BUSH OFFICIAL BLASTS TRUMP OVER RUSSIA

1

A former U.S. diplomat who served under Republican President George W. Bush criticized the Trump administration for failing to do more to investigate allegations that Russia sought to meddle in the 2016 U.S. election. “Russia’s going to do this again,” Nicholas Burns, who was undersecretary of state from 2005 to 2008, testified to the Senate Intelligence Committee. “Russia’s our most dangerous

adversary in the world today, and if he continues to refuse to act, it’s a dereliction of the basic duty to defend the country,” Burns said. Burns, now a professor at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, was one of four witnesses at an intelligence committee hearing about Russian efforts to influence elections in Europe.

US UNVEILS ENHANCED BLUE APRON SLASHES IPO AIRLINE SECURITY PLAN PRICE AS AMAZON LOOMS

2

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly on Wednesday unveiled enhanced security measures for foreign flights arriving in the United States in what officials said was a move to prevent an expansion in-cabin ban on laptops and other large electronic devices. “Inaction is not an option,” Kelly said, saying he believes airlines will comply with the new screening. But he

said the measures are not the last step to tighten security. U.S. officials are requiring enhanced screening of personal electronic devices, passengers and explosive detection for the roughly 2,000 commercial flights arriving daily in the United States from 280 airports in 105 countries. The decision not to impose new restrictions on laptops is a boost to U.S. airlines.

3

Blue Apron Holdings Inc. sharply lowered the expected price range for its initial public offering, as Amazon.com’s $13.7 billion deal to buy Whole Foods Market Inc. weighed on prospects for the meal-kit industry. The company lowered the IPO price range to $10 to $11 per share from its previous estimate of $15 to $17 per share after potential investors expressed concerns about Amazon’s Whole

Foods deal as well as Blue Apron’s marketing costs and lack of profitability, people familiar with the matter said. Amazon already has a small meal-kit business, delivering ingredients and recipes to customers in a handful of U.S. cities, and the Whole Foods deal announced in mid-June would hand the e-commerce company a ready-made distribution system for food delivery in the form of brick-and-mortar grocery stores.

WARNING MAY HAVE AVERTED SYRIAN ATTACK

5

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Wednesday that the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad appeared so far to have heeded a warning this week from Washington not to carry out a chemical weapons attack. Russia, the Syrian government’s main backer in the country’s civil war, warned that it would respond with dignity and proportionately if the United States took pre-emptive measures against

Syrian forces to stop what the White House says could be a planned chemical attack. The White House said on Monday it appeared the Syrian military was preparing to conduct a chemical weapons attack and said that Assad and his forces would “pay a heavy price” if it did so. The warning was based on intelligence that indicated preparations for such a strike were under way at Syria’s Shayrat airfield, U.S. officials said.

Avoid these travel times in Boston if you’re driving over the July 4 weekend This is expected to be the most traveled Independence Day weekend ever, according to AAA.

Approximately 1,155,000 Massachusetts residents are expected to travel over the holiday weekend. DEREK KOUYOUMJIAN

KRISTIN TOUSSAINT

It’s almost the holiday weekend, which means you probably have almost everything planned, like where you’ll watch the fireworks and what bathing suit you’ll don at the beach. But what about your travel plans? Be warned: This year’s Independence Day is anticipated to have record-breaking travel times, according to AAA. AAA estimates that 44.2 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles from their home during the Fourth of July weekend — that’s 1.25 million more travelers than last year, making this year the most traveled Independence Day weekend ever. Massachusetts will also see a notable first, with more than one million Bay Staters expected to travel by car, according to AAA. With about 1,155,000 Massachusetts residents expected to travel overall, that means a majority will be traveling via car, rather than transportation like the Cape Flyer. “Strong employment, combined with rising incomes and higher consumer confidence bode well for the travel industry,â€? explained Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast director of public and legislative affairs, in a statement. “This historic number of travelers will add to an already bustling summer travel season.â€? The good news is that gas prices in Massa-

