The road to recreational marijuana legalization hasn’t been easy for pro-pot advocates in Boston. Celebrate Bastille Day on this side of the Atlantic Get ready for the French Cultural Center’s signature summer block party. CATHERINE PERLOFF

You don’t have to fly to France to party like a Parisian. Get hyped for the French Cultural Center’s biggest fête of the year, the July 14 celebration of Bastille Day, France’s equivalent to the American Fourth of July. The 42nd annual Bastille Day celebration is a Frenchstyle block party, complete with food, drinks, two live music acts and an expected 2,000 attendees. Marlborough Street will be blocked off between Berkeley and Clarendon streets in Boston’s Back Bay to accomodate the fun. Bostonians may know the celebration as one of the summer’s biggest par-

ties, but the event is just as much a celebration of the beginnings of French democracy, according to French Cultural Center Executive Director Barbara Bouquegneau. “France is where all those humanitarian ideas were generated from, all our great philosophers, what we call the ‘Lumières,’” she says. “On top of the celebration of July 14, which was the actual day the Bastille jail was raided, it has evolved for us into a celebration of our real values: liberty, equality, fraternity.” Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille during the French Revolution, when the people rose up against

the monarchy. Boston’s 2017 celebration seeks to capture that same spirit and energy. In partnership with World Music/CRASHarts, the event will feature two well-known French musicians, Daby Touré and Ben l’Oncle Soul. Touré is known for combining the musical styles of multiple countries and has performed with Peter Gabriel, Rihanna and Bob Geldof. Ben l’Oncle Soul has appeared on the French top album charts and plays a unique blend of pop, hip-hop, reggae and R&B, among other genres. Guests will not only hear French culture at

“We used to joke that this is the only block party where you can freely drink alcohol without the brown paper bag,” Bouquegneau says of the event’s ample adult beverage opportunities. However, the celebration is still family-friendly. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., there will be a children’s corner offering crafts and face-painting. Additionally, a VIP reception will be held in the French Cultural Center’s garden, complete with an open bar, hors d’oeuvres, desserts and free access to the street festival. Ultimately, organizers hope to use the event as a means to celebrate French culture and Fran-

co-American relations. “It’s about promoting good cultural relations between the United States and France,” says Jessica Nussenbaum, cultural programs manager. “Itstarted just to celebrate these values.” Bouquegneau notes that many Francophone communities are wellrepresented in Boston, and the French influence on the city is on public display. “If you take a historical tour and look at monuments, you see so many streets with French names,” she says. “It’s ever-present in Boston in remembrance of all the historical contributions that are French.”

After recreational marijuana possession and use was legalized last December, people have been able to blaze freely and grow small amounts of their own ganja as well. Legislation on retail cannabis sale, however, does not project licensed dispensary openings until at least July 2018. But as they say, the early bird gets the worm. Or perhaps, the early wake and baker. CannaCon Boston is the “nation’s largest business to business cannabis trade show, according to partner and general manager Dave Mesford. So, putting all the marijuana puns aside, this expo event focuses on the myriad of economic opportunities within emerging cannabis markets like Massachusetts and New England. “We focus heavily on education and all things business, says Mesford. “The interesting thing about this industry is that much of it is several times removed from the actual cannabis. For example, consider packaging. The product, especially now post-legalization and regulated,

must be provided in standardized containers — a huge economic endeavor that focuses completely on plastic capsules.“Then you have ideas like child safety, labelling, and automation, adds Mesford. And this is just one example of how huge amounts of money circulate in this industry before a consumer even has a chance to pack a bowl or roll a joint. However, that’s not to say that consumers aren’t encouraged to attend CannaCon. “Anybody endeavoring to enter into the Massachusetts cannabis market has so much to learn here, says Mesford. Speakers will address topics covering home cultivation to overcoming misinformation and championing marijuana’s medicinal properties. One lecture will

feature the “Travelling Hemp Museum and free, take-home hemp samples. Those interested in entrepreneurial tips can attend the CannaCon Pre-Conference Workshop hosted by Clover Leaf University. A nationally accredited institution, Clover Leaf will offer a comprehensive guide to starting up a cannabis company with information on business models and legislative restrictions. “They’ll run through every aspect of running a business, for cannabis and even other realms, explains Mesford. A “Shark Tank-style investor pitch session called “InCannaVest will also be going on for those who think they have the next-best marijuana product or service. According to organizers, 5,000 to 10,0000 people are expected to be in attendance throughout the weekend. “Anyone wanting to get into the industry should come, regardless of where the administration goes, suggests Mesford. “It’s not scary — come down and watch people do business.

