EMAILS SUGGEST TRUMP JR 16 SERVICE MEMBERS US MISSILE HITS TEST WELCOMED RUSSIAN HELP KILLED IN PLANE CRASH TARGET AS TENSION RISES

Presidential candidate Donald Trump’s eldest son eagerly agreed last year to meet a woman he was told was a Russian government lawyer who might have information incriminating Democratic rival Hillary Clinton as part of Moscow’s official support for his father, according to an email chain released on Tuesday. The emails in the chain were between Donald Trump Jr., who posted it on Twitter, and
Rob Goldstone, a publicist who helped to arrange the June 9, 2016, meeting with Natalia Veselnitskaya, who says she is a private lawyer and denies having Kremlin ties. “If it’s what you say I love it,” Trump Jr. said in a June 3, 2016 email that was part of the chain arranging the meeting. U.S. officials were investigating the cause of a military transport plane crash that killed 16 service members a day earlier, leaving a 5-mile trail of wreckage in rural northern Mississippi. The KC-130 Hercules aircraft disappeared from air traffic control radar over Mississippi after taking off from Cherry Point, North Carolina. It plunged into a field at approximately 4 p.m. on Monday in Mississippi’s LeFlore
County, about 100 miles north of Jackson, the state capital. Fifteen Marines and one Navy sailor were onboard, the U.S. Marine Corps said. The names of the deceased were being withheld until family members were notified. Further details on the crash were not released by military officials, but Gen. Robert Neller, Commandant of the Marine Corps, pledged “a thorough investigation into the cause of this tragedy.”

The United States said on Tuesday it shot down a simulated, incoming intermediate-range ballistic missile similar the ones being developed by countries like North Korea, in a new test of the nation’s defenses. Planned months ago, the U.S. missile defense test over the Pacific Ocean has gained significance after North Korea’s July 4 launch of an intercontinental ballistic
missile heightened concerns about the threat from Pyongyang. The test was the first-ever of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system against an incoming IRBM, which experts say is a faster and more difficult target to hit than shorter-range missiles. The U.S. Missile Defense Agency said the IRBM was designed to behave similarly to the kinds of missiles that could threaten the United States.

GROUP SUES TRUMP FOR BLOCKING TWITTER USERS

A free-speech group on Tuesday sued Donald Trump for blocking Twitter users from his @realDonaldTrump account, arguing the practice violates the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The lawsuit, brought by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University in New York and joined by seven individual Twitter users, claims Trump blocked a number of accounts whose owners replied to his tweets with comments that
criticized, mocked or disagreed with the president. Trump’s blocking of the accounts amounted to an unconstitutional effort to suppress dissent, according to the lawsuit filed in federal court in the Southern District of New York. Because Trump frequently turns to Twitter to make policy statements, his account qualifies as a public forum from which the government cannot exclude people on the basis of their views, according to the lawsuit.

A person of interest has been arrested and is in police custody in connection with the case of four men who were last seen Friday in Bucks County. In a morning briefing to members of the press, Bucks County District Attorney Matt Weintraub said that law enforcement officials have arrested Cosmo DiNardo, 20, of Bensalem, who has been re-arrested on a charge of illegal possession of a gun from February. Weintraub said DiNardo’s bail has been set at 10 percent of $1 million, at the urging of Weintraub’s office, because DiNardo is a person of interest in the case of the four Bucks County men who have been missing since last week. Though, the district attorney noted, DiNardo’s months-old charge is not connected to the missing individuals. “Sometimes, the chasm between being a person of interest and being a person accused and arrested, and certainly convicted, of a crime is so wide, we never cross it,” said Weintraub, cautioning the media to not jump to conclusions following DiNardo’s arrest.
Weintraub said that he wanted to caution reporters not to move too fast to report this story, as he had seen an article that claimed remains had been found by those searching for the men. “Slow and steady. This is a marathon, not a sprint,” said the district attorney. “No human remains have been found.” Weintraub said Tuesday that hundreds of law enforcement officials — including members of the state police, U.S. Marshals and the FBI — are involved in the search for the four missing men. Also, he said, the search is currently centered on a farm located along the 6000 block of Lower York Road in New Hope, which is owned by DiNardo’s family. The district attorney said that law enforcement officials are searching a “90-some acre” area with a “very fine-toothed comb” in the hopes of finding 22-year-old Mark Sturgis of Pennsburg, Tom Meo, 21, of Plumstead, Dean Finocchiaro, 18, of Middletown and Jimi Tar Patrick, in his late teens, of Newtown Township. Weintraub said that as the search continues, law enforcement officials are still trying to find out how all four of the missing individuals knew each other and what might have brought them to the DiNardos’ property.

