MCCAIN SAYS GOP HEALTH- IRAQI ARMED FORCES CARE BILL LIKELY DEAD VICTORIOUS IN MOSUL
1
A senior U.S. Republican senator predicted on Sunday that the Republican bill to roll back Obamacare would likely fail, adding to growing signs that the bill is in trouble. “My view is that it’s probably going to be dead,” Sen. John McCain, a senior U.S. Republican, said on the CBS program, “Face the Nation.” The Senate bill, which faces unified Democratic opposition, has been further
imperiled during a week-long recess where several Republican senators have had to return to their states and face constituents strongly opposed to the bill. Senators return to Washington on Monday. The Senate bill keeps much of Obamacare intact but strips away most of its funding.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi arrived in Mosul on Sunday and congratulated the armed forces for their “victory” over Islamic State after nearly nine months of urban warfare, bringing an end to jihadist rule in the city. Islamic State’s defeat in Mosul three years after taking the city is a major blow for the hardline Sunni Islamist group, which is also losing ground in its operational base in the Syrian
city of Raqqa from where it has planned global attacks. The group, however, still controls territory in Iraq and is expected to revert to more conventional insurgent tactics such as bombings as its self-proclaimed caliphate falls apart. The battle for Mosul — by far the largest city to fall under the militants’ control — has left large areas in ruins, killed thousands of civilians and displaced nearly one million people.

CEASEFIRE DEAL HOLDING IN SOUTHWEST SYRIA
5
A U.S.-Russian brokered ceasefire for southwest Syria was holding more than nine hours after it took effect, a monitor and rebels said, in the latest international attempt at peace-making in the six-year war. The United States, Russia and Jordan reached the ceasefire and “de-escalation agreement” this week with the aim of paving the way for a broader, more robust truce. The announcement came after a meeting between U.S.
President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G-20 summit of major economies in Germany. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitoring group, said “calm was prevailing” with no air strikes or clashes in the southwest since the truce began at noon on Sunday. “The situation is relatively calm,” said Suhaib al-Ruhail, a spokesman for the Alwiyat al-Furqan rebel faction in the Quneitra area.

A fire at a receiving station in Los Angeles left 140,000 residents without power on Saturday after a second straight day marked by temperatures that exceeded 90 degrees, power authorities said. Crews were on site assisting fire department operations and assessing damage at the scene of the fire at Receiving Station J, in the North San Fernando Valley, the Los Angeles Department of Water and
Power said in a statement. Some 140,000 residential and commercial customers were left without power which was cut off at the station to allow crews to work on putting the fire out, the department said. Thee was no word on when power might be restored, which would occur once the fire is out and the system is stabilized, said LADWP, which provides power to 1.6 million customers in the city of Los Angeles.

Boston has been planning ahead, and if you’re one of the nearly 15,000 residents who added their voice and ideas to Imagine Boston 2030, you know how encompassing all that forethought has been. After two years of work, the city is ready to unveil the final version of the first citywide plan in 50 years. Mayor Marty Walsh will join other city officials and community organizations to release the plan at an interactive showcase on Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. at 555 Columbia Rd. in Uphams Corner. “With the help of all the residents who offered their feedback, Imagine Boston sets a course for the future, guides our growth and builds on our existing strengths, Walsh said in an email. “I invite residents from all corners of our City to join us on Tuesday as we celebrate
this important milestone in our City’s history. Natalia Urtubey, director of engagement for Imagine Boston 2030, explained that this final draft builds on previous versions residents may be familiar with, and ties together all the aspects needed for such an effort. “This final draft is really the culmination of everything, including how are going to be held accountable, how to measure success and how to move toward implementation, she said. Tuesday’s event is intended to be a “celebration of all that work. Tied up in Imagine Boston 2030 are other more specific city efforts, like Go Boston 2030, Climate Ready Boston, Boston Creates and the Boston Resiliency Plan, all of which will be showcased at the event. The event will be both indoors and outdoors, with the inside portion serving as an “interactive display of Imagine Boston 2030 and the other planning efforts. Here, residents have yet another opportunity to leave a testimony about the experience. The true celebration will be outdoors and include local musicians, food trucks, a beer garden hosted by Upham’s Corner Main Street and
Dorchester Brewing, local vendors, the Imagination Playground and more. “The event itself is really a way to activate the entire Upham’s Corner neighborhood, Urtubey said. “To invite folks who’ve maybe never been there and folks from there to get to know neighborhood in a different way. The revitalization of Upham’s Corner is a central part of the Imagine Boston 2030 plan, and also an area that encompasses many of the separate elements of the plan — from neighborhood enhancement to increasing open space to thinking about providing better access to Boston’s waterfront. Hosting the event there is a way to also showcase those bullet points of the plan, Urtubey said. “All of the different major pieces of this document really intersect in some way with Upham’s Corner, she said. “Uphams Corner as a pilot model really [shows] what the rest of the city will look like in the future. It’s showcasing how the document comes to life. Imagine Boston 2030 Citywide Plan Launch, Tuesday, July 11 (Rain date July 18) from 3 to 8 p.m., 555 Columbia Road, Uphams Corner, 02125.