chusetts are at the lowest point for this date since 2005, according to AAA Northeast. Gas in the commonwealth dropped 1 cent this week, and the average price in the state for regular unleaded is $2.20 per gallon — 6 cents below the national average.  Traffic jams in the Boston area will be up 55 percent on Saturday, July 1, but then decline 53 percent on Sunday, July 2, and 77 percent on Monday, July 3, according to the company. From 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on July Fourth, traffic will be three times higher than on a regular weekday. If you want to avoid the highways altogether, the MBTA is reminding travelers that there will be increased service on the T to handle holiday riders. Beginning at 2 p.m. on July Fourth, the lines will operate at rush-hour levels to bring riders to holiday events, and after 9:30 p.m., fares will not be collected on the subway, bus, commuter rail, ferry and the RIDE.

Times when the roads are anticipated to be most crowded Thursday, June 29, 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, June 30, 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 1, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, July 2, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, July 3, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 4, 3 to 5 p.m.

Man arrested for damaging Boston’s Holocaust Memorial After one of the memorial’s glass panels was shattered, city officials and Jewish community leaders gathered Wednesday morning. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT

City officials and those from the Jewish community came together Wednesday morning after the New England Holocaust Memorial in downtown Boston was damaged. “It was six in the morning that my wife came into our bedroom, she was shaking and crying. ‌ She said, ‘They destroyed the memorial,’â€? said Israel Arbeiter, a Holocaust survivor who spoke at a news conference Wednesday morning. The memorial features six glass towers, etched with the numbers tattooed on the arms of Jewish people who endured and were murdered in Nazi death camps. Boston police arrested a Roxbury man in connection with the incident. James E. Isaac, 21, was arrested around 1:50 a.m. after a witness allegedly saw him damage the memorial by throwing a rock that shattered one of the glass panels. Arbeiter’s number, which he rolled up his shirt sleeve to show on his forearm, was on that shattered panel, he said. Isaac was arraigned Wednesday on charges of malicious destruction of property and willful damage to a church, synagogue or memorial in Boston Municipal Court. He was held on $750 cash bail for those charges, but he had his bail revoked in an unrelated assault and battery case that is currently pending in Chelsea District Court. Isaac reportedly became involved in a verbal fight with a group of people on Union Street before 2 a.m. on Wednesday, officials said, because they did not tell Isaac the time when he asked. A witness then saw Isaac pick up an object and throw it at the memorial, shattering a glass panel. That witness contacted Boston police, who a short time later stopped Isaac after Isaac allegedly

followed the group of people he previously had a confrontation with. Isaac was also wearing a GPS device at the time as part of his release for the Chelsea case, officials said. â€œAs a city, we stand with the Jewish community. We stand side by side, shoulder to shoulder, to say we support you,â€? Mayor Marty Walsh said at the gathering. The six towers of the memorial represent the six million Jews who died during the Holocaust, the six years during which the Final Solution took place and the six main death camps where the majority of European Jews were murdered, an official said. There are 132 panes of glass, including the one that was shattered Wednesday morning, on the memorial. The memorial is maintained by Combined Jewish Philanthropies in partnership with the Boston Jewish Community Relations Council. There is 24-hour video

surveillance of the memorial, and the council is sharing last night’s footage with the Boston Police Department. “When we hear the sound of broken glass, we shudder. It’s a terrible reminder of terrible times, said Barry Shrage, president of Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston. “We were completely alone at that time, no one was there. Now here, we have the mayor, governor, the police department — God bless you all. There are duplicate panels in storage, Arbeiter said, made in anticipation of something happening to the memorial, so the site will be restored quickly. “We will rebuild, Shrage said. “We’re not going anywhere. Resilience is what makes us Jewish people, the city of Boston and the American people truly great. Isaac is due back in Boston Municipal Court on July 18.

