President Donald Trump will get a chance to patch up trans-Atlantic ties this week when he meets with NATO allies still rattled by his failure on an earlier trip to embrace the principle that an attack against one member is an attack against all. Trump arrived on Wednesday in Warsaw, Poland, where the White House said he would showcase his commitment to the North Atlantic Treaty Organiza-

tion in a speech and in meetings with a group of nations closest to Russia on his way to the G-20 summit in Germany on Friday and Saturday. “He will lay out a vision not only for America’s future relationship with Europe, but the future of our trans-Atlantic alliance, and what that means for American security and American prosperity,” Trump’s national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, told reporters last week.

The U.S. warned that it was ready to use force “if we must” to stop North Korea’s nuclear missile program but said it prefers global diplomatic action against Pyongyang for its test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said North Korea’s actions were “quickly closing off the possibility of a diplomatic solution” and the United States

was prepared to defend itself and its allies. “One of our capabilities lies with our considerable military forces. We will use them if we must, but we prefer not to have to go in that direction,” Haley told an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting. North Korea on Tuesday test-launched an ICBM, which some experts believe has the range to reach Alaska and the Pacific Northwest of the United States.

A total of 102 people were shot in Chicago over the Fourth of July weekend, leaving at least 14 dead, according to police and local media, as the city continues to grapple with gun crime. Police officials counted 71 shooting incidents and 14 murders between 6 p.m. on Friday and early Wednesday, according to data provided by police spokesman Frank Giancamilli on Wednesday. The Chicago Tribune newspaper

tallied the total number of victims shot in those incidents at 101 between Friday afternoon and early Wednesday. Police could not immediately provide the number of victims shot. Gangs were a major source of the violence, Chicago Police First Deputy Superintendent Kevin Navarro said at a news conference on Wednesday. Chicago police deployed 1,300 additional officers to patrol during the Fourth of July weekend.

MOST US VOTERS SUPPORT LIMITED TRAVEL BAN

5

Six in 10 American voters support the new ban on people from six predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States unless they can show they have a close relative here, according to opinion poll results released on Wednesday. The Politico-Morning Consult poll found 37 percent of voters said they “strongly supported” the new U.S. State Department guidelines that would deny visas to citizens of Iran, Libya, Syria,

Somalia, Sudan and Yemen who do not have close relatives in the United States. Another 23 percent of voters said they “somewhat support” the guidelines. The poll was conducted online on Thursday and Friday following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that partly upheld the ban, with 1,989 registered voters taking part. The poll results’ margin of error was 2 percentage points, meaning results could vary that much either way.

Urban Axes: Killing it in Philly Metro columnist tries out competitive axe-throwing in East Kensington. CASSIE HEPLER @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

“Let’s mix booze and sharp blades together!” Wise words from a group of Australians who started throwing axes in Canada 10 years ago and brought the popular sport to Philly, at a venue called Urban Axes. The building is a 6,000-square-foot East Kensington warehouse with beaters to Beamers parked outside. Sparse on the inside, there is raw wood everywhere and groups of people cheering and yelling like an Irish pub. Only once have they had an incident with someone getting too tipsy since they opened in September 2016, and they

just benched him. The key? Only wine and beer are allowed at this BYOB, with no hard liquor, and customers must be over 21. And since it is physically demanding, you’ll probably sweat it off anyway. To keep your booze cool, there are large fridges — like in your parents’ garage — which are also available for potlucks. If you’re picturing a lumberjack ax, you’re wrong. The complimentary axes thrown here are only a stone or less if you want to buy your own beloved blade and decorate it. Think of an oversized dart … that can cut your toes off, which is why they stress wearing closed-toe shoes, as they are surprisingly bouncy. After I signed my life away on an iPad with an inclusive photography disclaimer, we were off to our rarely private corner as the place was packed to the gills. Lily Cope, aka ax master general (not kidding,

Urban Axes offers customers a chance to perfect their ax-throwing skills. CASSIE HEPLER

that’s her title), showed me the ropes of how to hold the ax all the way toward the base with my right hand and wrap the left around so my thumbs make an “X.” Then step forward and aim the hilt of the ax toward the bullseye, which required one eye shut in my case (due to my glasses or maybe I always did that in darts,

too). Focus, then pull the ax backward over your head all the way, so your elbows are praising Jesus, and throw that sucker toward the target with precision, not power. Your hands should be straight back after you release, like an awkward penguin trying to fly. I missed. Then I missed again. And again. And

again. And then finally, somehow, after focusing with one eye shut, I nailed that sucker right in between the bottom middle circle and felt triumphant. It was a total fluke as the next throw was a flop as well, but I had hit the jackpot and wanted more. A girlfriend who is part of a league told me the key is drinking, but I stuck

to my iced mocha coffee with whipped cream. If we were in a match, the middle circle is five points, the second is three, the outer is one and the green dots overhead are seven each. Bringing out my competitive nature, I wanted to nail the bullseye, but our time was up already, and I left feeling slightly incomplete. I will be back … with a crew next time, and we will be the ones yelling, cheering and jeering. To celebrate their continued success of expanding to Baltimore, Cincinnati and Austin, Texas, Urban Axes is throwing a tournament of champions and summer skills in July, which will be judged by time, being ambidextrous and throwing with a partner, and will include beer sponsors and a food truck or two. It may just be for leagues, but you can watch and then get on the waitlist for next season.

