SOME TOAST COMEY TESTIMONY AT BARS

1

Crowds packed bars on Thursday to watch former FBI chief James Comey testify to Congress, with some patrons dismissing the hearing as hype and others cheering his comments as they downed mixed drinks with names like “impeachmint” and “bad hombre.” From Capitol Hill to San Francisco’s Castro district, television “watch parties” beckoned politics buffs to taverns, restaurants and living

rooms to view an event some likened to the “Super Bowl of Washington.” The drama around Comey’s first public appearance since he was fired by President Donald Trump last month drew the kind of communal public interest more often associated with major sporting events and awards shows. REUTERS

UK EXIT POLL SUGGESTS CONTRACTOR HEADS TO MAY WILL LOSE MAJORITY COURT ON LEAK CHARGES

2

Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservative Party will fail to win a parliamentary majority in Britain’s election, according to an exit poll, a shock result that would plunge domestic politics into turmoil and could delay Brexit talks. The exit poll predicted May’s party would not win a majority of the 650 seats in parliament to take office alone, meaning she would have to form a coalition or attempt

to govern with the backing of other smaller parties. The exit poll predicted the Conservatives would win 314 seats and the Labour Party 266, meaning no clear winner and a “hung parliament.” The exit poll sent shockwaves through financial markets. It was an extraordinary failure for May, who was enjoying opinion poll leads of 20 points and more when she called the snap election just seven weeks ago. REUTERS

The White House called for tough punishment of people who leak classified information, ahead of a detention hearing for an intelligence contractor charged with releasing a report on Russian election interference. An attorney for the 25-year-old contractor, Reality Leigh Winner, said she intends to plead not guilty, NBC News reported. She is the first person charged with leaking classified information to

the media under the administration of President Donald Trump. Trump, who has repeatedly vowed to crack down on leakers, believes anyone found guilty of unlawfully disclosing classified information should be punished to the fullest extent of the law, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said at a press briefing. HOUSE PASSES BILL TO REPLACE DODD-FRANK

5

The House of Representatives voted largely along party lines to replace the 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform law, a move that is expected to die in the Senate but open the door to revamping or eliminating regulations that came out of the 2007-09 financial crisis. The bill, called the CHOICE act, was approved by a vote of 233-to-186. Authored by House Financial Services Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling, a Republican, it gives

banks a choice between complying with Dodd-Frank or holding onto more capital. It also restructures the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, created under Dodd-Frank to guard individuals against fraud in lending. Democrats are fiercely opposed to restructuring the CFPB. The U.S. Senate is not expected to take up the bill in its entirety, even though it has the backing of President Trump, largely because of the threat that Democrats will use a filibuster to stall it. COVFEFES ALL AROUND! I’ve watched a lot of Congressional hearings in my life, and most are about as exciting as a dusty painting of the Founding Fathers contemplating a parchment. But I must doff my powdered wig to the Senate Intelligence Committee — because the testimony of fired FBI Director James Comey was riveting. Let’s go to the highlight reel! Comey thrilled Democratic stone-throwers by repeatedly calling the president of the United States a liar, and giving lurid details of a private meeting with the president in which “loyalty” kept coming up like the password to a creepy nightclub. Comey delighted conservative media outlets, however, by confirming the prez was not under investigation over the Russian election hack. He took swipes at Attorney General Jeff Sessions and former AG Loretta Lynch. He served up a surprise about how news of his notes got out — i.e. he leaked them! He let loose with an excellent colloquialism: “Lordy!” And he compared giving information to journalists to “feeding seagulls at the beach.” It was fantastic. Good enough, I imagine, to satisfy dozens here in D.C. who — I swear — went to bars for “watch parties.” And probably good enough to please many more observing the proceedings across the country. And why not? There was something in it for everyone. For those who want to see this president ripped from the Oval Office, impeached, and shipped back to New

York, there was enough confirmation of questionable behavior to keep their hopes alive. For those who want to see him exonerated: Even though much of the testimony made President Trump look bad, none of it seemed to have him in serious political or legal jeopardy at least for now. So what comes next? The Russian probe will go on and some of the president’s associates will continue to be scrutinized — perhaps some will be implicated in some sort of shenanigans. But the furor around the president himself in this matter may be a little muted now. Because as much as the Republican president’s opponents hoped Comey’s testimony would lay out a clear case for obstruction of justice, as California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein said, “Look, we’re not there yet.” Trump and the Kremlin, it will send a shock wave down Pennsylvania Avenue hard enough to rattle the White House china.

Comey says Trump fired him to undermine FBI Russia investigation

Former FBI Director James Comey testifies before the Senate Intelligence Committee. GETTY IMAGES

In a speech to supporters across town, President Trump vowed to fight on. Former FBI Director James Comey accused President Donald Trump on Thursday of firing him to try to undermine its investigation into possible collusion by his campaign team with Russia’s alleged efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election. In the most eagerly anticipated U.S. congressional hearing in years, Comey told lawmakers the Trump administration had lied and defamed him and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. During more than two hours of testimony, Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee he believed Trump had directed him in February to drop an FBI probe into the president’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn as part of the Russia investigation. Comey would not say whether he thought the president sought to obstruct justice, but added it would be up to special counsel Robert Mueller, who is now investigating the Russia allegations, “to sort that out.” Comey gave short, deliberative answers. He painted a picture of an overbearing president

whom he did not trust and who pressured him to stop the FBI Flynn probe. Trump critics say any efforts by the president to hinder an FBI probe could amount to obstruction of justice. Such an offense potentially could lead to Trump being impeached by Congress, although his fellow Republicans who control the Senate and House of Representatives have shown little appetite for such a move. Asked why he thought Trump fired him, Comey said he did not know for sure. He added, “Again, I take the president’s words. I know I was fired because of something about the way I was conducting the Russia investigation was in some way putting pressure on him, in some way irritating him, and he decided to fire me because of that.” Comey repeatedly said there were details he could not discuss in a public session, making clear he had sensitive information he could disclose only in a closed session with the senators. Comey said Trump’s administration had defamed him in comments made after his firing by saying that the FBI was in disarray and that the workforce had lost confidence in its leader. “Those were lies, plain and simple,” Comey said. His accusations could further mire Trump’s administration in legal

