SENATE VOTES TO DEBATE SINATRA’S FOURTH WIFE, ON HEALTHCARE REPEAL BARBARA, DIES AT AGE 90

1

Senate Republicans narrowly agreed to open debate on a bill to repeal Obamacare, but the party’s effort to roll back President Barack Obama’s signature healthcare law still faces significant hurdles. The Senate deadlocked 50-50 on whether to move forward with the healthcare debate, forcing Vice President Mike Pence to cast the tie-breaking vote and send the bill to the Senate floor. The outcome

was a huge relief for President Donald Trump, who had pushed his fellow Republicans hard in recent days to live up to the party’s campaign promises to repeal the 2010 Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare. But the narrow victory on a simple procedural matter raised questions about whether Republicans can muster the votes necessary to pass any of the repeal approaches the Senate will consider.

Barbara Sinatra, the fourth wife of singer Frank Sinatra, died on Tuesday at the age of 90, her representative said. John Thoresen, director of the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center in Rancho Mirage, California, said in a statement that Sinatra died of natural causes, surrounded by her family and friends at her home in the desert city. Born Barbara Blakely, she was a former model and Las Vegas showgirl who mar-

ried the famed singer and actor in 1976. She had been married to him for 22 years when he died of a heart attack in 1998. She had previously been married to Zeppo Marx, the youngest of the Marx Brothers comedy team. It was the longest of Frank Sinatra’s marriages.

Sen. John McCain, who has been battling brain cancer at home in Arizona, made a dramatic return to the Capitol on Tuesday accompanied by his wife Cindy, to cast a vote to open the healthcare debate. He received an ovation from his fellow senators when he entered the chamber.

A U.S. Navy ship fired warning shots when an Iranian vessel in the Gulf came within 150 yards) on Tuesday in the first such incident since President Donald Trump took office in January, a U.S. official told Reuters. The last major incident was earlier in January, though there have been instances when a U.S. vessel fired a flare as well as an event in March when a U.S. Navy ship

was forced to change course after multiple fast-attack vessels from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard came too close. The U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the patrol craft, named Thunderbolt, fired the warning shots after the Iranian vessel approached at high speed and ignored radio calls, flares and the ship’s whistle. The Thunderbolt was accompanied by several U.S. Coast Guard vessels.

The chairman of the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee on Tuesday asked the chief executives of Alphabet Inc., Facebook Inc., Amazon.com Inc., AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and other companies to testify at a Sept. 7 hearing on the future of net neutrality rules. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission is considering tossing out 2015 Obama

administration net neutrality rules that reclassified internet service like a public utility. The rules bar providers from blocking, slowing or offering paid prioritization of websites. Many internet providers want Congress to step in and write permanent rules. Other chief executives asked to testify include the heads of Comcast Corp., Netflix Inc. and Charter Communications Inc.

WHAT’S HAPPENING TODAY GOP BEGIN (AGAIN) DRAFTING OBAMACARE REPLACEMENT The Senate will now launch what Mitch McConnell has promised will be a robust debate on healthcare that could include a variety of amendments. Senators said several approaches have been discussed, including a straight repeal of Obamacare with no replacement plan, or repealing and replacing the law while also overhauling Medicaid, the federal health insurance program for the poor and disabled.

Boston-based app will analyze DNA to help personalize weight loss By sequencing your genes, you can get insights on what your body needs nutritionally, Lose It! says. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

kristin.toussaint@metro.us

What’s the secret to losing weight? It’s probably not in the latest fad diet you heard about, but it may be in your own DNA. Boston-based weightloss tracking app Lose It! wants to help you tap into your genetic code so you can better understand your diet and nutrition needs. Lose It! Announced this week its embodyDNA service, a partnership with Helix, a Silicon Valley genome sequencing startup. Lose It! says that it’s the first DNA-based weight loss plan. With the app, users track their food and exercise, but the company was looking to give people an even more personalized experience on their weight loss journey, said Kevin McCoy, the senior vice president of business development. “What we learned was that people are quite a bit more successful when they get more personal insights. That’s where the DNA idea came in,” he said. “We thought it’d be really interesting if we could give people insights into their body chemistry.” The DNA kit costs $189.99, and you simply send in a sample of your saliva and Helix sequences your genes in about six weeks. The results will appear up right in your Lose It! App, showing you some genetic trails across four categories: weight loss, nutrition, fitness and food sensitivity. “One [trait] is saturated fat, so if you’re

