SUPREME COURT REVIVES SHIP STAYED ON COLLISION AMTRAK NAMES FORMER TRUMP TRAVEL BAN COURSE DESPITE WARNING DELTA EXECUTIVE AS CEO
1
The U.S. Supreme Court handed a victory to President Donald Trump by allowing his temporary ban on travelers from six Muslim-majority countries and all refugees to go into effect for people with no strong ties to the United States while agreeing to decide this fall the legality of the order. The case represents a major test of presidential powers. The justices, in their unsigned decision, granted parts of the Trump
administration’s emergency request to put the order into effect immediately while the legal battle continues. The court, which narrowed the scope of lower court rulings that had completely blocked his March 6 executive order, said it would hear arguments in October on the lawfulness of one of Trump’s signature policies.

A U.S. warship struck by a container vessel in Japanese waters failed to respond to warning signals or take evasive action before a collision that killed seven of its crew, according to a report by the Philippine cargo ship’s captain. Multiple U.S. and Japanese investigations are under way into how the guided missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald and the much larger ACX Crystal container ship collided in clear
weather south of Tokyo Bay in the early hours of June 17. The cargo ship’s captain said the ACX Crystal had signaled with flashing lights after the Fitzgerald “suddenly” steamed on to a course to cross its path. The container ship steered hard right to avoid the warship, but hit the Fitzgerald 10 minutes later at 1:30 a.m., according to a copy of Capt. Ronald Advincula’s report to Japanese ship owner Dainichi Investment Corporation.

Walsh will challenge Senate healthcare bill Without insurance, Walsh’s own experience with cancer would have bankrupted his family, he said, so he’s denouncing the bill that would cause financial ruin to others. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota
kristin.toussaint@metro.us
After the Senate’s healthcare bill was finally revealed last week, disability rights activists, representatives and others have spoken out against the action that would cut Medicaid and impose lifetime caps on “nonessential services. Included under nonessential services could be expensive cancer drugs, if a state decides that prescription drugs are not an essential health benefit, according to the American Cancer Society. That could leave cancer patients and their families in “financial ruin, the Atlantic warned.
Mayor Marty Walsh knows that devastating possibility all too well. Walsh, who is currently at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Miami, wrote a blog post over the weekend detailing his own experience with cancer and the effect it had on his family. “When I was 7, I was diagnosed with Burkitt’s lymphoma, an aggressive cancer. The doctors at Boston Children’s Hospital gave me two months to live, he wrote. “I spent four years in and out of aggressive treatments, missing second and third grade, fighting for my life when I should’ve been playing hockey. Walsh recovered because his family was able to afford that treatment, because they didn’t have to choose between providing care to their sick son or selling the car they needed to get to work, he said. But that tough choice is something this Senate healthcare bill will force on families, he added. “I can’t imagine what would’ve happened if
my family didn’t have insurance,â€? Walsh wrote. “My treatment would’ve bankrupted us.â€? Senate Republican healthcare bill would cause 22M to lose insurance President Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans in Congress have been pushing to repeal and replace Obamacare. Twenty-two million Americans would lose insurance over the next decade under the healthcare bill drafted by U.S. Senate Republicans, a nonpartisan office said on Monday, an assessment that will likely make it more difficult for the already-fraught legislation to win support for speedy passage. The Congressional Budget Office’s assessment complicates the task ahead for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who must find a way to

reconcile the demands of moderate Republicans concerned about people losing their insurance and conservative senators who say the bill does not do enough to repeal Obamacare. Several moderate Republicans, including Susan Collins of Maine, have already said they could not
support a bill that resulted in tens of millions of people losing their insurance. The CBO estimated that in 2026 49 million people would be uninsured under the Senate bill, compared with 28 million under the current law. It also estimated that the Senate bill would decrease the

budget deficit by $321 billion over 2017-2026. The CBO score is likely to amplify criticism from industry groups such as the American Hospital Association and American Medical Association, which said earlier on Monday that the Senate’s bill violated the doctors’ precept of “first, do no harm.” Republican leaders want to hold a vote on the bill before the July 4 recess that starts at the end of this week. Republicans have only a 52-seat majority in the 100-seat Senate, so McConnell can lose just two Republican senators, relying on Vice President Mike Pence to cast the tie-breaking vote. No Democratic senators have said they would back the bill. REUTERS

