MORE STATES REFUSE VOTER DATA REQUEST
1
Maryland, Delaware and Louisiana on Monday joined a growing number of U.S. states that have refused to hand over voter data to a commission established by President Donald Trump to investigate possible voting fraud. More than 20 states, including Virginia, Kentucky, California, New York and Massachusetts, have declined to provide some or all of the information that the panel requested,
saying it was unnecessary and violated privacy. Republican Trump created the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity in May after making unsubstantiated claims that millions of people voted illegally for his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, in last November’s election.
N.KOREA TEST-LAUNCHES NJ END GOVERNMENT ICBM DAYS BEFORE G-20 SHUTDOWN OF STATE

North Korea said it successfully test-launched a first intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), which analysts said could put all of the U.S. state of Alaska in range for the first time. Fox News and NBC said U.S. officials had told them they believed Tuesday’s test was of an ICBM, marking a worrying milestone in Pyongyang’s missile development. CNN quoted officials as saying
it was probably a two-stage ICBM. The launch, on the eve of Independence Day, took place days before leaders from the Group of 20 nations were due to discuss steps to rein in North Korea’s weapons program, which it has pursued in defiance of United Nations Security Council sanctions North Korea’s state media said the launch was ordered and supervised by leader Kim Jong Un.

New Jersey ended a partial government shutdown just in time for the Fourth of July holiday on Tuesday, helping New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie move past the embarrassment of being photographed on a beach that had been closed to the public. The state had suspended nonessential services for three days after failing to reach budget agreements. The Republican governor signed
the budget bill after late-night negotiations with state legislatures. New Jersey was one of nine states that had missed their deadlines for enacting budgets in time for the July 1 start of the fiscal year.

ISIS FIGHTS FIERCELY IN SHRINKING STRONGHOLDS
5
Western-backed forces edged into the final redoubts of the two capitals of Islamic State’s self-declared caliphate in Iraq and Syria on Tuesday, hampered by fierce resistance from the militants and the presence of human shields. Iraqi commanders have predicted final victory in Mosul this week after a grinding eight-month assault on the once two-million-strong city pushed Islamic State into a rectangle no more than 300-by-
500 meters beside the Tigris river. In Raqqa, Islamic State’s headquarters in northern Syria from where it plotted attacks around the world, U.S.-backed militia were fighting inside the historic Old City after coalition airstrikes breached its walls in two places. Victory over the hardline militants in both cities would mark the effective end of the three-year-old caliphate, although a few towns and large rural areas of Iraq and Syria remain under their control.

Fixing Philly: Bringing more minorities into trade unions City Council has new programs aimed at diversifying the union workforce, but that goal is easier said than done, workers say. HAYDEN MITMAN @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
In Philadelphia, it has been historically difficult for minority workers to enter the unions. Real estate developer and retired Philadelphia police Sgt. Jihad Ali compared it to a “glass wall,” similar to the oft discussed glass ceiling women face in the workforce. Ali referenced a report from the Mayor’s Advisory Commission on Construction Industry Diversity, from March 2009, to explain how the loss of manufacturing jobs in the city lead to the rise of unions and, due to nepotism and racism, minorities lost blue collar work to the unions. “Since then, it’s like there’s been a line drawn in the sand,” he said in a recent interview. “It’s really hard to get that work … It’s like a glass wall, because you can only go so high and it’s really hard to get in.” Last week, City Council unveiled a trio of programs aimed at helping minority workers break into the city’s trade unions. With these new initiatives, some are excited about the opportunities they provide, while others interviewed had concerns that they don’t go far enough. The programs are: • Brandywine Realty Trust’s Neighborhood Engagement Initiative — a five-year, $5.6 million initiative tied to a $3.5 billion Schuylkill Yards planned community in West Philly. • Penn Medicine’s PennAssist program, linked to the university’s planned New Patient Pavilion to be built at
33rd Street at Convention Avenue. • The city’s PHL Pipeline, part of the $500 million Rebuild initiative aimed at improving the city’s parks and rec centers. Each program has unique elements, but they all endeavor to help women and minorities obtain apprentice opportunities with contractors and obtain membership in the city’s trade unions. As Philadelphia Daily News columnist Solomon Jones pointed out in a recent column, a 2008 document called the Philadelphia Building and Construction Trades Council AFL-CIO Diversity Commitment and Plan said that in 12 of the city’s unions “just 19 percent of … members were women or people of color.” And, more recently, a 2016 study found that about $290 million of $951 million in city construction contracts the year prior had been awarded to businesses owned by minorities, women or those with disabilities. According to Walt McGill, director of the Construction Apprentice Preparatory Program, which has been sponsored by Brandywine Realty Trust for its initiative, the city’s new programs are aimed directly at targeting the very nepotism and racism that has kept minorities from joining the trade unions. “The hurdle was really information,” said McGill, who is called “Uncle Walt” by his students. “There is an issue with racism, but that’s everywhere. There is an issue with nepotism, but that’s everywhere. We tell our guys to just don’t worry about that … because, when someone says no, we just keep on going.”