Michael McCarthy sentenced to life in prison for murder of Bella Bond McCarthy will be eligible for parole after 20 years, a longer wait than the state minimum. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT

Michael McCarthy, the man convicted this week of killing twoyear-old Bella Bond, has been sentenced to life in prison with eligibility for parole after 20 years. McCarthy was sentenced Wednesday morning, following his conviction on Monday of second-degree murder for the death of Bella Bond. Bella was previously known for months only as “Baby Doe” after her remains washed ashore on a Boston Harbor Island in J u n e 2015. McC a r thy’s e x g i r l friend and Bella’s mother, Rachelle Bond, testified against McCarthy during the trial as part of a plea deal. McCarthy’s lawyer, Jonathan Shapiro, called Bond an “ u n r e l i a b l e witness.” Bond has a history of heroin addiction and made contradicting statements, telling the police during the investigation that she saw McCarthy dump Bella’s body in the Boston Harbor. During the trial, Bond admitted that she did not see that directly. McCarthy’s lawyer, Jonathan Shapiro, argued during the trial that it was Bond who killed Bella and then blamed McCarthy for the murder.

After the verdict was announced at McCarthy’s trial, Shapiro said that the conviction was a “travesty of justice,” according to the Boston Globe, for sending “an innocent man to prison.” During the sentencing hearing Wednesday morning, Shapiro said, “We’re left not knowing that happened [to Bella] because what Bond said was a lie.” Shapiro added that McCarthy had a “hard life, that was clear in all the testimony.” M c Carthy Bella Bond h a d FACEBOOK a history of heroin addiction as well. Bond testified during the trial that she saw McCarthy punch Bella in the stomach. He also called the toddler a demon, she said, and that “it was her time to die.” Second-degree murder comes with a mandatory life sentence. Shapiro asked the judge that McCarthy be granted parole eligibility after 15 years, which is the state minimum. The prosecution asked the judge that he not be up for parole until after 25 years. The judge landed in the middle, sentencing McCarthy to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 20 years.

School bullies are quoting President Trump to harass their classmates It creates a tricky situation for schools: How do you contend that the American president isn’t worthy of emulation? MICHAEL MARTIN

It comes with the territory: The most powerful man in the country is exalted as the ultimate role model for the nation’s youth. Then came Donald Trump, and his daily cavalcade of racist remarks are serving as a kind of unfolding Fisher-Price My First Bullying Kit for kids. Teachers nationwide are dismayed, unsure of how to discipline bullies who are using the president’s own words. There have been at least 50 incidents, across 26 states, in which elementary-school kids have used the president’s own words against classmates to harass them, BuzzFeed News reported. “This is my 21st year in education, and I’ve never seen a situation like this before,â€? said Brent Emmons, principal of Hood River Middle School in Oregon. “It’s a delicate tightrope to walk. It’s not my role to tell people how to think about

political policies, but it is my role to make sure every kid feels safe at the school. Some of the reported incidents: — On a school bus in San Antonio, Texas, a white eighth-grader said to a Filipino classmate, “You are going to be deported. — In the hallway of a high school in San Mateo County, California, a white student told two biracial girls to “go back home to whatever country you’re from. — In a classroom in Brea, California, a white eighth-grader told a black classmate, “Now that Trump won, you’re going to have to go back to Africa, where you belong. — In Louisville, Kentucky, a third-grade boy chased a Latina girl around the classroom shouting, “Build the wall! — In a stadium parking lot in Jacksonville, Florida, after a high school

football game, white students chanted at black students from the opposing school: “Donald Trump! Donald Trump! Donald Trump! — In York County, Pennsylvania, a group of high school students holding Trump signs marched through the halls; one shouted, “White power. — In Coppell, Texas, a Latino high school student found on his desk a goodbye card with a note suggesting he would be deported and ending, “Make America Great Again! With US healthcare bill in disarray, Republicans demand revamp In a big setback to the seven-year Republican quest to undo Democratic former President Barack Obama’s signature legislative achievement, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell abandoned plans to get the bill passed this week. REUTERS