Keegan-Michael Key: Obama’s anger translator, Luther, wouldn’t survive Trump’s presidency The “Key & Peele” star opens up about the right to strike and his new Netflix series “Friends From College.” MATT JUUL

Things get complicated for Keegan-Michael Key in “Friends From College.” BARBARA NITKE / NETFLIX

Life after graduation gets messy for KeeganMichael Key and the cast of Netflix’s new comedy “Friends from College.” The “Key & Peele” star plays a Harvardeducated author named Ethan who’s struggling to keep his career and marriage together after moving back to New York City with his wife,

Lisa, played by Cobie Smulders. While the couple finds some comfort being surrounded by their old pals again, things get complicated thanks to Ethan’s affair with their mutual friend Sam (Annie Parisse). “They’re trying so hard to stop, [but] they have this kind of animal magnetism to each

other,” says the 46-yearold actor. Here’s what else Key had to say about the show, filming in Cambridge and more. Did you and your actual college friends have any weird rituals or games like Ethan and his pals? We would go places and then pretend to speak in a foreign language.

The gang’s all here. DAVID LEE / NETFLIX

We’d make up a foreign language and we would speak in a foreign language that sounded like, I guess Czechoslovakian, something kind of Eastern European. We would just try to see if we could make people at restaurants murmur about us. Like, “That guy’s black and that girl’s white. They’re

speaking a different language. Are they from the Netherlands? Where are they from?” You wanted to see if you could make other people talk about you. That’s what theater nerds do when they go to college. You filmed a few scenes at Harvard. How’d you like Cambridge?

Nothing says summer like heading to the beach and dipping your toes in the sand, but sometimes the crowds at beaches near Boston can be anything but relaxing. Here’s a roundup of our favorite secret beaches sure to help you ditch the crowds this summer.

Bound Brook Island Beach — Wellfleet This is the kind of place the locals like to keep all to themselves. Situated at the end of a mile-long narrow dirt road, you’ll find a small parking lot that holds fewer than a dozen cars. Climb uphill about 200 yards and you’ve made it to the Bound Brook Island Beach. Truly a rarity on Cape Cod, other beachgoers will be few and far between on this remote beach. It’s about a two-hour drive from Boston, but you’ll save tons of time if you hop on the Provincetown ferry instead.

Beach at Houghton’s

Pond — Milton

Who said you needed to head to the coast to find a great beach? Probably your inner New Englander, but fear not, Houghton’s Pond offers sandy beaches and clear (fresh) waters a mere 15 miles from downtown Boston. This familyfriendly swimming hole comes equipped with lifeguards, changing areas and ample parking, which we know is a big deal for you Bostonians. And did we mention it’s free? It’s about a 30-minute drive from Boston, depending on traffic.

Wingaersheek Beach — Gloucester If you’re looking for your little slice of the tropics in Massachusetts, Wingaersheek is the beach for you. Framed by large flat rocks and with incredibly warm, almost crystal-clear waters, heading to Wingaesheek Beach is like stepping through a portal into the tropics. Just remember, there aren’t any public restrooms here. You might

find a port-a-potty, but just be prepared. It’s about a 45-minute drive from Boston.

Wessagusset Beach — Weymouth A hidden gem in Weymouth, just south of Boston lies Wessagusset Beach. While you won’t find much in the way of amenities here, that also means you won’t be running into too many people on your coastal retreat. Wessagusset Beach is best at low tide and boasts beautiful sunset views. It’s about a 30-minute drive from downtown.

