New York state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman intends to sue the federal government if Republican lawmakers pass proposed legislation to overhaul the U.S. healthcare system, his office said on Monday. Schneiderman’s office said it has identified “multiple constitutional defects” with the Republican healthcare bills. The U.S. Senate is considering legislation to repeal parts of the

Affordable Care Act, Democratic former President Barack Obama’s signature legislative achievement, commonly known as Obamacare.

Minnesota officials were investigating how an Australian woman who called police for help over the weekend ended up shot and killed by one of the officers who responded in an alley near her house. Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges called for a probe of why officers were not using the body cameras they are equipped with during the incident that led to the death of Justine Damond, from Sydney,

around midnight Saturday. The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was investigating the shooting, in keeping with a new policy adopted in 2014, to avoid having the Minneapolis police department investigate itself, said Hodges, who described herself as “heartsick and deeply disturbed” by the shooting. “We don’t want to jeopardize the BCA investigation, or compromise its independence,” the mayor said.

A group representing major technology firms including Alphabet Inc. and Facebook Inc. urged the U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Monday to abandon plans to reverse the landmark 2015 rules barring internet service providers from blocking or slowing consumer access to web content. The Internet Association said in its filing with the FCC that dismantling the net neutrality rules “will create significant uncertainty in the market

and upset the careful balance that has led to the current virtuous circle of innovation in the broadband ecosystem.” The rollback will harm consumers, said the group, which also represents Amazon .com Inc., Microsoft Inc., Netflix Inc., Twitter Inc. and Snap Inc. New poll numbers show approval of President Donald Trump might be slipping. Though the 45th president has seen some of the lowest poll numbers of any modern president since he entered the Oval Office in January, Trump’s approval ratings have now hit an all-time low. Just 36 percent of Americans now say they approve of Trump’s performance – the lowest approval rating at the six-month mark of any president since modern polling began about 70 years ago, according to a new Washington Post/ ABC News poll. Trump’s approval rating has continued to erode over the past six months, and as his administration has failed to deliver on key campaign promises like his border wall, Muslim ban and healthcare repeal, so also goes his Republican base. Seventy percent of people surveyed in the Washington Post/ABC poll see Trump’s behavior as president as “unpresidential.” Just 24 percent described his behavior as “proper and fitting.” Among Republicans, 38 percent say Trump has acted unpresidential since

entering the office, and ABC’s polling analyst Gary Langer said dissatisfaction is growing among groups who strongly supported Trump in the 2016 election. Forty-eight percent of evangelical white Protestants and 55 percent of non-college-educated white men agreed that Trump’s behavior falls short of expectations. Trump’s actions both in person and on Twitter have long been a source of controversy, helping drive his approval ratings into the ground. Trump has claimed the media wants him to stop tweeting because they know it allows him to communicate directly with his base, but the fact is the president’s off-the-cuff and inflammatory Twitter style is driving major web traffic for many news organizations, and it’s his fellow Republican politicians that want him to stop. Trump has a message for them regardless of their political affiliation or agenda: “My use of social media is not Presidential — it’s MODERN DAY PRESIDENTIAL. Make America Great Again!” he tweeted on July 1. But he might be the only one with that opinion — the Post/ABC poll surveyed Americans on the heels of yet another shocking revelation in the investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to influence the 2016 election. Last week, the presi-

dent’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., admitted to meeting with a Russian lawyer whom he thought had evidence on thenDemocratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Under federal law, it’s illegal to receive political opposition research from foreign nationals. Twitter, it seems, is playing a major role in the growing negative perception around Trump. More than two-thirds – about 68 percent – of those surveyed in the Post/ABC poll said

Trump’s tweets are “inappropriate” or “insulting” (65 percent). Fifty-two percent said the tweets are “dangerous.” And just 21 percent called the tweets “refreshing,” which included 41 percent of selfidentified Republicans” But taking to Twitter on Monday, Trump seemed unfazed. “The ABC/Washington Post Poll, even though almost 40 [percent] is not bad at this time, was just about the most inaccurate poll around election time!” Actually, the polls were only about 3.5 percentage points off, but don’t expect Trump to listen — he also claims he won the popular vote.