Senate Republican leaders faced calls from critics within the party on Wednesday for substantial changes, rather than mere tinkering, to a major healthcare bill if they are to salvage their effort to repeal major parts of the Obamacare law. McConnell, with his reputation as a master strategist on the line, put off a vote until after next week’s Independence Day recess, after it became apparent he would not muster the 50 votes needed for passage. Acknowledging demands from fellow Republicans for more input into retooling the legislation, McConnell said on the Senate floor, “Senators will have more opportunities to offer their thoughts as we work toward an agreement.” McConnell met with a procession of Republican senators in his office, including some who have criticized the bill. John Cornyn, the No. 2 Senate Republican, said the party leadership would be talking to every Republican senator who had ex-

President Donald Trump GETTY IMAGES

pressed concerns or was undecided about the bill. Cornyn told reporters it would be “optimal” to have changes to the legislation worked out by Friday so that a new version could be analyzed by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. The CBO forecast on Monday that the existing bill would lead to some 22 million people losing their healthcare insurance over a decade while cutting the federal deficit by $321 billion over that period. The prospect of so many people losing insurance is unpalatable to moderates such as Sen.

Susan Collins, a key opponent of the draft legislation. Collins said it would be “very difficult” to reach agreement on the bill by Friday. With Democrats unified against it and Republicans controlling the Senate by a slim 52-48 margin, McConnell can afford to lose only two Republican senators to secure passage, with Vice President Mike Pence able to cast a tie-breaking vote. At least nine Republican senators — including moderates, hard-line conservatives and others — have expressed opposition to the bill in its current form.

Venezuela hunts rogue helicopter attackers, Maduro foes suspicious The Venezuelan government hunted on Wednesday for rogue policemen who attacked key installations by helicopter, but critics of President Nicolas Maduro suspected the raid may have been staged to justify repression. REUTERS

In extraordinary scenes over Caracas around sunset on Tuesday, a stolen helicopter fired shots at the Interior Ministry and dropped grenades on the Supreme Court, both viewed by Venezuela’s opposition as bastions of support for a dictator. Nobody was injured and the aircraft, identified by the government as an Airbus Bolkow 105, apparently referring to the Messerschmitt-BolkowBlohm Bo 105, was gone. Officials said special forces were seeking Oscar Perez, 36, a police pilot named as the master-

mind of the raid by the helicopter that carried a banner saying “Freedom! In 2015, Perez coproduced and starred in “Death Suspended, an action film based on real events in which he played the lead role as a government agent rescuing a kidnapped businessman. There was no sign on Wednesday of Perez, described by officials as a “psychopath, though police sources said the helicopter was dumped in Higuerote, on the Caribbean coast. The attack exacerbated an already full-blown

At least 76 people have died in the unrest since April, the latest a 25-year-old man shot in the head near a protest in the Petare slum of Caracas, authorities said on Wednesday. Hundreds more people have been injured and arrested in what Maduro terms an ongoing coup attempt with U.S. encouragement. “It’s a terrorist attack that is part of an insurrectional offensive by Venezuelan right-wing extremists with the support of foreign governments and powers, said a Venezuelan government communique on the helicopter raid. It’s a terrorist attack that is part of an insurrectional offensive by Venezuelan right-wing extremists with the support of foreign governments and powers Venezuelan government communique

may have been a government setup and overshadowed other drama on Tuesday, including the besieging of opposition legislators by gangs in the National Assembly. The helicopter raid also coincided with a judicial measure weakening the powers of dissident chief state prosecutor Luisa Ortega, who has emerged as a major challenger to Maduro. “It seems like a movie, said Julio Borges,

leader of the oppositioncontrolled legislature, of the helicopter raid. “Some people say it is a setup, some that it is real ‌ Yesterday was full of contradictions ‌ A thousand things are happening, but I summarize it like this: A government is decaying and rotting, while a nation is fighting for dignity.â€? Though Perez posted a video on social media showing himself in front of four hooded

armed men and claiming to represent a coalition of security and civilian officials rising up against “tyranny, there was no evidence of deeper support. The government, however, accused the policemen of links to the CIA and to Miguel Rodriguez, a former interior minister and intelligence chief under Maduro and his predecessor Hugo Chavez, who recently broke with the government.

