SUPREME COURT REVIVES SHIP STAYED ON COLLISION AMTRAK NAMES FORMER TRUMP TRAVEL BAN COURSE DESPITE WARNING DELTA EXECUTIVE AS CEO

1

The U.S. Supreme Court handed a victory to President Donald Trump by allowing his temporary ban on travelers from six Muslim-majority countries and all refugees to go into effect for people with no strong ties to the United States while agreeing to decide this fall the legality of the order. The case represents a major test of presidential powers. The justices, in their unsigned decision, granted parts of the Trump

administration’s emergency request to put the order into effect immediately while the legal battle continues. The court, which narrowed the scope of lower court rulings that had completely blocked his March 6 executive order, said it would hear arguments in October on the lawfulness of one of Trump’s signature policies.

A U.S. warship struck by a container vessel in Japanese waters failed to respond to warning signals or take evasive action before a collision that killed seven of its crew, according to a report by the Philippine cargo ship’s captain. Multiple U.S. and Japanese investigations are under way into how the guided missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald and the much larger ACX Crystal container ship collided in clear

weather south of Tokyo Bay in the early hours of June 17. The cargo ship’s captain said the ACX Crystal had signaled with flashing lights after the Fitzgerald “suddenly” steamed on to a course to cross its path. The container ship steered hard right to avoid the warship, but hit the Fitzgerald 10 minutes later at 1:30 a.m., according to a copy of Capt. Ronald Advincula’s report to Japanese ship owner Dainichi Investment Corporation.

Facebook Inc. is in talks with Hollywood studios about producing scripted, TV-quality shows, with an aim of launching original programing by late summer, the Wall Street Journal reported. The social networking giant has indicated that it was willing to commit to production budgets as high as $3 million per episode, in meetings with Hollywood talent agencies, the Journal reported, citing people familiar with the

matter. Facebook is hoping to target audiences from ages 13 to 34, with a focus on the 17 to 30 range. The company has already lined up “Strangers,” a relationship drama, and a game show, “Last State Standing,” the report said. “We’re focused on episodic shows and helping all our partners understand what works across different verticals and topics,” said Nick Grudin, Facebook’s vice president for media partnerships.

Female artists use erotica to break barriers and reclaim sexuality Untitled Space’s “Secret Garden” exhibit emphasizes women’s decadeslong uphill battle for equality and freedom of expression. NIKKI M. MASCALI @MetroNewYork

Since the election, female-identifying artists have joined forces at the Untitled Space gallery in Tribeca to use their medium of choice to rise up and resist, focus on positivity and now, address the double standards and restric-

tions they face when it comes to their own sexuality. It’s important to “emphasize how the female gaze on erotic differs than that of the ‘male gaze,’ which tends to objectify women,” gallery founder Indira Cesarine said of “Secret Garden: The Female Gaze on Erotica,” which opens Tuesday. Nearly 50 artists are featured, from feminist icons like Betty Tompkins and Joan Semmel to emerging names fighting the same fight those women did against censorship and taboos decades ago. “The goal is that all sexualities are allowed to perform and

be themselves freely,” said Leah Schrager, who will display digital paintings manipulated using Photoshop and printed on aluminum. “It’s a beautiful thing to see women performing, owning, claiming, sharing their sexuality. It is about freedom, expression and love.” Though pieces range from paintings and photography to poetry and sculpture to video and mixed media, Cesarine was looking for artists who “fearlessly explore sexual themes.” “It was important for the artwork to convey a dialogue of sexual exploration or touch on the family experience of sexuality in some way,” she added.

While some may hear “erotica” and think it's synonymous with “pornography,” the two are “vastly different,” Cesarine said. Whereas pornography leaves “little to

the imagination, erotica can be very subtle … very interpretative. I think the only crossover really is that they both can relate to sex — but erotica does not necessarily have to be sexually explicit,” she added. “My paintings in

so many colors, slightly unfocused and watery, like a glimpse into a dream,” Fahren Feingold said. The exhibit title was inspired by Nancy Friday’s 1973 book, “My Secret Garden: Women’s Sexual Fantasies,”

which impacted Cesarine when she read it as a teenager. “This type of art has gained even more significance as women today fight an upwards battle towards equality, fight to keep personal choices as personal versus that of the government and fight for freedom of expression as essential for progress,” she said. For Feingold, the show means “breaking barriers and stereotypes placed on women by others who have no concept of what makes us who we are.” “Secret Garden: The Female Gaze on Erotica” will be open June 27-July 30 at Untitled Space (45 Lispenard St., Unit 1W).

