in the lawsuit filed in Philly federal court — it is aimed at Coolbaugh, two unnamed officers and the city, and it seeks more than $150,000 in damages — acted against standard police procedure when they fired five times at a moving car, hitting Ferretti three times. “They completely violated their own policies when they shot into that car and killed my client, he said. Rothweiler said that, on the night of the shooting, police were called because Ferretti’s van was seen driving suspiciously. Rothweiler said that the officers had no reason to believe he was armed — he wasn’t — and after trying to get Ferretti to pull over, they fired into the driver’s side window of the vehicle after witnesses said they heard Ferretti scream, “I’m stopping, I’m stopping. Also, Rothweiler said he recently visited the intersection at 63rd Street and Overbrook Avenue and noticed several surveillance cameras in the area. If footage exists from the night of the shooting, he said, they haven’t seen it, but they should. In referencing policeinvolved fatal shootings nationwide, Rothweiler said that the citizens of Philadelphia should be outraged that a fellow Philadelphian can get gunned down by police with no repercussions for the officers involved for over a year. If video exists of the incident, he said, Rothweiler believes the community would be outraged by what happened that night.

How I rock climbed my way to the top Cassie Hepler gets her hands dirty with the “mental puzzle of rock climbing. CASSIE HEPLER @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
Would you put your life in someone else’s hands? That’s pretty much the gist of indoor rock climbing using the top rope method at Philadelphia Rock Gym. Top rope is climbing up ropes to the top of a rock gym wall, a boulder, a cliff, a bridge or whatever you have the top of the rope attached to. If you’re anything like me, you get bored with the same gym routine. It’s like spending all week doing the rat race only to go to the gym and run in a hamster wheel for a couple hours. If you want mindless exercise, this is not for you. But if you crave a mental puzzle, emotional fulfillment and a physical workout, this is it. And with an intro class, you get two weeks free at any of their locations minus the rental price of equipment (harness, shoes). The last time I rock climbed, I was a teen at a high-adventure summer camp, and I can still recall the delightful taste of adrenaline-filled victory as I scaled the top of that cliff. So I reached out to the East Falls location (larger, taller locations include Oakes, Coatesville and Wyncote) and we were in like Flynn. Arriving after yoga class (which I don’t recommend — do it in the morning, when you have the most energy), we were led through a series of instruction classes by our amazing teacher, Tom. We learned how to properly tie knots, wear almost-tootight climbing shoes with Velcro, secure our “look at my crotch harnesses and use the proper lingo, with terms like “belay on,
Cassie Hepler with friend Justin Swezey at the Philadelphia Rock Gym in East Falls. COURTESY OF CASSIE HEPLER
“climb on, “take and “coming down to help you stay in unison with your partner. Trust is key, and keeping the rope taut is important, so in case your climbing partner loses their grip and falls, you will be there to catch them. The metaphors do run deep. Rock climbing is a great way to lose weight, get in shape, meet new (healthy) people, build confidence and overcome a fear of heights. Climbing is challenging and addictive as well, like solving a vertical puzzle. Once set free on our own, we were flying up those walls like nobody’s business. I even suggested skipping to a more challenging level, but by the time we got to my last climb, I could barely get off the ground. Encourag-
“If you want mindless exercise, this is not for you. Cassie Hepler
ing teacher Tom popped by and suggested some other angles to climb, but it was as if my arms weighed 250 pounds. One of the slim female workers cruised by, climbed in front of us like a weightless monkey and said to use my legs more — to which I muttered, “It’s easy when you weigh 100 pounds. After climbing for four hours, I was spent and slightly frustrated with my lack of upper -body strength. Tom reminded me our bodies were fatiguing at this point. Will I be back? Most likely — right after I cut off my naturally long fingernails and can climb on real rocks outside, which they also offer after passing a test. Because for me, it’s all about nature.

