REED TO GRILL SESSIONS TICKET SOLD IN CALIF. BRITAIN, US DENY TRUMP ON COMEY FIRING WINS $448M POWERBALL STATE VISIT DELAYED

1

Democratic Sen, Jack Reed said he would question U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions why he was involved in the firing last month of FBI Director James Comey after he had recused himself from matters relating to the Russia probe. “There’s a real question of the propriety of the attorney general participating in that in any way, shape or form,” Reed, a member of the Senate intelligence committee, said on “Fox News

Sunday.” Sessions said in a letter on Saturday that he will appear before the committee to address matters that Comey brought up last week in dramatic testimony to the same panel. The letter did not say whether Sessions planned to give public testimony on Tuesday or to appear before the panel behind closed doors. REUTERS

One ticket sold in California matched all the winning numbers drawn for the Powerball jackpot that soared to an estimated $448.7 million. The numbers revealed just after 11 p.m. were 32, 26, 20, 38 and 58, with a Powerball 3. Lottery officials said one ticket, purchased in Sun City, California, matched all the numbers for the grand prize. The lump sum payout for the winning ticket

would be $279.1 million. The grand prize in the multi-state U.S. lottery soared to its highest in months after 19 straight drawings failed to produce a winner. The last Powerball drawing to produce a jackpot winner was on April 1, said California Lottery spokesman Mike Bond. California is one of 44 states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, that participate in Powerball. REUTERS

Uber Technologies Inc.’s board will discuss Chief Executive Travis Kalanick temporarily stepping away from the embattled ride-hailing firm and consider sweeping changes to the company’s management practices at a meeting on Sunday, according to a person familiar with the situation. The person briefed on the matter said the board will discuss Kalanick taking time off from the company. The discussion involved the possibility that Kalanick might

return in a role with less authority, this person said, either in a position other than CEO or as CEO with narrower responsibilities and subject to stronger oversight. The source said it is not clear that the board will make any decision to change Kalanick’s role. The Imagine Boston 2030 is poised to put Franklin Park as one of the city’s top destinations — right next to the Freedom Trail and Boston Common on checklists for both visitors and locals to visit. Franklin Park is referred to as the “crown jewel of the Emerald Necklace,â€? the park system designed by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted (who is also the brains behind Central Park) that sits right in the heart of Boston and extends to Brookline. Franklin Park is the largest park in Boston and covers more acres than the city’s downtown area, said Natalia Urtubey, director of engagement for Imagine Boston 2030, but it’s been underutilized. Urtubey said that the park is already a destination for some people because it contains the

About 45 of these residents from the park’s surrounding neighborhoods came to an engagement event Thursday night to voice their thoughts on how the park should change. Urtubey said of Imagine Boston 2030.

TRUMP’S AMERICA

MORE TORTURE SESSIONS FOR JEFF OPINION

ELLIS HENICAN @henican

Jeff Sessions had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week. At least that’s finally over. But wait! Now, it appears that this week could be even worse. As with little Alexander in one of the greatest children’s books of all time, nothing’s been going right for Donald Trump’s attorney general. Seven short days ago, word broke that Donald was steaming mad at him. According to people close to both men, the prez was steamed that the AG had recused himself from the Russian hacking probe. In Trump’s swirling mind, that’s what led to the appointment of special counsel Bob Mueller, who suddenly seemed to be investigating everything. No president wants that, least of all Donald Trump. Sessions offered to resign, an offer Trump deflected — for now. When Sean Spicer was asked if the president was still a Sessions fan, the White House press secretary had to duck. “I have not had a discussion with him about that,” Spicer said. On Thursday, ousted FBI Director Jim Comey hinted darkly about the attorney general’s deeper connection to Russian interference in the 2016 election. On Friday, we learned that Sessions may