Bring together podcasters and their enthusiasts, and you’ve already got the makings of a great party where everyone has ideas they think are unique and fresh. So you can count on a bash with room-intimate conversations when the Philadelphia Podcasting Society actually gathers more than 50 local podcasters for the 5th Annual Philadelphia Podcast Festival. “We decided to do a festival because Philadelphia is home to many great podcasts, and we wanted to raise their visibility, said festival organizer and Philadelphia Podcasting Society co-founder Teagan Kuruna. “We also wanted to provide ways for podcasters to record live and for podcasters and fans to meet each other. The festival will be held in various locations around town (the Troc, PhillyCAM, Amalgam Comics and Coffeehouse, etc.). Along with our reliance on homegrown celebrities (as opposed to “some cities’ podcast scenes dominated by star power, as Kuruna put it), one of the great things about Philly podcasts and this event is that it reflects the diversity of people and perspectives in the city. “I don’t think there’s one overarching theme or connection because they’re all reflective of the creativity Philly holds, Kuruna said. “Rather than a homogenous group, Philly’s podcasts are varied in content [true crime, sex, race, comedy, sports, movies, music, etc.] and format [roundtable, interviews, scripted fiction]. One group to look for is arguably the city’s most popular: “Black Tribbles,
which goes by the tag “too cool to be geeks, too cute to be nerds in their quest to be THE African-American Nerdist. “Without trying, we’ve become the nexus for everything black and geeky in Philly — a dope place to be, and we carry that responsibility on our shoulders proudly, said Len Webb, aka the BatTribble — the podcast’s creator, graphic designer and executive producer — of his quintet of fellow Tribbles. Podcasting allows an unfiltered, uncensored voice to be heard (“and to find a tribe of like minds, he said), and the Tribbles’ unbridled enthusiasm and knowledge is truly explosive in a group setting. “Being in a crew makes it more fun, satisfying and easier for every one of every geeky persuasion
“Philadelphia is home to many great podcasts, and we wanted to raise their visibility. Teagan Kuruna
to feel included. We’re unique in that people not only want to listen to us, they want to be in the room with us, to say they were there, Webb said. Recording live — as Tribbles will do at Fishtown’s Amalgam Comics — is therefore the best way to witness the group dynamics and antics. “This will be our fourth time at bat as the festival’s closing act, which is validation that we do dope live shows, Webb said. The Philadelphia Podcast Festival runs July 14-23. For the full lineup of live podcast recordings and locations visit phillypodfest.com.

Los Angeles spells out low-cost, bold Olympic future in Games pitch Bid chairman Casey Wasserman said in L.A.’s penultimate presentation to IOC members before the Sept. 13 vote that the city, competing with Paris, would serve the Olympic movement. Los Angeles could deliver a low-cost, low-risk model for the Olympic Games, officials outlining its 2024 candidacy to the International Olympic Committee said on Tuesday. Bid chairman Casey Wasserman said in L.A.’s penultimate presentation to IOC members before the Sept. 13 vote that the city, competing with Paris, would serve the Olympic movement. “We don’t believe in ultimatums. We don’t believe this decision is only about us or Paris or 2024. This about the future direction of the Olympic movement,” Casey Wasserman said. President Donald Trump later tweeted his support for the Los Angeles bid. “Working hard to get the Olympics for the United States [L.A.]. Stay
tuned!,” he said. Wasserman again left the door open for the 2028 Olympics, with Paris widely seen as the frontrunner for the 2024 event. The French capital, led by recentlyelected French President Emmanuel Macron, presented its project after Los Angeles. The IOC will then vote on whether to ratify its executive board’s recommendation to award on Sept. 13. both the 2024 Olympics and the 2028 Games at the same time. Multiple Olympic track and field champion and LA bid official Allyson Felix said IOC members had asked about 2028. “We clarified the focus is on 2024, but we would be blessed to have any Games,” Felix said. Wasserman had earlier stressed the importance of the decision on 2024. “This decision is about the future direction of the Olympic Movement. Our objective is to best serve your (the IOC’s) needs, not only ours,” he said “We are offering a city ready to go. We are offering a Games with no incremental costs. We are offering a lasting definition of Olympic sustainability.” Four other cities —

Hamburg, Rome, Budapest and Boston — have withdrawn bids, scared off by the size and cost of the Games, forcing the IOC to recommend the double awarding to make it more attractive for potential hosts. Los Angeles officials highlighted the privately funded model, while stressing the involvement of the United States in the wider Olympic movement with thousands of foreign athletes training at U.S. colleges. “We need bold new solutions and bold new thinking,” L.A. mayor Eric Garcetti told reporters. “We want to leave something different.” REUTERS

I remember getting my ass kicked in junior high school. A new girl from a scrappy town had moved in next door, and we were the ultimate frenemies. One week, we’d be hanging out; the next, fighting on the school bus with kids egging us on until we were rolling around on the ground. She fought dirty — hair pulling, kicking my forehead, scratching — but she taught me how to fight. But I had to relearn everything at my first boxing lesson at Joltin’ Jabs in Manayunk. Owner Joey DeMalavez started training at 14 years old, was in the ring at 15 and fighting professionally from ages 38 to 41, which is almost unheard of. From the so-called Henry Ave. Farm School, he has that “Roxsh-buruh” accent and looks younger than he is at 51. Today, he is a boxing coach, fitness trainer, life coach and motivational speaker, and he wants to get out of training people and into television. He’s currently training Charles Barkley, and he wants to keep helping retired athletes and overweight people stay in shape — on TV and with exercise videos. But for now, he gets to train a newbie. Half the class was strength training and cardio. And there was no air conditioning. There’s no air conditioning — ever, even if it’s 100 degrees. “I train in a wool cap and long sleeves. I don’t believe in it,” said DeMalavez. The first rule of fight club is to stay slim, with your hands in fists up around your face, always tight, protecting yourself with your stance to the side. The first two knuck-
les (pointer and middle fingers) are the strongest and the last two are the weakest, so always hit with the first two. We jabbed, then jabbed forward and back in a shuffle exercise that we learned for our warmup like a Mr. Miyagi lesson. Throw in some uppercuts and then a full-out assault on the punching bags tied to the wall (my favorite part). We had to do our Rocky speed-bag workout in a trance-like 1-2-3 rhythm, in a small circle, with our fists, then the other side. My ginger friend, who has been training for eight months and who boxes to stay in shape, was going at those speed bags like a beast. Boxing was almost meditative at points when it started flowing, and I can see why it’s ad-