Reality Leigh Winner is accused of leaking NSA documents on the alleged Russian hacking of the 2016 election. ERIN TIERNAN @ErinTiernan
erin.tiernan@metro.us
On Monday, a 25-year-old federal contractor was charged with leaking information on Russia’s alleged election hacking. The Intercept published a series of National Security Agency documents alleging interference by Russian hackers beyond what was already known. The documents said Russian hackers had attempted to infiltrate one of the major voting software companies in the U.S. and influence more than 120 local election officials in advance of the
November presidential election. The Intercept report said the information came to them anonymously and noted there is no evidence to suggest the hackers succeeded in compromising voting machines or tabulations. The Department of Justice has charged Reality Leigh Winner of Augusta, Georgia, under the Espionage Act for allegedly removing classified material from the facility where she worked and mailing it to a news outlet. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison. An Air Force veteran with a love of CrossFit, yoga and veganism, Winner’s online profiles display a disciplined and mannered lifestyle. After sharing some jokes about Winner’s unusual name, the world has been left wondering who Reality Winner is and what would motivate her to leak government secrets.
Winner is a 25-yearold NSA contractor who worked for Pluribus International Corp., a defense and intelligence contractor for the U.S. government, in Georgia, according to a DOJ criminal complaint filed Monday in U.S. District Court. She began working with Pluribus on Feb. 13 and has top-secret security clearance. Winner was raised in Kingsville, Texas, and she served in the Air Force in Maryland for four years. Winner is fluent in Pashto, Farsi and Dari and was a linguist in the Air Force. In high school, she excelled in academics, tennis and athletics, her mother Billie Winner-Davis told the Guardian. Winner has never been very politically active, Winner-Davis said. “She’s very passionate. 10 NEWS NJ PRIMARIES NJ voters to pick candidates for governor to succeed Christie New Jersey voters went to the polls on Tuesday to choose their parties’ nominees to succeed Gov. Chris Christie, a once-rising Republican star whose popularity has plummeted in recent years. Lieutenant Gov. Kim Guadagno leads a pack of five Republican candidates in Tuesday’s primary election, while Phil Murphy, a former Goldman Sachs Group Inc. executive who served as U.S. ambassador to Germany
under President Obama, is the front-runner among six Democrats. But the biggest challenge for candidates in either party may be drumming up enough interest to get voters to show up. New Jersey is one of only two states holding gubernatorial elections this year. A recent poll by Stockton University found that one-third of voters in both parties were undecided. “While we have a lot of candidates running, and quality candidates, it’s not the kind of
campaign that’s grabbed peoples’ attention,” said Sharon Schulman, executive director of Stockton’s Hughes Center for Public Policy, which conducted the poll. Schulman speculated that many voters are “burned out” after the 2016 U.S. presidential election, and noted that only 9 percent of Democrats and 18 percent of Republicans turned out in the 2013 primary. Scattered rain showers on Tuesday were unlikely to boost turnout in this year’s primaries. In the May 25 Stockton poll,
Guadagno led her strongest Republican rival, Assemblymen Jack Ciatterelli, 37 percent to 18 percent. Murphy led the Democratic pack with 34 percent, while former Clinton Administration Treasury Department official Jim Johnson had 10 percent. While Christie was re-elected with 60 percent of the vote in 2013, his recent approval rating dropped to 20 percent, following his frequent absences, the state’s 11 credit-rating downgrades and transportation problems. A weekend outburst outside of Helium Comedy Club in Center City has already cost former PHL17 reporter Colleen Campbell her job, and now it could cost the 28-year-old her freedom. Following a tirade outside of the comedy club, after she had been reportedly kicked out of a performance by Craig Robinson (of “The Office” and “Hot Tub Time Machine”), Campbell has been charged with resisting arrest, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct. A video of Campbell’s Sunday night rant has appeared on Facebook — Philadelphia Magazine shared it on Monday, noting that Campbell was kicked out of the club for being loud — in which she brags
about her job at the news station and hurls a string of insults and crude comments at a Philadelphia police officer while arguing that she had done nothing wrong. “That’s why nobody likes the police,” she can be heard to say to the officer, who maintains complete calm and poise throughout Campbell’s tantrum. “Because they’re all idiots in this f–ing town.” Campbell was reportedly fired from her onair job at PHL17 after the video surfaced. She has posted on Facebook — and she told Philadelphia Magazine — that she only had two drinks at Helium, doesn’t remember what the altercation was about and believes she may have been drugged. “I have never acted like this and asked to go to the hospital last night to find out if anything was slipped in my drink,” she wrote on social media. Campbell is currently out on bail, and she has a hearing set for June 13.

