TRUMP, PUTIN TO HOLD MEETING NEXT WEEK
TRAVEL BAN BARS MNUCHIN SAYS US GRANDPARENTS, FIANCÉS IS SUPPORTIVE OF IMF

President Donald Trump will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week at a summit in Germany that brings two world leaders whose political fortunes have become intertwined face-to-face for the first time. Both the Kremlin and the White House announced on Thursday that the pair will meet on the sidelines of the July 7-8 summit of G20 nations in Hamburg. U.S. National Security
Adviser H.R. McMaster told reporters that no agenda had yet been set for the meeting, which is fraught with difficulties for Trump. Allegations that Russia interfered in the U.S. presidential election last year and colluded with the Republican’s campaign have overshadowed the businessman’s unexpected victory and dogged his first five months in office.
Grandparents, grandchildren and fiancés of people in the United States will be barred from getting U.S. visas under President Donald Trump’s temporary travel ban against citizens of six Muslim-majority countries taking effect on Thursday, U.S. officials said. The administration also narrowly interpreted which refugees will be allowed into the country, saying that links
with refugee resettlement agencies would not be enough to win them admittance, likely sharply limiting the number of refugees allowed entry in coming months. The Supreme Court exempted travelers and refugees with a “bona fide relationship” with a person or entity in the United States from the ban, which Trump signed in March and which opponents have said is discriminatory.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Thursday that the United States was supportive of the International Monetary Fund’s mission, although it always wanted to make sure taxpayer funds were spent wisely. “We’re supportive of the IMF, although we’ll look at our contributions to the IMF like we look at all contributions: very carefully and making sure we’re spending
the taxpayers money properly,” Mnuchin told reporters at the White House.

APPLE’S IPHONE TURNS 10, BUMPY START FORGOTTEN
5
Apple’s iPhone turns 10 this week, evoking memories of a rocky start for the device that ended up doing most to start the smartphone revolution and stirring interest in where it will go from here. Apple has sold more than 1 billion iPhones since June 29, 2007, but the first iPhone, which launched without an App Store and was restricted to the AT&T Inc. network, was limited compared to today’s version. After sluggish initial sales, Apple
slashed the price to spur holiday sales that year. “The business model for year one of the iPhone was a disaster,” Tony Fadell, one of the Apple developers of the device, told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday. “We pivoted and figured it out in year two.” The very concept of the iPhone came as a surprise to some of Apple’s suppliers a decade ago, even though Apple, led by CEO Steve Jobs, had already expanded beyond computers with the iPod.

SEPTA fare hike takes effect Saturday Systemwide price increase will be applied to all modes of SEPTA transit. HAYDEN MITMAN @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
The cost of every service SEPTA offers — from mass transit to parking — will increase Saturday, after the transportation authority’s board voted earlier this year in favor of what they called “modest increases across all modes of travel and methods of payment.” This rate increase taking effect July 1 was set to be implemented last year but plans were put on hold as SEPTA rolled out its new SEPTA Key program. Rates will increase as follows: • Cash Fare/Quick Trip costs will increase to $2.50 from $2.25. • Discounted single ride with SEPTA Key Travel Wallet/Token will go up to $2 from $1.80. • Disabled Fare costs will rise to $1.25 from $1. • Costs for a Paratransit or Shared Ride will rise to $4.25 from $4.

Seth Williams will resign and face up to 5 years as part of guilty plea District Attorney Seth Williams has pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse
sam.newhouse@metro.us
In a surprise twist, two weeks into his federal corruption trial, District Attorney Seth Williams pleaded guilty to bribery charges on Thursday. The guilty plea included his written agreement to resign “humbly, sincerely and effective immediately,” according to the Inquirer. He reportedly must pay $64,878.22 in restitution, and he will face up to five years in prison at his Oct. 24 sentencing hearing. He was ordered detained until sentencing.
U.S. Marshals reportedly led him out of court in handcuffs. Federal jurors heard witnesses describe how Williams failed to pay his aging mother’s nursing home bills while spending her funds on his own lifestyle. They also heard from former Bucks County businessman Mohammad Ali, who candidly discussed exchanging gifts with Williams in return for favors, such as sending a police escort to help Ali skip screening at the airport. (Ali previously accepted a plea deal for bribery charges.) And staff from Williams’ political action committee said their funds went to the former DA’s social life, while they couldn’t afford their own phone bills. “Mr. Williams compromised himself and