What do you say to Vladimir Putin? That depends. Are you Donald Trump? If not, you’d surely want to confront the Russian strongman on his illegal annexation of Ukrainian territory, his cynical support of the brutal Syrian regime and, especially, his campaign to alter the results of the 2016 presidential election in the United States. All are examples of abusive behavior by America’s enemy number one. But when Donald has his first-ever sit-down with Vladimir on Friday at the G-20 summit in Munich? You’d better not count on any of that tough stuff coming up. Our president, quick to body slam anyone who displeases him, turns into Mister Softee whenever Moscow is mentioned. Since last fall, he’s had big trouble admitting that Russia hacked our election — first denying it happened, then dismissing U.S. intelligence reports, then blaming the Chinese and or maybe “somebody sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds.” When two of Putin’s closet Sergeys, Ambassador Kislyak and Foreign Minister Lavrov, dropped by the White House in May, all Trump could complain about was the “real nut job” he’d just fired as FBI
director for investigating the Russian hack. Why would Trump end the Russian coddling on Friday afternoon? He won’t. We just learned yesterday that the face-to-face in Munich will be an “official bilateral meeting,” not an “informal pull-aside.” It’s hard to know how much of this Trump fully grasps, but such arcane distinctions actually matter in the world of international diplomacy. For almost two years, the Russians have been seeking a full-fledged, president-topresident sit-down. Barack Obama, who wasn’t so cozy with Putin, demanded real concessions in exchange, perhaps a shift in Syria or a pullback in the Ukraine. When Putin didn’t deliver, no formal meeting was held. Well, those days are clearly done. Now, Putin’s getting his official meeting, and it didn’t cost him a thing. What will the two men say on Friday? It’s likely Putin will ask for the return of the Russian spy nests in Maryland and Long Island that Obama ordered seized after the election. Trump might even gently mention Ukraine and Syria. What’s almost impossible to imagine is this: Trump grilling his buddy Putin on how the Russians helped to pick the current U.S. president. In anticipation of President Trump’s proposal to generate a trillion-dollar investment for our nation’s infrastructure, the CEO Council for Growth, a council of the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia, worked with public and private partners to develop a plan called “Connecting the Region: A Transportation Strategy for Greater Philadelphia. This strategic portfolio of interconnecting transportation projects identifies nine key infrastructure investment areas that are likely to accelerate development and catalyze job growth and is achievable within the next 10 years with a total cost of $7 billion to $9 billion. Our strategy calls for improvements to our global gateways by investing in intercity rail stations at 30th Street Station, Newark and a new station at Philadelphia International Airport. The economic core between Center City and University City continues to thrive due to the tremendous growth of our innovation, knowledge and entrepreneurial economies. Our strategy emphasizes the advancement of the 30th Street District plan and Schuylkill Yards development. The addition of a Market-Frankford line station at 20th Street will support the growth of Center City to the west. Extending the Norristown high-speed line and transforming Roosevelt Boulevard will bind King of Prussia and Northeast Philadelphia, respectively, back to our region. Expanded mass transit services at the Navy Yard, enhancements at Walter Rand Transportation Center and elsewhere in Camden, and the integration of neighborhoods currently divided by the Vine Street Expressway will reconnect isolated communities to opportu-

