President Donald Trump said he did not fault his son Donald Trump Jr. for meeting with a Russian lawyer during the 2016 presidential election campaign and he was unaware of the meeting until a few days ago. Asked if he knew that his son was meeting with lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya in June last year, the president told Reuters in a White House interview: “No, that I didn’t know until a couple of

days ago when I heard about this.” Trump Jr. eagerly agreed to meet the woman he was told was a Russian government lawyer who might have damaging information about Democratic rival Hillary Clinton as part of Moscow’s official support for his father’s campaign, according to emails the son released.

One of the biggest icebergs on record has broken away from Antarctica, scientists said, creating an extra hazard for ships around the continent as it breaks up. The one trillion ton iceberg, measuring 5,800 square km, calved away from the Larsen C Ice Shelf in Antarctica sometime between July 10 and 12, said scientists at the University of Swansea and the British Antarctic Survey. The iceberg, which is

roughly the size of the U.S. state of Delaware or the Indonesian island of Bali, has been close to breaking off for a few months. Throughout the Antarctic winter, scientists monitored the progress of the rift in the ice shelf using the European Space Agency satellites. The ice will add to risks for ships now it has broken off. The peninsula is outside major trade routes but the main destination for cruise ships visiting from South America.

U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, the No. 3 Republican leader in the U.S. House of Representatives who was shot and wounded last month, is no longer under intensive care although he remains in serious condition, according to a source familiar with the lawmaker’s status. Scalise had been readmitted to MedStar Washington Hospital Center’s intensive care unit over concerns about an infection fol-

lowing surgery. He is still being treated for the infections, according to the source. The Louisiana Republican was among a group of Republican lawmakers attacked June 14 just outside Washington when a gunman opened fire on them while they were practicing for an annual charity baseball game.

FIRMS PROTEST CHANGES TO NET NEUTRALITY RULES

5

Facebook, Twitter, Alphabet Inc. and dozens of other major technology companies are participating in an online protest to oppose proposed changes to U.S. net neutrality rules that prohibit broadband providers from giving or selling access to certain internet services over others. In support of the “InternetWide Day of Action to Save Net Neutrality,” more than 80,000 websites are displaying alerts, ads and short videos to urge the

public to oppose the overturn of the landmark 2015 net neutrality rules. Net neutrality is a broad principle that prohibits broadband providers from giving or selling access to speedy internet, essentially a “fast lane,” to certain internet services over others. The rule was implemented by the Obama administration in 2015. The changes are being proposed by the head of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, Ajit Pai, appointed by President Donald Trump.

TRANSIT RIDERS MAY NEVER LIVE TO SEE HUDSON TUNNELS COMPLETED Release of the Federal Rail Road Administration’s draft Environmental Impact Statement confirms continuing increases in total project cost of the Gateway Tunnel Project, which is a plan to expand and renovate the

train tracks under the Hudson River connecting New York’s Penn Station to New Jersey. Two years ago, the estimated cost grew by $3.9 billion from $20 billion to $23.9 billion. Today, the new cost estimate has grown

another $5.2 billion from $23.9 billion to $29.1 billion. This most recent increase is based on the estimated cost for both the new tunnel and rehabilitated old tunnel, which has grown from $8.7 billion to $12.9 billion.

President Trump’s proposed new budget confirms that there is no legal federal commitment to fund the Gateway Tunnel project. Recent news that the Gateway Development Corporation is looking for private develop-

ers to help pay for the $29.1 billion new Hudson River Gateway Tunnel as part of a joint public/private partnership is no surprise. It confirms that the proposed three-way federal/New Jersey/New York $29.1 billion funding package is primarily verbal commitments and wishful thinking. Two years later, it is still not real. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey allocation of $2.7 billion to help finance the Gateway Tunnel is just initial seed money. These dollars will be used toward debt service payments against a possible future federal Railroad Rehabilitation and Improvement Financing loan to the Gateway Development Corporation for this project. It has yet to be approved and will have to be paid back. Without real financial resources from not only Washington, but also New York and New Jersey, how will the Gateway Tunnel be paid for? A project can’t be financed by just borrowing alone. Language contained within the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act (FAST) affording Amtrak

the ability to use some of the $200 to $400 million in operating surplus profit it makes on the Northeast Corridor toward the new Hudson River Tunnel is not assured. This still needs future approval by Congress, and Amtrak still requires billions to fully implement real high-speed rail on the Northeast Corridor between Washington and Boston. On top of that, nobody knows how much emergency repairs over the next 18 months at Penn Station will cost. This doesn’t include billions more for routine repair, safety, fleet equipment replacement and upgrades to bridges, stations and the East River tunnels. The MTA, Amtrak, NJ Transit and the Port Authority of NY and NJ all need billions more in coming years, just to reach a state of good repair. Transit riders may never see the Gateway Tunnel completed in their lifetime.

