A former U.S. diplomat who served under Republican President George W. Bush criticized the Trump administration for failing to do more to investigate allegations that Russia sought to meddle in the 2016 U.S. election. “Russia’s going to do this again,” Nicholas Burns, who was undersecretary of state from 2005 to 2008, testified to the Senate Intelligence Committee. “Russia’s our most dangerous
adversary in the world today, and if he continues to refuse to act, it’s a dereliction of the basic duty to defend the country,” Burns said. Burns, now a professor at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, was one of four witnesses at an intelligence committee hearing about Russian efforts to influence elections in Europe.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly on Wednesday unveiled enhanced security measures for foreign flights arriving in the United States in what officials said was a move to prevent an expansion in-cabin ban on laptops and other large electronic devices. “Inaction is not an option,” Kelly said, saying he believes airlines will comply with the new screening. But he
said the measures are not the last step to tighten security. U.S. officials are requiring enhanced screening of personal electronic devices, passengers and explosive detection for the roughly 2,000 commercial flights arriving daily in the United States from 280 airports in 105 countries. The decision not to impose new restrictions on laptops is a boost to U.S. airlines.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Wednesday that the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad appeared so far to have heeded a warning this week from Washington not to carry out a chemical weapons attack. Russia, the Syrian government’s main backer in the country’s civil war, warned that it would respond with dignity and proportionately if the United States took pre-emptive measures against
Syrian forces to stop what the White House says could be a planned chemical attack. The White House said on Monday it appeared the Syrian military was preparing to conduct a chemical weapons attack and said that Assad and his forces would “pay a heavy price” if it did so. The warning was based on intelligence that indicated preparations for such a strike were under way at Syria’s Shayrat airfield, U.S. officials said.

Amazon already has a small meal-kit business, delivering ingredients and recipes to customers in a handful of U.S. cities, and the Whole Foods deal announced in mid-June would hand the e-commerce company a ready-made distribution system for food delivery in the form of brick-and-mortar grocery stores.

Blue Apron Holdings Inc. sharply lowered the expected price range for its initial public offering, as Amazon.com’s $13.7 billion deal to buy Whole Foods Market Inc. weighed on prospects for the meal-kit industry. The company lowered the IPO price range to $10 to $11 per share from its previous estimate of $15 to $17 per share after potential investors expressed concerns about Amazon’s Whole

Large fire in Greenwich Village apartment building causes injuries, subway closure Onlookers watched from smokefilled streets as authorities battled the blaze. KIMBERLY M. AQUILINA @KimESTAqui kimberly.aquilina@metro.us
A fire in Greenwich Village tore through a sixstory apartment building on Wednesday evening and led to a firefighter being treated for minor injuries and a temporary subway station closure as crews battled the blaze. A spokesman for the FDNY said the blaze at 60 E. 9th St. in Manhattan started around 5:45 p.m. and drew 138 firefighters to the scene. There was heavy smoke on the roof of the building in addition to the fire. One firefighter was treated for minor injuries,
according to the FDNY, and 15 others underwent medical evaluations, along with one civilian, for possible injuries. An FDNY spokesman said the cause of the fire at the building, named The Hamilton, was not yet known. The Eighth Street-NYU subway station, which services the R and W trains, was being bypassed by train traffic in both directions as authorities worked to contain the fire, according to the MTA. A source told the Daily Mail that the fire department was called after an “explosion” was heard on the top floor. Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro praised the FDNY for holding the fire to one wing of the building and preventing more damage, NY1 reported. Smoke filled the streets of Greenwich Village due to the fire,
Pix11 reported. Pictures on social media showed onlookers watching from smoke-filled streets as firefighters battled the blaze. The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene advises closing windows and reducing outdoor activity when smoke is present. People with heart or breathing conditions such as asthma should seek immediate medical attention if they experience shortness of breath or chest pains from exposure to smoke. Fire Commissioner Nigro told NY1 that officials were investigating if the fire started in a deli on the first floor, traveled up the shaft and into the area called the cockloft, which is similar to an attic. The fire may have then spread through the space between the cockloft and the roof. Apartments in the

building ranged from $525,000 studios to twobedroom units costing $1.25 million, the Daily Mail added.
Subway trains bypassed a nearby station during the fire.