Ways to celebrate the Fourth of July in Boston

It’s pretty hard to find a better place to celebrate Independence Day than Boston, the Cradle of Liberty. We’ve got you covered for the best ways to enjoy the long weekend and celebrate our country’s history with details on all the major historical, musical and culinary events happening around the city.

1

Take part in Boston Harborfest On June 30, Mayor Marty Walsh will lead an opening ceremony at Fanueil Hall and cut the official Harborfest cake as the 215th Army band plays. The celebrations continue with Arts at Harborfest, an all day art show on July 1 at Christopher Columbus Park. The park is also the spot of Sunday’s Chowderfest, where the Atlantic Fish Co., Chart House, the Hard Rock Café Boston, Joe’s American Bar & Grill and The Palm Boston will be offering samples of their chowder, all free.

2 Board the USS Constitution It’s hard to think of a better way to celebrate the

history of America than to explore the world’s oldest commissioned warship. Fourth of July weekend is also one of the last times you will be able to board the ship for a while: The USS Constitution will be closed to the public until late in the summer as she makes the transition from Dry Dock to floating again in Pier 1.

3 Fill up at City Tap House’s BeerBQ Battle

Head to Fort Point for City Tap House’s first annual BeerBQ Battle, which pits the restaurant against Lord Hobo Brewing, Otter Creek Brewing and Boulevard Brewing Co. for the title of best barbecue and beer combination. In between bites, you can stoke your own friendly rivalries with an elimination cornhole tournament, or just enjoy music from a live band.

noon-4 p.m., July 1-2. Learn about colonial life in interactive presentations on chocolatemaking, 18th-century sewing, musket use and quill writing, just to name a few. Stick around for a reading of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s famous poem “Paul Revere’s Ride” on Sunday.

5townParade through downwith Mayor Walsh The fun begins with an opening ceremony at City Hall plaza at 9 a.m. From there, a parade will march to Old

Granary Burial Ground to lay wreaths at the graves of patriots Samuel Adams, John Hancock, Robert Treat Paine and Peter Fanueil. The parade continues to the Old State House for a spirited reading of the Declaration of the Independence and concludes at Fanueil Hall.

6 One if by land, and two if by sea

Several of the city’s boat tours are offering Fourth of July specials. Boston Harbor Cruises has the Salute to Freedom Cruise, with USS Constitution

Museum Historians teaching Boston maritime history accompanied by a lobster-roll lunch. You can also party on the water with Spirit Cruises’ lunch and dinner rides, which include buffet-style fare, a DJ, dancing and games such as giant Jenga.

7favorite Chow down at your restaurants

Vegan favorite by CHLOE. will offer a Picnic Plate between July 1 and July 4, which features a Whiskey BBQ sandwich with Portobello mushrooms, corn salsa, watermelon, a choice of ice tea or lemonade. Those seeking to satisfy their sweet tooth can head over to Morano Gelato in Chestnut Hill, which is introducing flavors like pop rocks, available only during the holiday weekend. Top of the Hub will have a $250, five-course dinner with a cash bar, while also providing a great view the fireworks.

8 Walk back in time on the Freedom Trail Tourists and Bostonians alike can take the tradi-

tional Walk into History tours, which leave every hour from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. as well as at 2:30 p.m. from Faneuil Hall and Boston Common. If you’re wishing to lighten this heavy historical load, check out the Historic Pub Crawl June 29, which stops at four local taverns.

