TRUMP PRESSES VOTER FRAUD CONCERNS

1

President Donald Trump pressed his unproven claims of voter fraud at the first meeting of a commission he created to study the issue, and implied states that did not share voter data with the panel had something to hide. The panel has faced lacerating criticism from Democrats and voting rights groups that argued it could be a vehicle for changes that would make it harder for lawful voters

to cast ballots — and by a number of state governments reluctant to hand over information about their voters to the White House. Despite evidence from state officials from both parties that voter fraud is rare in U.S. elections, Trump has claimed that millions of illegal immigrants voted in the November 2016 election.

JOHN MCCAIN FOUND TO HAVE BRAIN TUMOR

2

U.S. Sen. John McCain has a brain tumor and is reviewing treatment options that may include a combination of chemotherapy and radiation, his office announced on Wednesday. The six-term Republican senator and former presidential nominee, who is 80, has been recovering at home in Arizona since undergoing a procedure to remove a blood clot from above

his left eye. Tissue analysis since that procedure revealed that a primary brain tumor known as a glioblastoma was associated with the clot, his office said.

FACEBOOK IN TALKS WITH PUBLISHERS

5

Facebook is in early talks with several news publishers about how its social media site can better support subscription business models, the company’s head of news partnerships, Campbell Brown, said in a statement. The statement comes a day after TheStreet reported that Facebook plans to launch a subscription-based news product, citing comments by Brown at a conference. Facebook will begin initial tests in October, TheStreet

reported. The feature is likely to allow publishers to create a paywall on Facebook’s Instant Articles and guide readers to a publisher’s home page to opt for a digital subscription, according to TheStreet. Instant Articles lets publishers post articles directly to the Facebook app. The idea for a paywall is based on premium and metered plans and has been in the works for a while, TheStreet said, citing Brown at the Digital Publishing Innovation Summit.

DONALD TRUMP JR, PAUL MANAFORT TO TESTIFY

3

President Donald Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., and former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort will testify on July 26 before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, the panel said in a statement. Trump Jr. and Manafort are expected to be questioned about allegations Russia meddled in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

How to stay safe — and cool — in another NYC heat wave From a doctor’s advice to a cooling mattress and knowing the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, we’ll help you beat the heat. NIKKI M. MASCALI @MetroNewYork

nikki.mascali@metro.us

With New York City still under a heat advisory until Thursday evening, not only is it miserable to be traversing through the streets and subway system (or at least even worse than normal), it can also be downright dangerous. Thursday is set to be another scorcher, so Metro spoke with Dr. Lawrence Phillips, a cardiologist and assistant

professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health, to find the best ways to beat the heat and stay safe from heat exhaustion and heat stroke — and to clarify the differences between the two. Metro: Is it hot enough for you? Dr. Lawrence Phillips: [Laughs] Walking from hospital to hospital, I’m having my fill. What is the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke? As the body starts losing the battle to fight the heat, it reaches the heat exhaustion stage. If you’re not treating it at that point, you go from the heat exhaustion stage to heat stroke, which is an emergency. What are the signs of heat exhaustion?

Because it’s an imbalance from the heat and the body’s reaction, some symptoms are a fast pulse, extreme sweating, redness or flushness to the skin — a headache can develop and, as it gets worse, nausea and muscle aches. What are the signs of heat stroke? Seizures, passing out, mental status changes, agitation or confusion. It’s a medical emergency that it’s not enough to get the person out of the heat, you want to get medical care. It’s going to be worsening of nausea and muscle aches. Who is most at-risk for heat-related emergencies? We worry about patients over the age of 65. People in their 60s, 70s and 80s — their re-

sponse to heat has diminished, so they’re not able to normalize their temperatures like someone in their 20s or 30s. What are things New Yorkers can do if stuck on the subway or a subway platform during heat waves? Their health should be primary. If they’re in a crowded subway station for a long period of time, and they feel they’re getting overheated or their pulse is increasing or they feel nauseous, get out of the subway station. Is water truly the best option for drinking? Water is very important, but it’s not always going to be enough when you’re sweating a lot because you’re losing water and salt. Mix up different drinks, but be careful with caffeine.

Know your limits if you’re heading outside during a heat wave. CARLOS LLAMAS

How to keep cool during the heat wave • Throw on your bathing suit and get thee to the nearest public pool, beach or splash pad, and dive in ASAP if not sooner. • If you want to head to one of the city’s many parks, Phillips suggests wearing light and light-colored clothing — and know your limits. • If your home doesn’t have air conditioning, the city has dozens of cooling centers, and one is bound to be near you. Visit nyc.gov or call 311 for locations. • Visit your local firehouse to get a hydrant spray cap to really get that true summer-in-NYC experience — without wasting a lot of water. (You must be at least 18 with a valid ID.) • Coco-Mat, a natural mattress brand with four stores in New York City, just launched new colors for one of its best-selling beds, the Proteas. The metal-free mattress is made with cactus fiber, which helps regulate humidity to keep you cool.