Two MTA maintenance supervisors were suspended in the wake of Tuesday’s A train derailment in Harlem, an agency official said. The two were in charge of a rail replacement near 125th Street in which unused rail was placed in the center of the subway track. While a common practice, the loose rail caused the A train to jump the track during the Tuesday morning rush hour, leaving 34 passengers injured after the train struck the tunnel wall, tore open a door and damaged the track. “The two supervisors who were responsible for the oversight of the work have been suspended without pay pending a formal review process,” MTA spokeswoman Beth DeFalco said. The unidentified workers were taken off duty early Wednesday morning, sources told the New York Daily News. “They’re fast to point the finger at employees. To blame them right away, when the investigation is not even complete … is ridiculous,” Mike Carrube, president of the Subway Surface Supervisors Association, said. Tuesday morning’s derailment of a southbound A train near 125th Street in Harlem was reportedly caused by human er-
ror, the MTA said. A piece of replacement rail was incorrectly stored on the tracks, and the storage of such parts is now being investigated systemwide, agency officials said. The derailment occurred between 125th Street and 135th Street during Tuesday’s rushhour commute and left at least 34 people injured. Straphangers were evacuated amid darkness and smoke after the train hit a tunnel wall. The incident caused mass delays and service changes across the A, B, C and D train lines for the rest of the day and into Wednesday morning’s rush hour, when A express trains ran local from Inwood-207th Street to 59th Street, and D express trains ran local from 145th Street to Columbus Circle. One trip from 145th Street to Fulton Center in the Financial District was particularly uncomfortable for commuters as a downtown A train arrived at 145th Street packed, and remained so for the entire trip, with many New Yorkers unable to fit on the train at various stops down Manhattan’s Upper West Side. According to an MTA announcement at 9:07 a.m., service on the A, B, C and D trains resumed with “extensive delays” after emergency work occurred overnight. According to The New York Times, a southbound A train derailed almost 20 years ago in the same area. That crash was also caused by human error, when a worker flipped the wrong track’s switch on July 3, 1997. A subway car broke in half after jumping the track, causing injuries to 13 passengers and two firefighters.

If you have very strong feelings about the looming demolition of the old Kosciuszko Bridge between Brooklyn and Queens — and a pet wolf — there’s a happening for you coming up. A Facebook event created by Brian Hersey is looking for “a band of dedicated warriors” to defend the now-defunct old span of the Kosciuszko Bridge from its ill fate with wolves and swords (both of which are no-nos in New York City). Hersey came up with the idea after seeing a lot of posts on social media about New Yorkers being excited for the bridge’s looming demise. “Nobody was really speaking up for the old bridge. I thought there were two sides,” he told Metro, adding that he has no particular relationship with the Kosciuszko Bridge. “Aside from the fact that I’ve been caught in traffic on it about five billion times, it has become an iconic part of the skyline. So there is that aspect of old New York going away.” Thinking he’d get a few friends to like it, as of Wednesday, Hersey’s event has 673 RSVPs and more than 1,600 interested in attending, which made him “completely gobsmacked and flabbergasted. This has led to real
actual talking to people and planning to make this a thing where there is a date and a time and people can just be lunatics and dress up and do what they want to do,” he said. “Maybe there will be a real wolf or two. How people want to come, I’m leaving it wide open. I just like the idea of people’s creativity and imagination running amok.” And for the group member who asked if ninjas will be allowed to attend, “a ninja does qualify as a sword-carrying warrior,” Hersey said. While his event is currently scheduled for July 11, that date will change once the official demolition day is announced by the powers that be. The governor’s office did not respond to a request for comment about Hersey’s offbeat event or the actual demolition, which likely will not feature any explosives as the bridge is slated to be dismantled and lowered onto a barge sometime this summer. Hersey kept mum about what he will be wearing on whatever day is the original Kosciuszko Bridge’s last. “I don’t want to excite people too much,” he said with a laugh. The original Kosciuszko Bridge opened in 1939 and closed after Phase 1 of its new, $555 million span opened at the end of April. This first portion is a Queens-bound bridge with three lanes of traffic in both directions. Phase II’s Brooklynbound bridge is slated to open in 2020, and will give four lanes of traffic to Brooklyn and five to Queens.

Venezuela hunts rogue helicopter attackers In extraordinary scenes over Caracas around sunset on Tuesday, a stolen helicopter fired shots at the Interior Ministry and dropped grenades on the Supreme Court, both viewed by Venezuela’s opposition as bastions of support for a dictator. Nobody was injured and the aircraft, identified by the government as an Airbus Bolkow
105, apparently referring to the MesserschmittBolkow-Blohm Bo 105, was gone. Officials said special forces were seeking Oscar Perez, 36, a police pilot named as the mastermind of the raid by the helicopter that carried a banner saying “Freedom!” In 2015, Perez coproduced and starred in “Death Suspended,”
2020 LAUNCHES As horrifying, exhausting and depressing as it seems, the 2020 race for president has started. I know this because Wednesday night President Trump hosted his first re-election fundraiser at his hotel here in D.C. I also know because the rivers are flowing backward, the sky grew dark at noon, and my windowsill is covered with ravens. Mind you, don’t take all of that as a commentary on President Trump. These signs and wonders are merely harbingers of the dreadful idea that another bonecrushing, soul-searing election could launch so soon after we escaped that purgatory. But back to the president. If you think it seems a tad early to be stocking up the re-election war chest, you’re right. As my CNN colleague Jeff Zeleny notes: “It’s more than two years sooner than George W. Bush or Barack Obama held their first fundraising events for their re-election efforts.” So why do it? Three reasons. 1. Approval ratings Trump’s numbers are so low the White House might have to dig a basement under the basement to hold them. Whipping his followers into a re-election frenzy is one way of creating — if not better numbers — at least better optics. 2. Legislative momentum The president is having a devil of a time passing any substantial legislation. Reminding his Republican colleagues just how long he may