9

Rock the night away with the Boston Pops The Pops return to the DCR Hatch Shell for the free, annual Fourth of July concert. Pop singer Andy Grammar, music icon Melissa Etheridge and “Hamilton” star Leslie Odom Jr. will perform, but make sure to get there early, as the event attracts more than 500,000 people each year. Doors open at 9 a.m.

10 Watch the fireworks While the fireworks will officially launch from the Esplanade at the Pops concert, there are plenty of places to view the signature event. Try the Cambridge side of the Charles River, which features concessions for sale, sound towers broadcasting the concert’s music and prime views.

After bringing down the house at Symphony Hall in June, Leslie Odom Jr. will once again team up with the Boston Pops for this year’s Fourth of July show. “It’s one of those things that can really bring a tear to your eye as a performer, the former “Hamilton actor says of his last appearance with the orchestra. Between performing, shooting a blockbuster movie and welcoming a new baby girl to the world, the 35-year-old Tony Award winner has a lot on his plate at the moment. Was it intimidating to work with such a star-studded cast for “Murder on the Orient Express? I fought for this the same way that I fought for the “Hamilton opportunity. I just knew that it was going to be such a fantastic learning experience. There’s no better environment to be in. To learn from somebody like Kenneth Branagh, who came from the theater and rose to prominence in film and television, and is now behind the camera. I wanted to learn from these people, so I was not freaked out. Who did you bond with

the most on set? It’s sort of a cheat answer because Josh Gad, we’ve known each other since we were 18 years old. We went to college together. We’ve never worked together since we graduated. Obviously we stayed in touch and our bond could never be broken, but we hadn’t spent that much time together since college. Whenever we could get a couple days off, we’d head somewhere in Europe. I would laugh until I cried. Josh was the one I hung out with the most. Nobody on this planet makes me laugh like Josh Gad. We were in Dublin and planned to party the night away, but around 12:30-1 a.m., I had to go to my room, take an Advil and go to bed because I had a splitting headache from laughing at Josh.

At Southie’s Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar, chef Matt Drummond transforms traditional tacos — filling tortillas with everything from grilled avocado to General Tso’s chicken — while staying true to the region’s most famous fare: seafood. The essential Los Angeles No trip to the City of Angels would be complete without these must-do sites and activities.

TCL Chinese Theatre and Hollywood Walk of Fame Grauman’s Chinese Theatre opened in 1927, and stars have been imprinting their hands or feet into the cement after an “accidental” footprint by Norma Talmadge. More than 160 stars have contributed, and among the more unique prints are the nose of Jimmy Durante and hooves of Trigger. Then, of course, there’s the Walk of Fame that runs a mile along Hollywood Boulevard, with the names of more than 1,600 stars. Getty Center The Richard Meierdesigned complex has a skin of travertine marble, and natural light floods galleries filled with impressionist canvases, Greek antiquities, and jaw-dropping exhibits of furniture and decorative arts from French monarchy. Pedestrian plazas and gardens abound, and a sunset dinner at the restaurant, with its panoramic views, is the stuff of memories. Rodeo Drive Dominated by the exclusive names of Gucci, Versace and Cartier, Rodeo Drive is a shoppers’ paradise. Fortunately, Rodeo Drive doesn’t cater exclusively to the rich and famous, and more moderate shops and restaurants are interspersed with the iconic boutiques. Santa Monica Pier Spend a sunny day beside the Pacific Ocean riding the Ferris wheel and playing dozens of games for prizes at this popular family destination. Cotton candy and other hard-to-resist treats are within easy reach. Drop by in the late afternoon to experience the dazzling sunsets. Los Angeles County Museum of Art Without a doubt, this is the focal point of the museum district that runs along Wilshire Boulevard. Inside you’ll find one of the country’s most comprehensive art collections with more than 120,000 objects dating from ancient times to the present. is constantly threatened by the rapid gentrification of Venice. Still, the magicians, fortune-tellers and Muscle Beach weight lifters survive. Struggling artists sell their paintings, infiltrated by tackier purveyors of cheap watches and sunglasses. Rent a bicycle or in-line skates, grab a hot dog, and enjoy the sights and the sunset. In-N-Out Burger Angelenos have a serious passion for their local burger chain, In-N-Out. No need to get out of their beloved cars to make this magical moment happen — just drive up to the In-N-Out window, order from the secret menu (available online), and enjoy your “Animal Style” in the car. Farmers Market At Third and Fairfax, the Farmers Market is pretty much Los Angeles’ version of a community center. Everyone comes here to eat, drink and, most importantly, peoplewatch. Founded by a collective of farmers in 1934, the Farmers Market now houses more than 85 shops and restaurants — you can find everything from a Brazilian grill to a French creperie to a Lebanese kebab stand — in an open-air bazaar ringed by stalls and stands. The Farmers Market and the adjacent shopping area, The Grove, are also low-key places to spot