Unfortunately, ‘talk’ is all it was.” The Philadelphia DA’s office is currently led by first assistant district attorney Kathleen Martin, who released a statement
after the guilty plea was announced praising her staff for continuing to do their jobs since Williams was indicted in March and technically remained DA. Martin told the city that with Williams gone, “their District Attorney’s Office continues the pursuit of justice and the hope for a safer city endures.”

TRUMP FUNDRAISER Trump hosts ethically questionable re-election fundraiser President Donald Trump raised more eyebrows than a plastic surgeon on Wednesday, hosting a D.C. fundraiser for his reelection which cost five figures a plate, took place at a Trump hotel from which he is supposed to be recused financially, and during which he made racist remarks from the dais. The fundraiser was held at the Trump hotel in Washing-
ton’s Old Post Office, which is leased to the Trump organization by a government agency. It cost $35,000 a plate. After taking the podium to address the assembled donors, Trump tried out different pronunciations of Qatar, before saying it didn’t matter because “you can’t help terrorists,” a CNN producer reported. The president had recently landed in hot water for excoriating Qatar, before advisers reminded (or notified) him that
the United States has a military airbase there. As of last week, Trump has visited his for-profit properties 37 times as president. Ethics experts have objected, telling Associated Press that the visits “double as a form of advertising that inappropriately enriches him.” Ahead of the dinner, the nonpartisan watchdog group American Oversight sued the General Services Administration (the government
agency that leases the hotel to the Trump Organization) to release communications between the Trump Organization and managers of the taxpayerowned hotel. “President Trump’s fundraiser isn’t just raising funds for his campaign, it’s putting money into his personal pocketbook,” said Austin Evers, American Oversight’s executive director and a State Department lawyer during the Obama administration. Trump targeted the “Morning Joe” hosts on Twitter on Thursday.
Don’t dish it out if you can’t take it. ERIN TIERNAN @ErinTiernan
erin.tiernan@metro.us
After President Donald Trump mocked MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski on Twitter Thursday morning, Brzezinski fired back with a “little hands” tweet of her own. The president bashed Brzezinski, saying she was “bleeding badly from a face-lift” when he saw her at his Mar-a-Lago resort last year. “I heard poorly rated Morning Joe speaks badly of me (don’t watch anymore). Then how come low I.Q. Crazy Mika, along with Psycho Joe, came to Mar-a-Lago 3 nights in a row around New Year’s Eve, and insisted on joining me. She was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said no!” Trump tweeted just before 9 a.m. To which Brzezinski simply tweeted a picture of the back of a Cheerios cereal box that said, “Made for little hands.” Trump’s adversaries have long focused on the size of his hands as a way to get under his skin. The insult reportedly dates back to Spy magazine editor Graydon Carter’s frequent references to Trump as a “short-fin-
GETTY IMAGES
gered vulgarian” in the 1980s. The insults have earned Carter a lifetime of letters from Trump in which he sends pictures of himself with circles around his hands. In a statement, NBC denounced the president’s remarks. “It’s a sad day for America when the president spends his time bullying, lying and spewing petty personal attacks instead of doing his job.” A top NBC spokesman said via Twitter, “Never imagined a day when I would think to myself, ‘It is beneath my dignity to respond to the President of the United States.’” Shortly before Trump’s attack on the morning show’s hosts, they earned some vitriol from another White House insider, media director Dan Scavino. “#DumbAsARockMika and lover #JealousJoe are lost, confused & saddened since @POTUS @realDonaldTrump stopped returning their calls!” Scavino wrote on Twitter. “Unhinged.” Scarborough, a former Republican congressman, and co-host Brzezinski at one time were accused of being too cozy with the Trump campaign ahead of the presidential primary, according to The Hill, but that relationship deteriorated, and Trump has frequently publicly feuded with the pair since taking office.