OPEN HOUSE

If one of President Donald Trump’s personal helicopters was involved in a minor accident in New York City and no one knew, did it still happen? According to a report in Page Six, yes. A Trump Organization chopper was involved in a minor crash

at the West Side Heliport in Manhattan on June 15. The aircraft’s tail rotor hit a fence as it was landing, and photos obtained by Page Six appeared to show that the rotor was snapped off upon impact. The helicopter was completely grounded as a result of the damage and taken for repairs — but not before its “Trump” logo was reportedly obscured with tape, something a source told Page Six was “the first concern.” The anonymous witness added that the chopper had a “bad landing,” and no injuries appear to have been

reported. President Trump is required to travel on Air Force One and Marine One, not his personal fleet, which includes two planes and three helicopters. While it is unknown who was using the chopper on June 15, first daughter/adviser Ivanka Trump and her husband and fellow presidential adviser Jared Kushner, were said to have been on board as his children still use Trump Organization aircrafts when not traveling with their father. Trump’s team denied the power couple was involved.

New York City will hold its first professional auto race within the five boroughs this month — and that’s not even the most remarkable thing about the NYC ePrix coming to Brooklyn July 15-16. “Our cars are entire-

ly, 100 percent electric, which allows them to generate the minimum amount of noise,” says Mike Hopper, adviser to the Formula E racing series, whose cars and name resemble at the world’s most famous motorsport Formula 1 — but the comparison ends there. “Think of your regular electric vehicles and how they move like ghosts through the city. You’re gonna have race cars on the track in Red Hook doing 140 mph at the similar low amount of sound, which makes it the perfect series to race within the five boroughs of New York City.”

An ePrix racer celebrates on top of his vehicle.

METRO.US WEEKEND, JULY 13-16, 2017

Since debuting in Beijing in September 2014, the series has been about pioneering not just green automotive tech but every aspect of creating a more sustainable world, from recycling to clean fuels. While the racing itself will be plenty exciting, there are tons more reasons to check out the ePrix. See the city become a racetrack Bringing a racecourse to Brooklyn is a feat not likely to be attempted by any other race organization. “Formula E really looks for temporary locations close to city centers,” Hopper explains about constructing the 1.2-mile course through the streets and parking lots of the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. “We want to be close to public transportation to reinforce the sustainability of what we’re doing and what we’re encouraging our fans to do when it comes to electric technology.” Take a lap around the track No, you can’t get in the Formula E cars, but fans can bring any kind of self-powered or electric vehicle — “whether that’s a hoverboard or scooter,” says Hopper — on Saturday morning and do two laps around the racetrack. Just register online and see the race from the pros’ perspective. Enjoy a whole car-themed park When you’re not in your seat for qualifying and final races, the Allianz eVillage has plenty of fun off the track. Get in a simulator to drive as if you were a Formula

Drivers celebrate after an ePrix race.

NEWS E driver, see the latest electric vehicles from carmakers like Jaguar and an actual Formula E car, meet the racers at autograph sessions, hit up local food trucks and check out the Drone Racing League’s own contest around the 11 twists and turns of the NYC ePrix track. The race has its own gelato Before you get to the race, make a pit stop at Dolce Brooklyn, a gelato shop on Van Brundt Street selling the most unique flavor of the summer. “The family behind that is very big racing fans and is super excited for Formula E to be coming here,” says Hopper. To celebrate, they created a flavor of gelato using glycerine, the “so sustainable, you can drink it” fuel used to power the generators that charge Formula E cars. Cool! It’ll all disappear after this weekend “This might be the greatest pop-up event New York City has ever seen,” Hopper says, and it’s no exaggeration. Unlike other racing leagues, the NYC ePrix takes place on existing city roads in neighborhoods that need to go back to regular life after race day. After July 16, everything will be taken apart and moved to the next (and final) ePrix city of the season. “We’ve repaved major sections of road, we’ve been out in the neighborhood cleaning up and getting ready for our race fans,” says Hopper. “But once we are done, it goes back to being parking lots and roadway that service the cruise terminal.” For more, see page 26.

