TRUMP BACKTRACKS ON TRUMP JR. HIRES LAWYER MUSK TWEETS PICTURES CYBER UNIT WITH RUSSIA FOR RUSSIA PROBES OF FIRST MODEL 3

1

President Donald Trump backtracked on his push for a cybersecurity unit with Russia, tweeting that he did not think it could happen, hours after his proposal was harshly criticized by Republicans who said Moscow could not be trusted. Trump said on Twitter early on Sunday that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed on Friday forming “an impenetrable Cybersecurity unit”

to address issues like the risk of cyber meddling in elections. The idea appeared to be a political non-starter. It was immediately scorned by several of Trump’s fellow Republicans, who questioned why the United States would work with Russia after Moscow’s alleged meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.

2

Donald Trump Jr. has hired a lawyer to represent him in Russia-related investigations, his office and the lawyer said, as Republicans voiced concern about a meeting between the U.S. president’s son and a Russian. Trump Jr. hired New York lawyer Alan Futerfas, who specializes in criminal defense. Futerfas would not say when he was retained or whether he played any part in the state-

ments Trump Jr. made over the weekend about a meeting with a Russian lawyer. Trump Jr. met the Russian, Natalia Veselnitskaya, in June 2016, during the presidential election campaign, at Trump Tower in New York. He has said he agreed to meet Veselnitskaya, described by The New York Times as having links to the Kremlin, after being promised damaging information about presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

TRUMP’S ELECTION PANEL IS TOO SECRET

The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s election commission on Monday, saying it had failed to follow federal law governing public access and transparency for such advisory groups. The ACLU said in a statement that the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity had already held its first meeting without giving any notice and that its upcoming meeting

would only be available via webcast. The commission last week said it would meet on July 19 in Washington near the White House. Representatives for the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, alleges violations of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, which seeks to ensure transparent government operations.

Tesla Inc. Chief Executive Elon Musk tweeted pictures of the first Model 3 sedan to roll off the assembly line. Tesla board member Ira Ehrenpreis was the first to put down a $1,000 deposit on the Model 3 and gifted the car to Musk for his 46th birthday, Musk said in a tweet. Musk has high hopes for the $35,000 Model 3, aimed at the mass market, and expects the rollout to help the

company deliver five times its current annual sales volume. Tesla’s shares have taken a beating in the last few weeks, as investors have become increasingly concerned that demand for the company’s existing Model S sedan is weakening.

Boston at risk for increased heat-related deaths as climate change continues Boston is among the top-five cities expected to see increased heat-related deaths by 2090, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

kristin.toussaint@metro.us

Heat waves are more than just an annoyance — they can be deadly. And, for city-dwellers, that lethal risk is expected to worsen in the coming decades. Boston is anticipated to be especially affected. It’s in the top-five cities expected to see increased heat-related deaths by 2090, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). The environmental nonprofit recently released a report that looked at how heat can harm Americans without the protections outlined in the Paris climate agreement, following President Donald Trump’s move to pull the United States out of the accord. Without the Paris climate agreement, the NRDC report said, public health in the upcoming decades is at risk. “Worsening summer heat waves could kill 13,860 Americans each year by midcentury, and as many as 29,850 a year by the end of the century,” the report found. Those numbers look at the entire country; Boston specifically is expected to get hit hard, the NRDC said, with 1,340 potential heat and climate changerelated deaths here each year by the 2090s. Though the report is new, the looming threat — at least to Boston city officials — is not. “This is the first report

I’ve seen with specific numbers as to predictions, but I think the extreme heat has always been one of the impacts we’ve been anticipating and planning for,” said Stacey Kokaram, director of the Office of Public Health Preparedness at the Boston Public Health Commission. “We know there already are heat-related issues for populations [here], and with this increase, we know they’re going to be exacerbated,” she added. Paul Shoemaker, who works in the Environmental Health Office within the BPHC, explained that heat is a public health concern for residents who are medically vulnerable, the elderly and low-income residents who don’t have resources to cool down. In 1995, a heat wave in Chicago killed more than 700 people. Officials said they looked at that situation to come up with prevention efforts in Boston. The NRDC report concluded that cities should continue to strengthen their heat protection effort, regardless of the Paris Agreement. “As part of our work on Climate Ready Boston and the Resilience strategy, we have actually come to similar conclusions,” Kokaram said. Mayor Marty Walsh has already promised that Boston will continue its efforts to combat climate change despite the president’s decision, and the city has been working to handle the heat waves that are expected to be more frequent and severe. “We do have plans now that talk about what to do for heat emergency, and a lot of that is around cooling centers, around messaging to our populations and making sure people check on their neighbors,” Kokaram said.