Accuser describes alleged Cosby sex assault: ‘I was frozen’ Cosby, best known for the ’80s TV comedy series “The Cosby Show, has denied all the allegations against him. The woman who accused Bill Cosby of the sexual assault that led to his criminal trial testified on Tuesday that she felt “frozen after taking three pills the entertainer gave her before the assault. Andrea Constand’s voice quivered as she began describing the 2004 incident at Cosby’s Philadelphiaarea home while Cosby,
“I said, ‘I trust you,’ and I swallowed the pills. Andrea Constand
79, at times shook his head. “In my head, I was trying to get my hands to move, my legs to move, but I was frozen, she said after describing how Cosby had spent months gaining her trust. “I wanted it to stop. Dozens of women have accused Cosby of sexual assaulting them, often after plying them with drugs, in a series of attacks dating to the 1960s. Every accusation but Constand’s is too old to be the subject of criminal prosecution, and the outcome of the trial in Norristown, Pennsylvania, hinges on whether jurors are persuaded by
her testimony. Constand said she first met Cosby in late 2002, when she was the newly hired director of basketball operations for Temple University’s women’s basketball program and he was the school’s most famous alumnus. After a series of phone calls, Constand said Cosby began inviting her dinner at his house and other events, such as a jazz concert in New York. “He was a Temple friend, somebody I trusted, a mentor and somewhat of an older figure to me, Constand testified. She said she had rebuffed his sexual advances before the 2004 assault. In January 2004, Constand said, Cosby invited her to his house again to discuss her career options. That night he offered her three blue pills, saying they were her “friends and would let her “relax. When she asked if they were herbal, he nodded, she said. “I said, ‘I trust you,’ and I swallowed the pills, she told jurors. She said that after he assaulted her, she felt humiliated. She returned the next evening and asked what the pills had been but did not get an answer. “I realized at that point he was never going to tell me what he gave me, she said. Constand said she continued to have contact with Cosby because she felt she had to discuss Temple as part of her job. REUTERS

We need to talk about Lee from “The Bachelorette Monday night’s episode of “The Bachelorette had its bright spots — looking at you, Hot Alex — and some rather dull ones — oh Fred, honey, no. But beyond all that, we need to talk about s—t-stirring Lee Garrett, who both appears to be this season’s villain, but also? The actual worst as far as real-life humans go. After stirring the pot with

George & Amal Clooney welcome twins, give them normal names George Clooney and his wife Amal welcomed twins early Tuesday morning, and I can’t. The couple released a statement, saying “This morning [we] welcomed Ella and Alexander Clooney into [our] lives. Ella and Alexander, you guys! Those are some classy names, if I do say so myself. The statement added that George is “sedated
and should recover in a few days. Damn, George. We get it. You’re preparing for the most rigorous role of your life: embarrassing father. But could you have let Amal have the spotlight for like, a second? The couple has been married since September 2014, when they celebrated their typically gorgeous star-studded nuptials in Venice. Em-
ily Blunt and Bono were there for some reason. Anyway, congratulations to the very attractive couple on what will surely be some very goodlooking babies!