Airlines risk ďŹ nes, losing US access for failure to follow new security rules: OďŹƒcials Airlines that do not comply with a new U.S. directive for enhanced security measures on inbound international ights could have their certiďŹ cates to operate ights to the country revoked, a high-ranking U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) oďŹƒcial said on Thursday. Airlines that do not follow the new DHS rules could be ďŹ ned, face restricted access to U.S. airspace or have their clearance to operate ights to the country withdrawn, the oďŹƒcial said. The new security measures were designed to prevent widening a limited in-cabin ban on laptops and other large electronics. U.S. and European airlines had feared an expansion of the ban could cause major logistical problems and deter travel. The United States in March banned laptops on ights to the United States originating at 10 airports in eight countries, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and Turkey, to address fears that bombs could be concealed in electronic devices. The oďŹƒcial on Thursday said the new security directive was not in response to a speciďŹ c threat. REUTERS

FBI investigation into Bernie Sanders’ wife could kill his chances in 2020 Sen. Sanders says the move could be politically motivated. ERIN TIERNAN @ErinTiernan
erin.tiernan@metro.us
The FBI is investigating Bernie Sanders’ wife on fraud charges and the one-time presidential candidate thinks the agency’s motives are political. Sanders, who is one of the Democratic Party’s most prominent politicians, has not ruled out a 2020 presidential bid — though he’ll be 79 on Inauguration Day in 2021. Jane Sanders has hired a lawyer for an FBI probe into whether she made fraudulent claims and promises while try-
ing to secure a $10 million loan for a real estate deal for Burlington College, a now-defunct college she was president of from 2004 to 2011, The Hill reported. The college closed about a year ago due to debt taken on during Jane Sanders’ tenure. A loan application signed by Jane Sanders stated the college was ready to take in millions in pledged donations should the loan go through, many of those donations never materialized, CNN reported. Sanders defended his wife Tuesday in an interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett and suggested the timing of the investigation was politically motivated. “My wife is about the most honest person I know, Sanders said. Sanders said the FBI
[Toensing] launched this investigation. Toensing told CNN on Sunday that his hope “is for a fair, full and impartial investigation. Sanders called the investigation “pathetic.
“All that I will tell you now is it’s a sad state of affairs in America when not only we have politicians being destroyed ‌ but when you go after people’s wives. That’s pretty pathetic.â€? Colin Reed, the executive director of the GOP opposition research super PAC America Rising, told The Hill these allegations could spell bad news for a future Sanders candidacy during election season. Trust is a huge issue, especially for a presidential candidate,â€? Reed said. “The longer these narratives have to bake in with the electorate, the more effective they are when voters go to vote. We learned that from Secretary Clinton — we were able to get a four-year head start on the research for her.â€?
their schools to teach children that their president is another Hitler, Loesch says in the video. Loesch then goes on to say “they use media, celebrities and awards shows to repeat their narrative “all to make them march, make them protest, make them scream racism and sexism and xenophobia and homophobia and smash windows, burn cars, shut down interstates and airports, bully and terrorize the law abiding. According to Loesch, it’s gotten so bad the “only option left is for police to do their jobs and stop the madness. Loesch ends the video with
the NRA endorsement, “I’m the National Rie Association of America, and I’m freedom’s safest place.â€? The ad actually debuted back in April at the NRA’s Leadership Forum and was posted to the NRA’s Facebook account on June 12, but it began stirring up a response on social media Wednesday night after journalist and author Je Shartlet tweeted out a link to the video. The NRA ad has now been viewed more than 2.7 million times, with many of the 4,000 comments denouncing the “us vs. themâ€? rhetoric Loesch purports in the video. ERIN TIERNAN