TRUMP’S AMERICA
THE TWITTER EQUIVALENT OF A SHRUG OPINION
ELLIS HENICAN
@henican
Why stop with Vladimir Putin’s election hack? Aren’t there any other messes Donald Trump can “move forward” from? You bet there are. He can “move forward” from the nukes in North Korea, “move forward” from the complexities of healthcare and, while he’s at it, “move forward” from the decline in America’s longstanding role as leader of the world. Amid all the headshaking in Hamburg, some of the newly emboldened Euros really were calling the G-20 summit “the G-19.” There’s only one problem with all this “moving forward.” It doesn’t actually solve anything. “Moving forward,” the Trump version, is really just another way of saying, “Aw, forget about it.” “I strongly pressed President Putin twice about Russian meddling in our election,” the president typed on Sunday in the Twitter equivalent of a shrug. “He vehemently denied it. I’ve already given my opinion.” So there. “Now it is time to move forward in working constructively with Russia!” Instead of finding out exactly how Putin’s people worked to steal last year’s U.S. election,
instead of discovering exactly how deeply the Trump campaign was involved, Trump now wants to set up a U.S.Russian “cybersecurity unit” so the two powers can work together. Back home in America, that went over about as well as you might expect on both sides of the aisle. “It’s not the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard, but it’s pretty close,” said Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham. “This is like the guy who robbed your house proposing a working group on burglary,” former Obama Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on CNN. “It is they who did this.” Oh, that. Speaking of CNN, Donald Trump Jr. has now joined his father’s juvenile attacks on the “fake news” media. Exactly a week after Senior tweeted out a clip of him clotheslining a CNNheaded Vince McMahon, Junior spread a doctored video of Tom Cruise’s “Top Gun.” Only this time, the third-grader-inchief is Maverick and the Soviet “bogey” is plastered with the CNN logo. Let’s all try to ignore the irony of replacing America’s real enemy with a media brand. Maybe we can just “move forward” from these childish video pranks. What’s next? Booger jokes? theories 4Fan-favorite for season seven TELEVISION
Spoiler alert! The seventh season of “Game of Thrones” — everyone’s favorite fantasy drama series — is set to premiere on July 16 on HBO. In preparation for the most epic season yet, Metro investigates what to look forward to and what theories could come to pass. It’s the best way to bide your time until Sunday.
DANIEL CASILLAS MWN letters@metro.us
1. Tyrion is a Targaryen
We’re inching ever closer to the premiere of the seventh season of “Game of Thrones.” On July 16, we’ll be thrown back into the world of Westeros, where there’s plenty of winter and war to go around. If that seems too far away, you’re not alone. And the best way to bide your time? Pouring over fan theories for hints about what to expect this coming season, of course. Here, we’ve gathered five fan theories that may be covered this year in “Game of Thrones” — and they all involve your favorite characters, from undead Jon Snow to unburnt Daenerys Targaryen.
Tyrion Lannister
A very popular theory among “Game of Thrones” fans suggests that Tyrion is not a Lannister, but a Targaryen. According to the premise, Tyrion is the product of a nonconsensual relationship between Mad King Aerys and Tywin’s wife Joanna. The series itself has given some evidence to support the theory. Tywin told Tyrion, on two occasions, that he was not his son. And Daenerys’ dragons didn’t attack Tyrion when he interacted with them for the first time in season six. Coincidence? We think not.
3. Jaime will kill Cersei When Cersei was young, she encountered a soothsayer, Maggy the Frog. She told the young Cersei that she would have three children, that those children would all die prematurely, and that she would be queen only until a “younger, more beautiful” one takes her place. So far, all of those predictions, save the last, have come true. In “A Feast for Crows,” Maggy has one last prophecy: “And when your tears have drowned you, the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you.” Valonqar is High Valyrian for “little brother,” and Jaime is mere minutes younger than his twin sister. And? He’s got plenty to be mad about, what with her destroying the Sept of Baelor. Jaime and Cersei Lannister
Samwell Tarley