dicting. For good measure, the instructor threw in some crazy exercises like the crab, the bear and the beloved burpees. Punching the moving bag was a lot harder than expected. Then we got to punch Joey and his hand pads. His classes are half men and women, as it’s a great workout and tops for letting out aggression. Even though Joey looks intimidating with his tattoos and stellar shape, he was always encouraging and didn’t laugh at me once, bless his heart.

PENN STATE HAZING TRIAL Police: Penn State frat compelled pledges to drink before hazing death A Penn State University fraternity pledge who died in February after consuming massive amounts of alcohol was one of several prospective members who felt compelled to drink to gain admission, a police detective testified on Tuesday. David Scicchitano, a detective in State College, Pennsylvania, took the witness stand for a third day at a hearing for 16 fraternity brothers charged in the Feb. 4 haz-

ing death of Timothy Piazza. “Multiple people told me that this was a rite of passage, a way to get accepted by the fraternity,” Scicchitano said. “Pledges felt if they didn’t participate, they wouldn’t get into the fraternity.” The 16 members of Beta Theta Pi face a range of criminal charges after Piazza, 19, fell multiple times, including down a flight of stairs, after ingesting toxic amounts of alcohol. Authorities say the fraternity brothers waited for hours before calling for
medical help. The preliminary hearing determines whether there is enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial. The proceeding, which has moved slowly due to the number of defendants, is scheduled to continue for at least two more days in August. Steven Trialonis, a defense lawyer for Daniel Casey, the “pledge master” who allegedly gave Piazza a bottle of vodka he was expected to drink, questioned
whether Piazza and other pledges were forced to drink or participated willingly. Trialonis also argued that “The Gauntlet,” a drinking obstacle course in which pledges consumed large amounts of vodka, wine and beer in the span of a few minutes, was not as dangerous as prosecutors had portrayed, saying only two prospective members had ever been injured. But Scicchitano testified that the pledges “felt compelled” to drink. REUTERS

Newborn orangutan dies at Philly Zoo The animal, born on July 9, died soon after birth. HAYDEN MITMAN @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
A newborn Sumatran orangutan, born at the Philadelphia Zoo just two days ago, has passed away, officials announced Tuesday morning. In a statement, zoo officials said that though the baby, born around 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, July 9, “appeared to behave normally through the afternoon and early evening of its birth, it died overnight.” “In an initial postmortem examination, we identified severe congestion in the newborn’s lungs and a possible congenital heart defect,” said Dr. Keith Hinshaw, Philadelphia Zoo’s director of animal health, in a statement. “We will likely be able to confirm the exact cause of death after the full necropsy results are available, which will take approximately four to six weeks.” The infant was born to a 25-year-old Sumatran orangutan named Tua. Zoo officials said the infant’s father was a 22-yearold Sumatran orangutan named, Sugi.
The two have another child, an 8-year-old named Batu, and all three live at the zoo’s PECO Primate Reserve. According to zoo officials — although staff and a team of medical consultants were on hand — Tua delivered the baby without any need for outside intervention. “Zoo staff and volunteers are saddened by this unexpected loss. With Tua’s parenting skills and the apparently successful delivery, we were optimistic about this birth,” said Dr. Andy Baker, the zoo’s chief operating officer. “The keepers who work with the orangutans every day are affected deeply themselves, but will also be watching Tua closely for how she reacts to this loss. Animals are individuals, and we don’t know how this will affect her.” Zoo officials noted that Sumatran orangutans are considered critically endangered. Fewer than 15,000 are thought to survive in nature and, zoo officials said, approximately 85 Sumatran orangutans live in zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. “Although this is a sad loss, it is also a reminder that we are all responsible for the fate of orangutans in the wild on Sumatra and Borneo,” said Baker.

Donald Trump Jr. emails may be evidence of crime, experts say Emails could be the “smoking gun” that the Trump campaign was colluding with Russia. ERIN TIERNAN @ErinTiernan
erin.tiernan@metro.us
Donald Trump Jr.’s emails released on Tuesday offer fairly clear evidence that the president’s son broke campaign finance law, according to legal experts. It is illegal to solicit or accept campaign contributions from foreign nationals. Campaign contributions are defined as “anything of value,” which includes information and political opposition research. In emails the president’s eldest son posted
to Twitter just as The New York Times published an exposé, he explains he met with a Russian lawyer last June to get “incriminating” information on Hillary Clinton. In the email thread with a subject line that read, “Russia — Clinton — private and confidential,” Trump Jr. wrote that he’d “love” to get the information that a mutual contact of Trump and the Russians said would “incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to” his father. him a “high-quality person.” In an off-camera afternoon White House briefing, Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders read a prepared statement from the president. “My son is a highquality person, and I applaud his transparency,” the statement read. Trump had so far been silent on the growing controversy around the meeting last summer, which went public on Saturday. Wa s h i n g t o n - b a s e d government watchdogs Common Cause filed complaints with the Federal Election Commission and the Justice Department on Tuesday asking them to investigate Trump Jr. for soliciting a foreign contribution.
“Whether or not he actually received that information does not matter in the eyes of the law. Trump’s solicitation of the information is what constitutes the violation,” Paul S. Ryan, Common Cause vice president for policy and litigation, said in a statement. The emails refer to “some official documents,” and Ryan said if Trump Jr. accepted any documents as a campaign contribution from a foreign national, it would be an additional crime. A spokesman for Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government, declined to comment, the HuffPost reported.