Gwyneth Paltrow doesn’t know a dang thing about Goop
Looks like we’re all in the same boat.
Gwyneth Paltrow went on “Jimmy Kimmel Live to admit what we all kind of expected: She doesn’t know a dang thing about her lifestyle website, Goop. Despite claiming that the website is her full-time job, and that’s she’s in the office all day, every day, the 44-year-old doesn’t know much about the articles printed in the wellness section. When asked about earthing — yeah, your
guess is as good as mine — Paltrow basically gives a non-answer worthy of well, nothing. “I don’t actually know that much about earthing. ‌ They say that we lost touch with sort of being barefoot in the earth, and there’s some sort of electromagnetic thing that we’re missing.â€? There is a wet gleam of pure insanity in his eyes, and it’s pretty unpleasant to look at. But also? Last week some old tweets of Lee’s popped up, and turns out he’s even worse than you imagined. The posts, which have since been delet-

Famous people from Philly JENNIFER LOGUE @jenniferlogue
jennifer.logue@metro.us
Whether you know it or not, there are a lot of famous people from Philadelphia. Some represent Philly proudly (like Will Smith), while others are less vocal (but still very proud) of their Philly roots. Here is a running list of famous people — both living and dead — from the City of Brotherly Love. 1. Boyz II Men This legendary R&B group ruled the charts in the ’90s with hits like “Motown Philly, “On
Bended Knee,â€? “End of the Roadâ€? and more. Nathan Morris, Shawn Stockman and Wanya Morris are all Philly natives and attended the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA). They’re even getting a street named after them at the end of June called Boyz II Men Boulevard in Philly. 2. Tina Fey The acclaimed writer, comedian, actress and producer hails from Upper Darby — a suburb just outside of Philadelphia in Delaware County. Danny Huston on ‘Wonder Woman,’ comic books and ABBA The actor loves when popular art is subversive, including his new superhero movie.
“Knowing Me, Knowing You”
MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Danny Huston may not be a comic book nerd, but he gets it. He gets that the movies spawned from them — including “Wonder Woman,” in which he plays World War I German General Erich Ludendorff, one of the main villains — aren’t mere escapism. “It’s easy to dismiss them, but there’s a real truth in their essence,” Huston tells us. “You think they’re feelgood films for kids and teenagers, but actually the underlying message can be quite

dark in examining the human condition.” During our chat, the actor — a go-to character actor, seen in “Birth,” “The Constant Gardener,” “Robin Hood” and twice on “American Horror Story” — regularly compares comics to Greek mythology. Sure enough, the film wrestles with ideas as big as they come, namely war and peace. “The message is simple — one could even

think of it as being naive. But it’s absolutely truthful. It’s about how love conquers all,” Huston says. It makes sense for Huston to speak of “Wonder Woman” not as a comic book movie but in classical terms. After all, he’s Hollywood royalty. His father is John Huston, the legendary filmmaker of “The Maltese Falcon” and “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.” His half-

“Wonder Woman” manages to ferry plenty of feminist thought into the summer movie landscape. Huston loves stuff like that — the idea of popular art sneaking in brutally honest messages. Recently he found himself finding depth in, of all things, ABBA. “I resisted them my entire life. And you know what? It’s not that bad! It’s actually pretty damn good!” he says. He cites “Waterloo” as the song that turned him. “It’s this happy song about hundreds of soldiers dying on the battlefield. Once I stopped judging it at face value, suddenly it opened up a different meaning. “That’s what’s so clever about pop: You popularize something and, in actual fact, the message you’re giving can be actually quite subversive.”
sister is Anjelica Huston. His nephew, Jack, starred in last year’s redo of “BenHur.” Though his father is one of Classic Hollywood’s manliest men, Huston didn’t come up to think in macho terms. “I’m lucky to be surrounded by strong women,” he says. “My sister Anjelica has been an angel all my life. My mother, though she’s quite petite, is powerful and strong. As is my daughter.” That makes him an
ideal fit for “Wonder Woman,” the first big superhero movie since 2005’s “Electra” with a female superhero, as well as directed by a woman, “Monster’s” Patty Jenkins. He does point out, however, that women taking key roles in Hollywood is nothing new. “Since the birth of cinema, women have had great, powerful roles,” he remarks. “But it’s about time that a superhero film of this size celebrates a woman in this way.”