be around could nudge some of them to consider his legacy — and it’s not a bad way to draw some of the attention away from his struggles. 3. A warning shot There are probably Republicans in D.C. right now plotting ways to snatch the party’s nomination from the sitting president. Such maneuvers are rare, and success is even more elusive. But, you know, desperate times and all. By starting his fundraising, the president is plainly telling any would-be challengers that he will be up for the fight. Of course, all three of those tactics could come up a bust. But at $35,000 a plate, the fundraising dinner is perfect for doing what Trump does best — grabbing headlines, making him look larger than life and once again showing D.C. he plays by his own rules.
an action film based on real events in which he played the lead role as a government agent rescuing a kidnapped businessman. There was no sign on Wednesday of Perez, described by officials as a “psychopath,” though police sources said the helicopter was dumped in Higuerote, on the Caribbean coast.
The attack exacerbated an already full-blown political crisis in Venezuela after three months of opposition protests demanding general elections and fixes for the sinking economy. At least 76 people have died in the unrest since April, the latest a 25-year-old man shot in the head near a protest in the Petare slum of

Hundreds more people have been injured and arrested in what Maduro terms an ongoing coup attempt with U.S. encouragement. “It’s a terrorist attack that is part of an insurrectional offensive by Venezuelan right-wing extremists with the support of foreign governments

and powers,” said a Venezuelan government communique on the helicopter raid. The attack fed a conspiracy theory by opposition supporters that it may have been a government setup and overshadowed other drama on Tuesday, including the besieging of opposition legislators by gangs in the National Assembly. With US healthcare bill in disarray, Republicans demand revamp In a big setback to the seven-year Republican quest to undo Democratic former President Barack Obama’s signature legislative achievement, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell abandoned plans to get the bill passed this week. Senate Republican leaders faced calls from critics within the party on Wednesday for substantial changes, rather than mere tinkering, to a major healthcare bill if they are to salvage their effort to repeal major parts of the Obamacare law. McConnell, with his reputation as a master strategist on the line, put off a vote until after next week’s Independence Day recess, after it became apparent he would

not muster the 50 votes needed for passage. Acknowledging demands from fellow Republicans for more input into retooling the legislation, McConnell said on the Senate floor, “Senators will have more opportunities to offer their thoughts as we work toward an agreement.” McConnell met with a procession of Republican senators in his office, including some who have criticized the bill. John Cornyn, the No. 2 Senate Republican, said the party leadership would be talking to every Republican senator who had expressed concerns or was undecided about the bill. Cornyn told reporters it would be “optimal” to have changes to the legislation worked out by Friday so that a new version could be analyzed by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. The CBO forecast on
President Donald Trump GETTY IMAGES
Monday that the existing bill would lead to some 22 million people losing their healthcare insurance over a decade while cutting the federal deficit by $321 billion over that period. The prospect of so many people losing insurance is unpalatable to moderates such as Sen. Susan Collins, a key opponent of the draft legislation. Collins said it would be “very difficult” to reach agreement on the bill by Friday.
With Democrats unified against it and Republicans controlling the Senate by a slim 5248 margin, McConnell can afford to lose only two Republican senators to secure passage, with Vice President Mike Pence able to cast a tiebreaking vote. At least nine Republican senators — including moderates, hard-line conservatives and others — have expressed opposition to the bill in its current form. REUTERS

Let’s talk about Rihanna’s new BF Um, has Rihanna had a boyfriend all this time, and has she been hiding him from us? Maybe! Our lady Rih Rih was spotted making out with a hot guy in a pool in Spain, as you do. Which had everyone wondering — who, exactly, is this man whose hotness comes through even the grainiest of photographs? Turns out Page Six has the answer: his name is Hassan Jameel, and he’s a Saudi businessman with a rich family and a net worth of $1.5 billion. BILLION. Rihanna really is out here being a role model for us all, showing us how to live. Bless her. “They’ve been spending a lot of time together away from prying eyes and are really serious,” a source said. “They’re really enjoying each others’ company.” You know what? I feel deep in the crevasse where a heart usually would be that Rihanna leads by example. So let’s all get billionaire businessmen boyfriends now. It’s this summer’s hottest new trend!