HARLEM Move to rename Harlem neighborhood sparks outrage over erasing black history New York City real estate companies’ attempts to rename a Harlem neighborhood “SoHa” have enraged longtime residents of the historically black enclave, who say the move erases the community’s rich cultural history. The neighborhood served as home and inspiration to generations of leading African Americans, including activists W.E.B. Du Bois and Malcolm X, who dubbed it

“Seventh Heaven.” Artists such as poet Langston Hughes and singers Harry Belafonte and Ella Fitzgerald also lived there. The “SoHa” name, echoing the high-priced, largely white Manhattan neighborhood of SoHo in lower Manhattan, has begun appearing in real estate listings for apartments located between 110th Street and 125th Street, and Realtor Keller Williams boasts a “SoHa Team” of agents on its website. Keller Williams did not

respond to a request for comment. Harlem’s U.S. Congressman Adriano Espaillat vowed to introduce a House resolution to protect Harlem from being renamed. “#WeRHarlem! And we refuse to be called by any other name! #NY13 #HarlemStrong,” @ RepEspaillat wrote on Twitter on Monday. The tweet accompanied a photograph of the famed Apollo Theater, where Fitzgerald made her singing debut at age 17 on Amateur Night in 1934.

Espaillat said the congressional resolution he plans to introduce this week “supports imposing limitations on the ability to change the name of a neighborhood based on economic gain.” “I along with leaders and constituents of this community stand united to vigorously oppose the renaming Harlem in yet another sanctioned gentrification,” he said in an email. “This is an incredibly insulting attempt to disown Harlem’s longtime residents, legacy, and culture.” REUTERS

Days before Joseph Ponte is set to leave New York City’s Department of Correction, records showed that the embattled commissioner worked from his vacation home in Maine for nearly 30 days last year. Ponte claimed to have worked 11½ hours each day on many of the 29 days he said he was working from his home in Wiscasset, Maine. In doing so, he banked 182 unused hours of vacation time, which he can now cash in for about $20,000, according to his payroll records that were obtained by the New York Daily News. Ponte is stepping down Wednesday after three years amid a series of scandals that includes allegations that he and other officials improperly used

city-issued vehicles for personal travel and that the DOC spied on city investigators. He announced his plans to resign last month. A source told the Daily News that Ponte’s hours are being examined by the Department of Investigation, which is looking at his phone and email records on the days he claimed to work from Maine. An April 28 report from the DOI discovered that Ponte was out of state for a total of 90 days last year; 35 of them were workdays. The DOC does not have a recorded telecommuting policy and requests are at “management’s discretion,” DOC officials told the Daily News. While Ponte was out of state, 27 inmate slashings, three correction officer slashings and the death of one on-duty staff member occurred, according to the DOI. Two of the slashings occurred on Aug. 27 in two different DOC facilities. Ponte, according to his payroll records, claimed to have worked 14 hours from his Maine home the following day. Records show Ponte sold the Victorian Wiscasset home in March for nearly $299,000.

Senate Republican healthcare bill would cause 22M to lose insurance President Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans in Congress have been pushing to repeal and replace Obamacare. Twenty-two million Americans would lose insurance over the next decade under the healthcare bill drafted by U.S. Senate Republicans, a nonpartisan office said on Monday, an assessment that will likely make it more difficult for the already-fraught legislation to win support for speedy passage. The Congressional Budget Office’s assessment complicates the task ahead for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who must find a way to

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell GETTY IMAGES

reconcile the demands of moderate Republicans concerned about people losing their insurance and conservative senators who say the bill does not do enough to repeal Obamacare. Several moderate Republicans, including Susan Collins of Maine, have already said they could not

support a bill that resulted in tens of millions of people losing their insurance. The CBO estimated that in 2026 49 million people would be uninsured under the Senate bill, compared with 28 million under the current law. It also estimated that the Senate bill would decrease the

budget deficit by $321 billion over 2017-2026. The CBO score is likely to amplify criticism from industry groups such as the American Hospital Association and American Medical Association, which said earlier on Monday that the Senate’s bill violated the doctors’ precept of “first, do no harm.” Republican leaders want to hold a vote on the bill before the July 4 recess that starts at the end of this week. Republicans have only a 52-seat majority in the 100-seat Senate, so McConnell can lose just two Republican senators, relying on Vice President Mike Pence to cast the tie-breaking vote. No Democratic senators have said they would back the bill. REUTERS

On the day that tens of thousands marched in or cheered on the 48th annual NYC Pride March, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo unveiled his plans for the state’s first official LGBTQ monument. Artist Anthony Goicolea will create the memorial, which will be located in Hudson River Park. It aims to honor the LGBTQ community, those who were killed in the June 2016 shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, as well as other victims of hate, violence and intolerance, a statement from the governor said. “This monument will serve as an enduring symbol of the role New Yorkers play in building a fairer, more just world,” Cuomo said.