difficulties. Mueller and several congressional committees are investigating what U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded was an effort by Russia to help Trump win the election by discrediting Hillary Clinton. The White House has denied any collusion with Moscow. Trump vowed to continue fighting back against the allegations, telling supporters, “We’re under siege — but we will come out bigger and better and stronger than ever. … We know how to fight and we will never give up.” Comey said he did not know if there are tapes of his conversations with Trump but said if so they should be made public. “Lordy, I hope there are tapes,” Comey said. Republicans on the committee questioned Comey intently but did not attack his integrity or try to treat him roughly. Comey testified he kept notes after meeting with Trump because “I was honestly concerned that he might lie about the nature of our meeting, and so I thought it really important to document.” Comey’s appearance attracted television “watch parties” beckoning politics buffs to taverns, restaurants and living rooms to view an event some likened to the “Super Bowl of Washington.” REUTERS

LEGAL Prosecutors seek to use Cosby’s words against him at sex assault trial Prosecutors on Thursday sought to use Bill Cosby’s words against him at his sexual assault trial, showing interviews to jurors in which the comedian acknowledged giving his accuser pills before engaging in what he described as consensual “petting.” The introduction of Cosby’s own statements on the trial’s fourth day marked a new phase of the case after days of tes-

timony from two of his accusers. Cosby, 79, faces charges that he drugged and sexually assaulted Andrea Constand, a former employee of his alma mater Temple University, at his Philadelphia-area home in 2004. The married star of the 1980s hit television family comedy “The Cosby Show” has faced similar allegations from dozens of women. He has denied all of the claims. Only Constand’s accusation has resulted in criminal charges

because the other alleged incidents are too old to prosecute. In a sworn deposition taken during Constand’s 2005 civil lawsuit, which was later settled for an undisclosed sum, Cosby described an earlier encounter with Constand, when he began touching her midriff. “Without talking, I’m asking if I can go farther,” he said. “I don’t hear her say anything, and I don’t feel her say anything, and so I continue and I go into the area that is somewhere be-

tween permission and rejection. I am not stopped.” The deposition’s unsealing in 2015 by a federal judge prompted prosecutors to reopen the case and bring charges later that year. Cosby also said he gave Constand 1 ½ Benadryl pills on the night of the alleged assault after she said she was tense and sleep-deprived. “I have three friends for you to make you relax,” he said he told her.

The passage came the day after the bill’s sponsor released a report detailing the alarming rise in subway sex crimes. The day after state Sen. Diane Savino released a report showing the shocking rise in sexual assault on New York City subways, the state Senate passed her bill to strengthen penalties on subway predators in a 57-to-5 vote. Reported subway sex crimes rose more than 51 percent between 2014 and 2016, according to “Perverted Justice: How Subway Grinders Continue to Victimize New Yorkers,” the report Savino released Tuesday. Broken down, subway sex crimes jumped from 620 in 2014 to 738 in 2015 to 941 last year. Comparatively, there have already been 434 reported subway sex crimes between Jan. 1 and May 28 of this year, a 9 percent increase over the same period last year. The sex crimes Savino’s study highlighted include public lewdness, sexual abuse and forcible touching like “grinding,” which refers to when a predator rubs

themselves up against a victim, often on a crowded train. Forcible touching on public transportation currently carries a misdemeanor penalty of one year in prison, though most suspects serve little to no time. Under Savino’s bill, the crime would become a class-D felony carrying a prison sentence of one to seven years. Her legislation would also increase imprisonment for public lewdness on transportation from three months to one year. “We need to stop subway grinders in their tracks, and increasing penalties is a major deterrent to this abhorrent behavior,” said Savino, who represents Brooklyn and Staten Island. “Subway grinding and lewdness are serious crimes that threaten and humiliate victims who are simply trying to get to school, work or home. My legislation treats these crimes seriously, and I hope we can finally make this law.” The bill, S3861, failed to pass three previous times it was proposed. It has now been sent to the state Assembly, where it must pass before it is sent to Gov. Andrew Cuomo. NIKKI M. MASCALI

Applications open for NY’s free college plan There’s good news for New York students attending or heading off to a CUNY or SUNY school this fall: Applications for the Excelsior Scholarship, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s plan to offer free college tuition to eligible families, are officially open. Signed into law by Cuomo in April, the program began taking applications Wednesday for tuition-free educations for individuals who earn less than $100,000 annually, or who are in families that make less than that amount. The amount will change to $125,000 in 2019. Applications close on Friday, July 21. The maximum Excelsior Scholarship, $5,500, will decrease depending on other financial aid an applicant receives for an academic year, including a state Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) and/or a Pell grant. “With the launch of the first-in-the-nation Excelsior Scholarship program, the dream of a college education and a better life is now within reach for all New Yorkers,” Cuomo said in a statement Wednesday. “A college degree has become a necessity to succeed in the modern economy, and this program is the ticket to greater opportunity and will help build the stronger, smarter workforce New York needs to compete in the global economy.” What are New York’s Excelsior Scholarship requirements? There are certain requirements potential students need to meet in order to be eligible for the Excelsior Scholarship program. They must: • Be a New York state resident for 12 consecutive months prior to the start of the term. • Be a citizen of the U.S. or an eligible noncitizen. • Have graduated from and received a diploma from a U.S. high school or passed a federally approved “Ability to Benefit” test designated by the commissioner of the state education department. • Earn a combined gross

income of $100,000 or less. • Pursue a degree from a two-year or four-year SUNY or CUNY school, which includes community colleges and statutory schools at Cornell and Alfred universities. • Enroll in at least 12 credits per term and complete at least 30 successive credits each year toward their degree program. • Have obtained at least 30 successive credits each year toward their degree if they attended college before the 2017-2018 academic year. • Have a nondefault status on a state or federal student loan or the repayment of a state award. • Comply with terms of a previously received state award. • Agree via contract to remain in New York for the length of time of the award they received. How to apply for New York’s Excelsior Scholarship To apply for the Excelsior Scholarship, applicants will need: • Copies of their 2015 New York state income tax returns, or those of their parents or spouse. • A current unofficial college transcript showing credits earned each year before applying if they previously attended college. • The Student Aid Report (SAR) they received when filing the completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students need to complete the FAFSA or TAP applications, if needed, and the application for the Excelsior Scholarship at hesc.ny.gov/excelsior. Applications close Friday, July 21. NIKKI M. MASCALI