An employee’s request for a ‘mental health day’ has gone viral Would you be brave enough to ask your boss? ERIN TIERNAN @ErinTiernan
erin.tiernan@metro.us
Study after study has shown the personal and productivity benefits of a mental health day for employees, but the stigma still surrounds the concept in most workplaces. It’s a stigma Madalyn Parker is trying to break. The web developer sent Twitter into a tizzy after she emailed her boss and co-workers to tell them why she would be out of the office. “I’m taking today and tomorrow to focus on my mental health. Hopefully I’ll be back next week refreshed and back to 100
[percent],” she wrote. The response from Parker’s CEO was so supportive she decided to share it on Twitter. Here was the CEO’s response: “Hey Madalyn,” CEO Ben Congleton began, “I just wanted to personally thank you for sending emails like this. Every time you do, I use it as a reminder of the importance of using sick days for mental health — I can’t believe this is not standard practice at all organizations. You are an example to us all, and help cut through the stigma so we can all bring our whole selves to work.” The tweet has since gone viral with more than 10,500 retweets and over 34,000 likes since it was posted on June 30. Parker has struggled with anxiety, depression and suicidal
thoughts since childhood and after a solid six months of happiness

about being open about my mental health,” she tweeted. But it eventually got bad enough where she felt she needed to talk about it with her bosses — against even her own mother’s advice. Her bosses at Olark Live Chat were receptive, though. She even worked with them to engineer a change in the company culture and rework its
sick leave policy to include time for mental health days. “I feel incredibly lucky that my personal experience has played out this way. I know that it is more the exception than the rule,” she said on Medium. Since then she’s been on a mission to end the stigma around talking about mental health and taking care of mental health — that’s why she
sent the email to her team. Twitter was overwhelmingly supportive of Parker’s advocacy, but one user wondered, “Who needs to know what kind of sick I am when I log sick leave?” “I’m specific to be an example so my team knows that they can feel comfortable taking sick leave for mental health, even if they don’t say it,” Parker replied.

A pair of teens made fidget spinners famous and got rich in the process Not only did the New York teens make money from fidget spinners, they became more popular at school.
KIMBERLY M. AQUILINA @KimESTAqui kimberly.aquilina@metro.us
Fidget spinners, a new craze that has basically divided the world into two camps: #TeamSpinner and #TeamStopIt, were created by two teenagers who made $350,000 in the first six months of sales. Fidget spinners are gadgets that look like airplane propellers or spinning car rims in a 50 Cent video. They are used to help people with anxiety or OCD focus on tasks or to just annoy the hell out of school teachers. We have two 17-yearold high school students,
Allan Maman and Cooper Weiss, to thank for it. Maman and Weiss founded Fidget360, one of the first companies to mass-produce fidget spinners after Maman was looking for a toy to play with to help his attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), he explained to CNBC. “I would say that initially a lot of adults probably saw fidget spinners and thought they were a dumb idea, Maman told Mic. “When I first started and showed my parents what I was making, they were like, ‘OK, so it spins. There’s nothing special or too neat about it.’ But once you’re a kid and you see, like, how good it is to have in class and how fun it is and how everyone wants one, you get it. “I think kids or teens have a unique ability to see markets for certain
products before older people, he continued. “Especially when it comes to Gen Z, kids are the first ones to pick up on that stuff, and now with the internet, we can just make it for ourselves. After seeing fidget spinners on Etsy, Maman decided to use the 3-D printers at his high school in Armonk, New York, to mass-produce them. Maman teamed up with Weiss, his partner in a social media venture called Nito, and asked his physics teacher for lessons in 3-D printing. A few weeks and hundreds of fidget spinners later, the school wasn’t happy with the teens earning $25.99 a pop. “They didn’t like the concept of us making a profit off of the school’s 3-D printers, Weiss told Mic. “I recognized them as a phenom the first week
Jacob Matos loves his ďŹ dget spinner and he has two teenagers to thank for it. LUIS MATOS
I started selling them at school, Maman said. “Literally every kid came up to me asking me to
get one. “I had to stay after school until 8 p.m. to keep up with demand, he add-
ed. “I became really good friends with the janitors and they would leave the door to the physics room unlocked so I could use the printer nonstop. Maman was called into the vice principal’s office and told if he didn’t halt production, he’d be suspended from school. Since they were making mad spinner money, the two young entrepreneurs purchased their own 3-D printer and set up shop in the basement of Weiss’ parents’ house. The teens admit they made a mistake when they decided against making the spinners with injection molding in China, a high-volume manufacturing process that injects the medium into a mold. “If we got the injection molding during that time, all of those [sales] would have been ours, Weiss told CNBC.