During a chat on an Israeli TV show, Britney clapped back at the haters that have criticized her for using prerecorded tracks. On how much of her Piece of Me shows are live, she said, “A lot of people think that I don’t sing live. I usually, because I’m dancing so much, I do have a little bit of playback, but there’s a mixture of my voice and the playback. “It really pisses me off because I’m busting my ass out there and singing at the same time,” the 35-year-old said. “Nobody ever really gives me credit for it.” OK, but you’re still also lip syncing, right? Edgar Wright keeps it real The beloved director talked to real getaway drivers before making the action movie ‘Baby Driver.â€? MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Edgar Wright is speaking from inside a car while we talk “Baby Driver. He’s not driving, of course. That wouldn’t be safe. Even if he were, he’d be nothing like the hero of his latest movie: an action film about a young getaway driver named Baby (Ansel Elgort) trying to get out of his life of crime. (And being that its from the maker of “Shaun of the Dead and “Hot Fuzz, the film is also really funny.) But Wright himself isn’t much of hot rodder.
“I like driving while listening to music, Wright tells us. “I’m more interested in the ride than the car, if that makes sense. That’s part of the reason why “Baby Driver is such an unusual car movie: The rides Baby drives usually aren’t distinct. You notice the driving, not the make of vehicle. “In most action films, the hero is driving a vintage muscle car or a fancy quarterof-a-milliondollar sports GETTY
car. I remember with the remake of ‘Gone in 60 Seconds,’ Nicolas Cage’s car is so beautiful that it seems like the filmmakers can’t bear to put a dent in it for the entire movie, he says. “One of the things I learned interviewing getaway drivers and ex-cons is that with bank heists, they use stolen cars, which are easy to blend into normal traffic. They’d steal something on the day of the heist from a parking struc-

ture, something that’s not going to be phoned in as missing. Some of the crazy stories Wright heard from ex-cons wound up in the movie. “I’d ask them, ‘Did you ever listen to music on the way to a job?’ One of them said, ‘I wouldn’t listen to anything on the way to the job because I’ve got enough demons making music in my head.’ I was like, ‘Oh, boy, write that one down,’ Wright recalls. Here’s one more thing that’s never been a part of movies before “Baby Driver: Jon Hamm as a
slimy coke-head criminal. Wright actually wrote the part for him, even though his character’s far from Don Draper or anyone else he’s played — and even though it’s a supporting role. But because the character is played by Jon Hamm, you get the sense that when he’s not onscreen he’s off in his own movie. “You get the sense of a bigger universe, Wright says. “You don’t need to do a Cinematic Universe for this movie, but it’s fun to imagine what the characters are doing when they’re not onscreen.
“Baby Driverâ€? isn’t your typical car movie in another way: Baby’s shtick is to play a song during each heist, timing his moves down to the beat. Amazingly, most of them have never appeared in a movie before. “It was about picking songs that don’t necessarily have visuals you associate with them,â€? Wright says. “A lot of the songs aren’t monotonous; they have these great, distinct sections to them. ‘Bellbottoms’ [by Jon Spencer Blues Explosion] has a big build then it really kicks o. ‘Hocus Pocus’ [by Focus] is always starting and stopping.â€? One movie newbie is “Neat Neat Neat,â€? the full-throttle opening to the debut album by punk legends the Damned. Wright remembers watching a Damned documentary last year in which the lead singer, Dave Vanian, complained about the lack of his band in movies. “He said, ‘People don’t remember the Damned, we need to get the Damned in a movie, we need a music supervisor to hear our tracks.’ He was having this embittered rant,â€? ‘She Makes Comics’ proves superheroes aren’t just for boys JENNA BUSCH Geek Girl in Hollywood Jenna Busch takes on the way pop culture snubs its female fans. For more columns, visit metro.us/jenna-busch as well as her site, Legion of Leia (legionofleia.com)
A couple of years ago, I took part in something that I’m very proud of: the documentary “She Makes Comics,” which hits VOD and iTunes on July 11. I promise you, this isn’t some shameless promotion; I’m just interviewed in the film for a few minutes. I didn’t write/produce/ direct or do anything other than chat about what this art form means to me. Here’s the info on the film: “‘She Makes Comics’ traces the fascinating history of women in the comics industry. Despite popular assumptions about the comics world, women have been writing, drawing, and reading comics since the medium’s beginnings
in the late 19th century. And today, there are scores of women involved in comics and its vibrant fan culture.” Here’s the thing about this film: Even knowing what I know about the history of comics and the women in them — even having written comics — I had no idea about the extent of women’s history in the genre. I don’t think most people, even within the industry, know how much we’ve been a part of it since the beginning. There is a reason I say this. A number of years ago, I was lucky enough to be a part of the comics anthology “Womanthology.” Everyone involved identi-