Why T.J. Miller really left “Silicon Valley” There is, perhaps, a more sinister reason for T.J. Miller leaving the beloved HBO series, “Silicon Valley.” Co-showrunner Mike Judge told The Hollywood Reporter that Miller was over the whole thing. “It was kind of becoming clear that he didn’t want to do the show anymore, but we wanted to leave it so that there would be an opportunity to come back at some point,” he says.
Miller’s take is that HBO offered him a scaled-down role in the upcoming season, which he turned down in favor of leaving the show, full stop. Apparently, HBO wanted to make sure T.J. had time for his standup. “They were like, ‘Let’s make this easier for both of us,’” Miller tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And I was like, ‘I think this is an amazing opportunity.’” To do other things, he means.
Kelly Osbourne, um, soiled herself Another day, another report of a pseudo celebrity pissing their pants and blaming a coffee chain that doesn’t owe said celebrity the right to pee in its damn store, anyway. Over the weekend, Kelly Osbourne was celebrating the Pride Parade in New York City. As she was marching, she found that her bladder had filled to the tippy-top — that’s how bladders work, right? — and she attempted to do what any other person would do. She went to Starbucks to take a leak. Only, according to Osbourne herself, the employees at said Starbucks refused to let her use the bathroom. So she did what any other pseudo celebrity would do: She tweeted about it with little to no context.
When you gotta go, you gotta go, man.

Penn Badgley got married again
In February, Penn Badgley — a man you may know as Dan Humphrey — married Domino Kirke. They had a very chill, very low key Brooklyn courthouse wedding. But getting married to his wife one time proved to not be INSTAGRAM/ quite enough. @TARASUMMERS The pair got married again over the weekend in a slightly more elaborate ceremony. This time it was outdoors! In Upstate New York! Mariska Hargitay (yes, Olivia Benson!) was there! Like any good Brooklyn couple that everyone is jealous of, much of their ceremony was captured and tagged on Instagram. Badgley, cheekbones and jawline just jutting out in like, really attractive perpendicular angles, writing “You only get married twice, once.” She’s right, I guess. Unless they get married a third time.
Kirke was also photographed, wearing a beige wedding gown which I’m sure looks very glorious in person, but in photographs looks like a musty curtain salvaged from someone’s attic. It’s beautiful and all, but I’d kill to have that kind of time on my hands. Planning two weddings and then getting married twice? You could binge watch so much television in that many hours. When marrying someone once isn’t enough. INSTAGRAM/@DOMINOKIRKE

Elle Fanning geeks out about Sofia Coppola The actress reunites with her “Somewhere” director with “The Beguiled.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Elle Fanning swears Sofia Coppola is a regular person. She’s one of our finest filmmakers, the creator of lush and dreamy and uncompromising films like “The Virgin Suicides” and “Lost in Translation.” You’d expect the person who made them to be lofty, poetic, maybe even pretentious. But Fanning — who’s appeared in two of them, “Somewhere” and “The Beguiled,” Coppola’s latest — knows better. “She’s so normal!” Fanning tells us. “She’s a mom and she has two daughters. She’s also really fun.” The two go way back. Fanning was 11 when she made “Somewhere,” released in 2010, playing the

