TRUMP’S LAWYER SAYS HE CANADA’S DETENTION WAS ASKED TO TESTIFY OF MEXICANS SURGES
1
President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen said on Tuesday he had been asked to testify on Sept. 5 before the House Intelligence Committee. “I am committed to complying with the subpoena by the House Permanent Select Intelligence Committee, including the request to testify on Sept. 5,” Cohen told Reuters, confirming an account first reported by Bloomberg News.
The House committee is among those investigating alleged Russian meddling in the U.S. election and any possible collusion with the president’s campaign or associates. It approved a subpoena for Cohen on May 31, but the committee had not announced any date for his testimony. REUTERS

Detention of Mexican citizens in Canada has spiked since December, when the government lifted its visa requirement for visitors from Mexico, figures obtained by Reuters show, even as Canada burnishes its image as more welcoming than the United States. Detentions in the first five months of 2017 were more than twice the previous two years combined, according to Canada Border Services Agency
statistics provided last week in response to a Reuters request. Canada’s detention of Mexicans surged more than tenfold from 24 in November to 331 in April, the data show. The number of Mexicans filing refugee claims more than quadrupled from November to March. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised to lift the visa requirement, imposed by the previous government, during the 2015 election campaign. REUTERS
DEPUTY AG: NO CAUSE TO FIRE MUELLER
3
The No. 2 official at the U.S. Justice Department told Congress the special counsel investigating Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign is going to have “the full degree of independence” he needs. “Director Mueller is going to have the full degree of independence that he needs to conduct that investigation appropriately,” Deputy Attorney
General Rod Rosenstein told a Senate appropriations subcommittee, referring to special counsel Robert Mueller. Rosenstein, who has the sole ability to fire Mueller given that Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from matters relating to the investigation, told the panel he had seen no evidence of good cause for letting Mueller go and that he would not follow any theoretical order to fire him absent such evidence. VERIZON CLOSES YAHOO DEAL, MAYER STEPS DOWN

Verizon Communications Inc said on Tuesday it closed its $4.48 billion acquisition of Yahoo Inc.’s core business and that Marissa Mayer, chief executive of the internet company, had resigned. The completion of the acquisition marks the end of the line for Yahoo as a standalone internet company, a storied tech pioneer once valued at more than $100 billion. Verizon, the No. 1 U.S. wireless operator, is combining
Yahoo with AOL, which it bought two years ago, to form a new venture called Oath, led by AOL CEO Tim Armstrong. Oath’s more than 50 brands include HuffPost, TechCrunch and Tumblr. “Given the inherent changes to my role, I’ll be leaving the company,” Mayer wrote in an email to employees on Tuesday that she also posted on Tumblr. “However, I want all of you to know that I’m brimming with nostalgia, gratitude, and optimism.” REUTERS

Jeff Sessions angers Democrats with refusal to testify on Trump conversations The testimony by Sessions marked the latest chapter in a saga that has dogged the Trump presidency. U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday denounced as a “detestable lie” the idea that he colluded with Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential campaign, and he clashed with Democratic lawmakers over his refusal to detail his conversations with President Donald Trump. Sessions, a senior member of the Republican president’s Cabinet and an adviser to his presidential campaign, had a series of tense exchanges with Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee during about 2½ hours of high-stakes testimony as they pressed him to recount conversations with the president. “You raised your right hand here today and said you would solemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” Democratic Sen. Martin Heinrich said. “Now you’re not answering questions. You’re impeding this investigation.” Sessions refused to say whether he had discussed FBI Director James Comey’s handling of the FBI’s Russia probe with Trump before the president fired Comey on May 9. Similarly, he did not answer whether Trump had expressed concern to Sessions about the attorney general’s March decision to recuse himself from the Russia investigation. Sessions previously offered to resign because of tensions with Trump over his recusal decision. Sessions also refused to answer whether any Jus-
tice Department officials had discussed possible presidential pardons of individuals being looked at in the Russian investigations. Russia has denied repeatedly that it interfered in the U.S. election, and Trump has denied any collusion by his campaign with Moscow. Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden told Sessions, “I believe the American people have had it with stonewalling. Americans don’t want to hear that answers to relevant questions are privileged.” “I am not stonewalling,” Sessions replied. Sessions said he was following Justice Department policy and would not discuss communications with the president. Sen. Angus King, an independent, questioned Sessions’ legal basis for refusing to answer. Sessions said Trump had not invoked executive privilege. Executive privilege is a power that can be claimed by a president or senior executive branch officials to withhold information from Congress or the courts to protect the executive branch decisionmaking process. “It is my judgment that it would be inappropriate for me to answer and reveal private conversations with the president when he has not had a full opportunity to review the questions and to make a decision on whether or not to approve such an answer,” Sessions said. The committee’s Republican chairman, Sen. Richard Burr, asked Sessions to ask the White House if there were areas officials there would be comfortable with him answering and provide written answers if so. REUTERS

