President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen said on Tuesday he had been asked to testify on Sept. 5 before the House Intelligence Committee. “I am committed to complying with the subpoena by the House Permanent Select Intelligence Committee, including the request to testify on Sept. 5,” Cohen told Reuters, confirming an account first reported by Bloomberg News.
The House committee is among those investigating alleged Russian meddling in the U.S. election and any possible collusion with the president’s campaign or associates. It approved a subpoena for Cohen on May 31, but the committee had not announced any date for his testimony. REUTERS

Detention of Mexican citizens in Canada has spiked since December, when the government lifted its visa requirement for visitors from Mexico, figures obtained by Reuters show, even as Canada burnishes its image as more welcoming than the United States. Detentions in the first five months of 2017 were more than twice the previous two years combined, according to Canada Border Services Agency
statistics provided last week in response to a Reuters request. Canada’s detention of Mexicans surged more than tenfold from 24 in November to 331 in April, the data show. The number of Mexicans filing refugee claims more than quadrupled from November to March. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised to lift the visa requirement, imposed by the previous government, during the 2015 election campaign. REUTERS
The No. 2 official at the U.S. Justice Department told Congress the special counsel investigating Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign is going to have “the full degree of independence” he needs. “Director Mueller is going to have the full degree of independence that he needs to conduct that investigation appropriately,” Deputy Attorney
General Rod Rosenstein told a Senate appropriations subcommittee, referring to special counsel Robert Mueller. Rosenstein, who has the sole ability to fire Mueller given that Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from matters relating to the investigation, told the panel he had seen no evidence of good cause for letting Mueller go and that he would not follow any theoretical order to fire him absent such evidence. Verizon Communications Inc said on Tuesday it closed its $4.48 billion acquisition of Yahoo Inc.’s core business and that Marissa Mayer, chief executive of the internet company, had resigned. The completion of the acquisition marks the end of the line for Yahoo as a standalone internet company, a storied tech pioneer once valued at more than $100 billion. Verizon, the No. 1 U.S. wireless operator, is combining
Yahoo with AOL, which it bought two years ago, to form a new venture called Oath, led by AOL CEO Tim Armstrong. Oath’s more than 50 brands include HuffPost, TechCrunch and Tumblr. “Given the inherent changes to my role, I’ll be leaving the company,” Mayer wrote in an email to employees on Tuesday that she also posted on Tumblr. “However, I want all of you to know that I’m brimming with nostalgia, gratitude, and optimism.” REUTERS

Jeff Sessions angers Democrats with refusal to testify on Trump conversations The testimony by Sessions marked the latest chapter in a saga that has dogged the Trump presidency. U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday denounced as a “detestable lie” the idea that he colluded with Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential campaign, and he clashed with Democratic lawmakers over his refusal to detail his conversations with President Donald Trump. Sessions, a senior member of the Republican president’s Cabinet and an adviser to his presidential campaign, had a series of tense exchanges with Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee during about 2½ hours of high-stakes testimony as they pressed him to recount conversations with the president. “You raised your right hand here today and said you would solemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” Democratic Sen. Martin Heinrich said. “Now you’re not answering questions. You’re impeding this investigation.” Sessions refused to say whether he had discussed FBI Director James Comey’s handling of the FBI’s Russia probe with Trump before the president fired Comey on May 9. Similarly, he did not answer whether Trump had expressed concern to Sessions about the attorney general’s March decision to recuse himself from the Russia investigation. Sessions previously offered to resign because of tensions with Trump over his recusal decision. Sessions also refused to answer whether any Jus-
tice Department officials had discussed possible presidential pardons of individuals being looked at in the Russian investigations. Russia has denied repeatedly that it interfered in the U.S. election, and Trump has denied any collusion by his campaign with Moscow. Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden told Sessions, “I believe the American people have had it with stonewalling. Americans don’t want to hear that answers to relevant questions are privileged.” “I am not stonewalling,” Sessions replied. Sessions said he was following Justice Department policy and would not discuss communications with the president. Sen. Angus King, an independent, questioned Sessions’ legal basis for refusing to answer. Sessions said Trump had not invoked executive privilege. Executive privilege is a power that can be claimed by a president or senior executive branch officials to withhold information from Congress or the courts to protect the executive branch decisionmaking process. “It is my judgment that it would be inappropriate for me to answer and reveal private conversations with the president when he has not had a full opportunity to review the questions and to make a decision on whether or not to approve such an answer,” Sessions said. The committee’s Republican chairman, Sen. Richard Burr, asked Sessions to ask the White House if there were areas officials there would be comfortable with him answering and provide written answers if so. REUTERS