When Boston’s Holocaust Memorial was vandalized in June, Jewish community leaders spoke about how they will rebuild. On Tuesday, those leaders, Holocaust survivors and state and local officials will come together at a rededication ceremony for the memorial. Gov. Charlie Baker and Mayor Marty Walsh will join the Combined Jewish Philanthropies and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston at the memorial in Carmen Park on Congress Street at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

The public is welcome to attend the rededication as well, organizers said. James E. Isaac, a 21-year-old Roxbury man, was charged with throwing a rock at the memorial in the early hours of June 28, shattering a glass panel that was etched with the numbers tattooed on the arms of Jewish people during the Holocaust. Isaac pleaded not guilty to vandalism. His attorneys said that he had

a history of mental illness and is “struggling considerably,â€? the Boston Globe reported. Yet regardless of motive, the destruction of the sacred place had a strong impact on the community, others said. The morning after the incident, Israel Arbeiter, a Holocaust survivor, spoke about when he and his wife learned that the memorial had been damaged.

“It was 6 in the morning that my wife came into our bedroom, she was shaking and crying. ‌ She said, ‘They destroyed the memorial,’â€? he said in June. The memorial consists of six towers to represent the 6 million Jews who died during the Holocaust, the six years during which Hitler’s Final Solution took place and the six main death camps where the majority of European Jews were murdered, an official said. There are 132 panes of glass in total, including the one that was shattered. At the rededication ceremony on Tuesday, a new glass panel will be unveiled. The officials set to attend will “echo the sentiments expressed by so many last week: Our community is strong, we stand together to help each other, and we reject hatred,â€? the event listing reads.

Corey Feldman is done with the haters, but ready for Haverhill The actor brings his “angelic musical tour to town. SARAH SWEENEY @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

There’s a new circus in town and it’s not the Ringling Bros., but that kid from “The Goonies. Corey Feldman, the actor renowned for his child roles in “Stand By Me and “The Lost Boys, also makes music, as evidenced by a now-infamous “Today Show performance that went viral last September — and not in a good way. But Feldman, who was promoting his album “Angelic 2 The Core, was undeterred. He returned to the “Today Show in October to prove the haters wrong and, alongside his winged all-female backing band

the Angels, is now touring the country. Sure, Feldman’s music won’t light everyone’s fire, but when the tour bus pulls into Haverhill for a two-night stay at the Whiskey Barrel Bar, the actor and musician plans to deliver. The show— part “Hot Tub Time Machine to the ’80s, part conversion therapy for the haters—is already notorious. On the Milwaukee leg of the tour, he knocked his front tooth out with the microphone and then proceeded to scout around for it. But even the snafus are all gravy to Feldman. “We give this message of love and light and many people don’t even know what they’re going to experience, the 45-year-old star says. “But there’s an enlightenment that happens. The ascen-

sion is real. Check out more from our recent conversation with Feldman. What to expect at the show: “In a nostalgic way, we take people on a bit of a time-travel experience. We play songs from the new album, and then we also go back and do film soundtracks, stuff from different chapters from my life and career. We take people through this chronology in history, and bring them back to a happier point. And that right there is the beginning of it. From there, the music is really positive, and it’s a bright and shiny show with colorful lights and fun bells and whistles. On the haters: “Those people there to

hate on me personally are probably surprised to find out that I don’t lip sync, that I play multiple instruments during the show, everybody up there is doing a lot of work and it’s a very serious show and it’s a great show. Of course, the haters want to go in there and laugh at everybody and point their fingers, but even those people find themselves outnumbered. It’s about enlightenment. At the end of the day we go in and we rock.

On the Angels: “The band came from my company, Corey’s Angels, which I created five years ago. As a single guy, I was dating all these girls and hanging at the Playboy mansion and I realized that all these girls out here, who had moved here from all over the country, all over the world, had all these aspirations. They wanted to be actresses, they wanted to be models, they want to be in Playboy and they

want to do this stuff that is so limiting to them. Because when I start talking to them and getting to know them, I find that they have all these amazing talents and abilities that they’re not expressing. I just wanted to give them the belief system and the opportunity to maybe fix these girls before they got to the point where they could become better people and believe in themselves. His musical roots: “By the time I was 11, I became really aware of music and transfixed by Michael Jackson. But before Michael, the first thing I connected to was KISS and Shaun Cassidy and these pop icons of the ‘70s. I loved the theatrics, the makeup, the costumes.

Milk Bar teams up with &pizza in Cambridge After the closure of Tory Row last October and Crimson Corner moving down the road in April, the Brattle Street corner was ready for the taking. &pizza, a Washington, D.C., brand, has submitted new plans for the spot following some approval struggles with the Cambridge Board of Zoning Appeal. The conciliation? Partnering with New York bakery Milk Bar. “We’ve listened to the community and heard loud and clear that they’re looking for more than just another pizza shop — they want a neighborhood partner,” &pizza CEO and cofounder Michael Lastoria said in a statement. He added that “&pizza stands for connection, inclusion and unity, and joining forces with Milk Bar is a perfect example of how we will bring those values directly to Cambridge.” Milk &pizza in

Harvard Square will be the 13th storefront Milk Bar, the Momofuku Group’s iconic confectionery. Founder Christina Tosi, a James Beard award winner and judge on Fox’s “MasterChef,” is equally eager to expand into Boston. “The restaurants and cafés in Harvard Square help fuel some

of the most brilliant and innovative minds in the world, and I’m so excited for Milk Bar to be part of this community,” Tosi said in the same statement. Both &pizza and Milk Bar pride themselves on revolutionizing the culinary world with their tempting menu items. Farmer’s Daughter at &pizza, for instance, is a breakfast-inspired creation made with Italian sausage, egg and mozzarella. Lori Lane features ingredients like ricotta,

berries and powdered sugar for the dessert addicts. But realistically, Milk Bar takes the cake on sweets. It, too, offers pies alongside its business partner, with the oatand-brown-sugar-butterfilled Crack Pie being a bestseller across all locations. The birthday cake and truffles are equally addicting. Details on construction and an official opening date will be released later this summer.