Your Keurig can now get you high BrewBudz, a completely compostable, Keurigcompatible pod allows patients and consumers to sip coffee, tea and cocoa infused with cannabis.
KIMBERLY M. AQUILINA @KimESTAqui kimberly.aquilina@metro.us
Not everyone is a joker, a smoker or a midnight toker. Whether you use marijuana for medicinal or recreational purposes, you can now Keurig and chill with the world’s first product line of cannabisinfused coffee, tea and cocoa. A flower-based edibles company, Cannabiniers, launched Brewbudz on Tuesday. More than 61 percent of Americans drink more than 600 million cups of coffee every day, according to the com-
pany, and Brewbudz is a discreet way to sip with Mary Jane. “What we are aspiring to create is the normalization of cannabis consumption in a way that integrates with consumers’ already established habits and lifestyles,” said Timothy Walters, president of Cannabiniers. “Brewbudz is our way of providing consumers with a natural, safe and chemical free way to consume cannabis’ natural compounds, combined with an everyday behavior — coffee/tea drinking — that is both socially acceptable and discreet.” Cannabiniers’ “first of its kind patent” meshes a completely compostable pod that works with all Keurig coffee brewers and a cannabinoid extraction process “that allows the consumer to benefit from the complete profile of the cannabis flower, in a healthy and
discreet manner.” Brewbudz isn’t just soothing to your soul — it’s also eco-friendly and designed to fit well into any lifestyle. “Consumers can select from a variety of dosing strengths infused with either sativa cannabis to give them a pickup or indica to help them relax and sleep,” the company said in a press release. “Once brewed, Brewbudz cannabis infused beverage is virtually absent of cannabis odor and taste, while protecting and delivering the effects in a safe and natural way.” Brewbudz is now available in dispensaries located across Nevada, including Medizin, Blum, The Dispensary, Las Vegas ReLeaf, Inyo Fine Cannabis, Essence, The Source and Mynt. Availability in Colorado and California will soon follow, with additional state launches to be announced shortly thereafter, the company added.
Cannabis-infused drinks could be the new morning coffee and cigarette. PROVIDED

The 37-year-old “refused to back down or quit the affair,” according to a source. Rude. May we suggest that Garner seeks the ultimate revenge and find herself a rebound? Live a little, girl.
Just three months after Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner filed for divorce in April, not-assad Batman has a new, er, Lady Robin. Last week, People reported that the 44-yearold actor and “Saturday Night Live” producer Lindsay Shookus are officially an item. Apparently the two lovebirds have a bit of a history together. Multiple sources told Us Weekly that the two had an affair back in 2013, two years prior to Ben and Jen’s separation in 2015. And now we’ve learned that Garner knew about their illicit history, and confronted Shookus about it back in 2015. Apparently the “Dallas Buy-

No word from The Rock yet, or whether or not this is his doing, but at this point, having a wrestler-turnedactor-turned-politician wouldn’t be the worst thing to happen to our country. Especially seeing as our current presidency is akin to a poorly scripted reality show as is.
“Newlyweds” producer spills on Jessica Simpson
I don’t care about this Lena Dunham drama Have you heard? Lena Dunham has been involved in a light scandal concerning her pup, Lamby. The news coverage is endless, and I’m over here wondering: Why should we care about a lady and the dog she decided to give up after maybe reinventing his biography and history? After endless back and forth between Dunham via Instagram, BARC (the facility where she adopted Lamby) and the Zen Dog, where Dunham surrendered Lamby after four years of challenging behavior, the woman who
dreams, I don’t know — can’t stop talking about running for president. It appears, basically, that once y’all elected Donald Trump, Johnson had the epiphany that any old inexperienced person could run for the highest office in America. Now, we’re getting an itty bit closer to the real thing. The Hill reports that campaign committee “Run the Rock 2020” filed on Johnson’s behalf to draft him for the 2020 election. The form was
adopted Lamby took her own turn to speak out. She confirmed, of course, that Lamby is “living a great life!” And “showing tremendous progress!” Here’s the thing: Why are we talking about this at all? Dunham definitely tends to be an easy target — what, with her endless bevy of ignorant comments and continuing to act like race isn’t really a thing — but damn, over this dog who is just trying to mind his business and live his new life? Let Lamby live, y’all. Leave Lamby alone!
While mostly it’s funny to think of either Jessica Simpson or Nick Lachey as relevant these days, a producer of the long gone MTV series “The Newlyweds” is going around exposing supposed secrets. It only took 12 years! Sue Kolinsky, who worked on the series all three seasons, said she maybe thinks Simpson wasn’t just acting like a dumb blonde. “There were times when we were like, ‘Hmm, does she really not know what this means?’” she said. “I truly
believe the whole ‘chicken and fish’ situation was accurate. She really did not know.
A tale as old as time. Really, it’s so old.
There was a scene where there was a dead mouse by their pool and it had been dead for a while. Nick said, ‘iIt’s in rigor mortis’ and Jessica said, ‘Riga-what?’ I truly believe she didn’t know what that meant.” Oh, Jessica. You sweet summer child. Anyway, the two have probably forgotten they were ever married, so we can go back to pretending “Newlyweds” never even existed.