nities for residential and commercial development. Lastly, we call for investments that will adapt our transportation system to the needs of the next generation by expanding capacity along the MarketFrankford line and within the Regional Rail systems by procuring new train cars, extending platforms, and improving frequency. The future of our region rests in part on our ability to both secure infrastructure spending and activate new, innovative ways to direct more resources to help strengthen our communities. The CEO Council for Growth looks forward to working with the administration and our regional congressional delegation to pass a bipartisan infrastructure spending bill and secure funding for implementation of the projects that will help us become a global region. Hot dog contest, fireworks, beachgoing mark July Fourth holiday Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest ended with a record-breaking number of frankfurters consumed. Americans celebrated the July Fourth holiday on Tuesday with the reopening of a New Jersey beach closed to everyone but the governor after a government shutdown, a recordsetting hot-dog eating contest and fireworks displays across the country. Beachgoing, baseball and fireworks, Fourth of July traditions, were embraced throughout the country, along with family cookouts that favored hot dogs and hamburgers. An informal peace-andlove festival in an Oregon forest drew more than 13,000 people including two men who died of apparently natural causes. The United States commemorated the Declaration of Independence, adopted by the 13 American colonies on July 4, 1776. The document proclaims unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. New Jersey and Maine ended partial government shutdowns just in time for the holiday. A deal between Gov. Chris Christie and legislative leaders allowed New Jersey to reopen parks and beaches, including Island Beach State Park, where the Star-Ledger newspaper on Sunday captured photos of Christie with family and friends. The beach was otherwise deserted because of the shutdown, prompting a barrage of internet satires placing Christie in his beach chair at famous beach scenes from D-Day to the “Planet of the Apes.” An unapologetic Christie told reporters he would rejoin his family in the governor’s residence at Island Beach State
Park once the budget was signed. Major League Baseball had a full schedule of 15 games in mostly packed stadiums across the country. Another type of competition, rapid-fire eating contests, also took place nationwide, including one for hot dogs in Coney Island, Brooklyn, that was shown live on national television. Joey Chestnut won his 10th Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest by downing a record 72 frankfurters in 10 minutes. In Washington, Molly Schuyler defended her title by chowing down 21 Z-Burger hamburgers in 10 minutes, Washington’s WTOP television reported. More than 13,000 people gathered for an informal peace-and-love celebration in Oregon’s Malheur National Forest, where two people died of nonviolent causes, a spokeswoman said. Professing no leaders and no organization, the Rainbow Family Gathering marked July Fourth with “caretaking of mother earth, nonviolence and living a compassionate and loving life,” according to a blog. A 72-year-old man died on Monday and a 20-yearold man collapsed and died on Tuesday, forest spokeswoman Traci Weaver said. A doctor administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation to the 20-year-old for 15 to 20 minutes but could not revive him, Weaver said. There were 15 arrests, mostly for driving under the influence, drugs or disorderly conduct, in addition to 108 violations and 432 warnings. Visitors were both rowdy and respectful, Weaver said, and the large crowd inevitably degraded the forest with trash, waste and trampling. REUTERS

Pressure builds on Trump at home over pledge for closer Moscow ties Trump has signaled an interest in cooperating with Russia to defeat Islamic State in Syria and to reduce nuclear stockpiles. During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump praised Russian President Vladimir Putin as a “strong leader” with whom he would like to reset tense U.S.-Russian relations. But as Trump heads to his first face-to-face meeting as president with Putin on Friday at the G-20 summit in Germany, he is under pressure at home to take a tough line with the Kremlin. Allegations of Russian meddling in last year’s U.S. election have alarmed both Repub-
lican and Democratic lawmakers, who are pushing to extend tough sanctions placed on Russia following its 2014 annexation of Crimea, a peninsula belonging to Ukraine. Lawmakers including Republican Sen. Cory Gardner are also concerned Russia has prolonged the civil war in Syria by backing its President Bashar al-Assad, a strongman whose forces have used chemical weapons against insurgents and civilians. The chaos has fueled instability in the region and a flood of migrants to Europe. “President [Trump)] needs to make it clear that the continued aggression by Russia around the globe … is unacceptable, and that they will be held accountable,” said Gard-

The U.S. intelligence community has concluded Russia sponsored hacking of Demo-

Lunar robots put to the test on Sicily’s Mount Etna A robot wheels across a rocky, windswept landscape that looks like the surface of some distant planet from a science fiction film. But it is not in outer space, it’s on the slopes of Europe’s most active volcano. Mount Etna, in Sicily, is a test bed for the approximately 3-foot high, four-wheeled machine ahead of a future mission to the moon. It is being conducted by the German Aerospace Center, the agency which runs Germany’s space program. The program has enlisted experts from Germany, Britain, the United States and Italy to research ROBEX (Robotic Exploration of Extreme Environments) with the

aim of improving robotic equipment that will be used in space. “This is aimed at simulating a future, hypothetical landing mission on the moon or Mars and they use a lot of robots which are there to transport and install different instruments,” said Boris Behncke, a volcanologist from the National Vulcanology
Institute in Catania, near Mount Etna. Scientists also hope to use the robots to explore the depths of Mount Etna and relay back useful technical data on seismic movement. The techniques learned on Etna would then be deployed in lunar missions or in the exploration of Mars. An initial robotic testing phase has nearly been completed on the Piano del Lago area of the volcano, a desolate stretch of terrain buffeted by strong winds. Next, a network of equipment including rover robots and drones will be mounted to monitor seismic activity that closely simulates that which would be used on the moon. REUTERS