The future of robotics means robots and humans will work side by side, experts say At TechCrunch Sessions: Robotics, hosted at MIT, those in the robotics world talk about the future of robots and humans together. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

kristin.toussaint@metro.us

Right now, roboticist Daniela Rus’ main aspiration is “to have a world where anyone can have a robot, where anyone can use a robot,” the MIT professor told TechCrunch Sessions: Robotics on Monday. Rus, who is also the director of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at MIT, said that though the world of robotics has certainly made recent advancements, her dream isn’t possible quite yet. “But just remember that only two decades ago, computation was a task reserved for an expert few, because computers were large, expensive and hard to use,” she said. “All that changed — now everyone uses computers — and I believe in the future, tasks will be equally changed by artificial intelligence.” What followed throughout the one-day robotics event organized by tech media company TechCrunch was the musings of many immersed in the robotics world as to where we are exactly in the timeline of robot advancement, and how that advancement will affect humans. Basically, we’re just at

the beginning of developing robots, and we’re still pretty far from many developments and from the sci-fi situation of robots taking over the world. In a talk about “robots, AI and humanity,” experts discussed the difficult goal of creating a “robot consciousness,” which would allow artificial intelligence to make ethical decisions and follow social cues. “If you look at theology, humans are born without common sense,” said Dr. David Barrett, a professor of mechanical engineering at Olin College. “It’s an acquired skill — a little bit is better than none, a little bit more is better than that, until you get to a level of confidence to perform a job and interact with people. Computers and AI are far from that baseline point.” Even though the tech behind robots still has a long way to go, people are already thinking about how robots and humans will coexist. If you fear robots taking over the world, or just all your job options, don’t worry. “I think there is sometimes a misconception that automation is all about a direct line march from all people to all robots,” said Clara Vu, VP of engineering at Veo Robotics. “Really, in many ways, humans and robots have very complementary strengths: Robots can be fast and strong, but humans have flexibility and judgment.” When people are looking for “robotic solutions” to problems, Vu said, they’re “looking for ways robot and humans can work together.”

Massachusetts’ top court on Monday ruled that a woman who had been fired for testing positive for marijuana that she had been legally prescribed under state law could sue her former employer for handicap discrimination. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court rejected the former employer’s argument that she could not sue it for handicap discrimination because possessing marijuana remains illegal under federal law. Lawyers for the ex-employee, Christina Barbuto, said the ruling represents a major win for employees in the state and set a precedent that they said could have an impact in other states where medi-

cal marijuana is legal. Barbuto had accused Advantage Sales and Marketing of firing her after her first day of work because she tested positive for the drug, which she had been prescribed by a doctor to treat low appetite, a side effect of her Crohn’s disease. Chief Justice Ralph Gants wrote that if a doctor concludes medical

marijuana is the most effective treatment for an employee’s debilitating condition, “an exception to an employer’s drug policy to permit its use is a facially reasonable accommodation.” “The fact that the employee’s possession of medical marijuana is in violation of federal law does not make it per se unreasonable as an accommo-

dation,” Gants wrote. The ruling by a unanimous six-judge panel noted that only the employee, not the company, could have been subject to prosecution under federal law for her drug use. Massachusetts voters approved the medicinal use of marijuana in 2012, joining the majority of U.S. states to allow for the drug’s medical use. State voters in November went further, legalizing recreational use of marijuana. Matthew Fogelman, Barbuto’s lawyer, called the ruling a “groundbreaking decision” for employees in the state. “This is the highest court in Massachusetts recognizing that the use of medically prescribed marijuana is just as lawful as the use of any prescribed medication,” he said. Northeastern student wins opportunity to pursue passion of ocean conservation photography Tim Briggs hasn’t graduated from college yet, but he’s already getting paid to pursue his passion. The 21-year-old junior at Northeastern University will get to spend six weeks and $5,000 focusing on his dream career: underwater and conservation photography. Briggs is one of 15 winners from around the world who won the opportunity through a competition called #ThisFirst, launched by the skate, surf and snowboarding apparel company Volcom. #ThisFirst was a global initiative, according to the company, “to find and reward those who make sacrifices every day, to create more time to pursue their passion.” The prompt for the competition was: “What’s your ‘this’ and what would it mean to you to put #ThisFirst?” For Briggs, it means the culmination of a lifelong interest and affection for the ocean. He started scuba diving at age 12 and was influenced by his family to pursue marine biology in college (with a minor in photography). “I’m really fortunate to have a family of scientists and ocean-focused people,” he said, “and my grandfather is big into photography, so I had both sides of the equation pushing me.” Briggs has been able to travel outside of New England for dives. He took what he says is his best photo so far while diving in Cozumel, Mexico, of a sea turtle sitting amid some coral.