Yirrell Beach — Winthrop If you don’t mind a few meandering planes flying overhead, Yirrell Beach is a great, local option to go stick your toes in the sand. Situated just before Deer Island, the area boasts a relatively expansive and sandy beach a mere eight miles from downtown. It will take about 20 minutes to drive there.

Caesar (Andy Serkis) hates the future in “War for the Planet of the Apes” ALL PHOTOS TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX

“War for the Planet of the Apes” Director: Matt Reeves Stars: Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson Rating: PG-13 The original “Planet of the Apes” movies were meant for kids, but they weren’t dumb. They were arguably the most political and radical Hollywood product of the era, steeped in Civil Rights lingo and imagery. The fourth one, “Conquest,” even ended with what was effectively a slave revolt. Amazingly, the rebooted series isn’t as ostentatiously woke. These films are dour and serious and long, but not even the new “War for the Planet of the Apes” speaks directly to our times the way the originals threw in nods to Vietnam and Malcolm X. Then again, it’s very 2017 in one way: This is a franchise in which humans are so belligerent and dumb the whole species might as well eat it. When last we left the new “Apes” saga, human-smart ape relations had escalated. It’s even worse by the time “War” picks up. Apart from a mysteriously mute little girl (Amiah Miller), there are no token nice humans. Nearly the only homo sapiens we see are soldiers, led by Woody Harrelson’s “Colonel.” He knows humans, plagued with a now-mutating virus, are on the way out, and he’ll be damned if some damn dirty apes are going to take our place. He tries to kill the chimp who started the revolution, Andy Serkis’ mo-capped

Caesar. Instead, he kills his wife and son by accident. Title aside, there’s very little war in “War.” After a grimy battle opener, it segues into a dirty revenge Western, only to settle into a POW-camp drama. The normally focused Caesar loses himself to imploding grief, abandoning his tribe for a mission to find and execute the Colonel with extreme prejudice. There’s a fair amount of “Apocalypse Now” running through “War,” including with the Colonel, who’s basically Kurtz, only less charming. But these aren’t empty fanboyish shout-outs, as in another recent simian-led blockbuster, “Kong: Skull Island.” That film openly quoted famous shots; returning series director Matt Reeves, who also helmed “Dawn,” doesn’t do that. He’s simply made a film that wants to be taken as seriously as the Coppola classic. Still, “Apocalypse Now” is definitely more fun. “War” is about as heavy as “Dawn.” Even the monkey mayhem is po-faced. The ultra-mega-seriousness isn’t always matched by the writing; most of the characters are thin, even poor Caesar, whose need for vengeance eventually feels like a way to simply keep the plot going, not something dark bubbling beneath him. Still, it gets an A for effort, and far as this year’s downer-franchise entries go, it’s far less smug and more deeply-felt than “Logan” — even if some of us may pine for the days when films about revolutionary apes were fun as well as harrowing. Nurses at Tufts Medical Center on strike More than 1,000 nurses began picketing outside the main entrance of Tufts Medical Center Wednesday morning, kicking off the first strike at a major Boston hospital in about 30 years. The strike began after a last-ditch effort at negotiations on Tuesday failed to find agreement between Tufts Medical Center and the Massachusetts Nurses Association, the union representing the nurses. The union is seeking better staffing “to ensure nurses have more time to spend with their patients, a competitive salary and to enhance their pension benefit. The union argues that Tufts nurses are the lowest paid in the city and have the worst pension benefits in Boston. The strike began Wednesday at 7 a.m. and is intended to go until 6:59 a.m. on Thursday, making it a one-day strike, the union said.

However, Tufts will reportedly bar the nurses from returning to work for an additional four days. The medical center — which has seen multiple financial losses in recent fiscal years — said that it has more than 320 experienced nurses coming in during the strike. “We will deliver the same exceptional care during the MNA strike that we always have at Tufts MC. #WeArePrepared, a tweet from the hospital’s account stated.