6Movies that are actually scary Here’s a bold statement: Most horror films aren’t scary. That doesn’t mean they’re not great. We only mean that, technically speaking, they’re not the dictionary definition of “scary.” Classic monster movies, slasher movies — they may provide a couple good jumps, some “boo!” moments, some iconic creatures. But they offer only momentary thrills. They don’t get at something deeper, don’t get at what’s really and truly scary. But some do. The excellent new “It Comes at Night,” out Friday, is one. Here’s six others we find scary — and they’re not all of them horror. MATT PRIGGE “Alien” (1979)
ANCHOR BAY
“Halloween” (1978 The movie that invented the slasher genre doesn’t have that many kills. In fact, we find it so much freakier before the grown-up Michael Myers starts picking off horndog teens with a butcher knife. It’s all about the first 45 minutes, which is nothing but Myers stalking his prey — following them around, spying on what they’re doing, hanging back but for who knows how long? Every time he doesn’t go in for the kill, we grow sicker and sicker with anticipation.
The first “Alien” is a slasher pic, too, and another one that greatly delays the murdering. The deaths are scary, too — the part where [spoiler] is murdered in the air ducts is one of the few totally successfully, non-cheap “boo!” scars in cinema. But what really gets under our skin is the idea underneath it: that humans are insignificant, that they can handily be wiped out by an alien species whose only motivation is murder. Then again, at this point, it will probably be us, not space monsters, who kill us all.
FOX
“The Fly” (1986)
WARNER BROS
“The Exorcist” (1973)
We aren’t Catholic, or even religious, but if we were, we’d totally think this was the scariest movie ever made. Imagine if all the fire and brimstone priests talked about was real. What if Satan existed and could possess a teenage girl (Linda Blair)? What if priests really would have to have a holy water-and-prayers showdown with the Dark Lord himself? We don’t believe in any of this stuff, and yet William Friedkin’s classic still freaks us the hell out.
There are vomit-y special effects aplenty in David Cronenberg’s radical reimagining of the Vincent Price classic, in which a man turns into a fly — except in Cronenberg’s version, the transformation is slow and devastating. In fact, the movie, released at the height of the AIDS crisis, plays a lot like watching someone you love gradually succumb to a terrible disease. That it happens to Jeff Goldblum at his most Goldblumiest makes it all the more wrenching.
FOX
“The War Game” (1965)
SHOUT FACTORY
“Audition” (1999) Imagine an Eric Rohmer film that turns into an Eli Roth gorefest. No, that’s not such a bad matchup — at least when Japanese extreme horror director Takashi Miike does it. In Miike’s most shocking film — even moreso than “Ichi the Killer,” which features scores of nasty business with blades — a sadsack middleaged widower overcomes his grief by tricking a nice, quiet, docile woman into loving him. It seems sweet. We don’t want to talk about what happens in the last half-hour; we’re still talking about it with our therapist.
This isn’t a horror film, except that it kind of is: It’s a fake documentary by the political filmmaker Peter Watkin, which imagines what would happen if England was subject to a nuclear attack. First, there’s the carnage, rendered in realistic detail. Just as scary, though, is how poorly the government would handle devastation so total — how unprepared they are, how many services would be tied up in bureaucratic red tape, how little hope there is for the survivors. Maybe now’s not the time to watch this.

According to Oshunbumi Fernandez, the Odunde Festival is not only the celebration of
the African diaspora in the Yoruba tradition, it is the largest outdoor African-American block party in the United States. Her mother, the great Lois Fernandez, established the Odunde Festival in 1975 with $100 donations from neighborhood friends and vendor participation. As it was then, the Odunde

says quietly. Further emphasis comes, however, when Fernandez stresses that Odunde is more than just the June 11 street festival, crammed with what she estimates is over 200,000 people in that single afternoon. Before that date, there are events such as Thursday, June 8’s story telling session at the Art Sanctuary; Friday, June 9’s African business roundtable with invited ambassadors from Ivory Coast and Cameroon at the Federal Reserve Bank on North Sixth Street; and yoga classes throughout the weekend, “Our business roundtable last year revealed that, in a 10hour period, Odunde made a $28 million economic impact on the city and a $30 million economic impact on the state — counting everything from tourists