predisposed to the saturated fat trait, it means if you consume more than 22 grams of saturated fat a day, there’s a likelihood of gaining weight,” McCoy said. “Only 5 percent of the population is predisposed to that, so it’s a really interesting thing to learn about, that saturated fat does matter to you.” Other traits will tell you if you’re lactose or gluten intolerant, your sensitivity to sugary drinks and your nutrient macros, like if you’re predisposed to having lower levels of iron. From there, the app will suggest some food options for you — for example, things higher in iron to fill that nutritional need. Your DNA isn’t going to give you an exact roadmap to losing those inches on your waist, though. Robert Green, a geneticist at Harvard and a compensated advisor to Helix, warned that it’s not that clear cut, but being informed about your body can still help you focus on it in a positive way. “As long as companies are selling education about these features in a way that engages people with the notion of their bodies, with diet, with exercise, and they’re using this as a way to enrich the engagement with healthy things they should know and do anyway, then I think it’s fine,” he said. “I think what is not scientifically valid is the notion that there’s any evidence that individuals can achieve specific outcomes based on their DNA.” That education is the key, McCoy said. The app will show you the science behind the results, nutrient details of your food and exercise behaviors and provide expert information in references and studies, he said, “so you can go as deep as you want.”

MassDOT officials are warning commuters to prepare for a “hellish three weeks” as construction on the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge is set to start Friday. Basically, “Stay away,” advised Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack at a press conference on Tuesday. The construction project will replace the eastbound bridge deck, on which motor vehicles and Green Line B branch trains travel. Under the bridge is the Massachusetts Turnpike, the Worcester/Framingham Commuter Rail Line and Amtrak tracks, which will also be impacted by the project. “If you don’t need to be here, don’t come anywhere near the area,” Pollack told reporters.

“Number 2, if you have to go through it, have a plan. … This is really going to be disruptive to everyone who is on Commonwealth Avenue, on the Turnpike, uses the BU Bridge.” T commuters will start seeing the effects beginning Wednesday at 9 p.m., when shuttle buses will replace train service along the Green Line B branch between the Babcock Street and Blandford Street stops. There will be no T tracks over the bridge during the project, Pollack warned, as they will also be replaced. For drivers, street closures begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 27, when the area of Commonwealth Avenue between Packard’s Corner and Kenmore Square will close to traffic through

5 a.m. on Aug. 14. On Friday night, the Mass Pike restrictions will start as alternating sides of I-90 are reduced to one lane of travel after 7 p.m. on weekdays and between 9 p.m. Fridays to 5 a.m. Mondays. The first weekend of the project will restrict inbound traffic to one lane and outbound to two, with the next weekend restricting outbound traffic to one lane and inbound to two. For pedestrians and cyclists, there will be full access over the bridge on the westbound side and temporary signs will help them navigate any detours. The project is expected to be one of the most disruptive projects the Highway Division has undertaken in a long time, said Acting Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver. Workers are using an “accelerated bridge technique” which is more disruptive to traffic in the moment but will shorten the project’s length significantly, officials say. With normal techniques, the construction would take about five years. The first stage of the project is expected to be completed Aug. 14.

Hubway adding extra stations to ease Comm Ave repair stress The bike-sharing system also announced its first app to help commuters find bikes and stations. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

kristin.toussaint@metro.us

The Commonwealth Avenue Bridge Replacement project is sure to cause commuter-related headaches in the next three weeks. In an attempt to alleviate some of that stress, Hubway is launching a new app in advance of the construction congestion. This is the Boston bikesharing program’s first app and its main focus will be to help commuters find stations and available bikes and purchase passes. And, of course, to bypass the vehicular traffic on two wheels. The project will affect bus, train and vehicle routes in an effort to rebuild the bridge in about three weeks. Though a 1½-mile-long area on Commonwealth Avenue between Kenmore Square and Packard’s Corner will be closed to cars and trains, it will still stay open to pedestrians and bicyclists. To take advantage of this, Hubway is partnering with MassDOT to add two temporary Hubway stations along Commonwealth Avenue. The additional stations will be at Babcock Street and Silber Way. Hubway Ambassadors will hang out at those temporary stations from 7 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday in order to help users and provide more bikes on a first-come, first-serve basis. All other Hubway stations along Commonwealth Avenue and throughout Boston will operate as normal during the construction time. Through the app, avail-

able on iPhone and Android, riders can check for available bikes and docking spaces in real time. Plus, it shows personal stats like miles traveled and calories burned. The app is also providing a special deal to riders with a limited-time $1 single ride or $20 off of a new annual membership. The single ride is only available during the construction project, from July 26 to Aug. 14. It covers up to 30 minutes of travel and if you need to keep the Hubway bike out longer, it’s $3 for each additional 30 minutes. An annual membership is $99.Â

“With major work planned for Commonwealth Avenue, our hope is that Hubway’s new mobile app can provide a convenience for Bostonians who need to find new ways around town, Hubway General Manager Katie O’Connor said in a statement. “If you’ve never tried Hubway before, this summer is the perfect opportunity with reduced-cost fares for this simple, enjoyable way to get around town.