“I hadn’t really experienced diving with turtles that much — usually when you see them, they don’t like you, but the turtles in Cozumel are incredibly docile,” he said. “This was a photo I really couldn’t miss.” It was also the photo Briggs submitted with his contest application. For him, it’s about more than sharing a pretty shot. “The ocean is a really beautiful place and very actively dying,” he said. “It’s really important to me that people, if they don’t want to save the ocean, at least know what it was like before it was gone.” KRISTIN TOUSSAINT

According to The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEEP) Power and Energy Society, the electric power industry is going through an enormous expansion and will look to replace as many as 50% of their engineers. There’s a growing need for highly-skilled, quality engineers to revitalize the nation’s power grid and prepare us for a clean energy future. BFIT is poised to meet the demand for new workers in energy-related jobs. The Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree will prepare students to work in a wide range of fields including electric power, computers, robotics, and biomedical devices at local companies like Eversource, Raytheon, Textron, and National Grid, as well as many other local and national companies. The Electrical Engineering program joins BFIT’s other STEM programming, which has seen record growth over the last five years. The program is the result of a unique collaboration between BFIT and Suffolk University. The curriculum was originally taught at Suffolk University for 20 years and recently, the engineering faculty began working with BFIT to create a new home for the program. The program boasts strong industry support, partnerships with Boston-area high schools, and is valued by the local chapters of engineering professional societies. Lisa Shatz, Chair of the program said, “BFIT is a great fit for the student-centered focus of the program. The college has a very supportive environment with wrap around services for students and affordable tuition. There’s also the opportunity for expansion into related fields such as biomedical and mechanical technologies.” Anthony Benoit, President of BFIT, said he was initially skeptical about adding a bachelor’s in engineering, since BFIT is primarily a two-year college. But, he added that BFIT’s goal is a job for every graduate, so “the more we looked, the more it made sense. We were very impressed by the strength of the ties with the companies that employ the graduates. And the faculty’s dedication to the success of electrical engineering students matched the commitment at BFIT.” For more information about BFIT’s Electrical Engineering Program, contact Johane Alexis-Phanor at 617-588-1342 or jalexis-phanor@bfit.edu. About Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology Founded in Boston in 1908, Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology (BFIT) is a private, affordable nonprofit college that combines the practicality of vocational education with the intellectual exploration of liberal arts. BFIT is dedicated to training and educating Greater Boston urban youth in today’s high demand industries in a small supportive environment. It is one of New England’s oldest colleges of technology, started with a bequest from Benjamin Franklin and a gift from Andrew Carnegie. According to the Department of Education’s 2016 College Scorecard, BFIT students earn the highest salary after attending compared to students from all two-year colleges in Massachusetts (excluding nursing). BFIT’s graduation rate is double the national rate and triple the state rate when compared to 2-year colleges. For more information, visit www.bfit.edu.

R. Kelly is indefensible R. Kelly has been followed by accusations of bad behavior for a long time, and the many, many allegations against him have been consistently swept under the rung. But none of that was enough for one group of parents to keep their teenage daughters away from Kelly, because you know, fame is more important than a child’s well being. In an expose written by Jim DeRogatis for Buzzfeed, several parents speak out, accusing

Kelly of keeping their daughters in a sex-obsessed, abusive cult. One parent, who was thrilled that her “19-year-old daughter’s music career was going to make a major leap forward ... thanks to the help of [Kelly]” wasn’t “overly worried” about her kid being in the presence of the R&B superstar, despite the many allegations that have been levied against him. The parents have, of course, changed their tune — now that they haven’t heard from their daughter in two years. Is that enough to make people start paying attention?

