MACRON WINS STRONG PARLIAMENT MAJORITY

1

President Emmanuel Macron won a commanding majority in France’s parliamentary election on Sunday, sweeping aside traditional parties and securing a powerful mandate for pro-business reforms. The result, based on official figures and pollster projections, redraws France’s political landscape, humiliating the Socialist and conservative parties that alternated in power

for decades until Macron’s election in May. Three pollsters projected that Macron’s Republic on the Move (LREM) and its Modem allies would win 355 to 365 seats in the 577-seat lower house, fewer than previously forecast. Voter turnout was projected to be a record low at about 42 percent. REUTERS

MEDIA: CLARKE RESCINDS US WARPLANE SHOOTS HOMELAND SECURITY JOB DOWN SYRIAN JET

2

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, an AfricanAmerican who became a staunch critic of the Black Lives Matter movement and a supporter of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, has withdrawn his acceptance for a job as assistant secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, newspapers reported. Clarke notified Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly of his decision, Craig Peterson,

an adviser to Clarke, said in a statement, according to the Washington Post and other newspapers. “Sheriff Clarke is 100 percent committed to the success of President Trump and believes his skills could be better utilized to promote the president’s agenda in a more aggressive role,” the newspapers quoted Peterson as saying Neither the agency nor Clarke’s office immediately responded to requests for comment. A U.S. warplane shot down a Syrian army jet on Sunday in the southern Raqqa countryside with Washington saying the jet had dropped bombs near U.S. backed forces and Damascus saying the plane was downed while flying a mission against Islamic State militants. A Syrian army statement released on Syrian state television said the plane crashed and the pilot was missing. It

said the incident took place on Sunday afternoon near a village called Rasafah. The “flagrant attack was an attempt to undermine the efforts of the army as the only effective force capable with its allies ... in fighting terrorism across its territory,” the Syrian army said. REUTERS

PORTUGAL FOREST FIRE

Portugal declared three days of national mourning from Sunday after the most deadly forest fire in its recent history, raging through the center of the country. The fire, which broke out on Saturday in the Pedrogao Grande district, had killed at least 62 people and injured more than 50, according to the latest official update by Sunday afternoon. REUTERS

AMAZON ON COLLISION COURSE WITH WAL-MART

5

When Wal-Mart Stores Inc. bought online retailer Jet. com for $3 billion last year, it marked a crucial moment — the world’s largest brick-andmortar retailer, after years of ceding e-commerce leadership to arch rival Amazon, intended to compete. On Friday, Amazon. com Inc. countered. With its $14 billion purchase of grocery chain Whole Foods Market Inc., the e-commerce company announced its intention to take on Wal-Mart

in the brick-and-mortar world. The two deals make it clear that the lines that divided traditional retail from e-commerce are disappearing and sector dominance will no longer be bound by e-commerce or brick-and-mortar, but by who is better at both. Amazon’s purchase of Whole Foods also brings disruption to the $700 billion U.S. grocery sector, a traditional area of retailing that stands on the precipice of a ferocious price war. REUTERS

Why the higher Massachusetts unemployment rate isn’t bad news The state’s unemployment rate rose to 4.2 percent, just under the national rate of 4.3 percent. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

kristin.toussaint@metro.us

At the beginning of the year, Massachusetts’ unemployment rate was around the lowest it’s been in more than 15 years, with a 3.2 percent rate in January â€” well below the nation’s 4.8 percent at that time. About halfway through 2017, however, the state unemployment rate has risen to 4.2 percent, just under the national 4.3 figure, according to the most recent report. Still, there’s no cause for concern, economists say. In fact, the increase in the unemployment rate points to more good than harm. That’s because of the way that the rate is calculated, explained Brigitte Madrian, an economics and public policy professor at Harvard Kennedy School. In Massachusetts, both the current labor force and the number of unemployed people have grown. These numbers go into the fraction that de-

