KUSHNER STARTS MIDDLE OFFICER STABBED AT EAST PEACE EFFORT MICHIGAN AIRPORT

1

President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, held talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, beginning a new U.S. effort to revive long-fractured Middle East peace efforts. Kushner, a 36-year-old real estate developer with little experience of international diplomacy or political negotiation, arrived

in Israel on Wednesday morning and will spend barely 20 hours on the ground — he leaves shortly after midnight. Video showed him giving Netanyahu, a friend of Kushner’s father, a handshake and a hug as they prepared to sit down with the Israeli ambassador to Washington, the U.S. ambassador to Israel and other senior officials for preliminary discussions.

Bishop International Airport in Flint, Michigan, was evacuated after a police officer was stabbed in the neck in what a U.S. government official familiar with the situation said was being investigated as a possible act of terrorism. All passengers were safe, the airport said in a brief statement on its Facebook page. The officer who was stabbed is Lieutenant Jeff Neville of the Bishop Inter-

national Airport Department of Public Safety, Michigan State Police spokeswoman Lori Dougovito said. Neville underwent surgery after the attack and is stable. Asked if the stabbing was under investigation as possible terrorism, the government official, who asked not be named, said yes. The officer was stabbed inside the airport’s main terminal, Michigan State Police spokesman David Kaiser said.

Uber Chief Executive Travis Kalanick, co-founder of one of the most influential technology companies of its generation, resigned under pressure from investors after a string of setbacks. Kalanick’s departure caps a tumultuous period for the world’s largest ride-services company that has revolutionized the taxi industry and challenged transportation regulations worldwide. The 40-year-old’s pugnacious style largely defined

Uber’s approach and helped it become a transportation colossus valued at $68 billion, the largest private firm backed by venture capitalists in the world. But that brashness has also been blamed for scandals this year, from the unearthing of a culture of bullying and discrimination at Uber to a U.S. Department of Justice federal investigation and a highstakes lawsuit filed by Alphabet Inc. that threatens Uber’s selfdriving car ambitions.

NYC SETTLES WITH FORMER TENNIS STAR

3

New York City agreed on Wednesday to create a new position with a watchdog agency to hear complaints against the police as part of a settlement with retired tennis star James Blake, who was roughed up by a plainclothes officer in 2015. Instead of a monetary award, the settlement creates a fellowship in Blake’s name with the Civilian Complaint Review Board to help people

with complaints against the police. The fellowship will augment the existing procedure for complaints. “It has been my intention since Day 1 to turn a negative situation into a positive and I think this fellowship accomplishes that goal,” Blake, 37, said in a joint statement with the city announcing the agreement.

A man on an Orange Line train Monday night shouted anti-Muslim slurs at a woman wearing a headscarf and made false accusations that the woman had a bomb, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office. Sean Devlin, 34, was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on Tuesday on charges of violating a person’s civil rights, making a false bomb threat and the malicious destruction of property over $250 in connection with the Monday night incident. Officials said that Devlin, who provided an address in North Reading as well as that of a Boston substanceabuse treatment facility, yelled slurs at a 61-yearold woman and said she had a bomb that would “kill us all. Devlin was on an inbound Orange Line train during the incident, which happened at around 10:45 p.m. The woman and a witness told transit police that Devlin had hit the woman in the back with an umbrella, which may result in additional

charges. He then allegedly kicked and punched a train car window until it shattered. “Behavior like this is inexcusable, Conley said in a statement. “I want to commend the MBTA passengers, personnel and others who reported and responded to it. There’s no place for hate in Boston or Suffolk County. Transit police found three small bottles of alcohol in Devlin’s pockets, according to the DA’s office, and also discovered that he had warrants for misdemeanor offenses in Woburn District Court, Somerville District Court and Lowell District Court. The judge imposed a $10,000 bail and ordered Devlin to stay away from the victim, witnesses and all MBTA transportation in the event he is released on bail. After Devlin was arrested, officers and T employees checked the train. They found “nothing unusual aside from the window that Devlin allegedly broke, officials said. Devlin is due back in court July 17.