“From Stonewall to marriage equality, New York has always been a beacon for justice, and we will never waver in our commitment to the LGBT community and to creating a more just and inclusive society.” Goicolea’s design will consist of nine boulders, some of which will be bisected with glass that will create prisms to project rainbow patterns on nearby surroundings. The Brooklyn-based artist told The New York Times that Stonehenge and Easter Island were among his inspirations for its creation. “I wanted to create a space that feels familiar, even though it is new,” he said. “I wanted something usable and functional, and that was not going to take away part of the space.” After the Pulse attack on June 26, 2016, in which 49 people were killed, Cuomo created the 10-member LGBT Memorial Commission and announced plans for the monument. Submissions for the memorial began being accepted last October.

“I wanted to create a space that feels familiar, even though it is new,” he said. “I wanted something usable and functional, and that was not going to take away part of the space.” Anthony Goicolea

Czech Republic power plant hosts intern bikini contest

Because how else do you pick interns? ERIN TIERNAN @ErinTiernan

erin.tiernan@metro.us

When it came time for a Czech nuclear power station to choose its summer interns, they decided to host a bikini contest. Czech power conglomerate CEZ couldn’t quite narrow down the pool of candidates, so they asked 10 female applicants to don swimwear and pose inside a cooling tower — don’t worry, they were sure to make the women, all recent high-school graduates, wear hardhats and closed-toe shoes. Safety first, after all. From there, the company posted the photos on its Facebook page and asked its followers to vote for their favorite candidate, with the most popular winning a 14-day internship at the plant. No word on what daily work attire would have been. A press release for the bikini contest and photo shoot likened it to past cultural enrichment programs by the plant like when it hosted the Bohemian Philharmonic at its plant in South Bohemia. The release said the women “greatly enjoyed” the experience, according to

a German news report on the bikini contest. Sexual harassment in male-dominated industries has grabbed headlines in the U.S. recently with the firing of Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, but this power conglomerate’s plan didn’t exactly earn it much backlash — at least at first. A local Czech television news station even ran a flattering feature on the scheme. Czech social media caught up, however causing CEZ to have some second thoughts and the plant operator has apologized for using a Facebook bikini contest to choose their next intern. “We did not want anyone to feel upset. The purpose of the competition was to introduce a nontraditional environment and support technical education. However, if the original vision raised doubts or concerns, we are very sorry about it,” a CEZ spokesman told CNET. The operators of the 2,000-megawatt plant offered all finalists an internship. “The purpose of the competition was to promote technical education. But if the original vision raised doubts or concerns, we are very sorry,” the operators posted on Facebook.

Demand Soars At NYC Medical Clinic

Can This Medical Technology Possibly Eliminate Or

The Advanced Medical Treatment Every Back & Neck Pain Sufferer Needs To Know NYC Pain MD is a medical clinic with two locations in New York City that has made a name for itself by treating the worst cases of back or neck pain. Here is what every back and neck pain sufferer who has failed to respond to other treatments and does not want surgery should know about one of the best treatment options available today for severe back and neck pain including when, why and where you should consider this treatment to get maximum results. If you suffer with back, neck or nerve pain, you have probably already tried many treatments ... especially countless pain medications. Experienced doctors understand that even though pain medications such as antiin ammatory pain pills are part of the recommended early treatment plan for back pain... they are rarely the answer. In most cases they have minimal, short term results (if any) and have a laundry list of potential side effects. Some being serious and even life threatening.

Are there any better options? Thankfully, advancements in science and technology come extremely fast. And now there is very good option to help relieve the pain. An option that a lot of back and neck pain sufferers may have never heard of before. Before we get into these

treatments, please understand this... NYC Pain MD is a REAL medical clinic that has treated the worst cases of back pain. Patients travel from all over to be treated at one of their clinics for all sorts of joint and muscle pain because they want the best medical treatments available. What you are about to discover is a REAL medical treatment. Not some miracle cure you see on infomercials or on the internet. Know this fact: There is no one treatment that will help every case of back pain. And we cannot guarantee this treatment will work for you. But this treatment has already helped countless back and neck pain sufferers who had given up hope. I bet many just like you. What is this treatment? It’s called... Radiofrequency Neurotomy “Radiofrequncy Neurotomy” is often referred to as RF for short. -XVW ZKDW LV 5) RF is a procedure that is based on the FRQFHSW that blocking the nerve supply to the painful area may alleviate pain and restore function. There are many nerves around your spine and one of their jobs is to sense PAIN. Radiofrequency waves are delivered to these nerves under advanced imaging to “block” the nerves DQG VORZ GRZQ WKH SDLQ Two procedures are performed. First, a test, diagnostic “Block” procedure is done to determine if the procedure is going to decrease

pain and improve function. If this rst “test” procedure is successful, the Radio Frequency Neurotomy is scheduled and performed for longer term relief.