Massachusetts’ higher unemployment rate means that more people are trying to enter the workforce, economists say. GETTY IMAGES

termines the unemployment rate. But you also have to look at another number that Madrian said often gets less attention: the number of people actually employed. This has also been increasing month over month. “We worry more about an increase in unemployment when it’s driven by

people who had jobs and are losing them, she said. “That doesn’t appear to be what’s going on in the case of Massachusetts. Nearly 3,000 jobs were added in May at the same time that the unemployment rate rose to 4.2 percent. What’s happening is that more people are trying to enter the workforce who previously were not

counted among the unemployed. “The increase in the unemployment rate isn’t being driven by people who had jobs and are losing them, Madrian said. “It’s being driven by people who weren’t previously working, deciding that the economy is now in good enough shape that it might be a good time to

start looking for a job. Those people who weren’t previously working were not factored into the number of unemployed before. But not that they’re trying to get jobs, they are. We don’t yet know a lot about those people just now entering the workforce, but Madrian had a few guesses about who they may be.

It could be a secondary earner, with an employed spouse, who dropped out of the labor market when they couldn’t find work, she said. Now that the economy is better, they jump back in, Madrian said, but it can take weeks or months for them to get a jump, meaning the unemployed rate goes up. It could also be due to the students, Madrian speculated, who recently graduated from the many Massachusetts colleges. “In the past, they would have gone back to their home state to try to find a job, but now that the economy is doing a little bit better, maybe more of them are sticking around in the area, she said. The gap between Massachusetts’ unemployment rate and the nation’s has also been shrinking. Massachusetts was doing “much better than the rest of the country just months ago, Madrian said, because it wasn’t hit as hard by the recession. “So it makes sense that as the rest of the country is coming out of the recession, she said, “the difference between Massachusetts and everywhere else is going to get narrower, and that’s what we’re seeing.

TRUMP’S AMERICA

TRUMP’S AMERICA: LAWYER UP, LAWYER DOWN OPINION

ELLIS HENICAN

@henican

Donald Trump says he is under investigation. Donald Trump’s lawyer says, no, he isn’t. Oh, great! This early in the Russian-hacking probe, we’ve already hit the moment where the president starts twisting the meaning of “is” and “isn’t.” Back in the 1990s, the Monica Lewinsky decade, that took years for Bill Clinton to get around to. Trump’s momentous assertion came in a tweet, of course. That’s how most of his momentous assertions arrive. He picked up his phone at 9:08 Friday morning — Trump Daylight Time — and started typing: “I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch Hunt.” We can debate whether Deputy Attorney General Ron Rosenstein deserves the dis. Was he really the one who got the jumpy president to oust FBI Director James Comey? Trump made that bright move all by himself, he told NBC’s Lester Holt. But after the tweet, can there be any doubt that the Russia-coddling prez is now squarely in the sights of special counsel Robert Mueller? Sure, there can be. We’re in Trumpville now. Where “is” and “isn’t”

are often fluid concepts. Where words don’t always mean what they say. Where today’s presidential assertions are tomorrow’s fake news. So yesterday, here was one of the president’s new lawyers, Jay Sekulow, telling Chris Wallace on “Fox News Sunday” that “the president is not and has not been under investigation.” Saying he wanted to be “crystal clear” that Trump’s legal team is “not aware of any investigation.” Added the lawyer: “The tweet came on the heels of a Washington Post story that had five anonymous sources.” “Oh, boy, this is weird,” Wallace finally shot back after several rounds of “is” and “isn’t” back-and-forth. “You don’t know whether there’s an investigation.” So, what do we know? As the lawyer and president struggle to get their stories straight, Democrat Adam Schiff of the House Intelligence Committee warned that the special counsel is “only getting started.” Senate Intel’s Angus King said he figures the various probes are “20 percent” done. There is one thing we know for certain, however far along we are: Mueller isn’t close to finished, whatever the meaning of is is. New marijuana bill planned for Monday The House is expected to debate and possibly vote on the redrafted bill on Wednesday. After tepid support and a procedural snafu forced House leadership to pull the rewrite of the marijuana legalization law from consideration last week, the Marijuana Policy Committee is planning to release a redrafted version of the legislation Monday with debate expected in the House on Wednesday, according to the House committee chair. Rep. Mark Cusack told the News Service he and his staff have been working around the clock to rectify issues with the bill (H 3751) the committee released Wednesday and that the committee has scheduled an executive session for noon on Monday to vote on a new bill. “With a bill of this magnitude and an issue of this import, it deserves