The NYC ePrix will be raced on existing city streets around the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal.

Where To Get Medical Marijuana in NYC WRITTEN BY

Amy Smith Do you or a friend or family member suffer from chronic pain? Are you fighting a battle with cancer, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or another debilitating illness? If so, medical marijuana might help alleviate your pain and provide comfort for effective treatment of debilitating symptoms and diseases. Cancer patients have long touted medical marijuana as a wonder drug for chemo-related nausea, and new research suggests that marijuana could also slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, delay the spread of cancer, relieve chronic

pain and Tourette’s syndrome, and ease symptoms of ADHD, depression, anxiety, arthritis and much more. A recent study out of the University of London even found THC and CBD (cannabidiol) to increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy drugs. Thanks to the Compassionate Care Act, tens of thousands of eligible New Yorkers are now able to gain access to life-sustaining medical marijuana products. Etain, LLC, New York’s only women-owned, family-run medical marijuana company, is a leading producer of clean and safe medical marijuana products for patients throughout the state. They lead with compassion, driven by the desire to help ease

pain so that patients can live their best lives. And now they’ve opened up a new location in Manhattan that will allow thousands of underserved patients to access essential medical marijuana products. Located at 142 E. 39th Street in Murray Hill, Etain’s newest dispensary is just the second facility to open in Manhattan, and they’re excited about the chance to serve you. “This new facility allows us to expand patient access and improve the quality of life for thousands of people by providing the highest quality medical marijuana treatments available,” says Hillary Peckham, Chief Operating Officer of Etain, LLC.

New York’s medical marijuana program has recently undergone a lot of changes to improve access for patients, streamline production, and increase choice. Most recently, chronic pain has been added as a qualifying condition; home delivery is now permitted, and nurse practitioners and physician assistants are now able to certify patients. If you’re a new patient looking to join the state program, you can begin by contacting your health practitioner to see if you have a condition that might be eligible for medical marijuana treatment. If so, and your practitioner is registered with the New York State Department of Health, they can issue you a

patient certification for your qualifying condition. New York recognizes a number of qualifying medical conditions, including cancer, HIV/ AIDS, Parkinson’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic pain and more. After registering online with the state, you’ll receive a Registry ID Card in the mail, at which point you can

purchase medical marijuana from a registered dispensary, like Etain. Whether you’re a current or prospective patient, or a doctor interested in joining the program, Etain encourages you to visit their website: www.etainhealth.com or call them at (914) 437-7898 to learn more about how you can access industry leading medical marijuana products.

METRO.US WEEKEND, JULY 13-16, 2017

THE FUN STARTS HERE

Sexiest ‘Game of Thrones’ scenes

wknd

If you’re a “Game of Thrones” fan, you know it’s an overtly sexy show. And we don’t mean the naked butts or the lady full-frontals — we’re talking about the murders, the furs, and the lots and lots of wine drinking. With the show returning this Sunday, July 16, it’s as good a time as any to explore the sexiest moments from everyone’s favorite fantasy show. Here are 10 of our absolute favorite, definitely sexy, scenes. RACHAEL VAUGHAN CLEMMONS That time certified hottie Oberyn Martell got his eyes poked out. Romance! Violence! Sweet revenge! What’s more sensual than a graphic closeup of someone getting his eyes squeezed out of his head? That’s right, nothing.

That time Jon Snow died. After the mutiny at the Wall, Jon Snow is stabbed to death, which is pretty rude. You can’t just go around stabbing your Lord Commander, ya dig? Anyway, it’s still pretty sexy because, murder! Also his hair still looks really good. When Jon Snow considered whether or not war was the answer and then was like, duh, of course it is. The moment Jon Snow tamed his curls into a man bun at the nape of his neck was probably the sexiest moment, in the entire “Game of Thrones” series. Also, it was basically Jon being like, “I’m a man now,” so he immediately went into a very bloody, very sexy battle!

This time Jon Snow brooded. Jon Snow is a wise sage and knows that the best and sexiest way to emote is through a delicious, moody pout. But also? Brooders gon’ brood.

That time Dany burned a bunch of people alive with her wrath, and also literal fire. Sometimes you just gotta burn the patriarchy down. Literally. There’s nothing sexier!