NEW YORK CITY Two charged with providing material support to Hezbollah Two men have been arrested and charged by U.S. prosecutors with scouting potential targets and providing material support to the Lebanese group Hezbollah, which has been designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. Ali Kourani, 32, of New York City and Samer El Debek, 27, of Dearborn, Michigan, were arrested on June 1, federal prosecutors in Manhattan announced Thursday. Both have appeared in

Manhattan federal court, according to prosecutors. Lawyers for Al Kourani and El Debek could not immediately be reached for comment. In a criminal complaint unsealed Thursday, prosecutors said Kourani attended Hezbollahsponsored weapons training in Lebanon as a teenager in 2000 before lawfully coming to the United States in 2003. He became a U.S. citizen in 2009, going on to earn a bachelor’s and a master’s degree, the

complaint said. Prosecutors said Kourani worked for Hezbollah while in the United States, identifying potential weapon suppliers; identifying people affiliated with the military of Israel, Hezbollah’s adversary; and gathering information about U.S. airport security and about military and law enforcement facilities in New York City. In a separate criminal complaint, prosecutors said El Debek, a U.S. citizen, was recruited by

Hezbollah in 2007 or 2008 and began taking a salary from the organization. Over the years, prosecutors said, El Debek received weapons training, including in bombmaking. They said he carried out missions for Hezbollah in Thailand to clean up materials used to make explosives that had been left behind in a house, and in Panama, where he gathered information about security and the Panama Canal and Israeli Embassy. Transit Museum plans 100th birthday bash for vintage NYC subway cars The city’s former Lo-V trains will be honored at the museum’s fourth annual Party on Wheels this weekend. The age of the transit system and its subway cars is often a bone of contention for many New Yorkers, especially as mass delays and mechanical issues have beset it in recent weeks. But come Sunday, that old age will be something to celebrate. The New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn is breaking out the cake and cards to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Lo-V subway cars, which ran on the IRT line from 1917 to 1969. The IRT, or Interborough Rapid Transit

Company, was the city’s first subway line, which opened in 1904, and featured what are today’s numbered trains. “The Lo-Vs were the second-generation subway trains,” museum educator Polly Desjarlais said when Metro visited last week. “LoV means ‘low-voltage,’ which means that what moves the train, the propulsion controls, is moved by batteries rather than 600-volt circuit.” The museum works with a dedicated crew from the MTA to run its vintage trains. “One told me his favorite thing about the Lo-Vs is their efficiency of space. This space,” Desjarlais said, gesturing as she stood in an alcove of one of the four cars that will run Sunday, “expands to be a driver’s booth with controls. When a cab is

not being used, it’s not wasted space. You can fit a few people here. This is super-ingenious.” The Lo-V’s’ efficiency influenced the subway cars that came after,

with the addition of bench seating and a center door for faster loading and unloading. That process should get even easier with the trains slated to join the MTA’s

fleet later this year, as they’ll have enlarged doors, Desjarlais said. “I find it comforting to know that 100 years ago, people figured out this is the best way to get the most people on a train,” said Concetta Bencivenga, the museum’s director. Other amenities on the Lo-Vs included paddle fans, ceiling air vents and specially made incandescent lightbulbs, which screwed in the opposite way of a normal bulb to deter thieves. This is the first time the Lo-Vs will run as part of the museum’s annual Party on Wheels, a family-friendly fundraiser that takes place on Sunday, June 11, and will feature Lo-V shuttle rides from the museum, which is housed in a subway station, built

in 1936, to the HoytSchermerhorn station. Party on Wheels is the only time of year that the Transit Museum’s trains leave its station, and the Lo-Vs will run every 10 minutes. Face-painting, crafts, dancing, conductor cab photos and more are also planned. The event is a fundraiser to benefit the museum’s education programs, which serves roughly 25,000 city students and teachers annually. “You don’t have to be at all interested in trains and buses and transit to still really love and get a kick out of this place,” Bencivenga said. The New York Transit Museum’s Party on Wheels is Sunday, June 11, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Visit Nytransitmuseum.org/ partyonwheels for details. NIKKI M. MASCALI

NYC family doctor busted for writing 14,000 bogus painkiller prescriptions A self-described “good old-fashioned family doctor was busted this week for writing thousands of illegitimate opioid prescriptions out of his Central Park office. Dr. Martin Tesher, 81, wrote more than 14,000 prescriptions — amounting to more than 2.2 million pills — for painkillers like oxycodone between June 2012 and January 2017, a “disproportionately high amount for a family practitioner, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York said. Learning is part of summer fun Meet a president and a recluse, and the hidden world inside you at this summer’s museum exhibits. LINDA LABAN “This Ever New Self ” As many of us contemplate a more simple life — whether to escape from our hyperconnected world or for fear the apocalypse really is coming — there’s renewed interest in the great naturalist, transcendentalist and author Henry David Thoreau. While his books “Walden” and “Civil Disobedience” are well-thumbed, this exhibit takes a look at the man himself through the lifelong journal he kept. Marking the 200th anniversary of his birth, “This Ever New Self” includes more than 100 personal items in the most comprehensive exhibition devoted to Thoreau. June 2-Sept. 10, The Morgan Library & Museum, 225 Madison Ave., themorgan.org

“Inside You” Forget about the bacteria on your hands — there are trillions more living in your gut, and the American Museum of Natural History wants to introduce you to them. Explore the world of beneficial microbes that call you home, from their vital role in your daily life to the many health issues we succumb to when they’re out of balance. This exhibit will take you inside your digestive tract, introduce you to the bacteria, viruses, fungi and other organisms whose DNA is 100 times more complex than our own, and keep you updated on the latest in the rapidly changing microbiome field. June 24-June 16, 2019, Central Park West at 79th Street, amnh.org

“Drones: Is the Sky the Limit?”