Hanging at MoMA with Abbi Jacobson KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn
kate.mooney@metro.us
Like her “Broad City alter-ego, Abbi Jacobson also loves to draw. Before co-creating and co-starring in “Broad City, the 33-year-old aspired to a career in art. The Pennsylvania native comes from a family of artists and attended the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) before catching the acting bug. When she moved to NYC at the age of 23, it was with the goal of “juggling these impossible careers of both comedy and art. Ten years later, Jacobson is obviously better known for comedy, but she hasn’t abandoned her visual side. Last fall, she published “Carry This Book, an illustrated

She returns to the art world with her podcast, “A Piece of Work, a 10-part collaboration with WNYC and MoMA which debuted Monday.
It makes art more accessible
The culture around fine art can be intimidating, and Jacobson gets that. “Sometimes when people go into museums, they see all these things on the walls and they’re like, ‘What am I supposed to get out of this? Andrea Savage on redefining the sitcom mom With her fun and raunchy new series, “I’m Sorry.” RACHAEL VAUGHAN CLEMMONS @rachaelclemz
rachael.clemmons@metro.us
When Andrea Savage created “I’m Sorry,” she took inspiration from comedies that deal with the realities of everyday life, like “Master of None” and “Louie.” But she was looking to add a little something to it. “I wanted to do a pure comedy,” says the writer and “Veep” actress over the phone. “It shows a couple that actually likes each other and gets a kick out of each other, because you don’t see that. Everyone’s miserable on TV.” So what does a nonmiserable television series look like? With “I’m Sorry,” it’s a decidedly light and raunchy take on your standard sitcom. The series, premiering July 12 on TruTV, follows a semifictionalized Savage in

her day-to-day life in Los Angeles — from coffee sessions with her writing partner to cringe-worthy brunches with her family. And it showcases the 44-year-old alongside an all-star comedy cast that includes Judy Greer and Jason Mantzoukas.
Savage, who got her start by performing in musical theater, caught the comedy bug later than most. “I wish I would have been exposed to improv groups in high school or college,” she says. While studying political science at Cornell, she
took an acting class — where s h e met future “SNL” a l u m Chris Parnell — and

he persuaded her to join famed improv troupe the Groundlings. And the rest, as they say, is history. Fast-forward a couple of decades, and Savage is a comedy veteran of both television (“Episodes” and “iZombie) and film (“Step Brothers,” “Sleeping With Other People”). And she’s made some famous friends along the way. Heavyweights like Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and guys behind the Lonely Island have roles behind the camera on “I’m Sorry.” “That’s the great thing about c o m edy,” s a y s Savage. “ W e all do each other’s stuff. We’re a community.” Star power aside, “I’m Sorry” explores the life
outside of your typical sitcom mom — and blasts it to pieces. “I wanted to write a nuanced multidimensional woman who is 40 and who happens to be a mom — but that isn’t the only defining thing about her,” she continues. “I don’t ever take the piss out of anyone but myself.” Fret not, though: “I’m Sorry” may have its moments of nuance, it’s definitely not without its naughty sides. The third episode, for example, features a character who considers ice in her, uh, rear orifice foreplay. And it’s based on a real-life experience Savage had with a friend of a friend. “I was so fascinated,” she says in awe. “I had so many questions. What kind of ice was it? Was it crushed? Was it whole? How long does it take to melt?” she asks. “I hope people sort of know that [these outrageous situations] are real. If you know it’s real, then you’re like, ‘Well it’s not so crazy.’”

So no one told you life — after college — was gonna be this way. Cue the clapping. From “Friends” to “How I Met Your Mother,” shows about wacky pals living in New York has pretty much turned into its own genre over the years. Now, Netflix is putting a bourgeois spin on the sitcom trope with “Friends From College.” The show revolves Ethan and Lisa, a semisuccessful couple in their late 30s played by “Key & Peele” star Keegan-Michael Key and “HIMYM” alum Cobie Smulders, who reunite with their old Harvard buddies af-

ter moving back to the Big Apple. While the duo enjoys hanging out with their pals again, it’s not an easy situation to navigate for Ethan, as he’s been involved in a years-long affair with their mutual friend Sam (Annie Parisse), who’s also married. Not everyone will like Key’s adulterous Ethan, but he’s got that awkwardyet-kind Ross vibe that works well with Parisse’s Sam, who’s as fashionable as Jennifer Aniston’s

Rachel, with a bit more snark. Although Key and the main cast turn in solid performances, it’s the guest appearances that steal the show, especially Billy Eichner, who is hilarious as the deadpan Dr. Felix Forzenheim. “Friends From College” isn’t perfect, but it’s worthy of a weekend binge. Especially if you’re sick of watching “Friends” reruns. “Friends from College” premieres July 14 on Netflix.