In a statement, a representative said that “The MNA had an opportunity to reach an agreement tonight; they instead chose to strike and have our nurses walk out on patients. “ “We went to the table today and offered a path forward that met the needs of our nurses, the statement continued. “The union recycled their retirement proposal that is risky for nurses and expensive for the hospital. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT

MBTA to share rider etiquette reminders through the use of GIFs In a digital world where everyone on the T is probably consumed by their cellphone for their entire trip, how will riders be reminded not to wear bulky backpacks on the train or to give up their seat to someone who needs it? Through GIFs, of course. The MBTA and its advertising partner, Outfront Media, teamed up with Giphy to launch a campaign to bring riders public service announcements through the easyto-understand, animated world of GIFs. The PSAs use Giphy, a GIF search engine, to integrate the GIFs into ON Smart Liveboards, which are digital panels that can display videos and are positioned throughout Boston transit stations. “We’re thrilled that our platform is empowering the MBTA and Giphy to distribute GIF-based content in a new context, said Andy Sriubas of Outfront Media in a state-

ment. “We hope MBTA riders will appreciate the fun, lighthearted way that we are sharing these messages. These messages will focus mostly on reminders about rider etiquette and safety awareness. In one PSA, the screen plays a GIF of a dog crossing a street while wearing a backpack full of puppies. “Remove your backpack, the screen says above the GIF. Below, “Backpacks take up space and hit people — please

take them off when riding the trainâ€? Another announcement addresses the issue colloquially known as “manspreading,â€? when a rider (usually male) spreads his legs widely while sitting, thus taking up someone else’s space. The GIF for that one? A (perhaps overweight) cat belly-up on a chair, its rear legs spread wide. “Only take the seats you need,â€? the screen reads. Yet another reminder urges commuters on the platform to “Stand aside for a faster rideâ€? and features a GIF of puppies crowded in a dog bed, all rushing to get out at once. â€œWorking with our advertising contractor, we are pleased to roll out these unique public service messages that address frequent comments from our customers,â€? Steve Poftak, interim MBTA general manager, said in a statement. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT

Plan ahead for Zeagrahm’s May 2018 departure of Hokkaido, “Japan’s Wild Island.” This 16-day voyage circumnavigates Japan’s northernmost main island of Hokkaido. You’ll visit some of the most beautiful parts of the country, like the wildflower fields of Rebun Island. In between nature explorations you’ll visit a few morning markets, like the ones at Abashiri and Hakodate, and you’ll explore bustling cities like Otaru and Sapporo.

Sailing around Newfoundland, Adventure Canada promises a voyage where you’ll spy whales breaching, seabirds breeding, and maybe even majestic icebergs. You’ll travel with onboard naturalists who will share their deep knowledge of the region with you. You’ll visit the only Mi’kmaq village in Newfoundland and view a reconstructed Viking settlement (and UNESCO World Heritage Site) that dates to 1000 AD, at L’Anse aux Meadows. Passengers will explore Gros Morne National Park and see the most remote areas of Newfoundland and Labrador in resplendent bloom.

The Boston Red Sox are in first place at the AllStar break. So maybe we should stop complaining about it. Everywhere I turn, somebody here in Boston is unhappy with something that’s happening with the Red Sox. Sometimes you’d have no idea they’re the first-place team in the AL East with the second-most wins in the American League. My advice? Enjoy it. Their ace, Chris Sale, got the start in Tuesday night’s All-Star Game in Miami, which also featured Mookie Betts and Craig Kimbrel. The Sox return from the break this weekend with a fourgame series against the second-place New York Yankees at Fenway. The Yankees entered the break tied with the Tampa Bay Rays for second place in the division, 3.5 games behind the Red Sox. First place is not a bad

place to be, if you’re Boston. Yet, I’m still hearing some complaints. Comes with the territory, I guess. At the risk of sounding spoiled, we expect the Red Sox to make the playoffs every year. And not just get there, but win when they do. Last year, they won the division and then got swept by the Cleveland Indians in the ALDS. With the addition of Sale, the expectations this year are, at the very least, to win a playoff series and advance to the ALCS. If the postseason began today, the Red Sox would play the Indians once again in the ALDS. Sale’s dominance would certainly give that series

a different feel this time around. And if they could pull that off, it would set them up with an ALCS series against either the Astros, Yankees, Rays, or Twins. Point is, we can play the “if the playoffs began today” game because the Red Sox are right in the middle of it all. That’s a great place to be in mid-July. And while we expect them to be in this position, when they actually have success, as a 50-win team, it’s time to stop making it sound like they’re just barely staying alive. Sure, a lot of things have gone wrong this year. Some were expected, like the loss of David Ortiz. Others were not, like missing David Price for the first two months of the season, seeing reigning Cy Young winner Rick Porcello struggle the way he has, and continuing to wait for relievers