Is health insurance a right? More than half of Americans think so, new report shows Sixty percent of Americans say it’s the government’s job to make sure people have healthcare. ERIN TIERNAN @ErinTiernan

erin.tiernan@metro.us

As Senate Republicans scramble to collect enough votes to replace Obamacare with their own healthcare bill, it seems the country is having a change of heart. The anti-Obamacare rhetoric that got a slew of Republican lawmakers — including President Donald Trump — elected is no longer as appealing to voters, as the GOP’s replacement plan would cut off millions from insurance and do away with popular Obamacare mandates like the one that bars insurers from denying people with pre-existing conditions. The highest number of Americans in over a decade — 60 percent — feel it’s the federal government’s responsibility to make sure all Americans have healthcare coverage, according to a national survey by Pew Research Center. But even more revealing are the numbers behind support for singlepayer health insurance. Thirty-three percent of Americans now support such a program in which the state, financed by taxes, covers basic healthcare costs for all residents regardless of income, occupation or health status — that’s up 5 percentage

points since January. Though the issue of government responsibility in ensuring health coverage is still a deeply divisive issue, the surveys show a growing number of Republicans are changing their views about what they think about the role of government in healthcare — especially among young Republicans. Thirty-nine percent of Republicans younger than 30 think government is responsible for providing health coverage for all, compared with 28 percent of Republicans older than 30. Twentytwo percent of younger Republicans favor singlepayer healthcare compared with just 10 percent of the older cohort. Democrats — especially liberal and younger Democrats — and young people are driving the push toward greater government involvement in healthcare. Among Democrats, 52 percent say health insurance should be provided through a single-payer system — up 9 percentage points since January. That figure jumps to 64 percent among liberal Democrats — up 13 percentage points since January. Overall, support for a single-payer health insurance system is much greater among younger adults than older people. Two-thirds of adults younger than 30 say the government has a responsibility to provide health coverage for all, with 45 percent saying coverage should be provided through a single national program.

Every Tuesday, a group of ladies gather for lunch at Kleinlife senior center in Northeast Philly. After getting properly fueled up, they form a knitting circle. And they knit their little hearts out — for pay and to help the less fortunate and disabled. “I learned I loved to crochet, and it gets me through the long nights,” said Katalin Willner, 83, a Holocaust survivor who now helps knit panels for Mim & Ray purses, a new luxury handbag line that donates proceeds to Kleinlife senior centers. “The profit they are paying us, and the rest goes to the senior center,” Willner said. “I’m happy I can make a few extra dollars, and I’m helping other people who really need it.” TobyStephen Designs approached the elderly women about knitting panels for their luxury purse line finished in fine Italian leather, dubbed Mim & Ray. The name Mim & Ray honors the memories of Miriam and Raymond Klein, who established KleinLife elderly recreation centers in 1975. Ranging from $300 to $3,000, the purses were on display and available for pre-order for fall at a recent Rittenhouse Hotel launch with some VIP senior knitters as the stars. “We did not get paid for the panels in the beginning,” said one of the VIPs, Mickie Levin, 85, of Philadelphia. “They told

us it was for the handbags, and there were four or five of us willing to do it. After about six or seven months, they began paying us.” In January 2016, Mim & Ray started out with six knitters. “Now we have 35,” said Toby Strogatz, the significant other of Stephen Klein, whose family began KleinLife. “When they first started, we were trying to figure out how to pay them and spoke to lawyers and had an accounting firm come and decide what was fair. We pay them by the inch — 25 cents an inch. Six or seven months ago, we began paying them, and before that, we were compensating them by gift cards, etc. We had to go through a process to make sure it’s fair for everyone, including a 10 percent licensing fee, and all proceeds go to Kleinlife,” she said. “Once a month, we get paid. … I think you can make from $200 to $400 a month,” said Levin. Willner, who was also at the launch, said productivity varies widely. “People do two to three pieces at a time, and I can do one and a half,” she said. “They said it doesn’t make a difference how many you make — not everyone is fast.” While the ladies got to model the handbags in photos for publicity purposes, none of the seniors currently have one. “We don’t even own a bag,” she said at the event. “I never asked for it, but they never offered me a bag.” Levin echoes her response. “I don’t think they are going to give us a $700 handbag, but I would love one. I think they are beautiful. They came out very nice, and I’m very pleased with the panels made,” said Levin.

A homeowner in South Philadelphia had a surprise visitor on the Fourth of July, when a Burmese python was discovered in a flower planter in front of the home. In a story of an animal perhaps seeking a little independence of its own on July 4, the 7-foot, 12-pound python was found in a flower planter near the intersection of 23rd and Tasker streets after a South Philly homeowner called police, according to Ame Dorminy, a spokeswoman for the Animal Care and Control Team in Philadelphia. “The homeowner knew enough to know that this wasn’t a natural species for the area,” said Dorminy during an interview on Wednesday. She said that animal control officers took the snake into ACCT’s shelter,

where it will be kept for the next day or so. Dorminy said that the snake is healthy and seems friendly — she believes that the python is someone’s lost pet. “He’s really friendly, and he’s in really good condition,” she said. “We believe he’s someone’s pet who got out.” It is not illegal to own a Burmese python in Philadelphia, Dorminy said, noting that the snake isn’t venomous or poisonous. While they hold the animal, Dorminy said, they have nicknamed the snake “Petunia.” If the owner doesn’t come forward in the next few days, she said, the python will be turned over to another authority, such as a nature preserve or special shelter for reptiles, because ACCT’s shelter isn’t really the best place to house the animal. These types of snakes can grow as large as 20 feet long and weigh 200 pounds. If you’ve lost a Burmese python in South Philadelphia, contact ACCT at 267-385-3800 or visit acctphilly.org to find out how to be reunited with your pet.

