KOCH BROTHERS UNHAPPY 60 HIGH-RISE BUILDINGS MAN ACCUSED OF KILLING WITH HEALTHCARE BILL IN UK FAIL SAFETY TESTS MASS. JOGGER INDICTED

1

Officials with the conservative U.S. political network overseen by the Koch brothers say they are unhappy with the healthcare bill that may be voted on by the Senate this week and will lobby for changes to it. At a weekend event with conservative donors, top aides to Charles Koch, the billionaire energy magnate, said the Senate bill does not go far enough to dismantle former President Barack

Obama’s signature healthcare law, also known as Obamacare. “We have been disappointed that movement has not been more dramatic toward a full repeal,” said Tim Phillips, president of Americans for Prosperity, a grassroots advocacy group backed by Charles Koch and his brother, David.

Sixty high-rise buildings have failed safety tests carried out after a fire killed at least 79 people in London earlier this month, the British government said on Sunday. British officials are conducting tests on some 600 high-rise buildings across England after fire ravaged the Grenfell tower block in west London on June 14, prompting public anger over the Conservative government’s

budget cuts. On Friday some 4,000 residents were forced to evacuate their homes in north London after the fire brigade ruled that their blocks were unsafe. The Department for Communities said in a statement that 60 high-rise buildings across 25 local authority areas had now failed the tests.

A Worcester man who was arrested in connection with the death of Princeton jogger Vanessa Marcotte back in April has now been indicted for murder, according to a statement from Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early. Angelo Colon-Ortiz, 31, was indicted for the murder of Marcotte by a Worcester County Grand Jury. Colon-Ortiz was arrested in April after his DNA

matched that from samples found on Marcotte’s hands. Marcotte’s body was found in the woods of Princeton, Massachusetts in August 2016. Marcotte was reported missing when she hadn’t returned from a run and she likely struggled with her attacker, officials said not long after her death.

TEXAS TODDLERS DIE AFTER LEFT IN HOT CAR

A Texas mother has been arrested for the deaths of her two toddlers who she said were left in a hot car to teach the older child a lesson while the woman smoked marijuana and took a nap, authorities said. Cynthia Randolph, 24, was being held on $200,000 bail for the deaths of her 16-monthold son and 2-year-old daughter last month, Danie Huffman, a spokeswoman for the Parker County Sheriff ’s Office, said in an

email. Randolph had originally told investigators that she had been folding laundry and watching television in her rural home west of Fort Worth while the boy, Cavanaugh Ramirez, and his sister Juliet Ramirez played on a back porch, according to a criminal complaint. After noticing the children were missing, Randolph told officers she found them unresponsive in a locked car and broke a window to rescue them.

There are more than 19,000 homeless people in Massachusetts, according to 2016 U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development data, and Derek Cummings thinks those individuals are far too often overlooked. That fact is more than just a number to Cummings, a Boston entertainer who goes by “Big D.â€? He’s known a lot of people who have experienced homelessness, he said, and when he heard his friends’ stories, he was inspired to do something around the issue. “I wanted to paint a picture for people to really see what’s going on,â€? he said. As an entertainment artist, the natural solution was to create a song. Cummings partnered with the Massachusetts Housing & Shelter Alliance, a nonprofit that focuses on

Derek “Big D Cummings (left) donated clothes and shoes to St. Francis House shelter in December. COURTESY OF DEREK CUMMINGS

advocacy to end chronic homelessness, for the release of the track, called “Help the Homeless.â€? The song is available on iTunes for $1, and 100 percent of its proceeds will go to MHSA and its mission to end homelessness. “It’s all about helping each other,â€? Cummings said. “At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how much money or fame you have, we’re all the same, and that’s the main message I’m pushing in the song.â€? Cummings wrote the

song from the perspective of someone who is homeless. “People walk past me every day; they don’t even wanna look me in the face, he says in the track. Ahead of recording, he visited shelters like St. Francis and Pine Street Inn, donating clothing and hearing more people’s stories. He even met a few musicians who said they would love to see Cummings’ studio and learn about the recording process. He plans on bringing a few of them in to “show them the ropes.