Newcomers bring change to one of Philly’s tightest-knit communities. LILY WILLIAMS @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
Of all of Philadelphia’s up-and-coming neighborhoods, none has received more buzz recently than Point Breeze. It started in 2016 when RealtyTrac looked at “rough-and-tumble neighborhoods on the rebound” and Point Breeze came in at No. 5 in the nation. Then earlier this year, Zillow named Point Breeze Philly’s hottest housing market; Redfin ranked it third in the city. What’s driving the frenzy for the neighborhood extending from Broad to 25th and Wash-
ington to Mifflin, which many buyers gave a wide berth a few years ago? John Longacre, developer and owner of three neighborhood bar/ restaurants says it’s the increase in amenities. Longacre was drawn to Point Breeze more than 15 years ago. As an intern in Mayor Ed Rendell’s administration, he learned that “economic development is the engine that can rebuild a city.” Armed with a degree in economics from Temple University’s Fox School of Business, he began to look at the neighborhood from a sociological perspective. “It had great characteristics that should make it viable,” he says, “dense population, great housing stock, proximity to the central business district, multiple commercial corridors, and easy

access to multiple forms of public transportation and highway arteries. These are all macroeconomic characteristics most neighborhoods would kill to have and yet it was extraordinarily disinvested.” He wondered how it could have all that and still be so blighted, then realized what was missing: amenities. “Someone could build shiny new boxes all over the place,” he says “but to thrive, a neighborhood needs amenities.” Longacre saw an opportunity to help revitalize Point Breeze. With the idea that he would take over only derelict businesses and practice adaptive reuse and infill development so as not to displace

Burg’s harks back to 1970s cocktail lounges (there are even period game shows on the television). extends from Broad to 18th) and held real estate agent lunches every week at South Philly Tap Room to try to get agents to bring buyers to the neighborhood. Another factor in revitalizing the area has been a substantial increase in residential development, with vacant properties replaced with new townhouses which sell for upward of $450,000. Realtor James Price compares Point Breeze to Graduate Hospital five to 10 years ago. Like that neighborhood, it is easily accessible on foot, bike or public transit to Center City. Unlike Grad Hospital, however, what makes Point Breeze so attractive to first-time buyers, he
explains, is that houses are mostly priced at below the $424,500 cut-off for a conventional loan, meaning that buyers can put down as little as 5 percent. “For someone looking for starter house — especially a new house — near Center City, the only option is Point Breeze. You can buy a $350,000 home here with roughly $15,000 in cash.” Today, Longacre barely recognizes the neighborhood he helped transform. “When we opened South Philly Tap Room,” he recalls, “when we saw someone walking down our street, we knew they were a customer.” Now neighbors pack “clean, tree-lined streets which used to be littered with trash. Homeowners care about their houses and their neighborhood.”

Foles, Wentz QB bromance could go places In his second stint with the Eagles, Nick Foles has nothing but love for Philadelphia fans. EVAN MACY @evan_macy
evan.macy@metro.us
The evidence has shown that Carson Wentz is a cool guy. Like, really cool. When he’s not buying his entire offensive line Beretta shotguns, hunting with Mike Trout or making dreams come true for sick kids, he’s working toward becoming a great NFL quarterback. And while the 24-yearold NFL sophomore has a lot of work left to do before joining the upper echelon of gunslingers in pro football, he’s made a really good impression on Nick Foles, who once
threw for seven touchdowns in a game as the Eagles’ starter in an epic 2013 campaign. “As a quarterback and as an athlete he’s tremendous coming into year two,” Foles, the last quarterback to play in the playoffs as an Eagle, said Monday. “With the cerebral part of the game he understand the game, and as a person he’s a great individual to be around and I really enjoy it.” The two have lockers side by side in the front corner of the Eagles’ locker room, are both proudly religious and seem to have a lot in common both on and off the field. And the budding friendship is palpable. “I knew about the year he had when he was here,” Wentz said,
Carson Wentz’s backup is reliable and experienced Nick Foles, who will be a useful resource in the quarterbacks room this season.
referring to the 27-to-2 touchdown to interception ratio Foles posted four years ago. “It was an impressive year for sure. I’ve heard from a lot of guys in this building that he’s a great dude. The relationship we have had is great.” “Carson is a great guy, we are all in this together,” Foles said. “I told him, ‘You’re not
out there alone. I am out here trying to do anything to help this team.’ It’s a great atmosphere to be in. It’s not like that everywhere but it’s that way here.” Foles has been welltraveled since his last game with the Birds in 2014. He has appeared in games for the Rams and the Chiefs with mixed results. Given the op-
portunity to return to the team that drafted him was an opportunity Foles was unwilling to let go. During his tenure in Philly he learned a lot about the city and about playing in the NFL — memories he relishes. And as he told the media Monday, there is nothing better than turning the famous Philly boo-birds into cheerlead-