NRA recruitment video calls for members to draw up arms against anti-Trump left A new NRA ad is stirring up some pretty strong “us vs. themâ€? rhetoric and earning harsh backlash on social media. In the one-minute clip, the National Rie Association never actually says who “theyâ€? are, but its message is, nonetheless, pretty clear: They’re talking about the left, the resistance. Conservative personality and NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch painted a picture of a violent leftwing movement. “They use their media to assassinate real news. They use

THE FUN STARTS HERE Ansel Elgort (with Lily James) stars in “Baby Driver.” TRISTAR PICTURES
wknd
Need for speed: The best car drivers in the movies In Edgar Wright’s “Baby Driver,” Ansel Elgort sure knows how to drive a car. He plays Baby, a getaway driver who likes to listen to music as he speeds away from the fuzz. Elgort’s a hell of a driver — one of the best of the best, right up top with any of these legendary cinematic speed freaks. MATT PRIGGE GETTY IMAGES
Steve McQueen, “Bullitt” (1968) Among the big car chases is buried in the middle of a movie that up to that point had been a subdued, realistic cop picture. Steve McQueen is a cucumber-cool lieutenant who gives chase to a hitman. They speed through San Francisco, over its epic hills, through its seaside dirt roads, all going at breakneck speed.
WARNER BROS.
Gene Hackman, “The French Connection” (1971) Three years after “Bullitt,” another cop movie one-upped it. Hackman pursues a perp who’s hopped on an El train not on foot by by car. He speeds under the tracks, trying (and sometimes failing) to avoid trash cans and passers-by. The “Bullitt” chase is smooth; the one in “The French Connection” is a five-minute panic attack.
Dan Aykroyd, “The Blues Brothers” (1980)
GETTY IMAGES
He makes vodka that comes in fauxcrystal skulls; he actually really does believe in ghosts. But one thing no one can take away from Dan Aykroyd is this: He’s the one behind the wheel here, leading to some of the largest pile-ups in movie history.
GETTY IMAGES
In Steven Spielberg’s TV movie, we never see who’s driving a tanker truck that’s mysteriously trailing a stressed businessman (Dennis Weaver). But whoever it is is quite insistent. Sometimes the truck tailgates him; other times it tries to drive him off the road.
UNIVERSAL
Barry Newman, “Vanishing Point” (1971) The ’70s are a goldmine for trashy, clangy, fast-moving speed freak pictures. The king of driving, though, was Barry Newman. A salty, rough piece of work, he’s not a looker like Peter Fonda. But man, can he drive. “Vanishing Point” is Newman’s masterpiece, in which he speeds cross-country in a 1970 Dodge Challenger and winds up losing his mind.
Robert De Niro, “Ronin” (1998)
MGM
With one of his last pictures, the great John Frankenheimer banged out three or four of the greatest car chases in movie history. It’s hard to choose a favorite, but the one where our gang of thieves, led by Robert De Niro, drives into oncoming traffic might be the one.

As the ’70s waned, we suddenly got lots of movies about redneck racers. The biggest was “Smokey and the Bandit.” Burt Reynolds at his Burt Reynoldsiest plays a trucker hired to transport bootleg Coors east of the Mississippi, back when it was illegal to do so. The movie grossed almost as much as “Star Wars.”
Ryan O’Neal, “The Driver” (1978) Ryan O’Neal is a limited actor, but use him right and you strike gold. He’s a charmer in Peter Bogdanovich’s “Paper Moon”; he’s an ideal cad in Stanley Kubrick’s “Barry Lyndon.” And he’s basically a living mannequin in Walter Hill’s getaway driver thriller, which is so minimalist O’Neal is credited only as “The Driver.” WARNER BROS.
“Where is Mel Gibson as ‘Mad’ Max Rockatansky?” you might have asked while reading this list. Well, guess what? Even the original “Mad Max” has nothing on Charlize Theron’s Furiosa. All hail Furiosa!