To Joe Finn, president and executive director of MHSA, sharing this song is about more than the potential donations. “I think it’s very important [because] we cannot become totally desensitized to the issue of homelessness, and yet, at times — given our own tenuous economic situation or whatever difficulties — we have a tendency to make it ‘other,’â€? he said. “What really struck me about [Cummings’ song] was what he was doing was humanizing people that often times others just simply walk by,â€? he added. Finn acknowledged that in Boston, Mayor Marty Walsh has focused on ending homelessness by creating more housing options and efforts to get the chronically homeless out of shelters. Chronic homelessness means that the shelters aren’t being used just as an emergency option but as someone’s main housing — MHSA just helped house someone who has been living in a homeless shelter for 30 years, Finn said. But despite those efforts, more can always be done, Finn added. Even if it’s just raising awareness, as Cummings does in this song, of the humans behind the homelessness.Â

Dorchester residents wary on Boston 2030 benefits The hardscrabble neighborhood’s renaissance is part of Mayor Marty Walsh’s plans for the future. NATE HOMAN @MetroBOS

letters@metro.us

Dorchester residents have voiced a nervous excitement at the prospect of breathing new life into the Fairmount Corridor under Imagine Boston 2030, the city’s first comprehensive planning effort since the failed attempt to clear land for a new southwest expressway in the 1960s. As part of the plan, the city has rolled out details on their vision to better connect the Fairmount Corridor, which spans South Boston, Dorchester, Mattapan and Hyde Park, to the rest of the MBTA network through the Indigo Line last May. This $130 million plan is part of a larger effort to connect Upham’s Corner to the “constellation of emerging and existing job centers in the area” like Newmarket and Widett Circle and Dudley Square in hopes of creating “local job centers and creative economy nodes.” With the completion of the Blue Hill Avenue Station at the start of June, the Indigo Line is set to run through Talbot Avenue, New Market and Four Corners/Geneva Avenue starting in 2019. In the neighborhood, where only 45 percent of adults over 25 have more than a high school education, and median household income is just over $41,000 per year, residents have some concerns about the developments. “It started in Charlestown, Southie and now Dorchester,” said Mark Doherty, 43. “They are barely the same towns

they once were. Now it’s happening in Dorchester. Instead of squeezing people in and out of the city, how about we do more for vets, the homeless, fix the school system, the huge heroin problem we have had for years.” Others cited the benefits but also voiced concerns for the neighborhood’s future diversity. “As a homeowner who’s about 10 to 12 years away from retirement, I’m very excited about what revitalization will do for my home value,” Dorchester native Dennis White, 52, said. “But if this trend continues throughout Dorchester, it will be out of reach for low- and middle-income families. Part of what makes Dorchester interesting is its diversity. Dorchester does need more cultural stuff, art, music [and] meaningful communication between different ethnic groups. I fear that expansion and improvements could easily just be code words for gentrification.” The Fairmount Line runs through what is arguably the most dangerous neighborhood in Boston, Bowdoin-Geneva. Some residents have high hopes for what an enhancement might bring. “I’ve lived here since 2010, and the area has only improved in the time I’ve been here,” said Roach McCracken, 37. “There are a disproportionate number of shootings and other gang-related incidents in my neighborhood, but the general feel of the area is becoming safer. I’m also not blind to gentrification, and I think it’s important to make sure that the community has the opportunity to help shape its own future.” McCracken cited the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative (DSNI) as a community advocacy group with “good hedges against gentrification.”