Fecal transplants are now a trendy thing at Boston Children’s Hospital It may seem yucky, but Dr. Stacy Kahn thinks stool transplants could help heal kids with bowel diseases.
called stool transplant, fecal transplant and even a “poop pill,” is a medical procedure in which stool from someone who is healthy, and all the microbes and bacteria within it, gets transferred to someone who is sick. FMT is somewhat of a trendy topic lately, said Dr. Stacy Kahn, a gastroenterologist at Boston Children’s Hospital, and for good reason — the practice has a 90 percent success rate when it comes to treating C. diff, a bacterial infection of the colon. But scientists don’t understand a lot about FMT yet, or all the instances in which it can be beneficial. That’s why Kahn is spearheading two FMT trials at BCH which she says are the first of their kind to study the effectiveness of fecal transplants on children and young adults. “The idea is that somehow — and we’re

Someone’s poop could be another person’s medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital, as part of an experimental new treatment that has prospective patients lining up and friends offering to donate their own poop. Yes, you read that right. It might sound like a naughty child’s joke, but some doctors believe the secret to relief for patients with inflammatory bowel diseases may lie in someone else’s stool. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), also

still exploring how that is — we’re restoring the healthy bacteria to individuals whose disease is in a state called dysbiosis, which is a disruption in the normal balance of healthy bacteria, or mi-
crobes in the gut,” she said. “Once [these microbes] are off-kilter or out of whack, they’re not doing their job,” she said. “We need to coexist with them in healthy harmony.
When we have a disease, the body is not doing that.” The trials are currently underway and specifically look at treating Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis, each a chronic disease and a
major category of inflammatory bowel diseases which cause that imbalance in the gut bacteria. The trials are eightweek-long double-blind studies, with about 10 patients each for Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis. Some patients receive an FMT enema and also take the “poop pills” orally; others take a placebo. The donated material comes from Massachusetts’ stool bank, OpenBiome. Since no studies have focused on kids and young adults, there are a few differences. The microbiome in children is “more malleable,” Kahn said, meaning their bodies are more responsive to changes. Parents also have to consent to allowing their child to be in the trial. Coming to the hospital to receive treatments is no picnic for kids, Kahn said, but neither is their painful, chronic disease.

Boston hits second heat wave of the year before summer even starts But you should see some relief from the sweltering temps soon. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota
kristin.toussaint@metro.us
It’s not even officially summer and Boston has already hit its second heat wave. As of 11 a.m. Tuesday, the thermometer hit 91 degrees, marking the second heat wave so far this year. An official heat wave requires temperatures meet or exceed 90 degrees for three consecutive days, according to the National Weather Service.
Boston’s first heat wave was in May, when temperatures climbed to a record high of 92 degrees May 18. Previously, the record temp was 91 degrees, set May 18, 1936. That heat wave was one of the earliest on record for the city. This second heat wave before the official start of summer, June 21, makes this year the earliest Boston has seen two heat waves since record-keeping began in 1872. City officials are warning Bostonians to keep cool in the sweltering temps. Mayor Marty Walsh opened the Boston Centers for Youth & Families cooling centers on
Tuesday to provide some relief to residents. Standalone BCYF sites are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and the school-based sites are open from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. The centers also have 16 total indoor pools open to all. Find a center here. Though we are in a heat wave and a heat advisory has been issued, the city hasn’t yet declared a heat emergency, a marker reserved for when temperatures reach 95 degrees or higher for at least three consecutive days. Wednesday should be a beautiful (and bearable) sunny, 75-degree day.

When you think of Syrian refugees, what comes to mind? Maybe you think of the little boy from Aleppo, heartbreakingly photographed sitting in an ambulance, his body caked with dirt and blood. Maybe you picture the boats, stuffed to capacity and sinking, as Syrians try to escape to Greece and some semblance of safety. Michael Cohen, a photographer born and raised in Boston, wants to show a different side of Syrian refugees. His exhibit, “The Faces of Syrian Refugees, is on display at Boston City Hall throughout June in honor of Immigrant Heritage Month. Cohen said that the idea for the photography project came to him last spring as he was “ruffling with my own conscious after watching the Syrian crisis escalate. “I kept on thinking that the world was going to step in and stop it, but of course the world hasn’t.