“I want to commend the MBTA passengers, personnel and others who reported and responded to it. There’s no place for hate in Boston or Suffolk County. Daniel F. Conley

Every Boston public school to get youth homelessness liaison under new plan BPS is adopting a “hub-and-spoke” system under a $1.2 million program to help serve some 3,000 homeless students and their families. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT

About 3,000 Boston Public School students are currently experiencing homelessness, though experts believe that the number may be much higher out of the roughly 56,000 students currently enrolled, and school officials believe that figure is growing. For students like Stacy and Grisana, two Jeremiah E. Burk High School sophomores who spoke about their experiences being homeless during a panel discussion at the Youth Homelessness Prevention Forum at Boston Public School (BPS) headquarters on Tuesday, their economic situation radically affected their education. Stacy became homeless when she was 13, and was frequently in and out of shelters. Grisana became homeless last November and her fourperson family had to stay with her aunt and cousin, all cramped in a two-bedroom apartment. To Grisana, school was a refuge, a safe space, a place to escape from her home situation, though she acknowledged her experiences made it hard to focus on her education. To Stacy, it was the opposite — school was such a distraction that she would skip often. “I felt like, why should I have to go to school when I’m going through the things I’m going through?” she said. Now, both students are excelling at Burke. Lindsa McIntyre, the school’s headmaster, said that’s because she works hard to centralize the services students like Stacy and Grisana need at the school,

“to support them where they’re most comfortable.” “One of my fundamental beliefs in leading this school is to lead it from the heart and to be sure that we’re servicing the whole child, not just a child’s academic ability to achieve on a state assessment,” she said. To help other homeless students find similar success, BPS and Mayor Marty Walsh have set aside $1.2 million of the city’s fiscal 2018 budget to establish a “hub-and-spoke” model to help connect students and their families with community services. “[We need to] support schools, which serve as local ecosystems. The goal is to enhance access, better communicate and collaborate,” BPS Superintendent Tommy Chang said. An “essential” component of this effort is that each school in the system will have a point-person specifically for the issue of youth homelessness. “Every school will have a liaison; the liaison will serve as the person who collects all the resources, knows where all the resources are and can be a liaison between community partners and our students and their families,” Chang told reporters. “This is work that’s to support both the young person and their families.” Those liaisons can be someone like a teacher or guidance counselor who will be further trained to focus on homelessness, those resources available and other issues often related, such as trauma.

Building the ‘perfect’ GMO baby Who prefers a blondhaired, blue-eyed baby? Or would you create an intelligent, charismatic future politician?

participants with ethical concerns voted for kindness while 8 percent of those without qualms voted to make their child more attractive.

Many people shun GMOs — food that has been genetically modified — but what about GMO babies? A recent survey asked 500 American and 500 European parents or those who planned to be parents some day if they would genetically alter their offspring and how much money they would pay for the “perfect” child. The idea might seem unsavory to some — eugenics will forever be linked to Hitler and his crazed mission to create a “master race” — but this sort of technology isn’t too far off, considering that science has mastered cloning animals. Cloning humans successfully became less of a dream (nightmare, to some) after science figured out how to clone a human embryo to make stem cells. Designer babies aren’t ethical, but, if given the chance, would you alter your baby’s DNA to make him or her smarter,

Europeans and Americans have prioritized different qualities as being “perfect” for a child.

stronger or blue-eyed? Of those who believe genetically designing a child would be unethical, one out of five admitted they would still modify the baby for intelligence

while a third would give their child’s DNA a boost to ensure good health. Those who believe genetic alterations are morally acceptable also called intelligence and health

priorities, with 28 percent voting for an active mind, and 27 percent voting for an active immune system. Both groups would also modify creativity and weight; 7 percent of

Half of the men and half of the women agreed that intelligence is a trait they would alter, and they also agreed on the importance of creativity and kindness. Moms and dads differed when it came to other traits: One in 10 men ranked courage in their top-five preferred traits while women voted for independence and charisma. Maybe moms are hoping for their child to become POTUS. If Kanye wins 2020, let’s all just agree anything is possible. Around one in four potential moms and dads were willing to alter things like attractiveness and weight (because pizza is amazing and counting calories is the worst). Men wanted their kids to “be like Mike” and know like “Bo knows” with increased strength and athleticism, while moms preferred to dictate eye color.