Jay-Z and Kanye are mad at each other A few days ago, news broke that Kanye West had cut ties with the Jay-Z-helmed streaming service Tidal. Turns out? It’s personal. TMZ claims that Jay wasn’t too happy about the time Kanye went on a rant at one of his concerts, detailing JayZ’s failures as a friend. Kanye was admitted to the hospital for mental health treatment soon after. “Kanye was days away from going to a psych ward with some really serious mental issues,” a source tells the site. “We get why he [Jay] was upset, but give Kanye a break.” But apparently, Jay-Z doesn’t find the whole “mental health troubles” thing to be a very good excuse. In his song “Kill Jay Z,” he basically says as much, saying of Kanye, “But if everybody’s crazy, you’re the one that’s insane.” OK, but. Jay-Z is 47

The 28-year-old onetime “Dancing with the Stars” contestant admitted to being six months sober via an Instagram post with really flattering lighting. You know, the kind that looks effortless, but you know baby girl spent like, a whole hour setting it up. “I will be the first one to say I’m not perfect and I mess up sometimes and every once in a while [sic] I get it right but I wanted to share this because I am really proud of myself.” Holy run-on sentence! “Yesterday I celebrated 6 Months of Sobriety,” she continued. “It’s not something I planned on but after the long journey of getting here I can honestly say I have never been more proud of myself in my entire life.” Good for you, Rumer.

Kirsten Dunst is cool objectifying Colin Farrell

What’s in a Name? Reliability Consistency Commitment
Mortgage Rates In “The Beguiled,” in theaters Friday, Kirsten Dunst plays one of the staff at an all-girl’s school during the Civil War. They wind up rescuing a wounded (and superhot) Union soldier, played by Colin Farrell. FOCUS FEATURES

Want to feel old? Sofia Coppola’s first feature, “The Virgin Suicides,” was filmed almost 20 years ago. Even Kirsten Dunst is horrified by this. At the time, the actress was 16. (She’s 35 now.) Back then, she was still considered one of the most esteemed child actresses of her time, beloved for “Interview with the Vampire,” “Little Women” and “Jumanji.” “The Virgin Suicides,” though, was the first time we saw her as a young woman. “I had to do a lot of things in that film I wasn’t necessarily comfortable doing,” Dunst recalls. “But Sofia protected me. I had this montage of making out with different boys. And I wouldn’t make out with them. She told me to just move my head back and forth into their neck. It would look like we were making out.” Nice fake-out. “I was happy my transition from being thought of more as a child actress into an adult was in the hands of Sofia,” Dunst adds. Since then, the awardwinning actress has worked with Coppola three times; the two are a female version of Scorsese and De Niro. Dunst
played doomed royalty in “Marie Antoinette” and had a brief part, as herself, in “The Bling Ring.” She’s back in Coppola’s award-winning new film, “The Beguiled,” a loose remake of the 1971 classic — arguably the weirdest movie on Clint Eastwood’s résumé. Dunst plays Edwina, second-in-command at a remote Mississippi allgirls’ school (run by Nicole Kidman, and whose students include Elle Fanning). It’s three years into the Civil War, and the girls are shocked — and a little stoked — to rescue a wounded Union soldier, played by Colin Farrell. As in the original, he proceeds to worm his way into their good graces, then goes a bit further (nudge, nudge). But since this is a film directed by a woman, you get a movie where it’s the man, not the women, who’s the object of desire. “It’s rare to see Colin Farrell being the only one bare-chested in a movie,” Dunst says, chuckling. “He was a good sport about being objectified at times.” Meanwhile, the female characters are covered head-to-toe in period garb. Coppola made them all take a deep dive in 19th century refinement: sewing classes, knitting classes. They learned dances and songs and did Bible study. Another rule: No ankles could be shown. At least they had fun with the strict refinements of the 19th century. Craft

“The Beguiled” arrives only a couple weeks before “SpiderMan: Homecoming,” the second reboot of a series that originally co-starred Dunst. Years ago, back during press for one of the “Spider-Mans,” Dunst hatched a crazy idea for a spin-off: Mary Jane would get pregnant with Peter Parker’s baby, and the whole film would be a dark and unsettling psychological thriller — think “Rosemary’s Baby” — about her dread over giving birth to a spider-toddler. It never happened, of course. “I still think it would be cool to do,” Dunst says. “It’s such a unique idea; no one’s done that with a superhero character — like an independent version. Maybe I’ll ask Sam [Raimi, “Spider-Man” director] if he’d be into it. It would be really dark.”
services always poured their drinks into the same plastic cups you see at keggers. “You’d see these little girls with red Solo cups, so it looked like we all had beers in our hands,” Dunst remembers. “We made this little ‘Girls Gone Wild’ video, where Elle and I were in our outfits and holding these red solo cups. We’d run up to Sofia, then we’d flash our ankles. We’re gonna put it out there; I’ll Instagram it or something.”