This time that Cersei drank wine. Cersei never just really drinks wine. She drinks wine and schemes about all the people she’s going to murder to get her way. It’s so sensual and evil!

The time that Tormund looked at Brienne like she was a grassfed rib-eye grilled to mediumrare perfection. When are these two going to make sweet love on a battlefield, with war waging all around them? Hopefully in season seven!

The time where Cersei wasted her wine, but as a means of torture. Because wine should never be wasted, unless it’s for sexy, sensual waterboarding. Or, we guess, wineboarding!

When Melisandre was like, oh yeah BTW I’m an old crone. Talk about body positivity! When Melisandre takes off her huge statement necklace and reveals she’s a withered old crone, it’s like — whoa! Look at that sexy withered old crone! It’s — how do you say? — straight-up magical.

When Ramsay got his face eaten off by dogs. Remember when Sansa watched her super-evil husband get ripped to pieces by his own canines? And how erotic and sultry it was? Hubba hubba — now that’s a romance for the ages!

Because nothing is more depressing than living in constant pain and... Not getting any REAL answers You might even be faced with getting knee replacement surgery. This is a scary thought. Am I right? 18 WKND Chimp revolutionary Caesar (played by a mo-capped Andy Serkis) is more grizzled than ever in “War for the Planet of the Apes.”

We imagine what it would be like to talk to the simian hero of “War for the Planet of the Apes.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

In 2011, the world met Caesar. He was a super-smart chimp and the hero of “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” the reboot of the original film series that began in 1968. Caesar started out nice, even though he was being used for drug testing, which accidentally made him intelligent, capable of speech and complex thought. There were some — notably James Franco’s scientist — who were kind to him. Most people weren’t, though, and when he was pushed too far, Caesar wound up leading his species in a revolution against their human oppressors. By the third in the

series, “War for the Planet of the Apes,” things have gotten even worse. Humanity has largely been wiped out by a supervirus; the survivors (including a psycho colonel played by Woody Harrelson) have decided to eradicate their simian neighbors, who will soon inherit the Earth. But Caesar won’t go down without a fight. We imagined what it wold be like to sit down with Caesar (embodied onscreen, as ever, by the great Andy Serkis, in mocap tech) to talk about human stupidity, climate change, Trump and what this very angry chimp does to relax. Why do you want to kill all humans? I don’t. You guys attacked us first. We’re just trying to find a safe space away from you jerks. Some of y’all are all right, though. I like James Franco. We wish his literary adaptations of difficult

Faulkner and Cormac McCarthy novels were better. Me, too. But he’s pretty great in “The Interview.” He made me laugh when I went to see “Why Him?” But back to genocide: Why do you think humans are so belligerent toward newly sentient apes? It’s just your nature. You’re an irrational species, mysteriously hellbent on your own destruction. You’re shortsighted. Did you read that terrifying New York piece about climate change — how you’re almost certainly going to wipe yourselves out because you’re too stupid to accept scientific warnings? We apes will probably suffer alongside you, because you’re raising the Earth’s temperature so high that by century’s end, if not sooner, the planet will be a microwave. After all, unlike

Hail, Caesar

you, we have fur. Good job, idiots.

Humans don’t come off very well in “War for the Planet of the Apes.” You don’t. The last movie had a few token decent ones, like Keri Russell. There aren’t any by this threequel. The only nice human is a little girl who can’t talk. She’s a victim of that supervirus that struck in “Rise.” It evolved and, instead of killing people, it turns their brains to mush, rendering them unable to form words or complex thoughts. Everyone who can talk is a stupid a—hole. Or just sheep who think that the villain — Woody Harrelson’s unnamed crazy Colonel —can alone solve everything. Yes, nice work making sure this dystopian sci-fi movie feels scarily relevant. What do you think of our own psycho leader?

Caesar in happier times with nice scientist James Franco, in 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.” ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX

Are you serious? Even I’m more eloquent than him, and I’m a talking chimp. If we do doom ourselves to extinction, what would you save of our species’ legacy? The wheel was a good invention. The discovery of fire was smart. Dams and electricity. Swearing is fun. And I have this inexplicable love of Arby’s. Arby’s? Seriously? No shame. I also really enjoy One Direction and Jethro Tull.