So I thought, ‘What can I do as one person?’ he said. Cohen had seen polls saying Americans were not interested in the idea of Syrian refugees emigrating to the United States. When Americans think of those refugees, they see the negative images of their struggles and hardships, he said. “So many images [of Syrian refugees] are not necessarily images we would welcome into our neighborhoods. As a photographer, I thought maybe I can do something about that, Cohen said. “Instead of showing them at their worst, I’m showing them at their best. Since March 2011,

Cohen’s exhibit shows Syrians who have emigrated to the U.S., Canada and Europe — people who have settled into a new life, new jobs and new schools. Cohen partnered with Dana Janbek, a researcher at Lasell College, and Amy Bracken, a freelance journalist, to create the exhibit. The ‘Bachelor in Paradise’ story gets worse On Monday, news broke that production on “Bachelor in Paradise” had been halted after accusations of sexual misconduct came out. Now, more disturbing details are arising — with one contestant saying she did not consent to the filmed sexual encounter. Contestant Corinne Olympios says she was blacked out when things got sexual with
“The Bachelorette” alum DeMario Jackson. And according to TMZ, she blames the producers for not pulling the plug and protecting her. Apparently, after the alleged swimming pool incident — which saw what TMZ delicately calls “intense rubbing” and a series of sex acts, but not actual intercourse between Corinne and DeMario — fel-
low cast members began telling Corinne about what happened with DeMario, and that they had voiced concern to producers. Corinne says she remembers nothing. This is messed up on so many levels. Here’s hoping Corinne isn’t simply seen as a girl who was asking for it — because no matter what, women are never “just asking for it.”

Julia Stiles is having a baby! You may remember Julia Stiles from such influential, groundbreaking films as “10 Things I Hate About You” or “Save the Last Dance.” She was also in some of those Bourne movies, but I like to remember her when she was at her prime — as a modern day so-called shrew making out with Heath Ledger; or as a ballet dancer who chooses hip-hop and interracial love over weekly therapy and hanging out with
Kerry Washington. Anyway, Stiles is 36-years-old now. My, how time flies! Oh, and she’s got a gut full of baby. That’s right: She’s pregnant! People broke the news first, reporting that
Stiles and her fiance, Preston J. Cook, will welcome their first child later this year. The couple met on the set of the 2015 film “Go with Me,” where Cook worked as a camera assistant. Also? They’ve been engaged since Christmas Eve 2015 and they’re like, in no rush to get married or whatever. Once again, bravo to those citizens brave enough to have a baby under Trump’s rule. So brave. I mean, if Johansson and Jost are holding hands while dining, things are probably pretty serious. I personally wouldn’t let someone’s sweaty palm get in the way of a good meal — but hey! This season of “Orange is the New Black is the most intense yet. The entire plot takes place over the course of three chaotic days in Litchfield Prison. And according to Dascha Polanco, Litchfield’s idealistic Dayanara Diaz, the series is going bigger than ever. We sat down with Polanco, as well as Selenis Leyva (Gloria Mendoza) and Jackie Cruz (Marisol “La Flaca Gonzalez) to talk about what they’ve learned from the series, politics in prison and showing the powerful side of Latina women on television. So many stars of this show are powerful Latina women. How do you

think that has changed television? Jackie Cruz: I think it started with our show, because we were the first ones. People saw how powerful Latinas could be in a role. Selenis Leyva: Netflix is breaking down barriers. Women in a leading roles is something that goes way beyond what Hollywood is used to doing, and I think that’s why Netflix is so successful: Empowered women are something that hasn’t
been seen a lot. Do you feel a responsibility in telling these stories that have to do with politics and society? Dascha Polanco: The writers have been able to touch on these issues in an indirect way. Being able to be a Latina right now, outside of statistics and stereotypes, is very important — not falling into the negative. We have to prove that we’re part of the United States’ DNA.
What have you learned from the prison universe? JC: I feel like each season educates us a little more about the life these women live, and how corrupt and manipulative that world can become. SL: Life can become really political in prison. After the initial success of “Orange Is The New Black, we started working with several associations that support
women who now have a second chance. And their stories have surprised me. A lot of what happens in the series is really common — the relationships with the guards, the hierarchies. This season is more intense than ever. How do you do to not let it aect you o set? SL: You never know when something is going to affect you and how. There were some

scenes that were difficult for me and affected me a lot — so much so that even when I got home I had to avoid certain subjects. Did you ever imagine that you would have so much success? SL: We never imagined it. Sometimes it’s still hard to believe. Now, we’re recognizable, so we’ve been able to take advantage to help different causes — like what we do with the LGBT community, the Women’s Prison Association, different children’s associations and even fashion. DP: There’s also all the benefits we’ve gained, like getting into restaurants faster or getting an extra glass of wine on flights. [They laugh.] It’s really a good thing indeed.