When President Donald Trump called MSNBC morning show host Mika Brzezinski “crazy” and said she was “bleeding badly from a face-lift,” it was a shocking attack on a journalist, though not an unsurprising one from a commander in chief who has become known for his brazen remarks on Twitter. Experts have equated Trump’s online behavior to cyberbullying — harm that is inflicted through technology and is done willfully and repeatedly. Clinical psychologist Dr. Joel Haber said in transforming the bully pulpit into plain old cy-

If there are men out there who believe in the same things [as Trump tweets] that behavior is less likely to be contained,” Haber said. “Let’s be real — once it’s out there without retractions or apologies, it’s

validated.” Haber said Trump’s refusal to take responsibility for his words further validates cyberbullying behavior. “If the president would take responsibility for his behaviors, then we’d have a point for discussion. If the president doesn’t do that, it’s basically saying that is appropriate behavior and opens the doors to reach a new level of ugliness,” Haber said. First lady Melania Trump has declared fighting cyberbullying as her personal mission while in the White House. “Our culture has gotten too mean and too rough,” the first lady said of online bullying when she announced her initiative in November. Apparently her husband didn’t get the message.

North Philly residents spotted the child-size coffin left on the sidewalk on July 3. CHRIS JAMES

Child’s casket, human organs found on North Philadelphia sidewalk Philadelphia police are investigating the discovery of a child-size casket — with a bag of human organs inside — on a North Philadelphia sidewalk earlier this week. According to police, on Monday at about 9:10 p.m., officers in the city’s 39th police district responded to

the 3000 block of West Clearfield Street to find “a small white casket on the sidewalk across from the Mount Vernon Cemetery.” Contacted Wednesday, a police representative said that the casket contained a bag of embalmed human internal organ tissue, though there were no skeletal

remains in the casket. The casket, police said, was taken to the city’s medical examiner’s office for further investigation. As of Wednesday morning, police had no further information on the identity of the individual who the organs may have belonged to. HAYDEN MITMAN

Former U.S. ambassador Mark Brzezinski has had his work deleted from the U.S. Embassy website, as retaliation for the Trump-â€?Morning Joeâ€? feud involving his sister, host Mika Brzezinski, the ambassador’s wife said. Last week, President Trump dialed up his feud with Brzezinski and cohost Joe Scarborough over what he considered overly critical coverage on the program. He tweeted a particularly harsh attack on Brzezinski, calling her “dumb as a box of rocksâ€? and “bleeding badly from a facelift,â€? which drew widespread partisan rebuke and consumed most of a news cycle. It was then that Natalia Brzezinski, wife of

Mark Brzezinski, the former U.S. ambassador to Sweden under President Barack Obama, noticed that the couple’s blog on the U.S. Embassy website had been removed. Natalia Brzezinski said she and the ambassador were approached about having a joint blog by then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and digital adviser Alec Ross. “We had a mandate to be a modern ambassadorial couple, she said. “We recorded all that we did on that U.S. Embassy blog, with a view to leaving the ideas, and the example of an activist embassy, for future generations. In the wake of the president’s sexist remarks, the ambassador’s wife was attempting to show her daughter the blog as an example of positive gender dynamics, she said, when she saw that the couple’s work was no longer online. “It’s such a sadness and a shame to see a president try to erase that authentic and hard work, she said. “It is so depressing to go back-

ward, it feels as if our hard work and the heart we put into it is erased.â€? “Ambassadorships are supposed to be nonpartisan and about American values, not about the values of any one party,â€? she said. “Erasing our digital footprint is a major assault on the freedom of expression and also the pure, nonpartisan nature of what diplomacy and ambassadorships are supposed to be about.â€? The White House has not commented. This may be the first digital deletion of the Trump administration to bear the hallmarks of a personal grudge, but it is only the latest in a series of erasures seemingly intended to send a message. Hours after Trump’s inauguration, the White House’s webpage on civil rights disappeared, along with pages on LGBT rights and disabilities. The website’s section on climate change has since been taken down. Metro Sweden’s Henrik Ek contributed to this report.

Congressman apologizes for filming inside Auschwitz gas chamber A U.S. congressman who was criticized for filming a video inside a former gas chamber at the Auschwitz death camp apologized and removed it from social media on Wednesday, saying he had intended it as a tribute to those killed at the Nazirun site. Representative Clay Higgins, a Louisiana Republican, had come under fire from the AuschwitzBirkenau Memorial and Museum in Poland for the five-minute video he filmed at the camp where more than a million people were murdered during World War II. Higgins said in a statement that he had taken down the video out of respect for those who felt it was wrong or caused pain. “My intent was to offer a reverent hom-

Ways ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ sticks the landing

The series’ second relaunch gets it right this time — for the most part.

Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” is a real charmer.

MATT PRIGGE

ALL PHOTOS SONY

It actually feels like classic “Spider-Man” By “classic,” we mean classic —like the old comics, before they turned heavy and dark, and the silly cartoon. The third Peter Parker in 15 years feels a lot like the Peter Parker created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko: a gee-whiz everyday kid beyond stoked he has superpowers. He’ll gain baggage later, learn that with great power comes great responsibility, yada yada. But when “Homecoming” opens, Holland’s Peter acts exactly like a boy who watches too many Marvel movies who’s just learned he’s going to fight alongside the real Avengers.

It’s funny, but not “Deadpool” funny “Spider-Man: Homecoming” won us over with some jokes about larb. Actually, it won us over well before that. Long before Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and the now much youthenized Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) started making goofy jokes over their Thai dinner — their leftfield culinary shout-out is even better than the shawarma ending of the first “Avengers” — it was obvious “Spider-Man: Homecoming” was a charmer. It was clear from the very start that this was quick on its feet, fun and funny, yet not smug and self-satisfied a la “Deadpool.”