Your Twitter has gotten a lot of attention lately. What do you like about the app? Usually I’m just trying to be silly and have fun. I’m not really known by a lot of people as a funny person, [but] my favorite thing about [social media] is when I’ve made people laugh. When I know that I’ve genuinely made people laugh, I know that I’ve made them feel a little bit better that day. And as stupid and small as that is, it’s real. How do you combat that? I have a life that I’m really appreciative of. I’m so thankful, but there are days where I can’t see or feel any of that. So there’s another part of me that wants to show the reality of humanity. That even though things might look a certain way on the inside or that a person has the perfect life, it’s not always that way. And ďŹ nally, we’re obligated to talk to you about “Cruel Intentions.â€? Did you ever think it would become so iconic? I love the nostalgia, and that people continue to rediscover that movie. It’s fun to have done a few things that people still watch and that are on TV with regularity. That’s a rare thing! And I think it’s cool. I hoped I would one day have a seminal teen movie the way that “Breakfast Clubâ€? was for me when I was young, I wanted to have one of those, so I was hoping that was what “Cruel Intentions would be.â€? And it was.

Drink like a bootlegger at this Speakeasyinspired, pop-up bar

The pop-up bar is touring Loews Hotels across the country.

It’s not Prohibition anymore, so come thirsty to Traveller Bar. CATHERINE PERLOFF @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

Traveller Bar will serve up drinks in Boston for a limited time.

The Traveller Bar invites you to go back to an era when the booze was illicit, the bars were hidden and the parties were wilder. But your opportunity to live the Prohibition, bootlegger lifestyle is limited, as the unique pop-up bar, which debuted at the Loews Boston Hotel on July 12, is only staying in the Hub through Aug. 4. It’s doubtful you’ll leave Traveller Bar thirsty, with its unique cocktails and a full list of beers and wines. The pop-up bar is touring Loews Hotels across the country,

and eight cocktails from its complete menu of 32 mixologist-designed beverages were chosen for Boston. Highlights include the Fedora, a mix of Remy Martin 1738 cognac, cointreau, rum, bourbon and lemon oil; and the Revolving Door door, which keeps it simple with rye whiskey, lemon juice and maple syrup. While Traveller Bar is a contemporary creation, its aesthetic captures the spirit of the Roaring Twenties. The bar was assembled from an old elevator car and features an antique cash register as well as metal mesh walls lined with shelves of bottles and books. The 50 volumes are not just decoration, but vintage cocktail recipe books from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Notably, the Traveller Bar in-

MAKE HEALTHY YOUR NEW HAPPY

Your guide to good vaginal health How to prevent yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis and more in these muggy summer months. KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn

kate.mooney@metro.us

Summertime. You’re sweating a lot, all over, but there’s one area that gets particularly, shall we say, lush. Sure, people laugh, even commiserate about swamp ass all the time, but why isn’t anyone talking about swamp vagina? Beyond the discomfort of having constantly sweat-saturated lady parts, the excess moisture can also cause a couple issues, namely yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis (BV). While you obviously can’t avoid sweating, there are a few ways to keep your subtropical region in check. We consulted Dr. Taraneh Shirazian, assistant professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at NYU Langone Medical Center, to talk us through the lifestyle measures we can take to maintain good vaginal health during these muggy months. Moisture control “I would probably refrain from exercising in [excessive] heat,”

hours,” she says. That also goes for reusable menstrual devices such as a Diva Cup.

she adds. (Thongs and tight jean shorts are not the best idea.) If you spend a lot of time in pools during the summer, be mindful that the exposure to chlorine could also disrupt things down there. To prevent against that happening, Shirazian says to make sure you’re not sitting around in a wet swimsuit — a good rule of thumb after swimming in salt or fresh water.

wellbeing Tips for maintaining good vaginal pH: Take a daily probiotic, be sure to change out of sweaty clothes or a wet bathing suit as soon as you can and change menstrual products every few hours. ISTOCK