Holly Hunter is all about some motherly love The Oscar-winner gushes about playing Zoe Kazan’s mom in “The Big Sick.”
Holly Hunter plays the mother of a comatose Zoe Kazan hanging with her new exboyfriend (Kumail Nanjiani) in “The Big Sick,” in theaters Friday. NICOLE RIVELLI
MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Over her career, Holly Hunter has played plenty of anguished characters. Sometimes it’s for laughs (“Raising Arizona”). Sometimes it’s deadly serious (“The Piano,” her Oscar-winning role). In “The Big Sick,” it’s both. Hunter, 58, has always been drawn to playing people at their lowest ebb. “Generally characters are in a certain amount of misery, because we are watching them. We are privy to their lives at a time of intense conflict. Movies tend to be about a not-great part of somebody’s life,” Hunter explains. Even a very film as funny as “The Big Sick” — a nimble blend of comedy
and drama — is no exception. It’s based on the life of its screenwriters, “Silicon Valley” star Kumail Nanjiani (who stars) and his wife, Emily V. Gordon, relating when she fell into a deep coma during their courtship. “This is about a life in jeopardy, and what that traumatizing event brings out in all those people around her. That’s why we watch,” Hunter says. At the same time,
Hunter gets to portray something very positive, very inspiring in “The Big Sick”: Beth’s daughter (played by Zoe Kazan) may spend most of the movie comatose, but it’s clear they have a great, great relationship. “For me, the opportunity was to portray this particular mother’s love — but also her ‘like.’ She likes her daughter, because her daughter has allowed herself to be known by her mother,”
says Hunter. Healthy mother-daughter relationships a r e rare
A movie for our times A lot of the talk about “The Bick” has been about how timely it is, with a hero who’s from Pakistan. To Hunter, “The Big Sick” isn’t really story about immigrants. It’s a story about these specific people. “In the time we’re living in, it’s fantastic to have that be a spinoff conversation,” Hunter says. But that’s not why Nanjiani and Gordon wrote it. “They were trying to accurately document this really complicated event. It’s an incidental thing; it’s part of the DNA. But it’s not the main thing.”
in movies, she’s found: “Usually it’s strained, or it’s two-dimensional or it’s cliched. It would be the overbearing mother and the suffocated daughter. Or they’re strangers to each other.” Beth and her husband (Ray Romano) spend a lot of “The Big Sick” bonding with Nanjiani’s character (also named Kumail). But their relationship is initially strained, GETTY IMAGES
as Kumail had recently dumped Beth because he was scared to tell his traditional Pakistani parents he was dating a white girl. “For me, it’s like, he dumped her daughter. And he dumped her in an unceremonious, dishonest way,” Hunter says. “He had not been straight with her about something that’s fundamental, elemental to who he is, which is his heritage, who his parents are. This guy was dishonest with his own family; that’s not a good start. It’s like, ‘Let’s not go there, let’s not do this with that guy.’”

‘Snowfall’ is fine, albeit formulaic There’s no room in the Golden Age of TV for more of the same.

Let’s face it: Audiences find it hard to resist a good prestige drama. Violence? Check. Drugs? Most likely. Heart-wrenching familial drama? You got it. And now here’s “Snowfall, an FX drama helmed by John Singleton, singlehandedly taking on the crack epidemic, told from the perspectives of a diverse bunch. How could it fail? Set in 1983 Los Angeles, the story centers on four major characters: Franklin (Damson Idris), a young black upstart seeking power, survival and success; Gustavo “El Oso Zapata (Sergio PerisMencheta), a Mexican wrestler in the middle of one crime family’s struggle for power; Teddy McDonald (Carter Hudson), a CIA operative with, of course, a dark past; and
Do you or anyone you know, have an illness or injury expected to last more than 6 months? Lucia Villanueva, the daughter of a Mexican crime lord, eager to find her place in the booming business of cocaine. There’s no denying the premise is ambitious. And yet it’s surprisingly dull. Blame it on the details, too many details: machinations of wars fought abroad, the Iran-Contra affair, a pantsless Israeli crime boss with improbable connections with
everyone, everything. It’s easy to get lost in the bits and pieces, and it’s a feat to keep up. “Snowfall also veers dangerously close to the improbable. It’s hard to believe that Franklin, a young man who starts the series chastising children for stealing ice cream, would take responsibility for bringing crack cocaine into his fragile neighborhood. Nothing in the first
couple of episodes hints at how Franklin could so easily go from good to bad. “Snowfall is as formulaic as they come, and audiences that enjoy that sort of thing may love it. But in this era of peak television, there’s not much room for a show that’s essentially more of the same. We’ve seen this story before — it’s time for something new.

PAFA uncovers the surrealist art of HonorĂŠ Sharrer Relationship Problems? We can help.