Europeans versus Americans Americans and their friends across the pond agreed “bigly” on the importance of intel-

ligence, followed by creativity, but when given a list of changeable traits, Americans placed more importance on independence while Europeans opted for courage. Considering both cultures, those choices make sense; Americans value independence while Europeans are in closer proximity to other cultures and might need to call upon courage to learn and engage. Regardless of continent, a quarter of those surveyed said they would opt to alter attractiveness and weight. Americans were more concerned about athletic ability than their European counterparts.

Money is no option Men, and Americans in general, were willing to shell out quite a few clams for a smarter baby; one in four were willing to drop around $10,000 for a kid who does better in school. Women and Europeans were a bit more frugal and were only willing to fork over between $1,000 and $2,000. More than a third of all men and women surveyed agreed a health upgrade would be worth $10,000 or more.

Everything you need to know about Trump’s new lawyer Jay Sekulow President Donald Trump’s new lawyer Jay Sekulow made an inauspicious debut last Sunday, defending Trump against something he had admitted to, then admitting it twice himself. Aside from being a less-thansharp attorney, a profile of Sekulow has begun to emerge. Here are four fast facts to know. Jay Sekulow made a widely mocked debut as Trump’s lawyer this week. Making the rounds of the Sunday morning talk shows, Sekulow insisted

repeatedly that President Trump is not under criminal investigation — despite the fact that the president himself said on Twitter that he was. The reaction of CNN’s Jake Tapper became a meme. Notably, Sekulow told Fox News’ Chris Wallace twice that the president was, in fact, under investigation, before insisting that he was not, and that Wallace was putting words in his mouth. Jay Sekulow is considered unqualified to represent Trump as president. “Sekulow is not a crimi-

nal attorney,” said Josh Marshall, editor of Talking Points Memo, this month. “There is literally nothing in Sekulow’s professional background — other than perhaps simply having a law degree — which would suit him to the very specific legal task of defending a sitting president from legal jeopardy.” Jay Sekulow argued for an anti-gay agenda. Sekulow once argued against the legalization of homosexuality after the 2003 Supreme Court ruled that gay sex was not

criminal. “By providing constitutional protection to same-sex sodomy, the Supreme Court strikes a damaging blow for the traditional family that will only intensify the legal battle to protect marriage and the traditional family,” he wrote.

Jay Sekulow’s finances are sketchy. In 2011, the Tennessean reported that two religious charities Sekulow founded in the ’80s paid $33 million to “members of Sekulow’s family and businesses they own or co-own” over the

previous 13 years. One of Sekulow’s nonprofits “paid a total of $2,374,833 to purchase two homes used primarily by Sekulow and his wife,” according to the Legal Times in 2005. MICHAEL MARTIN

Fidget spinners top most dangerous toys list A consumer watchdog group released a report of potential summer dangers. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT

Fidget spinners have been lauded for their â€œtherapeuticâ€? effects, but a consumer watchdog group is warning parents that the viral gadget is one of the most dangerous toys of the summer. World Against Toys Causing Harm, Inc. (W.A.T.C.H.), a Bostonbased nonprofit, released its summer safety report on Wednesday, and it targets the popular, twirling toys. Just because a toy is popular doesn’t mean that it’s safe, said Joan Siff, president of W.A.T.C.H., who unveiled the report at a press conference at Franciscan Children’s Hospital on Wednesday. And as school lets out for the summer, families need to be aware of the potential for increases in toy-related injuries, according to the group. Fidget spinners have been a present symbol in school classrooms, but their popularity doesn’t look to dwindle as summer approaches. The gadgets have already caused multiple injuries, raising safety concerns,

piece of a fidget spinner and underwent surgery to have it removed. Also on the list as potential summer hazards are hoverboards, which have been linked to fires — and, in March, to the death of a 3-yearold whose home ignited

CEO of ‘Safr’ ride-hailing service for women arrested on embezzlement charges Safr CEO allegedly stole $2 million from the U.S. Virgin Islands government. ERIN TIERNAN