2. “GoT” is a story being told by Sam John Bradley, who plays Samwell Tarley, has suggested as much. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he notes that the gyroscopes from the “Game of Thrones” intro being in the Library of Masters is no coincidence. “It could mean any number of things,” he says. “If you take the logic of the story now, the story of Westeros and the story of the battle for the Iron Throne, it would be a book in that library.”
4. “The prince who was promised” In the mythology of the series, there’s a prophecy about a hero named Azor Ahai. The legend says Azor will be reborn as “the prince who was promised,” one last great hero who vanquishes the darkness with his flaming sword, Lightbringer. The prophecy also says that he’ll be reborn one day “amidst salt and smoke.” Melisandre believed, at first, that Stannis Baratheon was that prince. But now that he’s gone, it’s pretty clear that either Jon or Dany fit the bill — Jon being born of salt (his mother’s tears) and smoke (the battle at the Tower of Joy); and Dany being unburnt.

and violent as his plays. TNT’s drama “Will,” premiering July 10, ditches powdered wigs and formality to turn 16thcentury London into the seductive and dangerous world that it was, where people lived fast and died young. At the center of it was Shakespeare, played by British newcomer Laurie Davidson, who doesn’t take long to go from wideeyed boy from the countryside to getting tangled up in the Protestant Reformation, adultery and trying to feed Londoners’ passion for theater. In short, “Will” is giving Shakespeare back to the people. “The amazing thing about Shakespeare is he was writing plays where people from all walks of life were attending,” says Davidson, who was recruited out of his final year of acting school in London to play the young Bard. “So Shakespeare had to write plays that connected with a huge variety of people and be really clever about it.” In the 16th century, playwrights were the rock stars, and “Will”
takes that literally with a heavy dose of spikes, leather and colored hair straight out of the ‘70s punk rock era. The gritty aesthetic is thanks to writer and producer Craig Pearce, a longtime Baz Luhrmann collaborator whose resume includes “Romeo + Juliet” and “Great Gatsby.” It’s not long before Shakespeare becomes the David Bowie of his era — with a few lessons from Eminem. The influence of “Hamilton” in the fusion of music and history is clear, with Shakespeare

getting into what is the 16th-century version of a rap battle in the first episode. To make the scene flow, Davidson watched “Straight Outta Compton” and “8 Mile” on the advice of director Shekhar Kapur. “Whilst I didn’t go full-on gangsta rap,” he says, “it just gave an idea of the way that people use words as weapons.” Since little is known about Shakespeare’s life, “Will” has a lot of creative freedom and uses it to get to the story behind the famous plays. “What Pearce did an amazing job of is trying to get inside the mind of why he wrote these plays.” Of course, Shakespeare’s most famous contemporary Christopher Marlowe (Jamie Campbell Bower) also features in the show, which winks at their checkered past before setting the two up as frenemies. “They basically see the good things in each other’s lives, and they want what the other person has,” Davidson explains. Love, religious conflict, punk music and dramatic tension — sounds like a Shakespeare-worthy production.