THINGS TO DO
BalletX’s Summer Series runs through July 16. ALL PHOTOS ALEXANDER IZILIAEV
Elections provide fodder for world premiere ballets. BRANDON BAKER @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
Fresh off a three-piece spring series in April and May, BalletX returns July 12 with another trio of works — one, the crowdpleasing “Castrati, accompanied by two allnew world premieres. Both of those newbies, seemingly by sheer coincidence, target the palpable anxiety felt in today’s wonky political climate. “I have a few moments [in the ballet] that respond to how we all come together when it’s
such a chaotic time in history, says Jodie Gates, choreographer of “Beautiful Once, one of the two premieres. “It affects everybody every day. And certainly, I talk with the dancers at length about how this piece can help us work through some anxiety we all have. The 23-minute piece will feature 10 dancers, choreographed to — and heavily influenced by — chamber music composed by Ryan Lott. Gates describes it as abstract storytelling neatly tied up for the audience by its end scene, meant to capture the feeling of chaos during this time in history. All the while, of course, offering some feelings of hope. “Primarily, I really
wanted to touch on a sense of humanity and what we are all doing at the moment – a sense of urgency in our society and community, Gates says. “But also, the sense of humanity it takes for us to all feel part of an experience, and how I did that was really through the music. Ryan’s music is so poetic. People who’ve watched it say they feel something, and that comes from the dancers – the movement really seeps out of their pores. The second new piece, “Let mortal tongues awake, is a 20-minute piece choreographed by BalletX co-founder Matthew Neenan. It’s similarly inspired by the “stir of world elections, Neenan notes, and takes on themes of authority. It’s also, he adds, more driven by movement than music. It is, to boot, created with The Prince Theater in mind — BalletX’s temporary home while the Wilma Theater undergoes renovations. “The theater itself, the way it’s designed — I wanted to utilize the theater’s two little balconies, says Neenan. “I’d love to have dancers up there. The inspiration came from the idea of imagining a king or queen standing over the crowd from the balconies. The production aims to play with that image. “Castrati, meanwhile, is a popular production that sports its own anxious feelings — only derived from the 16th through 18th-century practice of castrating prepubescent Spanish and Italian singers. The thought behind the practice: By castrating before puberty, the larynx does not undergo standard changes in males and breath capacity is significantly enhanced. “Castrati will be accompanied by two politcally-charged works.
19
While that practice is no longer legal, “Castrati explores the lives of these once-upon-a-time artists who maintained an unparalleled devotion to their craft with scars to show for it. The production, also landing around the 20-minute mark, is choreographed by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. Neenan explains that short-length pieces are not necessarily typical of summer dance productions – but then, neither are summer ballet productions at all. “Most choreographers are off right now, he reveals. “This is kind of their summer layoff period – it’s rare there’s a July program in any ballet company unless it’s a summer festival, or a tour. But what’s nice about the summer series is it sells out quickly because there’s not much competition going on. We usually warn people to get their tickets immediately. BalletX finishes its 201617 season with the summer series. It runs July 12-16 at The Prince Theater; tickets range from $27-$52.

A home for sale in Fairmount manages to have it all, and more. The four-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom house has enough space for a growing family or an at-home business. The large beautifully finished outdoor deck is the perfect space for dining or entertaining al fresco, and amenities have been remodeled to have the best of the best. Plus, the home at 2124 Mount Vernon St. has a built-in ball pit and rock climbing wall in one of the bedrooms. A tiled marble floor in the living room immediately presents a sophisticated and modern look. A curved staircase leads to the more cozy areas of the house, including the large updated kitchen complete
with a chalkboard wall for drawing or brainstorming. The large kitchen island provides more counter space for the chef de cuisine, or pull up a stool to make it a breakfast bar. The door outside the kitchen leads to the incredible deck that sprawls out over the open air garage. Wooden beams call for vintage looking bulbs or whimsical fairy lights hanging over happy visitors. The four bedrooms vary in size and layout, but one is perfect for kids or visiting little ones who need builtin entertainment. The adorable rock-climbing wall scales the wall of one of the bedrooms, and has a ball pit to help catch any (short) falls.
This home is as beautiful on the outside as it is on the inside.
As for the neighborhood, Fairmount has tons of bars, restaurants and parks to help keep everyone busy. And it’s conveniently located to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The home has the perfect balance of being in the middle of everything, while still feeling tucked away on a tree lined street. “It’s a wow feeling when you walk down the street,â€? says realtor Joe Herzog. “It’s a premier block in a popular neighborhood. Questions we have for Phillies at the season’s midway point
Just how bad are these Phillies, and how bad will they be down the stretch?
that “I’m ready” to play in the big leagues; the confidence is there, now it’s a matter of when not if. Unfortunately, the Phillies lean more conservative in their handling of prospects. That being said, it may just be too hard to keep Hoskins down in Triple-A for another month.
KYLE PHILLIPPI @Kyle_Phillippi sports@metro.us
What will Nick 1playing Williams’ time be? The highly-touted outfielder finally got his call-up to the big leagues a few weeks prior to the all-star break. In 10 games, he posted a .281 average with a homer. It was nothing to get too excited about, but he certainly didn’t look out of place. The question that remains for the second half will be what Williams’ usage is the rest of the way. For the fans’ sake, Williams should be an everyday guy along with fellow youngster, Aaron Altherr. The platoon should be with Odubel Herrera and Howie Kendrick (until his likely trade). It’s also nice to see Williams bat in the fifth spot, where he spent six of his 10 games, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him slide up to third in the order more often if he proves to be a guy who can get on base.
2
Can we expect a turnaround from Maikel Franco? A major disappointment in the first half was Franco’s performance. He sits at a .217 average and a .274 on-base percentage. That’s simply not good enough for a guy whose supposed to be a major producer in the lineup. He’s not off to a strong start in July, either, batting .200 in the nine games before the break. He’ll need to break out of that funk or else there will be talk about what to make of him moving forward;
how bad can 5thisJust thing get?
Aaron Nola has pitched like an ace in two starts before the All-Star break. Can he keep it up?
in fact, there’s already speculation he could be on the block come the trade deadline.
3keepWill Aaron Nola rising? To start, Nola opened 2-0 and looked to be finding his groove, but then came a frustrating May that saw him go 0-3 with a 5.63 ERA. He’s been a different pitcher since, though, especially in his last two starts. He went into the break with a 1.20 ERA and 17 strikeouts to just three walks in those final two outings. For a team where wins (and quality starts) are absent, Nola’s re-emergence is a welcomed sight. It’ll be a matter of if he can sustain that consistency, something he hasn’t quite done throughout his career.