The CEO of Boston-based Safr, a ride-hailing app that provides a “saferâ€? alternative for women, was arrested last week on charges he embezzled $2 million from the U.S. Virgin Islands government. Syed Zain Gilani, 43, was arrested at the company’s Harrison Avenue headquarters on Friday and has agreed to be extradited to the Virgin Islands for his trial, The Boston Globe reported. “It’s got nothing to do with Safr whatsoever. That I can say categorically,â€? Gilani’s lawyer, Eoin Beirne told the Globe, and denied any wrongdoing on Gilani’s part. Safr launched in Boston in March with plans to expand to Washington, Chicago, LA and New York City. The company bills itself as a women-focused ride-hailing app with pre-

“Syed denies any wrongdoing. He is such a passionate believer in the Safr mission for which we are all very grateful,â€? CĂłrdova told the Globe. “We fully support him.â€?

The Virgin Islands government has accused Gilani of running a scam business for three years with two other men. Gilani’s business was supposed to implement federally mandated updates to identification cards like licenses, but Gilani and his partners allegedly just pocketed the grant money for the operation instead. All three men face one charge each of obtaining money by false pretense, conversion of government property, embezzlement by a public officer, filing false instruments, falsification of public accounts, fraudulent claims upon the government, false certificate by public officers, and criminal influenced and corrupt organizations conspiracy, according to the Globe report.

Poll: Most Americans say Republican healthcare plan will be harmful The June 9-13 poll shows that a majority of the country thinks the American Health Care Act would be harmful for low-income Americans, people with pre-existing health conditions and Medicaid recipients. REUTERS When Senate Republicans unveil their plan to overhaul America’s healthcare system, they will face a skeptical public that already does not buy the justification for an earlier version that passed the House of Representatives, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Wednesday. Overall, 41 percent of American adults oppose the House plan, while 30 percent support it. Another 29 percent said they “don’t know,” according to the poll. “It’ll make people’s deductibles skyrocket” said Shannon Sowards, 39, of Memphis, Tennessee, a Trump supporter who took the poll. “So I’m not for this healthcare act. I’m for insurance for everyone.”

Senate Republicans, who already have been criticized for drafting their bill in secret. “It would be great if a politician had the nerve to be brutally honest” and tell people that healthcare costs are going up, said Joseph Antos, a healthcare expert at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank. “None of them seem to.” For years, Republicans have promised voters they would replace Democratic former President Barack Obama’s health-

care law, which they say is too costly and intrusive. When House Republicans pitched their health plan earlier this year, House Speaker Paul Ryan boasted that it would lower premiums, protect people with pre-existing conditions and improve public “access” to highquality, low-cost healthcare. Rep. Tom MacArthur of New Jersey, who helped shape the House bill, said it “would make coverage of pre-existing conditions sacrosanct

for all Americans.” The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, however, presented a different view of the bill. It estimated that under the House plan 23 million people would lose their health coverage by 2026 in an effort to cut the federal deficit. According to the poll, nearly 60 percent of adults said they thought it would make insurance more expensive for low-income Americans and people with pre-existing conditions. Fifty-seven percent said it would make Medicaid less available, and 69 percent said it would cut federal money for Planned Parenthood. Thirteen percent felt that the House plan would improve the quality of their healthcare, and 9 percent said it would make their healthcare cheaper. About 28 percent of Americans said they would be “less likely” to support their congressional representative if he or she supported the House plan. Another 16 percent said they would be “more likely” to support their representative and 33 percent said it would make “no difference.”

North Korea might co-host 2018 Winter Olympic Games South Korea could ask its neighbors for help in hosting the famed sporting event. JOE PANTORNO

A report by the Washington Post on Wednesday revealed that South Korea, host of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, could ask its controversial neighbors North Korea to help co-host the famed sporting event come February. The Games are to be held in PyeongChang, which is just 40 miles from the demilitarized zone separating North from South. Within North Korea's capital of Pyeongyang is a 4,000-foot mountain

that contains 70 miles of slopes called Masikryong. The complex would provide a world-class venue for outdoor events like skiing and snowboarding. South Korean sports minister Do Jong-hwan told the Washington Post that this offer could "thaw lingering tensions," between the two countries and make the Games a "peace Olympics," as North Korean athletes would be allowed to safely pass through the demilitarized zone.