Applicants tend to panic when they read job listings asking for years of experience, says Larssen, but they shouldn’t. After all, “experience” isn’t limited to full-time employment. Many students actually build up a résumé of marketable skills in college through internships, part-time jobs, volunteer work and even leadership positions. So how can they use these start-off gigs to boost their credibility? By “highlighting the experiences that are most relevant to the job they’re applying to,” says Larssen. Say you were a campustour coordinator and now you’re applying
to a sales job. Rather than just talking about your day-to-day duties leading students around your school, she says “highlight stories that show your abilities related to communication and relationship-building.” In other words, strut what you’ve got — strategically.
Don’t be afraid to intern If you’re finding it hard to get your foot in the door, an internship can be a great starting point, says Larssen. Just make sure you’re not signing up for a coffeefetching gig. “The ideal internships are the ones that give you some hands-on experience in the field you hope to go into,” she explains. During the interview stage, be sure to ask what types of projects you’ll be working on to make sure you’ll finish with an array of skills under your belt.
Another good question to ask: “What have former interns gone on to do?, says Larssen. “This can tell you a lot about whether the internship will set you up for a good next step.” Once you’ve secured an internship, build strong relationships with the staff. Not only will that increase your chances of being offered a full-time job with the company, but it’ll also set you up for future opportunities. “Even if they can’t hire you, they’ll be more likely to help you find a job elsewhere or recommend you for other positions,” says Larssen.
Be bold with your application A job application is your chance to put your best foot forward — so don’t be shy. Say you’re applying to a marketing job, don’t just submit your résumé and cover letter and shamelessly
proclaim that you can do the job. Show them that you’re qualified by putting together a mock marketing plan, perhaps even a slideshow that details a clever social media strategy, says the expert. It might sound crazy, but it’s worked before, explains Larssen. She uses the example of a writer who applied for a copywriting job and was rejected because of her lack of experience, but decided to make a case for herself. “She wrote back to the hiring manager and said, thanks so much for the opportunity, and also, here are 10 taglines I came up with for your company, free of charge — enjoy.” The stunt landed her the job. “Take a chance,” says Larssen. You might not have years of experience, but if you can showcase your skills in a way that make a hiring manager want to give you a shot, go for it.

IF CELTICS DON’T PAY ISAIAH, SOME OTHER TEAM WILL
OPINION
DANNY PICARD
@dannypicard
Isaiah Thomas will never see an actual Brinks truck pulling up to his house. But I got news for the Boston Celtics: He’s going to get whatever he thinks should be inside. As well he should. Thomas — who’s entering the final year of his contract — once again referred to the armored vehicle, while speaking to Comcast SportsNet’s A. Sherrod Blakely at the NBA’s Summer League on Friday. “I’m a max guy,” Thomas said when asked how he viewed his impending free agency, while being reminded by Blakely, of the large amounts of money being thrown around this offseason. “I deserve the max,” added Thomas. “We just have to continue to take care of business on the court, and let the cards fall where they may. “I’m happy for all the guards and all the other guys getting their money, because they de-
serve it. But my time’s coming. They know they gotta bring the Brinks truck out. They know that.” It was a deja-vu moment for sure. Because Thomas said nearly the same exact thing last year, at the Summer League, to Comcast SportsNet’s Blakely. “They better bring out the Brinks truck, “said Thomas in 2016. “They’re paying everybody else. I gotta get something.” Thomas’ status as a “max” player will be debated forever, it seems. But come on. The guy’s got a point. They are, in fact, paying everybody else. And in the last calendar year, his Celtics have dished out multiple max contracts to players who weren’t even Celtics: Al Horford last July, and Gordon Hayward last week. Horford signed a four-year, $113 million deal at the age of 30. Hayward signed a fouryear, $128 million deal at the age of 27. That’s $28 million a year for Horford, and $32 million a year for Hayward. Again, both players signed these contracts with the C’s before they were even able to find