LOL, Trump blocked Chrissy Teigen Well, it finally happened: President Donald Trump blocked long-time troll and Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Chrissy Teigen on Twitter. The famously thin-skinned president has made a habit of blocking people who criticize him on the internet, but Teigen has been throwing shade at Trump for nine years without consequence. Until Tuesday. And all it took to get blocked were five little words. In response to a post Trump wrote Sunday saying, “It’s very sad that Republicans, even some that were carried over the line on my back, do very little to protect their President.” Teigen’s response? “Lolllllll no one likes you.” This is far from the first time Teigen has trolled Trump — she told the president to “grow up” June 8 after he (once again) tweeted that The New York Times was “fake news.” “You are 71 f— ing years old,” the “Lip Sync Battle” host wrote. “Grow. The f—. Up.” Apparently that’s all good — but telling the president no one likes him was enough to make 45’s blood boil. ERIN TIERNAN

Lily Collins’ teachable moment

How “The Last Tycoon actress is amplifying the conversation around eating disorders.

blame her. The 28-yearold has been hustling hard lately, promoting both “The Last Tycoon, and “To the Bone. The former is yet another take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s gilded age, in which the “Mirror Mirror actress plays the young, tenacious Celia. The latter is a brutally honest look at eating disorders. Collins plays Ellen, a woman struggling with anorexia, who isn’t so far away from herself. See, the British-born Los Angeles native is no stranger to eating disorders — most recent articles about the actress and, yes, daughter of Phil Collins are obligated to mention that she had her own battle with anorexia as a teenager. But she’s determined to make her experience the most teachable moment. “It’s been an incredibly therapeutic experience and process for me, “ she says. “It’s pretty special. Here Collins talks

RACHAEL VAUGHAN CLEMMONS @rachaelclemz

For the majority of our interview, Lily Collins plays it straight. She sticks to her talking points. She only shifts ever so slightly in the very plush armchair of the Whitby Hotel in Manhattan, glancing here and there at her publicists from underneath her famously glorious brows. But when I tell her I’m done asking questions, she immediately relaxes. “Awesome! Great! Cool time! she says, genuinely. Her shoulders loosen, and finally, briefly, her innate charm shines through. We talk about style, we talk about tattoos, and just like that, our time is up. Of course, you can’t

For me, I’d never done anything in the 1930s. There’s just so much going on within the politics of the time that played into how to portray this

character. I really enjoyed playing someone that’s a go-getter, that wants to do more than what people

think she’s capable of, and [to be able to] do it over the span of so many episodes.

Have you taken her ruthless approach and applied it to your own career, at all? Oh, 100 percent! I’ve always wanted to produce, direct, write, all that. And seeing someone younger than me do it, to see what she goes through to get it done, that’s inspiring to me. She’s the young one, but she’s willing to fight to be taken seriously. She’s in it to win it. Shifting a bit to your other most recent project. You’ve opened up about your past battle with anorexia in tandem with “To the Bone.

How are you ďŹ nding balance these days? It’s definitely helped me, verbalizing things that I probably never would have before. I did this movie so that other people would feel less alone. And I’ve been given that gift back every day. Marti [Noxon, the film’s director] and I aren’t starting this conversation, we’re amplifying it. So I’m really proud of it.

How do you think people can balance body positivity but still be inclusive? Strong comes in many different forms. I used to view healthy as what perfection looked like, not what healthy felt like. And for me, food as fuel, not punishment was a really strong mentality to switch over to. When you fuel your body, you are the most powerful version of yourself. So you can’t judge based on what you see — it’s all about how you feel.

In “Atomic Blonde,” Charlize Theron smashes a guy in the face with a hot plate. She pummels a baddie silly with the heel of her shoe. It’s Charlize as we’ve never seen her: as a full-on, knock-down, drag-out action goddess. And given the chance, she puts all of her “Fate of the Furious” cast members to shame — well, maybe not Jason Statham. Thing is, this isn’t that surprising. Theron’s done action before — or appeared in action movies, we should say. Even, as vengeful savior Furiosa in “Mad Max: Fury Road,” she didn’t get much of a chance to cause hurt; she was mostly behind the wheel, driving, a monster of a truck across the Australian Outback. But when she got the chance to do more — say, go mano-e-mano with Tom Hardy’s Mad Max 2.0 — she brought the pain. Hell, Furiosa tore off the main villain’s mouth. Action movies have