out, I was at San Diego Comic-Con. I was showing a friend the book and my stories in it. A tiny little girl came up to me and pulled on my pant leg. She said, “Are you in this book?” I told her I was. She asked, “Can I hug you?” After I was done choking back tears, her mom told me that she wanted to draw comics and that “she didn’t think girls could do that.” If you’re a comic book fan, then these women are part of the history of something you love. It’s worth learning about more than just the men who created this art.
fascinating hearing what they went through in the early years and how, at one point, there were more female readers of comics than male readers. However, the longer I do what I do, the less surprised I am. It’s not that women aren’t involved in industries. It’s more that no one talks about them. I’m really proud to be a part of this project, even in my very small way. I want to help get the word out there and let people know about this film. I’ve told this story before, but here’s a reason why: When “Womanthology” came
fies as a woman and it shocked the industry. The Kickstarter tried to raise $25,000 and ended up raising $109,301! Comics greats like Jim Lee, Steve Niles, Cat Staggs, Gail Simone and Neil Gaiman donated rewards for donations. All of a sudden, I was hearing from industry insiders that they were stunned. They had no idea how much people wanted to see this. How could they not, you ask? That’s a little of what the film takes on. It’s fascinating learning about the things women have been involved with. These Fourth of July parties will be lit — and so will the skies above you as you take in the best fireworks views. EVA KIS @thisiskis
eva.kis@metro.us
Before heading out to watch Macy’s 2017 Fourth of July fireworks display over the East River, know that the five barges this year are clustered between East 24th and 40th streets. That narrows where you can see the action, but front-row views can still be had — and not (necessarily) for a lot of Benjamins.
Zum Kaboom The East Village’s favorite German beer hall Zum Schneider sets up right on the riverside as Zum
Kaboom, an outdoor biergarten kicking off the day with live rock and blues from Strange Majik and DJ Volka Racho starting at 3 p.m. At $25 for entry, it’s a stone cold deal for a front-row seat, though unlike previous years you’ll have to shell out for the hot dogs, currywursts, corn on the cob and beers (German and American, of course). 3 p.m.-10 p.m., 24-20 FDR Drive at 23rd Street
William Vale It’s a little bit south of the action, but Williamsburg’s hippest new hotel has a sweet elevated park and urban farm that should make for decent viewing. Their first-ever casual lawn party grants you access from 7-11 p.m. as the Mister Dips crew cooks up burgers and fries alongside their usual soft-serve cones and
drinks. A patriotic $17.76 gets you in all night to this all-ages party. 111 N. 12th St., Brooklyn
Northern Territory One of our favorite rooftop bars also happens to have unobstructed East River vistas. Even though this Greenpoint bar is run by Aussies, their Americana-themed party is on point with Jell-O shots, frozen drinks and more. There are no advance tickets, so you’ll have to bring $60 cash when the doors open at 4 p.m. 12 Franklin St.
Brooklyn Barge You’ll not only have totally unobstructed views of the fireworks from Greenpoint’s seasonal floating bar Brooklyn Barge, they’ll be fired off right in front of you. Until then, dig into a lobster
boil dinner and premium open bar while a DJ spins live starting at 6 p.m. with prices determined by where you sit (picnic tables on the beach will run you $150, while a seat on the barge is $250). For the broke partiers, there’s also a budget-friendly $50 option with standing room tickets that include two drinks (beer or wine) and popcorn. 3 Milton St., Brooklyn
frozé and boozy popsicles, continuing until 2 a.m. Get in for $50 — just be sure to stake out a spot on the norther patio before the action starts. 50 Bowery
Sail to the action
The Crown At 21 floors high, Chinatown’s rooftop bar (we called it the best of the season) rises way above every building around it. It’s far south of the action, but there’s nothing on the East River shoreline nearly as tall, giving you a vantage point that should yield some spectacular results. The party starts at 5 p.m. with happy hour specials until 7 p.m. like
you will be sitting right in front of the barges as close to the water as you can be without getting wet, including an open bar from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. and a barbecue buffet. On the East River at 30th Street
The Crown BRANDON HARDIN
The Crow’s Nest If you’ve had a little Christmas in July-style windfall, perch on the East River’s classic rooftop bar Crow’s Nest. Entry is a whopping $395, but
Nothing gets you closer to the action than a harbor cruise, provided you’re also down for spending four hours on the water. Your (many, many) options range from a night of dancing on the classic Mississippi riverboat Liberty Belle ($119) to a family-friendly jaunt on the Audubon Yacht with a traditional backyard cookout buffet ($159), the lavish Cirque at Sea cruise with acrobats, musicians and an upscale dinner buffet ($279) and an ultraluxury evening aboard the Hornblower Esprit with a six-course dinner.