“Contemporary Meets Colonial”

Views on drones are complicated, whether you’re on the side of those who consider them a controversial military tool or, at best, a privacy nuisance. The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum offers another perspective by looking at the history of drone technology (all the way back in the Civil War!) and how it’s helping to save lives in Africa today. This all-ages exhibit will appeal to adults with deeper questions and kids who just want to see some cool tech, including drone-made videos and Lady Gaga’s “flying dress” Volantis. There’s even a glimpse of those flying cars we’ve been promised for decades. Through Dec. 3, Pier 86 on 12th Avenue at 46th Street, intrepidmuseum.org

Manhattan’s oldest house is using its Revolutionary War-era rooms and halls (everyone’s problematic fave Aaron Burr once lived there) as an immersive exhibit that elevates ordinary home life into the realm of art. Once the house of New York’s prominent Jumel family — known for their tableware — the home’s mantels and tables are getting a makeover by artists who’ve reimagined ordinary household objects like drinking glasses, bowls, candlesticks, jewelry and ceramics with a modern twist. June 8-Sept. 25, The MorrisJumel Mansion, 65 Jumel Terrace, morrisjumel.org

“The World Is Sound” What sound does an artwork make? The Rubin Museum of Art is all about linking the senses to get a deeper experience of our world. Their new site-specific installations pair sounds like its recent crowdsourced OM Project and ritual music from monasteries in Nepal and India with works from the museum’s Tibetan Buddhist art collection for

Appropriately located in what used to be one of NYC’s main transit hubs, “Millions” explores the differences in their journeys via artifacts culled from the South Street Seaport Museum’s permanent collection, from ocean-liner memorabilia to personal effects, as well as models of historical ships. “Millions: Migrants and Millionaires Aboard the Great Liners, 1900-1914” Experience the difference between the wealthy Americans taking European vacations in first class and the 13 million tired, huddled masses coming to American shores in crowded steerage “third class” aboard the same ocean liners in the early

No single politician was photographed more than John F. Kennedy. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of his birth in Brookline, Massachusetts, “American Visionary” presents 77 images that capture the former president’s short but dramatic life. Compiled from the Kennedy family’s archives, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and many more contributors, these rarely seen images present a life that began and ended in the spotlight, from birth to soldier to president. SUMMER ARTS GUIDE

From left, Michael Moore, Olivia Wilde, Janeane Garofalo and Lili Taylor are coming to Broadway this season. GETTY IMAGES

Summer theater

Summer is a whole new season on New York’s theater scene, too — a little odder, more experimental, a chance to see what will resonate with audiences after the Tonys frenzy cools down. We’ve got the musicals, plays and even a new immersive theater piece to put on your agenda on- and offBroadway in the coming months.

“1984” This play enjoyed four successful runs in the U.K., but are Americans ready for dystopian fiction about a totalitarian government, endless world wars and the spying eyes of Big Brother? Broadway’s been striving to be more topical, but George Orwell’s best-selling novel “1984” hits a bit too close to home right now. Coming to Broadway’s newest house, the Hudson Theatre, the production stars Tony nominee Tom Sturridge (“Orphans”), Olivia Wilde (in her Broadway debut) and Reed Birney (“The Humans”). Opens June 22, revisedtruth.com

“Ghost Light” In theater parlance, a “ghost light” is the lone lamp left on when the stage is completely dark. This “Ghost Light” production takes the audience behind the scenes of a play to learn about what might be going on in those shadows. Intrigued? It’s brought to Lincoln Center Theater by Third Rail Projects, the creators of the alsoimmersive “Then She Fell,” Brooklyn’s “Alice in Wonderland”-inspired show. Audiences will explore the haunting backstage of the Claire Tow Theater amid smoke and mirrors and music and stage magic. Opening June 19, lct.org

“Marvin’s Room” You may know “Marvin’s Room” as the 1997 movie starring Meryl Streep, Diane Keaton and a young Leonardo DiCaprio, but the film was originally adapted from a play by Scott McPherson. For the first time this summer, the stirring play makes its way to Broadway starring Janeane Garofalo and Lili Taylor. The tone rises above its gloomy material, wringing irresistible laughter out of the tale of a broken family that reunites when a woman in need of a bone marrow transplant returns home. Opens June 29, roundabouttheatre.org

It’s an exciting season in the conventional kind of theater, too, as productions that take bigger risks get some stage time. T. MICHELLE MURPHY

“A Parallelogram” What if you could see the future? Great! What if you could see your own future, but you couldn’t do anything to change it? That’s less great, but it does sound like a provocative piece of theater. “A Parallelogram” is about a girl with such powers named Bee, who has a remote control that lets her see any moment of her past and future; but no matter what she knows, she can’t affect any outcomes. Wrestling with this curse, Bee has to decide whether she wants to keep living at all. But, hey, it’s a comedy! Dark and existential, sure, but a comedy nonetheless. Opens Aug. 2, 2st.com “The Terms of My Surrender” Documentarian and social critic Michael Moore hits Broadway for the first time with a solo show lampooning our current president. “The Terms of My Surrender” questions how we got into today’s political nightmare by walking audiences back through American history, then prompting them to question what they can do now. Most importantly, it gives us the chance to laugh while processing some difficult truths — as explained by a man who notoriously refuses to back down from them, for better or worse. Opens Aug. 10, michaelmooreonbroadway.com