14 WKND “The Beguiled
Steve Carell pulls double duty as Gru and his brother Dru in “Despicable Me 3. ILLUMINATION AND UNIVERSAL PICTURES
“Despicable Me 3â€? Director: Pierre CoďŹƒn, Kyle Balda Stars: Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig Rating: PG It had to happen eventually. The ďŹ rst “Despicable Meâ€? was a breath of fresh air — a loopy absurd-a-thon with guns that ďŹ red octopi and shrunken elephants and, of course, those babbling yellow whatzits known as Minions. It seemed hard to repeat its magic formula, but the sequel heroically did just that. Even the Minions spin-o movie was ďŹ ne, not because it was good but for the simple fact that Minions are mysteriously never not delightful. The threequel is another matter. It’s ďŹ ne. But it’s depressing that it’s only ďŹ ne, because it
shows a once-inspired series is ďŹ nally low on gas. The hook this time is reformed supervillain Gru (Steve Carell) learns he has a brother. He’s Dru (Carell, too) and he’s a trust fund failure, devastated that he never got into the family business of stealing giant objects, like pyramids or the Eiel Tower. Gru wouldn’t mind backsliding, knowing full well that would ruin his current domesticated semiparadise. Dru is mildly funny. He has the same unplaceable Eastern European accent as Gru, but he also has hair — longish blonde locks he likes to head-ip a la Farrah Fawcett — and no skill with thievery. That’s about it. Eventually, Gru also has to battle a far richer nemesis: a kid TV star named Balthazar Bratt (voiced by Trey Parker) who aged into a bitter world-class
thief, who so pines for his long-gone ’80s glory that he still rocks shoulder pads and a bad mustache and a mullet. Bratt carries the movie whenever he’s onscreen, but it goes slack when he’s not. There aren’t even much in the way of Minions. They do score the ďŹ lm’s ďŹ nest moment — yet another musical number, but this one for Gilbert and Sullivan’s “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major Generalâ€? (!!). They even manage to do it during a stretch that should be the low-point: a beyond-crass crossover moment with the awful movie “Sing,â€? done only because that was made by the same animation house. That’s “Despicable Me 3â€? in a nutshell: periodically charming but also utterly, despicably cynical. MATT PRIGGE

The original “The Beguiledâ€? sounds, as they say today, “problematic.â€? For starters, it stars Clint Eastwood. Made in 1971, this Southern Gothic potboiler ďŹ nds the era’s manliest man playing a wounded Union solider during the Civil War, trapped in an all-girls school with repressed women. It doesn’t end well. It sounds like exactly the kind of ďŹ lm that should be remade by one of our most acclaimed female ďŹ lmmakers, only right this time. But not so fast. The original
is actually great — a fascinating war between the lurid and the sensitive. And SoďŹ a Coppola’s loose (but not that loose) remake is fascinating in some of the same ways, even as it views the same story through a female lens. Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning are the women tending to — and often ogling — a quietly predatory Colin Farrell, who thinks he’s a fox in a henhouse but may be the one who’s really the chicken. Coppola spends most of her eorts highlighting female horniness. She dwells on charged glances, slack-jawed stares, Kidman slowly washing Farrell’s
shirtless bod. There’s only one sex scene, and it lacks a lick of esh, but this is one sexy movie. “The Beguiledâ€? may be the most audience-friendly ďŹ lm Coppola’s made, but it’s still a SoďŹ a Coppola movie. Like “The Virgin Suicidesâ€? and “The Bling Ring,â€? it’s another languid hang in a cloistered (and, yes, blindingly white) microcosm, away from the outside world. It must be said that Coppola slightly bungles the shocker of a climax; the original did it better. Her version is at its best before the release, when it’s all about the sick tension bubbling under the surface like red hot lava. MP