ers. “I love the boos because there’s nothing better than turning them into cheers,” Foles, who is expecting his first child any day now, said. “They’re great with opposing crowds. It’s a tough place to come play. When other teams hear the boos they probably think they got us, but we can turn it right around.”
Eagles’ Hollins in perfect situation for success When the Eagles selected North Carolina’s Mack Hollins in the fourth round of April’s NFL draft, the big 6-foot4 wide receiver couldn’t have imagined a better scenario to kick off his pro football career. With veterans Torrey Smith, Alshon Jeffery and Jordan Matthews ahead of him on the depth chart, Hollins is free to learn in a lowpressure environment. And with former Pro Bowl talent lining up on the same practice field as him every day at the NovaCare Complex, he is able to learn from the best. “In the experience sense, these guys have played for a combined 14 or 15 years probably,” Hollins told

members of the media Monday after a practice at OTAs, “and that’s stuff you can’t get from a wide receiver, even if he had 2,000-yard year
last season it helps that they’ve been here. And it’s the little things you learn that help you.” Hollins also is working with an up-and-

coming positions coach in former Bears wide receivers coach Mike Groh, who Jeffery calls a “great coach.” Both Groh and offensive
coordinator Frank Reich like what they see from their talented rookie. “Mack Hollins is kind of a build-the-speed guy with great length and tremendous ball skills,” Reich said. “That’s flashed already. He’s got tremendous ball skills. Very smart, very good feet for a big man. Very excited about his development.” Adding to the veteran personnel and coaching staff, Hollins’ locker is right next to another Eagles rookie wide receiver, Shelton Gibson. Together, the Eagles hope that, eventually, Hollins and Gibson can become the future at the position for the team — perhaps replacing Jeffery and Smith.
“It’s awesome,” Hollins said of sharing his rookie experience with Gibson. “We took a couple visits with different teams before and we never knew we’d end up in Philly together but it’s great to have him to lean on. We have fun together. When we struggle on plays we all laugh at each other. It’s nice to have someone else.” Most importantly, the duo gives Carson Wentz even more weaponry to work with as he prepares to take a step forward in 2017. “They look good,” Wentz said of the rookie wideouts. “They both can run, so I am excited to continue to build my relationship with those guys.” EVAN MACY

Philly’s McCall lives dream, works out for hometown Sixers The Carver High School alumnus got advice from Robert Covington before workout out in Camden on Monday. KYLE PHILLIPPI @Kyle_Phillippi sports@metro.us
Tahjere McCall learned last week that his first private workout in the NBA draft process would be with his hometown team, the Philadelphia 76ers. A Northeast Philly native who attended Carver High School of Enginering and Science, McCall was taken aback by the opportunity. “You should’ve seen my face when I got the
text,” McCall said. “To be in Philadelphia with my first workout, you can’t write it up.” The Tennessee State guard was one of six prospects at the Sixers training facility in Camden for a private workout. McCall didn’t have far to travel, either, having come back home to stay with his mom after the school year. When McCall first got the text from his agent, he had to call his mom — of course — before sending out a text to Robert Covington, who also attended the same college and currently starts for the 76ers. The Sixers’ defensive specialist gave him some advice. “Just play your game,” McCall said of
Covington’s advice. “If you go into something trying to impress people, you try to do something you’re not too comfortable doing … he said just be yourself and play your game and the rest will take care of itself.” McCall said he felt comfortable working out in front of the Sixers brass with notable names like Maryland’s Melo Trimble and Colorado’s Derrick White. The two-time Ohio Valley Conference defensive player of the year had a chance to show off his defensive prowess in the 3-on-3 games. “Talk about a kid who’s tough,” said Sixers VP of Player of Personnel Marc Eversley. “He brings toughness
Regardless of what happens next, Monday was a career milestone for Tahjere McCall.
to the court. He’s got to work on his offense a little bit and work on his jump shot. He’s a defender, I think that’s his elite skill.” As for his Philadelphia roots, McCall grew up being a hard-core 76ers fan because of Allen Iverson, “you could not not be a Sixers fan