young daughter of a layabout movie star (Stephen Dorff), who rarely has time for her, even though he doesn’t do much. Back then, the actress, now 19, was still an up-and-comer, poised to become as big as her sister, Dakota. “Somewhere” wasn’t just one of her first lead roles; it was the most artistic film she’d ever made. “I’d never done a movie that felt that way before, because it was so free,” Fanning recalls. Scenes were sometimes ad-
libbed, and her director was soft-spoken, gentle. And the film was arguably Coppola’s “artiest” — mostly long takes with little camera movement, even less plot than usual. “It’s when I realized films can be made that way,” Fanning says. “It’s when I started loving independent filmmaking — being creative and not
having to fit a mold. [Coppola] doesn’t fit any mold. She’s just her. She makes movies her way. People try to recreate the feelings her movies evoke, but the only one who can recreate that is Sofia.” It was the start of a beautiful friendship. “I looked up to her so much,” Fanning recalls. “She was like a cool aunt or a cool sister — just someone I respected and loved.” Their relationship has evolved over the years. By the time Fanning reunited w i t h Coppola
GETTY
Ogling Colin Farrell “The Beguiled” may still feel like a Sofia Coppola movie — light on plot, happy-yet-sad, sick with mood — but it’s different, too. Its story turns increasingly lurid, building to a shocker of an ending. Because Farrell’s character is wounded, it even includes graphic surgery scenes worthy of “The Knick.” “Sofia was like, ‘I can’t believe there’s blood on my movie set!’” Fanning recalls excitedly. Another Sofia-first: lots of ogling a hot man. While the womenfolk are covered, head-to-toe, in restrictive 19th century period garb, Farrell doffs his top early and often, all while Coppola’s camera openly leers. They even had fun with it. They did a fake “sexy calendar” shoot of Farrell, in jokey compromising positions. “It was him sawing wood shirtless, or digging holes in the garden, all while all the girls stood around laughing,” Fanning remembers. “We need to put that together. He was definitely the most naked person in this film.”
on “The Beguiled” — a loose remake of the 1971 Clint Eastwood film, with Colin Farrell as a wounded Union soldier during the Civil War rescued by the members of an all-girls school, also including Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst — the actress had turned 18. Here, she plays a teen girl who goes over and above to get with Farrell. It was even the first movie Fanning had ever
made where her mom didn’t join her on the shoot. But her main takeaway is getting to work with someone who’s watched her as she’s grown. “Sofia saw me in an older light. She became more like a girlfriend,” Fanning explains. She’d also learned to chill out a bit. “I don’t feel as nervous as I used to anymore. She’s just a friend now.”

Yotel brings tiny luxury, rooftop lounge to the Seaport The new hotel is now open in Boston.
Check out the hotel’s premium queen cabin.
CATHERINE PERLOFF @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
The Seaport, Boston’s epicenter of innovation in technology and business, just became home to Yotel, a futuristic, technology-driven hotel. Opened last week, the neighborhood’s latest luxury offering is already booking guests for its 326 cabins. The London-based hotel chain is known for transforming the feel of lavish airline travel experiences into hotel spaces, especially with its 152-square-foot cabins, more compact versions of traditional hotel rooms. Boston is Yotel’s second U.S. location, with four other hotels operating in European airports. Seven new locations around the world are in development to be opened between

2017 and 2019, including cities such as San Francisco and Dubai. “The Boston Seaport District, being known as the Innovation District, was the perfect match for us, says Christopher
Hartzell, general manager of Yotel Boston. The premium queen cabin is Yotel’s standard offering and costs $120.17 through July, with prices rising to $179 thereafter. Guests wishing for more space can find cabins available in larger — and pricier — layouts. The logic behind this compact design is to give guests “everything they need and nothing they don’t, according to the company’s website. Yotel is also uniquely technology-focused, as
guests can book their stay, check in and out, as well as enter their cabins all through the hotel’s mobile app. Additionally, airport-style kiosks are available to speed up the traditional check-in process. The Boston location also features ATOM, a “social galaxy where guests can connect with one another through their social media accounts, available for all to see on the main floor. Additionally, Yotel will be adding another rooftop destination to
the Boston skyline. Sky Lounge is an indoor-outdoor restaurant and bar on the 12th floor of Yotel, which opens up to a rooftop terrace. Guests can also grab food or a drink at the ground floor Club Lounge. The menu will change seasonally, according to Hartzell. “The most amazing thing is our terrace, Hartzell says. “The views of Boston are stunning. Located across from One Seaport Square with direct access to the Courthouse Station Silver Line

Cambridge’s Story Space turns 25 Listen to fascinating tales from locals every week. HENRY JANI @MetroBOS
letters@metro.us
For the past 25 years, Story Space has created a platform for storytellers of all kinds to share their work to a receptive and respectful audience. “Brother Blue and his wife Ruth started this back in 1992, says Story Space organizer Mike Cohen. “They created a place where people could come off the street and tell their stories, and there was no place like that before. Story Space was originally hosted at the Out of The Blue Art Gallery on Prospect Street, before moving to the new Out of The Blue Too near Central Square, where they meet every Tuesday. Cohen explains that each evening is a

stories. While a particular storyteller may bring you in the door, the open session gives voice to anyone who wishes to share. Names are put into a bin at the beginning of the night and those who are selected are given eight uninterrupted minutes to con-