New Men’s Sex Pill Makes Viagra Obsolete Scientific advance made just for older men. Works on both men’s physical ability and their desire in bed. By Harlan S. Waxman Health News Syndicate New York – If you’re like the rest of us guys over 50, you probably already know the truth… Prescription ED pills may work, but they don’t solve all the probems in the bedroom and they are very expensive. Dr. Bassam Damaj, chief scientific officer at the world famous Innovus Pharma Laboratories, explains, “As we get older, we need more help in bed. Not only does our desire fade; but erections can be soft or feeble, one of the main complaints with prescription pills. Besides, they’re expensive… costing as much as $50.00 each.” Plus, it does nothing to stimulate your brain to want sex. “I don’t care what you take; if you aren’t interested in sex, you can’t get or keep an erection. It’s physiologically impossible,” said Dr. Damaj.
MADE JUST FOR MEN OVER 50 But now, for the first time ever, there’s a pill made just for older men. It’s called Vesele®. A new pill that helps you in bed by stimulating your body and your brainwaves. So Vesele® can work even when nothing else worked before. The new men’s pill is not a drug. It’s something completely different. Because you don’t need a prescription for Vesele®, sales are exploding. The maker just can’t produce enough of it to keep up with demand. Even doctors are having a tough time getting their hands on it. So what’s all the fuss about?

DESIRE
The new formula takes on erectile problems with a whole new twist. It doesn’t just address the physical problems of getting older; it works on the mental part of sex too. Unlike the expensive prescriptions, the new pill stimulates your sexual brain chemistry as well, actually helping you regain the passion and burning desire you had for your partner again. So you will want sex with the hunger and stamina of a 25-year-old.
THE BRAIN CONNECTION Vesele® takes off where Viagra® only begins. Thanks to a discovery made by 3 Nobel-Prize winning scientists, Vesele® has become the first ever patented supplement to harden you and your libido. So you regain your desire as well as the ability to act on it. In a 16-week clinical study, scientists from the U.S.A. joined forces to prove Nitric Oxide’s effects on the cardio vascular system. They showed that Nitric Oxide could not only increase your ability to get an erection, it would also work on your brainwaves to stimulate your desire for sex. The results were remarkable and published in the world’s most respected medical journals.
THE SCIENCE The study asked men, 45 to 65 years old to take the main ingredient in Vesele® once a day. Then they were instructed not to change the way they eat or exercise but to take Vesele® twice a day. What happened next was remarkable. Virtually every man in the study who took Vesele® twice a day reported a huge difference in their desire for sex. In layman’s terms, they were horny again. They also experienced harder erections that lasted for almost 20 minutes. The placebo controlled group (who received sugar pills) mostly saw no difference. AN UNEXPECTED BONUS: The study results even showed an impressive increase in the energy, brainpower and memory of the participants.

“Once we saw the results we knew we had a game-changer said Dr. Damaj. We get hundreds of calls a day from people begging us for a bottle. It’s been crazy. We try to meet the crushing demand for Vesele®.”
VESELE® PASSED THE TEST “As an expert in the development of sexual dysfunction, I’ve studied the effectiveness of Nitric Oxide on the body and the brain. I’m impressed by the way it increases cerebral and penile blood flow. The result is evident in the creation of Vesele®.
New men’s pill overwhelms your senses with sexual desire as well as firmer, long-lasting erections. There’s never been anything like it before. It’s sure-fire proof that the mind/body connection is unbeatable when achieving and maintaining an erection and the results are remarkable” said Dr. Damaj.
HERE’S WHAT MEN ARE SAYING • I’m ready to go sexually and mentally. • More frequent erections at night and in the morning. • I have seen a change in sexual desire. • Typically take 1 each morning and 1 each night. Great Stamina, Great Results! • An increased intensity in orgasms. • My focus (mental) has really improved… Huge improvement. • Amazing orgasms! • I feel more confident in bed.