This has been a heavy conversation. What do you do to relax? I’d like to say I crack open a thick Russian novel and turn the pages till I pass out. But I can’t really read. I do bingewatch, though. Have you seen “Mozart in the Jungle”? The third season wasn’t as good as the second, but I dig it. I wish I could grow Gael Garcia Bernal’s hair. When humanity is no more, I’ll miss Gael Garcia Bernal’s hair on “Mozart in the Jungle” most of all.

“War for the Planet of the Apes” Director: Matt Reeves Stars: Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson Rating: PG-13 The original “Planet of the Apes” movies were meant for kids, but they weren’t dumb. They were arguably the most political and radical Hollywood product of the era, steeped in Civil Rights lingo and imagery. The fourth one, “Conquest,” even ended with what was effectively a slave revolt. Amazingly, the rebooted series isn’t as ostentatiously woke. These films are dour and serious and long, but not even

the new “War for the Planet of the Apes” speaks directly to our times the way the originals threw in nods to Vietnam and Malcolm X. Then again, it’s very 2017 in one way: This is a franchise in which humans are so belligerent and dumb the whole species might as well eat it. When last we left the new “Apes” saga, human-smart ape relations had escalated. It’s even worse by the time “War” picks up. Apart from a mysteriously mute little girl (Amiah Miller), there are no token nice humans. Nearly the only homo sapiens we see are soldiers, led by Woody Harrelson’s “Colonel.” He knows humans, plagued with a now-mutating virus, are on the way out, and

he’ll be damned if some damn dirty apes are going to take our place. He tries to kill the chimp who started the revolution, Andy Serkis’ mo-capped Caesar. Instead, he kills his wife and son by accident. Title aside, there’s very little war in “War.” After a grimy battle opener, it segues into a dirty revenge Western, only to settle into a POW-camp drama. The normally focused Caesar loses himself to imploding grief, abandoning his tribe for a mission to find and execute the Colonel with extreme prejudice. There’s a fair amount of “Apocalypse Now” running through “War,” including with the Colonel, who’s basically Kurtz, only less charming. But these aren’t empty fanboy-

Japan Cuts If you need a reminder of another way other nations are better than America, look no further than Japan Cuts. Now in its 11th year, the annual series surveys the country’s new cinema, all of it more thrilling and daring and wild than our own. Take Sion Sono’s “Antiporno.” At first it looks like some lesbian softcore, aimed at male horndogs. Then it’s revealed we’re watching a film set. From there, the movie keeps shape-shifting, pulling untold rugs out from under us, revealing a blunt and angry feminist tract against a patriarchal society that turns its women against each other. It’s one of many discoveries worth the adventure, from the LGBT saga “The Extremist’s Opera” to the teen drama “Yamato (California)” to the 1985 music doc “The Ondekoza.” July 13-23, Japan Society, 333 E. 47th St., $11-$14, japansociety.org MUSIC

There are just some places in the world that really weren’t meant for driving. Brooklyn, along with Manhattan, are certainly some of those destinations where rubber should not meet the road. Mitch Evans, a 23-yearold Formula E driver from New Zealand, learned that the hard way upon his first-ever visit to New York at the end of June. But this Saturday and Sunday in Red Hook, he and a select few will have an opportunity to rip up the streets of Brooklyn with the inaugural New York City ePrix. For the New Yorker that doesn’t know a thing about auto racing, which

is many, considering a large portion of the city doesn’t own a car or even have a driver’s license, Formula E is similar to Formula 1 racing, but the cars are electric. In just its third season of existence, Formula E will become the first racing championship to hold an event in New York. For Evans and the team he races for, which is owned by Jaguar, racing in New York provides another notch in the exciting belt that is both parties’ debut season in Formula E. “We’re so excited for it. As a driver, to be a part of it is very surreal,” Evans said. “Obviously, New York City is a massive sporting city with baseball and basketball. But to bring motorsport now into the equation is very special.” Evans has been driving some form of a motorized vehicle since he was 4 years old. From learning on go-karts to racing them at 6, the New Zealander graduated to actual cars at just 13 years old.