[when he was around].” McCall doesn’t know of any future workouts with other teams yet, but if this was the only one he gets, so be it. He’s spent his whole life taking one opportunity — like having only one offer out of high school to later only having one school interested in him

when he transferred to Tennessee State from Niagara — and wouldn’t mind doing the same if the 76ers are the only interested party. He’d also have a good excuse to stay at home, where he says his mom’s cooking is well worth the stay for the ribs and fried chicken.

Josh Hart’s stellar play at Villanova didn’t go unnoticed on a national level, and it certainly didn’t go under the radar on the local scale. Philadelphia 76ers general manager Bryan Colangelo says the Villanova guard is an impressive prospect in the upcoming NBA draft. “We’ve seen a lot of Josh over the years you might say, Colangelo said. “He certainly has had a big impact on the Villanova program. He’s a talent. “He’s going to be a nice NBA player. Colangelo watched Hart during an agent-led workout last week. To no surprise, Hart continued

to impress. “He shot the ball well, Colangelo said. “He was very impressive, but it was a one-on-none workout, so we’re not going to get a lot out of that other than the fact that he had tremendous stamina throughout. I will say this, he didn’t have a lot of breaks in the course of the workout. As a senior, Hart averaged 18.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. He
received the Julius Erving Award as the nation’s top small forward and was a consensus first-team AllAmerican after earning the Big East Player of the Year. He is currently projected to go in the second round around picks No. 40 and No. 44. The 76ers own four second round picks (Nos. 36, 39, 46, 50). There’s certainly a chance that if Hart is on the board for any of those first three second-round picks, the Sixers could swoop in for the Wildcat. After all, Hart would fit in very well. Just look at this Villanova bio, which calls him a “extremely versatile and a “tough wing player. On Monday, Colangelo said the team wants to collect as many versatile players as it can. Hmm.

Libra Emotional energy correctly channeled can bring about positive gains. If you share your ideas, you will drum up acceptance from peers, friends and relatives.
Taurus Let your imagination run wild. Take a closer look at unusual ways to use your skills. Expand your ideas and be open to suggestions made by dierent people.
Scorpio Money matters, medical issues and contracts are best looked at carefully. Refuse to let an emotional situation cloud your vision and cause you to make a poor decision.
Gemini Delegate responsibilities to people you know can handle the job, while you stick to what you do best. The extra time will give you the chance to add your unique touch.
Sagittarius Keeping secrets can make you look bad. You are best o being up-front and honest about your feelings and plans. Don’t meddle, gossip or be misleading.
Cancer Your charm, intent and desire to get things done will help you talk others into assisting you. An unusual partnership will entice you to do things dierently.
Capricorn Working with your peers will bring good results. Taking a dierent approach to a job or putting more physical energy into what you do will pay o.

Aquarius Your disciplined approach to your actions and the way you help others will be enough to promote your assets. A vocational opportunity should be considered.
Virgo A conscientious attitude will encourage truth. Think about what you want to say before you blurt it out. Treat others fairly, but don’t let anyone take advantage of you.
Pisces An unusual opportunity will come from an unlikely source. Put your time and energy into making the changes that will serve what you want to achieve. EUGENIA LAST