‘Lovable’ malnourished dog rescued from Brooklyn dumpster “She was very lovable and ate like crazy,” one of her rescuers said. NIKKI M. MASCALI @MetroNewYork

nikki.mascali@metro.us

A construction worker throwing garbage in a Brooklyn dumpster made a horrible discovery Tuesday morning when he found a starving dog inside. The gray and white pup, whose ribs were completely visible, was spotted by Jose Lopez outside a Walgreens in Brownsville, according to the New York Post. Lopez, 53, who told the Post he has a rescue dog and the discovery “breaks his heart,” alerted the store employees who then

called the police. The abandoned female pit bull-Lab mix had a leash on, but did not have tags nor did she appear to have a microchip, rescue officials said. Officials allowed Lopez to give the dog to his friends Thomas Brosnan and Rita Morabito-accardi, who are experienced animal rescuers on Long Island. Brosnan told the Post the rescued pup, who remains nameless, is about 20 pounds, which is severely underweight for her breed. She should be between 35 and 40 pounds at that age, he added. “Thank you everyone who helped save this little girl today from dying inside this dumpster,” Morabito-accardi captioned an Instagram photo of the dog. “She safe,

belly’s full and cleaned. And she will be getting a good home soon.” Brosnan told the Post that they had received 10 calls from people who wanted to adopt her by Tuesday afternoon. Morabito-accardi told Metro on Wednesday morning that the rescued dog was currently at the veterinarian, and she was waiting for an update on her condition. When she and Brosnan took possession of the dog after Lopez found her, Morabito-accardi could tell she was “very lovable.” “As soon as we got her in the car, she was jumping and kissing and a little nervous,” she said. “[She’s] a little intimidated by men, so she must have been abused by a man.” She also said that the dog’s abusers boxed

her tail, and it was so botched “they obviously did it at home.” The dog should be ready for her new home in a few weeks, Morabitoaccardi said. “We have to fatten her up and will do a personality check,” she added. “We have to test to see if she’s OK with kids and men, my female took almost a year to be OK.”

“She safe, belly’s full and cleaned. And she will be getting a good home soon.” Rita Morabito-accardi

If anyone is interested in adopting the dog, donating toward her medical bills, giving items such as blankets or food or

fostering a rescue themselves, please email nikki .mascali@metro.us, who will send your info to Morabito-accardi.

POLITICS Repealing Obamacare would leave 32M more uninsured Thirty-two million Americans would lose their health insurance by 2026 if Obamacare is repealed without a replacement, the U.S. Congressional Budget Office reported as President Donald Trump pushed fellow Senate Republicans to reach an agreement on overhauling the country’s healthcare law. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell planned to hold a vote for a straight repeal

of the Affordable Care Act next week after a bill to repeal and replace collapsed on Monday with the Republican party sharply divided. According to the CBO, a nonpartisan office that analyzes pending legislation, 17 million Americans would lose health insurance alone in 2018 with a repeal while premiums on individual insurance plans would rise 25 percent next year and double by 2026. Trump told 49 Republican

senators at a White House lunch on Wednesday that he wanted more than a straight repeal. After taking a hands-off approach to the healthcare debate last week and suggesting on Tuesday that he was fine with letting Obamacare fail, Trump on Wednesday demanded that senators stay in Washington through their planned August recess until they can find common ground on healthcare. “We’re close. We’re very close,” Trump said at the start of

the meeting. He demanded that lawmakers keep their campaign promises to repeal and replace Obamacare and find a new approach to healthcare. “We can repeal, but we should repeal and replace, and we shouldn’t leave town until this is complete,” he said. After the lunch, McConnell said he will go ahead with a vote early next week to begin debate on a repeal of the ACA. REUTERS

A tortoise that went missing from a Queens environmental education facility Monday is missed not only by the humans who loved and cared for him, but also a fellow tortoise who has been his best friend for the past six years. “You can tell she misses the companionship,” Venus Hall, educator at Alley Pond Environmental Center in Douglaston, told Metro Wednesday of Mini Me, who was Millennium’s companion. Millennium, an African spurred tortoise that was rescued by APEC 12 years ago, was reported missing on Monday afternoon after he couldn’t be found in one of his usual haunts or burrows in his garden area. After a closer inspec-

tion, staffers noticed that a back gate in the garden had been tinkered with, leading them to believe that Millennium had been stolen and hadn’t burrowed under the gate, Hall told DNAinfo on Tuesday. APEC did not have any surveillance cameras centered on the area, but it is something that the facility might consider in the near future, Hall told Metro. Metro: Have there been any updates on Millennium’s whereabouts? Venus Hall: Not at this time. A lot of people are calling concerned, but we have nothing yet. How has his absence affected Mini Me? The first morning she was actually not aggressive, but we had her inside, and she was knocking things over. She’s more lethargic than normal. What dangers are facing Millennium if he’s not cared for properly? He needs a large area to walk around and burrow. If they don’t have him in enclosure, he can burrow himself out of any simple yard. It’s a danger to be hit by car if he gets out on his own or he could get into things like pesticides that are in those kinds of yards.