Course map of the inaugural New York City ePrix. JAGUAR LAND ROVER

By the time he was 16, he was racing professionally in New Zealand and Europe, the world’s premier locations for auto racing. He moved through the ranks of the Toyota Racing Series — where he became the youngest driver to win the New Zealand Grand Prix at just 16 in 2011— Formula 3, GP3 and GP2, which are divisions beneath the famed Formula 1. Like many young racers growing up, F1 was Evans’ goal originally. But then he discovered Formula E. “I had been trying to get to Formula 1 for the past few years and I didn’t really have many opportunities there so I was looking elsewhere, to be honest,” Evans said. “I was looking at the likes of Indy Car, Formula E, and I got the opportunity to test with Jaguar last year, and the test went well. I got offered to drive for this current season, which has been amazing.” It’s difficult to compare Formula E to Formula 1 just because of how unique this form of racing is. Instead of dealing with horsepower and fuel, Formula E cars run on batteries and the car’s power is measured in kilowatts. Instead of pitting for fuel, Formula E drivers switch cars when battery power is low. The differences don’t end there. “One of the biggest differences is obviously the drivetrain is a lot different. Obviously, the sound of the car is a lot different [it’s much quieter],” Evans

said. “In terms of a power output, we run around in qualifying at 200 kilowatt, which is around 270 horsepower and F1 is around 700 horsepower.” Even though there isn’t as much power, Evans and his peers aren’t exactly driving in Priuses. In fact, he admitted that Formula E cars might be even more difficult to drive compared to F1 cars. “We’ve had some F1 drivers come and drive Formula E and they found it very challenging. We have a lot of things to deal eal with behind the wheel,” l,” Evans said. “A lot of it is a bit fluid because there iss a lot of telemetries, which ch provides a lot of guessing ng work, so it’s really tough. h. From a driver technique ue point of view, the braking ng is very tough, very sensisitive to get right because of the regeneration that we use. The system uses the he rear axle and the braking ng to use energy to recoup up back into the battery. This his changes the braking a bit, it, and it’s been quite a lot to get used to.” All of this has to be monitored while zipping ng around a confined track ck that at times is pretty ty similar to New York City ty traffic. It requires increddibly quick thinking and nd physical endurance. The format of the races es — there will be one each ch on Saturday and Sunday ay — doesn’t allow much ch time for rest or relaxation, n, either. “It’s a one-day format, at, so we’re in the car at 8 a.m. doing two practice ce sessions, then we got qualalifying and then an hour ur

race,” Evans said. “And we have to do that twice over two days. Trust me, at the end of those two days, you’re pretty knackered.” He’s dealing with all this while being the youngest driver in Formula E on a brand-new team. Jaguar introduced their IType racecar this season, so the pair of rookies is continuing to find their way in the competition. “I think we’ve done a great job this year with the limited experience we’ve had and everything we’ve through,” Evans gone through, said. “To be honest, I don’t really think about being the youngest. I’ve always been one of the youngest. In ePrix, there’s really no different. When you get to a certain age, it doesn’t really matter who you’re up against. Everyone knows what they’re doing.” The playing field will be even more level considering the track in Brooklyn will be brand new to every driver t h i s weekend. Formula E

hadn’t disclosed about much the course to the 10 teams, which could provide Team

Jaguar an opportunity to improve on its ninth-place standing. “It’s very hard to prepare for a new circuit like we have in Brooklyn. In a traditional racing circuit, we have a lot of footage to look over and you roughly know what the track is,” Evans said. “But we don’t know what the track is going to be like here. We have just a sort of piece of paper layout. … We’re not exactly sure of the scale of what we’re up against. … Then we have to go tackle in in one day, which is tough.” New Yorkers will have an opportunity to watch Evans take on Brooklyn B ooklyn on Br two separate occasions. Saturday’s race will take place at 4 p.m. before Sunday’s finale at 1 p.m.

Mike and the Mad Dog ESPN documentary premieres Thursday The 30-for-30 series will provide an in-depth look at the most popular sports-talk radio show ever. JOE PANTORNO @JoePantorno

joseph.pantorno@metro.us

For countless New Yorkers, whether in the big city or on Long Island, the soundtrack to their afternoons throughout the 1990s and 2000s was WFAN’s “Mike and the Mad Dog. Featuring Mike Francesa and Chris “Mad Dog Russo, the sports-talk radio show revolutionized the sports media industry and accrued millions of fans across the country. On Thursday night, their 19-year run will be immortalized by ESPN’s popular 30-for-30 documentary series in a project simply titled “Mike and the Mad Dog, which airs at 8 p.m. “It’s a little awe-inspiring, Russo said. “They did a very good job with it and I know that I’m biased because I’m the subject matter, so I’m not going to hate it. Directed by Daniel Forer, the documentary takes an in-depth look