Among Jong-hwan's ideas are a women's hockey team comprised of both North and South Koreans to compete in the Games. It obviously remains to be seen how other countries would react to sending their athletes to North Korea. The United States' relationship with the country continues to worsen due to numerous missile tests and after Otto Warmbier, a college student was detained and imprisoned for 17 months by North Korea.

He was released last week and returned to the U.S. in a coma before dying Monday.

The shear amount of Boston breweries, with new locations seemingly sprouting up every year, can feel daunting at first glance. But fret not, as we’ve got your bases covered — from places with full-service restaurants to a small cider company open only on the weekends. Cheers to a tasty (and tipsy) summer in and around Beantown.

Bantam Cider Co. The only cidery on our list, Bantam is one of the best places to try sweeter libations in the Boston area. Fresh, local apples are pressed and spiced, then given fun names like “Americain” and an homage to Amelia Earhart called “Wunderkind.” Got to try: Rojo, sweetand-sour cider with cherry additions. 40 Merriam St., Somerville, bantamcider.com

Aeronaut Brewing Co. In its third year of business, Aeronaut has quickly become a cornerstone establishment in Somerville. It often hosts fun events in its community space, like weekly “Indie Trivia” and various local musicians. “We have a large community,” says co-founder Ben Holmes, “and we really appreciate all the love of everyone involved.” Got to try: Robot Crush, a light American pilsner made of grapefruit flavored

Harpoon Brewery Including this established, employeeowned brewery on the list shouldn’t be a shocker to anyone. Harpoon has been crafting delicious beverages for decades and is always coming up with new brews. True fans can also take a tour of the brewery, which are held every hour during the week and even more often during weekends. Chefs in Shorts food fest celebrates 20th anniversary The Seaport’s popular summer cookout has grown a lot over the past two decades. LINDA LABAN Chefs in Shorts celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, which means two decades of culinary experts sporting their best Bermudas as they grill up a storm in the Seaport. Just as the area has grown and changed immensely over the years, so has the annual summer event. What began as an outdoor cookout on the small park next the Seaport Hotel is now a huge food festival held on the terraces at the much larger World Trade Center, located directly across from the hotel. It’s hard to imagine a time when the area wasn’t bustling with people, but the Seaport Hotel created the event to lure folks to the neighborhood, which previously featured mostly wide-open spaces and parking lots with few attractions beyond the tented music venue then

chef Mario Batali’s popular pizza emporium. It might be LaPosta’s first year at Chefs in Shorts, but he is no rookie, having cut his teeth at Batali’s renowned Tarrytown Lodge in Port Chester, New York. The New England native, born in northern Connecticut and with family roots in Maine, is happy to now call Boston home. “We feel like we’re totally involved in the city and can reach out to the community with these types of events, he says. “Being at the event is a way to say we’re here and we are a part of it all.

For the event, LaPosta will make bruschetta with grilled primo sale (a traditional Sicilian cheese made locally) topped with a cherry mostarda and hot sausage paired with peppers. “The homemade hot sausage comes from a family recipe that goes back decades,â€? LaPosta says. “The garlicky bruschetta, the sweet mostarda and this amazing cheese ‌ I’ve never made this before, but it sounds good in my head. Plus, I want to do something for people who don’t want to eat meat.â€? While he looks forward to the grilling, LaPosta must also prepare for the requisite summer attire. “Do all the chefs wear shorts?â€? LaPosta asks as if looking for a get-out. Oh yes, they do. “Then I have to, don’t I? I’m not shy. I have a nice calves — oh, is that too much information?â€?