largely confined Theron to the sides. Even as the villain of “The Fate of the Furious,” she spends most of her time in front of computers, away from the gravity- and sciencedefying mayhem. Adding worse to worse, Theron’s also a dancer. She can move — and “Atomic Blonde” is proof of it. But there’s a deeper reason “Atomic Blonde” Charlize isn’t a shock: Theron is a shape-shifter. Poring over her filmography, it’s clear she’s changed directions as quickly as Lorraine, her MI6 bruiser in “Atomic Blonde,” can take out a roomful of minions. First she was yet another model-turned-actress. Then she revealed she could be funny. Then she turned into a serious, Oscar-winning thespian. Then she morphed into a hero in dumb wouldbeblockbusters. Then, at the Hollywood-old age of 37, it turned out she could be a to-die-for villain as well. And now, lo and behold, she’s a fast and furious action star, too. In other words, Charlize contains multitudes. She’s a renaissance woman, always adding new talents to her résumé. If we can play armchair psychologist, we’d like to

think what drives her is the need to defy low expectations. Yes, she started out as a model who wanted to act. Theron must have known that she’d be seen as a cliché, a statistic, bound for failure. We’d like to think, when she arrived in Hollywood, she stared at the sign affixed to Mount Lee and thought, “I’ll show them.” And she did. Then she got older — by Hollywood standards. By the time she wound up as the aging, bitter villain in “Snow White and the Huntsman,” terrorizing the new class of Hollywood female royalty (Kristen Stewart), she wasn’t even yet 40. You can see the rage at a system that was already putting her out to pasture. But you can also sense pride. She steals “Snow White and the Hunstman” (and its dopey sequel), vamping regally, purring threats and insults, wielding her anger like one of the proton packs from “Ghostbusters” and firing it anyone who would doubt her. The role tells us what “Atomic Blonde” says in spades: Never underestimate Charlize. Otherwise, you’ll get a champagne bottle broken in your eye.

Boston’s South End is riddled with contradictions, but prospective homeowners and renters can’t seem to get enough. The area features everything from pricy brownstones to lowincome housing, with a proximity to Boston that also offers a quiet, neighborhood feel. There are even stately Victorian homes that serve as backdrops for a vibrant arts scene. “People who know the South End don’t want to live anywhere else,” says Peter Roth, developer of the recently opened Girard apartment complex. Andrew McKinney, a real estate agent for Buyers Brokers Only LLC, says while people have always been drawn to LOCAL HANGS

the South End, in recent years, prices have noticeably risen, making it more difficult for young professionals to move in. “It definitely appeals to people who are downsizing, professionals,” he says. “It’s a little harder for younger, first-time buyers to break in.” Jen, a mom who lives in the brownstone-lined Worcester Square, says she’s noticed a change in the neighborhood since she moved there in 2009. “It’s a lot more upscale development, and [there are] fewer college kids,” she says of the neighborhood, which is surrounded by Northeastern University and the New England Conservatory. Although prices continue to rise, McKinney says the South End has maintained much of its diversity. The neighborhood has historically been home to large immigrant, African-American and LGBT populations. “The neighborhood

is a great mix of all sorts of people in all stages of life,” says McKinney. “That’s probably one of the great draws.” Residents say that the eclectic mix of delicious restaurants is another big selling point for the neighborhood. Boston hot spots like Coppa and Myers & Chang are located in the heart of the South End. “[The best part of living here is] probably the access to great restaurants,” says South End resident Jen. “The amazing thing is there’s always a new place to try. There’s always something new opening and they’re always high-quality and fun.” Those trying to make roots in one of Boston’s hippest haunts may be in luck, as new apartment complexes like the Inkblot and Girard recently opened their doors. McKinney says the location of these buildings, between Harrison Avenue and Albany Street, is the

Patriots position preview: Wide receiver Tom Brady will have more weapons in 2017 than he’s ever had before. JAMES TOSCANO @Jimmy_Toscano sports@metro.us

We’re almost through the calm in the sports world before the storm, but for Patriots fans what a beautiful and glorious storm it should be. Football is around the corner and that means the New England Patriots are set to defend their title once again, fresh off their 34-28 Super Bowl LI win over the Atlanta Falcons. And believe it or not, the Patriots are considered to be a better team going into this season than they were last season. That’s why you’re already hearing 19-0 talk around these parts (though not from within Gillette Stadium walls). Training camp begins this week and that’s when everyone will get their first real look at what the team is working with. We’ll break it all down position by position, starting first with a locked and loaded receiver corps for Tom Brady.