have hidden a third secret meeting with Russian Ambassador (and Trump pal) Sergey Kislyak. Meetings 1 and 2 had already slipped Sessions’ mind. Even the weekend provided no relief for the beleaguered Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III. As Democrats howled for answers, Sessions canceled a long-planned appearance in front of the Senate and House Appropriations Committees, subbing Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. Sessions said he’ll appear before the Intelligence Committee instead — most likely in a secret hearing, a Justice Department official made clear. Bad things in Washington almost never get better on their own. Sooner rather than later, Sessions will have to answer questions from the media, from the senators and, most dangerously, from special counsel Mueller. All three can see the cornered attorney general would be an ideal insider to flip on the president. What does Sessions know about Comey’s firing? How involved was the Trump campaign in the Russian interference? Can you say “collusion”? Yesterday, Sen. Pat Leahy spoke for many when he warned Sessions tartly: “You can’t run forever.” No, you can’t. Rachel Weisz likes it when you’re not sure if you like her characters. After all, sometimes she feels the same way. She runs hot and cold on Tessa Quayle, the doomed activist she played in “The Constant Gardener” — the role that netted her an Oscar 10 years ago. “She was a character on a moral crusade, but she was a real pain in the ass as a person — quite annoying and deeply imperfect,” Weisz tells us. “That’s what I liked, that she was on the right side of morality but she was no angel. It made me think she was a real person. “Some characters can

be too perfect to have flaws, which makes you not believe them,” she adds. The actress, 47, is through the roof about the responses she’s been getting about “My Cousin Rachel.” She plays the title role: a mysterious woman in 19th century England who may or may not have murdered her husband. His cousin, Philip (Sam Claflin), certainly thinks she’s guilty — until he meets her and finds her charming enough that he quickly falls in love. Still, there’s always the chance that Philip could be her next victim, and we spend the entire film wondering which side she’s on. “I made a decision whether she was guilty or innocent,” Weisz says. “The director [Roger Michell] didn’t want me to tell him which way I decided. It was a mystery from him, which was a fun game.” She won’t tell us either. Instead, she likes to

Have some perspective The ambiguity in “My Cousin Rachel” feels even more pronounced now, when we live in a “post-truth” world — when we can’t be sure if our president is a Russian puppet, and Kellyanne Conway drops words like “alternative facts.” “We’re living in highly ambiguous times,” Weisz says. Still, she’s reluctant to only read or listen to those she agrees with. “I used to turn on [Bill] O’Reilly for fun,” she says with a laugh. “It’s fascinating to listen to someone you don’t agree with.” Weisz describes herself as “cautiously optimistic” about the future, hopeful that this intense, unsure period will come to an end. “There’s only so long it can last,” she says. “I understand the damage to the Earth is irreparable, but I’m looking at this era as a finite thing. History goes through changes, and people come out the other side. I’m trying to have some perspective.” Still, she doesn’t feel that way about everything. “Brexit feels like a death,” Weisz adds. “There’s no going back. It’s like a death in the family — something’s gone forever.”

hear what viewers think. “People have interpreted it differently,” she says. “ I ’ v e talked to peo-

Not long ago, nobody knew that the only U.S. State Silver Bars locked away in the private vaults of the Lincoln Treasury would be allocated to the Federated Mint for a limited release to residents in 6 states. Every single one of the 50 U.S. State Silver Bars are date numbered in the order they ratified the Constitution and were admitted into the Union beginning in the late 1700s. “As Executive Advisor to the Lincoln Treasury I get paid to deliver breaking news. So, for anyone who hasn’t heard yet, highly collectable U.S. State Silver Bars are now being handed over at just the state minimum set by the Lincoln Treasury to residents in 6 states who beat the offer deadline, which is why I pushed for this announcement to be widely advertised,” said Mary Ellen Withrow, the emeritus 40th Treasurer of the United States of America. “These bars are solid .999 pure fine silver and will always be a valuable precious metal which is why everyone is snapping up as many as they can before they’re all gone,” Withrow said. There’s one thing Withrow wants to make very clear. State residents only have two days to call the Toll Free Or-