It offers something new “Homecoming” is the first Marvel Cinematic Universe entry to give us a view from the ground, of people who live in a world with superheroes. In “Homecoming,” Iron Man, et al. are cherished just like they are here in the real world. Criminals wear Halloween store Avengers masks when sticking up banks. High school girls play F/M/K with their names. And the movie’s villain — a contractor played by Michael Keaton — becomes a bad guy because Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) screwed him out of a job to clean up the mess left after the first “Avengers.”

It plays with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in clever ways Of course, Peter already did fight alongside the real Avengers. The hilarious opening of “Homecoming” restages the royal rumble from “Captain America: Civil War” but entirely from smartphone footage an excitable Peter shot while he was filing his cameo/charming intro. Then he’s bummed that they don’t call him back for another round. Peter wants to be a star, but he’s not yet ready for prime time. That he’s gotten a taste makes it worse when he has to return to Queens, go back to being a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, bust the perps too small for the Avengers. Of course, he could always tell himself at least he’s not stuck in yet another origin story.

Now for the bad news “Homecoming” is such a blast it takes a long time to realize you might not care about anyone or anything that’s happening. It’s the opposite of the emo first Spidey reboot, starring a brooding Andrew Garfield. And yet there’s the rub: Maybe the opposite is not ideal, either. The downside to constant, very funny jokes is that it never slows down like the original Tobey Maguire ones did, never pauses for character beats that make us invested beyond being constantly entertained, as Sam Raimi made sure to do. You might not notice that absence right away, but you may notice it as “Homecoming” wears on. And though you may like Holland’s Spidey — and he is charming and lovable — you don’t really care for him either. But not so fast: Let’s not forget how strong “Spider-Man: Homecoming” started, how it gave us the finest and fleetest first act-and-change the current Marvel regime has yet produced. This is a summer blockbuster that finds room for larb jokes. Cherish that.

For the record, Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon have great relationships with their parents. The couple wrote the dramatic comedy “The Big Sick,” which is based on their lives — specifically on their courtship, when a nasty case of the flu plunger her into a monthlong coma. But their onscreen parents aren’t quite the same as the real deal. The movie version of Emily (played by Zoe Kazan) has parents (Holly Hunter and Ray Romano) who are easily flustered, often bickering. Nanjiani’s mother and father had a different response. “For them it was weird. They were like, ‘How is this going to be a comedy? Some really awful things happened to us, and you’re going to make fun of it?’ recalls Nanjiani. “I had to say, ‘We’re not making fun of it. We’re going to keep it real.’ The result is a Sundance hit that also winds up saying as much about parental relationships as it does about love. “Sometimes there are certain things you have to take out of your relationship with your parents, Nanjiani says. “With your parents, there are certain things you disagree on, and every time you go to them it’s going to be a s— show. It’s OK to be like, ‘We have a relationship, we love each other, but there’s this one thing we’re just not going to talk about.’

People can be awful In real life, Nanjiani is a proliďŹ c Twitterer, sometimes going after politicians who cross the line. Being on social media also means he sometimes attracts the worst of humanity, who pelt him with bigoted comments. “On Twitter, I hear that stu all the time,â€? Nanjiani explains. “It’s so strange: We’re at

this point where people feel OK saying, ‘I’m not for racemixing.’ People feel that’s a valid opinion to have, and you can just say it. The internet empowers people to say it in real life, too. There’s people in the House of Representatives that say that s—. How is it OK that this person feels OK saying this and they aren’t run out of town? Nanjiani has a theory about what drove people to become so insane: “How people would talk in real life used to be how they would talk

on the internet. They would be polite and normal. And slowly this anonymity thing happened, and they turned into trolls, became harsh to each other. The way we talk on the internet is now reecting back on us. There are so many people who talk more on the internet than they do in real life. That becomes their primary way of engaging with people. Then it aects how you are in real life.

Andy Samberg can’t wait for ‘Game of Thrones’ either enhancing drugs, what was it like getting Lance Armstrong on to make fun of himself? It wasn’t that difficult. [Laughs] Murray wrote the idea for him into the script because we were making a comedy about cycling and he’s still the face of cycling. So we were like, “We can’t really do a comedy about cycling without even asking him.”

We chatted with the “SNL” alum about his new mockumentary, “Tour de Pharmacy.” RACHAEL VAUGHAN CLEMMONS @rachaelclemz

rachael.clemmons@metro.us

Why did Andy Samberg pick the competitive world of cycling for his latest mockumentary? “[Just] the look of it made us giggle,” says the 38-year-old over the phone. “A lot of grown men in spandex.” With even a passing familiarity with Andy Samberg’s work, you’ll know exactly what to expect from “Tour de Pharmacy,” a fictitious look at doping in competitive cycling circa 1982. It’s also flush with over-the-top performances from the likes of Samberg himself, Orlando Bloom, John Cena, Daveed Diggs and more. We talked to the very chill “Brooklyn NineNine” star — who was preparing to binge drink