THE MET

This summer’s notable art exhibits revisit our pop culture loves and worry about where our nation is headed. JOSHUA AUSTIN

“Grand Ole Opera” Red Hook’s nonprofit art hub Pioneer Works will honor the legacy of country music star Bob Wills, who scandalized audiences at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry by performing on a drum kit (which, for 1945, was considered appalling). The exhibit of vintage Americana from the South makes space for a stage at its heart, where musical acts like Angel Deradoorian, Lighting Bolt, Sleep and others will perform their own (possibly also shocking) works as part of “Grand Ole Opera.” June 9-July 30, 159 Pioneer St., Brooklyn

“Eloise at the Museum” When you get to the “room on the tippy-top floor” of New York’s Plaza Hotel, you’ll meet the lovable, mischievous Eloise, along with her dog, Weenie, and turtle, Skipperdee. The New-York Historical Society is bringing back a childhood classic this summer with an indepth look at the bubbly book series “Eloise” with original manuscripts, portraits, sketches, photos, merchandise and more to come from creators Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight. June 30-Oct. 9, 170 Central Park West

Frederic Remington Go West! Well, artistically speaking. The Met’s retrospective on Frederic Remington, the incomparable artist who captured life on the American frontier, features more than 20 paintings, sculptures, illustrated books and drawings that will transport you back to the era of cowboys. Capturing the ideals of exploration, adventure and western landscape, Remington has helped create and chronicle the archetype of the unexplored West immortalized in many Clint Eastwood films. July 3-Jan. 8, 2018, 1000 Fifth Ave.

Paul Ramirez Bunny Rogers Jonas: “Half-truths”

“The Jim Henson Exhibition”

In a world of identity, how does our government define us versus who we really are? As part of Paul Ramirez Jonas’ exhibit at the New Museum, “Half-truths,” he will take part in an interactive installation called “Fake ID.” Participants are invited to empty their pockets; their contents, from credit cards to driver’s licenses, will be used by the artist to “design” a new you. Ramirez’s exhibition asks us to examine ourselves, our surroundings and to consider what is true. July 5-Sept.17, 235 Bowery

Get up close with Miss Piggy, Kermit and many more puppets brought to life by Jim Henson at the Museum of the Moving Image’s new permanent exhibit. The nearly 300 artifacts span the decades of Henson’s innovative and inspired career, from essential children’s fare like “The Muppet Show” to the David Bowie cult classic “Labyrinth.” In addition to 47 puppets, the exhibit includes character sketches, scripts, costumes and clips — and an interactive experience that turns you into a puppeteer. Opening July 22, 36-01 35th Ave., Queens

The young artist — she’s just 27 — whose work is constantly breaking digital boundaries, relying as much on the online world as real life, has made it to the Whitney Museum. She’ll continue her exploration of universal themes of loneliness, acceptance, sense of belonging and loss through a totally new exhibit that melds beloved fictional stories and cherished cartoons with real-life horrors like the Columbine High School massacre through videos, sculptures and installations. Movies under the stars

Films alfresco are a summer tradition, and there are a few places around the city so spectacular that they (almost) overshadow the featured presentation. LINDA LABAN

The Old American Can Factory Everyone’s #summergoals includes doing as many things as possible on a roof. Combine that with a warehouse party at this classic Rooftop Films venue, one of the last vestiges of Gowanus’ industrial era. Movies are screened on the large, flat roof, with live music instead of previews before the movie. After the flick, head downstairs to the after-party on the ground

floor, often with free drinks. Tickets: $15, movies at 8 p.m. Where: 232 Third St., Brooklyn Don’t miss: “The Strange Ones” (July 14) — Another rite of summer is road trips, though this one is anything but convertibles and roadside attractions. Stick around for a postfilm Q&A with the filmmakers.

Azul at Hotel Hugo Dinner and an outdoor movie doesn’t have to involve sitting on the ground and bringing your own picnic. This year, SoHo’s Hotel Hugo debuts a summerlong free movie series by Rooftop Cinema Club at its Cuban-inspired rooftop bar. Azul on the Rooftop takes place every Monday night at sunset, with a rain date of Tues-

day. Doesn’t a mojito and a movie sound like the perfect summer night? Where: 525 Greenwich St. Tickets: Free (drinks and food available for purchase) Don’t miss: “Sideways” (Sept. 18) — “Pride and Prejudice” in California wine country, centering on an oenophile (Paul Giamatti) who finds beauty in a bottle of wine and tends to overthink everything else. Intrepid Museum The decommissioned aircraft carrier docked on the Hudson River has to be New York City’s most unique outdoor cinema, screening films on its flight deck. Members get first dibs on reservations to the roster of classic American films, introduced by special guests.

Brooklyn Bridge Park certainly does offer a stunning view with its movies.

Tickets: Free, movies at sunset, RSVP advised Where: Pier 86, West 46th Street at 12th Avenue Don’t miss: “Anchorman” (July 18, 7 p.m.) — You know every ridiculous phrase that Ron Burgundy utters, but watching Will Ferrell be the most handsome idiot in California never gets old.

Flicks on the Beach On Monday evenings through July and August, enjoy the Coney Island Boardwalk and carnival away from weekend crowds, then stick around for a movie on the beach projected onto a 40-foot inflatable screen. Tickets: Free, movies at 8 p.m. Where: 1001 Boardwalk West and West 10th

Street, Coney Island Don’t miss: The 17th annual Coney Island Film Festival (Sept. 8-10) includes features and shorts, some with a local Brooklyn theme. The William Vale Williamsburg’s hottest hotel is throwing not one but two film series this summer. Downstairs, a drive-in theater will pop

Where: 111 N. 12th St. Brooklyn Tickets: Prices vary (drinks and food available for purchase) Don’t miss: “The Incredible Jessica James” (July 25, $15) — There’s not

enough Jessica Williams in our lives. Fix that at this new Netflix indie about a classic New York struggle: being a starving artist, in her case a playwright. “The Daily Show” correspondent is also tackling a breakup in the film, though it’s not long before Irish comic genius Chris O’Dowd (“Bridesmaids”) comes along to lift her spirits. Brooklyn Bridge Park End your Thursday evenings in July and August with Syfy Movies with a View, which as promised offers some of the best Lower Manhattan vistas

with your screening of the biggest recent hits as well as popular classics. Get there early — last year’s shows drew 7,000 attendees at each screening. Tickets: Free, movies at 6 p.m. Where: Harbor View Lawn Don’t Miss: “Mad Max: Fury Road” (Aug. 17) — Fight the apocalyptic patriarchy with Charlize Theron once again, because this is the movie that really kickstarted the feminist action genre that gave us the instant classic “Wonder Woman.”