Philly DJs continue to inspire and unite partiers citywide As summer heats up, Philly DJs spin records to match and shape the moods of their city. MICHAEL BUTLER @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
Philadelphia DJs are entertainers that find ways to unite people through their scratches of the latest hip-hop jams and their blends of soulful classics. From legendary DJ Jazzy Jeff to soulful mixmaster Rich Medina, Philadelphia DJs have left an indelible mark on popular music and earned a reputation from music lovers worldwide as some of the best to ever rock a party. But whether people are dancing to their favorite songs at summer block parties or showing off their newest dance moves at a club or bar, good music and the DJs that play it are an integral part of Philly’s culture. Philly has a tough reputation as the city that created Rocky Balboa and even booed Santa Claus at an Eagles game. Fortunately for DJ Lean Wit It, that Philly toughness makes his connection to the people that love his mixes much stronger. “I feel like the DJ has a responsibility,” Lean Wit It said. “When Trump got inaugurated, I DJed the night before and the night of his inauguration. You could feel the [low] energy in the city, especially among people of color. Having an audience of disenfranchised people of color, I felt like it was my duty to play music that was uplifting [and made] people leave with some sort of hope.” Astro 8000 is another local DJ who has used his talents to bring people of all different backgrounds together to celebrate being different, through eclectic events like the
Pink Party. Born in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Astro 8000 fell in love with the Philadelphia music scene through a close friend and never looked back. “[One of my best friends] grew up with DJ Buzzworthy and DJ Diamond Kuts uptown, so I got plugged in with Buzzworthy,” Astro recalled. “Buzz eventually told me that him and Diamond Kuts liked how I DJed and invited me to be part of [Diamond Kuts’] Born Leaders DJ squad.” Learning alongside popular DJ Diamond Kuts also opened Astro’s eyes up to having inclusive events, a signature of Philly’s club scene. “I don’t really like specifically any one kind of culture or scene at my parties or events. I throw the Pink Party because pink is a universal thing as a color and not just the so-called cool kids come out, but all kinds of people with open minds who just want to party,” he said.

New “Allongée” exercise class designed by Philly trainer throws Metro writer for a loop. CASSIE HEPLER @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
I’m not the most physically coordinated person. So it made perfect sense to start my first Allongée experience with the newest, hardest class the boutique exercise space offers, SOAR!, which takes the regular ballet/ barre class and elevates it onto a personal-sized trampoline. Allongée combines strength training for the small muscle groups (like in ballet or barre class) with a large range of movement in the high-energy, low-impact CardioBarre technique. Fortunately, I am a yoga lover, so some of the same movements seemed to transition well. Tiny and taut founder and Allongée creator Jillian Dreusikemet met us outside in the alley for the 11:30 a.m. weekday class on Bodine Street (across from the Old City Beer Garden) and let us in to the studio space on the second floor, complete with a shower and slipless
socks for sale. With water for sale ($1 each), we hydrated, filled our reusable bottles, put on our grippy socks and got into our trampoline space with a mirror in front to watch as we made fools of ourselves. I chose the spot right next to Jill for maximum what-am-Idoing purposes, and soon we were bouncing. Thank goodness for that barre in front of my trampoline, and that the “mirror” is actually made out of mylar, a form of shiny plastic. At first, I was amazed at how well I could keep up while turning a bright
my graceful coordination. So I would hold on to the barre and do baby bounces while targeting the ol’ glutes and legs in a more “normal” manner. My favorite part was certainly just bouncing up and down as high as you could go during our “resting” phases. It was fun, childlike and exhilarating to almost fall at points. I bounced my way through class and took it easy when I needed to. Jill encouraged water breaks and warned us we would be sore the next day. I was surprisingly not sore at all afterward, but my appetite was rav-

We were doing cheerleading toe touches in the air (some better than others) while not trying to smash our faces in the mirror. I quickly learned not to keep up with the tempo of the pumping music and go at my own pace to save myself from certain cartoonstyle bodily harm. I also learned that doing front, side and back kicks while bouncing is impossible for me with
enous. I also dropped a couple pounds as my body responds best to strength training mixed with cardio. Allongée is supposed to “build strength and stamina while also creating length and flawless muscle structure,” and was started as a program to assist dancers with their cardiovascular health. This summer, Allongée will expand nationally with an online video library, and pop-up classes will also be held in New York City and Washington, D.C.