Prince Harry just wants to be a normal Lately, Prince Harry has been doing his best to be even more wellliked and miraculously, I’m not sick of it yet. The artist informally known as the Hot Ginger Prince is opening up about how he once longed to be a regular ol’ dude. Harry revealed to journalist Angela Levin that he got so sick of being royal and rich that he briefly considered walking among the common people. Those feelings were exacerbated when he had to leave the Army — he was abruptly removed when his position in Afghanistan was leaked. “I felt I wanted out but then decided to stay in and work out a role for myself.” Yeah, Queen Elizabeth probably told him what’s what. But let’s just be clear that when Harry says he wanted to be a commoner, he meant a rich one. ’Cause honey, you couldn’t live in a four-bedroom in Brooklyn with no central air and a closet for a bathroom. I’ll tell you that right now.

Nicki Minaj’s exes literally take it to the streets In a desperate bid for attention, two men who have found the most fame as ex-boyfriends of Nicki Minaj are literally fighting each other in the streets. can’t f—k with me, so that’s why you had to do that.” In the video itself, over at TMZ, Safaree is seen literally running away from Meek’s crew, who are the dudes throwing the punches. Methinks Safaree is one of those “fake news” types. Minaj, meanwhile, is busy dating and having celibate sleepovers with rapper Nas, as you do. Good to know she’s moving onward and upward. As much as I love when grown men act like children — it brings me an unbridled sense of joy! — I’m glad Minaj is like, upping her standards.

Ed Sheeran once lived with Jamie Foxx Sometimes you discover that two celebrities that you didn’t know knew each other know each other and it blows your mind. And that’s what’s happening between Ed Sheeran, Jamie Foxx and me right now. The Katie Holmes boyfriend denier went on “The Graham Norton Show” and revealed that he is partially responsible for Sheeran’s rise to fame. “Ed Sheeran slept on my couch. For six

anything he can’t do confessed that he was so enthralled by Sheeran’s sheer talent, that he took him in under his wing. Then he challenged Sheeran by bringing him to an open mic he hosted. “I said, ‘Well, let’s see what the kid has.’ He brought the house down with his ukulele skills, and the rest, as we know is history.” Ah yes, history. History is always hearing that one Ed Sheeran song in grocery stores and in Ubers across America.

If that’s what you want, girl.

Bella & Scott are still hanging Bella Thorne, a 19-yearold actress, recently said words to the tune of “Scott Disick is a bit much for even me.” But fickle are the young, I guess: She’s already back to hanging and partying with the perpetual moocher. Thorne and Disick, 34, were seen leaving Lana Del Rey’s birthday party at 1OAK nightclub.

A source tells People that the two have been spending quite a bit of time together. “Bella keeps spending time at Scott’s house,” the source told the magazine. “They have been hanging out every day. She seems to love the attention she gets from hanging out with him.” Yeah, that is pretty clear.

But apparently, the relationship is not even romantic, which should be a small comfort to us all. “Scott has people over at his house almost every night,” the source continued. “He continues to party.” I bet on a scale of, “Girl, I guess,” to “I’m sorry, what?” Kourtney Kardashian is this close to “Boy, bye.”

For Alison Brie, ‘GLOW’ is a dream come true The actress takes on her first leading role. RACHAEL VAUGHAN CLEMMONS @rachaelclemz

rachael.clemmons@metro.us

If you run into Alison Brie, ask her to show you her sweet wrestling moves. “A lot of people want me to pull these moves out as a party trick,” says Brie. “I’m just a pro-wrestler now.” That’s not too far from the truth. The actress is starring in Netflix’s latest series, “GLOW,” which follows the personal and professional lives of a ragtag group of misfit women transforming themselves into the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. It’s a delicious trip to the ’80s, and Brie, who plays Ruth, is right at the center. “I really felt like a team captain,” she says over the phone, upbeat. “I wanted to really prove myself while working on the role.” It’s Brie’s first go at leading a television show. And the 34-year-old — who is perhaps most popular for her roles in “Mad Men” as Trudy Campbell and “Community” as Annie Edison — fought damn hard for it. “I was told kind of early on that people weren’t sure if I was quite right for the part,” she says. “You audition for certain things and you’re like, ‘Oh, this would be a cool job, but I don’t know if I’m quite right for this part.’ And there are other things that I read and it’s immediately like, ‘This is my role!’ [‘GLOW’ was] one of those.” Premiering Friday, we’ll get to see her as a bona fide wrestler babe. One that discovered pretty early on that wrest l i n g is a bit more, let’s say, intimate than other sports. “The first bigger move that I learned for the show is the h e a d s c i s s o r. And learning the headscissor [my stunt double] was like, ‘Basically you want your