Shirazian says. As you sweat, the moisture that accumulates in and around your vagina “sets off the vaginal pH, so there’s an overgrowth of yeast and bacteria,” she explains. If you’re hooked on staying active no

matter the temp, at least be vigilant about changing out of that sweaty underwear as soon as you’re done your workout, Shirazian says. If you commute to work via bike, bring a clean pair of underwear to change into. If you

use baby wipes, make sure they’re scent-andfragrance-free, she notes -- both can also alter pH balance. “Even water on toilet paper would be good,” she says. You also want to be sure the clothing you’re wearing isn’t restrictive,

What about sex? Because it’s hotter outside, bacteria breed more, causing any bacterial infection you have, like a urinary tract infection (UTI), to likely be worse in the summer, Shirazian explains, although you’re not more likely to get a UTI now than any other time of year. One of the main causes of a UTI is bacteria from the vagina, penis, or anus getting trapped in the urethra during sex. “Sex is a year-round thing, but maybe it’s happening more in the summer, I don’t know,” she jokes. Using a condom can lower your chances by preventing the exchange of sperm and vaginal bacteria, she explains. (Peeing after sex is another good move, as it helps clear out the urinary tract.) You should always practice good hygiene with any sex toys that you use, as well, and be even more vigilant during the summer months. “Anything that you put inside you that has the ability to grow bacteria, can affect the pH,” she explains. Make sure you’re cleaning your sex toys with soap and water after each use.

Diet Shirazian recommends a daily dose of an overthe-counter probiotic supplement — especially for women who are already prone to yeast infections — to keep your pH levels in check. Foods that contain probiotics, such as yogurt, kombucha and kimchi are also good to work into your daily diet. Stay away from highsugar foods, which can cause an overgrowth of yeast. That includes alcohol, particularly those fruity, summery cocktails like margaritas and pina coladas. Menstruation Wearing tampons for too many hours can cause bacteria to grow. “Anything that you’re placing internally during your menstrual cycle, change it frequently, every few

A case of summer SADs When you hear the term seasonal affective disorder, (SAD), you usually think of the wintertime blues, when folks feel sluggish and depressed due to the shorter, colder days and decreased exposure to light. While less common, the mood disorder can also cause the summertime blues. The National Institute of Mental Health defines SAD as “a type of depression displaying a recurring seasonal pattern.” To be diagnosed with SAD, “people must meet full criteria for major depression coinciding with specific seasons (appearing in the winter or summer months) for at

least two years.” Symptoms of winter SAD consist of low energy, hypersomnia, weight gain and social withdrawal; with summer SAD, it’s the opposite. Folks experience decreased appetite, insomnia and anxiety that manifests in restlessness. “Depression isn’t always lethargy,” explains Dr. Marc Romano, director of Medical Services at Delphi Behavioral Health. “With agitated depression, you see people moving around a lot, fidgeting.” While more research is needed to determine the cause of seasonal affective disorder, doctors

believe it has something to do with the disruption of circadian rhythm that comes with the change in seasons, namely the change in light, Romano explains. With fewer hours of sunlight in the winter, patients experiencing SAD sometimes overproduce melatonin, the sleep hormone that’s activated by darkness. Excess levels can lead to lethargy. Similarly, some may suffer from a Vitamin D deficiency, which is associated with depressive symptoms. Wintertime SAD patients are often prescribed 20-60 minute daily sessions using a light-therapy box, or SAD

lamp, which simulates sunlight. Those experiencing summertime SAD are advised to do the opposite: to counteract the extra hours of daylight by darkening the windows around 5 or 6 in the evening, Romano explains. This can help get their circadian rhythm back on track. Supplementing with melatonin can also help restore the sleep-

ISTOCK

wake cycle. In both case, the depressive symptoms are tied to the season. “People start to get depressed when the winter, or summer months come ... and it just seems to lift when the season is over,” Romano explains. Whereas, “people who tend to have more of a depressive disorder, it doesn’t matter what season it is: They’re going to

be depressed.” Romano suggests that both winter or summer SAD patients get evaluated by a mental-health professional, who can rule out that the symptoms aren’t indicative of something more serious. Therapy and short course of antidepressants can help mitigate the disorder until it lifts with the change in season. KATE MOONEY

The Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera would surely do a number on the left field wall at Fenway, but his price tag is likely too large for even the rich Red Sox. GETTY IMAGES

Trade winds blowin’ for Red Sox A look at the odds the Red Sox will land some big fish at the deadline. MATT BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

Red Sox boss Dave Dombrowski is routinely among the most active baseball executives around the MLB trade deadline each year. That will not change in the next two weeks, as the Sox are positioned as prototypical buyers. The only questions now are, how many trades will Dombrowski make between now and July 31, and which positions will he target. The obvious needs for the Red Sox are a big bat, a third baseman, a starting pitcher and a relief pitcher. While Dombrowski is the “go-big or gohome” type, filling

all of those positions with quality players is highly unlikely. Sexy names like the Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera and Justin Verlander are being floated, but expect the Red Sox to tinker rather than go all summer blockbuster. Here are some names and the odds that they land in Boston.

Todd Frazier Frazier would be a relatively cheap rental, and a move to join his former teammate Chris Sale at Fenway makes a world of sense. Frazier won’t light up the night sky, as the 31-year-old has a Pablo Sandoval-like .207 batting average. The difference between Frazier and the big Panda, though, is that Frazier has some legit pop in his bat when he does connect. He has 16 home runs this season, six of them coming in

the past 30 days. Odds: 3/1

Asdrubal Cabrera Michael Silverman, of the Boston Herald, reported this week that the Sox might be interested in the services of Cabrera. The issue here is that Cabrera has only played one game at third base in his career. Like Frazier, he’d be a rental. Cabrera has been a tad better than Frazier at the plate this season, batting .250. Odds: 10/1

Miguel Cabrera Alex Rodriguez — a regular Peter Gammons — said Saturday on Fox that he thinks Dombrowski would get Miggy to the Red Sox via trade (for the record, Metro first floated this idea a week ago). The glaring issues here are Cabrera’s ridiculous salary and age

as he’ll be making $32 million in 2023 when he’ll be in his 40s. The Red Sox are the lucky sperm of the baseball world, but this will prove to be a little too rich even for the stargazing Dombrowski. Odds: 45/1

but if one of the above falters in a playoff game — it would be nice to have options. Odds: 20/1

Sonny Gray Dombrowski is a big believer in stacking a pitching rotation. Earlier this decade he had a five man rotation of Max Scherzer (21-3 that year), Verlander (13-12), Anibal Sanchez (14-8), Doug Fister (14-9) and some guy named Rick Porcello (13-8). The Red Sox have a comparable crew in Chris Sale, David Price, Drew Pomeranz, Eduardo Rodriguez and Porcello — but none of them are exactly postseason tested. Gray (5-4, 3.27 ERA) doesn’t have a postseason track record either,

Finding the best fantasy draft position A look at the best spots to pick and choose players from in your upcoming fantasy draft. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

It’s just about that time for fantasy football team owners to pick their draft position for upcoming drafts in August and September. Which leads to an eternal burning question — how much does draft order matter? The gut instinct for a fantasy owner is to want the No. 1 pick. This would provide the most control. Many leagues allow participants to

pick their draft order based on the previous year’s standings, while others automatically assign draft position based on a variety of factors. It might not be the best strategy to aspire for the highest possible draft slot — it can be a little more nuanced. Here are some things to consider when weighing where one should want to draft:

It’s a snake For the most part, fantasy drafts take a wraparound, snake format. Which means in a 10-team league, the first overall pick would also pick 20th and 21st. That’s a long time to wait between drafting players, and there could be a big drop

3

CBS SPORTS CONCLUDED THAT THE NO. 3 SPOT IS THE IDEAL PLACE TO DRAFT FROM IN A 12-TEAM LEAGUE off in player-quality as opposed to, say, drafting 7th, 14th and 27th. It’s definitely worth considering your plan for the second and third rounds when deciding where to draft from.

The top tier How many players would you be happy with in the first round? This year, there isn’t really a clear cut top four

or five players. Deciding how many players you’d be satisfied with as your first round pick can help determine your optimal draft spot.