100 percent focus and all of our energy so we can get this right, the Braintree Democrat said Thursday night from his State House office. “We’re trying to do a good bill but also being mindful that we can’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good with the four months we’ve had. We have a good bill, a solid bill, a workable bill for the commonwealth, for the consumers and for the industry. In addition to postponing until this week debate on its marijuana law rewrite, the House on Wednesday sent the Marijuana Policy Committee’s bill to the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing. House officials confirmed Thursday that the leadership-backed bill was indeed sent to Health Care Financing. Rep. Jeffrey Sanchez, the House co-chair of the Health Care Financing Committee, did not return phone calls from the News Service on Thursday afternoon. Cusack said

The new bill will also fix an error in drafting that meant the bill released Wednesday actually called for a compounded tax — meaning the 16.75 percent and 5 percent taxes would be levied when the cultivator sells to the retailer and again when the retailer sells to the consumer — making the total tax rate on marijuana purchases as high as 55 percent for some items and as high as 80 percent for some manufactured products like edibles. Cusack said the intent of the legislation is to cap the effective tax rate at 28 percent and levy it only at the point of sale. Senate President Stanley Rosenberg said the most important issue for the committee to focus on is the governance model for the cannabis industry, and that other things like the tax rate and dealing with the agricultural aspects of legal cannabis can be dealt with once the governance structure is in place. Joel Kinnaman would rather have Berlusconi than Trump The charming Swede talks “House of Cards,” Trump and “Suicide Squad.”

I would rather have Berlusconi than President Trump. Would you compare Trump to Underwood? I would take Underwood any day of the week! President Underwood isn’t going start a nuclear war because someone tweeted at him in the wrong way.

JANA POLLACK @tinyjana letters@metro.us

If you haven’t binged the fifth season of “House Of Cards” yet, what are you even doing? The show came back with a vengeance this year — and its usual brand of ruthless politics suddenly hit very close to home. One of the only mostly good guys around was Frank Underwood’s young, hot, Republican rival, Will Conway. “I’m drawn to interesting characters,” says actor Joel Kinnaman, who plays Will. “I want to have a character that has a journey, that really evolves.” We sat down with the very charming Swede to find out what the man behind the failed candidate really thinks. What was it like doing

and conversation. I think there’s a lot of people who feel that we’re in the middle of a complete crisis — our national identity is being hijacked. It’s very saddening to see what’s going on, that America’s standing in the world is getting weakened, and that we’re losing the leadership role when it comes to the environment and to human rights.

And to think that anyone was going to rival President Underwood’s (Kevin Spacey) unlikeability, and the level of distrust from the public would rise to this kind of level, I didn’t think was going to be possible. I was saying before the election, that if Trump gets elected, we’re all going to know what it was like to be the Italians under Berlusconi. I think

Now that TV’s in this golden age do you look more to TV, or is film more your goal? There’s still something really magical with doing a film — every scene is such an important piece of the character’s journey, and almost every scene is moving the character forward. And in TV, you really get time to go deep, and to have that slow evolution, and you have much more time to play as well, so you get into the character even more. But I really like doing both, I really like to mix it up. Is it true that you’re

filming “Suicide Squad 2” soon? No, I don’t know when that’s coming out — the only thing I know is that they’re working on a script. How do you think Wonder Woman would fare against the Suicide Squad? [Laughs] Well, we’d definitely give her a run for her money. I just saw it, I loved it. It’s so good. I was actually really moved thinking about all those little girls going to the movies and seeing this film, and to think of how it’s going to change the way that they see themselves in the world. And I’m so happy for my girl Patty Jenkins — Patty directed the pilot of “The Killing,” and also the final episode of the second season, so I was so happy to see that she did such a good film. Do you have any regrets about your Squad tattoo? [Laughs] No regrets.