vagina to hit [your opponent’s] chin, and that’s how you know you’re in the right position. If you feel contact, you did it right.’ We were like ‘Oh!’” She laughs, hard. “‘Great!’” And even though she doesn’t do party tricks yet, she has taken her new moves on the road. “I did put Larry King in a headlock [a few] days ago, and that was kind of cool,” she says. Brie’s quick to assure though, it wasn’t hardcore. “It was a very gentle headlock.” Even outside showing Larry King her wrestling prowess, the Los Angeles native can’t be stopped. The actress was recently cast in “The Papers,” a film to be directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep. “I’m just as shocked, trust me!” she says, in disbelief. Plus, “The Little Hours,” (“This is the most difficult movie to describe. Raunchy medieval nun comedy?”) is coming later this month, and “BoJack Horseman” later this year. She’s enthusiastic about the return of the animated series, which sees her voicing Diane Nguyen, the rare human in an anthropomorphic world. “This is so rude to Diane, but given her behavior, I almost want to see her as a sloth,” Brie says. “She’s deadpan a lot of the time, and she has gone through periods of not knowing what —” Brie starts talking s l o w l y, imi-

tating whatever it is a sloth might sound like — “she wants to dooo.” She laughs again. “It’s not a perfect fit, but you know!” But for now, “GLOW” — with its imminent re-

lease and near-constant press — is her main focus. “It was really a dream come true,” she says. “It sounds so boring, but I was just grateful and excited. And more than any-

times — she’s grateful. “There’s nothing more fun than working on a comedy and getting to laugh with everyone,” she says. Good thing “GLOW” is a riot.

Craziest things in the new ‘Transformers’

“The Last Knight is so nuts it will make you feel like you dreamt it.

MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

You don’t go to Michael Bay movies for logic. Still, “Transformers: The Last Knight, his fifth in the series, is some white hot nonsense. Every last inch of it is nuts, even for a series that, in the second episode, included a giant space robot with wrecking ball-sized testes. Here’s the five parts that made us think acid had been slipped into our popcorn:

It all involves King Arthur somehow Imagine your face when the very first scene in “The Last Knight takes place in the Dark Ages — during a battle involving King Arthur. As we gradually learn, Transformers have been visiting Earth for centuries, helping out in wars, and usually for the correct side. (How millions of soldiers — as well as untold civilians — never thought to pass this intel along to the rest of the world is never explained.) They even helped King Arthur, apparently a real historical figure. They did this by giving Merlin — not really a sorcerer but a drunk played by Stanley Tucci — a magic rod that summons a fire-breathing dino-dragon. There were even 12 robot knights who sat at — or,

given their size, probably stood near to — the Round Table.

guishable from magic. Wahlberg sounds like he learned it phonetically.

4

Flashback to Nazi Germany During a lengthy info dump around the halfway mark — delivered by no less than Sir Anthony Hopkins, cheerfully accepting a very large paycheck — we learn that the Transformers didn’t just hang with King Arthur. They even killed Hitler! Cue a short but very expensive-looking scene in which a bunch of cars roll up to a swanky Nazi gathering — only the cars are Autobots, and they start blowing up a bunch of Nazis real good. Then as suddenly as this flashback began, it ends, leaving you to wonder if it ever happened at all.