HonorĂŠ Sharrer is a name that not even those who frequent art museums may be familiar with. That wasn’t always the case, as new Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts director Brooke Davis Anderson points out. “Sharrer was an artist who early in her career received a lot of recognition,â€? Anderson said during a tour of the museum’s new show, “Subversion and Surrealism in the Art of HonorĂŠ Sharrer.â€? “She achieved some stardom in her early life,â€? Anderson continues, “which eventually, over time, receded from the public eye. When you go through this exhibition, I think you’re going to be asking yourself why.â€? Curator Jodi Throckmorton offers two possible explanations for Sharrer’s slide into obscurity. “For one, she was devoted to realism at a time when the United States was really championing abstract expressionism. The other

part is her leftist-leaning Communist politics. In a postwar, conservative America, that was an unpopular thing to do. Both of those elements are on abundant display throughout PAFA’s exhibition, which spans Sharrer’s long career with more than 40 paintings and almost 70 works on paper, along with photographs, studies and other ephemera that attest to the diligent
work and research that she put into each painting. Much of her work alternates between celebrations of working people and vicious sendups of the wealthy and powerful. Sharrer also possessed a wicked, subversive sense of humor, especially in the way that she plays with art history and mythology alongside the pop

The “gentlemen’s agreement that decreed that no building should rise above the brim of William Penn’s hat atop City Hall was broken in the late 1980s, paving the way for an array of unique skyscrapers. From the twin points of Liberty Place to the futuristic designs of the Comcast Center and the Cira Centre, the Philadelphia skyline gives everyone something to gaze at in wonder. While the Camden waterfront provides the most recognizable view of the skyline, there are several other places in and around the city offering all sorts of interesting

South Street Bridge The South Street Bridge is set far enough back from downtown that all of the skyscrapers are in perfect view. This vantage point allows you to view the skyline towering over the Schuylkill River. You can also get excellent views of the University City neighborhood, including the Cira Centre and FMC

Spring Garden Station Who would have thought that one of the best views of the city skyline could be seen from a stop on the Market-Frankford Line? With the platform positioned above the travel lanes of I-95, you can get a perfect view of the skyscrapers and
even frame them with the Northern Liberties neighborhood in the foreground. The station also provides an excellent view of the Ben Franklin Bridge as it spans the vast Delaware River into New Jersey.

of the skyline as it towers over the Schuylkill River. However, from this perspective, you can also manage to include one of the city’s most picturesque buildings, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, in your shot.
Belmont Plateau Wandering around Fairmount Park, it is easy to forget that you are in a
major city. The Belmont Plateau on the west side of the Schuylkill River provides a wonderful view of the entire skyline, framed perfectly by the calm grass and trees of the park.
Baltimore Pike Delaware County’s proximity to Philadelphia means there are several spots in its various suburban towns
with views of Center City. One of the best happens to be on Baltimore Pike in Springfield. As you move west toward Clifton Heights and, ultimately, West Philadelphia on the busy pike, pause for a moment near its intersection with West Avenue. Rising above the trees and buildings of western Delaware County is the skyline, visible due to the road’s hilly structure at this particular point.

Isn’t it lovely when something stands out for all the right reasons? The stately home at 3504 Hamilton St. isn’t what you would expect to find in Philly. Built in 1860, the six-bedroom home feels like a mini ranch house. The owners completely remodeled the house in 2008 with a mission of combining modern convenience and the house’s original historic beauty. The house, a well-preserved work of art in its own right, joins other landmark homes in the area. The neighborhood of Powelton Village was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Realtor Rodney Ross knows that it’s a very special house inside and out. “You just don’t see houses like this, Ross says. “It’s like it was lifted up from somewhere else and placed in Philly. The space in the house