Donna Summer disco party rolls back into Boston The annual tribute returns to City Hall Plaza on Friday. MATT JUUL

Grab a pair of roller skates and your best bellbottoms before heading over to City Hall Plaza this weekend. Mayor Marty Walsh and the Office of Tourism, Sports and Entertainment recently announced that the Donna Summer roller disco party will return to Boston on Friday, June 23. The free, family-friendly event in honor of the late, great disco queen will once again feature live music, a skating rink, as well as appearances by members of the Summer family. Now in its fourth year, the annual festivities pay tribute to the Boston music icon, who passed away

five years ago on May 17, 2012. Born in Dorchester and raised in Mission Hill, Summer went on to sell close to 150 million records during her career, winning five Grammy Awards in the process. The “Last Dance” singer was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. “Donna Summer was not only a Bostonian through and through — her music, spirit and presence made her a national treasure and global icon,” event organizer Frankie Stavrianopoulos said in a statement. “It is only fitting that we celebrate her, in our world-class city during

the season that bares her namesake in a fun, uplifting and musical manner.” This year’s festivities, which take place between 6 and 10 p.m., will include a performance by Summer’s sister and former backup singer, Mary Gaines Bernard, as well as music provided by Hot 96.9’s DJ Roy Barboza. In addition to boogieing the night away, attendees will be able to roll around in a skating rink set up at City Hall Plaza. If you forget to bring your skates, just make sure to show up early as the city will have free rentals available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

David Crane and Jeffrey Klarik talk Nantucket film fest, ‘Friends’ reunion Plus, the sitcom icons dish on the final season of “Episodes.” MATT JUUL

Movies may be the main attractions at the 2017 Nantucket Film Festival, but this weekend’s festivities will also honor two of the most influential minds in television. “Friends” co-creator and Brandeis University alum David Crane along with former “Mad About You” writer and co-producer Jeffrey Klarik will take home the Creative Impact in Television Writing Award at the Screenwriters Tribute on June 23, hosted by Ben Stiller. The life partners, who co-created the Emmy-nominated series “Episodes” starring Newton native Matt LeBlanc, are excited to

make their first trip to the Bay State island. “I grew up in Connecticut and it was always beyond our reach some how. Like, ‘Oh, that’s the fancy place,’” Klarik jokes. “We never got to go there and I always wanted to go, so we’re really excited. Plus the fact that we’re being honored is just like icing on the cake.” The always-entertaining duo gives us the scoop on their trip to Nantucket, the final season of “Episodes” and their thoughts on a possible “Friends” reunion.

because we do. And every Christmas we actually go back and stay in Vermont for

like two weeks just to get a snow fix. We really do miss the variety of climate.

One year we were at Goodspeed [Musicals] in Connecticut, and all of a sudden I go, “Oh my God, the foliage. I’ve never seen that!” And then I thought, “Yes, you did, you just took it for granted.” Do you agree with critics who say we’re living in the golden age of television? JK: This is really the golden age of television. Sometimes we’ll look back at shows that we liked back then and go, “Really? I remember it being much funnier or much richer.” Now, we’ll watch “Handmaid’s Tale” and it’s better than any film we’ve seen in the theaters. The fact that we’ve broken free from the network system and it’s no longer entertainment by commit-

tee anymore, I think people are given much more free rein and therefore they’re able to create their visions. David Crane: Certainly we have been. Showtime and the BBC really just let us make the show that we wanted to make. If you’re going to fail, fail on your own terms, but you have a greater chance of succeeding. Was it always the plan to end “Episodes” with season five? JK: We actually said to Showtime, “We want to finish it up this year.” We think we’ve told the story we set out to tell, and we would love to just do a few more and go out on top. They kind of wanted us to stay longer, but I think it was the right time and everyone was anxious to try new

things. DC: You want to leave them wanting more. How awesome has it been to team up with Matt LeBlanc again for the show? JK: I can’t think of anybody who could’ve done this part better. DC: Beside being an incredible actor and an incredible comedian, he’s also a really good sport. JK: And is perfectly fine with us making him the butt of the joke, as long as he thinks the joke is funny, he’ll go along with just about anything we suggest. A ton of stars will join you two in Nantucket. Do you guys still get starstruck at events like this? DC: We’re easily intimidated. JK: Very intimidated. I mean, I love the fact that we’ll get to see Ben Stiller and Kristen Schaal. DC: Just amazingly funny, talented people. JK: We’re kind of going as fans.