This is a question fans hate to ask, but it’s looking more and more like this Phillies team is headed for the worst record in baseball as things don’t appear to be getting better anytime soon. Their 29 wins are the fewest in baseball with the next closest being San Francisco with 34. At the pace they’re going, the Phillies are flirting with 108-110 losses, which would come awfully close to their worst season ever when they lost 111 games in 1941.

Pair of goaltending prospects have sights set on Flyers No. 1 job Felix Sandstrom or Carter Hart could someday be a homegrown No. 1 goalie for the Flyers. ERIC GOLDSTEIN @EricEsponda sports@metro.us
Flyers general manager Ron Hextall locked up veteran goalies Michal Neuvirth and Brian Elliott for the next two years to serve as a bridge until one of the nine — yes nine — goalies in their system emerges as a potential and longterm No. 1 option. Two of the leading candidates, Felix Sandstrom and Carter Hart, were on the ice over the weekend at the Flyers Development Camp and weighed on the possible
future job openings. Sandstrom claims he is not thinking much about them. His intention is to perform at his best each time he straps on his pads and blocker. Hart said he has barely paid attention to it. He’s more concerned about living in and worrying about the present. Make no mistake, though. Each of the 19-year-old goalies has read the writing on the wall. “For sure, it’s motivation to keep working,” Sandstrom said. “I am going to do my best to be able to be here in a couple of years.” Hart plans on arriving even sooner. “Coming into camp, the goal is stand out and make the [Flyers] this fall,” he said. “It doesn’t
happen often but it’s something I really want and something I am working really hard for. I’m looking forward to the opportunity.” Anthony Stolarz was impressive in four starts last season as a rookie for the Flyers, but the organization is not as high on him as they are on Hart and Sandstrom. Last season, Sandstrom posted a 2.25 goals against average (GAA) and .908 save percentage in the Swedish Hockey League and was named best goaltender at the World Junior Championships. “It was a good season and good experiences to play at World Juniors and in the [SHL] playoffs,” said Sandstrom, a third-round pick in 2015. “I think it’s some-

thing I can bring with me into next season.” In 54 games with the Everett Silvertips, Hart finished with a 1.99 GAA, .927 save percentage and was named the Western Hockey League’s top goalie. After watching Ivan Provorov and Travis Konecny make the team last year as 19-year-olds, both goalies know the

Flyers aren’t afraid to commit to young players. “If you have the talent, skill and work ethic, it doesn’t really matter how old you are,” Hart, a second-round pick in 2015, said. “You can win a job.” That is what Sandstrom has in mind down the road. Despite his age, inexperience and

two seasoned goalies signed for a combined $5 million over the next two seasons in front of him, it is exactly what Hart will attempt to accomplish this fall. “I am really just looking at this summer and getting better,” he said. “My goal, though, is to make the Flyers, and that is what I am working for.”

Aries Make changes to the way you handle your job, responsibilities and the people you care about most. Don’t let anger step in and take control. Offer positive alternatives.
Libra Question anything that appears to be sketchy or doesn’t add up. It’s important to stay on top of the facts and to be precise when dealing with uncertainty or instability.
Taurus If you want to make changes, you are best off doing so secretively. Once you have everything in place and running functionally, the choices you made will be well received.
Scorpio Make a point to take better care of your health. Avoid indulgence, and strive to work and play equally hard. Balance will be the key to lowering stress.
Gemini Personal improvements will help boost your confidence and give you the wherewithal to pursue your goals. Update your skills and new possibilities will develop.
Sagittarius Don’t count on the information that someone offers. You’ll be railroaded into a situation that isn’t in your best interest. Choose intelligence over bravado.
Cancer A bargain isn’t worth it if you don’t have enough cash. Don’t waste money on things you don’t need. Emotionally fueled spending will result in added stress.
Capricorn Don’t walk away from someone or something just because you are shy or fear the unfamiliar. The knowledge and experience you gain will motivate you.
Leo Go over any contracts and financial matters that need to be tidied up. Knowing where you stand will ease stress and give you a chance to start something new.
Aquarius Listen carefully when dealing with partners. Someone is likely to leave out pertinent information to avoid upsetting you. Ask pointed questions and make changes.
Virgo Use innovative methods to take care of demanding people or burdensome responsibilities. It’s how you approach others that will make a difference.
Pisces Emotions will surface that could easily cost you if you aren’t honest about your feelings or expectations with someone you deal with today. EUGENIA LAST