BETTING ON OBAMACARE President Trump and his fellow Republicans just put a big, fat wager on the table. Unable to muster enough support to pass their vaunted repeal-and-replace plan for the Affordable Care Act, the president announced an alternative strategy: “We’ll let Obamacare fail, and then the Democrats are gonna come to us, and they’re gonna say, ‘How do we fix it? How do we fix it?’ or, ‘How do we come up with a new plan?’” That’s a bold claim, considering that former President Barack Obama — and pretty much every Democrat in D.C. since — has declared it a raging success. “Never in American history has the uninsured rate been lower than it is today. Never!” he said last October. So who is right? In some ways, the Republicans are. The Affordable Care Act is failing if you counted on Obama’s promise that it would dramatically reduce pretty much everyone’s insurance premiums. The rate of increase has slowed, but those payments are still ticking upward. Choice is also not working out so well. Numerous big-name insurance companies have retreated from the markets in several states, leaving some folks with few options or none. Maybe those companies will come back, and the problem will ease. Or maybe not, and it may get worse. But the Democrats are right, too — the Affordable Care Act is succeeding if you look at the 20 million people who didn’t have insur-

ance before the law and now do. People with pre-existing conditions have more protections. Many of the ACA’s provisions are popular. And despite blustery GOP predictions of a financial “death spiral” for the ACA, the numbers say otherwise. A report from the respected Kaiser Family Foundation this month says “new data offer more evidence that the individual market has been stabilizing, and insurers are regaining profitability.” That sounds a tad wonky, but here’s the plain English version: While Obamacare is not succeeding as well as some hoped, and it certainly has problems in some places, it’s also not failing coast-to-coast as some others have feared. And unless Republicans nudge it that direction, their wait for Obamacare’s collapse could be a very long one.

NEW YORK CITY New York man gets 22 years in prison for hammer attacks A hammer-wielding man who attacked four people including a police officer during a threeday string of assaults in New York City two years ago was sentenced on Wednesday to 22 years in prison, prosecutors said. David Baril, 32, pleaded guilty in May to attempted aggravated assault upon a police officer and multiple counts of assault in the second degree,

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance said in a statement, adding that “New Yorkers were gripped with fear” during the attacks. Baril, a native of New York City’s Bronx borough who police said suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, was also sentenced to five years of post-release supervision. On May 11, 2015, he randomly attacked a 20-year-old man in Manhattan, striking him in the back of the head

with a hammer, according to prosecutors. Several hours later, he used the same hammer to attack two women aged 28 and 33, also hitting them both in the head. Baril was identified as a suspect using security camera footage and witness accounts. Two days later, police officers Lauren O’Rourke and Geraldo Casaigne spotted Baril in midtown Manhattan and approached him, Vance’s statement said. Baril pulled out a hammer

and repeatedly struck O’Rourke in the head and body before Casaigne drew his gun and fired four shots at him. Baril had been arrested eight times prior to the hammer attacks, once for attempting to assault a police officer, authorities said at the time. In May 2014, Baril posted a photo on social media showing a bloody hammer that is believed to be the same one used in the attacks. REUTERS

Good job, ‘Game of Thrones’ fans, you stopped watching online porn for an hour The Season 7 premiere was satisfying, apparently. ERIN TIERNAN @ErinTiernan

erin.tiernan@metro.us

Good job guys, it looks like a few of you managed to peel your eyes away from watching internet porn watching long enough to watch the hour-long “Game of Thrones” season 7 premiere on Sunday. Give yourselves a pat on the back. It turns out if there’s anything that can distract people from watching porn, it’s “Game of Thrones,” which makes sense considering many of the episodes contain graphic scenes of sex and violence anyway. The highly anticipated “Game of Thrones” Season 7 premiere on Sunday caused a 4.5 dip in traffic on Pornhub during the airing from 9 to 10 p.m. That’s a considerable change to the number of visitors on the popular porn website, statisticians noted, as Sunday night is typically one of the most popular times for people to watch porn on Pornhub. That’s the most ever for a “Game of Thrones” premiere, though the biggest drop ever in Pornhub traffic correlating with “Game of Thrones” happened on June 26, 2016, during the Season 6 finale. Though notable, Pornhub viewers are actually more likely to be distracted by football, basketball and (believe it or not) politics than they are by “Game of Thrones.” Pornhub visitors dropped by a whopping 27 percent on Feb. 5 during Super Bowl

Pornhub data showed a drop in online porn stats.