Taking the red pen to the Red Sox Dishing out first half grades to the 2017 Red Sox. MATT BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

Metro gives out its firsthalf grades for a Red Sox team with plenty of room for improvement. Dustin Pedroia B+ The “Laser Show leads the Red Sox in batting average with a .303 mark. Despite having played in only 71 of 89 games so far, Pedroia is sixth among AL second basemen with 41 RBIs.

way through, his power numbers are ugly. He hit 21 dingers last year, but has just six so far in 2017.

Quick hits Eduardo Rodriguez B Christian Vazquez B+ Sandy Leon B Chris Young C+ Deven Marrero BJosh Rutledge C Tzu-Wei Lin INC Marco Hernandez C+ Sam Travis C+ Joe Kelly B Fernando Abad B Matt Barnes C Heath Hembree C Robby Scott CBen Taylor D Steven Wright INC

Pablo Sandoval F Sandoval must have a hell of an ear infection considering he hasn’t played since June 19. “Panda will go down as one of the worst free agent signings in franchise history when all is said and done (and all will be said and done soon).

Mitch Moreland A Moreland has been the surprise bat for the Sox this season as he has 12 homers with 41 RBIs. He’s also been reliable at first.

Andrew Benintendi C+ Benintendi is a victim of expectations here. He was the consensus favorite to be Rookie of the Year but has been just “good. He’s been getting on base with regularity lately though, so he could very well make a push to finish in second place behind the Yankees’ Aaron Judge for ROY.

Xander Bogaerts B – Bogaerts was expected to take things to the next level this season but half-

Mookie Betts B – Betts is another one who hasn’t entirely lived up to sky-high expectations.

Rick Porcello has a brutal 4-11 record with a 4.75 ERA this season. GETTY IMAGES

He’s having a fine season, leading the team in homers (16) and RBIs (53), but they aren’t the MVP-like numbers most expected heading into 2017. He ranks just 16th among MLB outfielders in RBIs this season. Jackie Bradley Jr. B+

Need An Attorney? Your Case Matters To You‌ So It Matters To Us!

The most inconsistent bat the Red Sox have had in years, JBJ has been a tad more consistent this season. His defense remains superb. Hanley Ramirez C If you’re a stat geek, you hate Hanley Ramirez. Ramirez has one of the worst WAR (wins above replacement) marks of any player in baseball. He was at 0.0 up until this past weekend when he skyrocketed himself to 0.1. Craig Kimbrel A+ The Dombrowski bashers quickly get slapped back down when you bring up that the Kimbrel trade in November of 2015 was Dombrowski’s first

major move as Red Sox boss. Kimbrel has 23 saves so far this season, good for fourth in MLB. His 68 strikeouts more than double the total of Minnesota’s star closer Brandon Kintzler (24). Chris Sale A+ Sale is having the most dominant season for a Red Sox starter since Pedro Martinez was at the height of his powers 17 years ago. Sale will be the starter for the American League in Tuesday night’s MLB All-Star Game. Drew Pomeranz A – Given the low expectations heading into the season, Pomeranz has been tremendous so far in 2017. The lefty is 9-4 with

a 3.60 ERA and he hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in a game in his last five outings. Rick Porcello D+ Porcello has had some tough luck, highlighted by his complete-game gem in a 1-0 loss to the Rays last Saturday. That said, in no way should the reigning Cy Young Award winner be 4-11 with a 4.75 ERA. David Price C+ Price is the kid who gets straight A’s but that’s mostly because of all the free time he has to study in detention. Price’s spats with the media, specifically Dennis Eckersley, have heaped some unwanted distractions on this team. Price loves him some drama. It doesn’t seem his teammates do.

Celts finally land a big man in Baynes Celtics fans have been screaming at Danny Ainge to get a big man who can rebound and Ainge finally obliged this week with the signing of center Aron Baynes. Baynes agreed to a one year, $4.3 million deal with the C’s. The 30-year-old Baynes averaged 4.4 rebounds and 4.9 points per game with the Pistons last season and he played three seasons with the San Antonio Spurs from 2012-15. Baynes is 6-foot-10 and is considered a slight upgrade when it comes to rebounding over Amir Johnson, who signed with the 76ers. Baynes has much better per-minute splits when it comes to rebounding than Johnson, whose rebounding average dipped from 6.4 to 4.6 in his two seasons in Boston.