26 THINGS TO DO
Do the Fourth for free Can’t splurge on a party? There are plenty of spots to watch the fireworks without spending a dime. EVA KIS @thisiskis
eva.kis@metro.us
If you don’t have the scratch to watch the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks from a party with views of the action, parks are always a good (if crowded) option — but there’s a catch this year. Two of what are usually the best spots won’t have any views this year because Macy’s has lined up all of its barges between 23rd and 41st streets on the East River. That means Brooklyn Bridge Park and the South Street Seaport are out. And only Roosevelt Island residents managed to snag tickets for the free
viewing party at Four Freedoms Park. With an especially over-the-top show in store — Macy’s has upped the usual 50,000 pounds of fireworks to 60,000 — it’s worth the trek to these free public viewing spots.
Gantry State Park and Hunters Point These two parks make for a scenic sliver along the water. With all the elevated walkways and intricate landscaping, it’s more like a nature walk than open parkland, so there’s not much space to picnic. Which is why you should start your day at LIC Flea & Food just a block from the park (it’s easier than ever to get there on the East River Ferry). A special Tuesday edition of the open-air market will have food vendors and a beer garden. When it’s time for the show, watch from the promenade or one of

Coney Island You know what? Forget the hassle of trying to get to the same fireworks as everyone else and use the long weekend to cross off a major NYC bucket list item by heading to Coney Island. If you haven’t personally witnessed the modern-day feat of strength that is Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, arrive early (action starts at 10 a.m.). Once the champion is crowned, spend your day riding the rides (Luna Park’s Cyclone may be 90 but it’s never been more spry), and don’t miss the outdoor Coney Art Walls mural gallery. Be on the Boardwalk when fireworks start at 9:30 p.m.

Best public pools in NYC Cool off this summer at a chlorinated city oasis.
Astoria Park Pool

Summer is here, and it’s time to cool off any chance you can get. While beaches are essential to surviving any NYC summer, sometimes you want a closer body of water in which to submerge yourself, and that’s where city pools come in. On Thursday, June 29, all NYC free public outdoor pools open for the season. A couple FYIs before you take the first plunge: The NYC Parks Department requires that you wear an actual swimsuit to the pool. So dudes, don’t try to pass off mesh shorts for trunks, because you could be asked to show your lining. If you plan to put your top back on while you’re chilling poolside, make it a plain white tank or tee — no shirts with any colors are allowed. You’re required to bring a lock to keep your belongings safe. And don’t bring any food, glass bottles, electronic devices, or “unbound periodicals.” (Guess you’ll have to leave your Metro newspaper at home!) All NYC public outdoor pools are open daily from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. June 29 through September 10, with the exception of mini-pools, which close Labor Day. All of the below pools provide swimming lessons, and, with the exception of the Floating Pool, early-bird and night-owl lap swim. Now that you’ve got the rules down, you’re ready to dive in. Here are our favorites across all five boroughs, when it comes to location, size, cleanliness and amenities. For a complete list of city pools and to register for lap swim or swimming lessons, visit nycgovparks.org.

track before your swim, or even a session at Yoga to the People on N.11th. Post-swim, recharge with drinks and bites at any number of nearby bars and restaurants, including Jimmy’s Diner, Bar Matchless and the William Vale Hotel. 776 Lorimer St. Red Hook Pool If you need another reason to visit Red Hook, make it a stop at the neighborhood’s Olympic-size pool at the Red Hook Ball Fields. For a post-swim snack, grab a pupusa, huarache or watermelon drink from the Red Hook Food Vendors, who set up food trucks in the Ball Fields all summer long. 155 Bay St. Brooklyn Bridge Park Pop-Up Pool This mini-pool (50 feet by 30 feet, and only 3.5
feet deep, making it great for kids) makes up for its petite size with its prime location. Situated at Pier 2, you’re treated to East River views while you take a dip, and surrounded by a sandy beach and Lizzmonade concessions. Because the pool caps off at 60 people, you’re limited to first-come, first-served 45-minute sessions, guaranteed by wristband. Located just South of Houston St. on the Lower East Side, it’s accessible via the Williamsburg Bridge, if you’re inspired to reward yourself with a swim post bridge bike ride. Once you’ve cooled off, heat up again with a spicy bowl at Ivan Ramen. 128 Pitt St.