Li when comparing traffic to an average Sunday. Game 5 of the NBA Finals on June 12 was also a major traffic deterrent on Pornhub, which saw traffic dip by 17 to 21 percent during the game time when compared to an average Monday. Even the James Comey Senate hearing on June 8 caused a bigger drop in traffic to Pornhub in the Washington area when compared to a typical Thursday. The porn site saw a 10 percent drop in visitors at 10 a.m. when the testimony began. Pornhub saw big spikes in traffic at the conclusion of both the NBA and NFL games. After losing, Cavaliers fans apparently felt the need to make themselves feel better, causing a 28 percent jump in traffic in the Cleveland Area. Nationwide there was a 9 percent jump in porn

traffic on Pornhub at the conclusion of Super Bowl Li. There was no such spike after the “Game of Thrones” premiere, which probably means people were pretty satisfied with the show. Pornhub plans to track visitors throughout the seven-episode season. Stay tuned to see what happens this year.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg would tie Donald Trump in a theoretical presidential election, a new survey shows. ton in 2016, and 9 percent of Trump voters. The poll came about, apparently, because for the past few months, Zuckerberg has conspicuously looked like a guy who’s considering running for president. He’s been touring the country, visiting diners and truck stops, having dinner with a typical Ohio family, even punching the clock at a Ford factory.

Which Republican senators opposed the GOP healthcare bill Here’s why Republicans can’t just “repeal and replace Obamacare. ERIN TIERNAN @ErinTiernan

erin.tiernan@metro.us

Senate Republicans’ push to repeal and replace Obamacare is dead, for now, thanks to moderates who found replacement legislation too tough and ultra-conservatives who thought the Senate healthcare bill’s cuts weren’t severe enough. Republican leaders are now struggling to whip up the votes needed to pass any bill, including their most recent plan that focuses more on repealing than replacing. They would need at least 50 votes, in which case

Vice President Mike Pence would cast the tiebreaking vote. Every Democrat has pledged a “noâ€? vote on the Republican healthcare bill, pointing to deep cuts in Medicaid and a plan to withhold Planned Parenthood funding for a year. The Republican healthcare bill, known as the Better Care Reconciliation Act, would have allowed states to opt out of essential health benefits required under former President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act, like preventative care and maternity care. Frustrated by wavering support on their own side of the aisle, Republicans have proposed a straight repeal of the ACA, but alas, they don’t have the votes to do that either. Meet the key Republicans blocking the GOP ef-

fort at healthcare reform: Sen. Susan Collins of Maine: Collins opposed the measure because of how many people would lose insurance due to deep cuts to Medicaid. When the newest version of the bill was released last week, she tweeted that the Medicaid cuts were still there, and she would still vote “no. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky: At the opposite end sits Paul, who thinks the Senate healthcare reform bill keeps too much of President Obama’s Affordable Care Act in place. On June 27, the senator tweeted, “The bill is currently not repeal and needs major improvement. Sen. Mike Lee of Utah: Like Paul, Lee

THE FUN STARTS HERE

When Harry Styles met Christopher Nolan Harry Styles, far left, makes his movie acting debut in Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk,” in theaters Friday. WARNER BROS. PICTURES

The filmmaker swears he had no idea who the One Direction star was when he cast him in “Dunkirk.” LUCIA HERNANDEZ @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

With “Dunkirk,” Christopher Nolan wants you to feel like you’re really there. The filmmaker’s latest is a World War II epic, dropping us into the aftermath of the Battle of Dunkirk, in which 400,000 English soldiers were trapped on a beach in the north of France. Home was a short trip across the sea, but they were surrounded by the German army. Their rescue is the stuff of legend. But Nolan doesn’t want you to get bogged down in details. “Dunkirk” isn’t a Wikipedia movie. It’s no mere history lesson.