3

Marky Mark quotes Arthur C. Clarke It’s so Michael Bay to cast the former leader of the Monkey Bunch as a crackpot inventor. We let that one slide in “Age of Extinction. But in “The Last Knight, there’s a moment where Bay/Wahlberg cross a line. Speaking about how alien technology is like magic, Wahlberg’s Cade Yeager rattles off a famous and very useful quote coined by sci-fi god Arthur C. Clarke: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistin-

Michael Bay solves Stonehenge To delve too deeply into this one is a spoiler. So let’s just say that Stonehenge plays a key part in the super-sized, endless climax, and that the Druids apparently built it to help out some robots from space that can also turn into cars. Which, we mean, is probably true.

5

The “robot ninja butler interrupts Sir Anthony Hopkins OK, this part we genuinely liked. During Hopkins’ aforementioned exposition monologue, we’re meant to lean forward, take the nonsense he’s babbling about seriously. Except Michael Bay doesn’t really want us to: He keeps having Hopkins’ “robot ninja butler — voiced by Jim Carter of “Downton Abbey — interrupt him. What we think is a swelling organ on the soundtrack is actually his robot making music for dramaticcomedic effect. He keeps doing it with different instruments, each time enraging Sir Anthony. It’s an old joke, but it’s a funny joke, and a funny joke may not belong in something like “Transformers: The Last Knight.

Whether you’re looking to stream the latest news, deposit money into your bank account or shop for shoes, chances are there’s an app for that. Of course, it doesn’t find its way into the app store without first touching the hands of a mobile-app developer, who’s responsible for everything from brainstorming the design with artists to typing up the code that makes it a reality. We spoke with Kathy Tafel, the director of mobile engineering at Meetup, to find out more about the profession: What does a mobile-app developer do? A mobile-app developer is responsible for creating, testing and programming apps for mobile devices. “They usually work

with product managers, designers and artists to build app features and then bring those ideas to life through code,” says Tafel. “If you’re on a bigger team, your [code] gets integrated with other team members’ work, and eventually that gets built into software that can be distributed by Google Play or the Apple app store.” What schooling do you need? While a computerscience degree is not required, it is helpful. More important, though, is a basic understanding of how computers work. The rest can be learned through a series of online tutorials and classes. “You have to have a curiosity and a desire to make it happen — without that, you can’t do it — but you absolutely don’t need to go to school,” Tafel says. In fact, unless you attend a school that’s devoted specifically to app development, a computer-science degree is not guaranteed to arm you with the needed skills. “You’ll still need to do the same thing, which is learn on the internet how to use the environment, and run through tutorials,” she says.

Finding employment Nowadays, nearly every industry— from healthcare to fashion and entertainment— has an app, which means there are plenty of employment opportunities for those looking to enter the field. And while the skills of an app developer are undoubtedly in highdemand, companies are generally looking for people with experience. Tafel’s advice for those looking to break in: Create an app and maintain it for a few years. That gives you a tangible product to show to potential employers. The pros “There an exhilaration that comes from knowing that what you’re typing on your screen will be on billions of people’s devices in a couple of weeks,” says Tafel. And that doesn’t even take into account the bigger picture. “You change the world every time you add something to the software ecosystem,” she says.

Bruins begin to take shape

Last weekend’s NHL draft helped start the upcoming season in earnest. RICH SLATE @RichSlate

sports@metro.us

With defenseman Colin Miller predictably getting selected by the Las Vegas Golden Knights in last week’s expansion draft and then six guys getting picked on Friday and Saturday in the 2017 NHL draft, the next edition of the Bruins has started to be formed. Things will really get ramped up on Saturday when free agency begins at noon (EST) and trade season has already begun, although Boston thus far has been very quiet on that front. The newest B’s (who in all likelihood are at least a year or two away from the NHL) are Finnish defenseman Urho