celebrities going about their everyday business. Taco trucks It seems that everyone in Los Angeles has a taco truck that they swear by. Typically, these taco stands on wheels have a regular corner and semiregular hours. The only reliable way to find a good one is to ask a local — or do some research on a foodie website. Hollywood Bowl No doubt you’ve seen the iconic dome in movies, but nothing compares to spending a summer evening in a bleacher seat (or, better yet, one of the coveted boxes) at the Hollywood Bowl. To really get your local on, pack a picnic complete with bottle of wine and wicker basket and don’t be afraid to share goodies with your neighbors. Griffith Park The park, extremely accessible from the city, offers a 53-mile network of trails, roads and bridle paths. One of the most popular routes is up Mount Hollywood, which boasts panoramic views of the Los Angeles basin, the Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood Sign along the way. The Broad The talk of the Los Angeles art world when it opened in fall 2015, this museum in an intrigu-

ing, honeycomb-looking building was created by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad (rhymes with “road”) to showcase

Sunset Boulevard One of the most fabled avenues in the world, Sunset Boulevard began humbly enough in the 18th century as a route from El Pueblo de Los Angeles to the Pacific Ocean. Today, as it passes through West Hollywood, it becomes the sexy and

seductive Sunset Strip, where rock and roll had its heyday and cocktail bars charge a premium for the views. Runyon Canyon Revel in terrific views of the city and Hollywood Sign from Runyon Canyon. Located just off Hollywood Boulevard, the trails here are popular and easily accessible, which means it can get crowded at times. That being said, you should be fine if you visit in the early morning. Paramount Pictures This is the only major studio from film’s golden age left in Hollywood — all the others are in Burbank, Universal City or Culver City. For decades, director Cecil B. DeMille’s base of operations, Paramount offers probably the most authentic studio tour, giving you a real sense of the film industry’s history.

I want Griffin, not Hayward OPINION

DANNY PICARD

@dannypicard

It seems inevitable. Gordon Hayward is destined to be a Boston Celtic. I say that just days before NBA free agency begins, as all the experts continue to link the C’s to Hayward once he officially opts out of his contract with the Utah Jazz, which he is expected to do. Hayward, 27, played for Brad Stevens at Butler, and he’s coming off the best offensive year of his career. Given the Celtics’ need for another scorer, it would certainly seem like a good fit for both the player and the team. But that would be my Plan B. Plan A should be Blake Griffin. According to reports, Hayward is linked to

a potential trade for Indiana’s Paul George. It seems the Celtics are trying to do both. Signing the free agent first, then working out the trade — and possible contract extension for George —

after, would make the most sense. And let me make something clear. I wouldn’t trade for George unless he signs an extension. That said, I understand why he’d

be the second shoe to drop after a big-money free-agent signing. But why does that free-agent have to be Hayward? Why can’t it be Griffin instead? Hayward is a really good player. He made his first All-Star team last season and averaged a career-high 21.9 points per game. But is he at the level where George sees Hayward’s presence in Boston as a deal breaker to signing an extension with the Celtics? I just don’t see how that could be true. Meanwhile, Griffin is 28, just one year older