“The most important thing for me was to demonstrate what it felt like to the people who were really there,” Nolan says. He didn’t want there to be too much information or an abundance of war movie cliches. “I wanted to tell an intensely subjective story that gave the public a wider view of what happened, but without the need for barracks, generals and maps.” He also didn’t want to use special effects. He wanted every plane, every ship, every location to be real. “With this film, I realized the true value of the genuine,.” Shots with a thousand soldiers lined up on the beach really do feature a thousand actors. “When you see real photos of this, it immediately catches your attention. It’s interesting to give something like this to the audience, to show what

it was like to be formed there, waiting in the middle of nowhere for days.” The cast of “Dunkirk” is huge, mostly filled with extras. There are big names littered about: Tom Hardy as a hotshot pilot who guns down enemy planes; Kenneth Branagh as an anguished commander trying to get his boys home; Mark Rylance as one of many English civilians who drove their boats across the Channel, ferrying soldiers back home. But many of our leads are unknowns . One of those is Fionn Whitehead, who plays Tommy, a private who’s the closest thing this ensemble picture has to a lead. “We needed young strangers to play those characters,” Nolan explains. “I didn’t want 31-year-olds doing 19-year-old roles. We wanted people to see

guys with no expectations about whether they will survive or not.” And then there’s Harry Styles. Nolan was having trouble casting the role of Alex, one of the

GETTY IMAGES

other key young soldiers. As they searched, The One Directioner sent an audition tape. “We told him, ‘Well, if you want to come in like any stranger and try this thing you’ve never done before, you’re welcome,’” Nolan recalls. Styles did just that. After what Nolan calls “audition workshops” — in which actors spend several days switching parts, acting alongside each other, forming a group — he felt Styles was “perfect.” It helped that Nolan definitely isn’t up with popular music. “Harry who?” he jokes. “When the auditions took place, I did not know who he was. My children knew who he was, but I

hadn’t seen much of him, because of my age.” “Dunkirk” is an intense experience, even moreso than his three “Batman” movies or “Inception” or “Interstellar.” It demands the audience pay attention, not look at their smartphones, keep their brains switched on. But Nolan swears he doesn’t have any loftier ambitions than to keep you watching the screen. “My goal is first and foremost to entertain,” Nolan explains. “What cinema can do for the audience is give them an invigorating experience that they could not safely experience in their lives — that will take them to a place where they would never imagine, be it a place of fiction or Dunkirk. My hope is that at the end of the film, the audience will take a break and think, ‘OK, that was an experience.’”

“Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planetsâ€? Director: Luc Besson Stars: Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne Rating: PG-13 In 1997, the summer movie season was considerably weirded up by a pricey sci-ďŹ extravaganza called “The Fifth Element.â€? It had American stars, including Bruce Willis, but it was, in fact, French — the bizarre brainchild of Luc Besson (“La Femme Nikitaâ€?), casually dropped into American multiplexes. And it was strange. It had a president played by a wrestler, a baddie (Gary Oldman) who sweated chocolate and a tentacled blue space diva crooning a hip-hop aria while Willis cried. Jump 20 years, and it’s happening again. “Valerianâ€? isn’t quite as out-there as “The

WKND Fifth Elementâ€?; its messier, longer, forgettable. But it’s an antidote to the same-ness of our summer franchise hellscape — a Eurotrash spectacle that comes from one man’s strange head, not from a greedy corporation. Based on an old French comic, Besson’s latest is set in a deep future in which humanity improbably got its stu together and formed some galactic federation with far-ung beings. Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne play our hot-shot agent heroes — a bickering will-they-or-won’tthey pair who must save the titular metropolis: a space hub for the universe’s best species. At its best, “Valerianâ€? has the dense, madcap rush of a comedic cartoon sci-ďŹ â€” think “Futuramaâ€? or “Rick and Morty,â€? though not as funny or as inventive as either. (And, coming from the guy who made the moronic yet dazzling “Lucy,â€? it’s more or less the

19

opposite of smart.) The snaky, digressive plot is purely foundational, there to prop up as many alien beasties and bizarro tech and Besson insanities as it can without breaking. Insanity is where Besson shines, anyway. “Valerianâ€? boasts sights you won’t want to un-see. Cara Delevingne puts her head inside a jellyďŹ sh’s butt so she can spy on Dane DeHaan’s memories. A cute reptile creature thing poops a urry of pearls and diamond earrings. Rihanna shape-shifts into Herbie Hancock. The casting often plays like Mad Libs, which would explain why a game Ethan Hawke swings by as a blinged-out cowboy pimp. Whatever its faults, it’s a summer blockbuster in 2017 that’s colorful instead of drab, isn’t aimed speciďŹ cally at Americans and is kind enough to give us “Space Oddityâ€? in Dolby Surround, and ought to be welcomed as a liberator.