What Results Can You Expect? Like all real medical procedures... results vary for individual patients. No good and ethical doctor would guarantee any exact results for any procedure... that’s just not how things work and it would be less than honest. That’s being said, it is not uncommon for patients to get complete, if not signi cant relief of their pain shortly after the treatment.

How Long Do The Results Last? This procedure “LPSDLWV” the nerves pain signals... it does not destroy them. Therefore, the results are safe but not completely permanent. But, many patients get relief for 6 months… 12 months…. 18 months for somH even longer. The great news is - another procedure can be safely preformed for more relief if necessary. While we cannot claim this is a complete “permanent cure” . . . it can be a godsend for so many who were in constant pain. Really... what would it be worth iI you could get out of pain for long enough so you could start enjoying your everyday life again? Would it be worth it to be

able to nally get a good night s sleep again? How about being able to go for a simple walk or just do your basic daily chores without worrying about so much pain?

Is It Safe? Yes. This procedure has been done countless times and continues to have an excellent safety record. It is minimally invasive and iV QRW VXUJLFDO

Who Should Try This Treatment? RF should be considered after other treatments, such as anti in ammatory pain medication and physical therapy do not offer good enough results. RF has also been found effective AFTER back surgery when patient’s still feel pain. The pain after a failed back surgery can be debilitating for some and this procedure may be the only thing that helps give you relief.

What To Do Next If You Are In Pain And The “X” Factor Here is the “X” factor many do not consider that might be the difference between you getting the best possible treatment or not. Many experts suggest choosing a medical clinic that offers all these treatments and has the proper, most advanced technology all under one roof without the need for a surgical center or hospital.

Pharma Bro’s bragging to the FBI may sway his trial, now underway He resembles his hero Donald Trump in more ways than one. MICHAEL MARTIN @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

Martin Shkreli, the reviled “Pharma Bro” who raised the price of an HIV drug from $13.50 to $750 a pill overnight, is an avowed Trump supporter. The disgraced pharmaceutical CEO might have something fundamentally in common with the president: A tendency to say the inadvisable boast about himself that might put him in legal jeopardy. Shkreli is on trial for securities fraud, which began Monday in Brooklyn. Prosecutors accuse him of using $11 million in stock from Retrophin, a company he

founded and was fired from in 2014, to pay off investors who lost money. Robert Capers, then the U.S. attorney in Brooklyn, said Shkreli had conducted “a Ponzi scheme.” Shkreli has pleaded not guilty. But experts say he has not helped his case by giving an interview to the FBI, without a lawyer, to brag about his accomplishments. According to Bloomberg, he requested a meeting in 2015 and told agents that he had made a fortune in pharmaceuticals, built a “billion-dollar company … single-handedly,” was “smart and resourceful” and the “best asset” the company had. Shkreli does not lack for confidence. Testifying before a Congressional committee about drug prices, he called

his questioners “imbeciles” on Twitter. He was banned from Twitter for harassing a female journalist. He has compared himself to O.J. Simpson,

and says he’ll be found not guilty because he’s famous. The Ponzi trial is unrelated to his machinations at his later

company, Turing Pharmaceuticals, where he jacked up the price for a decades-old drug used by HIV patients by 5,000 percent.

Because of his loose lips, the federal government may be able to use Shkreli’s words against him in court. Lawyers usually tell their clients to keep their mouths shut and avoid speaking to the FBI on their own. “Having been on both sides, there’s ordinarily no benefit to a person in this situation to speak with the government without counsel,” said Scott Klugman, a former federal prosecutor in Brooklyn. “A potential target is often not aware of the risks.” Shkreli may be more than a Trump supporter — perhaps a psychic twin. Bloomberg reported that Retrophin fired Shkreli in part because he shared too much information on the internet. The board of directors had asked him to stop tweeting.

Sean Spicer draws heat off camera White House spokesman Sean Spicer drew the ire of some reporters on Monday for banning cameras from daily press briefings as part of what Spicer called an effort to vary the routine. “Why are the cameras off, Sean? Why did you turn them off ?” shouted CNN correspondent Jim Acosta. Other reporters chimed in. “You are a taxpayerfunded spokesman for the United States government — can you at least give us an explanation for why the cameras are off ?” Acosta asked. Spicer answered questions for audio only about President Donald Trump’s healthcare overhaul bill, a Supreme Court ruling on Trump’s travel ban, and Trump’s tweets about investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Still cameras were allowed in but TV cameras were not, a practice Spicer started a few weeks ago. On Friday, CNN sent a courtroom sketch artist to capture the scene and make a point. White House briefings have been open to live television broadcasts since the presidency of Bill Clinton in the 1990s when then-press secretary Mike McCurry decided to