Armie Hammer on parenting in the age of smartphones The actor talks “Cars 3” and how Pixar knows how to speak to kids and adults. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Armie Hammer just went to Disneyland. It was partly for work — he was doing press for “Cars 3,” in which he voices superfast race car (and villain) Jackson Storm — but even when he got time to bop around the park, he couldn’t do all the rides. That’s because his kids are young: His daughter is 2½ and his son was born earlier this year. Not that the actor would be at an amusement park by himself. After all, he is 30 years old. “I haven’t been on a roller coaster in 18 years,” Hammer remarks. But when you have kids, you get to do all the things you did as a kid once again. Usually that

involves playing teacher to his kids. “It’s a lot of fun watching them process and learn and figure things out. You get to go learn everything all over again,” Hammer tells us. Sometimes he draws a blank. “She’ll definitely catch me off-guard and say, ‘Why this? Why that?’ I’ll just say, ‘Well, I don’t k n o w . Let’s figure it out!’ Then I reach into my pocket and take out a device that has the cumula-

nal Animals,” “Free Fire.” If Hammer needs to do movies his children can watch, he’s smart to do one with Pixar known for tackling heavy, even depressing issues — aging, abandonment, death — yet in a way kids greatly enjoy. “That’s what they do so well: They take big issues but deal with them so lightheartedly that my 2½-year-old daughter can watch them and be en-

thralled the whole time,” Hammer says. Still, what on earth do they make of “Inside Out,” which is all about that moment when kids realize that the world can be a dark and miserable place? Hammer knows that stuff goes over their heads. But that’s fine. “When they get older they can go back and watch them with a new perspective,” Hammer explains. “There’s some-

thing for everyone. The older they get, the more sides they see.” Hammer doesn’t allow his daughter to watch too many movies at her age. “We don’t really let her get too much screen time. She has a fake iPhone that she’s able to use, because she sees us using ours a lot,” he says. Still, he doesn’t want her to go completely without technology. “I have people warn me, ‘Oh, you don’t want her to have too much screen time.’ But I realized there’s not really a world my daughter and son will live in where they don’t interact in some way with a screen or some kind of digital technology on a day-to-day basis,” he says. “If I limit her screen time now, am I setting her back? Or if I give her controlled and monitored screen time now, in a productive way, am I helping her? It’s less of a black-and-white issue than ‘Screen time for kids is bad.’”

award-winning culinary techniques to Chatham this summer. The James Beard award winner behind locals favorites such as Rialto, Trade, Porto and Saloniki teams up with Chatham Bars Inn for a summer pop-up experience that kicks off this month, and runs through the end of October. Adams hopes the special menu will showcase a fusion of her Mediterranean style with traditional New England flavors and ingredients, sourced locally from the resort’s proprietary farm as well as the nearby Chatham fish pier. “[We’re] taking clams, oysters, scallops, fluke and all of the things that come out of the waters right here and giving them a Mediterranean dressing, if you will, she says. “In Italy, south of France and places like that, the ingredients really shine through. The flavor comes from olive oil, citrus, herbs, garlic and a little bit of mustard here and there, some yogurt. But it’s not complicated flavors and it’s not manipulated in strange ways. Adams and her Chatham Bars Inn partners want diners to have a more casual experience