Bud Light for Independence Day — about choosing competitive cycling over curling, Orlando Bloom’s chiseled bod and, of course, “Game of Thrones” mania. How soon after “7 Days in Hell” did you and writer Murray Miller decide to do another of these mockumentaries? Pretty immediately. It dawned on us that if “7 Days in Hell” went well, we could do more of

them. It did well enough! [Laughs] [Afterward] we just started brainstorming different sports that we had a take on and cycling was one of them. What made you choose cycling over something overtly silly, like curling? Curling has come up! But cycling felt right. There is obviously a lot of stuff about PEDs [performance enhancing drugs] and all that, which we thought

would be fun source material for comedy. Speaking of performance

Orlando Bloom’s character, Juju Pepe, is such a specific caricature, especially with that peroxide blond goatee. Murray created Juju Pepe solely from his mind. His character is an amalgamation of a lot of cyclists and stuff we thought was funny. The blond goatee, I don’t remember whose idea

it was, I just remember us giggling indefinitely. Orlando kind of makes everything look good because he’s in incredible shape and cut from marble. [Laughs.] You and Murray have done well having these Brits that people don’t really think of as funny — first Kit Harington in “7 Days in Hell,” now Orlando Bloom in “Tour de Pharmacy.” It’s a dice roll for them and for us. But with Kit, I’m obsessed with “Game of Thrones.” He told me he used to do sketch and improv in college. And sure enough he was so good at it. To the point where everyone was like, “Holy s—, Kit Harington is funny!” How are you feeling about this upcoming season of “Thrones”? It’s coming back so soon. Ruth contemplates being the worst.

Ruth and Debbie shine — each in their own way — in the season finale. ALL PHOTOS ERICA PARISE/NETFLIX

Here are the biggest questions we have after the finale. GLEANA ALBRITTON @MsGlea letters@metro.us

“GLOW” closed out its first season with a few shocking twists. First, Ruth (Alison Brie) steps up and takes the lead. And who could have predicted that Debbie’s Liberty Bell (Betty Gilpin) would be thwarted from taking the crown? By Tamme’s Welfare Queen (Kia Stevens), no less?

With the first series done, and the champions crowned, here are all the burning questions we have for the second season of “GLOW.” Will Ruth ever stop being the worst? Ruth knowingly slept with her married friend’s husband — twice! The worst. But what of the abortion? Ruth opted for the procedure because she’s desperate to become a star. But she also clearly wants to be friends with Debbie again — so the chances of her bringing

What will a second season of ‘GLOW’ bring? up that surprise pregnancy are pretty low, right? Will Debbie leave her philandering husband once and for all? Mark (Rich Sommer) is a condescending, cheating louse who sees Debbie as the perfect trophy wife. And he constantly tries to isolate her from a career and friends that would give her a sense of independence. Debbie, you in danger, girl! Sebastian clearly has a soft spot for Carmen. Now what? Throughout the series,

Bash (Chris Lowell) is surprisingly attentive to Carmen (Brittney Young). And in the finale, he again comes to Carmen’s aid with some quippy commentary, right when she starts to panic during her bout against Welfare Queen. Sebastian and Carmen have a kinship based on feeling like they are disappointments to their families. Is it too much to hope this blossoms into a full-blown romance in Season 2? Will Cherry take the cop show and leave her cast-

mates in the dust? Cherry (Sydelle Noel) has wanted to be a star for a long time and the cop show she auditions for — “‘Cagney & Lacey’ with a black girl and a Jew” — could be her big moment. But will she be able to choose between that and “GLOW”? Pilots can be a crap shoot, so maybe its best for her to stick with the “GLOW” squad. At least for now. How much longer will the stereotypes go for? Both Bash and Sam encourage the women to play with irresponsible

stereotypes. Indian-American Arthie (Sunita Mani) suffers harassment in the ring as Lebanese terrorist Beirut; Tamme tries to explain to Sam that the persona of Welfare Queen as a black woman is damaging; and Jenny (Ellen Wong), perky Cambodian birthday party planner, reluctantly takes on the mildly offensive Fortune Cookie. Because this is the ’80s, these stereotypes will likely go on for as long as the show runs. But here’s hoping “GLOW” will find ways to skewer and subvert them in its second season.

20 THINGS TO DO

Art in transition in Old City Snyderman-Works Galleries closes after 52 years — now what? A.D. AMOROSI @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

“All art is transitional, all art is permanent, that’s been its nature since the start of time, says Rick Snyderman, the godfather of Philadelphia’s art gallery scene who, with wife Ruth, famously created resurgence in the crafts movement in the late ’80s, and helped turn Old City into a destination in the 1990s. Now, 52 years after their start in running selfnamed galleries, the couple announced that they sold the building housing Snyderman-Works Galleries and will depart in September (they head to Maine for the summer). As sad as Snyderman’s closing was, another announcement rocked

Philly’s art world when the nearly 30-year-old Vox Populi gallery collective on North 11th Street had a fire in a public access stairwell. The Vox building is now closed, displacing its artists for an undetermined amount of time and forcing tenants to find new studios. For those who chickenlittle Philadelphia’s arts scene, the immediate outlook was grim, especially in Old City where grumbles of lost revenue and attentions given to new galleries in Kensington and Fishtown are as prevalent during First Fridays as cheddar and wine. “Ruth and Rick remade the crafts scene and stayed influential, says local sculptor/Realtor Tom Mills. “But it’s no shock to hear they’re closing — just surprising they actually did it now. Running galleries is a tough business. Muralist and comic artist Raphael Tiberino, one of the operators of Tiberi-

We have a great new population of artists and buyers who have come from New York City. Now they can afford to live and buy since NYC was so expensive. If they can’t buy from Snyderman or Vox Populi, they’ll go elsewhere. Vox Populi’s executive director made it clear that neither he nor the collective he oversees owns the property whose compliance and communication with L&I and their landlord is positive and clear. “Safety for our artists and our audiences is a foremost concern and we anticipate holding our juried July show with little disruption to our originally planned calendar, says Thomas pointing to July 14 through August 20’s temporary location — 990 Spring Garden St. “Vox Populi is committed to maintaining its programming, and is reviewing a number of spaces in the city in the short

How many times has Donald Trump done it? The Snydermans aren’t ceasing operations as a gallery due to any economic head-or-heartache (they’re currently doing major consulting work for Two Liberty Place and Bridge on Race), or the Amazon-ing of gallery culture (“you can’t buy art online, at least, I wouldn’t want to own any of it), but decided to move into other directions by choice. “At the age of 80, we felt we should use our knowledge, smarts and resources in other ways. It’s physical being on your feet, schlepping boxes, whether it’s in the gallery or fairs such as Art Basel in Miami. Now, the Snydermans will become a small, intelligent mobile resource rather than a physical gallery and will be busy putting together the stories of their lives together into a book.