make them available to general viewership. In more recent years McCurry has publicly questioned whether he made the right decision. Spicer has complained reporters do too much grandstanding for the cameras. He told reporters there was nothing wrong with mixing up the routine. “Some days we’ll have it - some days we won’t,” Spicer said, noting Trump would be speaking later alongside India’s prime minister. “I want the president’s voice to carry the day.” The White House Correspondents’ Association has urged Spicer to keep the briefing televised in the interests of transparency and a healthy democracy. Why T.J. Miller really left “Silicon Valley” There is, perhaps, a more sinister reason for T.J. Miller leaving the beloved HBO series, “Silicon Valley.” Co-showrunner Mike Judge told The Hollywood Reporter that Miller was over the whole thing. “It was kind of becoming clear that he didn’t want to do the show anymore, but we wanted to leave it so that there would be an opportunity to come back at some point,” he

Apparently, HBO wanted to make sure T.J. had time for his stand-up. “They were like, ‘Let’s make this easier for both of us,’” Miller tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And I was like, ‘I think this is

She went to Starbucks to take a leak. Only, according to Osbourne herself, the employees at said Starbucks refused to let her use the bathroom. So she did what any other pseudo celebrity would do: She tweeted about it with little to no context.

Elle Fanning geeks out over Sofia Coppola The actress reunites with her “Somewhere” director with “The Beguiled.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Elle Fanning swears Sofia Coppola is a regular person. She’s one of our finest filmmakers, the creator of lush and dreamy and uncompromising films like “The Virgin Suicides” and “Lost in Translation.” You’d expect the person who made them to be lofty, poetic, maybe even pretentious. But Fanning — who’s appeared in two of them, “Somewhere” and “The Beguiled,” Coppola’s latest — knows better. “She’s so normal!” Fanning tells us. “She’s a mom and she has two daughters. She’s also really fun.” The two go way back. Fanning was 11 when she made “Somewhere,” released in 2010, playing the

young daughter of a layabout movie star (Stephen Dorff), who rarely has time for her, even though he doesn’t do much. Back then, the actress, now 19, was still an up-and-comer, poised to become as big as her sister, Dakota. “Somewhere” wasn’t just one of her first lead roles; it was the most artistic film she’d ever made. “I’d never done a movie that felt that way before, because it was so free,” Fanning recalls. Scenes were sometimes ad-

libbed, and her director was soft-spoken, gentle. And the film was arguably Coppola’s “artiest” — mostly long takes with little camera movement, even less plot than usual. “It’s when I realized films can be made that way,” Fanning says. “It’s when I started loving independent filmmaking — being creative and not

having to fit a mold. [Coppola] doesn’t fit any mold. She’s just her. She makes movies her way. People try to recreate the feelings her movies evoke, but the only one who can recreate that is Sofia.” It was the start of a beautiful friendship. “I looked up to her so much,” Fanning recalls. “She was like a cool aunt or a cool sister — just someone I respected and loved.” Their relationship has evolved over the years. By the time Fanning reunited w i t h Coppola

GETTY

Ogling Colin Farrell “The Beguiled” may still feel like a Sofia Coppola movie — light on plot, happy-yet-sad, sick with mood — but it’s different, too. Its story turns increasingly lurid, building to a shocker of an ending. Because Farrell’s character is wounded, it even includes graphic surgery scenes worthy of “The Knick.” “Sofia was like, ‘I can’t believe there’s blood on my movie set!’” Fanning recalls excitedly. Another Sofia-first: lots of ogling a hot man. While the womenfolk are covered, head-to-toe, in restrictive 19th-century period garb, Farrell doffs his top early and often, all while Coppola’s camera openly leers. They even had fun with it. They did a fake “sexy calendar” shoot of Farrell, in jokey compromising positions. “It was him sawing wood shirtless or digging holes in the garden, all while all the girls stood around laughing,” Fanning remembers. “We need to put that together. He was definitely the most naked person in this film.”

on “The Beguiled” — a loose remake of the 1971 Clint Eastwood film, with Colin Farrell as a wounded Union soldier during the Civil War rescued by the members of an all-girls school, also including Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst — the actress had turned 18. Here, she plays a teen girl who goes over and above to get with Farrell. It was even the first movie Fanning had ever

made where her mom didn’t join her on the shoot. But her main takeaway is getting to work with someone who’s watched her as she’s grown. “Sofia saw me in an older light. She became more like a girlfriend,” Fanning explains. She’d also learned to chill out a bit. “I don’t feel as nervous as I used to anymore. She’s just a friend now.”