Full service dining establishments around the Bay State are paying particular attention to the coffee they serve, carefully curating that after-dinner cup of joe with beans from around the world. Mass. towns with waterfront home property under $400,000
Ditch the city for beachside living on a budget. JACKIE KOLGRAF @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
The median list price for a home in Massachusetts is $419,000, but that number skyrockets to nearly $700,000 when looking for a pad in Boston. According to Zillow, property values in the

Smart kitchen gadgets
From a DropScale app to a Weber iGrill Bluetooth, let these digital helpers become your new home chefs. DANIEL CASILLAS/MWN
Mellow With this device you can have dinner ready the moment you enter your home. Mellow is a remote cooking gadget designed specifically for the sous-vide method, in which food is placed in vacuum-sealed plastic bags and cooked slowly in steam or a water bath at low temperatures. You can use a mobile app to adjust Mellow’s settings and timers so your meal will be ready exactly when you need it.
DropScale Measuring the weight of your ingredients is a very important factor to make your meal perfectly balanced. That’s why a device called DropScale was created. The smart gadget connects to your iPad via Bluetooth and has a special app that will measure the weight of everything inside a bowl placed on top of DropScale. The application will also alert you once the right amount of each ingredient is added.
EveryCook EveryCook is the first digital device that connects to the internet and guides you through the entire cooking process. The gadget is also able to autonomously prepare the meal with ingredients you put inside, and alert you when it’s ready. You can also download new recipes from the web and upload them to EveryCook’s database.
SmartyPans This smart pan, which connects to your phone via Bluetooth, provides step-by-step instructions on how to prepare any meal via voice commands. It can also calculate the nutritional value of whatever you are cooking and provide additional info, including the weight of ingredients, internal temperature and humidity.
iGrill The Weber iGrill Bluetooth thermometers make grilling easier, more convenient and smarter. Just download the app and connect the wire to monitor the temperature of your steak. The iGrill app will display all the necessary information on your phone’s screen so you can track it from any place at any time.

LEBRON JAMES TO R S? THE LAKERS?
AMERICA, THE GAME SHOW How screwed are we as a country? Basically our ambassador to nuclear-armed North Korea is Dennis Rodman. Rodman was back in the land of “Un” Tuesday as he hopes to “open a door” between his buddy Kim Jong Un and his former “Celebrity Apprentice” boss — President Donald Trump. (I can’t believe I just typed that sentence.) For the record, I don’t see Rodman’s relationship with Kim Jong Un ending well. It’s easy to envision Rodzilla saying the wrong thing to the North Korean leader, or doing the wrong thing to him (i.e. not allowing the 4-foot-3 Kim Jong to beat
him in a game of 1-on-1). This would lead to some sort of hostage situation involving Rodman, with Michael hael Jordan (he’s basically ly the only man in history tory who’s been able to reel Rodman in) having to negotiate things between Kim Jong, Rodman and Trump. This is truly science fiction stuff. Imagine telling anyone in 1997 that Trump and Rodman were key figures in trying to solve major international relations? The e equivalent would be if Kris Jenner and d
Gronk were in charge of patching together the Middle East in 2037. Don’t rule it out.
LeBron James famously said that his stint with the Miami Heat was like going to college. He went there to have fun with his buddy Dwyane Wade, and to win titles. He spent four years in South Florida, from 2010-2014. Four years. Ya know, like college. I suppose we must now consider LeBron’s second stint with the Cavaliers to be grad school. After another four years, it’s looking like it’ll be time for LeBron to enter the real world in the summer of 2018 by going to a place that is the antithesis of real — Los Angeles. The old LeBron free agency buzz cranked up over the weekend, thanks mostly to Jalen Rose and Bill Simmons (two guys who are tight with one another from their days on the ESPN NBA studio show). You know most mos of the reasons
TT MA

by now that LeBron would be interested in LA, specifically the Lakers. He has a home in LA, his business ventures are located in LA, he has enormous respect for Lakers boss Magic Johnson, and he wants to be someplace warm. But would a move to Hollywood make sense for LeBron, basketballwise? He’ll be an old 33 next summer, and he’ll need more help than
ever if he wants to e continue to make c the t NBA Finals year-in and y year-out. y Word on o the street is i that LeBron L
wants to play with w his Banana Boat buddies — Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade (again) — before he retires. Could they all meet up u in LA with the Lakers? You can’t rule anything out in today’s NBA climate. Hey, it would at least open up the East for the Celtics with LeBron gone, right? ALL IMAGES COURTESY GETTY IMAGES