Queens Astoria Park Pool This massive, chlorineblue oasis has epic views to boot, set against the backdrop of the East River and the Robert F. Kennedy and Hell’s Gate Bridges. Quench your thirst after at the Sparrow Tavern, or indulge in a seafood feast at Taverna Kyclades. 19th St. and 23rd Dr.
Bronx The Floating Pool Possibly your only opportunity to be simultaneously in the water while on the water, this pool-
on-a-boat is pretty neato. Situated on a barge docked off Barretto Point Park in Hunt’s Point, the seven-lane pool is surrounded by water on all sides, and you even have to traverse a gangplank to get to it! Once you’re out there, you’ve got everything you need in the way of concessions, bathrooms and locker rooms. Barretto Point Park.
Staten Island Lyons Pool Take the Staten Island Ferry to the island’s largest pool, a national landmark first built by the WPA in 1936. After your swim, enjoy Spanish tapas at Beso, beers at the Flagship Brewing Company, or Sri Lankan cuisine at Lakruwana. 20 Victory Blvd.

Farmers Market At Third and Fairfax, the Farmers Market is pretty much Los Angeles’ version of a community center. Everyone comes here to eat, drink and, most importantly, peoplewatch. Founded by a collective of farmers in 1934, the Farmers Market now houses more than 85 shops and restaurants — you can find everything from a Brazilian grill to a French creperie to a Lebanese kebab stand — in an open-air bazaar ringed by stalls and stands. The Farmers Market and the adjacent shopping area, The Grove, are also low-key places to spot celebrities going about their everyday business. Taco trucks It seems that everyone in Los Angeles has a taco truck that they swear by. Typically, these taco stands on wheels have a regular corner and semi-regular hours. The only reliable way to find a good one is to ask a local — or do some research on a foodie website. and the Hollywood Sign along the way. The Broad The talk of the Los Angeles art world when it opened in fall 2015, this museum in an intriguing, honeycomb-looking building was created by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad (rhymes with “road”) to showcase their stunning private collection of contemporary art amassed over five decades and still growing. Los Angeles County Museum of Art Without a doubt, this is the focal point of the museum district that runs along Wilshire Boulevard. Inside you’ll find one of the country’s most comprehensive art collections with more than 120,000 objects dating from ancient times to the present. The museum, which opened in 1965, now includes numerous buildings that cover more than 20 acres. Sunset Boulevard One of the most fabled avenues in the world, Sunset Boulevard began humbly enough in the 18th century as a route from El Pueblo de Los Angeles to the Pacific Ocean. As it passes through West Hollywood, it becomes the sexy and seductive Sunset Strip, where rock and roll had its heyday and cocktail bars charge a premium for the views. Runyon Canyon Revel in terrific views of the city and Hollywood Sign from Runyon Canyon. Located just off Hollywood Boulevard, the trails here are popular and easily accessible, which means it can get crowded at times. That being said, you should be fine if you visit in the early morning. Paramount Pictures This is the only major studio from film’s golden age left in Hollywood — all the others are in Burbank, Universal City or Culver City. For decades, it was director Cecil B. DeMille’s base of operations. Paramount offers probably the most authentic studio tour, giving you a real sense of the film industry’s history.

Jackson out as Knicks president

The New York Knicks announced on Wednesday that they and team president Phil Jackson are parting ways after three years. “After careful thought and consideration, we mutually agreed that the Knicks will be going in a different direction, said team owner James Dolan. “Phil Jackson is one of the most celebrated and successful individuals in the history of
the NBA. His legacy in the game of basketball is unmatched. We wish him the best and thank him for his service to the Knicks as both a player and an executive.â€? Jackson also provided a statement: “The New York Knicks will always hold a special place in my heart. This team and this town launched my NBA career. I will forever be indebted to them. I am grateful to Mr. Dolan for giving me the opportunity to return here ‌ I had hoped, of course, to bring another NBA championship to the Garden. As someone who treasures winning, I am deeply disappointed that we weren’t able to do that. New York fans
The Future of Foot Surgery has arrived at NY Podiatric Medicine
deserve nothing less. I wish them and the Knicks organization all the best — today and always. However, Jackson’s legacy took an enormous hit during his tenure in New York. As team president, the Knicks went 80-166, failed to reach the postseason and he almost ran the team into the ground over the last few weeks. After future face of the franchise Kristaps Porzingis skipped out on his end-of-season exit meetings with Knicks management, Jackson began listening to trade offers for the gifted Latvian big man just days before the 2017 NBA draft. Multiple teams
came calling, including the Phoenix Suns and Boston Celtics, but none were able to meet Jackson’s ludicrous demands. He retained the team’s No. 8 pick in the draft and selected another international player, 18-year-old French point guard Frank Ntilikina, despite NC State’s Dennis Smith Jr. still being on the board. It was all a part of his vision of building the team around Porzingis and Willy Hernangomez. During the Porzingis drama beginning in April and leading up to the draft, the Knicks had already picked up the option on the final two years of Jackson’s contract as he tried to
push Carmelo Anthony into waiving his no-trade clause. Anthony was the man that looks to have caused the split as Jackson and Dolan had one last disagreement on the 12-time All-Star’s future in New York. Jackson publicly made it known that he wanted Anthony to waive his no-trade clause. When Anthony approached the team about a buyout on Tuesday, Jackson was willing to do it, Dolan was not. It wasn’t all bad for Jackson, though. He was the highest-paid executive in North American sports, making $12 million per year. During his 1,200-day reign, he made $50,000 per day.