22 THINGS TO DO

Shakespeare + Beer = ShakesBEER Head to Pretzel Park on Saturday for an arrant good time.

If you go “ShakesBEER: Twelfth Night” at Pretzel Park Saturday, July 8, 6 p.m. 4300 Silverwood St. manayunktheatreco.org Free

MADELINE PRESLAND @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

If you think of a Shakespeare play as being a very stiff and formal event (complete with that signature Tudor ruff ), think again. The Manayunk Theatre Company is trying to bring Shakespeare back to his roots, but with a twist. ShakesBEER attendees can jeer, throw things in jest and drink. In fact, even the actors are drinking. What started out as a ticketed bar show is now a free BYOB event at Pretzel Park in Manayunk. Artistic Director Sean Connolly and the rest of the crew at the theater company thought an adaptation of “Twelfth Night” would be the perfect play for a summer evening.

The Manayunk Theatre Company performs “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” last year. PROVIDED

“You can just drink a bottle of wine and watch the show,” Connolly says. “It’s fun and family friendly.” The play itself is a tale of love, loss, intrigue and adventure. Although it is entertaining, it can be difficult to follow even when there isn’t any alcohol in involved. The actors will pause

several times throughout the show to make sure people are up to speed on the plot and do some translating. These pauses and adapting the script is an important part of ShakesBEER performances. “It makes Shakespeare plays so much more accessible and fun,” says show direc-

tor Leigh Bicica. “And it makes people go ‘Oh yeah, he’s still relevant.’” In addition to translating, adapting the script also includes throwing in some more modern references. After all, Shakespearean performances were known for shining lights on political events and social culture in their heyday.

“We try and make Shakespeare as up to date as possible,” says Connolly. “There are lots of references to cell phones and things like that. And lots of gender bending.” If including political talk sounds a little dry, fear not: There will also be drinking games throughout the

show. Some will be for the actors performing onstage. Others will involve the audience, so make sure you bring your favorite craft beer or bottle of wine to partake. “It could easily turn into a mess with the actors drinking,” acknowledges Bicica. “But you have to find ways to get the point across and follow the plot. It’s a challenge.” The theater troupe hopes to expand their outreach through grant funding and host more shows in Pretzel Park next year.

He all but invented the throwback jersey in his time as marketing director and part-owner of Mitchell & Ness. He’s fashioned a high-end T-shirt line, LipHeele, with his photos as the centerpiece, and he’s got his Baby Mama hot sauce that’s a sweet, spicy treat. Which leads us to his immensely popular fried chicken. “I do pop-ups and collaborate with whomever I like, says Harley about his first true love, a passion he learned from his

grandmother in Union, South Carolina, who used to fry up chicken in an iron skillet. “I remembered that taste my whole life. There’s nothing [the recipe] written down. he says. On the night we speak, he’s bringing his fried chicken and cheesy grits to Moonshine. On Saturday and Sunday evenings, he’s at Toast in Midtown Village, doing his chicken and waffles with a serving of some Baby Mama sauce on the side. What’s his calling card when it comes to doing fried chicken right? “Black folk style, he says with a hearty laugh.

“I brine it for a week in my secret spices and let that marinate with the very best ingredients you can buy, like halal chicken from Cannulli’s in the Italian Market and King Arthur’s unbleached flour. Then there’s my Baby Mama Sauce — the best you ever had. Food-famous first for his catering largesse in barbershops and basketball games in the late ’90s and his turkey lasagna pop-ups of 2011 (“I made Time magazine), Harley wanted to show millennials his full repertoire of culinary skills. Nothing ancient about Athens We’ve got eight ways to experience the modern Greek city.

saffron rice — which means you won’t get stuck with typical tofu or veggie burgers. Don’t miss the signature appetizer of creamy avocado hummus with homemade pita.

Borsalino Bar

Six d.o.g.s.

Occupying a prime corner in the bustling central Monastiraki district, Borsalino Bar offers an intriguing, upscale craft cocktail menu in a swanky, blue-hued setting. Bartenders decked out in smart vests and ties whip up seasonal specialties like the Smoke and Mirrors, a sweet-and-spicy blend of mezcal, masticha (a liqueur from the isle of Chios), local red Florina pepper, smoked maple syrup and grapefruit. Inside, it’s all plush velvet and cool jazz, while the terrace, with black-andwhite striped awning, buzzes on warm evenings.

The massive music/exhibition space/bar Six d.o.g.s is a magnet for the cool kids of Athens. During the day it hums with digital nomads sipping coffee and working on laptops, and by night it morphs into a performance space where you can catch local bands or dance to DJs spinning underground techno. The highlight is the alfresco garden bar, which serves draft beer, wine and truly excellent cocktails. Try the fun, fruity tropical libations from the retro Hawaiian-themed drinks menu made with flower syrups and exotic fruits.

where you can feast on dishes like sea bass with beluga lentils, fennel cream and truffle with an unobstructed view of the Parthenon beyond.