themselves on the right side of Gino Time. So when Thomas — who turns 29 in February — starts talking about Brinks trucks, he’s not kidding. Forget about all the crazy contracts being dished out around the rest of the league. Thomas doesn’t have to go any further than Horford and Hayward while negotiating with C’s
president of basketball operations Danny Ainge. Ainge has had plenty of success on the free-agent market the last two offseasons. Some of that credit, of late, has been given to coach Brad Stevens for his relationship with Hayward while coaching him at Butler. All of a sudden, Boston has the look and feel of a “destina-
First-place Red Sox slump into All-Star break The Red Sox (50-39) closed the first half of their 2017 season in perfect sequence to how they played the first three months of the campaign — with zero consistency. On the Fourth of July, the Sox were riding high having won six straight games. Since then, they’ve dropped four of their last five, and now head to the MLB All-Star break on a down note. The Sox lost, 5-3, to the Rays in St. Petersburg
Sunday afternoon as Joe Kelly coughed up two runs out of the bullpen in the eighth inning. It followed a decent performance from David Price, who allowed just two earned runs on five hits in six innings of work. The only Red Sox runs in their first-half finale gave via the home run as Mookie Betts bashed one to left center in the first inning and Dustin Pedroia hit a two-run blast to right in the seventh.
The Sox lost three of four to the Rays. GETTY IMAGES
Despite the ugly performance along the Gulf of Mexico this past weekend by the Sox, they will enter the second half of the season in first place in the AL East. The Rays (47-43) are creeping up the division standings and are 3.5 games behind
the Sox while the Yankees are also 3.5 behind Boston. New York will be in town for a three-game set against the Sox starting this Friday. The Yankees lead the season series over the Sox so far, 4-1. MATT BURKE
tion” city in the NBA for players who have the right to choose. But let’s be honest: Horford and Hayward wouldn’t be Celtics if it wasn’t for Thomas. He’s the reason. Not the Answer. Not the Truth. Not the Process. The Reason. Without Thomas, the Celtics would’ve had 30 wins last season. He finished the year third
in the NBA in scoring, averaging 28.9 points per game, behind James Harden (29.1) and Russell Westbrook (31.6). If the C’s had just 30 wins last year, I’m pretty sure Hayward would still be in Utah. Or maybe he would’ve went to Miami. But he wouldn’t be coming to Boston. And last offseason, it was evident that Thomas’ presence and recruiting skills convinced Horford to choose the Celtics. Sure, Ainge traded for Thomas. And he obviously struck gold. But when that gold starts to make everybody else rich, there comes a time where you need to pay the man who’s the reason it’s all possible. So, the next time Thomas starts talking about Brinks trucks, he won’t be kidding. And if the Celtics don’t want to pay him what’s inside, somebody else will. Who knows, maybe they’ll even drive it to his house. Listen to “The Danny Picard Show” at dannypicard.com, iTunes, Google Play, and on the PodcastOne network. Aries Be careful how you handle family matters and people who want something from you. It’s important to carefully gauge what you can do before you make promises.
Libra Express the way you feel. Not everyone will agree, but at least you will make your point clear and find out who will stand with you.
Taurus Consider where certain information is coming from before you get worked up over nothing. An impulsive act will not make matters better.
Scorpio Emotions will take charge, leaving you in a quandary. Don’t let jealousy or possessiveness ruin your day or a relationship with someone special.
Gemini Physical and emotional changes will make your life easier and less stressful. Discuss your plans with a loved one and prepare to move ahead. Romance is in the stars.
Sagittarius Rethink the way you handle your money or any health, legal or contractual matters. It’s important to see all sides of a situation before making a change.
Cancer You can make positive changes at home and within important partnerships if you stick to a set budget. Be amicable and willing to compromise for the best results.
Capricorn Think big, but be realistic in your pursuits. Stay away from anyone asking you to take a risk or be impulsive. Don’t stray from your comfort zone.
Leo Seize any chance you get to let your Leo charm take control and win you popularity as well as favors. Offering input and handson assistance will seal a deal.
Aquarius Share your thoughts and listen to the feedback. Much can be accomplished if you collaborate. Physical improvements can be made and will draw compliments.
Virgo Look at the big picture. A little finesse and charm will get you much further then criticism. Don’t let a personal incident disrupt your day.
Pisces Setbacks will develop if you are misleading. Be open about any change you want to make so you can feel free to implement it without being sneaky. EUGENIA LAST