THE FUN STARTS HERE Tom Cruise tries to fight evil in the new reboot of “The Mummy.” CHIABELLA JAMES

wknd

Tom Cruise does the monster mash The icon wants to bring back some old freaky creatures with “The Mummy.” LUCIA HERNANDEZ MWN letters@metro.us

Tom Cruise really, really loves movies. They’ve made him a very rich man. But for him, it’s about far more than money. In interviews and in his films themselves, you can always sense his boyish enthusiasm, his need to entertain no matter what. Time and time again, he’s nearly killed himself to wow us. In “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol,” he hung off the Burj Khalifa in Dubai — the world’s tallest build-

ing. In the series’ next film, “Rogue Nation,” he jumped onto a plane as it was taking off. For “The Mummy,” Cruise “only” spent two days in a “vomit comet.” That is, he filmed a key scene in a plane that nose-dived from the sky, creating zero gravity. But equally important to Cruise was that his new film brought back an old genre: the monster movie. “The Mummy” is the first in a new franchise called the “Dark Universe,” which will revive Universal’s classic creatures, including Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, etc. Even after some 35 years in the business, Cruise, 54, is far from jaded. He still just wants to entertain.

the chance to dress up. [Laughs]

We talked to Cruise as he was doing international press for his latest blockbuster, trotting the globe to talk to journalists and fans alike. It is amazing the way you interact with all of your fans on red carpets. Listen, I came up with this idea of doing premieres in different countries, because I wanted to have that time to celebrate movies. I am a film fan first and foremost, so I love that kind of engagement. It makes the job fun. And it gives me

You’ve done a lot of action movies. What’s special about “The Mummy”? “The Mummy” is totally different. First of all, it’s a monster movie — the kind of movies that established Universal Pictures as a viable film company. So when they came to me and asked if I wanted to be part of this “Dark Universe,” be the one who launched the first movie of this new universe, I felt it was a good opportunity to help define the genre of monster movies for a new audience. I love monster movies. I saw the original ones in black-

and-white on television when I was a kid — the ones that were made in the ’30s. Why do you love movies so much? They just inspire me. I’ve watched movies since I was a kid. Since I was 4 years old, I dreamt of making movies about the places where I grew up. I want to travel the world, but not just as a tourist. I want to learn. I love history and I want to be part of the culture. Movies allow me to see a different way of life, different cultures. It’s a language that transcends all barriers, everything. I love it. So, it’s the love of your life? Yes, it is.

RACHAEL VAUGHAN CLEMMONS @MetroNewYork

The kind-of-lovable jailbirds are back! Netflix is blessing us with a fifth season of “Orange is the New Black, premiering Friday, June 9. And this season won’t be shy about broaching some heavy stuff. We left the ladies at one of the most intense and pivotal moments at Litchfield. Poussey (Samira Wiley), is tragically killed during a prison protest, in a move that mirrors the Black Lives Matter movement — particularly the tragic killing of Eric Garner — and causing all hell to break loose. At the center of it all is Brook Soso, Litchfield’s resident millennial, and Poussey’s big love. We caught up with Kimiko Glenn, who plays

the now-grieving and heartbroken inmate, about her theaterkid beginnings, saying goodbye to Poussey, and the struggles of being an AsianAmerican actress in Hollywood.

What was it like to say goodbye to Samira

Wiley? It was a huge loss. Everyone loves her. I felt like there was a real death happening! Samira was the heart of the show in a way. There was a huge 21hour day where — we were in the cafeteria scene where she dies — we kind of said goodbye to her. It was almost like a funeral. “Orange is the New Black paralleled Black Lives Matter last year. Why do you think it’s important for television to pay tribute to what’s going on politically in the real world? The entertainment industry has a huge responsibility in shap-

ing how society thinks. I know by watching media it shapes how I think. We tell stories, but I think the reason we’re able to get deeper into people is because you start to care about the characters, you start to contextualize. And you realize that people are people and you can’t just put them in certain categories or groups. You’ve done “Spring Awakening and

“Waitress. Were you a theater kid? I started out as a theater kid, through and through. I never even had the thought, “Oh I’m going to be an actor in television or film. I’ve had four years on “Orange and I really love the medium of television. There are endless possibilities. From an artistic expression standpoint, I love singing on stage, and that makes me feel whole and ex-

In the past, you’ve talked a bit about being typecast — your mom is Japanese and your father has German, Scottish and Irish heritage. What struggles have you faced as an AsianAmerican actress? Every turn is stressful. There were so many times I didn’t get cast when I was younger, because they wanted a blonde or something. It was heartbreaking as a kid to hear that — because it’s like, ‘Wow, this is something I can’t control at all!’ I feel like I deserve things, I feel like I’m working my butt off and I’m talented. But at the end of the day, people see you as they see you. That’s been a constant struggle. What’s next for you? I’m actually starting to write more. My creative juices are flowing. There are also so many stories to be told that don’t need to be through a white lens. I don’t see it often enough and when [I] do I’m almost taken aback by it. That type of storytelling to me is most interesting.