g l a s s d o o r , visitors are immediately swept into a spacious foyer. The house has hardwood floors in most of the rooms, newly tiled bathrooms and a beautiful oak staircase illuminated by a large skylight. The home has many areas perfect for entertaining, whether it’s drinks and
snacks on the balcony or enjoying the sun coming through the kitchen windows. Ample closet space, a separate suite for visitors and original window shutters complete a list of features that makes the property stand out from the rest of its beautiful neighbors. “It feels like you’re living on the Main Line but you can walk almost everywhere you want, Ross says. “It’s so luxurious. In this case, luxury also includes antique lighting, gorgeous French door, ornate ironwork on the balconies, a huge and airy kitchen, and more. In addition, Ross knows it’s unusual for properties this large to remain as one full unit. The student population in the area creates demand for these grand houses to have multiple apartments. But this historic home calls for new owners who both admire the beautiful design and older features but want to live in the best that present day Philadelphia has to offer. Amazon Prime Day deals Everything you need to know about the third annual midsummer sale. KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn
kate.mooney@metro.us
Black Friday and Cyber Monday aren’t the only days-of-deals that should be on your radar. Amazon Prime’s third annual Prime Day begins Monday, July 10 at 9 p.m. and ends on Tuesday, 3 a.m., offering hundreds of thousands of deals across 12 countries. There’s just one catch: The 30 hours of discounts are available only to Prime members. If you’re not yet a member, starting a free
trial on Amazon.com on or before July 11 will still get you eligibility for Prime Day. (A note about Prime membership: It costs $99 a year, or $50 for students, and offers guaranteed two-day free shipping, plus unlimited streaming of film and TV on Amazon Video and access to over 1 million titles on Kindle. The two-day free shipping really makes it so much easier, and cheaper, to mail presents on time or order last-minute amenities. And it’s worth it for the TV access alone — Amazon original series like “Transparent, plus titles from HBO’s firstwave of programming, including “The Wire and “The Sopranos.)
How does Amazon Prime Day work? Any Prime members can get access to deals by visiting Amazon.com. Preliminary deals began Thursday, June 29, and will roll out daily through July 11. On Prime Day, the deals will be organized by the 20 top most popular categories, tailored to you based on your ordering history. Downloading the Amazon app will get you “deal watch, which includes previewing deals and getting notifications when deals go live — and with many limited-time “lightning deals offered as frequently as every five minutes, you’ll want to make sure you don’t

What kinds of deals can you expect this year? While Amazon has yet to announce the specific deals on Prime Day itself, it’s named two major categories of deals for this year: “Alexa exclusive discounts (for members with Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, Amazon Tap, compatible Fire TV or Fire tablet), and TV deals, featuring new brands such as the Amazon Fire TV Edition of the Element 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV. In the press release, Amazon notes that the TV deals are likely to sell out. Check Amazon.com daily through July 11 to see what’s new.

NESHEK’S ALL-STAR NOD A LOW POINT FOR PHILLIES THE SPORTS PROFESSOR
GLEN MACNOW
@RealGlenMacnow
Pat Neshek is not a Phillie. Oh, he wears red pinstripes and heads to the mound every few days to unfurl that herkyjerky, Frisbee-tossing delivery. But he’s no more invested in the club than the fan who shows up once a season on bobblehead giveaway night. Pat Neshek is not an All-Star. Yes, he’ll be in Miami next Tuesday. He may get a chance to confound an AL hitter or two. But in a game featuring headliners, Neshek will be the afterthought. The oddity. The player you really can’t tell without a program. Neshek will represent the Phils because of a silly rule requiring the All-Star Game to field a player from all 30 teams. That may be designed to keep interest alive in every fan base but, let’s be honest, it’s an insult to this oncegreat franchise. Or at least an embarrassment. Because Neshek,
The Phillies’ best performer over the first half of the regular season was Pat Neshek, according to Major League Baseball. GETTY IMAGES
whose career here spans all of 32.1 innings, now exposes everything wrong with the Phillies. Not that it’s his fault. One of the so-called foundation Phils should have made this All-Star Game. But, alas, every one of them – from Franco to Herrera to Eickhoff to Velasquez — has fallen through the
floor into baseball hell. Or, it should be one from the next generation making a splash. But they’re all stalled at Lehigh Valley. Need evidence that the Phils rebuild has withered? Twenty players named to this year’s All-Star Game are 25 years old or younger. Baseball is bursting
with youthful greatness. Meanwhile, our representative is a 36-yearold traveling salesman on his sixth stop, who came to Philly last winter as a salary dump. Neshek is actually the oldest player on the NL roster. That’s not his fault. This is nothing personal against Neshek.
Well, maybe some of it is. Several times recently, manager Pete Mackanin has heard his best reliever decline to pitch in a particular game, or opt to shut it down after an arduous five-pitch inning. It’s almost as if Neshek wants to save his best stuff for those lateseason pennant-race
games he’ll be throwing for someone a long way from here. And that’s the point. Everyone concedes that Neshek is a Phillie only until they can trade him for whatever Grade-B prospect shakes out. He’s a walking bargaining chip. A man with no nation. A breathing, side-arming testament to the failure that now stands for big-league baseball in Philadelphia. Neshek will be gone before the Eagles play their first preseason game in August. Hell, it’s not inconceivable he’ll be traded by next Tuesday and show up at the All-Star game like Jeff Samardzija in 2014, wearing a generic hat and jersey that look like they were just pulled off the shelf at Modell’s. It was a fluke when Dom Brown made the 2013 All-Star Game, but he was joined by the worthy Cliff Lee. This marks the franchise’s low point in the Midsummer Classic since Wayne Twitchell in 1973. And at least Twitchell spent five seasons with the Phils. Neshek won’t make it five months.
Can Sixers’ top rookie Fultz really do it all this season? In his NBA Summer League debut — and first-ever professional basketball game — Markelle Fultz gave Philadelphia fans sick of watching the floundering Phillies a taste of greatness. Yes, greatness in the summer league. That’s what the first overall pick put on display while collecting 17 points and three blocked shots (three blocks for a 6-foot-4 point guard, that could be fun). The hustle and then execution of the defensive plays Fultz made shone bright in a meaningless game in Utah earlier this week,
and the rookie out of Washington will stress the defensive side of things as he prepares to contribute to Brett Brown’s defense-first scheme. “I think it’s very valuable,” Fultz said. “You don’t see a lot of guards running after a big; everybody is trying to block the shot. So it’s going to throw people off and it’s going to make everybody think when they’re driving to the basket. So I think it’s very valuable.” However, slowing one’s role may be required, as 6-for-16 shooting did show a few mad shot-making decisions,
though 17 points in 22 minutes is impressive nonetheless. Sixers scouts, coaches and fans are all expecting a wide range of skills to be on display throughout the summer and into the much anticipated 2017-18 season from Fultz, who was a no-doubter as a No. 1 overall pick and seems to be even-keeled, even under the intense pressure he’ll experience in the fishbowl that is Philadelphia sports. “Offensively and defensively, he has the size to guard multiple positions,” Kevin Young, a Sixers assistant coach, said of Fultz. “He has