The Underdog This cafe brews some of Athens’ best java, roasting fair-trade beans on-site. The chic, white-brickwalled multilevel space offers plenty of seating; there’s also a large, bright, glass-enclosed courtyard with lots of light. Brunch is popular here (try the pancakes) and is served every day, not just on weekends. The Underdog also offers a vast selection of beer.

Al Hammam Baths Nestled at the top of a hilly street in Athens’ most ancient neighborhood, Al Hammam Baths feels like it’s been around for centuries, yet it only opened last year. In the lower-level hammam, you can get a traditional scrub and soap treatment in a spacious white marble steam room, while on the upper floor, facials, Thai and Shiatsu massage, and

detoxing body wraps are offered. An entire area is devoted to nails (including shellac manis/pedis), but unlike a typical nail salon, this one boasts fantastic views of the Acropolis through its windows.

Laughton, Vecchione appear to be a brewing battle for Flyers spot Which winger can earn a regular spot on one of the Flyers’ top four lines? KYLE PHILLIPPI @MetroPhilly sports@metro.us

Two things happened over the past few weeks … well, actually a bunch has happened to create this logjam at forward, such as the selection of Nolan Patrick, the rise of Oskar Lindblom, the re-signing of Jordan Weal and the acquisition of Jori Lehtera via the Brayden Schenn trade. Nonetheless, two things in particular have created what looks to be the battle to watch come training camp: the decision by Ron Hextall to include Scott Laughton

on the protection list for the expansion draft and the re-signing of Mike Vecchione. Both moves show the team’s faith in the two youngsters. The problem, though, is right now, they may be fighting for one spot. “That’s going to have to play out,” Hextall said on his conference call on Sunday, later adding that, “I can’t predict what’s going to happen here.” Based off of the general manager’s comments, it appears Laughton’s strong performance with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms really struck a chord with the organization. The 20th overall selection in the 2012 draft posted 39 points in 60 games last season. “Scotty had a terrific year,” Hextall said. “He improved a lot, I think his focus and profession-

alism; quite honestly. I think Scotty really grew up last year so Scotty certainly will be given an opportunity to make the club along with Michael.” Both Laughton and Vecchione, who inked a two-year deal over the weekend as a restricted free agent, appeared in two games with the Flyers last season. Neither player recorded a point in their brief appearances. Vecchione joined the team late last season after signing a contract out of Union College. Though limited, he did have some success at winning draws with a 66.7 percent success rate, having gone 5-2 in faceoffs in his debut. “They liked what they saw,” Vecchione said over the phone in regards to how his exit interview went. “It was a small sample size, but they felt

Can Mike Vecchione play his way into a role with the Flyers?.

I could win faceoffs, that I’m a two-way guy and can move my feet with those guys. I felt I belong.” It’s probably a bit premature to make any predictions, like Hextall said, but a few factors probably swing the pendulum in favor of Laughton. The first is that he would have to clear waivers, meaning another club could claim him if the Flyers did decide to send him

down to the AHL. Vecchione, though, can be sent down without needing to go through waivers. The second is that, quite honestly, the organization has to find out what Laughton is as a player. He has seen 109 games at the NHL level but has just 27 points to show for it. His longest stretch in the league came in 2015-16, playing in 71 games with 21

points recorded. If what Hextall said is true, that Laughton finally turned the corner last season in terms of maturation, then perhaps he’s ready to take that next step and be a consistent bottom six player. “If a veteran comes in and he’s not ready to go, if he’s not hungry, if he’s not in shape, then there’s no guarantees,” Hextall said.

Flyers mail bag: What about Stolarz? Metro answers readers’ burning questions about the Flyers as free agency continues. KYLE PHILLIPPI @MetroPhilly sports@metro.us

Does Travis Sanheim or Phil Myers make the main roster over Andrew MacDonald? (@DanTheFlyeraFan) At this moment, I think the two youngsters who make the team on the blue line are Sam Morin and Robert Hagg. Those two, along with Ivan Provorov and Shayne Gostisbehere, will be a part of this team for a very long time. Radko Gudas, too, will have a home here for a few more years. That leaves Brandon Manning and MacDonald with one starting spot open. I believe MacDonald gets the nod again, most likely alongside Provorov, leaving the Phantoms with a rather stacked defensive group. There’s no issue in letting Sanheim develop for another season at the AHL level until he is ready. Morin and Hagg spent five years combined with the Phantoms, so judging on history, Ron Hextall has no problem with patience in his defensemen. When Neuvirth (no doubt) gets hurt, do you think the Flyers should give Anthony Stolarz a real chance? I do. (@ natethedadd27) If an injury does strike be-

tween Neuvirth or Brian Elliott, of course Stolarz will get the call-up. Now, will he play substantial minutes? I think it would take a more serious injury for him to surpass one of the two vets. Let’s say Neuvirth does miss some time, I’d expect Dave Hakstol to ride Elliott, who has shown in the past that he can heat up in similar situations. It seems like Stolarz keeps getting the short end of the stick. Only making it more difficult for him, too, is Alex Lyon, who Hextall mentioned in his conference call on Sunday, saying not to forget about him, either. Does Oskar Lindblom make the team and if so where does he slide in? (@lucas_1491) There’s a ton of forwards who will be jostling for position this training camp. That said, I think Lindblom has as strong of a chance as anyone. It’s going to be hard to pass on a kid who played so well for Brynas IF (47 points in 52 games) in the SHL. I could foresee him getting second line minutes alongside Sean Couturier and Wayne Simmonds. If Nolan Patrick truly does flash, a Lindblom-Patrick-Simmonds line would surely be a fan favorite. We have too many centers, what do we do with them? (@the_rice_kid) Right now, Claude Giroux is your first line pivot. Sean Couturier and Nolan