18 WKND “It Comes at Night

Tom Cruise (with Annabella Wallis) tries his best to save “The Mummy. CHIABELLA JAMES

“The Mummyâ€? Tom Cruise is too good for “The Mummy.â€? The new reboot is a depressing watch, and not only because it’s an awkward, misshapen mess. It’s also because it ďŹ nds the last classic movie star giving up and giving in. It ďŹ nds him throwing up his hands and acknowledging the grim truth: that audiences today don’t pay to see actors; they see franchises, brands. And so “The Mummyâ€? isn’t really the new Tom Cruise movie; it’s the latest newfangled franchise starter, meant to launch movies’ latest Cinematic Universe: a line of ďŹ lms dedicated to old movie monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, etc. It’s a great idea — in theory. In practice, its maiden entry is a drunken stumble out of the gate — entertaining only because Cruise is, still, one hell of a movie star.

Cruise plays Nick Morton, a soldier-turned-treasure hunter who accidentally awakens an evil mummy (SoďŹ a Boutella). You can spend “The Mummyâ€? ticking o a mental checklist of blockbuster annoyances. Poor storytelling, check. City destruction, check. Crudely introduced characters who will get their own solo movie, check. Jake Johnson, check. Still, if it’s not much of a Tom Cruise movie, it’s still a fascinating movie about Tom Cruise. It’s one of those times, like “Eyes Wide Shut,â€? “Vanilla Skyâ€? and “Edge of Tomorrow,â€? when he’s in self-eacing-jerk mode. Cruise is at his best when playing against his rock star image, and when he’s onscreen, you can almost forget that this is an incoherent, joyless shambles. But it’s sad that a movie god like him is little more than the best part of a movie that, like a lot of today’s blockbusters, is just a bunch of stu and things. MATT PRIGGE

There are two kinds of scary movies. There are horror ďŹ lms, of course. But let’s be frank: Isn’t the real world more frightening than some ďŹ ctional boogeyman? In our book, cheap “boo!â€? frights have nothing on movies that prey on actual fears — documentaries that argue the world is going to end soon, morbid dramas (usually by Ingmar Bergman) about how each of us will one day die. “It Comes at Nightâ€? is both kinds of scary. You go see it to jump in your seat; you wind up with something far freakier: you get to watch what it’s like to live when life is no longer worth living. The setting is a remote cabin in the woods, in which two families — played by Joel Edgerton, Riley Keough, Christopher Abbott, etc. — hunkered down, rarely leaving

without gas masks. Sadly, they’re not paranoid: Some contagion has apparently laid waste to anyone who hasn’t turned into a Texas survivalist wacko. They’re just trying to survive. But remember: people can be idiots. It’s almost cruel what director Trey Edward Shults does to the audience: He directs “Nightâ€? as though it were a straight-up horror movie. His camera is always on the move — always creeping and crawling through darkened rooms. He’d direct the hell out of a “Conjuringâ€? entry. But the sickening tension won’t be paid o by anything so comforting as scary ghosts. Instead we’re stuck in the real world, with painfully real people, with all their neuroses and rash, foolish decisions. The eects of a typical horror ďŹ lm disappear before you’re out the theater door; “It Comes at Nightâ€? lingers for days. It is, in fact, truly scary. MP

Kelvin Harrison Jr. plays one of fewer than 10 actors in the minimalist sorta-horror ďŹ lm “It Comes at Night.â€? ERIC MCNATT, A24

Kate Mara makes a new friend, a combat dog named Rex, in “Megan Leavey. JACOB YAKOB / BLEECKER STREET

“Megan Leaveyâ€? “Megan Leaveyâ€? is a feel-good, inspirational weepie for snobs. Anything that might oend those allergic to the corny, the simplistic, even the patriotic has been surgically removed. Ron Howard would have had a ďŹ eld day with it: It’s based on a true story. It has a loner seeking redemption. It has a cute dog. Instead it’s been calmly helmed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, of the activist doc “BlackďŹ sh.â€? And it stars Kate Mara, an actress who loves playing characters who don’t like to be liked. Mara plays Megan, a gonowhere upstate New Yorker with a bad attitude who whimsically signs up for the Marines. Basic training doesn’t chill her out — until she meets Rex, a German shepherd trained to sni for guns and IEDs. She becomes his handler, heading over to Iraq so the two can save lives. When her tour is over, she’s appalled to learn

combat dogs aren’t reintegrated back into society. Usually they’re put to sleep, because dogs get PTSD, too. A crowd-pleaser that doesn’t want to be one, “Leaveyâ€? is a bit like last year’s “Loving,â€? the civilrights docudrama that skipped the usual Oscar-bait scenes, including the one where our heroes triumph in the courtroom. “Megan Leaveyâ€? isn’t nearly as sure-handed as “Loving,â€? and it lacks anything approaching director Je Nichols’ rugged poetry. But the ďŹ lmmaking is capital-S subtle, and so is Mara. Even when Megan is ďŹ nding happiness in her new life, she remains prickly, temperamental, cold, uninterested in being your rah-rah hero. This is a ďŹ lm that’s more interesting for what it isn’t than what it is, but it builds up enough good will that you can forgive it the occasional trespass — including casting an actor to play Sen. Chuck Schumer who really, really doesn’t look like Chuck Schumer. MP

Time to give the Warriors their props With the chance to complete a perfect postseason coming up Friday night, the Golden State Warriors deserve all the accolades coming their way. JOE PANTORNO @JoePantorno

joseph.pantorno@metro.us

We’ve seen superteams before in the NBA. We’ve seen a few All-Stars play together, even a couple Hall of Famers. There have been dominant postseason runs, too. The 2001 Los Angeles Lakers went 15-1 while the 1991 Chicago Bulls went 15-2. Those 72-win Bulls in 1995-96 lost three games on their way to a fourth title. Think about the names that went into those teams: Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal. Those are some of the greatest ever. And here comes the 2016-17 Golden State Warriors to simply blow the doors off everything. Friday night will present the Warriors with an opportunity to pull off the rarest of NBA feats, going 16-0 in an entire postseason. That would be four straight sweeps if they can beat LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers at Quicken Loans Arena after previously breezing past the Portland Trail Blazers, Utah Jazz and a Kawhi Leonard-less San Antonio Spurs. I’m convinced that if Leonard was healthy, that series would have gone at