Carson Smith and Tyler Thornburg to get healthy. But wouldn’t all of that make the Red Sox’ firstplace status all the more impressive? It should. Instead, there’s always something. Either it’s the “need” for a new third baseman, Hanley Ramirez’s work ethic, Price vs the media, or second-guessing how the manager uses Kimbrel. And I’m sure I’m missing a complaint or two. But there always seems to be one, no matter how good things are going or end up being. Yeah, a power-hitting third baseman would be nice. A batting average higher than .261 for Ramirez would be great. It would be awesome if Price could ignore media criticism. And John Farrell isn’t a perfect manager. But something has to be said for a 50-win firstplace team at the All-Star break that now has the opportunity to add a piece or two at the July 31 trade deadline and get even better. What the Red Sox have been able to do thus far, given all their issues this season, is pretty damn impressive. It’s time we stop complaining about it. Sox, Yanks bringing the star power MLB will be counting on its best rivalry to bring the drama this weekend.

MATT BURKE

Much was made this past week about the decline of general interest in baseball. The slow pace of the game is one issue, another issue is that the sport just doesn’t have any recognizable stars anymore. In May, ESPN put out a piece on the top 100 most famous athletes

in the world and not a single current MLB player made the cut. MLB execs surely hope that changes in the coming years, and if it does change it will likely be due to key members of the No. 1 rivalry in North American sports — the Red Sox and Yankees.

METRO.US WEEKEND, JULY 13-16, 2017

The Sox and Yanks will renew their rivalry this weekend at Fenway in a four-game series that could make or break each team’s second half.

Saturday Sale

Chicago is a big market for sure, but Sale’s star has never shined like it did this week in Miami when he was the American League starter in the MLB All-Star game as a member of one of the premier franchises in all of baseball in the Red Sox. Sale did not allow a run to the National League’s best in two innings of work Tuesday night. He allowed three hits and struck out two batters on 28 pitches. Sale is slated to start for the Red Sox on Saturday (4:05 p.m., FS1) in what will be the biggest game he’s played in a Boston uniform since opening day. The lanky lefty has faced the Yankees once so far this season and he turned in a very strong effort despite a Sox loss. Sale went eight in-

WKND nings on April 27, giving up two earned runs on eight hits while striking out 10 Yankees batters. Sale received literally zero run support as the Sox lost, 3-0.

All Rise!

Yankees fans have been insufferable with the Aaron Judge puns this season. The Yankee Stadium “bleacher creatures dress in old-timey wigs with judge’s robes and hold up signs like, “All Rise! whenever the newest Yankee hero comes to the plate. As tough as it is to take for Red Sox fans, however, the attention is well-deserved. Judge leads the entire Major Leagues in home runs with 30 on the year. The presumed rookie of the year also has 66 RBIs on the season, good for second in MLB behind Seattle’s Nelson Cruz. Judge is the new face of the Yankees, if not the face of baseball, so Boston fans now have a new villain to boo.

It’s t’s Mookie time Itt would be nice if some ome “Mook-ie’s Bet-ter! et-ter! chants broke roke out this weekend at Fenway when Judge is at the plate late (ala the old “Nomar’s Nomar’s better days),

“He might be the best defensive right fielder in the game.

He’s been good, but he’s not really in the MVP conversation right now. With a .272 batting average, 16 home runs and 53 RBIs at the break, Sox fans should be counting on a monster second half from the right fielder. He’s shown signs that he’s ready to go on a tear recently as he belted two home runs and had eight RBIs total in Toronto on

John Farrell, on Mookie Betts

but ut this new rivalry ivalry is in its ts infancy. Itt will come with time. Truth be told, old, Betts hasn’t been een nearly as good ood as Judge udge this season. eason.