“We also have special times for first-time tellers, says Cohen. “They get up there and realize how powerful telling their story can be. And in a world where everything is becoming faster, digitized and ephemeral, Cohen believes there are two tenets to storytelling that will allow the craft to survive forever. First, he believes that storytelling is integral to all forms of human art. “Song, d a n c e , book or p l a y , there’s a story in vey t h e r e , their Cohen stosays. “And r y . storytellF i c ing is comtional municating or real, Storyteller Barbara that story to othfantasy Aliprantis and Story Space co-founder Ruth Hill. ers. or folk, evSecond, and eryone and probably most crucial every type of tale is ento the poignancy of couraged at Story Space.

storytelling, is that stories are interactive and craved by humankind. He explains that interaction between the teller and the audience is critical for this type of artwork. Also, the fact that a story changes every time it is told keeps people coming back and has encouraged the revival of poetry slams and similar events. “We all know that little kids love stories, says Cohen. “But adults, I’ve found, are deprived. They’re skeptical at first, but we sit them down and tell them a good story. Their reactions are always the best.

Forget coconut oil These healthy fats are actually good for your heart. KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn
kate.mooney@metro.us
When it comes to heart health, fat is no longer automatically a bad
thing. In fact, it can be good for your heart — depending on what kind. Last week, the American Heart Association released a presidential advisory which showed that a diet of healthy fats is crucial to maintaining good cardiovascular health.
The AHA committee looked at over 100 reports from the 1950s to the present and found that swapping out saturated fats for mono and polyunsaturated fats can lower LDL, or “bad cholesterol levels, and reduce the risk of cardiac events by 30 percent — as much as

cholesterol-lowering statin drugs. One major finding: The much-touted healthy fad coconut oil actually contains 82 percent saturated fat and studies have shown it to raise cholesterol levels as much as butter, beef fat and palm oil. With this new information, it’s time to make some changes to what we eat on a daily basis. Cardiologist Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, director of women’s heart health at Lenox Hill Hospital, talked us through a game plan for a heart healthy diet and lifestyle.
Swap out saturated fats for unsaturated fats Saturated fat is found mostly in animal products, including red meat and dairy, and in coconut oil. It increases the LDL cholesterol in the bloodstream, which can clog your arteries and cause heart disease. The AHA advises that American consume less that 10 percent of daily calories in saturated fat. Instead, you want to replace it with foods
high in unsaturated fats, which can lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease, Steinbaum explains. She names choices like avocado, (more than 75 percent unsaturated fat), beans and nuts. If you’re going to eat meat, go for lean meats, such as turkey, chicken and fish, and have red meat seldom, Steinbaum advises. Fish is high in omega-3 fatty acid, which also decreases cholesterol.
Oils to use in place of coconut oil Olive oil, vegetable oil, safflower oil, corn oil and canola oil are all heart-healthy choices, says Steinbaum. Canola oil is actually the lowest in saturated fat (7 percent).
What else should you do for your heart health?
Make sure you’re not replacing your unhealthy fats with other junk. “Never substitute fats for sugars, she warns. When it comes to carbs, stick to multigrains — which also work to
lower LDL — as opposed to starches. Think: wheat, quinoa, instead of white bread, pasta. If you drink, keep it moderate, which means, one 4-to-6 ounce glass of wine a day for women, two a day for men, Steinbaum says, which can be somewhat beneficial to the heart by reducing blood pressure and preventing blood clotting. But “if you don’t drink, don’t start, she says. “Drinking too much can have toxic effects on the heart. Exercisewise, Steinbaum says the American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of “moderate intensity exercise a week (30 minutes, five days a week). That’s defined as anything that gets your heart rate up 50 to 75 percent of your maximum heart rate (varies based on age and individual), such as brisk walking. If you’re doing high intensity workouts that get your heart rate up to 85 percent — cardio, like running and swimming — the recommendation is 75 minutes a week (about three days a week at 20-30 minutes a day).