Everyone wants to see a “Friends” reunion, but do you believe that Hollywood’s reboot culture is hurting the industry? DC: Our feeling is, and this isn’t to put down anyone doing a reboot,

but you finish it. You put a bow on it. You finish it the way you want, and certainly that’s how we look at it. We finished it the way we wanted to finish it, and also, I think the great risk is,

everyone says, like, “I want a reunion! I want a reunion!” When you actually do it, very often the response is, “Meh.” JK: I think it’s like looking up an old girlfriend or boyfriend.

As partners in work and in life, how do you balance those two worlds? JK: There’s no line between our personal lives and our work lives. It’s all one big, fun package. DC: When we’re in the midst of it, Jeff will wake up talking about it, we’re in the car talk-

ing about it. JK: Sometimes I’ll actually say to David, “I’m begging you, just for one minute, can we talk about one thing other than work.” He’ll say, “Sure,” and then we’ll look at each other for a few minutes in silence. DC: And then it’s usually Jeffrey who says, “What if this happens in the show?” And we’re back at it.

Mark Wahlberg is the ‘Last Knight’ The Dorchester native dishes on his last “Transformers” flick. MATT JUUL

Mark Wahlberg plays Cade Yeager in ‘Transformers: The Last Knight.’ PARAMOUNT PICTURES

Mark Wahlberg shipped up to Foxboro on Monday, but it wasn’t to hang out with his Super Bowlwinning pal Tom Brady. The Boston-bred star stopped by the Showcase Live Patriot Place cinema for a special redcarpet event and screening of his latest action flick “Transformers: The Last Knight.” While the Dorchester native told the media in attendance that this is likely his last appearance in the franchise, Wahlberg assured fans that director Michael Bay has upped the ante for “The Last Knight.” “I think you’re going to see bigger, better and more,” said the 46-yearold actor. “Michael, he makes these movies for the fans, and he’s always trying to out do

himself with new technology, new storylines, new characters. I think people are really going to enjoy it.” Wahlberg is without a doubt one of the most physically fit stars in Hollywood (though his “Ballers” buddy Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson owns the top spot), so it’s no surprise that his “Transformers” costars like Josh Duhamel wouldn’t even attempt his crack-of-dawn workout sessions. Waking up as early as 3 a.m. to pump iron before hitting the golf course, Wahlberg is able to stick to his on-set regimen by making sure he hits the sack early. “I think Josh goes out after work, has a couple of drinks and eats dinner. See, I go right to

bed,” he told Metro. “Michael Bay knows that, come 7:30 p.m., it’s time for me to go to bed because I’ve gotten up so early. I wake up early, go to work, do what I got to do before I actually go and shoot.” For Monday’s event, Wahlberg and Hasbro, the Rhode Island toy company behind the “Transformers” series, treated a group of young fans to an evening of games and a sneak peek at the new film, which debuted Tuesday. Because the theater is a literal stone’s throw from Gillette Stadium, of course the New England superfan had to give his beloved Patriots some props. Wahlberg praised owner Robert Kraft for his work over the years in transform-

Despite his busy summer, don’t expect Wahlberg to miss the megafight between undefeated boxer Floyd

Local comedian Sean Sullivan has a casual, rambling style, drifting between topics in a classic New England deadpan. One imagines seeing him on stage wouldn’t be too different from just driving around with him. The more banal the topic, the more he seems to excel — a 2014 set on YouTube, for example, finds him spending several amusing minutes talking about Home Depot. Passing on Fultz may have been big mistake by C’s OPINION

DANNY PICARD

@dannypicard

I’ll admit it. I jumped aboard the Markelle Fultz hype-train. I bought in. I was prepared for Fultz to be the next superstar point guard in the NBA. And I was expecting him to be just that in Boston, as the No. 1 overall pick. So when the Celtics traded down to No. 3 overall this past weekend, something didn’t feel right. I was expecting Fultz in Green, or, I wanted more in return if they did trade out of No. 1. And perhaps, by the time you read this, one of these crazy trade rumors will come to fruition and that “more” I was expecting will be signed, sealed, and delivered. Even so, it will all mean one thing: Fultz is not walking through that door. Not as a member of the Celtics, at least. The Philadelphia 76ers are expected to draft Fultz No. 1 overall on Thursday night. It

will be at that moment where I’ll feel a little sick to my stomach. Regardless of what the Celtics do on draft night, I’ll still be over here thinking about what could have been. Because for the last three months, most people have tried to tell me what Fultz is going to be. No, he’s not projected to be the next