Too early projection of Flyers’ blue line How many of the Flyers’ top, young defensive prospects will crack the NHL roster? KYLE PHILLIPPI @MetroPhilly sports@metro.us
The NHL free agency period is set to kick off on July 1, with many teams around the league eager to fill in voids. The Flyers likely won’t be among those spenders, outside of the goalie market. Once they find their complement netminder to Michael Neuvirth, the team is likely to keep everything else within the house. Ron Hextall, speaking to Jason Myrtetus on his podcast, Stick 2 Hockey, made it sound like the young defensive prospects — Sam Morin, Robert Hagg and Travis Sanheim — will “get a
shot to play on the team.” He also added that they’re not hesitant to put young players in if they’re ready to play at that level. That being said, how many of these kids should be expected to crack the defensive pairings? Here’s our best look at what it could shake out to be: Andrew MacDonald/ Ivan Provorov These two spent the majority of the 2016-17 season together and were the top defensemen on the team in regards to time on ice. They were paired together for nearly 70 percent of the year. There’s little reason to expect Dave Hakstol to look elsewhere for a partner to Provorov — the team’s No. 1 defenseman — because he won’t want one of the rookies logging heavy minutes next to him, nor would it make
sense to line up Shayne Gostisbehere alongside him. Shayne Gostisbehere/ Radko Gudas It was a somewhat frustrating season for Ghost in year two, but he’ll get a fresh slate in his junior season. He also bounced around with partners, as well, sometimes as a result of his uneven play and occasional benchings that shuffled the lineup. He spent a good portion of the year with Nick Schultz, who won’t be in the mix this year, meaning the likely second pair partner will be Gudas. The balance on this pair should be perfect as Gostisbehere can continue to be aggressive at times while Gudas sticks to his “stay-at-home” mentality. It’s also ideal to have a bigger, physical body next to Gostisbehere and no one fits that bill better
Soon, possibly very soon, the Flyers’ blue line will turn from a liability to a strength.
than Gudas. Sam Morin/Brandon Manning The first newcomer, Morin slides into the lineup where he’ll be expected to showcase his physical prowess all while being eased into the NHL. His partner will either be Manning or another rookie, Robert Hagg. Will the coaching staff be willing to use a rookie pair together? If so, Hagg

definitely would be a likely third pair partner for Morin. More likely, though, is Hakstol mixing and matching between the three to start the season. Eventually, the Morin/Hagg pair should win out and be the regular rotation, but Manning certainly will get his shot in the beginning. While Travis Sanheim doesn’t crack the lineup out of camp, there may not be another defen-

seman on this roster outside Provorov with as much upside as him. He has the least amount of experience to his fellow rookies (Hagg spent three years in Lehigh Valley, Morin spent two) so it’s very likely the team lets him develop a bit longer down there before making the jump. He’ll be the first one called up whenever an injury or poor play becomes an issue on the blue line.

Expect the unexpected from Hextall as Flyers search for goalie in free agency Anders Nilsson and Keith Kinkaid are two low-key names to watch out for when free agency starts. ERIC GOLDSTEIN @EricEsponda sports@metro.us
The NHL free agency market is officially open for business on Saturday, and for the fourth straight year the Flyers are expected to sit on the periphery of it. General Manager Ron Hextall said at the draft last week that he will be on the hunt for a veteran goalie to platoon with Michael Neuvirth, but also will possibly look for an experienced defenseman — maybe bring back Mark Streit on a one-year deal? — to add depth and leadership to a young unit and hopes to re-sign
forward Jordan Weal. Otherwise, don’t expect a bidding war for any high-profile free agents. The true action will be between the pipes. There are a handful of proven veterans that have been tied to the Flyers such as Ryan Miller, Brian Elliott, Jonathan Bernier and, of course, Steve Mason. Each one is a safe choice and conveniently checks off the right boxes like low cost and a shortterm tenure. If history is any indication, though, Hextall has rarely been predictable — see the Brayden Schenn trade at the draft last Friday or the hiring of Dave Hakstol as head coach — and typically zigs when others zag. Which leads us to believe Hextall has not targeted any of the netminders mentioned above as his top options, and has already stated he