at the duo’s run from an unlikely tandem trying to find its footing in the business to radio juggernauts, whose radio show was simulcast across the country and even on television at the height of its power. Starting in 1989, Mike and the Mad Dog quickly rose to the top of the ratings in New York as they brought something the sports media industry had never seen before. “Sports radio changed the way towns and teams reacted to day-to-day life. It changed the way teams were covered and obviously changed media in a big way, Francesa said. “Sports radio was a big change for conventional media. We had an immediacy and we had an ability to be moment-tomoment, whether it was being at big events or breaking stories. Just by looking at their personalities, it was difficult to think the show would actually work. Francesa was an evenkeeled fountain of sports information while Russo provided a loud bravado that wore down his cohost at times. But it was that dichotomy that made the show such an entertaining experience and so popular among New Yorkers. “Mike was a lot funnier

than people thought and I knew a lot more about sports than what people though. We both are intellectual sports fans,â€? Russo revealed. “So I think in a lot ways, Mike and I are a lot alike. But the key to a good sports show is to love sports. Mike and I loved sports, loved the big games, loved breaking down the big game and loved the history of sports.â€? That didn’t mean there were bumps along the way. “When you work together for 19 years, you’re going to have four or five moments that will create issues that last a couple of months,â€? Russo said. “ We still had plenty of good times here where we were completely into it, liked each other’s company, had a lot to discuss ‌ so the fights were a little overrated and add juice to the documentary ‌ it contributes to the Mike and the Mad Dog mystique.â€? There was plenty to talk about during their reign as kings of New York sports radio as metropolitan-area teams combined for seven championships. But the Big Apple presented plenty of challenges. “New York would be the toughest place for it to survive and that’s what made it so special. New

York is a very different town than any other town as anyone knows,â€? Francesa said. “We have millions of people that don’t pay attention to anything no matter what the subject is. ‌ You’re talking about a city eight times the population of what most large cities are, so it’s so different ‌ and that makes it far more challenging. You have more competition.â€? While the two have continued their careers solo starting in 20008, Francesa with WFAN and Russo with Sirius XM, the

two will forever be linked as many will see Thursday night on ESPN. “It’s obviously an honor,â€? Francesa said. The two have done a handful of reunion shows over the years, but with Francesa’s contract with WFAN up in December, fans are hoping for the two to get back together. What did Mike and the Mad Dog have to say about that? “The only thing I can say to them is I don’t know what the future is going to hold for me. ‌ I’ve been

asked a lot about whether Mike and the Mad Dog could work, I don’t know what form that would take, Francesa said. “But what I have said is that I would listen to anything that’s brought my way and I have no qualms working with him. “I wouldn’t rule anything out, Russo said. “I think it’s going to be up to Mike than it is to me because I’m already at Sirius, I’m contracted to be at Sirius, I won’t be able to go out and do something else.

Aries Someone is likely to use deceptive tactics to get you to agree to changes that will affect your status or home life. Use your intelligence and do your own thing.

Libra Keep your business and personal associates separate. Your intentions may be good, but don’t get caught off guard or in the crossfire of an unstable situation.

Taurus Compromise will be necessary in partnership matters. If you strive for equality, it will help you maintain a good working relationship that allows you both to prosper.

Scorpio Avoid money problems by smartly handling your investments and overhead costs. Gain experience before you engage in costly endeavors.

Gemini Be careful whom you trust with personal information. Keep your passwords and possessions in a safe place. Use your charm to outwit anyone trying to cross you.

Sagittarius Question anyone offering you something and asking for nothing in return. Opt to play it safe and only take what you are willing to give back.

Cancer Try something different. Let your imagination wander and explore new possibilities. Go on a retreat or an adventure and see where it leads. Embrace new beginnings.

Capricorn Someone who is unlike the people you usually associate with will capture your interest and inspire you to consider new options.

Leo Keep your personal information, passwords and plans a secret. The less obvious you are, the easier it will be to get things done your way.

Aquarius Refuse to let anyone limit what you can do. Speak up and show discipline and the ability to get things done, regardless of what others do or say.

Virgo Emotional deception is present, along with ulterior motives. You’ll have trouble fitting in to unfamiliar situations. Step up and take charge.

Pisces Self-deception will get you into trouble. Realistically look at whatever situation you find yourself in. Physical alterations will not turn out the way you expect or want.