MATT JUUL @MetroNewYork

This year is the 10th anniversary of “Knocked Up” hitting theaters. How are Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl’s characters doing as parents these days? That’s a very good question. I’ve thought about it a lot. There may be another movie in it one day, so I won’t give away any answers. Who knows?

letters@metro.us

It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since Judd Apatow introduced us to Ben and Alison, the one-night stand turned unlikely parents played by Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl in the hit comedy “Knocked Up.” Although the sort-of spin-off “This Is 40” offered a glimpse at how Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann’s characters are dealing with parenthood these days, fans are still wondering about the future of the series’ original couple. Well, the wait may be over soon according to Apatow, as the comedian and filmmaker revealed to us that a sequel could happen in the near future. Before the northeast

Do you think you could write a movie as comedic or tragic as what’s going on with Donald Trump’s White House? It’s giving everyone a lot of anxiety. Everyday there’s some new, strange detail. I don’t

think most people think we’re in very safe hands. It is satirical, but it’s real and it’s concerning. You don’t want the leaders of your country to be comfortable lying. You don’t want them to do all sorts of meetings and accidentally leave the names of the people they meet with off all of their forms. For Republicans and Democrats, it makes them nervous because you don’t know what’s going on, you don’t know what interests they’re serving. Yes, 20 years from now it will be very comical and someone will make a hilarious miniseries out of it. Right now, it’s troubling. Does all the Trump talk bleed into your stand-up work at all? I talk about politics a little bit because I don’t know how you avoid it. There’s too much going on and we’re thinking about it all day. It’s hard not to dip into a little bit of what’s happening.

“Insecure” — which premieres Sunday, July 23 — finally gets into a refreshing groove in its sophomore season, and the first thing you’ll notice is that it’s funnier than ever. But not to worry: You’ll still be able to cringe right along with your faves. In the first few epi-

sodes, for example, Issa (Issa Rae) hilariously suffers through a string of sad dates, rejections and desperate hookups leading to what has to be the most awkward and uncomfortable-looking sex ever shown on TV. Lawrence (Jay Ellis) revels in his newfound singlehood, cementing his status as a f—kboi. And Molly (Yvonne Orji) questions the perfection she’s been striving for all along. Overall, the second season manages to thoughtfully cover new

territory, highlighting how we often strive toward goals in life that aren’t the best choices for us. And your faves finally discover that all that glitters isn’t gold.

Next-gen arcade

New Yorkers don headsets and experience virtual reality at VR World, an arcade in Manhattan. ALL PHOTOS PROVIDED

With VR World, NYC finally gets a way to check out the latest virtual-reality tech. EVA KIS @thisiskis

eva.kis@metro.us

Hold onto your controllers, NYC — a huge new virtual-reality arcade called VR World just landed in Manhattan. “You can walk in and try some of the best of what virtual reality has to offer,” says Yasser Ghanchi, CEO of VR World. “What we’re trying to do is make virtual reality accessible to consumers.” Virtual reality has been the “next big thing” in gaming for years now, but unless you were going to a tech convention or shelling out over $1,000 for equipment,

there wasn’t a good way to try it. Enter VR World, where you can experience 50 of the hottest games and movies in a three-story space that feels more like an upscale lounge than the usual beeping, flashing arcades, complete with a full bar and, soon, food service. “It’s important that the experience is not too overwhelming, so you can play a game then have a snack and relax for a bit,” Ghanchi says. Located right in the shadow of the Empire State Building at 4 E. 34th St., visitors pay a flat fee of $39 for all-day unlimited access. Children over 7 are allowed in; what they can play is at their guardians’ discretion. The games start out fairly intuitively on the first floor with titles like

“Fruit Ninja,” the retrofuturistic alien shooter “Space Pirates” and Google’s “Tilt Brush,” which lets you paint in the air then step through your own brush strokes. New to VR? Each game has an attendant who helps you put on the equipment and learn the controls. An electronic wristband lets you queue up at each station, where a turn takes about 10 minutes between instructions and 5-7 minutes of play. Upstairs, the games get more complex: Cause havoc with “Rick & Morty;” bend time in “Superhot” or scale a cliff face in “The Climb.” “It sounds so basic, but it’s so realistic,” Ghanchi says. “We’ve had people screaming when they fall.” Virtual reality is often accused of removing the social aspect of gaming,

but VR World strives to keep friends connected. Each station has a screen streaming the current player’s game, and several stations offer multiplayer games like the space station shooter “Robo Recall” and a zombie hunt that prompted some screaming of its own. The arcade has several rigs that will likely never be available for home use, like four linked Formula 1-style racing seats and steering wheels, and a flight simulator you lay belly-down in. Ghanchi says developers are already approaching him to feature their games even before they’re marketed to current home VR users. “We want this to be

accessible to consumers and lead to wider VR adoption,” Ghanchi explains, “but we also want

to partner with the content people because they need support.” Funding the development of his own video game prompted him

to start VR World. “I landed in the virtual reality world through my passion in life, which is cricket,” he says. “I’m originally from Pakistan, and it’s only because of a complete lack of talent that I’m not playing cricket.” The next best thing should’ve been a video game, but “there aren’t any great cricket video games; then I realized it’s because the console experience doesn’t lend itself to cricket. Virtual reality solves that problem.” “I sound almost like a child talking about video games,” he says with a laugh. “But it’s only going to get better, and it’s only going to get more realistic.”