a versatile skill set in terms of his passing and his scoring. From a coach’s standpoint, it makes the game from a tactical standpoint fun, because you have a lot of guys that can do a lot of different things. “The thing that I
GETTY IMAGES
have been impressed with is he doesn’t get too high, he doesn’t get too low. Like I said, he’s pretty steady, which has been, I don’t know if surprising, but more comforting. Because you get thrown in this position of being the No. 1
pick, you have a lot of guys kind of all eyes on you and he has handled it great. He has been very coachable, very humble. He has asked all the coaches a lot of questions. He has been a joy to be around so far.” EVAN MACY

Weal says ‘it’s awesome’ to be a part of Flyers’ future after seeing what the 25-year-old did in a limited role. He tallied 12 points over a 19-game stretch and finished strong in his last seven contests, posting four goals with three assists. He also led all rookies with six goals in March. He, along with the rest of the Flyers, are hoping that high level of play to end the year carries over into his likely bigger role. “You take every game as it is,” Weal said. “That’s what I was trying to do last year ... you can’t really put too much expectation and hype into anything right off the bat, you have to take it as it is. There’s a lot of question marks surrounding the Flyers’ four lines and how they’ll unfold.
While most people were laying in their beds or just about to, Ron Hextall and the Flyers finalized an extension with Jordan Weal. The deal is for two years with a $1.75 annual cap hit. “It’s awesome,” Weal said. “They gave me a great chance last year to play with some great players and I think this is a great [team] that’s heading in the right direction. We have a lot of talent and skills, especially with some of the additions we’ve made. I’m just really excited to get back and start the year where we were finishing it.” After dealing Brayden Schenn at the NHL draft to St. Louis, the Flyers seemed to place more emphasis on bringing back Weal

Aries Home improvements can be made, as long as you have the required budget. Don’t go into debt trying to keep up with your social group. Self-improvement is favored.
Libra Take a serious look at your choices in order to discover a way to build greater prosperity by collaborating with someone who can provide any skill you are lacking.
Taurus Do something to boost your morale or update your appearance. Discuss personal matters with a loved one to find a way to improve your lifestyle and relationship.
Scorpio Be frank about things that have happened in the past that don’t sit well with you. The only way to bring about positive change is to address your concerns.
Gemini Express your feelings and find out where you stand. Romance will improve your life and give you the confidence to make changes to your living arrangements.
Sagittarius If you cannot bring yourself to be honest about your feelings, don’t say anything at all. Empty promises will lead to a bad reputation and will upset your plans.
Cancer Good fortune awaits if you are willing to do things a little differently. Don’t rule out partnering with someone who comes from a background quite unlike your own.
Capricorn Children, a friend or loved one will raise emotional questions. Listen to what’s being revealed, but don’t take what you hear as being the gospel truth.
Leo Take part in activities and events that are geared toward positive change, personal gains and physical improvements. Try to keep up with the latest trends.
Aquarius Your desire to be a humanitarian can lead to trouble. Find out if someone is playing you or has legitimate grievances before you offer them assistance or money.
Virgo Emotions will mess with your ability to get things done. Stay focused and do your best to resolve unfinished business so that you can move forward.
Pisces Emotional matters will escalate if you or someone you are dealing with uses manipulative tactics. Stick to the truth and be articulate about your objectives. EUGENIA LAST