Drinking is better outdoors, that’s just a fact, and while waterfront bars and rooftops are an essential summer rite, they’re missing the illicit thrill of drinking out in the open. Now you can stop risking the NYPD’s wrath by sneaking booze into parks. The South Street Seaport just became a Bourbon Street-style open container paradise thanks to a self-pour beer station on Front Street. The selection of 20 brews is curated by Clinton Hall, the popular Financial District beer hall known for its all-burger menu, towering waffles and constantly changing list of international brews that just opened a twofloor seasonal outpost in the Seaport.

“Clinton Hall is known for their super craft beer, but this [station] will have much more recognizable beer brands, plus five or six that are not as recognizable, explains Jeremy Lieberman, director of marketing at Lure Group, which is overseeing all of the new projects at the Seaport this summer. To get started, you must go inside Clinton Hall and hand over a credit card (and ID) to the staff, who’ll give you an RFID card. Tap that against the screen of the beer you want and select how much you’d like, anywhere between a 1-ounce sample up to 32 ounces per brew. Need a little guidance? The screens also display information about each beer. Once you’ve chosen your beer, enjoy it anywhere within the cordoned off area from South to Water streets and Front to Beacon streets. The self-pour station isn’t your only summer drinking option. For those who prefer cocktails or

wine, an outdoor Garden Bar draped with vines has popped up in the heart of the Seaport. For that true New Orleans feel, you need outdoor music, and the Seaport’s free Summer Concert Series is already underway, bringing bands and DJs to the outdoor stage across from the Garden Bar on Thursdays (6-8 p.m.) and Saturdays (4-6 p.m.) through Sept. 30. Clinton Hall also brought outdoor games like a pingpong table and cornhole. As for some walkingaround food, Black Tap has stationed a milkshakesonly truck right next to the self-pour station and soon, another summer essential will return when Ambrose Beer & Lobster reopens. “You’ll be able to get your lobster rolls and crab rolls and a few other awesome things, says Lieberman. “What you’ll do is you’ll grab your roll, go to the self-pour or the Garden Bar, and you’ll have a good day.

Summer sports safety for kids kind of elite sports, then they drink to thirst.

ASK MOUNT SINAI Stay Healthy You have medical questions? We have answers. Metro is teaming up with the experts at the esteemed Mount Sinai hospital to provide answers to New Yorkers’ most pressing medical concerns. Send us an email at askmtsinai@ metro.us. We’ll select one question and publish an answer every other week.

School’s out, which means summer sports are about to kick into high gear. While kids are swimming, playing soccer, tennis or attending camp for any number of other sports, outdoor safety is key to a healthy, fun experience. To find out what parents, coaches and kids need to look out for, we spoke with two Mount Sinai Health System experts who work with the United States Tennis Association: Dr. James Gladstone, co-chief of the Sports Medicine Service and associate professor of orthopedic surgery; and Dr. Melissa Leber, assistant professor of sports medicine and emergency medicine, and director of emergency department sports medicine at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s and Mount Sinai West. What’s most important about kids playing outside in elevated temperatures? Dr. Leber: Water’s gonna be the best thing for kids. Then they need carbohydrate replacement with a watered down Gatoradetype drink or something with electrolytes in it. It really depends on the age of the child. A very, very physically active teenager requires 6 liters of water a day. If a child is just out for fun for a little bit of time and not doing any

HEALTH

How high does the humidity need to be before it’s just not healthy to be outside? Leber: There’s no one level of humidity. It’s a matter of being able to recognize the symptoms of heat-related illness that an athlete or a parent will know when to come inside. If they’re getting any of these symptoms to take a break or get cold water and take a rest. I think the higher the humidity, the more attuned you have to be to your symptoms.

be kids in the summer, and go out and play and do all kinds of sports. As sports-medicine specialists, we see more and more younger kids coming in with problems because they’re playing one specific sport year round. Summer is a good time to decompress; if you’re a soccer player, swim and play tennis. I think ultimately doing other sports will improve your ability in your primary sport. You develop a lot better.

Suffering From Fibroids?

And what are those symptoms? Leber: Headache. Feeling more fatigue than they would normally feel outside. Dr. Gladstone: Profuse sweating that’s not being replaced with water, because certainly when people get completely dehydrated they stop sweating. When you stop sweating, it can bring on heatstroke.