least six games. But we can thank Zaza Pachulia for eliminating any sort of parity we could have experienced. It’s not right for me to use the term “breezed” when talking about the Warriors’ path to the Finals. A more appropriate term is “annihilated” or “destroyed” or “embarrassed” the competition. Through their first 13 wins, only three of them were by less than 10 points. By comparison, they have won games by 20 or more points four times. That’s just silly … and also somewhat expected. Look at this roster. Is there one in NBA history that it can be compared to? The Warriors feature two MVP award winners (Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry), four Olympic gold medalists (Andre Iguodala, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Durant), a 2017 Defensive Player of the Year finalist (Green), three players averaging over 20 points per game this season (Durant, Curry, Thompson) and the greatest 3-point shooter in NBA history (you can figure that one out yourself). You list that kind of résumé for a team and it might be more surprising that they actually lost a game at all when it matters most, even if they are playing against playoff-caliber teams and the greatest player in the world in LeBron James. Do I think this kind of dominance is good for the

game? Absolutely not. It’s hard to get into the season and the playoffs when you know, in October, what is going to happen in June. There’s very little drama, absolutely no parity and, at times, sheer boredom. That doesn’t do much for the neutral fan who isn’t invested in either team. This in no way is an indictment of the Warriors. They should be commended for building a team like this in the salary cap era. Curry is making $12.1 million this year. A two-time MVP winner, the first unanimous victor in NBA history, made less money this year than 79 of his peers. Seventy-nine. It allowed the team to sign Durant to a $54.2 million deal over the next two seasons and round out this powerhouse. Get on Durant all you want about swapping allegiances from Oklahoma City to Golden State, he saw a chance to win a ring or two and he took it. If you were in his shoes, a lot of you would have done the same exact thing. It’s OK to be angry that the NBA has become as predictable as an episode of “Scooby Doo.” But at the end of the day, you have to sit back and enjoy what you are seeing because this is a team that you will tell your grandchildren about. The 3 best bets to take at the 149th running of the Belmont Stakes There is no Triple Crown bid this year, but the final jewel will still be an exhilarating one. ROBERT CRISCOLA @itsgood2beking sports@metro.us

The 149th Belmont Stakes was bypassed by both Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming and Preakness winner Cloud Computing, but an intriguing field of 12 will line up for the 1½-mile challenge this Saturday (5 p.m., NBC). Wood Memorial winner and Derby also-ran Irish War Cry was installed as the tepid 7-2 favorite in a wide-open renewal of

the “Test of the Champion.” We’ll take a look at three of the main contenders here:

Epicharis Post Position: 11 Odds: 4-1 Epicharis ships in from his native Japan for his U.S. debut. He had enough points to qualify for the Kentucky Derby, but his connections ultimately decided to await the Belmont Stakes. The $1 million bonus that Belmont offered to a Japanese-bred Belmont Stakes winner this year may have influenced that decision. Epicharis has a win in Japan’s prestigious Hyacinth Stakes and a runner-up finish in the

UAE Derby to his credit this year. He’s likely to show speed against a field that seems to be lacking early initiative, so he has a tactical advantage. Regular jockey Christophe Lemaire will ship in to ride.

too deep, but he ran fast enough in his prior two tries to justify competing in this race for Todd Pletcher. John Velazquez has the call for Pletcher, and they already have a Kentucky Derby win under their belts this year. Pletcher has won the Belmont Stakes twice before; the filly Rags to Riches beat the boys with Velazquez aboard in 2007, and Palace Malice upset the field in the 2013 rendition of the Belmont.

Patch Post Position: 12 Odds: 12-1 Patch, the one-eyed son of 2012 Belmont winner Union Rags, garnered plenty of attention going into the Kentucky Derby and is bound to do so on Saturday as well. However, he has a legitimate chance to win this race. Patch makes just his fourth career start after finding the Derby waters

was charging home for third in the Preakness. His belated run in the Triple Crown’s middle jewel was eye-catching, as he wheeled out sixwide turning for home after steadying behind rivals on the far turn. Despite a pedigree that would play more kindly

to middle distances, Senior Investment seems to improve whenever he adds ground. Trainer Ken McPeek has upset the Belmont once before with 70-1 shot Sarava in 2002, while jockey Channing Hill seeks his first Triple Crown race victory.

Aries Travel plans can be made, but doublecheck the information and dates before you commit. A change of scenery will enhance your life and an important relationship.

Libra Sticking to a strict budget, plan or schedule will help you accomplish all you set out to do. An unexpected party will want to join you or pitch in and help.

Taurus Emotional deception regarding financial or contractual matters will develop if you don’t read the fine print. Don’t let anyone negotiate on your behalf.

Scorpio Put everything you’ve got into doing a good job and negotiating your position. Set up meetings or discuss your plans with someone in a position to help.

Gemini Don’t limit what you can do because someone deters you or puts up a fuss. You must be true to yourself if you want to avoid being controlled by someone else.

Sagittarius You’ll be confused about what you want or how you feel. Partnerships will face uncertainty. Take time to figure out your goals before you commit to anything.

Cancer Keep your intentions secret for the time being. The less others know about your plans, the easier it will be for you to put everything in place.

Capricorn Secrets will keep you from getting the facts you need to make a wise decision. Stick close to home and avoid unpredictable people trying to take advantage of you.

Leo Get involved in what’s going on in your community. Express your opinions and collaborate with people who share your ideals and principles.

Aquarius Receiving gifts, and selling your belongings are favored. Plan a garage sale. Clearing space at home will encourage you to use your skills to begin a lucrative venture.

Virgo Setbacks can be expected if you are unreasonable or come up against someone who opposes your every move. Don’t take on someone else’s responsibilities.

Pisces Stick close to home and avoid dealing with institutions, government agencies or authority figures. Confusion and delays can be expected if you travel. EUGENIA LAST