Knicks eyeing Masai Ujiri as Jackson’s replacement The Knicks are oďŹƒcially on the hunt for a new team president and it looks as though a favorite emerged just hours after they parted ways with Phil Jackson on Wednesday. NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Knicks owner James Dolan “is targetingâ€? Toronto Raptors president and general manager Masai Ujiri, who has been at the post since 2013. It would be a considerable downgrade for the 46-year-old Ujiri, whose Raptors have made the postseason in each of the last four seasons. The Knicks haven’t made the playos since 2013. However, things could be trending downward in Toronto with star guard Kyle Lowry set to hit free agency in July. Raptors fans will be hoping that locking up DeMar DeRozan until 2021 will be enough to coax Lowry into staying with Toronto for at least a few more years. But if Ujiri is actually interested in taking the Knicks job, the most important factor of his candidacy could be his views on Carmelo Anthony. Jackson wanted the veteran star to waive his no-trade clause and then wanted the Knicks to buy out the remaining two years of his contract, but Dolan did not want to make a deal or shell out $54 million. A desire to hang on to Anthony will obviously score brownie points for Ujiri with Dolan, who helped orchestrate the 12-time AllStar’s arrival to New York from Denver in 2011.

Dolan still found a way to screw up the Knicks’ split with Jackson The Knicks owner continues to make poor calls, even in the midst of the right decision. JOE PANTORNO @JoePantorno
joseph.pantorno@metro.us
Don’t stop celebrating, Knicks fans. I’m not going to tell you that Phil Jackson’s departure from the team was a bad thing or that it was the wrong call. It absolutely was not. While we all sort of came to the conclusion fairly early on during Jackson’s three-year stint as team president that he wasn’t fit for the job, the last few weeks really confirmed that he needed to go. Guys, he was really thinking about trad-
ing Kristaps Porzingis. That’s like falling onto a big pile of money and then just trying to just give it away to strangers. Forget his public witch hunt of Carmelo Anthony, which was completely unfair to the star forward despite his occasional ventures into the dramatics with the media. His dealing with Porzingis alone should have set off every single alarm and red flag leading up to the NBA draft. Team owner James Dolan should have gotten rid of him immediately at that moment. Instead, Dolan not only let Jackson take calls from teams including the Phoenix Suns and Boston Celtics, but he let the Zen Master make New York’s selection at No. 8 overall last Thursday, picking 18-year-old French point
guard Frank Ntilikina. Jackson expressed that Ntilikina fits his vision of a team led by Porzingis and Willy Hernangomez even though the higher-rated Dennis Smith Jr. out of NC State was still on the board. Of course, he was taken with the following pick by the Dallas Mavericks, which creates the perfect narrative of ineptitude 10 years from now if he becomes a superstar and Ntilikina fails to develop into the stellar two-way guard that Jackson was expecting. While all this was happening, Dolan was playing a gig with his band … during the draft. And now, after this ridiculousness, just three days out from free agency, Dolan decided it was time to pull the plug on Jackson after he obtained the assets to fit
his specific and quirky vision to build the team his way. It looks as though Carmelo Anthony was the driving force behind Jackson’s exit. To keep it short, Jackson wanted Anthony out, we all know this. Dolan did not. So let’s just think about how silly this is. After you allowed Jackson to almost fully build his team — really the last piece was dealing Anthony — Dolan stepped up, did something he should have done weeks ago and will now get someone else to try and make the former president’s vision work. That’s ludicrous. The lack of continuity is only going to hurt the product on the floor as well unless Anthony can buy into whatever system the Knicks decide to
James Dolan couldn’t even get Phil Jackson’s firing right. GETTY IMAGES
run this fall while nurturing the youngsters toward stardom. That’s of course assuming he isn’t
bought out. But does Dolan really care about that? My guess is no.

Cancer Taking a trip to someplace you’ve never been will shed light on what you should be doing in the near future. Learn what you can from this experience.
Capricorn Look at all the possibilities. Partnerships will play an important role in your life. Make decisions that will influence your life with someone you love.