CUTTHROAT T BILL If you needed any further proof that the Patriots are absolutely ruthless, check out Bill Belichick’s comments the other day at OTAs. “You know, we’ve had enough parades, enough celebrations, and enough everything,” Belichick said about the team’s win in Super Bowl 51. “This 2017 team hasn’t done anything yet — none of us have. We really need to focus on what we’re doing this year. There have been a lot of great moments in the past, which is great, but that isn’t going to
help us this year.” Uhhh, Bill? It’s June. You still have several weeks of boating in Nantucket to tend to. Now, Tom Brady’s age is always discussed
around here, and all indications are that he’s going to try and play at least three more seasons. But what about Belichick? Belichick said on his “Football Life” documentary that he didn’t want to wind up like (former Buffalo Bills head coach) Marv Levy — coaching into his 70s. But Belichick said that in his 50s, and he’s 65 now. He sure seems like he could stick around another 10 years. I mean, seriously, what is that guy gonna do after football?
EVERYWHERE I SEE, 28-3 An Atlanta sports blog (yes, one exists) tweeted last week that the Patriots putting 283 diamonds in their Super Bowl rings was “probably the most classless, childish thing” they had ever seen. It got 131 retweets and 177 likes, which are pretty good numbers for @ ATLSportsScoop. If you hadn’t heard,
the Pats put that total of diamonds in their rings to acknowledge the 28-3 comeback they had against the Falcons in Super Bowl 51. Now, classless would have been if the Giants had put 181 diamonds in their 2007 Super Bowl rings to call back the Pats’ 18-1 record, coming up just short of a perfect season. The
move by the Pats was just slightly “less classless,” to coin a phrase. I mean, you see “28-3” everywhere on social media. We’ve seen people run with “28-3” signs in the Boston Marathon, and “March 28” aka 3-28 day, was something of a Boston holiday a few months back. I suppose we are kind of rubbing it in.

Fenway kind of feeling It’s not a question as to if you’ve ever been to Fenway Park if you live in Boston, but how many times do you go each summer? Outside of New England, Fenway remains one of two must-see-before-you-die Major League Baseball parks the other being Wrigley Field in Chicago. Fenway is the oldest park in baseball, having opened in 1912. Wrigley opened in 1914. As for some other old school Boston settings — take in a soccer or lacrosse game at BU’s Nickerson Field. The field, located right in the heart of the city, was once home to MLB’s Boston Braves, and the Patriots played football there for three seasons. Other must-see locales in the Hub are the Charles River for the Head of the Charles each October, Agganis Arena for BU hockey and Harvard Stadium for the Harvard-Yale game.
Boston fans sometimes take for granted how special and unique Fenway Park really is. GETTY IMAGES
‘The Sports Bucket List’ highlights best Boston has to offer In a new book, two former Sports Illustrated writers offer 101 must-dos for sports fans. EVAN MACY @evan_macy
evan.macy@metro.us
There’s always been something about sports and making lists. For sports fans in areas like Boston, New York or Philadelphia, it’s easy to get so consumed by local teams and the four major sports that it’s easy to forget that the world of sports is vast and farreaching. In “The Sports Bucket List,” former Sports Illustrated writers Rob Fleder and Steve Hoffman hop from continent to continent, from sport to sport you didn’t even know was a sport, highlighting the things sports fans should aspire to witness in their lifetime.
Some are obvious, like seeing Michigan play Ohio State in the Big House, seeing the Belmont Stakes or a Red Sox game at Fenday. Others are much less so. “There’s Elephant polo in Nepal,” Fleder told Metro. “We actually did a story about it at Sports Illustrated and it stuck in my mind and Steve Hoffman’s mind and we always thought that would be a cool thing to do and we went back to that. It was one of those things by virtue of SI that I even came across. That’s out there on the far edge of possibility. And then there are the much more predictable ones on the list, the Super Bowl, great events and stadiums.” Their book compiles a list of 101 things a sports fan should attempt to do in his or her lifetime. Some are games, some are rivalries, some are an-
nual events and some are less annual events. Some are hallowed grounds, like Hershey Arena where Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a game, and some are places of ethos and myth like Doubleday field in Cooperstown, New York. “There are historical things and then the things that are happening now and are only going to be happening for so long,” Fleder said, “and thats in the nature of the bucket list thing. The clock is always ticking and if you want to see LeBron James play you better get with it.”