Heavy Bleeding Bleeding Between Periods Bloating, Protruding Belly Pelvic Pain Reproductive Dysfunction

What about dressing for the weather? Leber: Make sure that kids outside in the summer wear white or light colors to help reflect the sun, and also wear sweat wicking clothing. Those can help maintain cool temperatures. Gladstone: You know, one thing that’s been talked about some is how people are wearing these tighter, long sleeves, long pants. They’ve seen LeBron James wearing them and it looks cool. I think to wear that in hot weather, you gotta be careful about that. That’s just increasing your body temperature immeasurably. MAKE HEALTHY YOUR NEW HAPPY

Forget coconut oil These healthy fats are actually good for your heart. KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn

kate.mooney@metro.us

When it comes to heart health, fat is no longer automatically a bad thing. In fact, it can be good for your heart — depending on the kind. Last week, the American Heart Association released a presidential advisory which showed that a diet of healthy fats is crucial to maintaining good cardiovascular health. The AHA committee looked at over 100 reports from the 1950s to the present and found that swapping out saturated fats for mono and polyunsaturated fats can lower LDL, or “bad cholesterol levels, and reduce the risk of cardiac events by 30 percent — as much as cholesterol-lowering statin drugs. One major finding: The much-touted healthy fad coconut oil actually contains 82 percent saturated fat, and studies have shown it to raise cholesterol levels as much

as butter, beef fat and palm oil. With this new information, it’s time to make some changes to what we eat on a daily basis. Cardiologist Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, director of women’s heart health at Lenox Hill Hospital, talked us through a game plan for a heart-healthy diet and lifestyle.

Swap out saturated fats for unsaturated fats

Saturated fat is found mostly in animal products, including red meat and dairy, and in coconut oil. It increases the LDL cholesterol in the bloodstream, which can clog your arteries and cause heart disease. The AHA advises that American consume less that 10 percent of daily calories in saturated fat. Instead, you want to replace it with foods high in unsaturated fats, which can lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease, Steinbaum explains. She names choices like avocado, (more than 75 percent unsaturated fat), beans and nuts. If you’re going to eat meat, go for lean

wellbeing meats, such as turkey, chicken and fish, and seldom have red meat, Steinbaum advises. Fish is high in omega-3 fatty acid, which also decreases cholesterol.

Oils to use in place of coconut oil Olive oil, vegetable oil, safflower oil, corn oil and canola oil are all heart-healthy choices, says Steinbaum. Canola oil is actually the lowest in saturated fat (7 percent).

What else should you do for your heart health? Make sure you’re not replacing your unhealthy fats with other junk. “Never substitute fats for sugars, she warns. When it comes to carbs, stick to multigrains — which also work to lower LDL — as opposed to starches. Think: wheat, quinoa, instead of white bread, pasta. If you drink, keep it moderate, which

means, one 4-to-6 ounce glass of wine a day for women, two a day for men, Steinbaum says, which can be somewhat beneficial to the heart by reducing blood pressure and preventing blood clotting. But “if you don’t drink, don’t start, she says. “Drinking too much can have toxic effects on the heart. Exercisewise, Steinbaum says the American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of “moderate

intensity exercise a week (30 minutes, five days a week). That’s defined as anything that gets your heart rate up 50 to 75 percent of your maximum heart rate (varies based on age and individual), such as brisk walking. If you’re doing high-intensity workouts that get your heart rate up to 85 percent — cardio, like running and swimming — the recommendation is 75 minutes a week (about three days a week at 20-30 minutes a day).

BIG3 makes big debut in Brooklyn This is nothing like the NBA you watch at home. JOE PANTORNO @joepantorno

joseph.pantorno@metro.us

The NBA season has been finished for over a week now, but the Barclays Center was still stuffed to the brim with basketball fans there to see a different kind of basketball being played. Ice Cube’s BIG3 debuted in Brooklyn on Sunday for over 15,000 fans and to millions more on television on Monday night. The 3-on-3 league consists of eight teams filled with NBA alumni, highlighted by Allen Iverson, playing a halfcourt version of the game that made them famous. It was obvious though that Iverson can’t keep up with the better-con-

ditioned players of the BIG3, admitting he’s not really here to play. “I signed up to be a coach, player and captain. The coach part is going to go on throughout the game. The player part is not going to be what you expected. I’m 42 years old, he said. “The only reason why I can get out there for the couple minutes is for the fans. You’re not going to see the Allen Iverson of old out there. Surprisingly, the 76ers legend was not needed on the court to rile up the crowd in Brooklyn. The BIG3 exuded a physical brand of basketball that has not been seen on a major stage in what feels like a few decades. With plenty of contact and tenacity, officials put their whistles away, much to the surprise of the players and coaches.

“There was a lot of physical play out there and we just have to learn how to protect ourselves, said 3 Headed Monsters coach and NBA Hall of Famer Gary Payton. “It was like a prizefight. If you keep getting hit after 12 rounds, you’re going to get tired. It provided some painful moments as the afternoon’s third game featuring the Ball Hogs and Iverson’s 3’s Company saw the fans turn on the combatants, booing them mercilessly after they combined to miss nine shots in a row. “You have to understand, these kids aren’t 19 or 20, Payton said. “They’re in their 30s and some of them are in their 40s. You have to pace yourself and your body doesn’t recover like it did when you were 19. But it still made for entertaining and com-

petitive games. “The guys really enjoyed themselves, they played hard and it got pretty physical, which was good to see, said NBA Hall of Famer George Gervin, who

is coaching the Ghost Ballers. “It reminded me of back in my day when they could put their hands on you. I really enjoyed it. That’s the kind of basketball we haven’t seen

from the NBA in years, which is now highlighted by too many fouls, iso-ball and flops. And that’s why the fans at Barclays Center so quickly accepted the BIG3 on Sunday night.