THINGS TO DO

The redemption of brunch “The Imbible: Day Drinking will have you toasting the most cliched meal of the week. EVA KIS @thisiskis

eva.kis@metro.us

Brunch doesn’t get a lot of respect. Breakfast is the most important, lunch is about socializing and business deals, and dinner is the one we splurge on. But brunch is a frivolous luxury, right? That is precisely why brunch needs a defender, which has arrived in the form of a musical. You don’t have to be two mimosas deep into bottomless brunch to know why that is the true and natural form to discuss this unique meal. “The Imbible: Day Drinking follows on the success of the offBroadway hit “The Imbible, which recounts the history of drinking in song. But the cast of four day drinkers are not even sure they want to go to brunch - it’s cliched, you have to get up early, and everyone’s too busy side hustling during the weekend. The show’s compelling case to get up and go begins coming together even before it begins. Instead of a theater, the

audience is seated along a banquette and tables inside the basement bar at New World Stages, and each person begins with a customized Bloody Mary prepared by the cast. Once we’re all on the same page, it’s time for each of the brunch goers to be persuaded to go to brunch. Though the play gets a bit too academic at times (no one needs to know that much about lactobacillus and fermentation), the sung anecdotes about how a Parisian cocktail bar gave rise to brunch culture and learning that bubbles were originally considered a flaw in Champagne has the effect of making you feel strangely protective of this thing you’ve likely mocked as much as you’ve participated in. Throughout the show, wigs, costumes and accents swap between a bearded hipster earnest about his espresso to an opportunistic conquistador not above using love to get a cutting of a coffee plant. The absurdity — and academic rigor — are easy to embrace as the cast dispenses two more cocktails over the course of the show. By the end, everyone is so delighted with life that the final song isn’t bittersweet at all. We’ve laughed, we’re

Great American UFO road trip

Sign up today, and you could win tomorrow!

Go to the real-life places that inspired “The X-Files.” Americans have a long, noble tradition of staring up at the night sky, seeing a strange convergence of light, and believing (hoping?) that they’ve witnessed something from beyond our world. From sea to shining sea, people have witnessed Unidentified Flying Objects flying across the sky. Whether you’re a Mulder or the much-put-upon Scully to someone else’s Mulder, these extraterrestrial-friendly destinations will make your road trip searching for the truth one to remember.

UFO Reporting Center Most places in the U.S. that are known for their UFO activity tend to be isolated parts of the southwestern desert or heavily forested areas of the Pacific Northwest. But it turns out that one of the best places to look for UFOs is a town better known for golf and sunburned vacationers. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, has played host to a huge number of sightings. And while it hasn’t held as notable extraterrestrial pedigree as, say, Roswell, the people of the beach town have been diligent in reporting on the appearances of UFOs. The National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) is chock full of sightings from tourists and locals alike describing the presence of floating orange orbs, leap-frogging lights, mysterious triangular light formations, and giant fire-like spheres hanging over the water.

Sedona, Arizona Maybe it’s the presence of the mysterious “vortexes” or the high altitude, but there’s something about Sedona that has rendered it a hotbed of UFO activity. And if you’re a bit of a novice, there are a handful of tours that’ll show you the ropes of identifying bona fide UFOs.

Enter for your chance to win a

Happy Hour Cruise for Two AN ESTIMATED $70 VALUE

Sign up at clubmetro.metro.us for your chance to win! 125 winners will receive tickets a happy hour cruise for two on the water in NYC. Soak up the sun, see NYC’s iconic sights, and sip on a drink accompanied by the sounds of an onboard DJ. Take a sound bath in the Integratron, near Joshua Tree. CHRISTOPHER MICHEL, WIKIMEDIA COMMONS

The desert town is home to nightly UFO tours. Hosted by experts, these tours take visitors out into the exceptionally clear Sedona nights armed with militarygrade night vision goggles to scan the night skies for signs of extraterrestrial activity. When on the tours, novices are taught how to distinguish

Intrepid believers looking to do a little investigating of their own at one the alleged crash sites will have a difficult time of it. The sites are all located in difficult-to-get-to parts of the New Mexico desert outside of the city of Roswell. While there used to be a bus tour (and even a helpful sign) to a site in a field on the outskirts of Corona, visitors looking to venture forth will have to arm themselves with coordinates, a GPS, and possibly an ATV.

between stars, aircraft, satellites and (naturally) UFOs. Because knowing what you’re not looking for is as important as knowing what you are looking for.

Roswell Crash Site Is it really a Great American UFO Road Trip without a stop at Roswell? The New Mexico city is, of course, famous for being the site of an alleged alien spacecraft crash. And while certain party-poopers (a.k.a. the U.S. government) have insisted that the 1947 incident was merely a nuclear test surveillance balloon gone awry, the Roswell crash has remained a point of fascination for UFO believers and conspiracy theorists for over half a century.