At that time, police said, Simon struck the
police horse, Sampson, in the neck and obstructed other officers from being able to move the crowd onto the sidewalk along that block. Also on Tuesday, Cosby’s spokesman, Andrew Wyatt, released a statement from a woman, Marguerite Jackson, who was barred from testifying as a defense witness. Jackson said she worked with Constand at Temple University and shared a hotel room with her during occasional trips. On an unspecified date, she said, the women saw a news story about a famous man accused of drugging and sexually assaulting women. Constand told Jackson a highprofile man had done something
similar to her, according to the statement. After Jackson pressed her, Constand allegedly admitted it had not happened but said she could easily use the story to make money off the man, Jackson said. Constand testified at trial that she did not know who Marguerite Jackson was. The jurors began deliberations late Monday and resumed weighing the charges against Cosby, 79, the following morning. Jewish groups pleads guilty A former journalist charged with calling in bomb threats to Jewish centers as part of a plot to get revenge on his exgirlfriend pleaded guilty Tuesday to cyberstalking and making hoax threats. Juan Thompson, 32, entered his plea before U.S. District Judge Kevin Castel in Manhattan federal court. Showing little emotion, Thompson admitted that starting in 2016, he sent emails and faxes to his former romantic partner’s employer containing false and salacious claims, and sent bomb threats to community centers, for which he tried to frame her. “I committed all of these acts with the intent to disrupt my ex-romantic partner’s life and cause her great distress,” he said. “For

Thompson was arrested in St. Louis, Missouri, on March 3, and has been in custody since then, charged with one count of cyberstalking. A second count of making hoax bomb threats was added in a superseding criminal information revealed on Tuesday. Federal prosecutors said Thompson engaged in a vicious, monthslong harassment campaign against his ex-girlfriend, using various email accounts to accuse her of possessing child pornography, driving drunk and, finally, making bomb threats targeting Jewish groups. High-level US visit leads North Korea to free student in coma Otto Warmbier, an American university student held prisoner in North Korea for 17 months and said by his family to be in a coma, has been medically evacuated from the reclusive country after a rare visit there from a high-level U.S. official. Warmbier, 22, a University of Virginia student from suburban Cincinnati, was on his way back to the United States on Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said. The release came after Joseph Yun, the State Department’s special envoy on North Korea, traveled to Pyongyang and demanded his freedom on “humanitarian grounds, capping a flurry of secret diplomatic contacts, a U.S. official said. Warmbier was detained in January 2016 and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in March last year for trying to steal an item with a propaganda slogan, according to North Korean media. A spokeswoman at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center said Warmbier would be treated there. The family said it was told by North Korean officials, through contacts with American envoys, that Warmbier fell ill from botulism sometime after his March 2016 trial and lapsed into a coma after taking a sleeping pill, the Washington Post reported. RETAIL Upscale Neiman Marcus shelves plans for a sale Upscale retailer Neiman Marcus Group said it had terminated any talks regarding a partial or full sale of the company, nearly three months after embarking on a plan seeking strategic alternatives. The news comes days after the Wall Street Journal reported that talks between Saks Fifth Avenue owner Hudson’s Bay Co. and Neiman Marcus regarding a potential combination had stalled.
“While looking ahead, we know challenges remain, but we are encouraged by the strategies we have in place to improve our operational eďŹƒciencies and performance,â€? Chief Executive Karen Katz said on a postearnings call. Neiman, struggling to seek relief from a swelling debt load, hired investment bank Lazard Ltd. to bolster its balance sheet, Reuters reported in March, as the company continued to struggle with lackluster demand
in the face of sti competition from Amazon.com Inc. and fastfashion retailers such as H&M and Zara. Much of Neiman Marcus’ debt load stems from its $6 billion leveraged buyout in 2013, when its current owners, Ares Management LP and Canadian public pension fund CPPIB, acquired it from other private equity ďŹ rms. Neiman Marcus had total liabilities of $6.4 billion, including $1.2 billion of deferred
income taxes according to its latest annual ďŹ ling. The company on Tuesday reported its fourth straight quarterly loss, and posted a nearly 5 percent dip in samestore sales for the third quarter ending April 29. Retailers have struggled to cope with changes in consumer tastes as shoppers increasingly shop online or spend on travel and big-ticket home improvement items and less on apparel and accessories. Georgia police hunt escaped inmates after two guards are killed Police in Georgia were searching Tuesday for two armed inmates who escaped from a prison transport after overpowering and disarming their guards, both of whom were shot dead, authorities said. The guards were transporting prisoners at 5:45 a.m. in Putnam County, about 70 miles southeast of Atlanta, when inmates Donnie Rowe, 43, and Ricky Dubose, 24, disarmed them, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. One of the inmates shot and killed both officers, police said, adding that Rowe and Dubose are believed to be armed with the officers’ .40-caliber Glock pistols. After killing the guards, the inmates
approached a dark green Honda Civic that was stopped nearby and demanded the driver give them the car, Putnam County Sheriff spokeswoman Teresa Slade said. “This guy happened to be driving up at the wrong time, Slade said of the motorist, adding that he was not injured during the carjacking. The Georgia Department of Corrections said both slain officers worked at Baldwin State Prison in Hardwick, Georgia. It named them as Curtis Billue, who joined the department in 2007, and Christopher Monica, who was hired in 2009. Rowe had been in Baldwin State Prison since June 2002 serving