Shissler, Executive Director of Vault Operations at the private Lincoln Treasury. To make it fair, special Toll Free Overflow Hotlines have been set up to ensure all residents have an equal chance to get them. Rapid shipments to state residents are scheduled to begin with the first calls being accepted at precisely 8:30am today. “We’re bracing for all the calls and doing everything we can to make sure no one gets left out, but the U.S. State Silver Bars are only being handed over at just the state resident minimum set by the Lincoln Treasury for the next two days. For now, residents can get the U.S. State Silver Bars at just the state minimum set by the Lincoln Treasury as long as they call before the order deadline ends,” confirmed Shissler. “With so many state residents trying to get these U.S. State Silver Bars, lines are busy so keep trying. All calls will be answered,” Shissler said. N

Sox ready for MLB’s worst, and best The Red Sox will face the lowly Phillies, followed by the red hot Astros this week. MATT BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

The Red Sox (34-27) would be wise to take care of business this week against the lowly Philadelphia Phillies (21-39). In fact, the Sox absolutely should win all four games — the first two at Fenway on Monday and Tuesday, the second two in Philly on Wednesday and Thursday — against their “traditional” National League “rival.” Not only is it crucial for the Sox to keep pace with the first place Yankees, who the Sox lost two of three from on the road last week, but it will be important for Boston to be playing good baseball heading into their showdown

with the American League leading Houston Astros this coming weekend in Texas. The Astros are a remarkable 44-19 this season and many are wondering whether or not they’re the best MLB team in a generation. Considering no other team in the AL has 40 wins yet (the Yankees are second best with 36), everyone has to admit that what the Astros are currently doing is otherworldly.

Cruising along It’s not exactly an Astros-like pace, but the Red Sox are currently hot too. The Sox are 13-6 in their last 19 games and their .684 win percentage since May 21 is tied for third in MLB, according to RedSox.com. All top baseball teams need a good balance of strong pitching and hitting, and the Sox have gotten both recently for the most part. Excluding back-

to-back embarrassing offensive efforts against the Yankees last week (the Sox lost 8-0 in the Bronx last Wednesday and 9-1 on Thursday), the Red Sox have averaged an impressive 5.7 runs per game since the start of June. The

aforementioned Astros are the best offensive team in baseball and are averaging 5.4 runs per game this season to give you an idea of how well

the Sox are doing at the plate lately.

the Red Sox on Monday (7:05 p.m., NESN) against the Phillies at Fenway. Porcello is coming off a relatively ugly outing last week against the Yankees in which he surrendered five earned runs on eight hits (including two home runs). Jerad Eickhoff (0-7, 5.15) is slated to get the start for Philly on Monday. David Price will pitch in front of the Fenway faithful on Tuesday (7 p.m., NESN). Price was rocked by the Yankees as well last week, giving up six earned runs to the Bombers. It will be the first time Price will have pitched since he went into an expletivelaced tirade against several members of the Boston sports media last week.

Aries Putting pressure on someone or bending to accommodate others should be averted. You are best off working alone. Appreciate who you are.

Libra Think twice before you sign up to do something with a partner. The chance of clashing on several issues will make it difficult to get things done your way.

Taurus Put more effort into taking care of how you look and fulfilling your responsibilities. Keeping up appearances will determine the kinds of opportunities you are given.

Scorpio Choose a destination that you find inviting. Whether it’s in your community, far away, or the confines of your home, the respite will do you good.

Gemini An unexpected change will catch you off guard. Do your best to stabilize your position by minimizing your involvement in a potentially costly situation.

Sagittarius Resolving issues that can be damaging to your relationship with a business or personal partner will encourage you to make decisions that will improve your life.

Cancer Take a different approach to the way you handle people, money and emotional issues. If you look for creative solutions, you will make an impression on your peers.

Capricorn Keep it simple when dealing with any expenditures or business deals today. Be cautious if someone tries to sell you something. Stick to your budget.

Leo Put a halt on any decision that involves an emotional situation. You aren’t likely to make the best choice at this volatile time. A work matter will suffer if ego is involved.

Aquarius Put more energy into the way you present who you are and how you look. Make a positive change at home that will help cut your costs.

Virgo Listen to others’ offers or suggestions, but don’t make any sudden changes. Gathering information will help you make a move when the time is more appropriate.

Pisces Offer assistance to those in need. Take time to explain what you mean when dealing with young and old people alike in order to avoid a misunderstanding. EUGENIA LAST