than Hayward. He’s a five-time All-Star who’s averaged at least 20 points per game in six of his seven NBA seasons. As a No. 1 overall pick in 2009, Griffin is a 6-foot-10 power forward who would immediately become the Celtics’ best rebounder, averaging 9.4 rebounds per game in his career. The knock on him lately has been his health. Griffin has missed serious time due to injury the last three seasons, so dishing out the big bucks to a player who can’t stay healthy is certainly a risk. But I’m not in the business of projecting future injuries. If I was, then I’d also be questioning a trade for George, who, not too long ago suffered one of the nastiest leg injuries I’ve ever seen. But that doesn’t scare me away. And neither does Griffin’s injury history. I do, however, fear that president of basketball operations Danny Ainge is getting caught up in emotions. He’s a big fan of Hayward. Or, at least, he’s a big fan of Stevens, who is obviously a big Hayward guy himself. I’m sure Stevens would love to coach him again. And you have to think he’s expressed that to Ainge quite a bit over the years.

Would Hayward help the Celtics? Of course he would. But is he the best free agent who’ll be testing the market? No, Griffin is. So the Celtics should sign him. Not only because he’s the best available free agent, but it also makes more sense for their starting lineup if a trade for George is looming. And if the Celtics are going to make all these topthree draft picks, then Griffin’s presence won’t get in the way of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum’s minutes. Even without a trade for George, Griffin would immediately make the Celtics a better team than they were last year. And if you ask me, the addition of both Griffin and George would make the Celtics a better team than if they added the combo of Hayward and George, both now and in the future. The rumor mill suggests that Ainge feels differently. But if I were him, I’d be making Griffin my top priority on July 1. Red Sox hit the road for Fourth of July The Red Sox are playing .500 baseball as we creep into July, but that’s good enough to be battling atop the mediocre AL East this season. The Sox will get a chance to bury the doormat of the division, the disappointing Toronto Blue Jays (36-40), this weekend in Canada. Doug Fister (0-1, 4.50 ERA) is slated to throw for the Red Sox in the series opener Friday night. His first start as a member of the Sox was a decent one on June 25 against the Angels as he worked six innings and allowed three earned runs on seven hits. The Sox wound up losing that game to the Angels, 4-2, but Fister — the former star with the Tigers,

Jackie Bradley Jr. and company will be on the road this weekend. GETTY IMAGES

who has bounced around the majors the past few years — showed promise. Boston boss Dave Dombrowski claimed him off waivers. Sox ace Chris Sale (103) will pitch on Saturday

up north, with Drew Pomeranz (7-4) slated to go on Sunday. The Sox will spend Fourth of July in Texas in a three-game set against the Rangers that begins on Monday. MATT BURKE

BOSTON ATHLETES GET NAKED Several male athletes with Boston ties got naked for ESPN The Magazine recently. Its annual “Body Issue”

shows male and female athletes damn close to fully nude in all of their tight-abbed glory, making us

normals feel like tubs of goo. Celtics star Isaiah Thomas, former Bruins star Joe Thornton, and current Patriots star Julian Edelman will be among those featured. You figured Edelman would get in on this body issue action one of these e years as he famously y ripped his jacket off ff atop a Duck Boat in the 2015 Super Bowl victory parade and seems like the type that would wear only leopardskin women’s underwear at a Halloween party. Some leaked d photos of the shoot show h Edelman eating a cheeseburger while 98 percent naked. For those inclined: Nudie magazine day is next week, July 7.

Cancer Taking a trip to someplace you’ve never been will shed light on what you should be doing in the near future. Learn what you can from this experience.

Capricorn Look at all the possibilities. Partnerships will play an important role in your life. Make decisions that will influence your life with someone you love.

Leo Promises will be broken or something will not be delivered as you expect. Get your facts straight before you agree to personal, domestic or work-related changes.