CRIME Baltimore to ood streets with police after rash of killings Baltimore police will put more oďŹƒcers on the street to battle a surge in killings that included six homicides in seven hours this week, part of a wave of deadly violence not seen in the port city in years, authorities said on Tuesday. Patrol oďŹƒcers and detectives will go on 12-hour shifts through the weekend, instead of the normal 10-hour stints, and all other oďŹƒcers will be placed in squad cars or on foot patrols, Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said. The six homicides raised the number of killings in the city of 620,000 people to 158 for the year. The pace is 27 percent ahead of that in 2015, when Baltimore notched its second-highest number of homicides this century, according to police ďŹ gures. “We’re just as angry and frustrated and ticked o about it as anyone else watching, and I expect people to be upset,â€? Davis said at a news conference. The police commissioner said Baltimore was facing a
lethal combination of drugs, guns and gangs as crime groups battled for turf. OďŹƒcers this month seized 66 pounds of the opioid fentanyl and 15 kg (33 pounds) of heroin bound for West Baltimore, one of the deadliest gang battlegrounds, he said. The overnight violence on Tuesday included a woman gunned down by a masked shooter and two people fatally shot in an apparent drug dispute, Davis said. The East Coast city has increased coverage by oďŹƒcers during prior spikes in violence. Davis, who did not specify how many more oďŹƒcers would be on the streets, said oďŹƒcials would evaluate the eort’s results next week. The violence comes as the Baltimore police department, the nation’s eighth biggest, is under a federal court order to remedy widespread civil rights abuses uncovered by a U.S. Justice Department review. The review was triggered by the 2015 death of a suspect from injuries in police custody that sparked arson and rioting. REUTERS

The ‘Bachelor in Paradise’ story gets worse On Monday, news broke that production on “Bachelor in Paradise” had been halted after accusations of sexual misconduct came out. Now, more disturbing details are arising — with one contestant saying she did not consent to the filmed sexual encounter. Contestant Corinne Olympios says she was blacked out when things got sexual with
“The Bachelorette” alum DeMario Jackson. And according to TMZ, she blames the producers for not pulling the plug and protecting her. Apparently, after the alleged swimming-pool incident — which saw what TMZ delicately calls “intense rubbing” and a series of sex acts, but not actual intercourse between Corinne and DeMario — fel-
low cast members began telling Corinne about what happened with DeMario, and that they had voiced concern to producers. Corinne says she remembers nothing. This is messed up on so many levels. Here’s hoping Corinne isn’t simply seen as a girl who was asking for it — because no matter what, women are never “just asking for it.”

Julia Stiles is having a baby! You may remember Julia Stiles from such influential, groundbreaking films as “10 Things I Hate About You” or “Save the Last Dance.” She was also in some of those “Bourne” movies, but I like to remember her when she was at her prime — as a modern day so-called shrew making out with Heath Ledger; or as a ballet dancer who chooses hip-hop and interracial love over weekly therapy and hanging out with
Kerry Washington. Anyway, Stiles is 36 years old now. My, how time flies! Oh, and she’s got a gut full of baby. That’s right: She’s pregnant! People broke the news first, reporting that
Stiles and her fiance, Preston J. Cook, will welcome their first child later this year. The couple met on the set of the 2015 film “Go With Me,” where Cook worked as a camera assistant. Also? They’ve been engaged since Christmas Eve 2015 and they’re like, in no rush to get married or whatever. Once again, bravo to those citizens brave enough to have a baby under Trump’s rule. So brave. Couldn’t be me!