CELTICS’ OFFSEASON QUITE UGLY IN THE EARLY STAGES OPINION
MATT BURKE @burke_metro
Danny Ainge said a couple weeks back that the Celtics would not “punt” on the next few seasons just because the Warriors and Cavs are on an entirely different level. It’s true. So far this offseason, Ainge and the Celtics haven’t punted. They’ve taken a knee on fourth-and-10. A whole hell of a lot can and will change as soon as the end of this week (free agency begins on July 1), and Ainge could come out of it looking like a genius. But as of this moment, the members of the Celtics front office look like big-talking fools. We’ve been promised “fireworks” since Kris Humphries, Phil Pressey and Vitor Faverani were key members of the Boston roster, and while Ainge has swung terrific trades for Isaiah Thomas and Jae Crowder since that time, the cashing in of all these assets he raves about simply has not happened. It is now entirely conceivable that the Celtics will whiff on major free agents like Gordon Hayward and Blake Griffin in the coming days, and their big offseason acquisition will be 19-year-old Jayson Tatum. The Celtics already came up emp-

ty-handed in the Jimmy Butler sweepstakes as Minnesota gave up Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn and the No. 7 overall pick in exchange for Butler and the 16th pick. Ainge could have easily come up with a better package than that for Butler. Now, the only gamechanger left on the trade market is Paul George, who has just one year left on his contract. The cost for a glorified “rental” will be low, and it’s actually a gamble I think the Celtics should roll the dice on. But it just feels like the Celtics have lost their leverage with every team in the league right now.

JAYSON TATUM AVERAGED 16.8 POINTS PER GAME AT DUKE When the C’s secured the No. 1 pick in the lottery in May, we were told that Ainge “controlled the draft,” “controlled free agency” and “controlled the trade market.”
Now? Celtics fans are hitching their wagon to a 19-year-old kid who makes Isaiah Thomas look like Joe Dumars on the defensive end. There are also some whispers around the league that the Phoenix Suns punked Ainge and the Celtics at the draft. Two days prior to the Sixers-Celtics trade, ESPN’s Chad Ford reported that the Celtics were locked in on Josh Jackson, thinking he was the best player in

the draft. Jackson kept cancelling workout with the Celtics — reportedly at the urging of the Suns. The Celtics passed on Jackson at No. 3, and the Suns grabbed him at No. 4. Maybe the Ford report was wrong and the Celtics had their eyes on Tatum the whole time, but nonetheless these Jackson rumors are troubling. The Celtics may have given up the No. 1 overall pick in a draft, bypassing Markelle Fultz and Jackson — who both

could emerge as generational talents. Ainge usually comes out on top when it comes to “pulling the wool” over other teams’ eyes. He did it to the Suns in the Thomas trade, actually. But it just feels like the Celtics were suckers before and during the draft. Only time will tell, of course, and Ainge’s track record suggests that he’ll have the last laugh. The skepticism in Boston right now is growing, though.

Consistency is still difficult to find for Sox The Red Sox are just over .500 in the month of June. MATT BURKE @burke_metro
matthew.burke@metro.us
The Red Sox started the week tied with the Yankees for first place in the AL East, and they’ve shown signs that they’re title contenders during the month of June. Despite all the good will and all of the “Are the Sox about to get hot?” stories, though, Boston is just 12-11 this month. For every giant step forward (winning two of three at Houston), there are significant steps backward (losing two of three at Kansas City and two of three at home to the Angels). The Sox have a four-game set against
the AL Central-leading Minnesota Twins (39-34) this week before facing division rival Toronto in Canada, starting on Friday. Drew Pomeranz (6-4, 4.07 ERA) will get the ball for the Sox on Tuesday. The Twins will counter with Hector Santiago (4-6, 5.26 ERA). Rick Porcello (4-9, 5.00 ERA) will toe the mound for the Sox on Wednesday against Minnesota. Porcello bounced back from an ugly 7-1 loss to the Astros on June 17 with a victory over the Angels last Friday night at Fenway. In that game, Porcello allowed three earned runs on eight hits while striking out eight. “It’s always hard to come back in four days and completely correct what you’re trying to

Trade season As we inch closer to July, expect the Red Sox trade rumor mill to crank up. The first whisper
comes courtesy of Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan, who wrote this week that the Red Sox “have quietly sent some of their most respected evaluators to Sonny Gray’s last two starts.” Gray, the 27-year-old righty of the Oakland A’s, has been linked to the Sox for several years. “This could fall under standard due diligence, but one source familiar with their intentions said the Red Sox are keen for Gray — and when president Dave Dombrowski targets a player, the price for other teams jumps accordingly.” Gray projected as one of the better young pitchers in baseball a few years back as he had a 2.73 season ERA and a 14-7 record in 2015. But last year, Gray went just 5-11 with a 5.69 ERA and this year he owns a 4.45 ERA with a 3-3 record.