Vaakanainen (1st round, 18th overall), Canadian forward Jack Studnicka (2nd round, 53rd overall), American goaltender Jeremy Swayman (4th round, 111th overall), Canadian forward Cedric Pare (6th round, 173rd overall), Swedish defenseman Victor Berglund (7th round, 195th overall) and Czech defenseman Daniel Bukac (7th round, 204th overall). The NHL free agent class of 2017 isn’t exactly one for the ages, at least on paper. It’s mostly filled with veterans, many of whom could be referred to as washed up or overthe-hill (and therefore not worthy of a long-term investment), with talented youngsters few and far between. However, I believe there is a small group of players (three forwards and two defensemen) that the Bruins would be smart to target in free agency. At the moment, Boston has a bunch of promising second-, third- and fourth-

The Bruins added a talented European defenseman with their first round pick last weekend.

year players (think defenseman Charlie McAvoy and right wing David Pastrnak) so if I was GM Don Sweeney, I would look for some dependable veterans that would blend well with their current cast as they hope to reach the postseason and advance further than last spring. Defenseman Andrei Markov is 38 years old, which clearly makes you pause but he is still competing at a high level, although he’ll probably want a ton of money since he had a cap hit of $5,750,000 last season with Montreal. Therein

lies the other intriguing part about him: He would strengthen Boston’s defense while simultaneously weakening their archrival Canadiens (assuming that he wants to go back there). Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk is a more polished and accomplished replacement for Colin Miller. He struggled for a while last season after he was traded to Washington but he is only 28 with a cap hit of $4,250,000 in 2016-17. He’s from Connecticut and starred at BU as well so it’s doubtful that he’d be intimidated by playing in Boston.

Center Mike Fisher was the captain of the Predators, who just lost in the Stanley Cup Final to Pittsburgh, and he was also on the Senators when they were in the Stanley Cup Final back in 2007. Since his wife is country music superstar Carrie Underwood, they probably want to stay in Music City, but he’s a winner ($4.4 million cap hit last season), so if you can sign him, go for it. Hingham native and former BC Eagle Brian Boyle is a similar center who you can picture as a Bruin. He’s good on special teams and only car-

ried a cap hit of $2 million last season that ended in Toronto for him. Wherever he goes, his clubs always seem to pile up the victories. Finally, right wing Justin Williams remains on the short-list of the most clutch players in the NHL. He’s 35 and while he couldn’t bring a Cup to the cursed Capitals ($3.25 million cap hit last year), he won a combined three with Carolina and LA. The Bruins always need wingers who can put the puck in the net and he’s someone who always steps up in the biggest games.

Celtics rumors continue to heat up after draft Celtics boss Danny Ainge has said many times that he is not afraid to trade for a superstar player in the final year of his contract. Ainge has never backed up that boast in his 14 years at the helm of the C’s, but during the NBA draft on Thursday night it looked like the ultimate gamble might actually go down. Shortly after the Celtics selected Duke swingman Jayson Tatum No. 3 overall, The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted, “Indiana and Boston are engaged in serious talks on a Paul George trade, league sources tell @TheVertical.” Wojnarowski is the Adam Schefter of NBA news — the be-all and end-all — so his tweet sent Celtics fans into an imme-

significant momentum, but sides are still apart on a possible deal.” The Celtics can put together the best package for George unless

the Lakers are willing to part with Brandon Ingram. Magic Johnson has repeatedly said that Ingram is not on the table for a potential trade but

enticing for LA. With George threatening to leave the Pacers for LA next summer, his trade stock has plummeted. The Celtics could likely land George for the Lakers/Kings pick they

received from Philly and a player like Avery Bradley or Jae Crowder. The risk, of course, is that George bolts for LA next summer. But Ainge has hinted in the past that he thinks that if a player gets a taste of playoff basketball in Boston, he will fall in love and be open to sign an extension. As long as the Celtics don’t relinquish next year’s Brooklyn pick, this may be a deal worth making. If the Celtics do get George via trade, it will likely happen after July 1 — the first day of NBA free agency. In free agency, the Celtics are reportedly highly interested in both Utah swingman Gordon Hayward and Clippers power forward Blake Griffin. MATT BURKE