Nilsson. Last season, the 6-foot-6, 225-pound goalie went 10-10-4 as a backup in Buffalo. Despite a porous defense in front of him, the 27-year-old finished with a 2.67 goals against average and an

impressive .923 save percentage. Basically, he saw a lot of shots in the 23 games he started and stopped many of them. Despite his size, Nilsson is athletic, moves well and obviously takes up a
lot of space. The Flyers are familiar with him after he turned aside 39 of 40 shots in a 4-1 win over them in January. After making $1 million with the Sabres last season, he could be signed for less than $2 million per season over two or three years and make 30-40 starts — all important factors the Flyers are looking for in their search. Another name to keep an eye on is Devils backup Keith Kinkaid. He is 23-27 with a respectable 2.68 GAA and .912 save percentage over the last three years with New Jersey and made just $725,000 last year. Nilsson or Kinkaid aren’t splashy but both are ideal and inexpensive stopgaps to work alongside Neuvirth for a couple of seasons until one of the Flyers’ coveted prospects is ready.
Union goalie Blake playing like best in the league There were several moments in the Union’s (5-7-4) 1-0 win over D.C. United (5-9-3) on Saturday where their lead seemed destined to slip away. After taking the lead in the 31st minute off of a Fafa Picault goal, Union goalie Andre Blake was all that stood in the way of a United equalizer in the 70th minute. United midfielder Lamar Neagle approached the penalty kick hash and delivered a low strike to the right corner of net which was quickly denied by the outstretched arm of Blake. It was Blake’s first penalty kick save since May 2016 and led to a huge ovation from the Philly faithful in attendance. “I think it’s the loudest the crowd has been all season on that save, Union manager Jim Curtin said. “That was as loud as this place has got, maybe ever, to be honest. But just moments after the jubilation subsided, booing and confusion ensued. In the 75th minute, United midfielder Luciano

Acosta was shown a red card after appearing to kick Union midfielder Haris Medunjanin as the two were heading out of bounds. Instead of United playing the rest of the game with 10 men, the referee mysteriously rescinded the card and let play continue. The Union hung on for three points and Blake notched his sixth shutout of the season, ending a three-game losing streak. “He’s, for me, by far the best goalie in the league, Picault said. “I’m really happy to have him on our side. Every week, week in and week out, he’s shown great perfor-

mances. It’s emotional for me during the games to watch that. It gives me a lot of motivation to keep going. Riding Blake’s hot hand, the ninth-place Union still have a firm grasp on playoff positioning. They’re just five points out of sixth place in the Eastern Conference. “At this stage of the year, [the win] is a huge three points, Curtin said. “It’s a fine line between wins and losses in this league, we’ve been on the tough end of some and tonight we came out on the right end because of Andre. Libra Keep a steady pace and a poker face as you deal with others. Too much of anything will cost you one way or another. Keep the peace and maintain equilibrium.
Taurus Express your feelings and explore your relationship options. Whether it is a business or personal connection, taking the time to get to know him or her better will pay off.
Scorpio You’ll be tempted by outside influences. Refuse to get involved in something that you don’t like just to fit in. An honest approach to life will bring the best results.
Gemini Fixing up your space to better suit your needs will make you feel better about moving forward at your own speed. Adjust to what you can afford.
Sagittarius If you want change, be the one to make it happen. Being an instigator instead of a complainer will result in greater satisfaction and a higher profile.
Cancer Problems at home or work will escalate if you overreact Look inward and rely on the people you deem honest and responsible.
Capricorn Look at something objectively before signing up. You are best off taking baby steps if you want to avoid getting into something too deep. Time is on your side.
Leo Stay on top of what’s going on around you. Avoid getting involved in other people’s affairs. Stick to what you know, and take care of your responsibilities first.
Aquarius Look for alternative options if you face a roadblock. Relying on experience and calling in favors will help you bypass something that has the potential to ruin your plans.
Virgo Concentrate on how you can make positive changes that will help you get ahead. Don’t worry about the actions of others if they don’t affect you.
Pisces Don’t hold back when dealing with someone trying to dump responsibilities in your lap. Speak up if you want to avoid being taken for granted. EUGENIA LAST