Silly season is here How crazy do you want to get with this NBA trade talk? Here’s a good one: could the Celtics land likely MVP Russell Westbrook this summer? Don’t laugh entirely. Westbrook can opt out of his deal next summer, and Thunder GM Sam Presti would be under intense pressure to get a haul for the star point guard given that he traded James Harden for peanuts and let Kevin Durant walk out the door for nothing in return. close to making those comparisons. But don’t look at Fultz now and tell me he’s considered to be an average NBA point guard at best, just because the Celtics decided not to keep the pick and draft him. Danny Ainge is playing the “value” game right now, it seems. And like I said, perhaps there’s another move coming. But if we’re putting any stock whatsoever into the mock drafts created by “experts” whose only job is to cover college basketball and the NBA Draft, then we can’t let Ainge’s evaluation and value-plays turn into a smear campaign against Fultz. The 19-year-old out of Washington averaged 23 points per game with a .476 field-goal percentage and a .413 3-point percentage. He’s an athletic 6-foot-5

point guard with a 6-foot-10 wingspan who can shoot and finish around the net. Throughout the college season, the projected No. 1 overall pick was either him or UCLA’s Lonzo Ball. Even though he didn’t advance to the NCAA tournament, Fultz had separated himself as the clearcut No. 1 overall pick in most draft analysts’ eyes. So either they have no idea what they’re talking about, or Fultz really does have all the tools to be an elite offensive point guard in the NBA. Initially, I expressed my concerns with the Celtics drafting a point guard because they already have one in Isaiah Thomas. And the 28-year-old Thomas established himself as a max player this past season, while finish-

ing the year third in the league in scoring, averaging 28.9 points per game. People tried to tell me Thomas and Fultz could play together. And they’re probably right. My concern was that Thomas wouldn’t want the team to draft another point guard, and that he would instead choose to sign somewhere else as a free agent next summer. But the more highlights I saw of Fultz, and the more I was told by the experts that he was the best player in the draft, the more I bought into the idea of keeping the pick and drafting him No. 1 overall, while hoping Thomas would want to stick around as a shooting guard. Well, Fultz will still be drafted No. 1 overall. It just won’t be by the Celtics. And there’s something about it that just doesn’t feel right. Boston will always remember No. 34 David Ortiz will have his number retired by the Red Sox on Friday at Fenway. MATT BURKE When David Ortiz grabs the microphone at Fenway on Friday night during his retirement ceremony, he should first shout, “This is our f---ing city,” followed by, “And this is my f---ing team!” Many Bostonians are hoping the ultimate drama then occurs, with Ortiz announcing that instead of retiring, he is returning to active duty for the Red Sox. It’s a nice thought, but one that is about as likely as the Red Sox changing their official team colors to orange and pink. All Boston sports fans know just how special of a player Ortiz was. His career home run total (483) is second in club history, his RBI total (1,530) is third and he owns the distinction of being the most clutch player in Red Sox history, if not baseball history. remarkable a journey Ortiz endured to get to this point in his life. In early 2003, Ortiz’s career had hit absolute rock bottom. “So David was sitting

there in [a Santo Domingo restaurant in 2003] barely looking at me,” Martinez told the website. “[Ortiz said] I just got released by Minnesota. You know what I did?

I jumped in the air and clapped. We needed a first baseman in Boston, and I knew that could be David. “David looked at me, and I think it was the only time in my life I’ve ever seen him serious. He said, ‘How can that be great? My little girl was born two weeks ago, and I don’t have one cent in the bank. How can that be great, bro?’’ “Because now I can take you with me to the Red Sox. “He said, ‘For real?’ “I said, ‘For real.’ “Man, I’m telling you — his face lit up like a little kid’s.” Martinez called members of the Sox front office that night and soon after the Red Sox had a new first baseman/designated hitter. The rest is history. (NESN will broadcast the Ortiz ceremony beginning at 6 p.m. Friday).