with the pop-up, which is why they’re encouraging guests to “loosen their tiesâ€? as they munch on the Mediterranean-meetsNew-England-fare. Menu items include hot grilled oysters made with nasturtium-garlic butter and horseradish deviled eggs; scallop crudo accompanied by whipped lemon yogurt, melon cukes and turmeric-ginger honey; and steamed lobster poached in crème fraĂŽche with cured olives and bronze fennel. Non-seafood dishes range from lemon balm roast chicken with basil mashed potatoes and beefsteak tomatoes to a grilled rack of lamb made with mint chutney, Hakurei turnips and various fried herbs. “We really want people to relax a little bit, bring the feeling of the Mediterranean here,â€? Adams says. “When you’re at the beach, you’re not in a suit and tie. It doesn’t mean that you come into the dining room in flip flops and cut-off jeans, but come in and just sit down, relax and have a really good time. The food is not going to make you stand up and salute. It’s going to make you want to sort of fall into it.â€? The partnership with

the upscale, beachside resort came about after Adams worked with Chatham Bars Inn for an event benefiting the nonprofit Future Chefs. The former “Top Chefs Masters competitor was impressed by the property, as well as executive chef Anthony Cole and his team, so she was eager to partner with the Cape Cod institution after being approached by their director of food and beverage John Collings. “It’s an incredible property with a really warm feeling of a place where you really want to be, Adams says. “The farm is just amazing. Working in a hotel like this that has a farm, that has access to these incredible vegetables, but also the water is right there. You can see the fishing boats come in, so it’s sort of a dream in terms of an environment to be in. The celebrated chef, who hails from New England and has spent a lot of time on the Cape in places like Barnstable, is excited to see the evolution of the area’s fine dining scene. “I think it’s growing in a really nice, organic way, says Adams. “I’m excited to be a part of that.

HOW TO GET AHEAD

The ultimate tips for GRE success

&

jobs education

Test takers should be extremely cautious with their time. ISTOCK

Ace the exam with these test-day strategies. SARA FEINSTEIN @SaraBFeinstein

sara.feinstein@metro.us

If the standard classroom exam wasn’t stressful enough, try to stomach the GRE — a test that will help determine which graduate schools a student can get into. But the process doesn’t have to anxietyinducing. We spoke with John Fulmer, national content director for the GMAT and GRE at the Princeton Review for some tactics to help students take on the test with confidence.

Get the easy points first In the GRE, questions aren’t arranged in order of difficulty. “Question five might be significantly harder than question six, and so one of the things that works really well is trying to tackle the easy questions first.” If you understand the concept, and think you can answer the problem in a reasonable amount

of time, then go for it, says the expert. But if something seems automatically tricky— say, a math equation that requires using a formula you never learned— it’s important to simply skip it and move on. At the end of the day, “it’s really all about building up as many points as you possibly can,” explains Fulmer.

Make use of the scrap paper Test-takers have a bad habit of trying to solve problems in their head, says Fulmer. And while it might seem like a time-efficient strategy, it’s often more harmful than helpful. Without any setup work to refer to, “there’s no way to trace what you may have done wrong [in an equation], and you actually wind up taking more time than if you had just gotten into the habit of writing things down,” says Fulmer. And that doesn’t mean students should jot down their work for just math problems. “Even for reading comprehension, doing something as simple as writing down a,b,c,d,e for the answer choices and crossing them off, as

you decide that they’re wrong can really be a big time saver.”

Reread the questions

“The GRE makes problems hard in a lot of different ways,” says Fulmer. It may trot out a rule that not many people know, add some extra steps to an equation or include an obvious-looking answer choice that turns out to be wrong— and that’s only a few of the tricky maneuvers. Sometimes questions are worded in a way that makes them easy to misinterpret, he explains. So how can test takers avoid falling into these hidden traps? By “making sure they get into the habit of rereading the question before picking an answer,” says Fulmer. If you’re solving a geometry question, don’t automatically assume that you’ll need to find the area of the figure. That’s what the testmakers want you to do, “and sure enough, there is going to be an answer choice that gives the area,” he explains. Your job is to get rid of those preconceived notions and instead focus on what’s on the page.

JOBS OF THE FUTURE

Mechanical engineers take design to the next level pursuing the profession need to earn a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, says Kabir. While it’s possible to find a job with an undergraduate degree, those who are looking to specialize — for example, robotics, nuclear energy, biomedical engineering, or aerospace — may choose to enroll in a masters program.