Kris Jenner is worried sick about her grandchildren on a “hot” date night over the weekend. Ugh. The “Rough Night” star and Jost enjoyed drinks in Manhattan — Johansson downed a couple of Manhattans, atta girl! And Jost ordered a single speciality cocktail. I totally see Colin Jost as a dude who orders a singular house cocktail. Typical. They were also “nice” and “holding hands” according to a spy. Sounds special. I mean, if Johansson and Jost are holding hands while dining, things are probably pretty serious. I personally wouldn’t let someone’s sweaty palm get in the way of a good meal — but hey! That’s just me. But good luck to these two, I guess? I mean, I’m not convinced this isn’t some sort of elaborate ruse, but still.

And I worry, I do, because it is such a bullying environment.”
“Haters are gonna hate.”
Kristen Mary Jenner just spends her nights a-worrying about her family. The KardashianJenner matriarch, you see, is specifically concerned that her grandchildren will be bullied because of their great burden of riches and fame. Kris sat down with

Mary Steenburgen has worked with some of the world’s most serious filmmakers. But she also has a thing for jokesters, like Will Ferrell (“Elf, “Step Brothers) and Will Forte (on TV’s “The Last Man on Earth, recently renewed for a fourth season). comedy is used seriously. That’s what happens in “Dean. It revolves around Martin’s title character — an artist whose mom has just died, leaving him and his father (Kevin Kline) devastated. Unsure how to deal, Dean whimsically decides to fly to L.A., where he gets involved with a woman (Gillian Jacobs). Meanwhile, his dad finds himself drawn to someone else, too: a real estate agent played
by Steenburgen. For Steenburgen, the material hit close to home. It made her think of when her own dad died, when she was 35. “That seems like you’d be old enough to deal with it,â€? she explains. “But I was going through a divorce and I had two little kids. Talking to Steenburgen about some of the great, funny men in her life inevitably leads us to talk about Jonathan Demme, the ďŹ lmmaker who directed her Oscar-winning performance in 1980’s “Melvin and Howard,â€? and who cast her again in 1993’s “Philadelphia.â€? Like most people who knew him, Steenburgen gushes about Demme’s warmth, his love of people, his silly sense of humor. “He was soulful. No surprise he made ďŹ lms about music, because he had a very musical soul,â€? she says. “He loved women. Steenburgen says she loves movies and TV that deal with pain in humorous ways. She feels “Deanâ€? is similar to “The Last Man on Earth,â€? in which she plays Gail, a former restaurateur trying to eke by after the apocalypse. The powerful Latinas of ‘Orange Is the New Black’ This season of “Orange Is the New Blackâ€? is the most intense yet. The entire plot takes place over the course of three chaotic days in Litchfield Prison, and the series is going bigger than ever. We sat down with Dascha Polanco (Daya), as well as Selenis Leyva (Gloria) and Jackie Cruz (“La Flacaâ€?) to talk about what they’ve learned from the series, politics in prison and the powerful side of Latinas on television. So many stars of this show are powerful Latinas. How do you think that has changed television? Jackie Cruz: I think it started with our show, because we were the first ones. People saw how powerful Latinas could be in a role. Selenis Leyva: Netflix is breaking down barriers.
Women in leading roles is something that goes way beyond what Hollywood is used to doing. Do you feel a responsibility in telling these stories that have to do with politics and society? Dascha Polanco: The writers have been able to touch on these issues in an indirect way. Being able to be a Latina right now, outside of statistics and stereotypes, is very important — not falling into the negative.
We’re part of the United States’ DNA. What have you learned from the prison universe? JC: I feel like each season educates us a little more about the life these women live, and how corrupt and manipulative that world can become. SL: Life can become really political in prison. How do you do not let it aect you o-set? SL: You never know when something is going to affect you and how. There were some scenes that were difficult for me and affected me a lot — so much so that even when I got home I had to avoid certain subjects. Did you ever imagine that you would have so much success? SL: We never imagined it. Now, we’re recognizable, so we’ve been able to take advantage to help different causes. Living on the eastern edge of Passyunk — Google calls this South Philly neighborhood “Wharton,â€? but I don’t