Which Boston sports venue holds the most social media-consumed fans? HYP3R has created a metric to measure which fans are on their phones the most while at sporting events. JOE PANTORNO @joepantorno

joseph.pantorno@metro.us

We’ve all been there. We get to our seats at our favorite team’s venue just before a game, and before you can say “play ball,” the phones are out and we are snapping pictures whether it’s of ourselves, our food, the field/court/ rink, or that guy wearing a Drew Bledsoe jersey at a Red Sox game. It’s 2017, man. Come on. Regardless, you have to make sure that you flood your newsfeed or Instagram with photos of your attendance at each game. Pics or it didn’t happen, am I right? Or you could be like some (including myself) who grow annoyed with the flock of people snapping photos during play and diverting their attention away from the action. Last month, marketing platform HYP3R released its “geosocial index,” which allows businesses and venues, like stadiums, to track activity on social media. This isn’t simply tracking a certain web page or public figure. This is aggregating every sort of social post at any given location and ranking them using their “HYP3R Score.” The metric ranks locations on a scale of 0-100 “based on the volume of social activity happening.” That includes the number of users posting and the reach of each specific post over a certain period of time. “This isn’t about one person, this is an aggregate number posting from a location across multiple social networks,” HYP3R CEO Carlos Garcia said. “And so we thought, ‘Can we track that and can we rank them?’ So we normalized that data with a component of capacity, saying a stadium of this size should generate this much social media

activity.” HYP3R, which sparked this idea in October 2015, maintains monthly rankings that update each week. Despite the NBA Finals finishing up a week ago, Oracle Arena is on top just like its tenants, the Golden State Warriors with a HYP3R score of 100. Quicken Loans Arena, just like the Cleveland Cavaliers, are runners up with a 99. TD Garden, home of the Celtics and Bruins, is the highest-ranked Boston venue at No. 6 with a score of 97. Among other Bostonarea stadiums and arenas, Fenway Park has a score of 91 while Gillette Stadium has garnered an 87. Once football season starts back up and the Patriots take the field, expect Gillette Stadium’s number to skyrocket. A lot of this obviously correlates with the amount of games played and attendance each night, too. The Red Sox could play up to six home games in

“I see it not as a metric of distraction, but as an engagement.” Carlos Garcia

a week, which would provide a steady stream of fans entering the ballpark and thus build up the HYP3R score. But could this metric also show the least attentive fans in sports? The more fans that are in attendance, the higher a venue’s score will be. However, it could show the markets in which patrons look at a game more as a social event instead of a vital part of everyday life, which many fans see sports as. We constantly see the lower sections of venues filled to the brim with suits and celebrities that seemingly care more about their image than the outcome of the game. But that’s not how Gar-

Fenway Park’s high level of attendance lends to a high level of social media activity during Red Sox games.

cia sees it. “It reflects the engagement of fans at the game. Yes, they’re posting and we could see it as a distraction, but for the most part, they’re sharing their excitement and in-game experience with friends and followers,” he said. “It’s very much contextual to an excited fan that is cheering for their team and letting their friends and followers know that they’re having a great time at the game. And some get very technical with their thoughts. Everyone is a commentator these days.” It also could add on to the theory of which sports bore fans more. While hockey and basketball provide nonstop action, football has an average of only 12 minutes of gameplay and baseball has plenty of downtime built into its structure. Less action and instant gratification force people to their phones. It’s just the way it is these days, whether you are sitting on a subway or in a stadium surrounded by 45,000 people. But for the teams looking to expand their presence on social media, this could become an important tool in making that a reality.