These experts are the “jack-of-all-trades.” SARA FEINSTEIN @SaraBFeinstein

sara.feinstein@metro.us

When people think of mechanical engineers, they tend to envision a sort of handyman. “They think that you’re also a mechanic, and that you want to fix anything that’s broken— especially cars and computers,” explains mechanical engineer Israr Kabir. But that’s not really what the job entails. While “fixing” is certainly an aspect of the job, these experts are actually responsible for designing and overseeing the manufacturing of products ranging

from auto parts to cellphones. They get to research, build and test new devices using some of the most advanced technology. We spoke with Israr Kabir, business development manager, manufacturing, at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers to find out more about the profession:

What does a mechanical engineer do? “Mechanical engineers are the jack-of-alltrades,” says Kabir. Not only do they research, design and build products, they also analyze and test the individual parts. What’s the typical salary? The median annual salary for mechanical engineers is $84,190, according to the most recent reports by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The best-paid 10 percent in the profession made more than $131,350, while the lowest-paid 10 percent made $54,420. Finding employment While everyone continues to panic about robots stealing their jobs, mechanical engineers can rest easy. “We’d actually be designing and building that robot,

if you think about it,” says Kabir. “Because of the level of thought required — there’s a lot of in-depth thinking from a technical and mathematical standpoint— it’s not really a job that could be easily automated.” Plus, “companies are always looking for mechanical engineers,” he continues. Those entering the field have their pick of industries, thanks to the variety of businesses that employ mechanical engineers, such as consumer products, energy mining, and even hardware startups. The pros Mechanical engineers have one of the greatest job perks: They get to use their creativity. They also get to witness firsthand some of the cutting-edge technologies being developed, and incorporate them into their design strategy, explains Kabir. “That’s always fun.”

How to write a cover letter that actually gets read Showing personality is crucial.

Many applicants make the mistake of simply rewriting their résumé. ISTOCK

SARA FEINSTEIN @SaraBFeinstein

sara.feinstein@metro.us

For those on the job hunt, nothing can seem more daunting than writing a cover letter. But there’s no need to panic. We spoke with Alexandra Cavoulacos, founder and chief operating officer of career coaching platform the Muse, for some tips.

you something,” she says. The next step: Expand on each skillset in “show, don’t tell” manner. “Don’t just say, I can use Photoshop,” says Cavoulacos. “Even, ‘I’ve been using Photoshop for five years’ doesn’t tell me anything about how good you are at it— it just tells me that you have exposure to it.” A more strategic cover let-

ter might say: “My work with XYZ nonprofit to redevelop their logo and do a campaign, not only raised X thousand dollars for them, but also won this local award for nonprofit design,” she says. In the end, it’s all about showing the impact and the achievements that are tied to your skills, not just listing them.

Emphasize key skills

Don’t be boring Applicants should be crafting their cover letters with the purpose of building a connection with the person on the other side of the screen, says Cavoulacos. “You want somebody to finish reading it and say, ‘We have to meet with this person,’ she explains. And the best way to ensure that is by showing some personality — maybe even trying to make them laugh, says Cavoulacos. “Some

you has actually become my favorite high.” And to wrap it all up: “Getting to see my determination in action and really bringing in revenue has been a big motivator, and I’m excited to do the same for this company.” The narrative doesn’t have to be very long; it can be a paragraph or even one sentence, as long as it successfully molds your accomplishments around a storyline.

of the best openers of cover letters I’ve seen are really atypical,” she says. “Someone who’s said, ‘I loved selling since I’ve made more money on my lemonade stand than I got in allowance,’ is way more likely to get called in for an interview.”