Blount ‘can’t compare’ Wentz to Brady Two-time Super Bowl champion LeGarrette Blount has the most Super Bowl rings of any Eagles player. EVAN MACY @evan_macy
evan.macy@metro.us
LeGarrette Blount got his Super Bowl ring Friday, his second as a Patriot. Blount has the most Super Bowl rings of any Eagles player, with Chris Long (also with Patriots), Chris Maragos (Seahawks in 2014), Torrey Smith (Ravens in 2013) and Malcolm Jenkins and Patrick Robinson (Saints in 2010) being the players with one. How will that play in the Eagles locker room? “You want to experience winning on any team,” Blount said after mandatory minicamp practice Tuesday when asked if he was as motivated to win a third.
LeGarrette Blount could get worked as the Eagles’ featured running back next season.
“You want to experience winning in pickup basketball. As a competitor you never want to lose whether it’s playing video games or in the NFL.” Blount says he hasn’t worn the ring since officially getting the hardware this past weekend,
one.” One of the main reasons Blount and the Patriots were successful — obviously — was Tom Brady, who now has five rings himself. Blount will be playing with a young and unproven quarterback in
and says he doesn’t intend to use it to motivate his teammates this season in Philly. “I feel like they are pretty motivated themselves,” Blount said with a chuckle. “I don’t think they need to see my ring to get motivated to win

2017, in stark contrast to the near 40-year-old wily veteran he lined up behind in New England. How do the two measure up? “This is Carson’s second year, this is Tom’s whatever year it is,” Blount said. “You can’t
really compare the two. He’s a rising star in this league, he’s going to continue to rise, he’s going to be really good at some point. “I feel like he’s a leader. Any quarterback you get on your team you want him to lead the team and be a franchise guy. He has to have the mindset he has to have the skill set to lead.” As opposed to the Patriots’ perennial contention in the AFC East, the Eagles haven’t made the playoffs since 2013, and haven’t won a playoff game since 2008. It will be a completely different experience as Blount and the Birds grind and battle in an evenlymatched division for a playoff spot. “Obviously you can’t predict the future,” he said. “You can’t see things that far ahead of time. We are going to keep grinding and keep working we definitely want to improve our record from last year.”

Haseley’s college coach thinks Phillies’ first-rounder will make majors quickly The Phillies’ eighth overall pick, Adam Haseley, already has big-league potential, according to Brian O’Connor. KYLE PHILLIPPI @Kyle_Phillippi sports@metro.us
Brian O’Connor has seen plenty of talent come through the ranks at the University of Virginia since taking over in 2004. He saw Ryan Zimmerman and Mark Reynolds before they became stars at the next level, and he’ll be the first to tell you that the Phillies firstround pick on Monday,
Adam Haseley, is right there with those guys. “As far as performance in the ACC and for the University of Virginia, Adam is right up there as far as how he performed for us and his development as a player,” O’Connor said over the phone. “I think he’s a guy that hopefully it doesn’t take too long to get to the major leagues. He’s a guy that can play there for a long time. “I think the sky is the limit for him.” O’Connor made an interesting point when discussing how Haseley will fare when making the jump to his likely destination in Lakewood (A). Since Haseley was a two-

way player for Virginia, having played both center field and pitcher, he never worked out with the position players, instead using the workout regimen of the pitchers. Basically, he wasn’t doing the heavy lifting that his fellow outfielders were doing. That, though, will change as he finally transitions to a full-time position player who can now amp up his workouts. “He’s going to get a lot stronger because he’s been a two-way player for us,” O’Connor said, noting how he only lifted with the pitchers. “Now that he’s able to transition and just be a position player, I think
The Phillies are hoping a safe, established college bat can make a near-immediate impact on their franchise.
he can physically get a lot stronger, which can really enhance his game.” That really ups the ante for Haseley, who
already made tremendous strides in his power numbers as a junior, belting 14 homers with 56 RBIs in 58 games. Imagine him concentrating more on strength-building as opposed to the endurance and flexibility that pitchers focus more on? O’Connor recalls about a quarter of the way into this past season, seeing how Haseley had hit seven home runs with six of those going the opposite way. It was then that he realized just how far along he had come. “When he started to do it on a consistent basis, I was like ‘All right, he now has taken a step to where he can do this at a very high level,’” O’Connor said. So how fast will Hase-

ley rise through the ranks? That’ll fall on his shoulders now, but if O’Connor has learned anything about the once highly touted high school prospect, it’s that he’s as focused as any player as he’s ever seen, even including the likes of Zimmerman and Reynolds. “This guy’s poise, his ability to handle big situations, to handle one at-bat to the next, is really advanced,” O’Connor said. “For somebody to move through the minor leagues and ultimately have success at the highest level, I think those are skills you have to have … there’s no doubt to what he has to do, he has a lot of conviction in what he has to do to be successful.”