Patrick will go somewhere on lines two and three. There’s also Valterri Filppula, Jori Lehtera, Scott Laughton and Mike Vecchione. Filppula is certainly a lock for the lineup, but he can also play the wing. The same goes for Lehtera. I think the real battle is with Vecchione and Laughton for a roster spot. It’s really hard to predict how that shakes out now, but I think Filppula going on the wing is likely, Lehtera mans the fourth line center role and Laughton beats out Vecchione for a spot. This truly can go either way, though, and I’ll likely change my mind as soon as camp begins. Where does Wade Allison ďŹ t in the near future? (@slakhawk27) As soon as he was taken in the 2016 NHL Draft, there were skeptics doubting his potential. I think his first year at Western Michigan was a good step in the right direction. He finished with 29 points in 36 games last season. He’s still young and a few years from turning pro, which makes his trajectory tough to project, but there’s a belief he could develop into a top six forward, which would be a huge pull for someone who was the 52nd pick. He’ll need to prove himself once again this season in the NCAA, but if he maintains a fairly close point-pergame status, you’ll start to hear about him a lot more among the Flyers fan base.

Markelle Fultz scored 17 points in his NBA Summer League debut back on Monday. GETTY IMAGES

76ers Summer League Guide The process has meandered into the summer as draft picks and roster hopefuls try to impress the Sixers’ management. KYLE PHILLIPPI @MetroPhilly sports@metro.us

Center: Kaleb Tarczewski (Arizona)

The schedule The past few years have seen quite a bit of excitement surrounding the Summer League as the Sixers have continually trotted out high-end draft picks, but the hype has never been as high as it has been this year. That’s because the team will showcase the No. 1 overall pick and the man who appears to have completed the puzzle that is The Process: Markelle Fultz. What else should fans be watching for when the Sixers continue their Summer League slate with their second game Thursday at 9 p.m.?

The roster

Guards: Brandon Austin (Oregon), James Blackmon Jr. (Indiana), Isaiah Briscoe (Kentucky), Markelle Fultz (Washington), Aaron Harrison (Kentucky), Melo Trimble (Maryland) Forwards: Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot (Sixers), Jonah Bolden (UCLA), Larry Drew II (North Carolina), Isaiah Miles (St. Joe’s), Darryl Reynolds (Villanova), Alex Poythress (Sixers), Charles Jackson (Tennessee Tech)

Utah Summer League July 3: Celtics 89, Sixers 88 July 5, 9 p.m.: Utah Jazz July 6, 7 p.m.: San Antonio Spurs Samsung Summer League in Las Vegas July 8, 10:30 p.m.: Golden State Warriors July 9, 10:30 p.m.: San Antonio Spurs July 11, 6:30 p.m.: Boston Celtics

Draft picks in action In addition to Fultz, the team’s second-round pick, Jonah Bolden, also will be suiting up. Bolden hails from Australia, having played at UCLA before the Sixers chose him at No. 36. He averaged 12.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per game last season. The 6’10” big has hopes of earning a spot behind Joel Embiid alongside Richaun Holmes. A strong showing in the summer league would increase his odds of making the NBA out of the gate rather than the development league.

Workout warriors Before the NBA Draft,

the Sixers conducted a handful of group workouts consisting mainly of second round talent and guys likely to go undrafted. It’s worth noting that the team must’ve liked what saw from a handful of those guys as four of them will be dressing in Summer League: James Blackmon Jr. (Indiana), Isaiah Briscoe (Kentucky), Darryl Reynolds (Villanova) and Melo Trimble (Maryland). The Sixers have brought on Summer League invites in the past, so a good performance from either of these guys could result in a spot on the bench.

Brandon Austin Off the court, Austin’s image is far from squeaky clean. He has dealt with two separate sexual assault accusations with none of them resulting in charges filed. That being said, he has faced the scrutiny that comes with accusations, having been dropped from two different colleges. The Imhotep alum is looking to get back on track, potentially securing a spot in the G-League with a good showing in the Summer League.

Aries Put a little tender, loving care into your surroundings. If your space is set up to promote greater efficiency, you will excel, both at work and at home.

Libra Taking a day trip or making a physical change that will improve your attitude should be on your agenda. Refuse to let anyone push you.

Taurus Be aware of every aspect of a situation before you jump to conclusions or make a snap decision that could get you into an unwanted predicament.

Scorpio If someone is putting demands on you, speak up and make it clear what you are — and are not — willing to do. If you let problems linger, the situation will escalate.

Gemini A relationship will become problematic if you don’t feel the same way about someone as he or she feels about you. Discuss intentions before you get too involved.

Sagittarius Take on a physical challenge that will exhilarate you and inspire you to do more and explore options that you would never have considered in the past.

Cancer Don’t let changes that someone else makes interfere with your plans. Stick to your guns by being true to yourself in order to avoid disappointment.

Capricorn If you want to make a change to your personal papers or lifestyle, do so in private. The less anyone else knows about your business, the better.

Leo The younger and older people in your life will have an influence on the way you move forward. Innocent comments will make you think and react more wisely.

Aquarius You can change someone’s life if you offer sound advice. Attending a reunion or reconnecting with someone from your past will be constructive.

Virgo Don’t run away from a pending emotional problem. Face controversy head-on and put an end to any misunderstanding that may be causing trouble. Be honest.

Pisces Concentrate on what you must achieve to maintain the status quo and enhance your chance to get ahead. Listen and take care of business first. EUGENIA LAST