Brandin Cooks is entering his first season as a member of the Patriots. GETTY IMAGES

The favorites Brandin Cooks, Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Malcolm Mitchell, Danny Amendola, Matt Slater One of the big offseason acquisitions for the Patriots was former Saints wide receiver Brandin Cooks. Cooks is a dynamic player who

can break out for that big gain at any moment. Last year, he averaged 15.0 yards per catch, good for 14th in the NFL — but he had the third-most receptions (78) of those players ahead of him. His 15 receptions of 20-plus yards tied him for 16th in the NFL, while his 73.3 yards per game ranked him 9th. Cooks also had

the longest reception of last season, a 98-yard touchdown. Picture Cooks as a hybrid version of two other Patriots receivers, Julian Edelman and Chris Hogan. Edelman returns for his ninth season with the Patriots, having become an integral part of their success throughout the years. Just go back to

Super Bowl LI for the latest example, with Edelman making a miraculous, all-time great catch off Falcons cornerback Robert Alford’s cleat late in the game. His 2016 season also saw him reach career highs with 1,106 reception yards and 55 receptions for first downs. Could Edelman’s receptions dip with

Cooks on board? Maybe, but he’s still Brady’s most trusted receiver. The Malcolm Mitchell hype train has left the station after his Super Bowl LI performance — six catches for 70 yards. Mitchell showed flashes throughout his rookie season that gave fans a reason to be excited. The Patriots have whiffed on many wide receivers in the NFL Draft, but it feels as though they hit with Mitchell, who will have an increased role from the start. Believe it or not, Hogan was one of the best deep ball receivers in the NFL last year. His 17.8 yards per catch ranked him tied for first with Washington’s DeSean Jackson. Despite just 38 receptions and 57 targets last season, Hogan is a physical mismatch, combining size and speed. After another contract restructure, Danny Amendola returns to the Patriots. Amendola, though not always featured in the offense, has come up in many big situations when called upon.

USMNT set for Gold Cup final against Jamaica

Clint Dempsey of the USMNT celebrates a goal.

GETTY IMAGES

It might not have the same juice that Mexico vs. USMNT would have naturally possessed but still, the American men are playing for their sixth Gold Cup title on Wednesday night (9:30, FS1) as they host Jamaica at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. It remains a very meaningful match regardless of the CONCACAF opponent. Despite some sketchy moments early on in the tourney, the United States was expected to be here and they performed well in the semifinals on Saturday night as they dispatched Costa Rica, 2-0, at AT&T Stadium in Dallas thanks to a pair of second half goals from long-time standouts Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey (his 57th tally for the USMNT, tying Landon Donovan’s record). For a tournament

that has been devoid of many great games or moments, the Jamaicans undoubtedly provided the biggest upset of these past three weeks as they shocked Mexico, 1-0, on Sunday night at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. New York Red Bulls defender Kemar Lawrence’s brilliant free kick in the 88th minute proved to be the game-winner in one of his country’s best-ever sporting results: it was the first time that they had ever beaten Mexico at a Gold Cup. Head coach Bruce Arena’s team is bidding for its first Gold Cup championship since 2013 (a 1-0 win over Panama), and while they have gone 14-2-8 all-time vs. Jamaica (including 11-1-3 on American soil and 3-1-0 in the Gold Cup), that lone

Gold Cup defeat remains painful since it happened in the 2015 semifinals (a 2-1 Jamaica victory). Jamaica has only been to the World Cup once — in 1998 — so while it is not a powerhouse by any means, it is more than capable of pulling off another surprising result. For MLS fans, there should be some familiar names on Jamaica as eight players on their current roster compete professionally stateside. Former UConn star Andre Blake has been the best goalkeeper in the Gold Cup with three clean sheets to his credit. Other MLS players include defenders Oniel Fisher (Seattle), Shaun Francis (Montreal), Alvas Powell (Portland) and Jermaine Taylor (Minnesota) along with midfielder Je-Vaughn

Watson (New England) and forward Darren Mattocks (Portland). As an American, it’s tough to muster much negativity toward Jamaica since it’s such a popular vacation/ honeymoon spot, plus The Reggae Boyz might be the best nickname of any country’s national soccer team in the world. Mexico dominated possession vs. Jamaica (69-31 percent) but they each ended up with the same amount of shots on goal (5). The U.S. will have to be purposeful in its attacking runs since Jamaica will most likely take a similar approach of waiting back and then trying to capitalize on its few golden chances (free kicks, corner kicks, etc.). The USMNT seems to be peaking at the right time RICH SLATE