Jackson: Knicks fans will have to practice patience New York fans have reasons to be optimistic after Frank Ntilikina was drafted. TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us

The value of the euro is very high in the eyes of Phil Jackson, as he’s beginning to stack his roster in his own vision. Whether it’s a Porzingis or a Hernangomez, a Kuzminskas or now a Ntilikina, Jackson is forming his own version of the United Nations at Madison Square Garden. Frank Ntilikina is the latest European player to join the Knicks following Thursday night’s draft. The 18-year-old Frenchman was selected eighth by New York, which essentially kick-starts the Knicks’ youth movement. As the threat of dealing Kristaps Porzingis dissipates, it looks like Jackson is trying to build from the ground up, relying on grooming and molding the youth in his own image. The Knicks selected two European players among his three picks, noting how coachable and versatile those types of players are compared to American born-and-raised players. “Sometimes it’s the ability for players to grow up in a system of play that they adapt to … and fitting into that style. A lot of the times in our college ball here, without making a lot of claims, a lot of it is about our college ball adapting to who the players are and our college game becomes more a style of what you can do offensively,” Jackson said, noting a big reason why Ntilikina is a Knick if because of his versatility and ability to take directions. “[American players are] just given a lot of room to play whatever one-on-one or whatever ability they have, whereas the European players are schooled into a system and how to fit into it.” The Europeans have the ability, mind-set and versatility to do just what Jackson expects of them. And for the legendary

While Frank Ntilikina can become a valuable member to the Knicks’ backcourt, it’s important to remember that he still has some developing to do. GETTY IIMAGES

ex-coach but struggling executive, this could be his best chance to finally shape a roster and succeed his way. He just asks for patience. “The reality is we have to grow a team together,” Jackson said. “I think we have to start growing our own kids.” Assuming he never receives an overwhelming no-brainer trade offer for Porzingis, Jackson will produce three European players who could be part of their core for the future. Porzingis is 21, Willy Hernangomez is 23 and Ntilikina 18. Mindaugas Kuzminskas is 27. This movement means that Jackson and the Knicks are not so subtly trying to phase out franchise cornerstone Carmelo Anthony. The maligned forward is 33 and will be entering his 14th NBA season. Whether it’s with the Knicks, who have publicly been trying to get the All-Star to remove his no-trade clause, or with another team remains to be seen. But in Jackson’s mind, he’s clearly over the Anthony era. The Knicks are 80-166 under Jackson’s watch and have missed the play-

offs four-straight times. By not moving Porzingis and selecting an 18-year-old with his top pick, it’s clear Jackson wants to rebuild with his kind of players. Jackson’s past two drafts have shown his vision for this team, as four of the last six players he’s acquired were foreignborn, including Kuzminskas. All the foreign-born players fit Jackson’s mold, most recently Ntilikina, who is 6-foot-5 and versa-

7

INTERNATIONAL MEMBERS OF THE KNICKS tile enough to play both guard positions in the triangle offense. Ntilikina also has an affinity to play defense and put his impressive (and growing) 7-foot wingspan to good use. “What I will bring to the Knicks actually is a lot of hope. I’m a player who will trust the process, work hard and definitely try to be the best player I can be,” said Ntilikina. “I’m a team point guard and shooting guard. I’ll just try to make my teammates be

better every day.” He added that he’s looking forward to working with Porzingis especially, as the Knicks begin. “We’re both European [and] we both have a good IQ,” said Ntilikina. “And playing pick-and-roll with him will be great. I just know that I will play great with him.” The pick-and-roll or pick-and-pop with Porzingis could eventually prove to be a problem for the league, but for now, Jackson doesn’t want to add any undue pressure on the rookie and won’t force the lead guard role on him just yet. Jackson is fine with letting him, and the budding team, grow … slowly. “He does some really nice things. He reads his teammates well, follows directions — he’s very good at that. He’s a good role player. I think he’s a good fit for us,” Jackson said, adding patience will be of virtue for all. “It takes time to rebuild with youth.” The 71-year-old Jackson has all the time in the world, as he’s not going anywhere — much to the chagrin of most Knicks fans. So, it’s up to the tortured, yet ardent, fan base to allow such time for a total reconstruction.