Tell a story You should write a cover letter in the same way you would a novel: with

a clear beginning, middle and end. If someone were applying to a sales position, he or she might begin with, “When I first got into sales, I thought coldcalling would be my least favorite part,” says Cavoulacos. He could then go on and say, “Even though cold-calling — as every sales person knows— isn’t fun, that moment when you actually get them on the phone and convince them to talk to

Highlighting a set of skills that align most with the needs of the company is way more effective than running through a never-ending list of all of your accomplishments, says Cavoulacos. That often means going back to the job description and rereading the first couple bullet points. “If they mention three different times that experience with Photoshop is really important, then they’re obviously trying to tell

Celtics loading up on draft picks, likely want to trade for superstar The Celtics traded the No. 1 overall pick to Philly on Saturday. MATT BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

There’s a meme floating around the internet of the body of the “Lord of the Rings” character Gollum, sporting the head of Celtics boss Danny Ainge. Gollum/Ainge is holding on to all of his draft picks/assets in the clip and is screaming “My Precious!!!!” At this stage of things, the meme is fair. Ainge currently has more future draft picks and young players than he knows what to do with, and Celtics fans — promised off-season “fireworks” for years now — are growing impatient. If Ainge simply drafts Kansas swingman Josh Jackson in the 2017 NBA Draft on Thursday and the Celtics wind up whiffing in free agency and the trade market this summer — expect Ainge to become the biggest Boston punching bag since Bobby Valentine this coming fall and winter. Of course, it will take

several seasons to figure out who the best player in this draft is, but know this: the Celtics just passed on a sure thing by essentially trading away Markelle Fultz. Nonetheless, the timing of the Celtics’ upcoming actions will be

fascinating. A trade for Bulls guard Jimmy Butler and/or Pacers swingman Paul George would likely transpire on draft night or right before NBA free agency begins on July 1. Celtics fans would be happy seeing either of those players in green despite

neither of those players puts Boston in Cleveland — Golden State territory. But if Ainge — the definition of a go-big or go-home GM — has his sights set on the biggest young fish in the pond — the Pelicans’ Anthony Davis – then he will most

likely have to wait until the February 2018 trade deadline or even worse, the summer of 2018. The impatient Celtics crowd would surely not be happy with that, even if it might be the smartest play for the franchise to make longterm.

The Davis rumor gained a little steam in May when Celtics TV announcer Mike Gorman casually tossed out Davis’ name in a conversation about whether or not the Celtics should trade the No. 1 pick. “[Markelle] Fultz is not

The Red Sox (38-30) will continue their road trip this week in Kansas City, facing a disappointing Royals (32-35) team in a three-game set. The Sox had mixed results last week as they took three of four from the Phillies but were shutout in a Chris Sale start on Thursday. They then beat the best team in baseball in the Astros on Friday, 2-1, but fell 7-1 to Houston on Saturday. Much like the start of the season, the Boston offense again appears to be in a slump and the Sox are only as good as their starting

pitching. The Sox are currently just 14th in MLB in runs scored but are fifth in team ERA (3.91). Hector Velazquez (11, 6.48 ERA) will get the ball for the Sox Monday

night at Kansas City. Velazquez earned the win at Philly last week, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing just one

hit and one walk. Jason Hammel (3-6, 5.05 ERA) will get the ball for Kansas City. Sox ace Chris Sale (8-3, 2.82 ERA) will return to the mound on Tuesday after the toughluck loss last week, and Drew Pomeranz (6-4, 4.19 ERA) will look to make it two strong starts in a row when he takes the mound in a Wednesday matinee in KC. The Sox are off on Thursday before returning home for a threegame series against the Angels. The Sox will retire David Ortiz’s No. 34 on Friday at Fenway. MATT BURKE

Pelicans do this?” P They traded T ffor DeMarcus Cousins earC lier this year, l and they do not yet have a good sample size of whether or not a Cousins – Davis big man tag team can work. Davis is also still just 24 years old and the Pelicans have him under contract through 2021. New Orleans GM Dell Demps is no dummy, and knows full well that stars are hard to come by in the NBA. When does giving up a young, absolute stud for a treasure trove of draft picks ever work out?