California was recently bestowed with the auspicious honor of being named the top state for UFO sightings. But of all the Golden State’s UFO-friendly spots, it’s Joshua Tree National Park that allows enthusiasts to hit two birds with one stone. Joshua Tree has been a hub of UFOs and the people who seek them out for decades. You can visit the appropriately named Giant Rock that’s served as a gathering site for enthusiasts since the 1950s. Take a “sound bath” in the Integatron, whose creator claims to have been contacted by Venusians with instructions to build a time-travel dome. And of course, there’s always striking out into the night in search of unexplainable lights zipping across the sky. You can even go searching for the legendary hidden alien base that’s said to be located somewhere beneath the rocky desert landscape. And if you do happen to have a close encounter and want to share or make sense of your expe-

rience, be sure to check out Contact in the Desert. Held May 19-22, is the largest of UFO convention in the U.S., attracting thousands of UFO rookies and experts alike. Attendees can spend the weekend attending lectures on secret excavations in Antarctica, workshops on how to prepare for contact, or even doing a little yoga. (It’s still Southern California, after all.)

Yanks’ trade isn’t really about Frazier

The Yankees received a ton of bullpen help early Wednesday morning when they picked up David Robertson (left) and Tommy Kahnle (right) along with inďŹ elder Todd Frazier from the Chicago White Sox. GETTY IMAGES

Sure, picking up a power bat like Frazier’s is nice, but the Yankees’ bullpen is the real winner of this trade with the White Sox. JOE PANTORNO @JoePantorno

joseph.pantorno@metro.us

You have to commend the New York Yankees for their ability to work on the fly. When a need or hole reveals itself within the roster, general manager Brian Cashman usually addresses it. It was no different just as the clock struck midnight on early Wednesday morning as

New York completed a deal with the Chicago White Sox, acquiring slugger Todd Frazier along with relievers David Robertson and Tommy Kahnle. In return, the Yankees sent 2016 first-round pick and outfielder Blake Rutherford, minor leaguers Ian Clarkin (LHP), Tito Polo (OF) and big-league reliever Tyler Clippard. That last part made Yankees fans plenty happy considering Clippard was a trainwreck this season, sporting a 4.95 ERA with 19 walks, 20 earned runs and 28 hits allowed in just 31 innings. At first glance, the initial prize is Todd Frazier, right? This is a big

Leading the majors with 18 blown saves, an overworked bullpen that was actually solid throughout the first portion of the 2017 season simply gave out. It’s played a major part in the team’s recent slump that has seen their standing as a postseason team evaporate. OJ STILL GRIPS THE NATION

OPINION

SID ROSENBERG @sidrosenberg

Believe it or not, the now-70-year-old O.J. Simpson has been in prison for nine years. Thursday, he is up for parole. “The Juice” has been serving a nine-to- 33year sentence for his role in a robbery of his own memorabilia in 2008 and all signs are pointing toward the former Heisman Trophy winner being released as early as October of this year. Amazing how time flies. I can vividly remember that Friday in June of 1994 when the infamous “chase scene” was being broadcasted on every television set in America. All eyes were glued on the image of a white Ford Bronco containing Simpson being pursued by a swarm of police vehicles. It was a moment I will never forget. The Knicks had been

playing at The Garden that night in the NBA Finals against the Houston Rockets and the scene was unlike anything I had ever seen before. As the game was being broadcast on television, you could see the seats begin to empty up toward the concession stands. Eventually, the entire arena (excluding the Knicks and Rockets players, though Patrick Ewing might as well have been watching) had turned its focus on what was unfolding across the L.A. freeways. Then in 1995, we had the murder case in which O.J. would inevitably be found not guilty of the murders of his exwife and her lover. But he wouldn’t walk free for long. Jump to Las Vegas in 2008, when O.J. was arrested and charged with armed robbery for attempting to get back some of his own memorabilia. There was no escaping this time for Simpson, and he was sentenced to nine to 33 years in prison. Which brings us to now, his much-antici-

pated parole hearing. And guess what? The media is still fascinated by O.J. so much so that ESPN and a slew of other television networks will be covering the hearing live. I for one will not be tuning in to watch how the parole hearing unfolds. If the networks really wanted to pull an audience for this event, they would have the Kardashian clan doing live commentary from the nearest salon. Think about this, if Robert Kardashian had

not been involved in the O.J. murder case, would the Kardashians even be relevant today? It still fascinates me how that family gained so much fame over the years. And for doing what? By day’s end, I predict that O.J. will once again be a free man. Juice did spend nine years in prison, which doesn’t make up for the fact that he allegedly killed two people, but it has been nice to know he was suffering behind bars for some time.