Sophisticated stats There is not much data available on which draft slots yield the most league champions. One study conducted by fantasyfootballimpact. com found that twice as many league champions came from the sixth spot in 10-team leagues than any other spot, with the ninth spot providing the second most champions. However the distribution was rather equal across the different draft positions — with nearly a third of first and second

place finishers starting with the top overall pick (most of them finishing second).

12 teams? In leagues with 12 teams, the data is similar (though still sparsely found). In a study from 2013, CBSSports surmised through number crunching that the No. 3 draft spot had the most league winners, with the fourth and fifth slots tying for second most. In this analysis, 10th 11th and 12th are the three worst spots to draft from. The data seems to suggest that the latest in a first round you can get an impact player the better spot for a drafter — as they’ll have better position in subsequent rounds.

FANTASY BASEBALL: TIPS FOR WINNING THE SECOND HALF

OPINION

KYLE BISHOP @amoralpanic

With the All-Star break in the rearview mirror, here are some tips for a successful second half, no matter where you currently sit in the standings. First place: Don’t let up No matter how large your lead may be, there’s plenty of season left. Resist the urge the rest on your laurels. After all, you likely worked hard to get to the top. Maintain the good habits you’ve developed, and don’t be afraid to take calculated risks when appropriate. If you play in a head-tohead league, be sure to monitor things like in-

ing from a weakness to improve or fortify a strength is counterintuitive, but sometimes the situation calls for it.

nings caps for pitchers and late-season prospect promotions that could make a big difference come playoff time. In rotisserie formats, keep a close eye on your competitors’ strengths and weaknesses as well as their transactions.

Contenders: Every little bit helps You’re in solid shape, but you’ll need to limit mistakes going forward if you’re going to grab the gold. The best way to do that is to outwork your opponents. Check the overall standings every day, especially in rotisserie leagues. It’s not just about where your team stands; you can often scratch out a few crucial points in the standings by making mutually beneficial deals that help another team at the expense of a rival ahead of you. Deal-

Keep tabs on solid pitchers on teams that will be in the pennant race in the second half, like Boston’s Drew Pomeranz. GETTY IMAGES

Bubble teams: Make a splash Perched precariously on the edge of contention, your season hangs in the balance. Sure, you could stand pat. Maybe that injured star will come back strong and propel you to victory. Perhaps that first-half breakout will persist until October. But you could just as easily end up continuing to tread water while your rivals make moves and leave you in the dust. It might be better to change things up. Gamble on big names who struggled in the first half. Be more willing to cut bait on underachievers in favor of the flavor of the week.

Aries An interesting idea will give you something to explore. There is money to be made if you turn something you enjoy doing into a moneymaking venture.

Libra Refuse to follow the crowd. If something doesn’t appeal to you or appears to be too risky, you are best off remaining a spectator and learning from what you see.

Taurus Emotional matters will mount. Look for a way to compromise in order to avoid a change of plans. A frugal approach to personal and domestic problems is encouraged.

Scorpio What you do will make a difference, but what you say will lead to trouble. If you do something nice for someone you love or trust, you will get something special in return.

Gemini You’ll have a false sense of your assets and capabilities. Money matters should be dealt with conservatively. Don’t spend what you don’t have. Focus on self-awareness.

Sagittarius You’ll have plenty to say and to offer, but use diplomacy to avoid an emotional backlash. Someone will be hurt if you are too blunt about what you think about him or her.

Cancer Consider the consequences of your actions before you proceed. A considered plan will serve you better than an impulsive move. Form an alliance with a trustworthy peer.

Capricorn Share your feelings and make your intentions clear. Stick to the truth and be willing to compromise to please a friend, family member or co-worker.

Leo Stick to the script. If you exaggerate, you will end up in an emotional situation that will slow down your efforts to get ahead. Personal improvements can be made.

Aquarius ou are best off being secretive until you have a solid idea to offer. Emotional disputes are likely to develop if you disagree with a partner, friend or relative.

Virgo Attend an event that will be conducive to meeting people in your profession. The more contacts you make, the easier it will be for you to advance.

Pisces Take part in your community or in things that friends and relatives are doing. What you contribute will be rewarded with favors that will help you advance. EUGENIA LAST
